Review Ice Cafe - Kalk Bay

Kira
The service here is nice and the price is low (19.5 rand for a basic scoop), but the chocolate ice cream was not very flavorful at all. I imagine it might be a better choice to pick something fruit flavored. Overall, still a nice and not too expensive treat on a hot day.

A legendary place to stop for an ice cream if you're in the area. Great quality ice cream for a reasonable price. We stop here on every visit to Kalk Bay or on the way to Simon's Town. Keep up the great service!

Easily the best ice cream around. If you're on a tight budget and willing to share a selection with your family once you find a spot to watch the waves a little ways down the road, get the family box. Any 6 (generous) scoops for just R85.

Don’t you just love it when you find a small spot with friendly & helpful staff and then find out the product is absolutely World Class! We tried three different flavours (apparently they change often). We had liquorice, blueberry cheesecake and Belgian chocolate. It was the perfect consistency, it was not ridiculously sweet, the flavours were genuine with no synthetic flavours and weird aftertaste when we were done. Guess we will be going back to try more flavours! Go see for yourself – properly made, and served with a smile.

Drove all the way from home just to get here. We got here just as they were closing and they kindly stayed open to serve us. They were still filled with energy at the end if their day and gave me and my girlfriend a pleasant experience. Was 100% worth it. Best customer service I experienced in a long time. I recommend getting the amazing strawberries and cream flavour, 10/10. And an 11/10 experience.

Today's ice cream taste wasn't the norm, less cream and flavour, no bits of flavour swirled in between, I don't know what to make of it. The last few times I came here it was like nothing I have ever tasted before, amazing ice cream, it used to be my favourite little place, like a hidden gem, now it's just hidden flavour. I usually order pistachio and hazelnut, or mango, not impressed today. A wasted trip. You guys used to rock, what's happening. I know you can do it again.. I will be going back as the owners were kind enough to respond. Thank you ice Cafe

They have a very good selection of ice cream flavours and even some for vegans. Whether you want something classic or somewhat different i.e. marmalade flavour they have it. Decently priced too.

Really good local ice cream at an affordable price, definitely loved it

love the variety and speedy service. the benches outside are a great advert. Many tourist kids can't resist tugging at their parents when they see people on the bench serving long licks on their ice cream 😁

Great selection of ice creams and cones - a must stop off in Kalkbay during the summer and even winter months 👍bright and beach inside 🌞
Claudia Meek
Delicious and creamy! I can recommend the pistachio and halva flavours- in a sugar cone. So yummy!

Amazing tasting ice cream. Have to buy at least 3 tubs because i can't settle on just 1..

Have you ever tasted real homemade ice-cream? You know ...the stuff that melts in your mouth because it's so creamy 😋? That's what you can expect from the Ice Cafe, together with a variety of flavours both in sorbet and creamy ice-cream ranges. Pick one scoop mix and match them, it's presented in sugar cone, classic cone or paper cup options. You'll be back for more...

Delicious ice cream, best location. Take your ice cream and wonder around beautiful Kalk Bay.

Small, friendly, lots of flavours and value for money A tiny little ice cream shop in Kalk Bay. They offer around 10-15 different flavours of homemade ice cream and sorbet, which are all consistently good. The prices are actually very reasonable and it makes for a great treat to have walking along the main road. (Shops nearby seem less fanatical about ice cream in their premises though)

The queue moves quickly, the staff works well to serve the customers but there is not a lot of space in the store. There could be more seating provided and there should be an option to do toppings on the ice-cream. However, the flavours are great and diverse.

Delicious ice cream for an affordable price. I recommend the Turkish delight ice cream if you like that as a flavour, it's so good and has little chocolate chips in it! R24.50 for a scoop or can do a half half of 2 different flavours. There are so many different flavours to choose from it's a fantastic stop off if you're in Kalk Bay.

The yummiest ice-cream I've had in a long time! Creamy and delicious, with huge servings! Very well priced. Advertised as cash only but there is Zapper and a Yoko device (for card transactions over R50). Well worth the trip!!!

This is a cute little ice cream shop on the main road in Kalk Bay, a perfect stop for us after exploring some of the interesting shops. We enjoyed tasting the ice cream before choosing our flavour. We had Turkish delight, pina colada, the famous Belgian chocolate, choc mint and pistachio. I had the pistachio and I didn't taste this before ordering, and I was quite disappointed in the mild flavour. My husband had the pina colada, and that was absolutely yum. The Turkish delight was also delightful. Belgian chocolate and choc mint was very good, but very ordinary. You can sit down in the little shop, there's about 6 chairs and a counter looking out over the street, and outside they have a bench. Really more a takeaway ice cream place. Take your ice cream and wander through all the little quaint shops whilst dreamily licking away.

This is such a popular outlet in Kalk Bay. I think its the only ice cream parlour hence the reason for its popularity. The ice cream is average. The Mango yoghurt ice cream is too sweet and the black forest ice cream tastes like Demazin medicine and the ice cream is really not that creamy. The cones are really nice and I see they have vegan options.

Had some lovely Gelato after a glorious walk along Kalk Bay Beach today. I had the strawberry flavor, which was divine. Husband had an orange scoop, and baby girl had strawberry scoop topped with a lemon scoop. Yum. Delicious!

Scorching hot! Swarming with tourists. Yip, silly me decided to ‘day trip’ to kalk bay on a public holiday. This place was my safe haven, my retreat... to soothe the heat and crowds away.

Super friendly store assistants that allow you to try the various flavours before purchasing. I opted for the ginger flavoured ice cream on a waffle cone. Yum! It was like a cold ginger snap cookie, root beer on a cone, Xmas in my mouth!

Out I trotted with my cone in hand and somehow forgot about the crowds on the street...

Their ice creams of absolutely delicious. I had a blueberry cheesecake and Belgian chocolate scoops on a sugar cone. You can only pay with a card if your order exceeds R50. They also encourage the recycling of the wooden spoons. It’s a great little spot.

We stopped here for some desert and a stroll along the harbour today because we had a wonderful summers day smack bang in the middle of winter (thanks global warming).

I had the Belgian Chocolate and the Fudge and Flake. The chocolate was absolutely yum, creamy and all sorts of chocolate-y goodness. The fudge left a big hole in my heart because it tasted like coffee (which I don't drink btw), I expected way more because I loved the chocolate scoop so much.

My mom had the Turkish Delight as well as a Pistachio scoop which were both let downs because they were so sweet.

I'm an ice cream lover and will give them another go because the chocolate ice cream was just that good. Also, big ups to the small businesses doing their thing! I love supporting you guys!

P.S. don't forget to tip the staff! They're all saving to travel, so your extra change goes a long way

One of my favourite ice cream spots in Cape Town. Cheaper than most gelato places and worthy of drive to Kalk bay on a Sunday afternoon. The mint and chocolate combo has to be the most popular. If two scoops are too much of a sugar rush opt for half/half option. The smiling faces and the patience of those behind the counter always impresses me.

See photos for - Sugar cone with coffee and licorice (note: if you love licorice, this is the scoop to try) & Tub with Belgian chocolate and pistachio, with the chocolate being the clear winner.
Small corner shop located across from the Kalk Bay station serving a large assortment of gelatos and sorbets!

This was the only spot we could find serving ice cream in Kalk Bay. The ice creams have that artificial colour and taste to them.

We tried the strawberry (best out of the lot), mint chocolate and raspberry (not so great). Price was good since you pay R29.50 for three scoops.

The server was quite ditzy, don't think her brain could comprehend a mixed race couple being together so when I asked for a taste of a scoop before she put it in my fiancés cup she scooped it then gave me a taste which by then was pointless.

Would have preferred eating an ice cream cone from a KFC if I could find one. Overall too artificial tasting for me to like them.

After spending the day at Dalebrook, we decided to take a walk along the Main road and made an impromptu stop at The ice Cafe. I opted for the Granadilla Sorbet in a sugar cone and my friend chose the coffee gelato. It was super refreshing and the value for money is great!

My FAVORITE place to get ice cream. So many different flavours to choose from and all of them are so yummy.
I had the mango sorbet and lemon sorbet. My fiancé had the passion fruit yoghurt and mango sorbet.
The price is so reasonable.
Only reason for not getting a 5 would be that the venue could look more modern.
Always a place I visit when I am that side.

Great ice cream! What more could you want on a hot day, while walking around window shopping. I had a the belgian chocolate and the coffee mixed, absolutely delicious. I'm pretty sure all thier flavours are good as there is a constant flow of people.

Wow. The ice cream was absolutely delicious!

I had the Strawberry Cream and Belgian Chocolate and my friend had the latter and Pistachio. All three were super tasty and delicious.

I think the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is the fact that the service could have been friendlier, and I think they should make the "no card machine" sign bigger.

Other than that I can highly recommend this cute ice cream parlour!

(I thoroughly regret not taking a picture of my beautiful ice cream, so I will be back soon to rectify that mistake!)

This is a great place to get ice cream in Kalk Bay, with a nice array of flavours. The only downside is that they don't have card machines so you may have to go to an atm.

The actual ice cream is nice. It's not the creamiest but it's great for a warm day in Kalk Bay. They are also well priced per scoop.

If you enjoy running, one of the most gorgeous routes is over Boyes drive, starting from Muizenberg towards Kalk Bay and back along the coast to Muizenberg again. So it was on of those runs that I found myself coming towards Kalk Bay and in need of some sugar to push me through back to Muizenberg.

Stopped off at uber-cool (weak pun I know😄) Ice Cafe for something to cool me down as it was one of those warm, gorgeous Cape Town days. Couldn't decide which flavour ice-cream to choose- too many yummy ones and it didnt help that the friendly server allowed me to taste some.

Eventually opted for the cassata which was lovely and tasted very Christmassy. Sugar cone was nice and fresh. Always enjoy a meal somewhere in Kalk Bay and ending off with a refreshing ice cream. Good value for money, friendly servers and interesting flavours makes the Ice Cafe a must visit.

Back to run....enjoyed the leisurely 6 kays back to Muizenberg. Aaah. ..what is life without balance!

Delicious ice-cream
Generous scoops
Well-priced
Fantastic range of flavours.
Whenever we're in Kalk Bay, the Ice Cafe is a must-visit. It's probably good that I don't live close, this ice -cream is delicious

Dear Ice Cafe,

Cool spot. Cool staff. Cool service.

We opted for the Amarula & Chocolate scoops to share. Next time, we're not sharing.

Sean

Awesome pit stop to grab an ice cream cone in kalk bay. With an awesome array of flavors of ice cream and sorbet you'll be sure to find something you like. However, I tend to find the quality of the ice cream waivers across the different flavors. But, you're able to sample the flavors before you decide. Prices are extremely reasonable and border on the side of cheap when it comes to ice cream! Around R17 for a scoop and R22 for two scoops!

This little gem of an ice cream parkour is situated along main road in Kalk Bay. It's very cute and quaint, and the ice cream is phenomenal! Every time I go to Kalk bay it has become a tradition to stop off and grab a yummy new flavor! Their servings are decent cost is good too!

I would definitely recommend getting one of these and taking a walk along Kalk Bay on a lovely summers day!

One of my all time favourite ice cream parlours. If I'm in kalk bay I always have to check in to see if their cinnamon flavour is on offer. It's my best and I haven't found it anywhere else. The sugar cone is always a good idea. Other favorite flavours are the dark Belgium chocolate and the pistachio.

Staying in Blouberg I often make a mission to Kalk bay to get my fix of this amazing ice cream! cookie dough flavour is my absolute favourite, with big chunks of cookie dough to be found in every bite! but all flavours from strawberry cheesecake to chocolate mint chip are to die for, definitely worth a Sunday drive.

After having a serious craving for ice cream & not wanting to head to Gelato Mania (again) I turned to good old Zomato to find a new place with good reviews. Regardless to say, I was impressed by the reviews that I read on the Ice Cafe & made a serious mission to Kalk Bay to get some ice cream on waffles. When I arrived, the power was off (thanks Eskom). As you can imagine, the power being off in an ice cream shop isn't great. If it were me, I would definitely invest in a generator to atleast keep the ice creams solid. In anyways, they told me that the power would be on shortly. I said "Great, I will come back for waffels & ice cream then!" To which they replied "We don't have waffle batter"...I was very disappointed. Regardless, I said I would go elsewhere for lunch & come back later for ice cream (I went to the Kalk Bay Expresso [you can find my review there too]). When I eventually did come back, I tasted both the strawberry & the coconut ice creams. I opted for one scoop of the coconut which was R17,50. I received a very generous helping & found the texture was really creamy & soft. As far as the taste goes, it was a solid 3/5. Next time I have an ice cream craving I will go to someplace closer to home. The Ice Cafe was not worth the great trek. HOWEVER, decent as a desert if you are in the area.

Most amazing ice cream I have had yet! This is definitely my first choice. Their prices are reasonable, scoops are huge and the quality of the ice cream is incomparable to the run of the mill Gelato Mania.

They change their flavours daily so be sure to come back and try something new.

Possibly the best ice cream in SA, this little ice cream shop has never pretended to be anything it's not. With an assortment of flavours available, there is bound to be something for everyone. My suggestion is try everything!

Quick and friendly service. Delicious ice cream with interesting flavours. Ice cream is extremely well priced. No wonder the place is always full of customers!!

Amazing ice cream, interesting flavours, big scoops and well priced. Love the ice cafe regardless of the weather. A must if you are visiting the Kalk Bay Area.

Best Ice-cream I have ever tasted, can't get enough. And I'm not even a big ice-cream lover...

Recently I had the pleasure of a weekend visit to Kalk Bay, and what outing to the seaside would be complete without an ice-cream? We decided to visit the Ice Cafe, and instead of a trashy seaside softserve ice-cream we got the most amazing Italian Gelato imaginable!
The selection of flavors was incredible- Blueberry Cheese Cake, Amarula Ice Cream, and a whole bunch of others (including sorbets and frozen yogurts). I had the Belgian Chocolate, and was blown away- this was the first time I can say I had a *chocolate* ice-cream, not chocolate *flavored* ice-cream! The vanilla was also worth a mention- made with real vanilla pods, yummy!
The service was great, lots of smiles and patience as we tried a few free samples to help us make up our minds (or just to confuse matters further, cause each taste was so good)
I would say that a visit to Kalk Bay is not complete without stopping by the Ice Cafe and experiencing a proper family run Ice Cream Parlour.

What a great day!! All the students and staff from Cedar House came to Kalk Bay to enjoy various treats from generous restaurants, and even on that cold day they managed to enjoy ice-cream from the Ice Cafe!

A quote from a lady last week. " We woke up this morning, looked out of the window at the snow-capped mountains and decided that this is the best day for the Ice-Cafe's Belgian Chocolate and a hot waffle!

A little girl and her little brother came in for ice-cream on Sunday. "I want Barbie!" (translate to strawberry pink), she said. "well I want shark!" he said. Chocolate?

----- 12 Sep, 2013 -----

Mmmmm, yummy, looks like the Ice-Cafe has had another upgrade!! All sparkling clean with new and delicious flavours and ideas. Ask them about their frequent 'ice-cream munchers' card. The roadworks has finished its roadworks, and Kalk Bay looks great!
