Review The Artisan - Johannesburg

D. K.
Great place to chill... Loved the music and awesome crowd. Food was great. Service was slow but drinks made up for the wait. Good vibe to have a nice time.
Nonjabulo Malinga
A very cozy place for a dinner date, or drinks with friends. The vegetarian platter was the only vegetarian option. The music was very loud for most of my time there. My date and I couldn't hear each other that well. The drinks were great, probably the best part about the evening.
Koketso Manku
Good customer service and tasty food. The restaurant have a hookah pipes for hire on the spot.

I’m Too impressed.💯🥰🫶🏼❤️Khona when we had to play 30seconds❤️lovely Thank you
Bheka Mchunu
Always chilled. Nice music. Friendly staff.. But most importantly.. Tasty food
Calvin Pillay
My favorite place in Greenside for lazy Sunday afternoon cocktails. They also usually have great drinks specials.
Tim Musto
One dirty olive Martini and one Fresh ;) - both made beautifully and presented with flair. The bar is wonderful and the staff very attentive. We had a lovely time and can highly recommend the potato skins as a little side snack. No wine tastings here and they were a little slow to get back to us from the online message but a great visit and we are sure to be back. Ps check if they have specials on the drinks between 5-7. We only heard about the specials afterwards
Kgosi
Great place bar with some very unique decor. Nice and quiet for some Sunday drinks. The place does look small from the front however there is ample room for you and a couple of friends upstairs and at the back.
Claira Cain
Varied menu of tasty tapas items washed down with wonderful cocktails and pretty gins. Best suited to a leisurely meal as service can be a bit slow.
Yamkela Mpongwana
A beautiful place, great view. An awesome chilled afternoon I had there.
Mark Neumann
Attention to detail is impeccable and hands down the best spaghetti bolognaise ever. My favorite meal so super critical. Great food, great music, friendly staff, super clean and my company the best (My Wife) 👊🏼👊🏼
Tertia Dippenaar
Great Tapas style food. There are plenty of vegetarian options & great cocktails. The upstairs view is great for sundowners. A beautiful hideout in the heart of Greenside.
Ellen Dirks
Thoroughly enjoyed my lunch today! We decided to have a selection of tapas and were not disappointed by any of the selections (stuffed jalapenos, chicken wings, croquettes and potatoe skins). Also really enjoyed the cocktails! The mild discomfort of only having bar stools to sit on up stairs was far outweighed by the lovely view and cool spring breezes of a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Happy to return and sample other offerings on the cocktail and food menu.
Ruth Edwards
Great cocktail selection and I looooved the bacon wrapped cheesy jalapeño poppers.

Prices are Very student friendly! Waiters and waitresses are very friendly and available at all times. Love the shooters as well
Richard Sutcliffe
Very trendy spot where beautiful people and musicians drink cocktails. Music is excellent, although the venue is really too small for bands, there is just not enough space for dancers, waiters, seated customers to fit in. The fries were excellent, the veggie prego is just a prego with the meat removed, literally just bread and tomato relish. The waiter says the burger is better. Basically a miniature version of hells kitchen for the beautiful people . Good craft beer selection.
Xolani Sticcah Sitemela
Friendly staff, good vibe even though the place is too small and those big table make it worse. Nice place to chill!!!

New spot alert!!!... loved the food... the cocktails are insane.. I loved the atmosphere.. did I mention the live music??!!!. Definitely the coolest place in town.
Jaen Fourie
Pleasantly surprized. Nice place toj ust sit and enjoy a nice beer on the top deck. Friendly staff.
Melissa Bennett
The Artisan has the best food and very friendly, helpful staff. I love going there to relax and have their famous gin and tonics
Lauren Colin Mitchell
By far the BEST vegetarian burger I've ever had! Also, always the best vibe.
Barto Pienaar
best place to get a beer, whisky and nachos. very nice vibe and good service. A must see!
Sindisiwe Sokhela
Its jst the place to b..very classy inspiring nd good music
Ricardo Matthee
Best cocktails and sundowner spot and friendly team .........been doing it for 4 years, going for 5! Reminds me of that old sitcom, Cheers, where everybody knows your name 😁
Kelsey Dobie
Great dorito chili poppers, amazing vibes mad the best gin👌🏻
Ivor Swartz
Great up and coming gourmet sandwich spot. Portions are great. Staff is super friendly. Great little backyard garden. You should come.
Dan Apter
Josh Groban likes his ladies to pop, and let me tell you the Artisan pops. Therefore I do believe Josh groban would bring his ladies to the Artisan, you should do the same. In the words of magnitude: Pop Pop.
Lain Glossop
The Nachos are pretty tasty and the beer selection is awesome.
Alexander Bosman
If the James Blunt came to Greenside, he would dine here.
Puleng
great presents of food. Rustic but modern feel to the venue. Spacious and accommodating stuff. Sparkling clean and in a vibrant location.
Deepa Lala
Unfortunately Zomato does not go lower then 1. Starters - we were told they had no mushrooms or potatoes as per the menue so second choice, three tiny pieces of burnt halloumi. Mains. Small old dry chicken schnitzel. Chickpeas from a can. Dessert - none pastries had gone off. Asked for icecream but they brought the bill instead. Heaters had no gas. Do not serve any warm beverages. Could not pay the bill as card machines do not work. In short simply the worst in Greenside!
Janine Janse Van Rensburg
Yum, yum, yummy ! Enjoyed refreshing cocktails and tapas on their second floor, accompanied by a soft breeze cooling us down. It was needed. Because if I remember correctly there was a cocktail with, yes, a chili in it.
Samkelo Sabela
I was there on a Saturday night for drinks, walked into a rather empty place but I guess that was because most people decide to sit upstairs. What we had first was a jug that supposedly had bourbon in it, my take on the jug was that it had way too much ice you could barely taste the cocktail.

We then ordered nachos and our next round of drinks, both took forever and a day to get to us, seeing that the place wasn't full. The cocktails are very innovative and taste good too. The nachos arrived cold and they basically put everything on a plate just with the guacamole on the side, the chicken in the nachos was not tasty at all.

To top it all off the service was very bad, it seems like the employees don't care. We waited so long for the bill that we just decided to go pay downstairs and when we got downstairs another customer was complaining about the service.
Anny B
Super chilled spot, kinda place I like to go hide away in when I feel like a chilled Friday night out. I haven’t tried many of the dishes, but the nachos are to die for. Whether be it for take away or eat in, when I crave nachos the artisan is my first stop. Both their classic and creative cocktails are pretty good.
Saul Ben Smith
The artisan is a typical greenside spot that has a silly layout, its a long deep venue thats half bar and half eatery. The decor is kinda nondescript and the menu is generic.
We had 4 tapas:
pistos and bruschetta- maybe more bruschetta wouldn't go amiss, but the stuff was very tasty.
Poppers_-standard but a bit better cos the batter didn't fall off.
Cheesy crusty balls-yeah ok
Halloumi. I dono. Never got to try it cos its 3 pieces.
Mains- i asked for a beef prego and salad. I got a prego and chips, a micro salad followed after i was done. I dono about this prego. It was a thick steak for a prego, not tenderised, cooked to oblivion, how do you even get it so hot all the way through? I suspect microwave or boilednin a bag.
The bun, like the armpit of a dude forced to sit in the front row of a john vlismas show, was wet and sweaty, And like any elected official a few hours after being elected, had a complete breakdown of integrity.
Good chips though.
Dessert was fine. Nothing great. The ice cream was cheap.

Would i go back? For a beer and a snack? Well no, cos it didn't click, the food was lacklustre, the beer was expensive, and the seating feels cramped.
Michaela
Great place to hang out and grab a delicious bite to eat. Great cocktails and atmosphere, service is always good. This is the first place I recommend to friends when they want to go out somewhere, and they always enjoy it.
Aimee Elizabeth Clarke
Food is delicious, well priced, and consistent. Their house wine is a very fair price - there are few places where you can get a botttle under R100, and its not plonk.

Very friendly staff and management :) and decor keeps getting better.

Recommend the cajun chicken burger, and nachos!!
Deepesh Nagar
Great food wish they offered alot of the old menu.... Stopped doing alot of the awesome stuff. Great service always getting it right please offer more
Tamara Reddy
Visited The Artisan last weekend for lunch. We were seated and after 5 minutes ordered our drinks.

Great craft beer and cocktail options - you definitely have an array to choose from. I had the Pink Pather cocktail which was so yum, and my husband had the CBC craft beer.

Both my husband and I order the crumbed chicken burger and chips. Their chips are garnished with balsamic vinegar, which I absolutely love. Their burgers were well prepared and full of flavour.

Service was good and while it was wasn't very busy, I enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant.
Leray Larry Mar'letsè
Not variety when it comes to the food menu, but they do have some good a** burgers.
The music is also dope and really sets the mood.

The one thing that just really puts me off this place is the service. They aren’t attentive at all. Management should really look into this. Maybe a waiters station up here and a designated waiter for just the upstairs area would help.
Scott Murray
Great spot for cocktails, ask for the barmans special, it's always interesting and a great way to try a new cocktail. Food is food, the chilli poppers are a hit. Get a spot upstairs and take in the view of joburg from the balcony.
Bianca
What a great view and lovely setup. It’s a pity wasn’t a good experience at all. Bad service and attitude from the waiter. Nachos without guacamole and some excuse for sour cream.
Gautam Rao
Pretty good place for a social gathering. could do with more space. The drinks and food are served very well and lots of interesting choices to pick from.
Mari Labuschagne
Great selection of cocktails, with a very inviting atmosphere. Really friendly staff and all round good service. Definitely a good good choice if you want to meet up for a chilled drink
Shanice Gounden
The Artisan is one of my favourite places to grab a drink and some good food. The staff are very welcoming, plus they're pet friendly too. Whether you're just grabbing a drink with a friend or playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons, this place caters for everyone. It's a cozy place with great views on the top floor. There is a decent food selection, with my personal favourite being the chicken strips with chips. The chips are served with a balsamic sauce, which I love, but may be an acquired taste. The gin cocktails and the ginger beer are always good!
Mamokete Tsholo
First of all lets talk about how amazing the decor there is. I loved it, creats a great ambiance. Stayed for just a beer because I was waiting to pick up someone. I need to go back to taste the food, the burgers looked yummy.

Went for breakfast on Saturday morning. I had a cortado, which was quite good.
I also had a breakfast roll, which was very tasty and reasonably priced.
Decor inside is cool.
Carole Craggs
Hubby and I had a pleasant evening supper and drink here courtesy of The Entertainer, while listening to the sultry tones of Jack Johnson. The food is good, trendy ambience and next time I think I'll take the kids and make use of the board game selection.
Ilan Ben-David
Definitely worth going to for cocktails and drinks with a good vibe. Food however was a bit of a let down. The French fries came with balsamic on them which made for a strange flavour profile. The Doritos covered chicken strips were alright but nothing fantastic, and the nachos were also fairly soggy and plain. Food was tasty but far from delicious and not on the same level as some of the other restaurants in the area .
Preshinaedenmanthiri
Cool vibe for sundowners however the drinks were slightly watered down during their 5-7 happy hour. Food is mediocre. Nachos were cold and soggy when they arrived.
Tsepiso Mbali
I've heard about the Artisan a few times so it has been on my list of places to grab a meal. The place smaller then I imaged. It has an outside area and seating available upstairs. Unfortunately we couldn't go upstairs because there was a private event and it was far too cold to sit outside. The artisan has a welcoming atmosphere. I was starving and couldn't decide between nachos and a burger. I ended up going for a burger. I'm really bad with names, but the burger I ordered had avo, handmade patty and bacon . It wasn't the best burger, but it wasn't terrible either. The fries had drizzled balsamic vinegar on them which put me off a bit because I am not a fan. It was a weird combination, but people around us seemed to like it so I'm guessing it is about preference or an acquired taste. I also ordered a Long Island ice tea. It was very well made. Not too strong or too weak. The Artisan seems like a great place for groups looking for chilled vibes.
Barto Pienaar
Really tasty, well prepaid food paired with interesting array of drinks to choose from. The menu might be fairly smaller but makes choosing a hell of a lot easier. I have to say the food seemed to have that little extra added for making it even more... The atmosphere ranges from a nice dining to even a well suited party place. Even though it might be a small place I found it to be cosy.. All and all a must to all who seeks a bit of a different vibe
Matt Swarts
Really nice bar. Great cocktails. Friendly team on duty but the service time is appalling. 20 mins from sitting down and only then did a waiter come speak to me.

Knew his stuff and all, just slow.
Pigsie
At the get go let me say that I I think they got ' blue collar' and 'artisan' confused . This is not Artisinal food . Not expensive , and not terrible , but they are taking a chance calling it Artisinal - trying to get s free ride on the current wave of interest in Artisinal beers Charcuterie etc . Steers serves a great burger , and that's what it is , just a great burger with no promise of exotic influence on its making . These guys should focus on just serving better food and forget the fluff., also give the place a deep clean .The cocktail menu looked amazing and going to come back and give it s whirl .
Diana Mak
I came here when Artisan had one of their events "First Thursdays" which was hosted my Dark Matter Marketing - arts for sale, Jazz live performance, free champagne upon walking in! It was great vibes! Hope to see more of this event happening again soon!
Jacques Wentzel
Quite a quaint place. Nice decor. Feels homey inside and the staff are really friendly. Not a bad selection of craft beers. I also noticed that they keep a selection of board games on hand if you're into that kind of thing.
Daniel Wiggill
The artisan has come long way since its opening. Owners have showed serious grow since their gin days.
And the menu has developed with them .
This is a great joint for post work snacks and drinks.
Yet also works for a relaxed date night.
Portion sizes are great and the food is amazing value for money.

One of the better stops on the Greenside strip
Shelby Downey
Throughly enjoyed myself. Manager and staff are so friendly and the food was to delicious 🙌🏼 really recommend The Artisan anyone who wants a chilled and vibrant place to go
Smelly Celly
From the little bit of experience I had here I was impressed. From the nice selection of craft beers, cocktails and whiskeys to the nice ambience inside. I enjoyed my Peppermint Crisp cocktail. I look forward to trying some food next time. And their gin jars!
Akira Wing
We went through to Greenside for pre-drinks and I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Artisan had a happy hour until 6pm.

We sat downstairs, but I have previously sat upstairs and the ambience is much nicer there. The service was kinda slow.

We ordered a couple of cocktails which weren't bad, some were a bit too sickly sweet but the Long Island was a winner. We decided to get some nibbles and ordered Chilli Poppers and Halloumi. The halloumi was tasty, and the chilli Poppers were nice and cheesy but not the best I've ever had.

It's definitely an awesome spot to grab a few Friday drinks, we'll most likely be back in the near future.
Jill Nudelman
Absolutely no ambience. Service was unprofessional and indifferent. It seemed like the waitress just forgot to come and take our order. The food was uninspiring to say the least. Salad was tasteless and the Greek Bowl Platter was a joke! Badly presented, thrown together little bits and pieces. At least serve it with pita bread. And charge more if you have to. No. I won't be going back.
Sarah Druce
Vibey little place in Greenside. The menu is quite limited, with tapas and burgers being the focus. I had the prego chicken roll, which was fairly standard, nothing to write home about. My friend had the jalapeño burger which was delicious with a dorito crumb on the chicken. You should go for something a little more exciting on the menu as opposed to my ordering the chicken prego. The cocktail menu is extensive, I would recommend this place as one to come to for drinks.
CandidMrsT
Went to The Artisan for a quick drink a week ago. My Mai Tai cocktail was delicious, and there was a decent wine selection. I must say, definitely the place to go for a cocktail, the cocktail selection is impressive!
Friends we were with ordered the chicken nachos and the potato skins, we nibbled on both, and both were really really good!!! Service was good, nothing spectacular, but nothing bad to say either! I've been to The Artisan a few times, and we'll definitely keep going back :)
Lieselgill
GREAT food! Unfortunately, really bad service 😕 will try again though just because the food was that delicious. Good selection of wine and craft beer
Matt Roos
Great spot. Went for the cocktail happy hour specials, which are well priced and have a great selection. Nachos are delicious and generous with ingredients. Overall a great a time.
Theresa Van Rooyen
Not a bad spot to relax and chill with friends. It has a nice vibe and is great for drinks and platters, the nachos however was average and lacked flavour.
Lauren Michelle Strydom
Unfortunately this was quite an average experience. A lot of menu items were discontinued and the few we ordered were really very average. Very small and slightly cramped. The one redeeming factor was the gin and craft tonic.
Jolene
An average spot in Greenside which I don't get particularly excited about. It's quite small so it can easily feel very cramped. The food is average, but I guess this is more a place for drinks.
Zaakirah Kay
Good beer. Great baristas. And grand food. All you need to bring is the good company. Other than that, The Artisan has no fault in my eyes. My favourite place is the balcony seating, although not the sunset view you'd traditionally have in mind, but the view of a bustling greenside street is magnificent too.
Carien Jakovljevic
Got quite a bad first impression as the first few things we tried to order was all out of stock. Eventually decided to order the chicken prego with chips and it was DELICIOUS! The prego sauce is the best I have had - the exact right amount of bite and spice, with a real fresh Portuguese bun. The chips were also excellent. Definitely exceeded expectations!
Alexandra Fincher
One of my absolute favourite places in the whole of Johannesburg!! Matt and Jon what ever you guys are doing keep up the good work!! I wish I could give you more than 5!
Janice Scheckter
I am really unsure how they achieved a 3.9 - a very simple lunch order in a very empty restaurant took 35 minutes! We both ordered beef kebabs which were smothered in some sauce that was not noted on the menu and were dry and tough as old takkies. I had specified - rare! A really poor meal.
Naomi De Carvalho
It's a charming spot for a quick, tasty bite and a drink. We started with the messy, delicious chicken nachos and followed that with a chicken trinchado and veggie burger for mains. The Trinchado was too salty for my taste but the rest was great. They have a small selection of craft beers on tap including CBC and mad giant. The food menu offers a wide variety of dishes ranging from nibbles to more substantial meals. We'll be back.
Ilovefood
Ordered three Chicken pregos and chips through Uber eats. Order arrived completely soggy and sloppy. Wet chips and mushy roll. Could have been tasty but for the polystyrene packaging. If you are going to do take away get the right packaging!!! Or don't bother.
Tam Loves Food
Delicious vegetarian burgers here, so thrilled that they are finally delivering through UberEats! The burgers are a generous portion and full of flavour. I'm not a big fan of their chips, I prefer kine to be slightly crunchier. Great spot to try though.
Jenny Louw
My first experience here, shortly after them opening was awful. I initially rated them a 2 as there weren't many non-alcoholic drinks available, there wasn't much for me to eat and the service was lacking so I basically sat waiting for everyone to finish their drink so that we can move on to the next place.

I wasn't happy being dragged here this weekend but I must say they have definitely improved. They now offer a wide variety of dishes including vegetarian options and they also have a huge selection of drinks, luckily including iced tea and juice.

I actually had already eaten so I just had some jalapeño poppers, they were pretty good and the price wasn't over the top. To drink I had a Bon-Bon which was delicious but I've never gone wrong with one. Everyone else was content with what they had and they loved the atmosphere.

The service was okay this time. Basically I won't be rushing back but now I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to come.
Joane Wessels
The Artisan has a relaxed vibe, even on busier nights, with beautiful wood decor, creative aspects across the venue and great events!

I especially love the drink & draw events aswell as boardgame nights. It's the perfect place to gather with friends and have a few drinks. Their drinks menu is vast and innovative. They also have quite a big whiskey variety to choose from (which is of course my favourite part).

I went on a chilly day but inside it was cosy and friendly. I had the Deluxe burger which is phenomenal! The cranberry and brie combo on a burger is just what I needed for some rainy day comfort!

I would recommend this place to anyone with a good whiskey taste & any potential foodies
Saiyuri
Came here for a Zomato Meetup with Fuze Tea - was a fun evening of board games and cocktails. We had a selection of the snacks and finger foods - there were chicken strips, halloumi, kebabs etc- the best of the lot were the potato skins and nachos! They have a really large selection of cocktails with interesting combinations that I would try out should I return.
Dilaksha
Most pathetic restaurant we've ever been to. The place was not busy however the food came two and a half hours later, was tasteless and the salad was not edible.
The SA Food Guru
This bar and restaurant is located on the popular Greenside strip. A variety of typical watering hole menu items are on offer... Burgers, platters, salads, sandwiches etc.
Naturally there is an enormous selection of drinks available - from wines to cocktails.

We shared some chicken nachos and other finger foods - the chicken kebabs were quite nice and their guacamole was good too.

The space itself is compact and simply decorated, with a uniquely carved silhouette behind the bar.

I'll be back for breakfast sometime...
Cane.ryan
#Kevfabfood and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambience at The Artisan restaurant in Greenside today. The sandwich sliders and balsamic vinegar chips were just delicious. They have very unique cocktails that everyone can enjoy. The decor of this place is also amazing. Give em a try.
Kevin Barrie Levy
Wow! KevFabFood can only but rave about this gem in Greenside. From the minute you walk into this small restaurant your breath is taken away by the fantastic interior design and fab art - waiters are attentive and very friendly - cocktails are sublime, can highly recommend their unique peach martini - the mini sliders are incredibly tasty and each one more phenomenal then the next - a tease explosion! Not to mention their balsamic vinegar chips - bravo to the team, bravo! Give it a try today - you will not be disappointed!
Francois Marais Van Zyl
The flavoured gin & socks put this place on the map.
Nice cocktails and craft beer on tap.
Food platters are delicious.
Cosy place on the Greenside strip to unwind.
Erin Starr
The artisan is always a great place to go for a coffee and some work. The upstairs balcony is the perfect combination of good music, sunshine and shade. Not only is it good to get some work done in the day but also to just meet up for a drink. The coffee also always comes at drinking temperature! What a great experience every time.
Varushka Padayachi
Nice vibe but can get pretty crowded. The drinks are really inventive and delicious, especially like the Dr Pepper cocktail. I've had lunch here before too and the meals were good but nothing special. I had the sundried tomato and mushroom chicken, I don't like the idea of putting balsamic vinegar on chips though, I don't think it adds anything and just makes the plate looks messy. Overall was not bad at all though.
ROBERT ELLIS
This didn't quite live up to expectations to be honest. We shared a few tapas/finger foods, and it wasn't extra special. The baked Camembert was good, the Jalapeño poppers were very average and the chicken strips weren't special either. It was a good social occasion and there are plenty good cocktails and drinks special, so if you are looking for a light meal and a socialise, it's a good spot with good service. But the food wasn't of the highest quality.
Sheryl
One of the best sunday lunches we're had in a while. The services was warm and friendly and one immediately felt welcomed. The upstairs seating is great, especially in the winter sun. The food was amazing, and the nachos was completely out of this world! We were surprised at how good the prices were for really top quality meals and drinks. A great hang out venue!
Gabriella C
Went there for a Drink and Draw. Very great atmosphere with amazing drinks and dishes.
Unfortunately the waitresses were slow and had to be called if you wanted to order anything. We were not served after arrival and had to call the waitress after she served the table next to us who arrived 15 minutes after we did.

Amazing jalapeño poppers and fettadew pops, the nachos were astounding.
The coffee cocktails were also stunning.
Sam
The Artisan is another Greenside hang out more suited to night time visits. I liked the decor which is quite unique.

The strawberry daiquiri tasted quite watered down and not how a daiquiri should taste at all.

The chicken burger wasn't bad except for it and the chips being drenched in balsamic. Something that isn't mentioned on the menu.

The nachos were good and seems to be there signature dish. Prices are decent but the menu is small with either burger/salad/sandwich to choose from.

Nikki Alice
The Artisan could be so much more. The inside seating is lovely, and can be rather lively, but outside, you sort of get forgotten about. The decor outside is also, very minimalistic - as in, there doesn't seem to be any decor - But maybe thats the look that they were going for.
For a venue that is known for their cocktails, I was rather disappointed, as the blender wasn't working, and none of the cocktails I wanted to try were available. (I don't know how a bar could only have one blender to make cocktails, but it seemed like the drinking gods didn't want me to enjoy anything that night). The food on the other hand, was okay, nothing too spectacular, but it was well presented.
Will try them out again, and hopefully be able to sample some of the cocktails, and try different things on the menu.
Megan Schoeman
Excellent food. Two delicious beef burgers -!9!3 with chips and delish balsamic glaze. The other had a decent side salad and LOTS of tasty caramel used onions as requested. Chilled atmosphere and friendly service. What an absolute pleasure. We'll be back for the birthday celebrations and cocktails!
Pam Lourenco
The artisan is a nice meeting place nook in green side . Recently attended a birthday party. We all had separate bills and the waitress handled this with the greatest of ease. We were all so surprised how accurate all of our split bills were! The food is good, but not great. Little things like the Jalepeno poppers were not spicy and the cheese inside was a little cold.
I had the beef burger which was great, barring the bun, which was un-toasted and so soft, it got really soggy in the end. There were highlights though! Their coffee is absolutely A1. Robust and flavorful. Their signature Turkish delight shooter is everything your dreams are made of.
Janice Kelvin Leibowitz
Great little place on the main strip of Greenside. Varied menu and a brilliant concept of being able to make up your own platters to share. Fantastic value for your money and you get to taste loads of their delicious offerings too! Highly recommend the halloumi (out of this world), beef ribs and...
Brooke
A cool bistro in the greenside area with usually dishes and a diverse drinks menu.

My husband and I were keen for an early lunch and decided to try out the artisan. I loved the style of he space and how to was set out.

We had the Bon-Bon coffee, which was a treat for sure. It is layered first with a bit of condensed milk, espresso and then foam on top. It was balanced and not too sweet.
We decided to eat something small and shared to different types of nacho plates that seemed to be a big seller. It was a good size portion and just the rift amount of ingredient. They were not greasy or overdone with cheese, which I usually find.

The rest of the menu didn't really stand out to me as it was a bit generic. But from what we had, the food has good quality. They also have quite a creative drinks menu which is always a plus for me.

I will for sure be back even if just for a coffee, or to experiment with the rest of the menu.
Calvin Scully
I planned a birthday party for visiting colleagues from Melbourne... Not the best idea I've had 😳... The restaurant or bar rather, is clean and the staff friendly... The service is efficient - ask for Pride, she was our waitress... The food selection is great but the presentation isn't... Our wine had corked and the birthday cake was raw... The wine and cake were taken off the bill and the management were great & accommodating to all our requests... If you are in the mood for a noisy, boozy, club adjacent evening, then The Artisan is your place...
B2C Eats
Really great spot on the Greenside strip. Newly renovated, and clean yet funky decor. They have an amazing selection of 'craft' cocktails all at a reasonable price, and a decent drinks menu otherwise. Although the menu is not extensive, everything I have eaten there thus far has been excellent. I would highly recommend going and experiencing for yourself. On a side note, there is a great view from their upstairs 'bar' counters for sun-downers.
Chante Daries
Definitely the best nachos in town. Sometimes a little bit too spicy but still delicious. They also serve my favorite ciders. Very nice place.
Carla
The Nachos and Cream Ale were so good that I logged into Zomato from my girlfriends phone to write a review, which in my opinion deserves 10 stars rather than 5! Such a cool vibe with awesome decor, a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff made for a great evening out.

It finally seems like Greenside has found what it was missing!

Meagan Whitehorn
Cool trendy spot right on the Greenside strip. More of a drinks style place with limited food menu. My husband had the Burger which he said was very good. There are not too many original vegetarian options other than a selection of side plates and salads. I had the artichokes and Halloumi which were OK.

Loacated in the vibey green side a really small place with OK food, terrible service that sums up my experience at the artisan, so after reading a few reviews on zamato I decided to give this place a try and boy was I disappointed so we get there and ask for a table upstairs we spend about half an hour trying to get a waiter to take our drink order and there were other customers who were screaming at each other while they had a conversation so we moved downstairs to a little more reserved part of the restaurant and we then begged for a waiter to take our order this happen through out the night and this place was not busy we had a few plates of jalapeño popers and some other stuff and I ordered a prego steak roll that supposedly came with cheddar but I got normal gouda it was one of the worst services I have received will not be going back there in the future advice to the owner please train your staff members to pay attention to their customers and not while taking an order see to other customers as he had taken our order for the same thing about 5 times it is very frustrating trying to get hold of the waiter and then losing his attention to someone else, also please make sure your kitchen serves what is on the menu and if they are out of the product to inform the customer before making their own decisions on what to add the meal

Great place, great music, decent service and good beer on tap. But that's where it ends. The meals are tiny and well not worth the prices. The prego steak patty is less than 5mm thick. Picture attached.

With such a vast choice available in the Linden and Greenside areas, it's still hard to find something that stands out.
The decor and feel of the place lends itself to a positive feel from the onset.
The service is great.
The Craft selection is fair.
The food is true Artisan and I will return to try out way more menu choices.
Will also be sharing this location with my mates.

Went to the artisan on Saturday night for a pre valentines dinner. Was very impressed overall feel of the place and the burgers were great. They just need to add dessert to the menu to top off a great meal.

Awesome up on what was here before! (Not that one should be reviewed on the sin's of what went before), just so nice to have this beautiful improvement on the strip. Cosy and quaint. Beautiful interior, decor, furniture.
Mainly went for a quick drink, was after the rush hour, and if you lucky enough to get a spot up straits against the front railing and you spoilt for an awesome lookout points, all the better.
Ended up having a quick bite as a snack also which was nice and fresh. Great menu though, craft beers, cocktails...
Only reason I cannot rate higher as wasn't a full visit, but sure to return soon. But on location and just being a really cool spot, an awesome start.

Pretty wicked selection of cocktails which were half price until 7 and decent craft beer selection on tap. The salads we had were really yummy so no complaints! Nice view from the balcony (of the street but hey, we're in Jhb, that is a good view right haha) and a intimate set up. Good place for a drinks date or meet up with friends.

The Artisan is a great new spot along the Greenside strip. The restaurant has a really interesting vibe to it with some extraordinary decor including hand made wooden furniture as well as an exceptional concrete mural that has been sculpted into the wall behind the bar.

The staff are all very friendly and the service is really great even on more busier weekend days. Aside from one or two hiccups, every time I've been here the staff have been on point and are always smiling and willing to help.

As for the food, the Artisan boasts a versatile menu covering cuisines from all walks of life and even offer meals for the carb conscious too. They also have a diverse selection of craft beers and some really interesting and tasty cocktails too.

I have sampled pretty much everything that they have to offer and have enjoyed every meal. I would highly recommend their chicken nachos and am also a big fan of their platters which sport a variety of delicious bites including chicken strips and fried potato skins. When it comes to picking something to quench your thirst you can't go wrong with the Fransen Street Irish Red Ale or the Old Fashioned cocktail if you're feeling festive.

The Artisan is definitely the place to go in Greenside when looking for a well crafted, reasonably priced and great tasting meal. The restaurant has a great vibe complimented by unique decor and awesome music which makes for the perfect spot for a meal with family or some after work drinks with friends.

I luv the Artisan...mainly for it's location & vibe. They make a good beef burger too and lovely skinny fries. Service has been good but it can get a bit cramped inside.

Was looking for a different place for lunch and loved the look of the menu. Not run of the mill! Was a bit hard to find on the greenstone strip and when we found it, it was so quiet we almost went elsewhere! It was the holiday period so that might be why. It is a really small place - sit upstairs there is a good view of the suburb. The food was average, the prego has a good flavor but it is really thin and the salad was okay. They also didn't have a few of the craft beers on the menu. Think it's more a drinks place so go for that.

The Artisan is my happy place ♡ Delicious food (Nachos are divine). Cocktails are unique, quite strong but i'm not complaining :) What a vibe! Friendly, efficient staff. Definitly going back.

The Artisan is a small restaurant that you can easily miss when you walk by in the busy Greenside area. The restaurant itself is also always busy and has a nice trendy vibe. We decided to check in for a lunch when it was more quiet.

Ambiance: The restaurant has a trendy feel. It is small and intimate, and what I really liked was the tables and wooden underplates that were branded. I think it will be nice if they take it even further with the plates, serviettes, and glases also.

Menu: This restaurant offers an extensive cocktail menu. Their food menu is a small menu, but caters for everyone's taste with interesting combinations.

Food: I had a butternut salad with cranberries and chicken. It was divine! It was very fresh, and it tasted like every ingredient was individually prepared and then mixed together to create a great combination in every bite.

Service: The service was good, waitress friendly, and management was on board all the time.

It is really worth a try!

Loved the vibe and menu. Great place to go with friends or have a chilled business meeting. Highly recommend the med veg sandwich and craft beer on tap :)

I've been wanting to visit The Artisan for a while. It fits in perfectly on the strip of Greenside restaurants. The service was a bit slow but our waiter was friendly. The cocktail list is great and I had the peppermint cocktail and my sister had the Dr Pepper cocktail, both were good. My cocktail took 20 minutes to arrive because they didn't have ice.

To eat I had the caprese sandwich which was fresh and tasted really good. The chips are served with a nice dressing. My friends had the chicken breast and felt it was good but not memorable. They also didn't have sweet potatoes so my friend could not get sweet mash potatoes. The presentation of the food is great.

Overall its a trendy spot and worth visiting. Would love to go back to try the veg burger.

The best nachos in the history of nachos existence!!!! Wow! Friendly staff, great drinks. Will be back often! Thursdays specials sound great!

The Artisan popped up on my radar when I saw their "Nacho Average Thursday" special and I had to try it out! The Artisan on Gleneagles specialise in designer sandwiches, nachos, coffee and cocktails (with some wine and beer options too).

I find the drinks menu quite deceptive in that it doesn't state, for example, in the Champagne section whether it is by the glass or by the bottle and the prices, (when we found out were by the 'glass') are on the steep side (MENU pic attached). Apparently, you don't seem to be able to buy champagne by the bottle as it isn't listed.

Anyway, on a Thursday for only R150, you get a plate of cheesy nachos with a choice of chicken, beef or bacon AND.. (yes, thats not all) a bottle of wine of your choice from the menu! For the beer drinkers, you can choose a bucket of beers instead of the wine.

Update 12 April 2016: Tried out the spicy beef trinchado last night in this cold weather and found the beef quite chewy/tough but also, after ordering the 'FULL' portion, I was not all that impressed with the size of this dish for what I was paying.

The nachos still are excellent value-for-money though, and particularly the chicken nachos (which is a signature dish) so you cannot go wrong with a plate of these. Great portions, good toppings and my only gripe would be that I would have loved a bigger guacamole portion.

*Recommendation: This nacho special starts after the lunchtime rush on a Thursday and continues until 8pm. It really is an awesome special and I would highly recommend using it as an excuse to try this spot out and do something different on a Thursday (on a budget). Make sure you choose their signature CHICKEN nachos rather than the other options.

Wandering into the venue formerly known as Gin at a respectable hour on a Sunday is more than a little surreal. The Artisan is a far cry from its predecessor, and all the better for it. For a quiet Sunday afternoon late lunch with just the right amount of fun and a very welcome cocktail special, this is a great choice. Fellow vegetarians will be happy to know that each meal has an equally delicious, well thought-out vegetarian counterpart, something one rarely sees in Johannesburg. I was not expecting a gem, but really happy to find one. To top it all, the service was fantastic. This is a must visit.

If you knew The Artisan when it was still Gin you'll recognize the lovely evolution. What a great change. The organic decor makes for a great atmosphere and its great to end the day at the top floor overlooking green side and the surrounding suburbs. They have the best nachos in town. I've really never considered ordering anything else because they are so good. The price is also good as I spend R200 for a table of two.

I met a friend at The Artisan for a few drinks and was immediately impressed with the venue and feel of the place. I was however very disappointed that out of their range of craft beers offered on tap - only three were available. We had a few drinks and the staff were friendly and helpful. We did not eat but will definitely be back to sample the food and hopefully their full range of tap craft.

We came here for a friends surprise birthday dinner and had a table upstairs. It was a lovely warm evening so it was perfect to be on the balcony. The service was a bit slow, I think our waitress was a little overwhelmed.

We got there in time for half price cocktails, beware they are quite strong! We ordered the chicken nachos and beef burger to share, these were both delicious. The nachos had a slight bite and had generous toppings. The food along with our half priced cocktails, made for a very reasonably priced meal. We will definitely be back!
Artisan is the perfect food/drink spot for a chilled sunny afternoon.

We were there when they hosted an event on a Sunday afternoon - there was great music, super chilled out and relaxed vibe and delicious food. The service was good, we even got some yummy shooters on the house just because :)

There are a lot of drinks to choose from (yep, Greenside!). However, the food selection is limited to three main categories on the menu: sandwich, burger and nachos (oh and salad). We had the fillet sandwich and veg burger - both were good. I especially like the chutney and caramalised onion. The side salad has a generous portion and were very fresh. I like the handcrafted art-sy presentation, it goes well with their quirky theme.

Bottomline: I like this place. I'll sit upstairs next time.

Pros: Great vibe, good food, lots of drinks options
Cons: I can't think of any.. (?!)

Love the Artisan. Have been twice and both times the service has been spot on. Food is great and good value for money! Love the vibe and friendly waiters.

Always greeted warmly here, prompt service and polite staff! Oh and of course, I return every time for the food - especially the quinoa and cranberry salad (add chicken!!). YUM. Don't miss the upstairs patio for a relaxing lunch or great spot to hang out with friends over a drink.

Great vibe with really good food and service. As the place looks more like a Nightlife/drinks type of bar I was really amazed by the quality and value of food they serve. I really recommend trying it out :)

Came here with my family on a sunny Sunday afternoon for some nachos and a few drinks. There was live music which made it super viby. The food was delicious and certainly very unique, I can almost guarantee that you won't find better nachos than at The Artisan. However, the kitchen was very slow and my dad waited over an hour for his salad starter.

This is definitely not a regular occurrence as the service has always been really efficient in my previous visits.

Be sure to try their mouthwatering potato skins, its simply the best.

I am excited to try the new things that will soon be added to The Artisan menu.

Overall the food is exceptional, the restaurant has a great vibe and friendly staff.

Visited the Artisan for Friday lunch although it was very quiet it was absolutely brilliant. The view from upstairs is quite relaxing and the food and service was equally efficient. Their homemade chips are a favorite. However they serve a brewed ice tea which was too pungent and prune like tasting. Other then the ice tea, I would be back for sure!!

Just had an amazing lunch here. Absolutely loved the vibe and the view. The waiters are friendly and the food is great. I had the chicken fillet with Brie and Cranberry and it really was a great combination of tastes. The ambience and decor is unique. I'd definitely return.

It's back to basics, but it's good. Love what they did to the place. Not overpriced and really delicious. What more do you want from a place that sells gourmet sandwiches?

Interesting place, with a great vibe allowing for the youth of Greenside to mingle with the not so old professionals. Had a quick lunch the other day. Good service. Good people. Even better Nachos!!!

Nice view on the deck and the drink where okay. The food was quite suitable. Would like to see more variety on the cocktail menu, just for control :)

The Artisan is such an awesome joint. The decor is handmade and quirky which I love and it appears to be quite small from the outside but there's ample seating in three different areas. We chose the upstairs area which overlooks the famous greenside stretch and its such a relaxing area. The music is subtle so u can hear yourself speak. The waiters are very attentive. We had the delish beef nachos with a range of craft beer tasters as well as draughts. The nachos was so divine. Each layer was filled with a meaty cheesy filling which is great so you dont have dry nacho chips at the end which I have experienced at many places. Due to our zomato check in the manager came through to chat and offer us delish turkish delight shooters. Yummy. Awesome service and great for a lazy afternoon out watching the world go by.
