Review Chiapas - Johannesburg

Leana Theunissen
Delicious, fresh, Mexican food. Their prices are very reasonable, and their portions are very generous. We visited on a Sunday at lunch time, so no vibe, but the lady who was serving us was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend a visit there, we will be back soon!
Tsholofelo Wechoemang
The food was divine! Such a great eating experience. And it's affordable. The tacos here are just delectable. The service however leaves much to be desired. I would go back, just for those tacos.
Tahlia Naidu
Really good, fresh Mexican food. Good variety of options at an affordable cost. I keep coming back.
Clive Nass
Amazing Mexican food, wide variety of fresh take aways or eat in , great prices , very friendly and efficient staff !
Cheylene Mudumbe
Love their crunchy tacos. Not 100% authentic but its still got good enough flavour. Love the price, too. Under R100 per meal. Had a good first & second experience here. The staff is overworked like many, sadly, but if you are friendly they are friendly. I don't think the negative reviews about the staff are necessarily true. Everyone is going through a lot, just be as friendly as you can. The lady who helped us was very kind and acomodating with our order and we "customized" a few things - she was totally fine with it. If there is one negative point, I don't like that they charge R10 for guacamole. In a country that has so many avocados, come on. Be like Chipotle in flavour and populatiry... but don't be like Chipotle and charge extra for guac.

Chiapas generally makes good food, but their consistency seems to be an issue. At my last visit, some of the ingredients I.e sour cream and tomatoes) weren’t available, the explanation being “ we have run out”. My Nachos clearly clogged in the fryer so they weren’t as crispy as usually- apart from the fact that they stuck to each other, making the eating a little difficult. The melted cheese also stuck to the lid, which I hadn’t experienced before. There is a sign that suggests that criticism should be communicated via email, but since it was suggested at a previous occasion that I was merely trying to solicit a free meal, I’m rather posting this publicly this time. Earlier review (2021) - There was a time where their Nachos tasted stale, but I am glad to say that Chiapas is back to serving the best Nachos in Joburg. Total waiting time for food is also very convenient. The chicken can be a little dry, the pulled beef being much better. Jalapeños would also be a welcome option.
Robert Laithwaite
One of my favourite Mexican spots. The build your own... Element of it is really nice. I love the nachos and the crispy tacos and the pulled beef is my favourite topping! I would highly recommend going here if you enjoy Mexican food. The service is also great.
Rudolph Botha
Awesome eatery experience. So simple and full of flavour. Friendly and helpful staff, clean space and fast service! Coming come back for more, thank you Lindy!
Nayhla Erasmus
The burrito is very nice I really enjoyed my meal here and I like how caring the staff are they ask specifically if you want cheese melted or how much of an item you want it’s very nice
Mumtaz Saley
My first time eating here and the experience was daunting. Let’s start of by saying it’s #halaal certified You aren’t sure what goes where or what to do and the lady behind the counter seems to have a hard time hearing between me having a mask on and the music being played and a loud level. However once we got over the whole we can’t hear each other issue, the staff member does walk you trough the process of how to get the perfect meal. I got the the hard taco with steak. It’s absolutely mouthwatering and made my tummy happy. The staff love their jobs ❤️💜 big plus. Will I go back? Accept for only being told afterwards about the additional charges. I will go back for the food. I will go back wiser as well. Food portions are big.
Idowu Aruleba
I got a great portion of well-prepared food and enjoyed every bite. The prices are also reasonable.

Quick service, fresh ingredients and awesome flavour. Great Mexican-inspired dishes. Quantities are sufficient. Keep up the good work.

I had a great time and the portion was very good. Food so fresh and tasty. Will go back definitely.

It's always a pleasure to visit such a warm welcoming fast-food place. And the coolest thing about Chiapas is u get to built ur own meal. The food is fresh, no really the food is fresh and too tasty and too nice to eat. Well done Chiapas staff. Keep up da good work.

Thursday was my first visit to Chiapas's. Staff were awesome and the food yum yum delicious. Just missed the option of coffees, but the waitress was happy to obtain from the coffee shop in the Zone. Thank you.
Cedric Main
Friendly staff who help and advise you for the first time when trying Mexican food especially. Had best of all world's and enjoyed really tasty food. Might look little and expensive abit, but at end of meal it is filling and delicious.
Theo Makhathini
Honestly, probably the worst Nachos i have ever had. Just food on a plate. Not great flavours. The chilli sauce was great though. The Burrito was better, in comparison. Will definitely not go there again. But Great customer service.
Etienne Dreyer
Fantastic meal and quick service. Great healthy Mexican fast food. Good value for money. Love their burritos!
Daleen Kemp
I was at the branch in Brooklyn Mall and absolutely loved it. The food is great and the service even better. Thank you so much
Hazel Preston
Fantastic food friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend it immediately

What's the point of having a contact number if no one answers the damn phone for hours!!! Pathetic
Pierre R Le Grange
Another amazing meal from CHIAPAS. Friendly services, but a good spice on the food
Jared Gemmell
Excellent service with smiles from staff and food was great. Neat, clean and simple. Impressed
Freddy Mitchum
The burrito was mushy because of the tomato-based "pulled" beef (which does not taste braised at all). The chicken does also taste cheap.
Michael Brown
Great food and awesome staff! Tamala rocks! She is so friendly and gives personal service.
Leigh Munro
Ordered nachos via ubereats and specified to add cheese and sour cream. Nachos arrived with no cheese or sour cream. Presentation was sloppy. Very disappointing.
Aisha Moolla
We ordered a beef burrito and crispy chicken taco. The food arrived quite quickly and it was really hot when it arrived. The burrito was HUGE (picture added with my hand beside it for comparison). The meat was extremely tender and flavourful. The portion was huge and we couldn't finish it! The tacos did not travel well and was a bit of a mess when it arrived. It had also split and leaked through the bag. The taco shells had become soft already so it made the taco difficult to eat. However, the actual flavour of the taco was amazing!

Honestly used to love this place and ate here often , Ordered a burrito today it just tasted wet and raw?? Perhaps a change in the tortillas used it just tastes unappetizing.
Hassan Shaikh
Excellent service and the most delicious and fresh food. I eat here regularly
Matt Levendig
The amount of guacamole and meat is really a big negative for this restaurant. Although I love the food and it’s authentic Mexican taste, I can not help but be repulsed by the dismal portion sizes which are frankly embarrassing and not very Mexican.
Vincent Bezuidenhout
Food flavors lean way more to Indian food than Mexican food. No corner stones flavors of authentic Mexican Cuisine. The guacamole was the South African equivalent of mashed avocado. Perhaps a suggestion, if patrons opt to eat in, offer plates and proper cutlery. The plastic knives and forks were incredibly difficult to make use of. Portion sizes were decent and definite value for money. Staff are attentive and helpful. I wouldn’t recommend as a Mexican eatery but for value for money it’s not bad.
Aneesa
I love this place. It’s quick and efficient. Food is always good. Very flavorful food. I think prices are very reasonable and good food portions. Love the burrito bowls.
Frank_Cadillac
Great food, however the portions sizes are shameful! Very unsatisfied. A truly PATHETIC amount of guacamole is given, as well at your choice of protein. Very unhappy!
Stephanie Martinez Lima
I love Chiapas. It’s become a tradition for me and my boyfriend to get burritos and then walk down to the parking lot and eat in the car. We used to take the burritos home but we moved all the way to Bryanston so it would be cold if we drove home, but we kind of love the car tradition now. I wish Chiapas was all over the place. - Pulled beef burrito squad.
Neo
I got a little lost trying to find the place. Finally found it and the food was great and the service was okay. Bought two burrito bowls (sit in) and bought two more plus a burrito wrap for the road. The one complaint I have is that the lady filling my burrito bowls seemed to put too little portions in my bowls compared to my partner's and other "bigger" customers (I'm on the smaller side) - as if assuming I do not eat a lot (which I do)
Jon Kleiman
Veg burrito bowl is incredible! Loved everything about it. Would have enjoyed even more if we didn't use plastic cutlery but other than that it's a must for anyone in the area!
Hena Bhoolia
I appreciate the friendly service and variety of foods at this establishment as well as the "build it yourself" style of service. I've made a few visits to Chiapas so far and have enjoyed the food for the most part, however, the quality and taste of the food varies and sometimes its really tasty while other times rather bland.
Another critique I have is that I witnessed one of the staff members refilling the grated cheese container with her Bare hands.. Not bothering to put a glove on... In cases where you don't see your food being prepared I guess Ignorance is Bliss but it was quite off-putting seeing that as she was busy with a whole lot of tasks behind the counter so who knows how clean her hands were.
Shianne
I ordered the burrito bowl with chicken, the portion is quite big and very affordable. All the ingredients were fresh and worked well together. Staff are patient and very friendly.
NielZ
Decided to try this place for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Even though it is a fast food place, staff was friendly, food was better than I had expected and ambience was decent for a fast food / take-away place. Will definitely recommend it if you are looking to grab some quick Mexican grub. Portion sizes are decent and Prices are reasonable too.
Veagiie
I am vegan and Chiapas is my go to. The quality of food is constantly amazing especially their guacamole. I always get the nachos with veggies, tomato salsa, corn salsa, rice, lettuce and guacamole. The staff are always friendly. I would just recommend that they add desserts to the meu☺️
Keletso Moshape
It funny how, I was not sure about the place until my boyfriend convinced me to try it out and I must say that I loved it. It's always nice trying something you and to my surprise it went well.😋😋
Naledi.t.mohohlo
The food was bland, absolutely no salt. Presentation even worse. Guacamole and sour cream everywhere but not in the taco. And the order was wrong. The food wasn’t as spicy as I had indicated.
Allawrence28
The nachos were very good but the green chilli isn’t very hot as it’s perceived as! Other than that great service, very efficient and helpful. Will go back again soon!
AJ Krugel
We eventually decided to try Chiapas and very happy we did. The staff was quite friendly and patient with us as we had no clue how to order.
The food was great too, decent amount for what I think was a reasonable price. Might just be our new favorite take away.
Tracy Swaedi
Always a wonderful experience. The staff is always friendly and the food is flavourful. The chicken burrito is my favorite, I have it for lunch and I don't need to eat for the rest of the day.
Grant Baben
Very nice, very fresh, easy to create your meal. Could tidy the pace up a bit more. Staff are friendly. Basic decor, comfortable enough. Will definitely come back.
Michaela Leon
A few days back I mastered the courage and walked into the rather empty store to get a quick lunch. I had the vegetarian bowl, which was surprisingly nice. 😁😁
Tam Loves Food
Tasty Mexican food, best as a takeaway. Everything is customised which is great. Ingredients are fresh and flavours are good! Would like it if they had soft shell tacos as well.
Sean William
First of all, I love Mexican food.

Because I’m very health conscious when it comes to my diet, I decided to order a bowl. Nothing like a Mexican bowl.

Being a bit disappointed in the portion size as the bowl had a lot more room for food. I decided to add my own extra food at home, because the order would not have been very filling.

Next time I’ll certainly buy at the restaurant and not order takeaway.
Inish Merchant
Mouth Watering Mexican - Tacos, Burritos, Nachos - they have it all. One of my goto place for a quick bite. My pick - burrito bowl with green chilli salsa sauce - keeps it healthy yet tasty. The restaurant is pocket friendly yet the portion is sufficient. Kudos to the staff who are always welcoming.
Joanne Harripersadh
The best burrito I’ve ever tasted ! Love the hot salsa. This is a weekly meal for my boyfriend and I. They always use fresh ingredients which is what makes the meals amazing
Cobus Pieterse
What a find!! Like Mexico in your mouth. That chiapias sauce on the chicken tacos.. wowzers😋😋 Thanks also for the biggest smiles and friendliest service in the Zone!

So, I used Uber Eats for the first time today, and chose this restaurant to order from, because it stated a 20 - 30 minute delivery. Err umm, try an hour!!

I ordered a beef burrito and some tortillas & guacamole. My first impression was of a burrito packed very full of filling. Very nice. It was packed with beef and peppers/veg. I can’t say there was anything wrong with it but it just wasn’t special at all. I found it disappointing cause I really felt like signature Mexican. I’ve eaten much tastier burritos at other Mexican restaurants in Gauteng. Maybe the chicken is a better option??

The guacamole was nice and so too the tortillas. There just wasn’t near enough guacamole to finish my tortillas.

I’d like to try one of the chicken burritos next time, or some tacos to ensure I get the full experience. Overall however the meal never moved my soul!
Ashdesai5
Bright, clean and fresh looking place. We’ve only ever had the veg nacho plate....but they are seriously delicious....only downside is that they are less than generous with their Gaucamole...otherwise this would have been a 4/5 for me.
Devan Chidananda Chetty
Excellent Mexican food. try the Nachos crushed in a bowl with all veg options baked with cheese on top and Guac on the side. Enjoyed the sauce, however they have sadly watered it down, not cool..
Nasreen
Love this place. If I lived closer I'd be eating here every weekend ! I always have the tacos.. Its divine ! Friendly service. Nice and informal setting. Great for hanging out. Quite pricey but worth it because the food never fails to impress .
Fiona Hao
Friendly staff and portions are good. Food is fresh, however, meat is not expected to be the softest. This is an ideal "to-go" meal that is healthier. You must be willing to spend over R50 for a full meal. Not very budget friendly for a student if you want to be there often.

Chiapas Mexi-CAN!!!
I am not a fan of Mexican food. For me the mixing of bread, rice and beans is just not a good combination... at all. But then I walked into Chiapas and my mind was completely blown... from the super friendly staff (Lebo is a burrito queen!!!) To the fact that I can choose every single ingredient (how much or how less) I prefer is a super bonus.

A quick review of my top 3 moments.

1. As soon as you walk through that door the staff are supper attentive. Personally ever since moving to Jozi I haven't experienced good customer service but these guys are so on point.

2. The affordability of the meal is spot on. So much value for money. I don't mind spending my hard earned money here again.

3. The food. From presentation of the deconstructed ingredients to the final meal of choice everything's is so colourful, flavorful, fresh and spicy!

P.S I would of added a pic... but I realized after I demolished that tasty burrito that I didn't take one. Seems like I have an excuse to go back.

This is a small restaurant in rosebank that I will definitely visit again. The staff were very nice and helpful. And the food was pretty nice.
Masemolamasego
I love love love their tacos and burritos. Their service is just alright. What I enjoy the most is the building of your own meal to suit you, it's the second best part of the meal (of course eating the meal is the best part).
Lesedi Motsoako Mashilo
Great mexican cuisine, but limited variety of drinks😏. Very friendly staff. I enjoyed the burrito bowl with lots of avocado. I cant wait to drive to Rosebank for lunch soon.
Radley Seew
The steak was burnt with a weird flavour. Pulled beef tasted like it was sitting in warm water. Food was cold and extremely oily. The only thing I enjoyed was the sprite I ordered
Fareed Hare
I love this place. This is my favorite go-to-spot for a quick bite. I usually stick to the burrito option and I alternate between the beef and the chicken - they are both really good. The burritos are big and will definitely fill almost anyone. Awesome food! Awesome Service!
Tlotlo Letlape
First time eating Mexican food and it was really amazing to have. Service was quick and it filled me up. Will be back over and over again to checkout the entire menu.

Chiapas! One of my new favourite spots to grab Mexican food.

My sister introduced me a couple of weeks ago and since then I have been hooked.

Firstly, the service is so friendly, bouncy and exceptional! Greeted with a smile, each and every single time!

The nachos with extra cheese, crema and guac is to die for.

My favourite is the burrito with chicken, cheese, beans, crema and guac! It is absolutely delicious. I went for 3 days in a row to put things into perspective - haha.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM; please consider joining UberEATS - this would literally make my whole family so happy. I know it's a big consideration but I thought I would put it out there. I know I'm definitely not your only customer who would support you guys on that platform.

Highly, highly recommended to EVERYONE!
Sumeshnee Bachan
I was really impressed with the food and services here. Had a spicy beef burrito which could use a little more bite, but overall - really enjoyed it.

Update:
Been here a few more times since the original review and added 0.5 into this since I have seen an improvement from my last review.
Even got the hubby into it. I still order my default choice. It’s my new favorite Mexican spot and I will go here anytime I am in rosebank.

Original:
This is definitely my favorite Mexican spot which was recommended by 2 of my friends.

I went there twice already. My first experience was great as expected. The ingredients were so fresh and the ladies that assisted were very helpful.

I ordered the burrito bowl with brown rice, pulled beef, hot sauce (which is amazing), corn and sour cream.
We ordered as a take away and when I tasted it, it was amazing.

The second time I went, the lady wasn't very friendly and service wasn't great. The rice wasn't done so nice as well and this is the reason I have given 0.5 less.
Dhruv Sodha
Food is always of a high standard. Menu is slightly confusing the first time but there's always someone around to explain it to you. Fantastic smiles and service from Lebo on 12 Aug!
Joash Narainsamy
I rather enjoyed my meal at this Chipotle inspired Mexican eatery. Think of it as the Mexican version of Anat. You can build your own burrito 🌯 based on whatever fillings tickles your taste buds. Their nachos and guacamole is amaze!
Clarissa Ralston
Nice place with friendly staff. The food was delicious and they are not stingy on ingredients. Foods a little bit pricey, but the portions are good and it's very tasty.
Candistripe
Value for money. Great take away spot for something healthier. Burrito bowl my favourite 'healthy' takeaway. The hot sauce is the best. Pulled beef my recommendation. Warm and satisfying.
Ashley
I still feel like this place is a bit of a secret given the wide spread popularity of Mexican food.

Meals range from R65 - R85 dependent on your meat choice and preference for quac. All the classics are on offer from hard shell tacos to a healthier Mexican salad option. It's a great takeaway option although there is ample seating on offer. Food is always fresh and generous in portion size, my only criticism is that the quacolmole should really be a standard topping on not come at extra charge.

Service is friendly and efficient.
Ataa Khan
Excellent service and great tasting food, Keep it up, the soft tacos with pulled beef, beans, brown rice, cheddar and sour cream is amazing, Value for money
Gary Greenberg
If you in the mood for a quick bite at a place that is attempting to duplicate an American concept this place will fill that void in your stomach. It is definitely not the best Mexican place in Joburg however there is something for everyone on the menu for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. The service could be better as could the variety of items on the menu. For the price the quality of food this place is quite average. There is nothing unique about this place. Hopefully they will find their feet in the near future.
Erica Lesna
YUM!!! My brother took me here as a surprise (because I love Mexican food) and it surpassed my expectations. I made my own burrito and it was fantastic. Very chilled atmosphere, more of a fast food concept. You don't come here for a dining experience but rather for the food itself. It is fun to creatively mix your chosen ingredient to create your own burrito, tacos, nachos etc. It is value for money and tastes much better than the burritos I've had in the other Mexican restaurants I've been to. A hidden gem and definitely a must try!
Foodilicious Escapades By Mia
Crunchy overloaded tacos are definitely my favourite meal and Chiapas does not disappoint. Their pulled beef Tacos with fillings and flavours of your choice are amazing.

Halaal Mexican food at its best 👌
Richiethegunner
Honestly one of my favorite restaurants and right by me. All their ingredients are very fresh and absolutely delicious. I would say worth going out your way just to come here it really is fantastic. Even when the restaurant is full you'll rarely wait more than 20 minutes max from when you walk in the door to when you can eat. The tables are always clean and it's a nice atmosphere. My one criticism would be that they don't fill whatever you order (in my experience generally tacos) as much as they could with their assorted Ingredients but aside from that absolutely fantastic.
Nazneen Ahmed
Mexican is not particularly at the top of my food choices which is why I wanted to try Chiapa.

The service was really good and friendly. As I walked in I was approached and asked if I knew how the process worked etc.

After a full day of eating I was looking for something lite, so I opted for some steak nachos.

The steak was soft but there was something odd about the flavour... almost as if the spices weren't cooked out enough. It was also very oily.

Also to my horror, as I approached the last station of my nacho building, there was NO GUACAMOLE! Like how? How is nachos even nachos without a good guacamole?

The lady behind the counter didn't charge me for the gauc and proceeded to scrape whatever was left in the bowl onto my nachos, so I got about a table spoon worth. I'm sure my experience would have been slightly different had I been able to slather my nachos with some avo goodness.

I loved the fact that they were halal, so I could try the meat option. What I will criticize is the ratio of the nachos to toppings. I felt that it needed more toppings for the amount of chips in the portion.
Robyn
Tamala and the other staff always give us the friendliest service. The food is always fresh and the restaurant has been spotless on every visit
Susan Gawith
Very good spot for a quick lunch if you like Mexican. Choose your base and add toppings. I like the salad with pulled beef. Be warned that the hot sauce is much hotter than most chains.
Gemma Northing
I enjoy Mexican food and when I came across this cute looking in and out Mexican fiesta I just had to give it a go.
If I'm honest it's quite easy to miss as it's not the most inviting place, but the food definitely makes up for this flaw. I ordered the nachos with chicken and a choice of toppings. I topped mine with guacamole, tomato, sweet corn, sour cream and a generous amount of melted cheddar. My friend went to American and said that this place share a big similarity with Taco Bell. So if your biggest wish is to indulge in a meal from Taco Bell, this is apparently the place to go.
Prasantha Bisetty
Love the concept of this and the nice clean fresh flavours, and its so nice to have a healthier fast food option other than burgers. Everything about the store is clean and simple. Service is great !! On arrival the lady asked me if I had eaten there before and took me through everything. I had a burrito bowl with steak which was good. They have burritos, nachos, tacos and a salad option, you then choose between steak, pulled beef, chicken or veggies and add your fillings and flavours. I just wish that they had abit more drink options as there is only coke, sprite and still or sparkling water.

Asad Suliman
Terrible food. Burritos were doughy. Chicken was burned and there was chicken pieces in my pulled beef burrito. I wouldn't be returning here any time soon
A Foodie Travels
Had a chicken burrito from order in choosing my toppings just like you would do in the store .Chicken was tender, was tasty burrito ,sauce could be better
Sam
I wouldn't have visited this on my own but a few people mentioned it was good so we decided to give it a try. Luckily we only ordered one meal.

The set up resembles a very clinical canteen. It's very much a quick way and leave vibe. We tried the chicken nachos for R65. What I didn't like was the server dishing out food was quite stingy compared to other portions we saw. He also didn't exactly ask properly what we wanted on it and only offered one selection from each category whereas I saw others getting everything.

The flavour wasn't great and we became quite bored of the meal. Also eating nachos in a high container isn't great as you can't get to everything easily. The only thing that had any nice flavour was the green salsa.

Overall I wouldn't go back. I definitely wouldn't recommend the nachos. I think a bowl or burrito would be a better option.
Chante Daries
My go to Mexican place where I can get tasty burritos and tacos at a good price. I really enjoy chiapas. I've always had a good experience so far. And I like the whole concept of choosing your own fillings etc.
JoziStyle
Nachos at Chiapas. They could afford to push their flavours a lot further but a nifty hangout at The Zone. Service is swift and friendly, and I love that one can customize their options with preferred toppings.
Eleni
I absolutely love Mexican food and have always been a fan of Mexican food. A while back, I decided to give Chiapas a chance... I may be a Mexican food snob, but I really expected more from this place, especially since it is at Rosebank and all. I am a strict vegetarian and they managed to confuse my order with a friend's one... luckily the skeptic in me refused to eat my burrito until he had a bite of his.
Yelper
This restaurant reminds me of an American franchise called Chipotle. Es Muy Bueno 🌮 the best Mexican cuisine I have had in South Africa, and the most authentic in comparison to actual Mexican dishes. Well done guys 👏🏼
Junior
This was amazing food. Their pulled beef was quite amazing and I'm hoping that they'll soon at pulled pork to their menu soon.

Hoping to come back and try some nachos soon
Clare Appleyard
The Mexican food quest continues. We decided to give Chiapas a bash on Saturday night when we were in the area.
It's a build-your-own concept whereby you choose your base (taco/burrito/burrito bowl), choose your meat (beef, pulled beef or chicken) and then top it up with corn salsa, lettuce, rice and so forth. The only additional charge is if you want guacamole, which will cost you an extra R10.

The two beef options are pulled beef or beef cubes in a chipotle sauce - I made a point of asking how tender the beef cubes were and the server's confident answer was "very tender".

Just to be sure I asked for a piece to sample. Our opinions on tender differed quite substantially so I went for the pulled beef. It was a fairly substantial burrito by the time I added cheese, lettuce, corn, tomato - but everything lacked flavour.

Pulled pork would be a great addition but as a Halaal outlet that's obviously not an option. Not bad, but nothing outstanding or special. Not somewhere we'd rush back to.

Ayesha Matwadia
Absolutely love this place. Service is good. As good as a build your own mexican meal can be.

Everything is generally fresh and delicious. All the proteins are good and they freshly fry the taco shells and nachos.

Their salsas are good too. Overall always have a good experience here. And you can see that they put the extra effort into their food.

The only point of critisimn : the heat on the salsa's is inconsistent. Sometimes the same salsa is hot and other times quite mild.
Angie
Yay! Mexican food! :)
Food is tasty, fresh, crunchy and flavorful! Venue is modern and clean.
It works like Anat, where you choose your ingredients over the counter and the staff dish up them up into tortillas/tacos/burritos (you get 3 tortillas each)!
We tried the beef and chicken (both good but preferred chicken) with and without avo... If you dont take avo you will kick yourself, and no-one likes to kick themselves, so take the avo! :)
Staff lacked enthusiasm and then had a staff meeting right next to us, even though the place was quite empty...

Besides that, we have recommend it to friends and would go back.
Irina
I love this place! Their burritos are to die for!
Awesome that you can see how your food is made and that you can pick your own toppings- very fun and interactive.
By the way, did I mention that their burritos are heavenly?
Jolene
I love this place way too much! I always insist on bringing everyone here because I think it's such great value for money. I usually have the burrito bowl and the portions are very generous. The staff are always so friendly and I have never had a complaint from anyone I brought here. I would perhaps just like to see a few more options on the menu, but other than that I think this is probably my favourite food stop in Rosebank Mall.
Daniel France
One of the best places to grab a bite in Rosebank. Their food is really good and being able to construct your own meal is an added bonus; espicially seeing as you don't have to pay extra per item you put on as it's included in the price (except guacamole which is understandable). The guac is super tasty so it's worth the extra R10! The service is also incredibly friendly and helpful.

Definitely give this place a visit if you're a fan of fresh and tasty Mexican food.
Jenny Louw
I love Mexican food and after hearing some really good things I was excited when we decided to stop here for lunch.

I like that we received the food quite quickly. I had a veggie crispy taco. The taco itself was good however I found the filling to be a little bland. We all had different things and felt that there is a kick of flavour missing and that it was overall not really something special.

The price wasn't bad for Mexican food in SA but the portion aren't very generous either.
Stacey Norsworthy
Mexican take-away spot in the Zone with average store decor. They could pump up the mexican vibe a bit. I had the soft tacos which were average. I would recommend the hard tacos, either way this meal can get messy
Irfaan
This place was a nice surprise. Needing a quick meal I decided to give it a try. Something different as opposed to the food court usual suspects. Simple menu. Build your own meal Mexican food. There are plenty of this type of setup out there but this is the first serving Mexican food. Good options, though I do think there could be more variety with add ons. That said the food is delicious. I tried the soft tacos which is a good serving, each having a different meat, chicken, steak and pulled beef. Setup up is simple and perfect should you want to sit down. Would be great to see this place expand to other locations. Will be back for more.
Saltnsas
Big fan of this place. Awesome if you are looking for a quick meal that has more salad and less fat than other take away spots. Good value for money and great tasting.

*Edit*

Seems like once again a pretty good spot has lost its quality. So I was there last week and its was okay but definitely not as good as before. But today was the end of it. I ordered a delivery and what I got was 1 broken taco which created a river of rice and 2 incomplete ones.

I didn't get my lettuce, I didn't get my salsa, I didn't get the sour cream.

Just dry rice and dry chicken on a dry shell.

It's sad because I really like tacos. Where do i go now?

*End of Edit*

arriba arriba, andale andale...

I feel like Speedy Gonzales, also i realize how politically incorrect all our cartoons were. lol, i've always loved Mexican cuisine, firstly because i love spicy salsa's and avo's secondly because as a kid i always thought Mexicans looked and did cool things, whether it was the bad guys like the Mexican drug cartel, or the luchadores, everything about Mexico fascinated me, Día de Muertos is still today one of the most awesome celebrations to honor the dead. and i guess what im trying to say is that the Mexican culture is so colourful and amazing you have to expect the same from their dishes.

Now when it comes to trying these Mexican establishments i always find a lack it taste and its like they're trying to ruin my views of Mexican food. But gratefully this was not one of those establishments

The idea of this place is also quite cool, you choose your outer shell... burrito, taco, nachos... you then go down the line throwing all the other ingredients in. and although they have all the basic ingredients i felt like they could offer more. also why do i pay more for avo.

See i understand that what they offer is a traditional range of mexican ingredients that you can throw into whatever you choose, but what if i wanted to throw some mozzarella on there, and some jalapenos, and why is there not a spicy avo option. also why is there no pulled pork, and do they know fish tacos are awesome.

In terms of food and service they are great, the food was delicious, and the service was good, the venue itself is also quite cool. my brother did say i have to mention that they gave us only 2 serviettes for four people eating really messy food which was a bit of a thoughtless thing to do on their part.

And again for the price i'd like to see more options. but other than that i definitely enjoyed the experience and will be back.

Mexican food so fresh and vibrant....me and my friends have gone looking for the best Mexican restaurants in Johannesburg and Chiapas is in the lead by far! Had the Beef strip Burrito with everything on besides rice and chilli, my friends had the soft tacos which you get 3 good sized and fully stuffed tacos. Nice and clean and not cluttered, definitely going there again. Being to Mexico before and have had authentic burritos and I guess this is as close to that as I will ever find in Johannesburg.

Great for a quick bite. You basically build your own or pick and choose as you go and your food is ready immediately.

I like this Mexican restaurant a lot. The ingredients are super fresh. I recommend the pulled beef option! Delicious!!

Chiapas is a quick and easy Mexican spot that serves some really tasty food. Their menu is simple build-your-own fare, and you can choose between burritos, tacos, a normal bowl and salad.

I ordered the pulled beef burrito which was yum. I recommend adding everything and extra guac (unfortunately you have to pay R10 for it). If you choose the hot salsa prepare for super spiciness. The ingredients were all fresh and flavourful. Their pulled beef wasn't bad, but I must say my boyfriend's chicken was better.

It has a cafeteria vibe so it's not the greatest for a proper sit down meal, but fine if you want a quick bite. The staff also seemed quite grumpy and were quite rude to the lady behind us in line.

The meat portions are small (1 serving spoon). A can of cold drink is R18!! You get served in takeaway containers and cuttlery, even when you eat in!!! I am hurt.

I'm a big fan of the meal in your hand concept plus I love (authentic) Mexican food. I had a chance to check out this copy-cat Chipotle in Rosebank that I came across randomly (still unsure why SA'S need to flatter American businesses by a virtual duplication of their concept without adding anything that's South African?)

Anyway, the beef burrito I ordered was very generous with portions -- the meat was definitely dried out (maybe sitting in the warmer too long?) so that's a negative -- the salsas were very tasty though -- I did have a very big mess on my hands trying to eat the burrito as it leaked everywhere which is not the sign of proper preparation.

The environment is very sterile (hospital like) and the staff were friendly but rather slow. They also had no idea about working at a copy-cat restaurant so maybe the owner should send them to the States so they can see the real deal. I do hope the burrito/meal-in-your-hand concept takes off here as I think it's a more affordable and healthy option for quick meals.

Mexican inspired restaurants have been popping up all around Joburg recently! Chiapas is a welcome addition in Rosebank, and a pay before you eat concept.

Choose your meal style - taco, burrito, bowl, salad or nachos - then select between beef, chicken or vegetarian and add your toppings.

Service is efficient and friendly, and the place is super clean. Pay for your meal and eat in (with disposable cutlery) or take it home.

The food is tasty and portions are well sized. What I love the most is the simple and stylish interior. I'll definitely be back for more!

Popped in a while ago to see the food, burnt meat and beans swimming in thick congealed liquid, staff were behind the counter but no one offered help. It was just as grey and miserable inside as it was outside in the pouring rain. Not what it used to be so would not rush back

Walking through TheZone and this place caught my eye, looked interesting from a far so I had to go in and try, one of those adventurous days. Decor was quite nice, partially due to its simplicity and them not trying to overdo it. Bought the crispy tacos with pulled beef and most of the the fillings in different combinations plus the extra guacamole. Was actually the 1st time I had a taco and it had an interesting taste. It is definitely worth trying and I am definitely planning on going back and trying everything on the menu. I recommend that everyone goes and tries this place. Only complaint would be how slow the process of paying is given that there is only 1 pay point, but otherwise, great place!

so this basically Chipotle Mexican Grill for this of you who have travelled throughout the US, down to the T, and exact replica.....so I'm basing my review on my experience there. I'm only going to judge and comment on the food as the layout is totally the same as the original brand CHIPOTLE. the food was good fresh and went down well, and its a good variety for johannesburg, will definitely be back for more i was able to order what i normally order when at chipotle so, good for them in doing this down here!

If you are ever in the mood for Mexican Cuisine, you need to get to this place! The food is divine and definitely that authentic Mexican flavour :) Went for a burrito in a bowl - consisting of beans, beef, corn peppers, tomatoes.. This way of eating was actually much better that having it in a burrito as I was able to enjoy all the flavours without the interference of the wheat flour tortilla..

Smiles all round and you be scooping out the bottom of the bowl!!

A ‘build-your-own’ meal quick service restaurant where you get to choose the exact amount of each ingredient. Great for a quick lunch. The chicken burrito bowl was reasonably priced and delivered in terms of freshness, taste and flavour.

Came in for a quick take away, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I like that the menu is not overwhelming, very simple. I had the chicken burrito and it delivered on flavour!
The ingredients were fresh and a the portion generous. Will definately be back.

Amazing burrito and well priced as servings are huge. The service was pretty good too although perhaps lacking a bit of order when I arrived and waited quite a while to have my order taken while they were explaining how it works to some other patrons. Not bad enough to get me down though and I'll definitely be back! They have bowls, burritos, tacos, the works with fresh and tasty fillings.

Noticed this little restaurant/take-away place while roaming around The Zone looking for a quick bite.

There was a short queue but it went really quickly as service was quite good.

We ordered the chicken soft tacos and pulled beef crispy tacos. And basically, you choose what toppings to add on as you go past the "bar". The pulled beef taco wasn't that good for me as the beef had a very odd chewy consistency and odd flavour, however the chicken taco was absolutely delicious.

Also they're not stingy with the toppings which is a big bonus.

Possibly the best burrito I've had in my life, was pleasantly surprised when I came across this place

I enjoyed the "build your own" concept" where you choose your own base i.e. tacos, burittos, bowl etc then a protein and bascially any other toppings you would like. This is especially great if you're dining with fussy eaters.

The atmosphere was laid back and the staff were friendly, but I wish there was a little more space inside the branch

Yes at last there is a page for this restaurant so that I can tell everyone about the best crispy tacos.

So I was pleasantly surprised when I found this spot in The Zone. I love Mexican food. So how does it work ? It works like a production line. You firstly pick what style meal you want, we chose to have crispy tacos. Then you choose your protein, additions and flavours. We had the steak filling with guac, cheddar cheese and red chilli salsa. Honestly what a good combo, I can't wait to have it again when I am in Joburg.

The service was good. All the staff were friendly and had big smiles. You get your food, pay at the till, seat yourself and ENJOY!
