Cozy cafe with a great menu.
Stopped here during our trip in Melville. It’s truly a beautiful restaurant with amazing decor. Their cheesecake was too die for but the red velvet was just a bit too sweet. The freshly squeezed juice was perfection. It was the perfect stop on our trip.
We decided to visit De La Creme after many years, and since last we were here a lot has changed... new owners, changed decor and I have to say, all as great as I remember. Breakfast was fantastic and lived up to my memories, although I do miss the toasted Chelsea bun that used to come with breakfast.
Thanks Moira and your team, this one is well worth it!!!
Trendy but not pretentious cafe serving a range of different foods with options for pretty much everyone--meat lovers, fish lovers, vegetarians. Everything here is done well. The milk shakes are particularly exquisitely good. I had a salmon salad--the combination of cream cheese, smoked salmon, walnuts, and lettuces is particularly tasty making it more than just a salad. The management is always on hand, and they and the servers are friendly and welcoming, and look after you well. I'd rate this place higher if they had more comfortable chairs.
Its also in easy walking distance of the quirky and fun 27 Containers shopping and crafts center.
Wow so glad they opened this place, I had breakfast with my friend this morning my goodness me I had the nicest breakfast that money could buy. The staff is super friendly and the owner too. I Will definitely will be going back again.
Always find something to enjoy here. Simple and enjoyable. Not perfect by any means, but what they do they do well. My only complaint is timed menus, breakfast until 12 other meals after 12, a bit archaic. Otherwise it's great.
As you walk in you get the most amazing sell coming from this cafe. Some of my favorites are the spanakopita( spinach and feta) , cheese cake , chocolate eclairs , toasted cheese with chilli , rye bread and many more. They have the most friendly staff and it’s a pleasure going there.
Popped in for a quick lunch on a Monday afternoon when a lot of other places were closed. I had the chicken salad and my husband had the calamari salad. Both salads were good. Our waitress was lovely and service was great.
The vibe is awesome - very relaxing since the massive windows allow so much sunlight in. It's truly beautiful to sit and have coffee with friends! It was a little hard to try get the waiters attention but other than that really great service.
Last weekend a friend and I went for brunch. I was pleasantly surprise with this understated, old fashioned cafe/bakery. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful when we asked what he recommended. My friend and I both got cappuccinos and filled croissants. Mine filled with scrambled egg and onion, his with scrambled egg and salmon. They were both delicious, prepared quickly and served with a smile.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Cafe De La Creme and will definitely be back!
Their desserts and cakes are just delicious. Lovely for a take away to enjoy in the warmth of your home with a cup of tea. Their cinnamon bun is buttery and moreish. Cheese cake is lovely. So much to choose from!
A colleague brought some for the morning staff meeting and I was hooked on these buttery and fresh pillowy Chelsea buns. You could tell they had been made with a fresh yeast dough and I liked that they weren't overly sweet. Excited to try more of their baked goods.
This café is straight out of a movie. Interior, service and confectionery selection is divine. Only down side is their pricey light meals but my go to place for a cuppa and cake for sure.
So this cafe has been here forever and as we hadn't been for ages thought it would be fab spot to take my in-laws (visiting from Scotland) for afternoon tea.
We were not disappointed and were pleased to see not much had changed - certainly not their yummy cakes.
We had coffee with various cakes including my husbands favourite chocolate ganache which he said was as lovely as he remembered, toasted Chelsea bun and scones with cream and ham .. lovely and fresh and fabulous although I am always a little sad when the jam comes in those little tubs - never quite as good as homemade or just in a little jar.
Service was excellent - such a lovely waiter who was friendly and patient with my elderly in-laws.. made our tea into a special treat!
Revisited this Jozi landmark coffee shop and restaurant. After many years there is not much change. Everything still as great as ever. The coffee, the vibe, the fresh goodies, the friendly service.
What a stunning place! I fell inlove with the setting as soon as i walked through the door.
The service was friendly and super attentive, we didn't wait long for our food which is always a plus point. Their baklava was delicious and i can say the same for the apple strudle, the brownie was a bit of a let down to be honest as it lacked flavour. But i sill definately be back to try the rest of their delicious looking baked goods.
A reader or writers paradise for rainy days spent pouring over a book or article with a steaming cup of coffee and delectable treats or a hearty home style meal. Perfect for endless dates with friends discussing the worlds problems. A lovely small restaurant in the heart of Melville popular for their bakery which produces the most delicious fresh pastries and bread daily. A must try if in the area and slightly peckish!

What a lovely spot! Just had a red flat white and it was good! Staff was friendly and did not hover like bees while I had a radio interview for @networkcoachza for Radio Sonder Grense! I want to go back for food as it looked amazing! Thanks for being a great venue.
Really great cakes and bakery goods are served here .Their chocolate trifle which is liks mousse is quite moist and yummy. Staff are friendly too
I come here for the good stuff. Their baked goods.
I've only had lunch here once and it was quite average. The service is great but I'd rather just pop by, pick up what I want and go. The baked goods are delicious, especially their lemon meringue. Throughout the baked goods section there are some hits and misses, some depending on personal preference but no one has ever been disappointed by their lemon meringue.
It's a cute little cafe that's great for stopping by before you go about your day out in Melville.

I am unsure whether the standard of breakfast was so high because of the actual food or the circumstances upon which it was required. An English breakfast - a post wedding necessity - that one would be hard pressed to find better elsewhere.
The environment was quiet, despite there being a full house of patrons - once again catering to my post wedding state.
The service was efficient, and the Waitrons knew what a "flat white" was, laying to rest the misconception that it is "a Cape Town thing".
All in all, it was a heavenly experience, despite the hell the morning promised.
Also, I received two slices of toast unexpectedly, promptly resolving the anguish experienced at Nino's the previous day (read previous review for context).

If you're a person who enjoys classical pastries done incredibly well, this is a good place to look. Although it's a corner cafe in a really busy part of Joburg socially but it's a relatively well kept secret. Not quite the place if you're looking for a 7th avenue vibe but you won't regret taking a break from the hype. Lastly don't limit yourself to just the pastries. Not too many kitchens are this consistent and just this good. Wow. Wow. WOW.
Came across this place when fishing restaurant across the street that was closed. What a pleasant surprise. Very friendly staff and very interesting foods and drink choices. We are vegetarians and order Thai curry, chick pea party and hummus and toast. Also ordered tomato soup. Everything very delicious. Great drink options also.
Cafe de la Creme has been around for a very long time! They're famous for their delicious baked goods - like cakes, pies, tarts, croissants, confections etc!
Apart from these delectable things, you'll also find a very reasonably priced menu, filled with cafe style meals to please virtually every palate.
The staff are friendly and very efficient. The interior is a tiny bit dated, but lends to the charm and heritage of this iconic corner bakery.
An old favorite with lots of yummy treats to please any palette! We stopped here for a breakfast which was nice, as most "normal breakfasts" should be. Bacon, eggs, toast etc, not much can be wrong with that right! The coffee could be better though, with so many great coffee roasters in the vicinity, I think they should find a local bean... The pastries and baked goods look and taste delicious!
Why don't you serve breakfast after 12? It's 2016 and I really want to indulge in your great looking breakfast menu after 12. Also why does it take the second coming of our lord and savior to get food after ordering it? Anyway, with all that aside this place is amazing! The decor, the layout of the space, the food menu, the drinks menu and the patisserie. The aromas are lovely and the atmosphere is grand.
We happened to find parking just outside Cafe De La Creme yet our intention was to go to another restaurant for breakfast. But from the road, we could sense that this was where we wanted to go. It was inviting and quite busy, always a good sign! We enjoyed a lovely breakfast of Salmon and Scrambled Eggs and the 3 Egg Omelette with salami, tomato and mozzarella. The coffee was delicious and the service was just right, they were attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back!
What a cute little place - felt like I could have been in Europe. The carrot cake is absolutely out of this world. Tried the spanakopita as well - divine!! Had better coffee but overall was lovely. Great service too!
Cafe De La Creme enjoys a long history in Melville. After the change in ownership, it started to resemble it's old self.
De La Creme has an incredible selection of pasties. Everything from freshly baked breads, to carrot cake to cheese cake and custard slices. Everything is equality great eaten in or enjoyed elsewhere.
The magic of this place lies between its great treats and it's perfect location. Situated on the corner of 7th and 4th, and coupled with its great wooden windows, it allows you to watch a busy world pass by in piece.
My suggestion would be to order as much as possible and share everything. I'm also not sure there are many places in Melville that will serve a better dessert, which makes this an easy stop after a relaxed weekend lunch.
Cafe de la creme is a homey little coffee shop in the heart of Melville. It has been there ever since I can remember and I have always loved going there. I can spend hours just sipping tea and watching people through their large windows. Their breakfasts and really good and the fresh cakes are a must have.
I was really impressed with this cafe. They have some of the best baked good I have seen in a really long time. So fresh and so yummy. Definitely worth a look.
Breakfast yummy so living in the hippie vibey town of Melville and always passing 7th Street I always looked at the cafe de la creme and wondered when will I ever get to have a meal there.... Today was my lucky day we stopped there to catch breakfast and it was really delicious to drink I had a cappuccino it was really good and my boyfriend had carrot and ginger juice made freshly for breakfast their menu had a great selection of divine breakfast options but today we both had an omelet with 3 toppings of our choice so we both had the same thing cheese, salami and mushrooms with toast it was delicious, great set up we had a seat facing 4th Street and the decor of the place makes you feel like you are in a different world great service to add to our bill we took a crossiant with us freshly baked.
Good coffee in a relaxed atmosphere, one of the areas institutions. The staff are friendly and attentive. With a varied menu and a range of goodies to take home everyone will be satisfied.
You cannot. I repeat, you cannot beat the atmosphere in this place for a lunch/ breakfast. The pressed ceilings and wall length Windows accompanied by the aroma of freshly baked goodness, makes this place magical.
The food is Okay, plain and simple. The coffee, defiantly lacking. The baked goods, amazing.
The service is usually attentive and friendly all around, as well as timely.
The pressed juices are delightful and worth the trip. If you are looking for a place to meet a friend for breakfast or lunch, why not soak up the ambience of Cafe De La Creme.
Recommend as an institution of Melville, we went for a wonderful breakfast. The pressed juice and eggs Benedict were great. The daily menus looked delicious and would love to go back. Awesome service and staff!
A friend owed me some breakfast and he chose here. The service was great and it was really well set. I was hoping to try their zucchini and feta crumpets but sadly they wouldn't make it for me as it wasn't lunch time. Their eggs Benedict was delicious and I had their brownie which was to die for, it was huge fresh out the oven and Devine! My friend had the cheese cake which also looked like heaven! Cannot wait to go back!
Lovely breakfast restaurant in Melville - been there for years. Good bakery also to buy some rolls/ chic chip biscuits as a takeway. Good coffee --average muffin ( seemed a bit stale) but chocolate brownies and eggs Benedict looked great. Not a great waitress on hand but nobody seemed to be rushing. Menu tried and tested I guess.
A nice little bakery/cafe in forever trendy suburb of Mellville.. I forgot how fantastic this area is. There's a really interesting new concept shopping centre made entirely of containers.
This cafe' has a really inviting look and feel - freshly baked breads and pastries & coffee aromas. I ordered my favourite Eggs Benedict and my son had a super-rich looking browny which was tasty. Service was lethargic & the team of waiters & waitresses seemed rather disinterested.
So I am regularly in Melville but I had never seen this place before. So this past Tuesday a couple of hospital group members of mine and I decided to go there for some cake to celebrate our last hospital day. When I walked in I assumed it would be very expensive. It wasnt at all expensive though, every cake was worth every cent. I had a brownie with Vanilla ice cream and I dont really have a sweet tooth but I was beyond impressed. Its a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I am sure to return to this little haven.
Stepping into Cafe de la Creme is like stepping into a coffee shop of old. When I say old, I by no means intend to say it is outdated, but rather it has a classic ambience. The high pressed ceilings and large windows looking out onto the street set the scene for a lovely little spot for morning coffee.
I was fortunate enough to come here for exactly that with a few friends. I was very impressed by the selection of pastries and foods available in store. I decided to try the pecan nut pie with cream and a cappuccino. Both were very tasty, although my pecan nut pie was slightly on the dry side, but did not detract from the taste. Other members of our party had chocolate cake, carrot cake, chocolate croissant and chocolate brownies. They were all presented beautifully and tasted scrumptious as well.
The service was very pleasant and the waitress attended to us timeously.
Overall, a quaint and memorable place to share a morning coffee. Having gazed at a few of the other patrons plates, I will definitely return to try a full meal at this establishment.
I was impressed by the service and cake selection of this quaint little coffee shop. Coffee was good as well. It has been around for a long time and after visiting, I understand why.
Great service, coffee and food. Always friendly faces who are very helpful. It can get quite busy on weekends but that can only be a good thing. Also a lovely bakery with yummy cakes and bread.
Just stopped by for a cup of coffee in our way out. Such a lovely warm place and the smell of freshly baked goods greet you when you step in. You don't know where to look with all the lovely baked cakes and fresh hot croissants staring at you. Attentive waiter. My cuppacino was lovely and the americano too. I'm drooling over their menu and will definitely be back.
What a delightful find. This restaurant is incredibly quaint, with an ambience that is completely enjoyable. The service was good and our waitress was very attentive.
We decided to try their soup, which were delicious. I had the caldo verde ( A portuguese soup) served with toasted bread that soaked up the soup beautifully. I was really full about half way through but couldn't stop eating because it was so good. I am Portuguese and this soup really impressed me.
My friend ordered the carrot cake, which we all tried. I wasn't too impressed. It was a bit too stodgy.
But other than that, I will definitely be back to try out more with the family.
Great ambiance with beautiful bay windows overlooking the street. Waitress was friendly and manager came to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Calamari salad was delicious. Friend had the Prego roll and throughly enjoyed it. Pity it closes so early but will definitely be back. Definitely come here if you have a sweet tooth!
Oh. Wow. I fed the office their choc ganache, lemon meringue, red velvet and carrot cake. I'm a hero now - definitely worth the money! Nom nom nom
Such a nice place to sit and have breakfast in the busy street. Eggs florentine done to perfection and if you want to stay skinny you must definitely not brows the baked goods 😂 the staff are attentive and friendly and engage with customers regarding their experience and the food. Their spanakopita made with filo pastry are delicious!
I love a place that serves a rich, delectable hunk of chocolate cake for breakfast is a winner. It isn't just the homemade biccies at the counter, or the luscious silky milk foam on a cappuccino but the glorious find you have in this little bakery/restaurant.
The manageress is unbelievable. It felt like I was back in Japan. Beware De la Creme, when she leaves, you will lose 30% of your clientele. Your food is great, but her leadership is irreplaceable. Also, give an extra piece if toast with your breakfasts. Bloody Mary's are bloody fantastic.
I am a sucker for chocolate pastries and tried a chocolate pigs ear* (I think that's what it was called)
If you've get a sugary tooth and like chocolate then this is he perfect treat for you. The pastry was harder than I expected but breaks off quite easily.
There are visible sugar granules on the coating which mix quite nicely together with the dark chocolate.
The service was alright but I feel as though we could have been attended to a little better.
Just around the corner from my house this little gem never disappoints. Great fresh pasties to start your day, nice green tea lemon and honey to get the germs away and super warm cosy atmosphere.
I am now all set to start my day!

I love this café because it caters for both the health freaks and the meat lovers. Fresh kale and ginger shakes to name the least, the red velvet slice that melts in your mouth and of course the love you experience and get with every plate- I'm definitely going back. I also always have a good laugh at the sign just above the door, check it out. Great place to relax or do some work
Starting with the positive, it is a cozy place to either have meetings or sit quietly and get things done while enjoying a coffee or a meal. The staff are friendly but the food really always comes out as basic. There is not much to the menu, which may be an over judgement because I have meetings around meals a lot and sometimes I expect the excitement on the plate because it's not always in the conversation
So nice and calm. I totally love ❤ it.
Good cakes... The lemon cheese cake is to die ? for.................................................
Retro themed restaurant with a deli feel. A relaxing environment where you'll feel as if you've been transported 40 years back, which makes for a good treat. Fantastic selection of baked goods and their vegetarian burger is simply amazing and they make their own slop chips to top it off. The service is pretty good and I'll be returning soon for some of those decadent baked goods.
Second, third and fourth time here.
After living in the area for a short time while moving house, this became one of favorite places for various reasons.
And Irish coffee and chocolate truffle cake.
Take away cheese cakes
Almond and chocolate croissants, take away cappuccinos and a steak and kidney pie to ease the hangover.
This place will never disappoint you. Guaranteed !!!
FIRST REVIEW
I have only been here once. and I like it.
You know when you wake up on a rainy Saturday morning .... well Pop in to de la creme.
I came here for breakfast with my love, we shared an almond croissant (do NOT leave here without trying it or taking it home), a fruit salad/meusli/yoghurt/honey (freshly cut fruit and a good amount of honey) and eggs benedict, which is a must. I love hollandaise sauce so it was something I needed my man to try.
The restaurant is kind of busy, and the tables are collectively placed on one side of the restaurant, giving it a very typical french vibe. I parked my booty on a table by the window so I was feeling very francais on that particular morning.
All around the restaurant you will find black board specials, which made my mouth water. I still need to try late afternoon meal here. I think it will be nice.
The owners and waiters are friendly, and so kind. I felt like giving everyone a hug! Kind people just make me feel that way. This must be their secret to their lasting stance on melville 7th! Very tough place for restaurants to be.
They also have the other side of the restaurant where you can pick and choose lovely petit fours to take home....
DEFINITELY TRY
Café de la Crème is one of those little coffee shops that has stood the test of time in Melville, and for me it is their confectionery that is the big drawing card!
Once inside, you will notice big bay windows, clean white table cloths and a cosy, charming ambience.
Their chocolate croissants (pan au chocolats) are excellent and this is a wonderful spot to watch the bustling world go by on a rainy or cold day!
One of my favourite spots in Melville. Outstanding presentation, friendly service and cakes/pastries to die for. Highly recommended the milkshakes and chocolate brownies.
I haven't thought to write a review on De La Creme, because it is such a big part of my life. The weekend only starts when we walk around the corner to this warm, old school local bakery. The service is quick and friendly, and I have always found the staff to go out of their way to help, whether it's getting a table during a busy time or adding a couple of slices of cake to your lunch bill at the last minute. The croissants come highly recommended, as does the coffee, cheesecake and the spanokopita. Give this place a try when you're in the neighbourhood!
One of the top three restaurants in Melville.
I've going to De La Creme for just over 2 years, and the level & quality of food hasn't changed. Quick, quiet, and personable service with a smile.
Fish and salad (no chips for me) was good quality, decently priced, and filling.
Grilled fish was fresh, light, and well-executed. Salad was not the Joburg usual (all lettuce with a cameo appearance of other vegetables), but rather colourful, tasty, and fresh.
This is a great place.
This cute little pastry shop in Melville offers in my opinion the best almond croissants in town. At only R10 a pop they are filled to the brim with frangipan and covered in toasted almonds. This is why i couldn't give up carbs ;)
One of my favorite lunch spots in Melville. The freshly squeezed juices are always amazing, and the food is good as well. Their desserts are great. Avoid the soups – it says with chorizo, but they really put viennas instead. Not the best surprise.
This is one of those places where you can go for a good meal and coffee, friendly faces and flowing conversations filling the air along with the aromas of all the baked goods.
I love coming here on a Sunday for breakfast and coffee, and arguing with myself about whether or not to eat the cake/cookies/brownies as well :)
I definitely recommend this lovely corner cafe, a true gem
love their desserts and always a good place to pop in for a treat.
you will not be disappointed..
I love De La Creme. They bake amazing breads, and the homemade pies are great! Although I loved the old look, with dark wood and chandeliers, I have to admit that the cleaner, more modern makeover is an improvement.
Every time I go here for a meal, I wonder why I don't come more often.
Here's the thing: the food is great, the coffee is fabulous, and they have a few real treats. However, I know about patisserie, and am sometimes disappointed by their reinventions. I would pass on the millionaire shortbread (fudge instead of caramel), baklava (sugar syrup instead of honey), and chocolate chip cookies (too much shortening, not enough chocolate). Instead, have a croissant, try their food, or buy some bread.
Still a Melville stalwart, De La Creme is underrated, and under-patronised.
The cakes and pastries are amazing. One of the best cake shops around Johannesburg. The last time I went there though the place was packed and not so comfortable as I felt like we were rushed to leave. The Ganche Chocolate Cake was moist and very rich, I could not finish it, which is strange as I normally munch every single bit of cake.
Do not try the Ginger Beer, it is home brewed but when you open it, it messes all over the table, and it tastes bitter and you can still taste the yeast. When telling the owner this, she just kind of laughed it off and walked away and we still ended up paying for it.
