Review Cape To Cuba - Kalk Bay - Kalk Bay

In loveeeee with this summer bar šŸø I love this place too much. The cocktails are beyond delightful, and the food. The staff was great and helpful šŸ‘. Also, I had the pulled pork wrap that was super amazing.

I've visited many times before. Service was exceptional. If your peckish try the crab cakes.....absolutely brilliant. Serve great cocktails..... Go and soak up some Cuban atmosphere.

Kalk Bay along the False Bay coast of Cape Town is the place to be in summer. And Cape to Cuba is one of this seaside town' most popular haunts. The atmosphere even during lunch is festive. Cuban music plays making patrons do the boogey in their seats while taking in the panoramic views of the stunning Kalk Bay coastline. The food is delicious. I highly recommend doing tapas and trying a bit of everything. The chicken livers and Cuban bread were a standout as were the Chorizo and Shrimp fritters dishes. Filling too! For dessert, the bread pudding was a clear winner! And as you would expect, they boast an enviable drinks menu. The place is vibey and energetic during the day so it must really turn it on at night. That will be next time. If you don't have to drive yourself, consider taking an uber as parking around the popular Kalk Bay is as bad as everywhere else in the city.

First time visiting and instantly loved the tropical beach vibe and relaxed atmosphere! The service was great I was just disappointed by the calamari strips as we were only served about 6 or 7 in a small silver bowl and paid R95. Didn't bother to take pics of it because it didn't look appealing at all. I understand it's a starter but it just wasn't value for money. Didn't worry to order food after that, rather enjoyed the cocktails which were great. Would definitely recommend C2C šŸ˜Š

I recently had the privilege of dining at Cape to Cuba after their renovations, and I must say that the transformation is truly remarkable. The updated ambiance and improved facilities have completely changed my perspective of this restaurant. Initially, Cape to Cuba didn't align with our preferences as we found it to be overwhelming and bustling. However, the recent changes have completely turned the tables, creating an enjoyable and authentically pleasing experience. Before the renovations, Cape to Cuba had a vibrant and bustling atmosphere that didn't quite resonate with our personal tastes. However, the recent overhaul of the restaurant's design has truly impressed us. The revitalized ambiance strikes the perfect balance between vibrancy and sophistication. The new decor pays homage to Cuban culture in a tasteful and refined manner, creating an inviting and visually appealing setting. The attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the carefully chosen furnishings to the captivating artwork that adorns the walls. The renovations have not only enhanced the visual appeal but also improved the functionality of the space. The dining area now feels more spacious, providing a comfortable and relaxed environment for guests. The new seating arrangements offer versatility, accommodating both intimate conversations and larger group gatherings. Furthermore, the lighting has been thoughtfully adjusted, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere that complements the overall dining experience. One of the most notable improvements following the renovations is the level of service. Previously, the bustling nature of the restaurant often resulted in rushed and impersonal service. However, I am pleased to say that the staff at Cape to Cuba has undergone a remarkable transformation along with the physical space. The team now exhibits attentiveness, friendliness, and a genuine commitment to ensuring a memorable dining experience. From the moment you step foot in the restaurant, you are greeted with warmth and professionalism, setting the stage for a delightful evening. While Cape to Cuba always featured a diverse menu of Cuban dishes, the post-renovation era has brought about a refinement in presentation and flavor. The culinary offerings now showcase a skillful blend of traditional Cuban cuisine and innovative fusion creations. Each dish reflects a harmonious marriage of vibrant flavors and thoughtful plating, showcasing the chef's dedication to culinary excellence. From beloved classics like empanadas and slow-roasted meats to exciting reinterpretations of Cuban staples, the menu caters to a wide range of palates and preferences. In conclusion, Cape to Cuba's renovations have completely transformed the restaurant into a delightful dining destination. The concerns we initially had about the bustling and overwhelming atmosphere have been skillfully addressed. The revitalized ambiance, improved facilities, and attentive service have elevated the overall experience to new heights. Whether you are a fan of Cuban cuisine or simply seeking an inviting and authentic atmosphere, Cape to Cuba is now a place worth visiting. I highly recommend giving it a try and indulging in the culinary delights they have to offer.

I had such a lovely experience here with my sister and mom! The food, drinks, music, and atmosphere are incredible! It is quite an expensive place, but its perfect for celebrations! They offer great drinks and cocktails, and you can also opt to buy and smoke one of the cigars they have on sale.

Only had cocktails, but the atmosphere was festive. Staff was very attentive and friendly.

Good seafood and a good view of the bay and splashing waves. The Paella for one was hearty. The chilli šŸŒ¶ļø poppers were tasty and hot šŸ„µ.

Great venue for watching / listening to live music, live sports events on TV screens, while enjoying a beer, or being served tasty food . . . Food in the Havana Via restaurant is okay, I expected better seafood. The beef & hot chili sauce was very good . . .

Love the new look. Service was decent guess they still finding their feet post renovation. Needs some more attention to detail like the lighting around outside seating area. Celebrated my husband's birthday here a week ago and there was no light outside not even a candle when it got dark. They make the best cocktails on the strip(1#Mai thai)

Had a lovely time there. The atmosphere was amazing. I enjoyed the meal I had. I was served by a lovely lady who did the most in ensuring I'm well catered for definitely going back...

I had a table overlooking the harbour so it was great to just sit and watch the ocean. The food was amazing!. It took a little while to flag down my waiter in the beginning (which is the reason for 4 star rating) but once contact was made, service was swift and friendly.

My best friend and I stopped in Kalk Bay on our way to Boulders Beach and needed to eat lunch before continuing on. We decided to stop here since we were shopping across the street. So glad we did! We sat outside with an amazing view of the coast, talked for hours, drank wine, and ate delicious food. Our waiter was so friendly and attentive! Loved the entire experience!

After driving past some 3000 times (give or take) in my lifetime of living in the southern suburbs, I finally visited with a colleague down from the UK. We were there for a lunch on a Tuesday, so parking was a breeze, and the place was practically empty. This meant we could drink in the atmosphere and decor and take our time ordering and eating. The chicken and lime soup was sublime. I ordered a side portion of nachos incase my appetite was bigger than the soup, but I probably could have skipped the nachos. My colleagues loved the paella for one and the margaritas. Great view, great service, and I'll definitely be back for the soup.

Itā€™s a very Cuban-themed restaurant. I found the decor rather over the top, but then maybe thatā€™s what Cuba is like. The waiters are good and the setting magnificent as you overlook the little harbour. Food is good, not the best mussels Iā€™ve had but I give them a 4*

Terrible service by lazy waiters and management.

06.12.2019 After having brunch, it was extremely hot so we took a nice walk to CTC for a drink. It was packed, as a company was celebrating a year end function.<br/><br/>The food coming out of the kitchen looked good. We just had a drink to cool down. We had the Camokiwi - Seagrams Gin blended with Mint, Kiwi Puree, and a dash of Cranberry Juice. Delicious.<br/><br/>A great place to chill. Great views.<br/><br/>#TheFoodMusketeer<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerDrinks<br/>#TFMCapeToCuba

Never to return . Beautiful view but price versus quality and taste , no comparison. The restuarant is so empty ,they put reserved signs on tables to give the impression that they are busy .<br/>We had paella and the rum burger, tasteless

On my trip to Cape Town in October 2018, we stopped here for mocktails. Such a huge place with ample seating. It's like you are sitting on a beach only covered from the sun. The bar seating towards the back of the restaurant has amazing views of the water and the trains going by. Love the ambiance and the staff is so friendly and full of life.
Eleanora Bresler
Took an overseas guest here as she had seen the restaurant advertised on her hotel television. Well the advert was certainly better than the experience. The restaurant was empty yet service was so slow! Fish is freshly frozen says the waiter. Basically its frozen fish and not fresh! Bad attitude manageress who argued rather than pleased. Fried fish was more batter than fish. Really a bad experience and will never be back!
Tiffany Murray
We have been to Cape to Cuba a couple of times and weā€™ll definitely go a couple more! A little more assistance would be nice, but overall everything is good. Food and drinks is great! The view and restaurant setup is awesome, we were definitely in Cuba! <br/>

Disappointed is the best word. The decor is pretty funky, overcrowded but quite fun. The food though was overpriced, not particularly good and the service was crummy... Last time we went I remember the food as overpriced but donā€™t remember the rest of the experience.

DO NOT EAT AT CAPE TO CUBA! Found a whole tuft of hair (pictured) fried in to our food.Ā  We gave the dish back and waited at the restaurant for the manager/waitor/chef/anyone to come to our table and apologize and explain what was in our food... no staff member ever came to speak to us.Ā <br/>I posted the picture of the hairy food on my social media - only after the gross image went viral did the "restaurant" decide to reply (days later). Their response was even worse than the disgusting food served (response also in picture below) - they tried to justify that what we found in our food was not hair but rather a feather from their resident bird. Whether it's human hair or a bird feather- it's a violation of health code - bird feather even worse as it carries parasites, bacteria and viruses. We've been sick ever since eating there, the restaurant won't pay for the Dr bills.Ā <br/>In their response they never apologize, instead they are aggressive and tried to shift the blame on us as customers- accusing us of lying and planting the hair/feather there ourselves.Ā <br/>This is the worst customer service!Ā <br/>Even the locals refuse to eat at Cape to Cuba - hazardous health risk food and venomous customer service does not trump the pretty location.Ā <br/>This place needs an urgent visit from a health inspector, we're pretty sure the restaurant would lose its licence and be told to shut down immediately.Ā <br/>AVOID!
Darren McKinon
Food is hugely over priced and very average. I ordered the paella for 2 and there was hardly any seafood. The mussels were over cooked and burnt and stuck to the shells.<br/>Service was slow and little things were overlooked - like we had to pour our own wine.
Adele Du Toit
Weird and eclectic decor in this prime spot overlooking the harbor. I ordered the chicken soup and we shared the calamari tapas. Delicious Mojitos and live music at the bar make this a must visit establishment
Ashleigh Jordan Adriaans
Beautiful atmosphere and it really felt like I was transported to Cuba for the day. The staff were helpful and friendly. Although the prices are a bit steep it is worth every cent , with delicious food , amazing cocktails and an even better vibe
Diederik Van 't Hof
Really surprising spot. Looks terrible from the outside - but you are transported to a wonderland when you enter. Great vibe, good music, friendly staff, cool decor - and the food is great.<br/><br/>Sit on the veranda and look out over Kalk Bay harbour - enjoy the view with a ā€œcold oneā€ - and life is good.

Walked in around 3pm super excited to finally visit this place. We had just finished lunch at the Brass Bell (fabulous seafood and amazing service there) and wanted to park here for the next hour for afternoon tea and desserts. <br/><br/>When we mentioned that we only wanted desserts, we got told we could not sit in the main restaurant but had to sit outside at the bar area; as only main meals could be consumed in the main restaurant and tapas had to be eaten at the bar area.<br/><br/>Funny thing is that the tapas menu was a different menu and the desserts were part of the main menu... I then questioned the manager as for the reasoning and she said that it was the restaurantā€™s policy. I then pointed out the more than 10 vacant tables utterly confused, to which she answered that they were all reserved. Makes sense that more than ten tables would pitch up at 3 in the afternoon... right...<br/><br/>Not wanting to eat my refined dessert and tea next to a bunch of beer drinkers, we left to find a more accommodating place (Lekker cafe - a fantastic chic place just a few meters away) <br/><br/>Sadly I wonā€™t be back, even though this place has been on my bucket list for the longest time.

What an unexpected gem! After searching tirelessly for a decent plate of hake and chips (indeed, in Kalk Bay) we were recommended tot try either Cape to Cuba or Kalkyā€™s. <br/><br/>As weā€™ve already been to Kalkyā€™s on a previous occasion we decided to try the mysterious, technicoloured restaurant ON the sea front. <br/><br/>I was so so so SO pleasantly surprised by this eclectic little place. Yes, there are a million things all over and the best seats in the house are limited, BUT I loved every second. <br/><br/>The PiƱa Colada was excellent, the calamari was perfectly done and the hake and chips superb in itā€™s classic way. WOW! And we were lucky enough to get the perfect table for two with the view. <br/><br/>Iā€™ll definitely recommend Cape to Cuba for a unique experience in Kalk Bay. <br/><br/>

Such an amazing restaurant close to the beach and a great view, nice staff and amazing food šŸ“ šŸ‘Œ<br/>Thanks to all that made us feel very welcome. Keep it up guys.

Phenomenal. Truly! It feels like such a find, then you sit amid the perfectly curated Cuban decor, looking out at the sea and the train every now and then. The waiters were great, dressed for the occasion and all. The burger is the best anyone at my table had ever had. The paella and bread and butter pudding were delicious too. Great for a splurge - and really good photos!
Hendri Warricker
What a big dissappointment!! The worst food I have eaten in a very long time. Vastly over-prized and hugely over-rated. The only good impression is the decor. Portions are small, fish over cooked. The hoisin sauce on the ribs non-existing, thanks Mrs Balls... If I could give a negative rating, I would. <br/>

Yummy cocktails, great vibe, relaxing view and wonderful, eclectic cuban decor. We had a bit of a battle with some flies, so I would suggest some no fly candles. I'm looking forward to revisiting for some tapas and more cocktails!

If you have seen a great place with the view of the sea. Well, look no further. This place has the perfect view of the sea and railway. Good food is pretty hard to come by but the fish starter, the soup and the paella was really the food to die for.
Kaitlyn Williams
Really loved the look and atmosphere of this place. It's filled with eye catching pieces, random items and bright colours. It even has a sandy beach aspect to it too. We sat in the back dining area which faces on to kalk bay, wonderful view, and right next to the train tracks. I ordered a mai tai, deliciously strong, and along with it a side of calamari and a side of hake strips. Although the calamari was quite a lot, I must say I was quite disappointed to find that it was rather hard and chewy, same with my hake. Felt like I made a bad choice on my part as I saw our opposite neighbours receive a delicious looking plate of ribs and salad. My friend also ordered hake and chips and hers was wonderfully cooked, soft and the chips were a decent portion size. Our waitor was really understanding and helpful with our food and drink choices.

This place is a sneaky treat in Kalk bay it's colourful and authentic and unlike other places I have been in SA. From the cultural decor to the availability of purchasing a hubbly this place is well rounded with food which was delicious, the bread is delicious similar to a vetkoek for me personally with a Cuban edge. The venue is spacious and the view of the sea and the occasional train that passes by definately adds to the atmosphere. The missing star represents the service which isn't great however everything

Never disappoints. The setting, vibe, service and drinks are just amazing. And the Cuban bread with lime chilly mayo and jalapeƱo poppers is a must! Just live it

What a hidden gem!<br/><br/>Nestled below the street level on the busy Kalk Bay Main Road, sits an eclectic Cuban treasure. Cape To Cuba entices you from the moment you walk in with their beautiful music, mix-and-match furniture, and of course, the ever evolving scenery of Kalk Bay harbor and the passing trains. <br/><br/>The menu is concise and offers something for everyone. I had the Mojito chicken with Rice, Sweet Potato and Beans. What a DELICIOUS meal!<br/><br/>The staff were friendly and the service was very quick. <br/><br/>Definitely one place to visit when you are in or around Kalk Bay.

The service was absolutely terrible! I donā€™t think itā€™s an overall issue, I just think we had really inefficient waiter. We watched people around us arrive, order drinks and eat all while we were waiting for our cocktails.<br/><br/>The food on the other hand was perfect! The Cuban bread was perfectly cooked, the paella was tasty as usual. The cocktails were strong, well priced and a good size!

I love the colorful eclectic interior and the yellow metro rail train which swishes by every now and then... We needed a quick bite before an evening of jazz and found an available table at Cape to Cuba. We had a caprese salad, chicken liver salad, calamari and paella. I was a bit apprehensive as past experiences at C2C have been hit and miss, but this meal could not be faulted. And our waiter, understanding our time constraint served us promptly. The only thing that marred the experience for me was the strong smell of cigarettes from the smoking section outside.
Valerie Brandt
Want to impress on a first date?<br/>This is the place!<br/>Cape to Cuba is an eclectic mix of old school decay mixed with funk. A feast for the eye as well a party in your mouth. One can easily forget that you are actually in Kalk bay, South Africa and not in Havana, Cuba. <br/>A little angry with myself for ordering Voodoo instead of a mojito ( thought I would adventurous and accept the challenge, as the menu stated it was dangerous ). <br/>The menu is exciting with specialty dishes and cocktails, just need a Cuban shooter.<br/><br/>Portions are very generous. If you are like me you will have to choose between tapas or having a main. Sticky ribs is a definite must, chargrilled to perfection. Proper ribs with that, oh so tasty layer of fat.<br/><br/>A little disappointed that there is no smoking section in the restaurant, not very Cuban and defying the whole point of selling cigars in the restaurant. Probably not an issue for locals that is climatized, but the bar area, inside even more so, was just too chilly after dinner. Shivering is not my idea of fun, thus our cigars are still cigars and not the ending we hoped for. Jaycee<br/><br/>

We were surprised at all the negative reviews after seeing first hand what its all about. I mean the decor is uhm eclectic.. However that had no change with our review. The fish on the line was Yellow Tail. We had never tasted it before and it was great. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed the Ninos pasta (nice, creamy, saucey!) my husband and I had a couple fruity drinks. Very tastey. The seafood was very nice. Enjoyable. We didn't like the grit of the chocolate dessert. The manager addressed our concerns appropriately and we are completely satisfied. We have travelled to Cuba, and in fact were married in Cuba and we are from Canada. We sincerely will find a time to come back before our vacation is over otherwise we will be back the next time we are in Cape. Thank you!

Been back more than once to this unique, jewel of a restaurant. The food is amazing. The view from the outside balcony is gorgeous. The decor inside just adds to the "specialness" of Cape to cuba.
Jaryd Kay
Look, the food was decent - we had the paella which was tasty. The prawns were overcooked and the rest of the fish&chicken&chorizo was up to scratch. The service was really slow, there were no waitrons available to help us with the rickety table. The hail mary cocktail was far too chilly and not really pleasant. The menu is also outrageously expensive.
Peter Von Moltke
Terribly slow and inattentive service ruins any possibility of a good experience here. And when the food finally arrives it is bland and has all of the trademarks of a tourist restaurant. They don't care if you come back or not.
Kelvin Vincent
We regularly attend the pleasant live music they have every Sunday at the bar for a afternoon sundowner. It's vibey and cozy with the fire lit inside and quite often outside too on chilly days. They are famous for their mojitos but I prefer to enjoy the CBC they have on tap.
Nqobile Msibi
This is a great place to go for food and drinks after a day at Kalk Bay beach. I haven't tasted the food here yet but the vibe and the drinks are spot on albeit slightly pricy for a student. The staff are friendly, decor is laid back - it includes beach sand on the floor and a swing between the bar and the rest of the establishment. Check it out sometime :)
Lucy McGhie
Love the vibe and decorations of Cape to Cuba! Had birthday drinks here which was really chilled and relaxed and was able to have a lot of people ! Had very tasty cocktails such a cool place with a great view and good service
Raquel De Canha
Amazing!!! Brilliant cocktails, delicious paella, but to top it all of a stunning set up, unbelievable views and music that takes you to the beaches of Havana. Will definitely be back.

The main reason to visit this restaurant is the location and ambience . It looks like the inside of a villa in a tropical place inhabited by and obsessed crazy lady that decorated every inch of every surface. It's one of Cape Town's most popular location for photoshoots, very photogenic. The food is an ensemble of usual suspects, nachos, burgers chips, fried fishes. Nothing unique or perfectly done, but ok. I would suggest this place for a fun quick snack or drink in Kalk Bay , not as a culinary experience.
Sarah Mcghie
If you are looking for a unique dining experience then go to Cape to Cuba! I always feel like i am transported straight to the relaxed vibes of Cuba. The cocktails are delicious, and i had some starters to share. The chilli poppers were my favourite. This is one of my best spots to drink cocktails in Cape Town and relax.
Craig Calverley
What a joke. Went for cocktails, ordered from the " Hemingway Bar" got the worst margarita imaginable. Went inside and got good ones. Then was told the inside bar can't serve us. Got drinks from the outside bar. Again terrible drinks. Maybe get the staff trained outsideā˜¹ļøā˜¹ļø<br/>

Cocktails are really good, strong, but good.<br/>Service however is not good. People are not friendly, they don't even greet you when they give you the menu, they don't tell you about the drinks/food specials(if any) and unfortunately the service is really slow as well.<br/>Did not feel welcome and relaxed, so decided to not even eat there
Wendy
Great fun good. Bar has beautiful beach sand as a floor and sea as their view. Watch out for some seriously punchy and sweet cocktails. Decor is amazing and service is wonderful

Cape to Cuba has a buzzing atmosphere, a stunning view of Kalk Bay Harbour and beautiful decor that takes your imagination to another country. The staff are really friendly and there are all sorts of lovely areas to sit and have your meal or enjoy a delish cocktail. It gets very busy so I recommend booking a table if you want to have a meal there in the evening. To start off our lovely dining experience and celebrate the end of a very busy week we decided to try some of their cocktails. I had a Mango and Chilli Mojito which was absolutely incredible, it had just the right amount of a punch from the chilli which was balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the mango. I went for the Cape Calamari (flour and paprika dusted calamari strips deep fried, served with rice/hand cut chips/salad and tartare sauce) The portion size was so worth the money! The calamari was so tender and flavoured beautifully. I went for the hand cut chips which went perfectly together with the calamari and the scrumptious tartare sauce. My friend had the Mojito Chicken (chicken breast marinated in mint, rum, lime and a hint of garlic, served with couscous) which was really scrumptious too. For our dessert, we shared a Tres Leehes (moist traditional Cuban three milk and run cake, served with ice cream) It was a unique cake, I would definitely try it again but with cream instead as I don't think the half-melted ice cream did it any justice. I can't really think of how to describe the flavour of it other than unique, it had a very dense texture but it was quite tasty overall, lacked a little in the Rum. I would definitely recommend stopping in at Cape to Cuba to enjoy a cocktail and the lovely view, relax and enjoy a lovely meal.

Celebrated a birthday here on a Sunday afternoon. There are numerous choices of seating offered and the Cuban theme is well presented, from the decor to the waiters uniforms and the selection of cigar available to purchase. <br/><br/>Moving on to the menu, I had a refreshing kiwi cocktail, deliciously blended with mint. We shared chilli poppers that were good. And for mains I had the calamari, which is a very big portion, but the chips were rather horrible. Our waiter was attentive and the overall experience better than I had expected after reading some reviews beforehand. The train passing by a few meters away can be rather disturbing, but the view makes up for that.

Love love love this place. What an awesome vibe, cool Bar tenders and delicious cocktails. Definitely a must go to place. The tapas food is also delicious.
Stefan Wood
The worst food I have ever had in my life, no joke!!!, everything was way over cooked, over priced for the type of food they serve. Not sure how a place like this can survive, please do not go to cape to cuba
Megz Mackintosh
The best cocktail spot! Has such an awesome, trendy vibe & really makes you feel like you in Cuba with the beach sand on the floor & decor. I had a hibiscus & cranberry mojito that was delicious & refreshing. Will definitely be back. Not rating this a 5 because we tried to order nachos & the waiter said they don't serve nachos on weekdays (yet it was a Friday evening?).

I've given it 1.5 for location, a lovely casual spot that overlooks the Kalkbay Harbour. This is, however where the joy ends. Myself and two guests arrived last Saturday around lunchtime seeking out a decent place for a meal and seeing as though Cape to Cuba reserves the reputation of Institution to locals, we fell for supposed acclaim. Truthfully, I can't tell you whether the food and drink was any good because we weren't offered food, or service. We sat in wait of a very disinterested staff who, after avoiding our calls, finally came by for an order. Please note that the place wasn't busy in the least, and because we were unfamiliar with the layout, we sat at one of the tables in the bar/lounge area (food from a tapas menu is served here).Ā <br/><br/>Anyway, this bloke who couldn't be bothered aka our waiter came to the table with a grimace and upon asking him questions regarding the tapas/bar menu, he sneered that they don't do any sides besides chips due to their limited kitchen function and if we wanted a more extensive menu we would have to go into the restaurant's cavernous section for a more formal dining experience. I disregarded his unprofessional manner and chalked it up to a bad day, but thought to myself, why didn't anyone mention this as we walked in? Anyway, silly setup aside. We move across to the inner dining area and low and behold, a waitron obviously keen on his job offers to pull apart one of the larger tables to seat us.<br/><br/>Ā Contrary to what I thought, this area was also fairly informal and there were at least 3 other 2 seater tables that could have easily been transformed into a 3 seater with the twist of a chair. We stand in the middle of this heavily ornamented room while the waiter sets something up for us, but he is pulled aside by what I'm assuming is the hostess, she orders him to stop and we awkwardly survey the exchange, wondering when we will be approached or whether maybe on this day we had been cloaked en masse in an invisibility shield. She finally, unenthusiastically comes over and kindly tells us that we cannot dine with them because their are no tables.<br/><br/>Ā Did my eyes deceive me? Was I suffering from an acute case of tabliculitus, where the affected sees empty tables when they are hungry? My Swiss friend, perplexed by the local service most likely, questions the hostess about a table in the corner, "couldn't you just add an extra chair?" this simple observation seemed only to further agitate her. We decided not to press it and left with a bitter and confusing taste in our mouths. Anyway, Kalkbay and Muizenberg are filled with gems. This isn't one of them, DON'T be fooled by the brightly coloured exterior.

Iā€™ve always been a fan of Cape to Cuba, but this one in Kalk Bay is just simply the best!Ā <br/><br/>You truly feel as if youā€™ve been transported to the city of Havana. Itā€™s got an authentic Cuban vibe, with delicious cocktails and laid-back atmosphere to match.<br/><br/>Iā€™ve eaten there before, but I prefer to just do cocktails on the stoepie where you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the ocean (unless a Metro comes crawling past, which is a bonus!).<br/><br/>Definitely one of the best places to enjoy a cocktail or three.
The Jax Blog
This used to be my favourite restaurant in Cape Town. Why? <br/>1. Great views<br/>2. Great food<br/>3. great cocktails<br/>4. Toes in the sand<br/>5. Salsa on the weekends<br/>6. Eclectic decor you can buy<br/>7. Friendly efficient customer service<br/><br/>Despite the views, the decor, cocktails and friendly service the food needs some attention. <br/><br/>Whilst I enjoyed the coconut crumbed hake, calamari and jalapeno poppers, my partner who ordered a burger did not enjoy his meal. As the burger patty was fried in the same oil as my fish as well as the oil bomb fries that accompanied it. šŸ˜ž That was just horrible tasting and a little overpriced for that small burger.<br/><br/>As much as I love your restaurant you gotta keep the quality of your food as great as the reputation of your establishment.<br/><br/>I was a little embarrassed as I had recommended this place as the best place in CT. Then was horribly let down by a less than average burger.<br/><br/>Very ambivalent about returning šŸ˜ž<br/><br/>

What a great experience! Outstanding decor and atmosphere. Food was excellent.... the rest of the review is just to flesh out the requirements for 150 characters šŸ˜‚

Good food, excellent service. Will recommend it to everyone. We had amazing calamari, paella and the yellowtail was equally good! See you guys soon.

I went here for the first time in a long time and was quite dissapointed in the Waitron Max. He immediately anticipating that my partner and I would not spend any money and said, "You only coming for tapas, just go to the bar." Needless to say we sat outside and ordered starter drinks which were quite good. My partner had chocolate cake mojito and I had the regular Long Island Iced tea. We also ordered Cuban bread and oysters which were great. Then the main meals...The crayfish pasta was tasteless. My partner had to add plenty of black pepper and tabasco sauce to get any sort of flavor out of this R220 meal. The Chicken and shrimp curry was missing the shrimp. The meals were both presented well for a 'beach restaurant' besides this however, the chicken and shrimp curry had two broken shrimp and lots of chicken and potatoes. Kudos to Max for bringing 4 additional shrimp after the meal was done. We waited for well over 10min for our bill and ended up making our way to the front desk to pay and found Max in a meeting. Despite the above Cape to Cuba provided a very relaxed setting with many appealing photo opportunities. The relaxed environment was however spoilt by barmen swearing about how sh@tty there day is and how they did not look forward to working.

Poor service, waited very long for drinks and starters. Ended up leaving and eating main course somewhere else. Was so disappointed. Food was also not as expected. We looked forward to this outing for a while, but ended up with crappy service and food. Also you need to update your Zomato page. <br/>

Went to Cape To Cuba with some Friends . Was quite disappointed .Felt like i was visiting my Gran when i walked in . Had a weird smell inside . The bar outside with the sand is pretty cool where we ended the evening . The food , deep fried and more deep fried starters . so for the main i ordered a burger . Really nothing to write home about i couldve bought the same quality burger outside a pick n pay on a Saturday Morning .

Loved the decor of this quirky little spot! Bloody Mary was great, as was the service. The food slightly above average, we ordered a variety from the bars tapas menu. Will definitely go back for afternoon drinks.
Jenny Louw
The only food I've ever had here are the chilli poppers and they're pretty good. What I come here for is to have a delicious cocktail in this beautiful spot. I absolutely love the decor and the atmosphere is fun. <br/>Come for a great view and a cocktail.
Chantelle Lamusse
I had my birthday get together here. It's beautifully right on the beach literally with sand inside...<br/>So it's a toes in the sand bar. The cocktails were good, the view amazing. I really enjoyed it. We were luckily enough to get seats at the window looking out towards the Kalk Bay Harbour

Interesting Cuban shabby-chic style of establishment. Different, offering a casual, fun atmosphere. Pop in here for a drink or a meal. The service can be volatile and edgy at times, their fish is straight from the sea and tasty!! Possibly a bit overpriced but worth the experiencešŸ‘ŒšŸ˜Ž
Monique
Service is really very poor. Ordered a plate of chips and chicken wings from the "tapas" menu in the bar area. It took 58 minutes to arrive. Chicken wings were below average, had soft puckered skin and sauce was not great. Only one waiter in the bar area, probably the reason for such slow service.
Danny Calitz
Great place... Had the tappas and it was very pleasant!!! You guys will see me again!! For sure. The setting is great as well. And the, well its next
Aqeelah Hassim
This place is a serious catch 22. The restaurant section is nothing to write home about. The manager is pretty rude and not accommodating and the food I've had there recently isn't greatšŸ™ˆ However the separate bar area is incredible! I love the chilled vibe and they easily make some of the best cocktails in CT! The bartenders are friendly and so passionate about their art. Perfect place to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon šŸø

I used to love this gem of a place. But service has always been slow. This last time was so bad that after 30 minutes they still had not brought the water for the table, and when the chichen soup finally arrived, it was a very thick (coconut) cream - like a sauce more than a soup. The waiter was quite aggressive and I am not sure I will take international visitors there again unfortunately. What a pity- perfect position and decor.
Raph Jeftha
Pechuga was disappointing, basically one grilled chicken fillet with a normal garden salad. Potato rosti's were average and small. Nothing special and not worth R135.00.

We were in Kalk Bay and decided to give Cape to Cuba a shot. <br/><br/>It was a beautiful day so we sat outside at the tables by the entrance, 10 minutes later we find out we're only allowed to order pizza's and a few cocktails off a specific menu... For real? But OK, it's their policy. <br/><br/>We got a table inside with a gorgeous view just a few meters away from the ocean. I was impressed by the decor, schizophrenic but it all came together nicely. <br/><br/>We both ordered the paella, it had the works! Prawns, mussels, fish, chicken, calamari, chorizo and few other ingredients. For the most part, it was tasty. The chicken and calamari didn't come through so nicely, and if I recall correctly it came with just one prawn and two mussels. I think the meal was over priced based on the size of the portion. On paper the meal sounded like winner. <br/><br/>Service was average. Check out took a little longer than usual.

I remember now why I didn't like going to Cape to Cuba. Firstly you cannot order 1 drink and pay for it by card, it has to be a minimum of R50 on your card which is ridiculous. Secondly the waiter brought us a food menu, we were sitting outside, I wanted to order one of the tapas on the menu -Sticky spare ribs only to be told I am not allowed to order it, it can only be ordered if you're sitting inside the restaurant (5m away). So so disappointed and will be sure not to return again. Sorry team Cuba but it's not the first time you disappoint. (Maybe think, that before you have a minimum charge on your cards, how far your guests travel to SPEND money at your restaurant). Perhaps service isn't what you're all about, but surely a bit of attention is required.
Rachael Laura Wahl
Food was not so great. My whole dinner table was disappointed. Not well presented or tasty at all. Over priced for the quality. Sorry. Not too impressed.
Nicole Stacey
I've heard good things about the place so I decides to give it a try. I was disappointed to say the least, especially after hearing the so much good things. The service was slow and staff wasn't that friendly.
Loyiso Tando Balfour
Drove all the way from Cape Town to have dinner at cape to Cuba as my girlfriend is Cuban. The place looks amazing with creative decorations and a good vibe to it but that's all its got going for it. We had the chicken and lime soup, which we only had three spoons of because it tasted like coleslaw and boiled eggs. The paella was dry and tasted like frozen checkers paella, not even the seafood in it was fresh. Extremely disappointed especially taking into the account the review and the prices.
ML Korb
I think the best part of this place has to be the decor! Loved it! We had the jalapeƱo poppers and they did not disappoint! Had some lovely cocktails...would have liked a cocktail with a bit more taste but nevertheless we had a great time!
Fawn Rogers
I LOVED Cape To Cuba. I have to first state that I did NOT eat here, I merely stopped in for a cocktail. The cocktail menu was great and the barmen were fantastic at making recommendations. The best part of this place is of course the decor - Amazing!
Marcia Relling
I visited Cape to Cuba for some drinks with friends and we all had a great time! We all had Mojito's - which were a bit pricey considering the size (tumbler). However, the entertaining bartenders and exceptional presentation made it worth it. You can expect tango dancers, sandy floors, beautiful decor, live music and breathtaking views of the harbour. The ambiance is stunning and makes for a completely different and unique experience.
Ronalda Blackbeard
Previously we had many great evenings at Cape to Cuba but unfortunately the latest visit was disappointing to say the least. We promised our overseas guests a special treat but were embarrassed. The food was very mediocre and not made to order and totally overpriced. Our waitress Yvonne tried her best to compensate but the service was the only positive aspect of the evening. We will probably not return to this restaurant in the near future.
Carl Fourie
While excited for the evening I founded the burger to be boring and lacking in speciality for the price. Worse was the service... Waited over 1hr for food with no update on progress. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT FOR FOOD... Maybe a drink but that's it :( Sid Zulu
Kayla
Such a lovely warm place. The staff is very kind and helpful. Very great atmosphere. Very relaxing place. The food is amazing and well prepared. Definitely a place for a date, for a family event or a date.
Lauren Arendse
Go for drinks.Their cocktails are great. Their bar is fully stocked with the usuals. The Cuban bread - delicious. The vibe and location are fun and welcoming.<br/>Everything else very average. Quite disappointed in the quality of the main meals.
Danielle Dornonville-de La Cour
Great drinks and good price. Food is an absolute rip off. Pay high prices only to be mislead with an average burger. Could have made a better one at home.
Angela Nunes
Best oysters we had in Cape Town, tapas were awesome, cocktails were good, portions were huge so unfortunately we didn't get to try dessert. The decor is authentic Cuban style and the graffiti train that travels passed the resturant just lends itself to the authenticity of the resturant.
Anandie
Every time I am in Cape Town, I make this a definite visit. Cape To Cuba has the best atmosphere, and if you can get a seat outside, you can get ready to stay all afternoon. <br/><br/>Fun waitstaff, dressed in Cuban outfits ensures great service. <br/><br/>The food is always fantastic. the Calamari is a winner with everyone, but as are all the items on the menu really. <br/><br/>Cocktails and Jars are amazing. <br/><br/>It is really a wonderful afternoon or evening out you wont regret.
Nicola Kotze
Was really disappointed on New Year's Eve (2015) when my boyfriend and I went there for drinks. He had never been there before and I wanted it to be a good experience. I ordered the margarita and he ordered the mojito. Both were really underwhelming especially for the size. The margarita was so salty I swear they took water from the ocean and just put a lemon and ice in it. The mojito was also a bit salty and he couldn't even taste the lime! The service was also very slow, and the staff weren't very welcoming or helpful. I can't see myself going back in a hurry.

Having been to this restaurant for the first time last year winter with a bunch of my friends from overseas we had a great time food was decent , cocktails were very good and smiles all around from the staff it wasn't a very busy day.<br/><br/>I visited cape to Cuba again the day before New Years , 30/12/15. Hoping to get the same happy vibe and good food, I got the complete opposite, we arrived for supper and tried our luck asked for a table. I could see the restaurant was already pretty full due to the time of year, we were seated outside next to the railway and cramped up with other diners, basically back to back. <br/>We ordered the beef kabab which was ok, seafood paella which tasted like rice steamed with chicken stock dry and 4 cooked prawns stacked on top, sad.<br/><br/>Hosin bbq ribs which was very good so we order seconds then turn bad they cut up the ribs so it would cook faster hence it was hard and chewy.<br/> The mussels starter looked like it was microwaved it actually looked like the food the chief offered on a piece of leaf to doctor jones in the temple of doom.<br/><br/>Sitting next to the railway it was very noisy as the trains passes by, so when a table opened up inside I requested our waiter who was a friendly chap checked and said we could move inside. Getting there the manager decided to intervene well a guy with a loose shirt tanned, looked like a bouncer. Wasn't too friendly gave me a look like he wants to punch me in the face. A table cleared behind us I asked the same bouncer guy if we could move and sit there he said yes and then didn't bother assisting us any further, maybe in his head all he thought of us was we were a bunch of tourists who didn't follow restaurant rules. Anyways when it gets busy don't bother visiting this place oh why I left the mussels for last if because I got food poisoning from it, <br/>Ironic mussels from joburg are fresher then this place. Spent the last day of the year sick as a dog.<br/><br/>Never going back !
Jess Douglas
We went for drinks & dinner....<br/><br/>Firstly we go seated at this table next to a dustbin & the service station for the waiters we asked to move which we did....<br/><br/>The Waiter couldn't answer simply questions like what grams the meat was etc & didn't bother finding out for us...<br/> <br/>The calamari came is was slimy & blueish in colour.....we sent this back completely inedible!<br/><br/>The curry was below average as well as the skewer....the burger was burnt & chips extremely oily...<br/><br/>The food was bad bad bad!!!!!I will never be back here again & I don't think anyone deserves that disgusting food...don't go there<br/><br/><br/>
Dylan Coleman
They aren't lying when they boast about their mojitos. Unfortunately the quality is uneven; fantastic blue cheese and chicken burger, but muscles and calamari that were only good and not great and some of the food was cold. The same goes for a terrible martini. For the price I'd expect better but it's definitely a unique experience and the bohemian decor makes for quite the spot.
Claudia Penny
I haven't eaten much at Cape to Cuba but can definitely recommend the cocktails, chili poppers and the Cuban flat bread. Prices are a bit on the higher side, especially for drinks, but the atmosphere kinda makes up for it. Bar service is slow at times.
Katya Krat
Unique spot for drinks. Rad decor. Large variety of seating options at the bar. Bar service not the fastest or best. Nonetheless good spot for cocktails and nachos āœ”ļø
Caylin Ackerman Trollope
Had the Chili Poppers which were divine, however my mains were terrible had the prawns with rice and the prawns were very very overlooked and dry and hardly any sauce so rice was just as dry. Service was very slow and not great at all and then you forced to tip 10% regardless of service.
Kelsey Brown
Was very excited to go back to cape to Cuba as my previous experience was really great but was rather disappointed concerning the high prices and tiny portions. The chilli poppers were dismal they were so small and it was 18 for one of them. Mussels were average and cocktails small and not great either. I will happily pay those prices if the food was really tasty and the portion sizes were bigger but will definitely not be going back.
Food Guru Snapper
Great spot with a choice of a outdoor or a indoor vibe. Whenever I walk into Cape to Cuba I am always greeted by friendly staff. The vibe is chilled with beach sand and huts outside. Indoors they offer live music on some days with a great views of the harbor and trains riding by. They also have a restaurant that cooks up delicious food. My personal favorite is their prawns, although some items on the menu are overpriced with small portions especially the ribs.
Trevor Pols
We felt like a little something different with poppers and cocktails and decided on this spot. On arrival we were very surprised to find that there were no waitrons to take our orders, after 10min I went to the bar where the manager informed me that all orders were to be placed there and that there was nobody to assist us outside. This surprised me as the table beside us had a lady assisting them. Never the less we were there and were hungry so we ordered some cocktails, oysters and poppers. The oysters although pricey were fresh and yummy and the the poppers were accompanied by a BBQ sweet chili sauce that was different but really tasty. Cocktails were great! After a few we asked for a table inside were we could get some proper service (instead of bar service) and were given a great seating inside were the decor is...well I'm not even sure how to describe it so just look at Lethe pic and leave your description in the comment section. I ordered the jalapeƱo cheese burger (divine) and Carly ordered the chicken curry. The basting on the parties was amazing and the jalapeƱo cheese burger gets a solid 8/10 with the chicken curry getting an average 5/10. Unfortunately the deserts were not as good, and both of them get a below average of 4/10. I would however definitely go back just for that burger.
Laura Stevens
My memory outweighed the actual. Food was satisfactory as was service nothing extraordinary. One waiter had a bit of a attitude but overall our waitress was very accommodating.
Nicholas Hochfelden
Amazing food! Amazing atmosphere and great drinks. One of my favorite places for a meal with friends or a leisurely drinking session. Not too pricey and good parking -available
Princess Petra
Yummy cocktails with your feet in the sand and trains speeding by. The self service bar and the outside area have a super chilled seating area and the vibe is great. The restaurant decor is just mind boggling, I couldn't stop looking around. The owners are around the restaurant the whole time and together with the staff they make you feeling really welcome. The service is good but the food was a little disappointing. I ate tapas (as the sign on the way in suggests tapas and mojitos) the sauce the mussels are in had far too much Dill for me but the corn fritters were super tasty and the accompanying sauce was delicious. I would definitely stop by again for more cocktails and to taste some more food off the menu.

Early supper in Kalk Bay brought us to Cape to Cuba. I enjoy themed restaurants if they are done well, and this is. I really like that they have a 'designated driver' cocktail section as it means there is no mix up if asking for a virgin. I had the hibiscus berry cooler and it was delicious. We decided to share a few tapas and ordered 2 cuban breads, chilli poppers, and sticky pork ribs. The Cuban breads were apparently bigger than usual but we did not mind! So yum, especially with the sauce given on the side. The chilli poppers are always very tasty here. The sticky pork ribs were tender and lovely, and the sauce was so good we hardly needed the finger bowl! Very good evening and good service. Will be back for sure.
Vernon Wilson
Great place to chill and have drinks and a Delicious meal. Unique in its own way with a view of the False Bay ocean and Kalk Bay harbour. If you prefer being away from the hustle and bustle then Kalk Bay is the perfect place. There are other great restaurants in the area but on top of my list would be Cape To Cuba.
Rowelna Venter
Nice music and really good to hangout, the decor is very interesting. The poppers and snacks were not the best I have had and the drinks were okay.
Enya Pier De Jongh
Always been a truly mystical place but I feel the ambience and quality has definitely downgraded immensely, still a true Lover but I miss the way it always was, perfecto
Mieke
I love this place. Been there in summer and winter, cocktails are amazing. I had the caiprinha cocktails which was good. Love the vibe and the sand all over, place has a great atmosphere
Kenan Germaner
Awesome spot! Whether you want to eat or just have a few drinks. Very chilled vibe, nice accommodating service, prices are reasonable and portions are good. Live music on while I visited and it was great too. Decor is trendy and sets the ambiance. Food was delicious. Would definitely come back.
Geraldean Howes
Yes it is funky but the service and the attitude of the staff needs much to be desired. It needs a bit of a clean up. Very dissapointed as I had really loved the place on my first visit!
Morne Visser
One of my favourite restaurants to visit in the Cape!! I'd often take the train from Cape Town (free on weekends), or take a lazy drive via Chapman's Peak. <br/><br/>This eclectic Cuban restaurant is lifted on the moan road in Kalk Bay, next to the railway. Enjoy the rattling as the train crawls by! The decor is an exotic mix of eclectic and semi-blasphemous Cuban and Catholic statues. Literally one hundred chandeliers hang lazily from the cwiling (ok not literally, I've never counted). Enjoy different themes across different sections of the restaurant, all overlooking the beautiful Bay.<br/><br/>The food is excellent! Truly Cuban - enjoy selxuous Cuban buns, jalapeno poppers, and other tapas for starters. My favourite meal is the calamari! Oh and one thing Cubans do exceptinally - Mojitos! A must try! Although all their cocktails are delicious!
Sophie Mamet
What a place!!!<br/>When there a couple of time for drinks! <br/>It is such a lovely place with a great service! <br/>The life music is so nice with a nice cocktail and some calamari!
MelbourneLops
You can't really go all the way to Kalk Bay without popping into Cape to Cuba for a cheeky drink.... it's a great little spot with lots of vibe. Can't comment on the food because we haven't eaten here yet but the cocktails are good! A little pricey but the atmosphere makes up for it. I love the "beach bar" feel to it.
Shivani Garg
Good food, tried Hake and Beef Burger. Great ambience. Wasn't impressed by the service. <br/>Tried the chocolate mojito, didn't like it! <br/>Giving it a 4 solely for food and ambience. It also has a bar outside and I just loved the way they have put sand on the floor, it gives it such a rustic yet be achy look.
Michael Lotter
Kalkbay is just one of my favorite places in the morning. Me and the kids had to stop at Cape to Cuba. It's been probably 10 years since I last visited the place. Decor is still amazing and the food really good. My daughter had a cheese burger and my son and I the Cape Calamari. All very good!
Jani Schnehage
I live this place because you can take the train. Mexican food and cocktails in the sand! Need I say more? That's ultimately where I could spend the rest of my life.
Robert Peitzsch
Every time my brother comes to visit he wants to visit Cape to Cuba. Honestly, I don't see what he is so crazy about. I find the food to be overpriced, often cold and not that good. I also don't see the point of ordering a cocktail from a restaurant and it tastes like Mainstay box cocktail which you take to a festival.
Kate Coulson
Good Lord this place is a gem. Tucked between the railway and the main road of Kalk Bay, Cape to Cuba is a relaxed bar/restaurant with delicious food and cocktails. I like to sit on the cosy front porch (with a caipirinha of course), overlooking the railroad and the beach. The music and atmosphere is authentic, the staff are friendly and the calamari is to die for. It's a great spot for events as well, with an awesome beach bar outside and good live music (on Saturdays).
Lee-Anne Jacobs
A venue that rarely fails to please. <br/>Cocktails are addictive - perfect for a Saturday afternoon . <br/>Love the Sticky Ribs and in general their starter menu has a great selection of nibbles.<br/>
Chloe Ball
Honestly mm favourite restaurant I've ever been to. Sitting sipping on cocktails, smoking a cigar, watching the harbour and a train rushes past. Beautiful cocktails and the tapas were to die for!!
YouAteThat
The service was really, really, really, REALLY bad. We waited over 40 min for one dish. Waiter forgot drinks, cutlery etc. The tapas were also way overpriced. The grilled sardine was by far the best dish but at 50 bucks for one tiny sardine I should bloody think so. We had 3 for R60 at Mykonos Taverns and they were really good ? Chilli poppers were soggy with hardly any cheese. Not great hygiene either. We sat next to the kitchen and the staff were touching eeeeeverything.... dishing up salad with their FINGERS! No gloves no hairnets. Come on its a restaurant surely you have some utensils! Pity since it's a fantastic location with wonderful decor and really friendly staff. But to wait 30 min for your order to be taken, another 40 for your meal and then have 80% of the food be average at best? Nah. We'll stick to self service beer from now on.
Vic Lass
One of our favourites. Getting married there in two weeks time..............................................................................
Jonathan Vandayar
Wasn't too blown away way by the mains as you could get this done better in Cape town (I had the calamari) but the tapas, service and ambiance.... well that's what will keep me coming back to this place. Excellent service friendly staff, best tapas in town and as for the ambiance... Its on the beach - enough said!!! It's not only about the food its about the total package..... And they not only strive to impress they succeed...
Ash Pash
I dig this place. Pity I live so far away. Such a chill vibe, barefoot in the sand, beer in hand and some sunshine vibes. Too awesome. Worth the drive
Janine De Grill
Quirky and eccentric decor, love the sand between my toes as we walk into the restaurant, more peckish than hungry<br/>We decided to have the starters sticky ribs, calamari tubes, grilled sardines and chilli poppers. Quite enough for two on date night. The chilli poppers are outstanding. Ordered two more portions, probably the best in the area. Will definitely be back.
Mel Engelbrecht Tutt Klos
My mostest fav restaurant in Cape Town. You can go just for the decor and vibe. But the food is awesome, the drinks to die for and the owners my type of no-nonsense people. To top it they are pet friendly! You have not experienced CT till you've been to C2C
Amaryllis
The venue is interesting and unique and the food is very good. The service is not on par with the rest of the experience however and could be improved.
Deon Louw
Update:<br/>Went for dinner last night and unfortunately we were left feeling like the forgotten love child of a loveless relationship. While the food and cocktails were as good as ever (and the best spare ribs I've ever had) the service left much to be desired. When we arrived, our booked table was not ready and we had to stand around while this was sorted out. Next a waiter said someone else will be helping us, but he has come to take the drinks order. Our actual waitress never showed her face. Our "temporary waiter" then brought our drinks a good 25 minutes later and finally took our food order. The food took so long to arrive we were worried they had forgotten about us. When it finally arrived there was a tapa missing, not that we could alert our waiter as he never made an appearance until we asked for the bill, after which we also had to go find a card machine to pay for the meal. Honestly a huge let down<br/><br/>Had a great lunch a few days ago at this hidden between the busy Kalk Bay main road and the train tracks. From the outside this looks like any other beach front restaurant, but upon entering you are transported to a world of intrigue, original decor, Cuban cigars and Havana rum. <br/><br/>The cocktails on offer all add to the experience, from classic Mojitos (which are an absolute must) to the Cuba Libre, each cocktail offers its own distinct flavours. <br/><br/>The food is everything you expect it to be. interesting, full of flavour and filling. The best option is to share as many dishes as possible, and don't skip the starters. <br/><br/>Over all the experience is something special, each element playing its part to create an unforgettable Cuban love story, and one that needs to revisited often.
Simonesmit
What an amazing experience! Fantastic tapas and cocktails. Interesting decor and a lively, welcoming ambiance. Very friendly service, will definitely be back!
Carla15
Amazing cocktails and starters. Vegetarian and dog friendly. Interesting and different decor with a lovely view of the harbour. A definite favourite. Maxy our waiter was also very friendly.

We never got to taste the food last Friday night as we were unceremoniously ushered out of the restaurant by the manageress after being led to a table by a waiter. We were trying our luck a bit by turning up without a booking, and asked the waiter at the door whether they could fit us in, which he said they could (just my wife and I, so not a huge group). The waiter grabbed two menus and asked us to follow him, we only got a few paces when a woman appeared, almost out of nowhere, asking us whether we had made a booking and after finding out that we hadn't, shook her head and barked "No!". I don't know whether it was the look of horror on our faces that prompted a belated and somewhat forced "sorry" out of her, but I was certainly stunned into silence and could almost feel the embarrassment of the waiter from where he stood. Without a further word from her, all we could do was turn around and sheepishly leave like dismissed school children. We have been to Cape to Cuba before, only twice over many years (we live in the area), and I have always been underwhelmed with the food, and frankly disturbed at the attitude of much of the staff (especially at the bar) who seem to think they grace us with their mere presence, let alone deign to serve us. My experience of the owner (and I assume the woman to whom I am referring in this article is the owner and not just a manager) has been anecdotal and not very flattering. I had also read a very scathing article about her where patrons had actually been kicked out and told not to come back for not tipping enough. In short, her reputation had preceded her. This still did not prepare me enough for when we had to finally encounter her face to face. We should have known better to go back in the first place. We eat out a great deal in the southern peninsular and also further afield, and this has once again reinforced my opinion of the restaurant. They rely on their location, gullible tourists, and twenty-something (and perhaps younger) patrons that go there only to drink. We will never, but never, go there again. I promise.
Andrea Lauren Kraak
My favourite place to be in summer, especially in the evening. Good vibe, good food and awesome drinks. The voodoo is a must have ! Haven't tried the food yet though
Christian
Really nice setting with ocean views and interesting decor. Friendly staff.<br/><br/>Food is good and chef is willing to accommodate special requests.<br/><br/>Perfect setting for a lazy day.
Aasia Fredericks
No where better to eat on a warm summers afternoon, the food was great and the service was average and they dont have many halal friendly options but what I did have tasted pretty good.

Cape to Cuba - Kalk Bay<br/>It is what it is. You either love it, or you just not having a good day.<br/><br/>One of the few venues in the South thats been there, for what seems an eternity. Been a regular visitor to Cape to Cuba for the last few years and today was yet another of those visits. An impromptu arranged birthday celebration / sundowner. Thanks to the unpredictable Cape Town weather. Arrived just as the legends started up to entertain us throughout the afternoon and into the evening.Live music Sundays 4pm-7pm.<br/>It's seen many a transformation over the year.Bars have moved around, tables added, chair removed, walls broken down and rebuilt, entrances added, waiters come and gone and the list goes on and on.However the spirit of Havana and the images and sounds of Cuba and the revolution still lingers on.<br/>Not many venues can boast the spectacular view of Kalk Bay harbour (and share the beach area come New Years Eve) that this venue has. With metro trains whistling past the windows coming into the Kalk Bay station on a regular basis.<br/>A walk around the dinning area, is in itself an experience to behold. A photographers paradise.Forget the menu, just take along the Canon / Nikon, the food will long be forgotten, whereas the amazing decor and photographs will long be remembered.PS Not a reflection on the food, just that the decor is absolutely stunning.<br/>Happy hour (cocktails at half price) always seems to lighten my mood and indeed my wallet. As per the the lyrics of the Billy Joel song Piano Man, 'the regular crowd shuffle in'. Ok it was not a Saturday night, nor was it nine o clock, but the placed filled out and was getting ready for an evening of good old South style Cuban festivities.<br/>Thanks to some soul searching music and an group of special friends (including a friend called Mojito) another afternoon / evening well spent at the Cuba.<br/>Relax outside with your feet buried in the sand (summer) or chill by the fireplace (winter) and enjoy you cocktails, Havana style.<br/>In Summary, Cape to Cuba is, what it is.Love it or leave it. In my case I prefer the first option.<br/><br/>Thanks Bart & All the rest of You<br/>Mr.G - Marcus Gibbons

This colorful, lively and bustling Havana-themed restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Situated right by the ocean and next to the railway, great to enjoy their wide variety of classic cocktails. Different chandeliers hanging from the roof and Cuban references to Ernest Hemingway and Che Guerva are but a few things contributing to the vibey decor of this awesome place. Live music and specials such as half price cocktails everyday of the week (5-7pm) make it a great place to go to on a summers day either with a group of close friends or someone special.

Food was great, service was shockingly bad. Our friends received their food after we finished. <br/><br/>Complaining to the owner led to her using the f&ck word more the twice in a sentence. It's worth visiting for the experience once only. Thereafter avoid for life!<br/>
