Review Princesa - Johannesburg

Finally visited HQ Princesca to taste their natas and other savoury delights. They don't dissapoint. Parking is limited as queen Street is busy.

Wow what a pleasant surprise. Loved this restaurant for a lazy lunch with family. Great food!

Tasty, authentic no-frills Portuguese food. I tried the calamari and my friend the schnitzel, both were solid. The best pasteis de nata I've had among a nice assortment of baked goods.

I went there for a business lunch and everyone's food was outstanding. I have been back to the bakery several times. They make the best chocolate cake ever. And the Porrugese custard tarts have to be tasted to be believed. Plus imported cheeses etc. If you ever want to surprse your wife, take hone some Pasteis de nata. You will get brownie points for the rest of rhe week.

Nice natal Portughish milk tart. Wonderful coffee all the time. They have giant turos. Staff Rebbeca is very kind and helpful.

Visited for the 1st time and had the Natas...didn't disappoint, unlike other places the Natas didn't have a smell of egg which so much turns off with every bite. The crust was perfect crisp. Good work.

My favourite Portuguese restaurant/bakery Best of everything, the fresh crispy bread with the amazingly delicious pastel de nata. I mean I can go on and on about this place but it’s the best Portuguese padaria, especially considering the neighbourhood it’s located in. They are doing a great job 👏🏽

Very clean, Covid-19 friendly, good portaguese food, big portions and fast service, highly recommended, also check out their deli!

Stunning food, stunning atmosphere.! Certainly can't beat their Carne Assada (Roast Beef) Prego and their Proper Proper Proper Proper Authentic Pasteis de Nata!

Always get rolls here and have their custard tarts, but had never eaten at this establishment.
My partner and I decided to have a quick brunch...joke was on us nothing was quick about this experience.
I loathe entering a restaurant and the open table I select is still filthy from prior customers. I cannot understand that, you'd think once the dishes are cleared, the table would be cleaned to give the next customer a good start/ impression.

Took 10min for a waitress to come and assist us.
Had a major toasted cheese craving, but was highly disappointed the bread slices were so thick and the cheese and Parma ham were frugal. I guess I expected the traditional idea of toasted cheese thin crispy bread, oozing cheese, ja not the case.
The waitresses I found to be missing or either socializing with one another.
Won't dine here again I'll just stick to my buying rolls and custard tarts and leaving- that never disappoints.
We originally went for a quick brunch on a Saturday. The place was full but we found a lovely spot on the upstairs balcony. However, this also meant we were ignored by the waiters for 15 minutes. We eventually decided to leave, but did get some baked goods at the deli downstairs. The danishes we got were dry and unappetising, the pasteis de nata were however very good.

I must say, this place has pretty good selections of pastries and food on offer. Service is pretty good but of course, the flavours and quality of the good could be improved a tad bit. (Espetada was a bit too tough and the calamari was a bit tasteless). Needles to say, the chicken and the soup was pretty good.

Great food, great vibe, great value
I always consistently have a great meal at this hidden gem in Johannesburg.
The bakery churns out amazing confectionary too

Overall, I was very impressed with this restaurant. The waitress was really friendly, we received our food in good time and it was delicious. The chorizo starter portion was very tasty. My brother had the chicken schnitzel and he said the chicken was fresh and delicious. The chicken prego roll is one of the best that I have ever had. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone that loves Portuguese food.

Was there twice in two weeks and the service has gone down. The first time, I told a lady worker that there is a fly flying in the display where the delis are, she didn't even try to get it out and carried on giggling with her co workers inside the kitchen whilst she walked in and out. In fact I even told her twice....when she came out second time. The second experience was that there is a lackage of service.

My favourite Portuguese pastry place! There is the most amazing range of delicious pastries and cakes to suit every taste bud.
If you're sitting down to eat, like many of the Portuguese locals, don't expect snappy service - it's laid back at best, and painfully slow at worst. The food is fabulous, with great prego rolls and value for money breakfasts.
Definitely worth a sit-down stop if you're in the area - or stop off for a pastry to take away, like I did today.

Pastelaria Princesa Kensington

Okay, it's been 3 hours since I've had the most horrific experience and I'm still fuming.

We had to meet someone at this restaurant to discuss a business proposal. Under duress I decided to go anyway because I've been here before and my previous experience was dismal as well.

We arrived and the waitress acknowledged that we are going upstairs. After having to find the only clean table on the veranda we waited for 5 minutes before we left.- no one came to us to take an order to try clean up the mess around us.

It's not like they were busy, it's not as if they were short of staff, it's not as if I'm invisible!!

Disgusting, dirty and the worst service ever.

I will NEVER support this restaurant again.

Done!!
Tasty Traveller
Great weekend breakfast spot, just get there early though as the place gets totally full. The bakery downstairs has excellent Portuguese breads, deserts, and loads of other tasty things to try!

Freshly baked Portuguese rolls and pastries especially the pasteis de nata makes me feel like I'm back in portugal! Especially if you get them hot out the oven.

A really nice setting in an area which holds a lot of great memories out of my past. The restaurant have a European feel and the food looks great.

We had breakfast and my rye roll filled breakfast was rather dull and tasteless. The plate was filled with 2/3 of Macdonalds fries and a small roll with an egg, one piece of bacon with mozzarella melted over it.

We'll be back for lunch some time but not as great as I was expecting this time around.
The service was slow as we waited more than 30 min for our first Cappuccinos.
Lisa Gabriella Jasmine Strovall-Harf
The food wasn't Terrible- But nothing I would crave nor would it make me want to go back. I had the Calamari which I was hoping for it to be at least done in some sort of Peri-Peri/Lemon Butter sauce like generally served at the portugese restaurants I've been to before, but instead it was bland and rubbery. The boys had Prego rolls which they said were enjoyable!
For starters we also had the Prawn Rissoles- These were a good size but not warmed up properly and were a distasteful mix of warm and stone cold filling, the texture was also quite gooey as there was only 1 or 2 small chunks of prawn inside-Not what Im used to from other rissoles Ive had elsewhere.

The service was average, it would have been nice to have had some side plates to eat our starters (Rissoles) on-instead of having to use Napkins as plates, as well as the fact that I ordered a Pasteis De Nata for dessert which I Never ended up getting, but instead was just given the bill.

LOVE the food ! LOVE it! Great Service ...great atmosphere ...shame the waitresses really try... lovely place

Keep up the excellent work

Very happy customer!

I live just up the road from Princesa. As a result, I eat there at least once a week on average. There's a reason for that. The food is very homely, generous, and simply delicious. The prices are reasonable too.

Being Portuguese, I'd like to think I'm extra critical of this particular cuisine. I...

Every star there is for their pastel de nata. Amazing stuff. One of the few confectionaries where baked goods are realistically priced. One of these days shall sit down for a coffee.

In the area, so there is only one place to go for a genuine Portuguese experience.
I sat with my friend on the balcony while it was pouring with rain, but we were totally protected, the restaurant inside was packed, and this was at 14:30 on a Wednesday afternoon (speaks volumes)
My friend ordered a less traditional meal....a chicken salad, and by the looks of it, he had what seemed to be a half a chicken in there, so you definitely won't go hungry.
I opted for the medium rare Portuguese steak with all the trimmings
The steak was presented exactly as I ordered it and the ham and egg were perfect compliments, my chips were not the traditional wedge type and resembled the slim cut French fry, However they were in the traditional yummy gravy do they are forgiven.
All in all, when in Kensington and you want to experience the real deal Portuguese food, then you need to stop in here.
Luis
As a party of 2, we visited this restaurant during an afternoon of restaurant hopping trying to find a decent Portuguese restaurant with authentic flavors. This restaurant presents itself as a lunch restaurant, reminiscent of a taverna in Portugal you'd find locals eating at.
The restaurant itself could use a little decorating however, it doesn't have a very inviting look for the new potential customer. Its a very plain looking restaurant which lacks the atmosphere you'd expect from a Portuguese restaurant.Ironically however...we only chose to stop here specifically because it was packed with customers..and that's always a good sign. When the food arrived we soon realized why this place was extremely busy, the food is great and the flavors are authentic, making us quickly forget about our initial impressions of the restaurant. This became the last restaurant we visited that day because we were uncomfortably full from overindulging on a couple of dishes, I just have to revisit this restaurant to try more of their menu..This place like many others is probably one of Johannesburgs best kept secrets. If you're in the area of Kensington for lunch, this little Pastelaria is worth a visit

The custard tarts, custard slices, bread rolls, rissoles- actually everything in the deli section - is amazing! Want to try the seated menu soon, definitely a little hidden gem

This quaint restaurant is situated on the busy Queen Street in Kengsington. I have heard really good things about the food here and was finally glad to try it out. The restaurant is simply decorated and offers downstairs and upstairs seating. Upon entering we could smell delicious pastries baking and people chit chatting in portuguese. We went up to have a better view.

Pastelaria Princesa is always busy so I decided to try it out. It was ok.....that's all I can say. Good was not great but well priced so it didn't hurt when the bill came. Restaurant seemed a bit dirty for my liking.

Good risolles and Portuguese pasti treats best enjoyed as a take away. The service from the watrons is terrible especially when you pop in for a quick snack.

We went to eat lunch there today and being a Portuguese restaurant we were looking forward to trying out their trinchado. 4 of us had it and all 4 agreed that it was the worst trinchado we had ever had. Steak was tough and dry with little flavor, chips were old and the salad was dreary. Only plus points was the peri peri sauce and the service.

After some business shopping decided to have some late lunch with my 3 men. First time we had been to pastelaria princesa we loved it. And I must say we enjoyed it again.
I and Dog Food Man ordered a mobster prego roll. Looked delicious and all ingredients were fresh. But there was a funny smell I could not get myself to eat prego. Cláudio a guy that works there took pregos back to kitchen to figure out the problem. He figured out it was the presunto in the monster prego roll
We were shocked in a good way; to see how he handled it . He made sure he found out what the problem was. We didn't pay for pregos and we re ordered chouriço.
Chouriço was delicious; cappuccinos were great, orange juice great. My youngest had chicken which he loved and my oldest has octopus which he loved too.
We bought takeaway pasteis de natas and custard Swiss roll slices. Wow. Totally worth it

An absolute must! Princesa is a daily Sunday breakfast routine for my boyfriend and I and we adore this cute down to earth resurgent! Absolutely in love with their pastries and flake hot chocolate ! My boyfriend and I always order our drinks first and once those come we order our food and we never wait too long! I honestly cannot complain as I love their food, drinks and pastries. The upstairs balcony is my favorite seating place as it's just so peaceful. I fully recommend people to try this Portuguese restaurant out!😁

Came here for breakfast on Saturday morning after a bit of shopping, as we walked in there was no one to help you because all the waiters were super busy, I do understand its Saturday morning, we choose to sit upstairs because in the downstairs area all the tables are next to each other and it can get claustrophobic.

We waited a good 15 minutes before anyone came to give us a menu, we didn't want to wait any longer so we order our drinks which also took another 15 minutes to arrive, I ordered a hot chocolate and my boyfriend ordered a cappuccino, they weren't bad tasting but it wasn't out of this world either,

After we finished our drinks another waiter came to collect our empty mugs but didn't even ask if we wanted anything else to drink, after 20 minutes we were ready to leave without eating, as we were contemplating to go downstairs and pay for the drinks our food arrived, I ordered a farmers breakfast which came with 2 eggs, sausage, bacon, tomato, mushroom and 2 pieces of toast, after waiting so long for the food you would hope it tasted out of this world but it didn't, it tasted just like eggs and bacon, nothing spectacular, my boyfriend had an omelette which he said was average tasting, we didn't want to wait for another 20 minutes just for the bill so we went downstairs to pay.

We got a few pastel de nata and bola de berlin to take home and they were out of this world!

I won't be back here in a hurry but would go back just to pick up some pastries to eat at home,

Cons: Terrible service, no hospitality, average tasting food
Pros: pastries, pastries and more pastries try all of them!
Always a winner. Always great. Food venue bakery atmosphere location. Really to much goodness to go into detail. But different and better in so many ways other than the franchise mainline usuals...
Love it. Everybody has to try it.

Bought takeaways... i think my mom almost bought half the cakes they had. Opted for 1 each of the pregos... chicken, beef, roast beef and pork. Very soft and tender and nice rolls. But i would prefer more meat and a bit more sauce. The chips are crappy. The custard tarts are nice...mom says its the best she has had thus far. Very busy lunchtime and the staff and pretty friendly. Would like to try a sit down one day

Oh my gosh.... worse restaurant experience of 2014! Went for an early lunch with a friend that I havn't seen in a long time. So we were looking for a place with a down to earth feel and who served good homely food. Also this place came very highly recommended from a Portuguese colleague. First of all, we waited close to 40 minutes for a waiter to come take our order or wipe the dirty table that had remnants of the previous patron's meal - yuk! When the food came it was cold. Nothing on my plate had any taste. Bland is an understatement. My friend ordered the brinjal tower. This "tower" came in the form of 2 yes 2 stacks of sliced brinjals. Haibo, what did you do with the rest of the brinjal?? The final straw that broke the camel's back - the owner comes to us and he's like "is everything okay" I'm like "no - no one has taken our order yet after 40 min of waiting" and he's like "awwwww very busy today". Hello, there were probably 30 people there - if thats busy then I do not know what you'll do at full capacity. The only reason I am rating this place at all is due to their pasteis de nata which I ordered to take away. It was delish! Lastly do something about your filthy toilets - hah!

This is a nice place for lunch. The upstairs terrace allows for a nice meal outside. Nothing exceptional, but definitely enjoyable. Heads up, the food portions are big.

Overall: perfect place for regular cheap outings for coffee and bite to eat, especially for friends who want to catch up or loners who want to red the paper and don't want intrusive, obsessive service

Atmosphere: decent, clean

Seating: not uncomfortable, open, good variety of sunny/shady and central/private

Service: always friendly, polite, professional, fairly quick

Food: not exactly gourmet, but tasty and mostly low in price

Cakes and pastries gone down. Very dry. Service really bad. We were sick after eating their Rissois de camarao. Won't see me there again!

I have been here a number of times, I had lunch and a few coffee meetings . Their food is always good and the service good. Their Portuguese pastries is an absolute must, try the pasteis de nata ( which perverso bally i feel is the best in the R D of A), their bolo do caco (Portuguese flat bread) is brilliant. I have also ordered sweet and savoury platters for functions which has always been a hit. So if you want to have a cup of coffee with a pasteis de nata or a prego with salads or fries this bus your place. Tey it, you wont be sorry

One of my favourite eateries in one of my favourite suburbs in Jozi. I cant think of a better place to have breakfast on a Saturday morning than the upstairs balcony at Princesa. The vibe is always so cosmopolitan and the view of the buzzing Queen Street adds to the specialness of it all. The food is great but you're coming here for the desserts especially the Pasteis de Nata which is the best I have had.
