Review Fat Harry's - Kenilworth

Leighton Carter
Very surprising venue in Claremont area. I was surprised at the vibey atmosphere when I walked in. Feels much more upmarket than anticipated from the outside. Lovely wood fire ovens to help in the winter months. The food quality was outstanding. I had the risotto with fillet which was fantastic. The service was adequate although the wait for the food and drinks was a bit long.

Spent a couple of months in Cape Town and loved working from here or meeting friends for food and quiz night. Food is delish: can recommend the Thai Mussels. Stunning views of the mountain from the beer garden on top of the pub. Shout out to Patrick and Bekele(hope I spelled his name right) for awesome service every time I was there. Will be back for sure in the New Year.

as of the drinks and service, superb! Jalapeno Poppers were divine, and I'm most definitely keen to try their other food offers. great service and friendly managers and staff with a warm and cozy atmosphere. highly recommended for socials and gatherings.

It's unfortunate that my all-time favorite restaurant is so far from where we reside🤪, but we still visit it due to the excellent cuisine and service🙌 The cuisine was excellent, especially the seafood pasta and the main course of mussels. The personnel was extremely polite. Due to load shedding, the doorman checked to see if we had walked to our cars securely. Again, 10/10 overall.

Went there the morning of 13 November 2022 for brunch. We were welcomed by very friendly staff. They were extremely flexible with my choice to check out the place to decide where we want to be seated. We opted to sit outside as it was hot (weather wise). The outside is upstairs with an undercover roof. There was a nice breeze and the view was great. We didn't wait long for our drinks or food. The waitress provided us with some excellent suggestions to try. The scenery was fantastic. I'd definitely recommend this establishment. To me they are not too pricey. I ordered the rib eyed steak with veggies and potatoes. They placed the rib eyes on top of the veggies and potatoes, which makes it look like a small portion. It definitely isnt. I was full after my meal. The butter sauce was amazing as well.

It was my first time there and I will definitely go back! The atmosphere was lovely and the food was delicious 😋

Pretty much the best breakfast I’ve had in a restaurant this year. Warm vibes, remote working friendly, fires 🔥 going early in the morning, and easy on the eye… Highly recommended.

The roof top seating area is awesome for sundowners, a pizza and the views of Devils Peak are wow. They offer a variety of food and drinks. Definitely worth a try if you have not been yet. There is seating downstairs as well. Comfy and nicely laid out restaurant. Friendly staff and good prices.

Such a great place for delicious gin cocktails amongst others. Loved their poppers and beautiful views of the mountain. Pizzas looked incredible too. Friendly staff and definitely will be back. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their coffee is amazing because its deluxe. I had the gin with the berry ice cube and the Hendricks with a basil and cucumber ice ball. Can't remember the names. They make a mean frozen margarita too

Nice restaurant Good food also good atmosphere as well

The upper deck offers a breathtaking sunset mountain view, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a warm and cozy atmosphere. The staff is friendly and polite, and I must say, the food was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend this place to both family and friends.

Oblivion is such a gem in Harfield Village! I work remotely and they are super accommodating with me and my laptop - so much so, that I am here working most days! They have a wonderful, well-priced menu (never had a disappointing meal, and I've tried most of them!), awesome decor, strong wifi, great music, and wonderful staff - in particular, Patrick knows my order and is also ready with a smile and great service! What a bonus to have quiz nights on Monday nights - be prepared for a head scratcher! Such a winner - thanks for being awesome, guys!

The Oblivion bar and restaurant, along with nearby Banana Jam, is a local institution that has been around for over 20 years now. It is an important and popular meeting place for locals from across the Southern Suburbs. The restaurant has changed quite a lot since its early days when it catered for a younger crowed that wanted to party and now feels as though it has taken on a more family friendly focus with a cozy vibe that is more food focused. I enjoyed going to it back in its early years when I was a university student and I also enjoy going to it now in its more family friendly cozy form. They still do nice cocktails.

I recently celebrated my 30th birthday at Oblivion on the deck, and I can confidently say that the experience was nothing short of amazing! I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the exceptional service and hospitality provided by Tracey and her team. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by a professional and welcoming team. Throughout the evening, the managers were incredibly helpful and attentive, ensuring that everything was running smoothly. I also want to give a special shoutout to our waiter who went above and beyond to make sure my guests and I had a great time. The atmosphere, food, and drinks were all fantastic, and my friends and family are still talking about how much they enjoyed the celebration. I am truly grateful to Oblivion for making my special day one that I will never forget. I highly recommend Oblivion for anyone looking to host a memorable event. The dedication to providing excellent service truly shines through, and I will definitely be returning for more dinners and events in the future. Thank you once again to Tracey and the entire Oblivion team for everything!

I just LOVE their food! We order for deliver ofter and evrry single meal I have tasted has been amazing. Their Moroccan Beef, Risotto, Burgers, the BEST chips, have all lef me to this review as I must commend the flavour, freshness, ad consistent quality of their food! It's one of my most fave places to order from and would love to dine there soon.

Delightful gem in Claremont with an upstairs deck and unexpected view of the tops of Table Mountain & Devil's Peak. The Cosmopolitan I had was a bit disappointing in terms of taste and the glass was only ¾ but that could be result of waitress having to navigate stairs to bring the drink. Maybe the restaurant needs to think about having a bar at deck level or pouring the mixed drink at the table. The salad I had with added bacon was absolutely delicious. It was interesting to have balsamic vinegar and olive oil served in tiny bowls rather than bottles being brought to the table. My preference would be for the bottles as one only uses what is needed (rather than having leftovers in a container) Overall, a pleasant experience.

It's one of my favourite coffee ☕️ shops when in the area 🇿🇦❤️

Last visit there was a drunk women (claimed to be the owners friend) who used fowl language, went up to tables which had children at and told them to leave so she could sing a song with more fowl language. The waiters all just twiddled their thumbs because she was "the friend of the owner". The manager was no where to be seen during this and when he finally arrived he tried to pass it all off as a joke.
Some advice to the owner, drop this person as a friend otherwise she will destroy your business!
Damian
Good location. Plenty of parking outside and nearby. Staff is friendly but, due to the capacity, you might find yourself having o flag down watrons in order to get some service. The food is decent and they have a fair selection of beers and wines.

What a hidden gem!

Walked in and the first thing we noticed was the fireplace, perfect for a chilly sunday. Setup up is really cool if your into the whole rustic vibe.
Reason for going here was the baby chicken on the menu as per the menu on zomato, was disappointed when we got there and their menu has changed, nevertheless the food was appetizing, we had the Ribs Wings and Meatballs combo, Ribs were a bit spiceless but we threw salt on it which made it okay. Everything else was real nice, coleslaw tasted home made 😋

Curious to try their burgers so we shall definitely return!
Wayne T.
I had their 3 x cheese burger, of which one of the cheeses is the sauce.
I rate the burger patty, chips, serving etc. at a good 4!

Why then the 3 rating, I hear you ask?

Most times I will order my sauce separately on a sauce-burger, as I did this time.
The problem here is that my sauce was burnt in the pan, but I had already applied it to my burger and had taken a bite or two.

I thought about complaining about the sauce, but they would then have to re-do everything, so I struggled through with the meal...

What is perplexing though is that the manager on duty that night, said it was his favourite burger when he overheard that I ordered it, so why then was the sauce burnt?

Will I be back?

Maybe, but i'll try the sauce first before pouring it over a good burger!
Jennifer Crombie
Great vibe on a Friday night but terrible service. The waiters were hard to find, they ran out of champagne and wine glasses. The hamburgers were undercooked.
Garon Sedres
Amazing service, the food was so good 👏👏👏.

Just wished they would've told me that the burgers come with onion rings because then I would not have bought extra.

My husband and I love to go to Fat Harrys. The staff is friendly and the food is good. It is cozy inside and the atmosphere is relaxed. My only critique is the fact that the disability toilet is not actually accessible for people in wheelchairs? As an occupational therapist I was very aware of the fact that no person in a wheelchair will be able to access the toilet due to the step leading to the toilet. Something to think about 😊

This place has typical pub grub, the burgers being the main drawing card - and they definitely deliver. I had the beetroot and quinoa veggie burger, which came with onion rings and a portobello mushroom within the bun. It was packed with flavour and very filling - I was very impressed as burger places often neglect their vegetarian customers. I also tried their crispy potato skins, which were very tasty, as were their chips. Will definitely be back again, especially considering how reasonable it was.
Ivi Malotana
Fat Harry's is located in such a cool area in Kenilworth. The drinks were amazing. They had the best rock shandy I've ever had in my life. The burger was not as exciting in taste as it is in presentation. This is a good place though.

Stumbled across this place by accident because we wanted some espetada and they did not have, as the menu had recently changed . Items have been removed and is not the menu displayed here.

However

Not disappointed at all , in fact pleasantly surprised!!
Very welcoming !! Excellent service , awesome selection of music and a very rustic pub feel ..
It’s very laid back and has such a great vibe !!

If you wanting a good selection of gourmet burgers , I suggest you try this place .. Only had snapshots of them passing and looked at the menu !!! Looked amazing

We opted for prawns and ribs !! Definitely recommend as well

very tasty !!

We will be back soon

Fat Harry was my favorite place to hang out. Myself and partner use to come here to eat and have a few drinks 2 or 3 times a month.. Unfortunately this place lost its touch a few months back. Food is still delicious, they have a variety of drinks, but the service is lacking abit..
Elle Mbadaliga
This is a perfect location for easy drinks and food. And I must say, their wings are really affordable and a very big portion, had to take more than half home. The chilli poppers are very good. I can't wait for my next visit
Simone Izzard
We had been to Fat Harry's once before the revamp and thoroughly enjoyed it. We went again recently after the revamp and unfortunately were a bit disappointed. Our waitress was quite brusque and the food left a little to be desired. The R60 burger special doesn't include a side so that hikes up the price and the patty was very dense and not fresh tasting. The thin cut chips were rock hard. I'm not sure if it's teething problems, but I think the quality of the food and service was better before the revamp.
Matshepo Motlanthe
I always drive past this restaurant and this time decided to stop over for lunch.
Was welcomed with a cosy restaurant filled with great people as well...not to mention the daily lunch special. There was an extensive selection of beers and their food menu just got me so confused...In a good way.
Enjoyed the chicken curry, bangers and mash. I would also recommend the pepper steak pie
Elaine Smith
Food and atmosphere were great however in the burger and beer pairing menu it is not clear that the 1 pairing is actually brandy and coke not beer and you may not swop it out for another drink
Nick Atkinson
One of the best burgers I've had in a long while! The blender at the bar desperately needs new bearings or needs to be replaced however, the racket it made is the only reason I didn't rate my experience higher.
Lauren Niekerk
Such a cool place! Love the decor and the cool, casual vibe. I popped by with a friend one afternoon. Complimentary popcorn to start! 🍿We were keen to try their R60 lunch specials. Unfortunately they did not have the ice tea I wanted or the pie special that my friend wanted. In the end, I went for the lamb chop with mustard mash and my friend went for the bangers and mash. Generous portions and good value for money. Our waiter was a bit all over the place but when he did help us he was polite and friendly. I would like to go back to try more dishes, maybe for dinner or during one of the pub quiz nights.
Unopa Mazwigwila
Best place to do anything here. Like they have quiz nights!! I had the half baby chicken with Mediterranean veggies which was superb. Mind you I never veggies like I'm not a fan. But here Fat Harry's it's just perfect. The service is beautiful and the atmosphere is wonderful. I just wish they had karaoke that would be great.
Nicholas_Jon_D
Great service, and an amazing happy hour 5pm - 7pm. The lunch special is also great R60 for anything off that menu. I recommend the Chicken Curry, or the Grilled Fish and (Chips/Salad/Veg).
Mofieleli Sekatle
Andrew our waiter was great. The food took minimal time which was a lovely addition. We just went for a quick early supper but found it was happy hour. Nice surprise. Delicious cocktails we had. The food itself was scrumptious... we definitely intend on going back

We were a large table that pulled in here on Saturday night for dinner and a few drinks after the rugby. This place was buzzing and despite our big table and the restaurant being packed, our waiter did a great job of keeping everyone happy and remaining up-beat and friendly. I tried their calamari starter, their Black Mussels, and their peri peri chicken livers. All were tasty and well-priced but the Mussels were undoubtedly my favourite - that creamy white wine and garlic sauce is always a winner! The band played a selection of old hits and the vibe was great.
Zakiyah
Great atmosphere - we went on a Saturday night. They had a live band and drinks specials every hour on the hour.

Burgers and cocktails were delish, they use great burger buns and the service is relatively quick. I'll definitely be back for more.
Shinéad
Fairly good spot. Menu seems amazing but it's really not. I had the steak and fries with mushroom sauce, but the sauce was really bland. A friend had the baby chicken but also agreed... no flavour. Another friend enjoyed the polenta fries with blue cheese sauce - She even had seconds! Wide variety of drinks and craft beer. Very vibey. Excellent service from Andrew!
Bookings are recommended.

We decided to have lunch at Fat Harry's today. I kicked off with a nice refreshing mango daiquiri and hubby a Devil's Peak craft beer which were really cold and so refreshing. We then decided to give the R50 lunch time special of fish and chips a try and ordered a side of onion rings to share - it was absolutely delicious. It was a good hearty meal and great tasting. You really can't go wrong. If that was not enough I decided to try the Berry cheesecake with ice cream and hubby the Ice cream cake for dessert. It was so fresh, totally what the doctor ordered. I can highly recommend Fat Harry's in Kenilworth. The food is delicious and well priced, the service is great and the ambience perfect.

The Fat Cat with an insatiable appetite for easy laid back home cooking is readily affectionate to anyone who proffers him a tasty morsel. This resident creature of comfort and namesake for this local restaurant is named Harry. Much like the friendly fat cat of the neighborhood who enjoys good quality unfussy food and company, so was my experience at the aptly named eatery Fat Harry’s. READ MORE ON MY BLOG

Not sure why it's taken us this long to come try Fat Harry's with them being just down the road from us, but now we know! Lunch specials for R50 and 25% off burgers Sunday and Monday nights.

I had a strawberry mojito and the first sip blew me away. Trying to remember what it was made from, but not on the attached menu. The burger I chose was topped with bacon, mushroom sauce and caramelized onions, but was a little cold. The sweet potato chips are average, but the onion rings were amazing, crispy and not oily at all.

Another table ordered the beer pairing slider board and it looked so good! I don't even drink beer and wanted to try it. The waiters were polite and friendly and we enjoyed our afternoon there.
Matt Warwick
Whoever you guys had singing on Friday (02/12/16) was terrible. Butchered every single song he sung, and destroyed any form of vibe. If he goes, it'll be a decent place
Estelle Roux
The R50 lunch special is the best! Fries super crispy, and hake well cooked and seasoned. We did, however, wait for almost an hour to get our food, even though the place really wasn't full at all.
Ushandra Mansfield
We were very happy to see a new spot in the village but was really disappointed. Food was below expectation and the waitress could not care less. She only smiled when she got a tip...which she seriously did not deserve but we always do. We won't be back...
Derek Miller
Popped in for a quick lunch and was pleased to see that there were quite a few tables occupied. I chose a high table outside but it was a bit windy. The lunch specials looked interesting at R50 so I chose the Beef Currie. The service was prompt and efficient but not spectacular. The Currie came at the bottom of a huge salad bowel with a boiling hot plate underneath. The rice however was quite dry and cold. The portion was fairly small but for R50 acceptable. The massive pile of rocket was strange, not really usually accompanying Currie? I was quite difficult to eat it out of the deep bowl. The flavours were not great and overall I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I should have had a burger? It seems consistency is a problem as reading the reports it seems people either LOVE or HATE this place! I'm kind of uncertain so maybe I'll need to come back for supper and a craft beer?

Great atmosphere, good service and tasty food. Awesome place to have a chilled meal and drinks with friends. Definitely recommended. Will be back as usual.
StuieMic
This is a hidden gem!!!! The food and beer is amazing!! The atmosphere is just perfect!!!
Their burgers are really amazing and up in my top 5 of burger joints!!!
If you stuck for which burger to get, try their slider and beer pairing!! Absolutely the BOMB!!! 👌🏻👌🏻

Awesome fun was had and seems like a gem of a place, the food however was a major let down. I pretty much only managed a third of my burger, the rest I couldn't stomach. Some folks had other meals which looked good, so maybe just got a bad batch hey. Will have to go back and test the theory, gets the benefit of the doubt though.
Carl Thomas
Met the crew for some drinks and burgers yesterday evening. This place is honestly a little hidden gem. Rustic and intimate feel to it. They have happy hour daily between 5 and 7 and various meal specials as well. I had the 3 cheese cheese burger was cooked to perfection and really delicious. I enjoyed the chips and onion rings as well. The drinks were really good and nicely priced and the food is nicely priced as well. To top it off they have live music as well to keep you entertained.

Will definitely be returning for some more items on the menu.
Christopher Mills
Have been a few times, lunch and dinner. The pub-type menu during the day is really well priced and the food is good. Service is decent too. I'd definitely recommend trying their lunches!
Wez_Undercover
It's ok. Very bland for my liking. The vibe the food, just everything. Went to go watch a rugby game. The starters were good but not great. Maybe just not my cup of tea. To drive all the way to Kenilworth I expect a little more. I also never found the Fat Harry guy.
Liezl
What an awesome place! We just randomly googled a place, and came across Fat Harrys. Lunch special til 6pm for R50 was so delicious - we all had the prego baby chicken. Lol. Their happy hour cocktails were THE BEST! And it also happened to be quiz night! Which turned out to be an excellent time! Will definitely be back for those cocktails and for quiz night!
Darla Dates
What a fantastic pub. Love the feel and the look. Met a friend for lunch so it was the perfect spot to catch up over a drink and a meal while having a chilled time. Our waiter was a star...so attentive, helpful and friendly while at the same time being super professional. My Mojito and the bubbly made for a good afternoon and the tapas chicken livers was the best I've had in a long time....really delicious. But I have to say my Mozambiquen Prawns didn't hit the spot. The prego sauce was delicious but the prawns was dried out and old...very disappointing.

Nevertheless I will come back and sample their other offerings.
Kelly Frielinghaus
Was super impressed with the size and decor and ambiance of the place. Ample parking which is always a bonus. Super attentive waiters too. Ordered a three cheese burger which I unfortunately devoured before taking a photo 🍔🙈📷 Wasn't too keen on the thick potato chips, they didn't have much flavor. But all the ladies scored a free cherry beer with main meals. Absolute win! Very cool place and will be back to try more. 👌
Simira
Great burgers! Would definitely recommend the liefmanns burger!
The burger and beer pairing (see picture) is definitely worthwhile if it's your first time here. Love it!
David Els
Craft beer and great traditional pub lunches! The day we were there the pub had a R50 lunchtime special, absolutely amazing value for money.
I had the 'home made' pie and chips, which was chicken pie. I was very impressed with the meal, full of flavour and a hearty meal.
Our waiter was very attentive and the service he gave us was exceptional.
The overall menu looked varied, there'd be a meal for everyone. What makes Fat Harry's different from other pubs is the burger and beer pairing section on their menu.
Hendrike McDonald
Good ambience and tasty food ruined by atrocious service. Waitress rolled her eyes at us multiple times, gave us incorrect information about the menu and was generally rude and disinterested. A venue with great potential but a good night ruined by the attitude of the staff.
Johnny Jol
Cozy, friendly neighborhood hangout. Nice selection of craft beers on tap. Decent selection of tasty, satisfying food. Service is chilled and friendly.
JonJon Clark
We met my friends cousins here for a nice little dinner and was astounded by the vibe! Friday night and the place was absolutely pumping!

I enjoyed the fusion salad which was really tasty and the others all had burgers. They told me the burgers were great, however they lacked any garnish rendering them fairly dull. Also when asked for a single shot whisky, a literal single shot of whisky came in a shot glass served on a plate. Pretty funny cause of course it should have been served in a tumbler.
Moira Mirtle
This pub environment stood out as we drove past in this CT suburb. It has appeal from the road and we were looking for a lunch stop. Parking is plentiful which is a bonus, and we were greeted by a friendly smile. Our waiter was helpful and the menu simple but easy reading. We ordered bangers and mash and the serving was rustic in keeping with the decor. The food was good but helpings a little bit on the small side. The gravy was tasty and looked home cooked which made it feel like you weren't at a commercial eatery so that was a plus. The music playing was very fitting and certainly a wonderful vibe. It would be a great place to hang out a little longer if you have the time.
Vicky Lucas
Visited Fat Harry's about a week ago and had a terrible experience. I ordered their jalapeño burger, little did I know that the patty itself would have the inside of a jalapeño popper.

My burger patty was raw so I therefore sent it back. No manager came to check if everything was alright or apologize. The service was shocking. My burger came back to me and was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside, I however did not complain again because of the lack of consideration that this restaurant has for its customers.
Lynn Boffa
Great watering hole close to home for me and all my friends. They do a great Banting Burger! We go here often because there's no fuss & it's warm & cosy with big TVs and fireplaces inside.
Jessy Da Silva
Had a awesome night at Fat Harry's with friends great food and atmosphere.
I shared a jalapeño and pesto burger with my partner both were really good! Took part in the Tuesday trivia night had a overall good experience. For all the beer lovers there are a great selection of beers.
Meg Maccallum
Another last minute date night that proved to be very enjoyable! Fat Harry's is bustling on a Friday night, but still pleasant enough for a quick dinner. As a veggie, the menu is quite limited but for meat lovers, it's paradise. Their burger selection is extensive and sis equally matched by the bar menu. We had the Veggie curry and the pork ribs - curry was great and the chips that came with the ribs were to crispy and amazing!
Georgia Stonehouse
I came here a few weeks back with a bunch of people. The atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxing. We were served by Butler and he was accommodating, friendly and very up to date with the menu, he could easily answer our questions (of which there were a few). The food was delicious and came very quickly, two of us had steak (which was delicious) and two of us had burgers (I was one of them), I was incredibly happy and incredibly full. I also loved the complimentary popcorn-very fun! Would definitely go back.
Renier Nolte
Two weeks ago my family and I went to Fat Harry's for dinner. We were extremely satisfied with our experience. The service was fast and efficient. Our waiter (Butler) had a great knowledge of the menu and always made sure we were looked after. Our food arrived quickly and was delicious. (would recommend the steak to anyone not in the mood for FH's brilliant burgers) The vibe was festive, especially after the disco ball was turned on. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys quality beer and service.
Jamie Jacobs
The experience I had here was bittersweet as I celebrated my birthday here about a month ago. It was bitter because all my friends complained of their burgers in that the patty tasted like plain minced meat without any basting or flavour (I had a bite to check). This was disappointing as I wanted everyone to be satisfied with their meals given it was a special occasion. It was sweet because the calamari tapas my friend and I ordered was the complete opposite with its vibrant, spicey flavours and the great sauce to complement it. The staff were fairly helpful, but I did have to walk all the way up to our waiter at the end of the night to ask for the bill. I would perhaps go there again for drinks but maybe not a burger.
Lauren Gentle
My husband and I went for dinner at Fat Harry's last night. What an experience!

The food is superb!I ordered the ribs and what I paid for was even better than what I expected. My ribs were sticks, sweet and elated off the bone. It is so refreshing to go to a restaurant that actual has such a diverse wine menu and not the generic wines you usually find on a wine list.

Being a lover of craft beer too,I simply loved the option of beer and burger pairing

Fat Harry's is truly value for money and has a great atmosphere too!
AlvD
The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is delicious, especially the burgers. On one or two occasions service has been a little slow, but for the most part it is great.
Nikita (Haefliger) Oosterberg
What nice relaxed spot. The place has a chilled bar / wine farm feel. Their live entertainment is also great. The chicken livers are.to.die.for. They are a MUST!!
Emma
Tasty goodness. We had the bangers and mash and the vegie pasta. They were kind enough to make the dish for me without mushrooms. Some supposedly good restaurants are unable to do this because their food is not made fresh so I was super impressed. Have a wide selection of craft beers which is a plus. Will definately be back.
Kos Gangster
Excellent venue with delicious gourmet burgers. A particular highlight was the cream cheese and jalapeño stuffed beef patty. My only concern.... Why no chicken wings? :P
JotterJo
Great pub grub in a fabulous setting. The bar has been tastefully decorated and the staff are very attentive. Burgers, tapas and bar snacks area all yummy and worth going back for again and again. Large screen TV for games in super atmosphere
Dayne Williams
Awesome music, cool decor, and that cheese stuffed gourmet burger.......Wow hands down the best burger I've had in years. Good work team keep it up!
Rebecca Francis-Pope
Great spot if you're looking for a chilled, vibey evening, friendly service and good pub-style food. Had the grilled fish and chips which was great, and my friend had the three-cheese burger which looked delicious! I went during the week and it was quite busy, so this is probably the place to be on a Friday evening! :) Will definitely be back.
Michelle
Really a great chilled spot. Burger was amazing, one of the best I've ever had. Waiter was extremely friendly. Music is ridiculously loud for a restaurant vibe, not great if u want a catch up. And finding parking isn't easy u need to drive around the block a few times. But I will 100% go back
Carmen Morris
I love this place! Good food, great vibe and with excellent service from waiters like Liam you can't go wrong. The strawberry beer and cheese platter are my favourites.
Paul Vicars
My new favourite local spot in the burbs! Brandy n cola on tap and some really top meals from the kitchen. Not what you expect, way better! Make sure you ask for Liam to serve you, proper service!
Lauren Daniels
Our favourite spot! Liam is THE BEST waiter. By far. Food is great. Craft beer selection is awesome. Highly recommended - good music, good vibes.
Jess Douglas
Local spot...food was great we all had burgers I had the lamb burger which was a bit cold so a bit undercooked...as well as my sweet potato fries a bit under done....service was fantastic!

I would recommend the beef burger over the lamb for sure...
Andrew Winter
This place has transformed since opening. Our first visit was mediocre, but I still remember the roasted bone marrow (which was great), but that was obviously down to growing pains.

The service and staff are now great, food perfect for the atmosphere and vibe is great. Regularly get caught up in the great vibe and stay for a few more drinks than we planned. Keep it up!
Carrie Le Roux
Easy-going atmosphere, cool but not trendoid, excellent service and the best cheese burger this side of the N2. A good choice for watching the rugby and a great beer menu. I think Fat Harry's is just what second avenue needed.
Jager Sisters
Nice local spot with a great space, good service and tasty food. I had the grilled hake and chips and it was a delicious and a generous portion. They have a nice selection of craft beers as well. Good place to go watch the rugby.

So after all the great things I have heard from friends, mostly via Facebook I must admit, I decided to give Fat Harry's a go.

From the minute you walk in the venue grips you with its modern yet rustic finishes. The awesome light fittings handmade by a local craftsman, chalk boards hanging from the ceiling and the big welcoming tables are but a few of the impressive things about Fat Harry's.

A wide selection of artasinal craft beers were quite a delight. Unfortunately this chef was driving and could only indulge in 1 if the many choices. The ladies draft was also rather interesting.... little too cherry like but I guess that's why they're brewed.... for the ladies.

Jade, our very sweet and knowledgeable service ambassador thrilled us with a selection of gourmet burgers which certainly did not disappoint. I opted for the bolting seasoned and a 3 cheese. BIG FAT ONION RINGS.... need I say more.

All in all a pretty decent experience. Looking forward to giving the rest of the menu a try specifically a selection of the great tapas on offer... perhaps on one of the night's they sport a live band.

Good job guys.... keep it up!!! JADE... YOU ROCK!!!
2Travelbugs Review
Nice vibe and friendly staff. The decor and layout is better than most in the area too. I understand why it is called Fat Harry's now, the food portions are massive. Almost everyone at the table took home about half their meal in a take-away. The veg curry could have easily fed 3 people, and that as well as the fish portions were the biggest I have ever seen at a restaurant anywhere ever.
The food tasted good, and there is a good selection of craft beers. Everything was well priced too, and we enjoyed our visit.

Lovely new casual dining spot, with a laid back setting. Nice for a couple of drinks (huge drinks menu), some food and to watch the game. Service was good and our waitress was lovely. We ordered the salt and pepper squid, and the mozambican queen prawns, prawns were delicious, the rice was just a bit over cooked. Lovely nonetheless, we will definitely be back to try the pork belly.

Good food, good wine, good vibe. Was quite noisy but hey that's atmosphere, right? Had the jalapeño burger and it was brilliant. The option of sweet potato fries is also a nice addition.

Great location, beautiful space, delicious food. Friendly staff and good service. Everything you want/need at a local neighbourhood gathering spot.

Pub grub styled meals with a long list of drink options.

Food never disappoints... Awesome burgers, lovely staff, worth a visit... And a return!
Try the jalapeño burger, pork belly and the al natural mussels

Good for a few drinks, but not their food. Was served a raw burger which came back looking like I'd been punished for sending it back to the kitchen. Friendly staff and appealing decor though.

Only for the young.
Poor service. Food was horrible. Too much rosemary. Recommended for drinking not eating.
Good atmosphere.
Decor is creative.

A group of us went there on Wednesday for supper - food really disappointing, 3 of the burgers were raw which we sent back, the steak was thin - almost like a minute steak, and the gnocchi was drowned in sauce and very soggy. Our waitress was having a smoke break outside when we were looking for her to order. Disappointing, have been there quite a few times for a beer and starters and had recommended Fat Harry's for our night out on Wednesday so felt really bad as everyone commented on the disappointing food

This is an experience I am not going to do again. We read really nice reviews of this place, but our experience was sorely lacking. I booked for a large table, a week and a half in advance. Due to the bad weather a number of our party pulled out and we phoned to change the numbers so that they could free up the excess space if they needed it. When we arrived, we were placed at a table next to the door. We noticed several large tables and asked if we were able to change due to the ice cold draft coming from the door everytime a smoker opened to go out. We were told by the manager that all the tables were booked and therefore could not be moved but he assured us that once the place filled up, the draft would no longer be a problem. Well, not only did the table behind us get seated with walk ins who only drank, the more people drank the more they smoked and the more door was opened and closed. In the end it was horrible.

Add to this the long wait to place drinks after the initial order, the mediocre food, wrong meals and the awfully loud and ill placed live entertainment, this was truly one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a while.

To put the cherry on the top, our bill arrived and it was wrong and there was an incident with a severely drunk patron that the staff were not trained to deal with.

Unfortunately not a redo for me and Rhyder.
Cozy & Casual. Quirky live music makes for a great Friday night vibe. Will definitely be returning for their excellent service and the Roast Pork Belly friends rave on about.

The friendly staff and excellent service makes this a great eatery. With special chef selections each day this should become a regular hot spot. The laid back vibe is great for an after work dinner. We recommend the Lamb Burger.

The drinks menu is why they got a 4! Their Dragon Fiery Ginger beer is phenomenal! I had a burger special with cream cheese & jalapeños in the patty - tasty but not the best burger I've had. The patty itself fell apart a little bit. The sweet potato fries were cut a little too big for my liking and so were a bit too soft for me but I still enjoyed my meal. Was at a table of 9 and everyone enjoyed their meals. I will definitely be back to try out some more of their beers and other drinks on offer! My mom says that the Durban beef curry was delicious.

My family and I were here for a birthday - what a treat! The beef burger stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeños was delicious. Wonderful vibe and cool music. The fireplace was a great relief after the cold of winter. Will definitely come again

I have been here twice and really enjoyed myself both times. Their food is pretty delicious, services is good and it's quite a vibey place. Our table was small and a friend messed their food by mistake. They Brough biltong while she waited and a new meal free of charge. Very impressed

We’ve been to Fat Harry’s a few times since they opened up and it’s always been packed, loud and festive.

Last night was the first time we ordered anything to eat and despite the mixed reviews we had heard about their food, we really enjoyed our cheese and charcuterie board – 3 decent size pieces of cheese (Camembert, blue & cheddar), mixed meats, homemade tomato chutney, sliced gherkins and toasted ciabatta – the portion of bread was teeny tiny to start but they were more than happy to bring us some more when we asked (piggies). There’s a great wine and beer selection – wine glasses are big and go for around R30-R35.

We loved the warm indoor fireplace, good music and the fact that they are load-shedding friendly.

Ooh, they have bone marrows on the menu… I’ll be back for some of those for sure.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to see Fat Harry’s doing so well… all the others have failed in the Old Banana Jam spot. Long may it last!

Had the most awesome time on Saturday! Rugby - great food and drinks - festive atmosphere - all with top service! One of my new favourites :)

Good service and an awesome menu. A great venue for occasions and a drink! A must for all locals! Try the salt and peppe calamari or a good burger!

I really enjoyed the decor. The muscles and squid heads was amazing. I also enjoyed the Mitchell's Milk and honey. Yum yum.
Staff was friendly and welcoming. Def worth a visit.

Oooh I like Fat Harrys a whole lot. Service is great, selection of drinks are not too bad, I'm not a beer drinker, but discovered my girly beer.you have to try it out...

Fat Harry's is a great spot for drinks and pub fare. I had a delicious burger that had the patty stuffed with three cheeses. It came with onion rings and chips. Would highly recommend Fat Harry's - but would like to see pizza on their menu in future.

I like Fat Harry's because it offers a nice alternative to it's competitors nearby when you feel like something new.

It has really delicious food and a wonderful selection of craft and specialist beers. Always very buzzy so if you're looking for a quiet drink and dinner, this might not be for you.

Highly recommend the smoked salmon, cream cheese and crispy capers carpaccio and the sticky toffee pudding with ginger ice cream!

A newish eatery in Harfield village, a nice alternative for the locals rather than the usual sports pubs always packed. Amazing decor with a rustic feel, Fat Harry's prides itself on its local selection of craft beers. The food offered ranges from various tapas dishes to larger mains. I had the Salt and Pepper Squid with paprika mayo, A good choice indeed. The only downside is the slowish service as well as the awkward high-sitting tables. Other than that, it could quickly become a regular meeting place for your weekly get-together.

Very good food, very good drinks, awful sound system and music. Although the service was slow it was good. Recommend the pork belly. Good parking.
