Review Kalky's - Kalk Bay

This place is famous for good reason! Exceptional fish and chips! Their grilled option is gluten-free and worth the extra R15 (in 2023) and 30-minute wait. Portion sizes are generous, and the menu has great value options. The setting is rustic. The service is poor, but I guess something has to give. I will definitely go back. High chairs available. Cash only (but there is an ATM on the premises).

The atmosphere is super authentic and really cool. Loved that the most. Food is brilliant but on par with the majority of fish and chips in the cape to be fair. Definite favourite for fish and chips and a must do if you in the area - nothing is near as authentic.

I always have a portion of snoek and hake here with chips. Their prices are good and portion sizes quite large. The flavours are good, with excellent crisp on the batter. From all the fish and chips shops that I’ve tried in the cape, these are the best chips. Fresh hand cut and consistently good. The fish while tasty is a bit too oily, a contradiction I know, as its oil fried, but still it always ends up a bit too oily when served. Really enjoyable nevertheless. The surroundings are amazing here, a great little town and harbour to explore. My most recent lunch here in September 23. Even a cold stormy morning didn’t stop me. Yet again they served me a really good lunch. The crayfish on special is a bargain and really tasty at the same time.

Kalky’s Platter was delicious. Just the fish and chips you want. Value for money, reasonably priced. If you are in Kalk Bay, definitely try out the spot. NB: Please note they only accept cash, no card payments. There is a ATM inside that you can withdraw from.

The fish is so fresh and onion rings on another level. This is where you can get true sea food.nice and fresh. I did not like the octopus in the oil. But that’s me.

This place is a must when in Kalk Bay. I can't imagine not going to enjoy the fresh fish and chips they have to offer. It is a typical old school fisheries that serves freshly fried fish, great service, and operates with cash only. I love just sitting there and enjoying the view and food and chilled vibes.

Made a stop here after reading lots of raving reviews from other patrons. Service was prompt and no-frills. We ordered snoek & chips & calamari as well as piri piri shrimps. The batter was soggy after a short while, which is why the - 0.5 star. Fish and calamari were really fresh though. Some shrimps (especially the heads) on the other hand don't taste as fresh. Piri piri sauce also wasn't as spicy as we would like it to be. Still a good spot for fish and chips though. Careful of the bird poos if you're sitting outside!

This was a great place to grab some fish and chips!! Super casual which we love. We sat outside under the shade and had a great view of the town, boats, and water. Got our food quickly and it was very reasonablely priced! Cash only but they have an ATM

A beautiful harbor with friendly people. Stunning views with waves crashing alongside the walk of kalkies and watching the seals give us a bit of a show.. at this moment of 24 Sept 2023 here will find some videos gushing over the banks of kalkbay jetty.. there is lucky fish, kalkbay fish and chips called kalkies. A place to enjoy your food and taste most wondeul.

The best way to enjoy Kalkies is to park your car in Muizenberg and take the St. JAMES walk along the coast. Read about the history of these little suburbs along the way. End off your leisurely trip with a meal at Kalkeys. The lemon Achar on the side is the best . Walk over to Olympia bakery for a buttery pigs ear with a coffee. A memory for all the senses to enjoy.

Fantastic fish and chips! Large pieces of battered hake and chips. Fresh and awesome. Kalky's certainly has stood the test of time for decades, offering customers an authentic Cape Town cultural experience. Patrons can enjoy a glass or bottle of wine (beers and ciders too) with their meals. They only accept cash for payments, however they do have an ATM inside the venue for clients who only have cards. Definitely worth visiting. Great experience.

What a wonderful experience dinning out at Kalky's! We didn't just go there once - we returned at least 6 times, on a 10 day holiday. The portion sizes are fantastic - the food quality & taste is out of this world & the service is excellent! Just dont expect much in terms of decor and style...but if you want a true Cape Town experience...then this is definitely the place to go!! It is clean, and the atmosphere is warm and charming. You feel right at home, the minute you walk in! You place your food order at the counter – and once it has been prepared, a waitress brings it to your table. The service is really fast and very efficient! The food comes out on a platter, and you collect your own plates, plastic knives & forks, and serviettes from the front of the restaurant before you eat. There are paper cups for those who drink a cooldrink – and wine glasses, for a lovely selection of local wines. We were mostly served by Gadija – who is an absolute treat!! True Cape Town local character – in her sayings & antics…we loved her conversations and quirky humor! I would highly recommend Kalky’s to any traveler – as it is such an awesome experience…a definite MUST stop when visiting Cape Town!!

Need to get a card machine to make payments. Otherwise for some reason the rice on the platter was the best for me.. oh yes why do we have to pay for small things like a slice of lemon or a take away bix.

I used to love Kalkys ~ been the best local vibe place and josselled between Lucky Fish and Kalkys. Last night marked the 3rd time in 3 weeks that I have taken international guests there and there fish was obviously old and frozen... what a shame. I spoke to the manager on duty and explained that I had had a bad experience in the last 2 weeks... checked if they serve fresh fish ... was assured today's catch. Terrible ... old tough fish complained and he provided no solution. Today I went and asked the locals what is happening and I was informed that Kalkys no longer serves fresh fish but frozen ... so last time I take myself and visitors there.

N besoek aan die Kaap nooit volledig sonder besoek aan Kalkys. Gaan nooit weg met n honger gevoel nie. Die vis is vars en die skyfies n bord vol. Die atmosfeer vrolik. N plek waar reisigers ontmoet.

Great casual atmosphere. Staff are friendly even though they have to deal with so many people on a daily basis. Go there for the great seafood at a reasonable price. Don't go if you in a hurry, or else you will be in for a culture shock. Parking could be a nightmare if not for the very organised car guards. Make sure to have a tip of appreciation ready for them. If u can, Park along the main road and take a leisurely walk to Kalkys and the harbour.

Unsure at first approach but what a fantastic meal. Our waitress was fun and entertaining. Really good fish and chips .....that's the review from my Uncle from the U.K.

I don't eat seafood and don't normally comment on a fish dish but that hake and snoek was absolutely delicious. Will recomend it and will go eat there again when back in Cape Town.
