We ate the veg platter and tried 2 or 3 different curries including the bunny chow all were really good, flavourful, freshly made and plentiful. The service was great and the beer was cold. If you want wholesome, hearty Indian food this is the place.

I visited the restaurant with my friends, we were delighted by the authentic South Indian starters and main course. The taste is delicious and the service is excellent food served on time with very hot and fresh feels like just having home food at restaurant after a long time.. Thank you Satkar for serving such a wonderful food..

Big shout out to the guys at Satkar! Not only delicious food but great service. My food had turned up split in the bag (please see previous review). They apologized and gave me a new meal on the house. Perfect example of how to turn a bad situation into a great one! Thinks guys.I will absolutely order again.

Satkar Indian Restaurant: We as family visited Satkar Indian Restaurant for Diwali evening. They haa special lights that were lit up in the restaurant including at the entrance. The look and feel is awesome. We were welcome by a happy looking waitresses. We loved the food. The starters was very delicious. On the main course Butter chicken with Naan was very tasty. We loved everything that we ordered. The best north Indian food at very affordable pricing . Loved every bit. Thanks guys.

I have always been impressed with all of the dishes at Satkar, especially the Chicken Korma. More than that, the hosts have gone out of their way to accommodate my friends and myself when dining there on special occasions. Whether a sit- down or take- out, Satkar has never disappointed.

We had a very pleasant experience at Satkar with very good food and excellent service. Both the Lamb Curry as well as the Tandoori Chicken we ordered were delicious. We will be back again!

I've moved up from KZN to JHB, and after trying a few Indian restaurants, it felt like I wasn't going to find something to my taste. Finally, I came to Satkar, I thoroughly enjoyed every bite. Everyone has their own preference, but I definitely think that you should pop by and try out their food. I'd recommend the Chicken Vindaloo for the brave.

Satkar Melville's never disappoints with their meals. ALWAYS fresh and Big portions + Friendly staff and Great owner. Best indian food in town.

Quantity and quality is good... Taste could be made better. Otherwise the menu is good enough with enough variety. Situated in a nice commercial area full of pubs and coffee shops. Service is good as well.

I approached Satkar to prepare food for a wedding (100 guests). We were requested to pick up early on the date of the wedding to ensure it is fresh. On the menu was chicken Biryani. Lamb Korma, Rice, Naan and Roti. On the Saturday Satkar was ready with our food and the guests really thought it was amazing. I was able to cater for a very reasonable price and still deliver a good and tasty experience.Thank you for your great service and great food.

Absolutely amazing food. Always use orderIn and Uber Eats. Recently went to sit down for a first time and did not disappoint. Romeo our waiter was swift and friendly also extremely helpful and every dish we ordered (Chicken Curry, Butter Chicken, Chicken Korma, Chicken Tikka) was exactly as asked and beautifully spiced and flavoured. Will always recommend this place.

I really like going to Melville every once in a blue moon. And me and my friend quickly wanted to grab lunch.

And because I tend to go the healthy route, good carbs and good protein can always be found in an Indian biryani.

It isn’t a very welcoming restaurant because of the specific location, and the service was okay (even though we were the only 2 people there). Could’ve probably been a bit more friendly.

The food was tasteful and filling, but there was only like four small pieces of chicken in a full bowl of rice.

When the food was served, I initially thought that the bowl I got was just my rice, and maybe I still have to wait for the chicken. But after a while I realized that the bowl in front of me was the biryani dish.

Coming to Satkar for a late lunch on a Sunday meant that it was completely empty (bar my friend and I). Satkar’s look is one that would work better in Fordsburg than Melville: low-budget, functional, unremarkable and boring. It’s an Indian food place in a cool area: a lot more could be done. In fact, the restaurant next door plays Bollywood music which is the only unique bit of ambience at Satkar.

I ordered a little bit of everything. Chicken tikka, seekh kebabs, onion bhajia, samoosas, paneer loveables, gulab jamun...... and so on. The food was average (nothing I would send back, but nothing I’d remember) - with the exception of the gulab jamun. The only basis on which I could be persuaded to return is that the food is incredibly well-priced (not unusually so for Melville though) and that there are more options on the menu that I could change my mind.

The service was aces. But, given that we were the only people at the restaurant, it’s possible we just got lucky and had a waitress who is a nice person in and of herself.

Pro-Tip: if you crave cheap but tasty enough Indian food and also don’t want to wait too long for your food - go here.

Portions were small for price and had misleading advertising with regards to specials. Waitress told us they only come into effect next month (went on 20th November )very average...wouldn't go back

We ended up at Satkar for dinner the one evening. I don't really venture out to Melville that often so I was keen to try it out. I have to say that I wasn't really impressed. The restaurant is dark and dingy and I've definitely had better Indian food elsewhere. The food was pretty average and not exactly cheap. The Butter Chicken and Paneer Butter Masala weren't too bad but were also nothing to rave about. We also ordered a carrot halwa to share for dessert. It tasted like it had been stored in the fridge with spices and heated up in the microwave. When we told the manager of the restaurant about this, he took offence and told us not to speak about his food in that way. I definitely wouldn't rush back here.

I tried chicken lollipops from here they were good but only little spicy for this chili lover but sauce was really flavorsome, ordered cucumber raita and it was a generous portion .

Authentic Indian curry and dessert (not all sweet ;-) that have not disappointed in all the years I've been!
Bizarrely they don't serve coffee, but have a good choice of wine. Food prepared to perfection and served fairly fast!

If you want great Indian cuisine, this is the place to go. Their lamb and chicken dishes are to kill for. Their Naan breads a good size and tasty too!

Terrible food. No basmati rice, batter (bright pink) of chicken lollipops and paneer starter tasteless. Service was friendly though. Will never go back.
Carien Jakovljevic
We ordered take aways from here after reading the reviews and it was average. We order chicken lollipops and butter chicken (medium) as well as garlic naan. The garlic on the naan was quite raw, which gave it an overwhelming garlic taste. The butter chicken was HOT and super spicy, not what I would expect for a medium. Chicken lollipops was good. Despite the above it was still good and is excellent value for money!

The food was not at all good.. we got a stale desert and the chef did not accept even after tasting the same.. would not suggest this place for eating..
Zillah Wehinger-Maguire
Food was really good, had the lamb korma, naan bread and pompadums most definitely worth it, portion size is also very good. Service was friendly. Will come back for sure.

Indian cuisine is one of my favorite.
I've been to a lot of places and this one is really good. Comes really close to the food you get in India.
Great food, great taste. Worth going there!

After staying in the area for years I popped in here for a take-away a while ago. The wait was a little long but that's pretty standard for Indian food and I think you can call ahead to order a take-away.

I had the Aloo matar Gobi and it was great- hot as I had requested yet all the delicious flavours from the curry sauce still came through. We had garlic, and perhawari naan bread- both were great the garlic naan especially. Their bean bunny chow was also quite tasty.

I'm so glad we decided to try Satkar as we were originally a little off put by the outside appearance- don't be! Inside it is warm and inviting with friendly service and delicious food.
The samosas were lovely; the pastry isn't the usual kind but rather a kind of pie crust-type pastry.
My chicken tikka masala with garlic naan was perfectly spicy and a generous portion. My mom's half tandoori chicken was a bit dry but also very tasty.
The food arrived quickly and our waitress was really sweet.
Will definitely be back again soon!

Satkar was born when management took over the old, previously unsuccessful restaurant. They managed to do something special. They transformed this previously boring space into something incredible, in its own right at least.

The best thing about Satkar is the incredible quality of the food, which is married with deep succulent flavours and tastes. I usually go for the butter chicken or the chicken tikka masala. Each time I try and only eat half the serving, but unfortunately my self control very rarely prevails and I end up eating everything in front of me. The Naan is always spectacular. The different between getting take aways or eating there usually rests on how fresh you want the naan to be. And when eating in, ordering more food is always just way to easy.

If you are ever in the mood for Indian, you could not go wrong with Satkar, in fact this could be the best Indian restaurant in Johannesburg

Very good indian food. I love the chicken lollypops. They make a mean bunny cow. Hot lamb bunny is my favorite. With cheese and garlic naan on the side. Give them a try

I visited this Indian restaurant in joburg, Melville to see how the South African edition of Indian food tastes. And by surprise I found bunny chow which is the South African cousin to our very own pav bhaji. And yes, bunny chows come in non-veg edition- chicken/lamb/beef. They even have an small outside area, good for a evening hangout.

In visiting this branch for the first time this evening it was pretty quiet. This restaurant is located directly opposite 27 boxes in Melville. The staff are friendly and quite helpful. They offer a wide array of vegetarian options for starters and mains.

The portion sizes of the meals are good and the food is well priced. It is nice to see a strawberry lassi (which took some time to be prepared) as there are not many North Indian restuarants locally that have such a variation which was quite enjoyable - it was however a bit artificially sweet. The naan bread however was just fantastic! The korma dish could be improved as it felt there was a layer of flavour missing. On the other end, the yellow dhal was quite enjoyable.

We will most definately be visiting this restaurant again in the near future to try some of the other vegetarian items on their menu such as the Thali lunch special.

My best friend and I call this place "home". We've been eating here for over a year and it's been one of those places that we know we'll visit for the rest of our lives (so the Indian cuisine gods better be on our side).

Satkar makes the most delicious Indian cuisine in Jo'burg (according to me) and there's absolutely nothing I can fault them on. The food is always on par, the naan bread always so freshly prepared and the service has been excellent on every occasion.

The weird thing is that tonight my bestie and I set out to try a new restaurant that a lot of people have been raving about here on Zomato. We got to the restaurant, sat down, looked at the menu and almost right away, we stood up and walked away knowing exactly where we'd rather be... At Satkar obviously lol!

I won't lie, at some point we called this "our little shady spot" and that's because we didn't quite enjoy the decor at first. We found it rather dim inside but since that first day, I think the owner/manager has made a real effort with the place... Even with the smallest things. That just means that they take their business seriously and that's just wonderful!

Love this place... Nhlanhla Khumalo

Lovely restaurant. Great service. And all you actually want - amazing curry. Good sitting at the restaurant and take always. Have never had a bad meal at Satkar!

If you looking for best authentic Indian dishes and flavor, this small restaurant tucked away in busy street of 4th Avenue, Melville, Johannesburg is place to be. From outside, place is nothing much but a ordinary Indian curry place, inside interior is also very simple and more of a traditional Indian wedding hall look. When it comes to food the place is best in South Africa I can easily say. This humble looking place will surprise you when it comes to food. Taste of dishes is very authentic and their samosas are one of the best I have ever eaten outside India. Price wise also place is very reasonable. Service is good.

They also have Sunday Buffet for R89/-

if you visiting 27 Boxes, Melville this place is just across the road so save your appetite and full fill it with best curry in the town.
Rachel Bright
Great authentic Indian cuisine. Brilliant paneer and selection of all choices. The service is usually pretty good too. Great place for a meal

OMG! Best Indian food I have ever had ... and I am originally from Durban.Don't let it's appearance put you off ... have to try their food!!!!
Amy Lara Baxter
On arrival the restaurant does not look the greatest from the outside. It has dirty white plastic pull downs facing the road and an entrance into apartments on entering. But the inside looks beautiful and is decorated well.
The service was very good from a knowledgable and friendly waiter. We had chicken samosas and chicken pieces with a cashew paste for starters, they were divine! However the pastry on the samosa was very thick. Our mains were divine, the butter chicken was delicious! And so is the butter naan.

I was very unsettled though on arrival. On arrival there was a staff member sleeping at one of the tables which really put me off- was that where I was supposed to eat my meal?

This place has got to be my ultimate favourite Indian restuarant in Johannesburg. Their curries are so rich with these amazing flavours - perfectly seasoned every time. Their service is always above par. I have tried almost every single dish on the menu and they are all my favourites. Their meat dishes are just as good as their vegetarian dishes which are just as good as their fish dishes. Their portions are huge and that naan... My goodness!! They simply have it right in every way.

I go to Satkar regularly, I usually have the Veg curries and especially the Panner matar. The food is consistently great across all the dishes my family and i order. the owner takes pride in his restaurant and the staff are friendly.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great indian cuisine.

Great meal, good portions, lovely ambiance and good service. Chicken Korma was beautiful, Chicken Palak was very tasty, the Stuffed Paratha (aloo), Peshwari Naan and Plain Naan were all brilliant. I also highly recommend the Mango Lassie and wish I'd tried the Strawberry too. Our only criticism is that the Lamb Curry was mutton and nothing special - but perhaps this is because both Chicken dishes were excellent and the mutton was only "good".
Glenda Sheridan
Just had a fantastic meal. Great chicken korma & chicken palak, the samoosas were amazing and the mango lassie was incredible. Portion sizes were perfect and decor is simple and elegant. Discovered we like masala tea too!
Quite busy for a Monday night, particularly on the take away side. Meals take a little while to get to you, but they are freshly prepared and worth the wait.
Will definitely be back!

Since the moment I tasted the chef's jalfrezi, I was hooked on Satkar. With their delicious menu, friendly staff and excellent management, you can't go wrong visiting Melville's best kept secret. I recently made use of their catering services for a birthday party too. Their food really makes me happy. 5 stars.
Werner Prinsloo
They do the best Korma I have ever had! So aromatic and great texture, try the paneer option, you won't be disappointed! The chicken Jalfrezi is another one of my favourites. Management is ever present and everyone is super friendly. Great place contributing to the upliftment of the entire melville area.

Very nice indian food. Biggest selection of naan Ive seen as well as a very wide chicken selection. Even have a couple chef special dishes. Proper flavours, had rogan josh hot was soooo good worked up a tiny sweat.
Innes Du Preez
The food is really good, amazing flavours. The portion was however a bit small and service is nothing to rave about. It is however very well priced. Highly recommended if you are in the mood for some Indian food. The food is spicy, just a warning.

Grabbed take out from them the first time this weekend. Great food, nice and close, and really reasonably priced. Sit down visit next.

I live very close to Satkar, and as a result, I often eat here.

The restaurant used to be called Sahib, but the chefs took over from the manager and it is now Satkar! The food is as good, if not better, than before, and very reasonably priced. Their bunny chows are great, the samoosas are the best I've ever had the privilege of eating, and their korma is phenomenal. The food has been so good, so often, that my partner and I have been a lot more experimental, and as a result have opened our mouths for some of the tastiest food in Joburg!

Although the decor is a bit dark, and not very fancy, you must remember why you are at Satkar - warm service, excellent food, good prices, and a very big smile from Ranjeet.

Chicken Lollypops, Chicken Bhuna Gost, pakoda, Daal Makhani, Paneer Butter Masala, any Korma, and all the naan breads are recommended!
