Review City Perk Cafe - Johannesburg

Sejal
Lovely lil establishment in town to grab a coffee or a snack.

This café is in a well gentrified area of the inner city. The eye is bombarded with a million and one points of interest from the mosaic tile paving to the art deco facade of the neighbouring buildings - it is indeed a beautiful spot. The food was fine with a significant serving size but the price matches. The gourmet sandwich I had would have been better with smoked salmon as per the menu, however they were out. I appreciate them being accommodating of that with the substitution of poached salmon. The milkshake was delicious. I am giving a 4 star rating because the wait was very long but the service in terms of friendliness was good.

Great place for breakfast in the Jhb city center

Great hospitality, great stuff, great location and overall best of Jo'burg. One of the few authentic gems of marshalltown still standing and making great food. True epitome of 'town'.

This Cafe has Devine food, the aura makes you forget that you are in Joburg CBD. It is a nice spot to catch a breath from the busy Johannesburg. I came here after a long day at Home Affairs and Labour Department. The manager took my 1 week old for a min while i enjoy my cappuccino.

Beautiful decor, a lot of artwork on the walls. It's a very artsy place. Loved the bicycle! The staff is very friendly and efficient. We drank coffee and we thoroughly enjoyed the nice environment. The coffee was great too. Loved the ambiance.

We are visiting Johannesburg and stopped for coffee at City Perk Cafe. What a delightful experience! The lattes we had were delicious. The snacks and food selection was great and also, delicious. It is a family owned business and we met Jacquie, who owns it with her husband, Alexi. You can get coffee and food from an outside counter or sit in their lovely cafe filled with beautiful artwork from local artists. It touched my heart that Jacqui and Alexi invited several shop owners, whose businesses had been hurt during Covid, to set up tables outside the cafe to sell their lovely products. Jacqui’s passion for her cafe and for the local community was evident. All in all, stopping at City Perk Cafe turned out to be a joyful and very unexpected experience!

Always a great experience when having a meal here. From the food to the service. I always forget to take a pic of my meal because it looks so good and I just want to dig in when it's in front of me. My favourite breakfast is the Norwegian salmon and poached eggs on a toasted english muffin, with the delicious hollandaise dressing...highly recommended

As a artist/consultant, I love coming here to relax and have my morning Chai tea 🍵. Very relaxing, with beautiful canvases available to be bought by walk-in clients. This place is the best for it's gastronomy and artistic features. The food tastes great and you will always leave with a smile ☺️ due to the beautiful environment and reception. I would highly recommend it 🙌🏾😉.

A beautiful space to reconnect with the spirit of old Joburg.

Discovered the cafe near my school, and I have never stopped going there ever since. The food is REALLY amazing, and their desserts such as the carrot cake is a must have, the service is good, with the kind of hospitality that you would expect at a high tier restaurant, with friendly staff.

Delicious, healthy and fresh food! The servers are friendly. I was dining alone and they brought me magazines to read which was a nice touch. They don’t have wifi, however. I did the free walking tour from here, which I would highly recommend!

Hands down, one of the best restaurants in downtown. Jacky and Alexi are absolutely amazing and always willing to go the extra mile in offering excellent and efficient service to customers. Food is delicious and made fresh to order. Service at the 'window' is absolutely great and done with lots of smiles and kindness. Definitely worth a visit should you be in Marshalltown, Johannesburg. The pop-up shops which support black, young entrepreneurs are such a brilliant initiative!

Quaint little grab-n-go coffee shop that have a decent variety of coffees and teas. Muffins and sandwiches are spread at the takeaway window which makes for a New York style shop. Coffees are good quality but can be expensive. Love the name, quality and convenience.

Edit: returned for lunch and had a chat with the owners who explained why their coffee is priced the way it is. Nice, friendly people who seem to run their business quite well. Burger is decent too (ask for the home-made chilli sauce)!

First time visiting the joint. I wa not really sure on what to order so I went for an easy to prepare meal. Which was the Dagwood. It was too dry to consume, the asking price of 80 bucks is not really worth the dish. I will still give the joint another try, to try another dish. It probably wasn't the chef's good day.

Nice café in the Jozie CBD, one of the few places to get some decent food in the area. There is both an inside and outside seating areas, as well as a take away nook for those that want to eat on the go.

I had the toasted Chicken Mayo on Rye with a side salad. The chicken mayo wasn't over "mayo-ey" with the right ratio of chicken:mayo ; the rye bread is baked in-house and is delicious; and the salad was fresh and not overladen with lettuce, as most other establishments do. If you like a little bite to your food, ask for their in-house peri-peri sauce

The food didn't take long at all from when I ordered. The staff are very attentive, friendly and the service was great.

I haven't been back to City Perks since I moved out of town. I had wonderful memories here having many business discussions. I sadly fell into a dark space with the fallout from bipolar and from absolute desperation attempted suicide by jumping off Kloof gorge and falling 80m. God spared my life and has given me a 2nd chance with a renewed purpose. Walking past City Perks Cafe felt so surreal. I popped inside and met the wonderful and radiant owner Jacqui and her co-owner and husband Alexi. What they have done with the venue is nothing short of amazing. The artwork inside is original and of an ethnic genre. Jacqui showcases the art of a local artist and the pieces are for sale. The art is rotated on a regular basis, thus supporting local employment. One of the waiters recognised me walking past on the street and invited me in. It's this personal touch which makes City Perks Cafe such a special place. Visit them and make an effort to say hello to Jacqui and Alexi. Having run a restaurant in the UK for 10 years they have what it takes to create a wonderful customer experience. Even through my bad times, City Perks always perked me up. All the very best Jacqui and Alexi ... see you again soon ... Julian

Chic and Cozy... I think the music had alot to do with the cozy part. Nothing like a blend of warm ambient music and good food to make you feel right at home and not in Johannesburg CBD. Nonetheless, a good place to go to for a break from the rush outside, that is the concrete jungle. The staff is great, the setting, the food. All you can ask for in a cafe!

Found myself in the CBD this week & came across this little "gem". On a lovely summer's day the outside seating area under umbrella's is lovely - & inside the seating is very cosy. Restrooms were spotless & staff friendly & attentive. Recently been taken over by a lovely young couple who were very eager to please & very friendly. A nice varied menu. Food was freshly made & good value for money. No problems with power outages as they have a generator. Coffee was good & made to your taste ( weak or strong ). Security does not appear to be a problem in this area with a guard visible on the square. Various artwork by local artists on the walls which are for sale is such a great idea & a great talking point. There is a take-away window on alongside the cafe which was extremely busy. Excellent for the office workers in the area. A bonus is that they are licensed to sell wine & spirits. Has a very cosmopolitan vibe.

Update:

Under new owners, City Perk has improved substantially. The staff are all friendly and eager to assist their customers (which was a problem before). The coffee has also improved remarkably, and City Perk is now my favourite place in the area to grab my cuppa.

The food is as good as ever. The menu has had a facelift, with a variety of new items having been added.

It has been evident to me (over multiple visits) that the new owners have been working hard on improving the quality of service at City Perk. It is really nice to be able to sit at the outside tables in the sun, the atmosphere is possibly the best you will find in the city.

The vast improvement has led me to update my review and rating. If you have been unhappy with City Perk in the past, I encourage you to give it another chance and witness the improvements for yourself.
