Review Nakamor Japanese Restaurant - Johannesburg

Seanan Wai
The old adage goes that if you see people of the same ethnic group enjoying the food, then it's really good. Cantonese style cuisine is the most well known of the Chinese cuisines as many of the immigrants world over, hail from Guangdong province. Here at Nakamori you will find great food representative of my ancestral home and of course sushi. Service is typically unobtrusive but warm and friendly and you are even encouraged to help yourself to the drinks fridge (if you're enjoying your sit down meal).

WAS recently introduced to this gem of a Chinese Cantonese cuisine restaurant. Food was very good. Wish I knew about it earlier. Special mention about the white cut chicken, chinese sausage rice and the Japanese silken tofu dishes. YUM

As the name suggest that it is a Japanese restaurant, it also caters for the traditional Cantonese cuisine. Been there twice and on both occasions the quality of food and service has been excellent. Well deserved 5 stars. That past Sunday we had an 8 course meal for 16 guests and we paid just on R3000. Please note that we did not order any alcohol so you might have to add on to the bill. The meal we had was soup, 2 prawn dishes, special fried chicken, egg plant hotpot, Mapo Tofu, special chinese sausage rice, veggies. Haven't tried their sushi but the dishes that went out looked good. Great family business, great food and service. Will be back.

We ate in. Decor is bare bones. Service was very prompt and food came out quickly, but we were the only ones being served at the time, apart from takeout deliveries. We both had sushi, and I’m pleased to report that the ingredients were very fresh and visually appealing. They have an alcohol license and a pretty well-stocked bar. Recommended for sushi (that’s all we had).

Food is exceptional. Best Chinese food in JHB. Noisy atmosphere from outside the building, but is not important. Really, food over powers all negative aspects. They just don't have porkbuns

Quaint little restaurant. Very friendly staff. Neat, tidy and nicely decorated. Menu for sushi and Chinese is excellent. Concise and comprehensive at the same time. Variety is just right. The sushi was super fresh and delicious. The Chinese food is just amazing. Delicious and generous portions.

This place is a hidden gem through and through. The sushi is always fresh with generous portions, the traditional Japanese meals is outstanding with quite a large variety. The ambiance is also very quiet and enjoyable. I love Nakamori so so much!

Well priced, good portions! The pic is the beef fried rice.

We have been to many sushi joints and this is by far the best Sushi we have had. Their freshness and authenticity sets them apart from even good sushi restaurants, hence it has become our new regular even though we were eating good sushi elsewhere before. The plus side is that they are reasonably priced in comparison to other places and their sushi rolls are not dainty, they are quite big. It's not a fancy place so don't expect it to be, but you will get good food and the owners have such a warm and welcoming energy and they are hands on.

Authentic Cantonese food, food comes out quick, we had 8 people and ordered 10 dishes. We were in and out in under two hours. Place looks old and needs a revamp, but food is decent.

The food is great but the customer service is a little dodgy and touch and go. But love it for takeout and not sit down

Really love this place, literally the best sushi and service you'll ever have. The sizes of their sushi pieces are crazy big so it's definitely worth the money spent.

This was our go to place but it’s declined. Very disappointed. Spring rolls were burnt on the outside, frozen on the inside. Dumplings were cold. Mains all came at different times so the table couldn’t eat together. You could send stuff back but you would need to find a waitress. And none are insight. The Mr D guys kept arriving and moaning about the lengthy wait time. They were sitting basically at the table. Not a good experience.

Sadly, Nakamori has recently changed its menu to be more similar to other Chinese takeaways in the area, they no longer specialise in Japanese food so dishes like most of the udon soups, teppanyaki, the nabemono and the donburi aren't available. They've still got one or two specialty items from the old menu, the sushi is still great value and well made and what I've tried of the new additions to the menu (the deep fried spicy pork ribs and the dumpling soup) are all good but it's a pity that there's no more Japanese food in the area.

What a fabulous find! Delicious fresh sushi, and other yummy things, at really great prices made by friendly people. I wish I knew it was here sooner!

I love this place. The sushi is always ultra fresh and almost stupidly affordable. So affordable that I refuse to go anywhere else. The venue is a little quiet for my taste, so I tend to preference ordering my food to go. So if you're looking to drag a bucket-load of sushi back home for a movie night, I couldn't recommend these guys higher.

We visited Nakamori for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was quiet and so we were attended to quickly.

We ordered the Yaki Udon, Unadon (Eel Donburi), and the Salmon California Rolls.

The Yaki Udon was a good portion size, but extremely bland in flavour. There wasn't much chicken and the somewhat shredded chicken pieces were dry and tough. All-in-all, the Yaki Udon just tasted of plain Udon noodles.

The Unadon was very generous in rice, and the eel was of an acceptable ratio (a bit more to eat with all that rice would be great!). The eel itself was flavourful, soft, and mostly enjoyed aside from having to sift through all the bones with each chew.

The sushi was decent, the rice to salmon ratio was good, and the salmon was fresh.

The pricing here is very affordable, but the food is very average.

Their prices are ridiculous!!! I almost feel bad for paying so little 😲 but I'm not complaining! The sushi is SO fresh, and their portions are nice and big! The fashion sandwiches are HUGE! And could do with a little bit more salmon.. but it was still great! Lovely spring rolls as well! And of course....delicious Sashimi that didn't cost an arm and a leg 😉

Prices are incredibly cheap- I dont think they'e changed in the last 5 years. Sushi is mediocre but hits the spot- cant complain for those prices (R36 for 8 california rolls!), chinese food is not recommended- sashimi is always amazing. Great for takeaway- miso soup, dumplings, sashimi, fillet steak and veg

Nakamori is an absolute hidden gem. It doesn't look great from the outside - the sign is old and faded, the wooden tables inside and out are plain and the ambiance in general leaves quite a bit to be desired. However, if you are looking for excellent Japanese food at a truly amazing price, you can't get much better than this.My husband and I went for dinner, and we started with sushi. The tempura california roll and eel maki were excellent - fresh ingredients, well made and very generous with the good stuff (as compared to some sushi places that give mostly rice with a touch of the fish/filling). We went on to have Chicken Yakitori that was tender and full of flavor. For a main, I had the tempura udon which was a huge portion and beautifully prepared and presented, while he had the katsudon donburi, which he said was also delicious and looked beautiful in the box it was presented in.All that food (we were stuffed), plus a couple beers and a cool drink came to just under R300. Highly recommend for anyone who wants REAL Japanese food (instead of Chinese food and sushi like some restaurants). We will definitely be going there again soon.

Used to be one of the places with the best sushi in the area. Sadly not the case any more. When you go to a sushi restaurant you expect at least the person making the sushi to be Asian. This is not the case any more. Sushi fell apart when you touched it. Rice was dry and tasteless. Pity. Won't be back

Very traditional and authentic Japanese food. This place doesn't serve Chinese food in addition to Japanese, as many Japanese (and Chinese) places in Johannesburg do. They stick to the classic Japanese cuisine. The sushi is fresh and of excellent quality and they make a range of traditional teppanyaki dishes. The authenticity of the food here is attested to by how many Japanese come to eat here---its always a good sign when an ethnic cuisine is supported by the ethnicity it represents. The prices are sensationally reasonable. My only criticism of this place is that the chairs are hard. But otherwise, come to Nakamori and enjoy Japanese food the way they enjoy it in Japan. So try it out; you might just find that it becomes your go-to place for sushi and the other culinary delights of Japan.

Great prices and huge portions, wow. Besides sushi and the usual stirfrys etc they also make great Teppanyaki. Cosy and small; but busy on a public holiday. My tempura prawn cali rolls and fashion sandwiches with a cool drink came to R98 - bargain, and took some home for dinner as well. Great little find in Fourways!

Aha! Sushi venue spotted just to my right!

Ordered my usual sashimi and roses and tried out dumplings and california rolls.

The sashimi slices were smaller than what I am used to but at R11 a slice it was a bargain. Salmon rolls scored poorly- they looked slightly embarrassed huddled on the side of my plate. Rather a let down when compared to their chubby Westrand counterparts....

The dumplings were not my favourite but my boy child wolfed them down and gave them the thumbs up.

Overall this was not one of my better choices.

One of those don't judge a book by it's cover types, appearance wise this place looks really bad but the food is good. Their special fried rice is usually what I order with fried beef or pork ... Haven't tried out their sushi but looks good too.

This is a hidden gem. The owners are awesome and the food is amazing. Try the tepienakki and the beef teriyaki. The tempura prawns are the best and the liquor is reasonably priced. All round a great place to eat at. The sushi is great.

Only negative is we waited a while for the food, but well worth the wait. Really tasty food, loved it. Very fresh ingredients and awesome sushi
Jacqui Oeschger
The restaurant isn't much to look at but that's not the reason you're going to eat here. It's fresh, honest, tasty, and CHEAP Japanese food. I'd recommend the Teppanyaki and the Sushi. If you go for the set menu you'll definitely get your money's worth. The drinks are also reasonably priced so you won't break the bank on a night out here. Great! Especially if you're on a budget. Give them a try

Many conflicting reviews so i decided to give Nakamori a try and find out for myself. Not the best location - across from Mcdonalds and a little down the way from some sort of car shop. The interior is quaint. I would describe the sushi as average - the appearance was a little sloppy however it tasted good. Take note that their actual prices and those listed on Zomato differ.

This unpretentious neighborhood restaurant is a gem. We've been coming to Nakamori for the last five years and it remains a favourite. The sushi is possibly the best in Jozi but don't stop there, do yourself a favour and order the chicken teriyaki rice, it's delicious! Steamed dumplings are also very good.
Joyce Keung
The food is really amazing and is way cheaper than other sushi places (like the one in cedar square). Their food is really filling and is really fresh as they are made only when you order it unlike other ones.
Definitely recommend it!

Had I written this a year ago, my review would've been raving.
Now, not so much, and im so disappointed. I haven't tasted such awful sushi in a long time. The portions are great - but mostly rice. And the rice just falls apart. The sushi is messy, the fish not fresh and the rice either dry or far too 'gooey'.
Certainly won't be eating here again.
Crystal Andrews
Their sushi is always fresh and tastes so yummy. I always get take away from them. Yes it may not look like much but they are always friendly and helpful.

Probably not the best looking venue around, but the food it amazing. We had Sushi and Tepanyaki. The service is shocking and the wine selection non-existent, but will be back for more...
Shelley Burt
This is a great sushi restaurant. The area is not great and the restaurant doesn't look like much from outside or inside but the food is good. Having had both sushi and cooked food I can recommend either, the only problem might be understanding what some of the cooked food is and it can also be difficult to find out from the waiters as English is not their first language. Having said that the quality of food is good and the price is excellent. Defiantly worth a visit if you are in the area. They also do take-aways, which is great for a night in.

Food is amazing!!! Not the fanciest place around, but the food more than makes up for it. Great value for money as well, unlike some other over priced places where the food doesn't justify the price at all, which is why I give them a 5!

A relatively unknown Japanese restaurant that serves really superb food. The sushi is good and I had the Nabeyaki Udon that was simply out of this world.
