Review Taste Of Mumbai - Kempton Park

Sahil Joshi
Taste of Mumbai in Johannesburg offers outstanding food, with their butter chicken being a standout. The buffet is both delicious and incredibly affordable. It's worth noting that within Emperor's Palace, this is the sole Indian dining option available. Surprisingly, some of the dishes here rival what I've tasted in India itself 🇮🇳.

What a pleasant surprising experience. Taste of Mumbai truly a restaurant to visit. From the 1ste Hello with a smile of note from our server (Doctor Saabi) till the last goodbye we have never had such a attentive server from any restaurant before. The food is true to the name, most amazing taste and so much to choose from. To the Chefs in the back great job guys. Only thing that needs attention is the Menu needs to get replaced with new Menu's. Will be back soon.

As a South Africa resident living in Randburg , My wife and I brought 2 USA visitors to Taste of Mumbai straight on arrival from OR Tambo Airport last night. The experience was disappointing for the following reasons: 1.The chicken breyani , butter chicken and lamb curry was cold and did not have much taste and flavour. 2.The veg curries were also cold and lack taste. One of my visitors is a Vegetarian. He was not impressed. 3.No roast on the menu 4.Only one hot desert offered .No ice-cream 5.The buffet lacks class and may have been leftovers from the lunch menu 6.The only item appeasing was the fresh naan supplied. Will never visit this place again.Embarassed me as a host to my USA guests after spending R811.One of my visitors stayed with Mango juice as the veg fries he dished out made him sick.I was forced to pay his full buffet price of R150.

Taste Of Mumbai is located in Food Court in Emperor's Palace. No efforts have been spared to make approach, not only to Taste Of Mumbai but all the foodie establishment in food court. The complete roof has been painted, illuminated and designed in such a way that it gives an illusion of sitting under the open blue sky with wisps of clouds and it feels beautiful and wonderful. This reflects in increased foot prints and profits not only for investor's but also to all the restaurants which cater for cuisines from all over the world. Taste Of Mumbai, as the name implies caters for Indian cuisine. We were there for dinner. Seating is in the main plaza over looking the giant replica of statue of David by Michel Angelo and illusion of blue sky's overhead. Ambiance and 'atmosphere ' felt just great. Buffet dinner was very good. Service prompt. Do visit it once when in Johannesburg.

Taste of Mumbai is a great Restaurant in Emperors Palace. It is really good Indian cuisine Restaurant where you can find enjoy Indian, Pakistani and bangali taste. There is Buffett which I can suggest you guys per person is cheap and it has Roti, Beryani and Mutton Curry Chicken Curry. And also salad is really very amazing in this Restaurant. I love butter chicken and Mutton Beryani from this Restaurant. There's also little bar where they serve alcohol. Table services are really awesome.

Horrible disgusting food, paid and walked out, tasteless, no flavor, service was non existent, the staff is rude and the manager is not understanding, we paid for uneaten food and walked out this restaurant because the manager simply looked the other way when I expressed my unhappiness with the dish and the waiter referred me to the chef, We had the worse dining experience here and will never go back! The Naan was cold, The dish had soy sauce in it and was supposed to be an Indian dish. Wish I could rate this establishment a 0. I would have understood if the manager at least took some interest in our issues with the food and listened and rectified.

worse service ever, ordered the meat platter which was meant to come with land mince samosas which came with chicken instead, the butter naan was crispy as toast and the chicken was raw I mean pink inside the chicken. the manager took offense to my complaint. to top it off they still wanted to charge me for the full bill.

If you are very hungry and looking for some buffet
..this is your pallet place... Wide variety for a hungry chap... I just loved the fish fry and chicken and lamb Curries....:)

Taste of Mumbai is a sub-standard Indian restaurant a Emperors Palace. The buffet is limited, with a lack of taste. The lamb curry was highly basic with no ginger and garlic to subdue the intense lamb undertones. Service was satisfactory which contributes to my rating of 2/5. The rice pudding dessert was average. Will not be going back.

My love for traditional food is at its happiest at this lovely restaurant. Had a lovely dinner with my family and each chosen dish suited everyone's tastebuds. Great for big family suppers.

The food is good but I have tasted better at different restaurants. Yet the food is fairly priced and I hope they do improve so I can go again

The food was old and bad tasting. The salads had been standing the whole day and smelled bad. All in all, very, very disappointing. The chef stands around the whole time playing on his cell phone and ignoring customers, instead of checking with customers if they are happy with the food. I will not recommend this place to anyone, and will definitely not be going there again - waste of money and time.
Stay away from this place - it will disappoint you sorely:(

Definitely our favourite restaurant! Tasty food with great smells and vibes all round. The alcohol is cheap and the food is reasonably priced. All staff are extremely friendly and helpful too. We just can't get enough!

I would never suggest any 1 about this place,
They serve old nd rest rusted food in buffet and even they serve the same food which is in lunch as well as dinner which Is taste less , the chef is ruthless nd illmannerd wen we did al karte our food the chef couldn't prepare food nd he prepared something else , words from chef " gaadi me petrol nai hota toh chalta nai Hai kya kuch bhi karke ham chalate Hai " it means they can give anything what they want just to run their business !!!! They should change the name from taste of Mumbai to taste of gutter !!

Indian menu with good variety
Tastes ok must try non veg items on the menu
There buffet is also nice
Service is bit slow
Location is really nice as u can sit outside also near the fountain
Going to an Indian restaurant is always a winner when it comes to vegetarian food and this place doesn't disappoint. Always yummy food, no complaints on that side! The first time we went the service was dreadful but the second time was better. Unfortunately we made the mistake of ordering coffee which was disastrous as they had no idea what an Americano was and we ended up getting what seemed like Ricoffee!
Andries Christine Van Staden
Sorry to say but didn't actually enjoy this place. The food was also too spicy for my liking. Not saying it's bad but not for me thanks. Very busy spot in Emporers

Home taste away from home. Buffet spread from Veg to non veg Indian food. Makes Jain too.
Taste good
Ambience good
service bad. Who cares when travel agents issues dinner coupons.
Refiil was not done, desert empty by 8 pm.
Only best part hot Nan - parathas..

Went there for a Sunday buffet. It took a while before the starters were ready. They advertised for veg and meat starters and only served veg. When we had asked why, they said it was the chefs choice. We told them that is false advertising. The food just did not cut it for me. The butter chicken was horrific, the fried starters were drenched in oil and the naan was cold. Would not go back.

Quality of food has gone down. I once loved the buffet here but now it dissapoints. Butter chicken gravy was very watery. There was no fresh naan bread being made. Bhajia starters was cold and hard. Dissappointing...

One of the worst restaurant that I have been in a long time. We are a team of 10 with 2 kids went there on the 29th Dec 2015 after the Garden of Lights.

We Chose the Buffet option.

All the 8 of the adults felt the same as mentioned below.

1. Attitude of the waiter: The food was not warm, it was cold. When we advised one of the waiter to heat the food, the response that we got was shocking, He said that it is not his duty as he is not our waiter and he started talking in Hindi and used few swear words. I did mention to the waiter that I do not understand Hindi, but he kept repeatedly talking in Hindi. After few minutes of hard word exchange the Chef came to our table and agreed that the food was not warm and they are going to supply us Warm food.

2. Taste: They had 7 to 8 items on the buffet menu, one of the dish we all wanted to have was Butter Chicken. After they warmed the food, it really tasted different. I guess they must have either added something after our debate, or brought us the one that was prepared days before.

Overall it was not a pleasant experience and we ended up not eating anything much.

The overall shock was, when we paid the bill and complained them about the butter chicken, the waiter who had the bad attitude literally said that if you do not wish to eat then don't and walked away from us with this attitude face.

First of all this restaurant do not understand how to treat the customers and second off all their food is not tasty or healthy.

Thanks for reading the review. I wont recommend this restaurant to any of my friends.

I have added the picture of the Chef and the other Staff, couldn't get the picture of the waiter with the worst attitude.

So , after the rain and a premiere of a movie, we decided curry on a rather chilli evening would do the trick. Service is ok, buffet was disappointing, cold fish, stale naan, they did bring fresh ones after our request though. Not a great experience, will we be back.. Not for buffet!!(Emperors)

A nice selection of Indian Food on their buffet. The naans are made fresh as you want. The meals were all of a comfortable chilli and they were very tasty. Waiters were friendly and attentive.

Hi

Every once in a while something good happens that you feel you have to report!

I was having a meal on 21 October 2015 at about 19h00 at Ocean Basket in the Food Court (staying over at the Mondeor), when a serious altercation happened next door at the Mumbai Place restaurant. An Indian guy having a meal, became VERY abusive with staff and things got out of hand with him shouting and swearing and actually getting physical with the Mumbai restaurant staff. A crowd of spectators watched as the situation aggravated.
Your security staff came in and I watched this tall, fair Guard (I think he was Afrikaans speaking), calmly took the situation under control and defused a potentially very ugly altercation. In the end the Indian guy even came to shake his hand!

The purpose of this email is simply to commend this guard to you: I don't know his name or Employer, but I really would appreciate it if you could forward this mail to his employer.
It is necessary these days to not only complain, but also to acknowledge excellence and reward this. Amazing restaurant at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. We visited this place for a buffet dinner during our stay at the Peermont D'oreale Grande.

Things on the buffet:
Yellow Daal
Mix veg
Fried fish
Butter Chicken
Lamb curry
Rice & breads

There were some other items in the vegetarian section as well but I don't remember them as I mostly ate the non veg dishes.

The food was amazing. All the items under the non vegetarian section were cooked very well and it was very hard for me to pick which dish I liked more. Even the tandoor breads were cooked really well which I wasn't really expecting in an out of India restaurant. Out of my little interaction with he staff, I found them polite and dedicated.

This was definitely one of the restaurants I would highly recommend in South Africa for Indian food lovers.

The owner here is so understanding, even after people here craving for all non veg stuff he provided us with proper jain food with no hustle and bustle. The food tastes delicious, the service was really mannered and the location is perfect ,only that mattered was its bot really taste of mumbai, India instead.
The Food Musketeer
I'd definitely recommend their buffet option. Its got great variety and the food is pretty good whether its the starters or mains its got good flavour. Unfortunately they lack dessert options and are very limited and its not their strong point which is sad because there are so many good indian sweet options to attempt to round off the good menu they have.

*updated review 9 aug 2015* yet another indian restaurant that has let me down hence the changed scoring. The food here use to be amazing. Today we did the buffet option again but there was no taste to anything. They had butter chicken, lamb curry fried fish brinjal and potatoes. Naan that was very tough. The lamb was chewy fatty and boney hardly any meat pieces. It was very bland. I think the starters had more kick to it. Lemon pickle was nice and the chilli bites. We ordered dessert.. the soji was terrible it was like eating porridge. I tasted the "rice pudding" which was very liquidy initially i thought it was vermicelli. We also took the " lemon meringue" which was lemon flavoured ice cream with meringue dipped in chocolate.

I quite enjoy Indian food. Although Taste of Mumbai was not the greatest, it did not completely dissapoint, but it could do much better. The service was swift, and the people were friendly. In general the food was alright. I had the lamb meal, it was slightly above mediocre. It did not have the usual exciting taste of an average Indian dish.

Taste of Mumbai felt like a fast food place trying to be a restaurant. You won't be completely missing out if you never visit.

The starters were cold and tasted like they were made days prior. There was a poor selection of main courses. Very disappointing. Won't be back.

Great starters platters especially crumbed prawns and fried fish.

Lamb Korma and paneer masala was brilliant.
Underrated in my opinion.

Would definitely come back.

Very reasonable curry buffet. Service xould be better, but for the price you gets what you pays for.

You cannot have a Mumbai themed indian fine dine restaurant and dishes in Paneer not available. Sorry, it is sad and you need to mention it in the Menu or Board. To add on it, despite mentioning and making all our orders from vegetarian section, when we were told that the first ordered dishes are not available - the waiter kept repeating suggestions for non-vegetarian dishes. Please update your staff on India and to make food mentioned in Menus because we entered after checking and confirmed A la carte menu.

I love good Indian cuisine. I ordered lamb biryani as a take away and went home to find terribly tasting curry and rice - in fact I had to throw it away - one of those very rare occasions. I queried this with the supervisor or the manager, only to be informed that they prefer to do it this way as majority of their customers are whites. If this is the case, they should say "MADE FOR WHITES", NOT genuine Indian food at the entrance.

I had to steal my wife's vegetable korma which we had bought as a takeaway, that evening , and it was at least nice.

One of the best Indian restaurants in Johannesburg. I have never been let down and the service is brilliant. The Butter Chicken is amazing!!! :)
