Review Brik Cafe - Johannesburg

Lovely and pleasant with a very "green" vibe and philosophy. Food was interesting and tasty. Healthier options available for those looking. Friendly staff and the owner is clearly passionate about her project. Worth visiting!

What a lovely surprise being invited for coffee at Brik Cafe. I love the minimalist industrial feel of the place. The staff was friendly and competent. The menu is interesting and tempting. I enjoyed a Bircher muesli breakfast dish and my companion order a slice of banana bread which he enjoyed as well. I will be back.

Situated inside an old fire station in Rosebank, Brik is not your typical cafe. It is quaint and inconspicuous when viewed from the outside. Inside it a minimalistic and practically furnished. The patrons, on the day I was there, ranged from students to older hipsters. The staff is friendly and efficient, but best of all they don't know hover over you while you socialise and eat. The menu is varied and well-thought-out, ranging from traditional to vegan. There are various merchandise and items on offer to buy. The food is great and tasty. The coffee is superb, prepared by a barista no less! Portions are medium size. Prices are mid-range to pricy, well worth it depending on your taste. Visit and decide for yourself, but leave the pretence on the pavement.

Interesting menue with tasty food, pity they ran out of lots of the menus items on a Sun morning. Not so good for a Sun breakfast if little is available. Focusing a bit more on vegan and vegetarian dishes which is great

The chickpea pancakes were definitely a hit! Also enjoyed some eggs and the coffee was excellent. Very cosy space with cute decor and a great vibe. Can’t wait to go back! They also stock Orbs! 😍

The ex-chef from Naked Coffee is now running Brik Cafe. I love that everything is ethically and responsibly sourced. Leftovers are used as compost, plastic waste is used for eco-bricks, and water & juice bottles are recycled into t-shirts and bags sold at the store. The menu is suited for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free. I tried the chickpea pancakes with orange marmalade, fresh orange and almond frangipane, which was delicious. You're given a jug of water and glass before a menu. Love this spot. Worth a visit.

A lovely place to have a coffee and some tasty food. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable on the menu and helpful with suggestions. My favorite meal is the Brisket Vietnamese Roll and the short rib and pap!😍

An awesome little restaurant promoting sustainability and an eco-friendly vibe. I loved the earthenware plates and jugs, and the menu has options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. For starters we had a Brinjal and Brussel Sprout salad to share. The flavours were sweet and tangy, but I was a bit let down that the Brussel Sprout portion of the salad was a few leaves off of one Brussel Sprout. I had the Ricotta Dumplings which were quite bland, but the spinach mole sauce was delicious that it came on. My friend ordered the vegetarian Vietnamese Rolls and those were excellent. Super fresh and tasty, and the mayo they used was so good. I’m keen to head back and try the rest of the menu, as the breakfasts look divine.

Such a nice little place. The coffee is delicious and there's a good variety of food to order whether vegan, vegetarian or not. Not super cheap but definitely worth it!

A beautiful space. Delicious food. A great sunny warm spot for brunch. I love the fact that everything is recycled. Can’t wait to go there again!

Really lovely, simple food. I ordered a roasted cauliflower salad that came with pickled grapes, chickpeas and a yogurt dressing and it was unbelievable - and I love meat and usually hate chickpeas but this was incredibly yum.

10.10.2019 I recently got to experience something very unique and different on the taste buds. If you are someone that wants your food made sustainably, responsibly, ethically and consciously then best you check out the restaurant offerings.

BRIK Café is by the Rosebank Fire Department on the corner with huge bay windows. It does make it a bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with the place. Currently they offer pre-breakfasts and breakfasts, coffees, brunches, lunches, teas, after-work drinks and they have started with dinners as we head into summer. It is one of those spots where you need to find a place that can accommodate all kinds of “eaters” be it Vegan, vegetarian or just plain meat. Everything is made from scratch, except for items like the “Truthery” cold press juices, which are very refreshing, the Malies Boabab ice creams and a lot of pickling.

On arrival, we received such a delicious cocktail, not sure what all was in it besides Vodka, but I would definitely have it again and again. The tables were also beautifully decorated with a bouquet of veggies, all fresh and full of goodness.

The nibbles on the table were a combination of “Bru-schetta”, sourdough topped with Labneh and toasted seeds and pecan nuts; green Tomato gremolata, preserved Orange, Chilli and Pecan nuts. The Tomato one was definitely my favourite. Fried Fish ‘Caesar’ – Kingklip, massaged Kale, Caperberry tartar and Parmesan. Salad, warm Eggplant, Brussel sprout leaves, Mint, Hoison with preserved and fresh lemon. Wrap your mind around this BBQ Pulled Banana Peel with Hummus and Tomato 😱😱😱.

For mains we could select anything off the menu, and well I happened to see some meaty options and the burger caught my eye. Grass-fed beef burger, Umami Basting,, Corn Ketchup, Grilled Onions and a Tomato Water Pickle on the side with a Sweet Potato hash. Burger was juicy and cooked perfectly, I just need a bit of spice or chilli to add to it. I got to taste the Corn Ribs, which was also rather tasty.

My fellow foodies also chose interesting options, like the Calamari with Roast Grapes, Grilled Cabbage, Taramasalata and a BRIK Pastry on top. The Picanha Rump steak, with Wilted greens, Vietnamese rice paper, Romanesco, and corn ribs, and the Short Rib with Mielie meal and Brussel Sprouts, which was changed to mushrooms.

As for desserts, now there is some WOW Combinations I would have never paired, so if you have an adventurous palate go for it and let me know your thoughts. I am a sucker for Carrot cakes, so I ordered that, and my friends had the Chocolate Cake, Banana bread with Housemade Butter, and lastly Gooseberry Crumble. The carrot cake was a bit to dry in texture yet sweet for me, I think I am too use to my moms Carrot cake. The chocolate cake was extremely rich and dense, if you are a chocolate lover. I didn’t try any of the ice creams, but they all seemed to go down pretty well.

They do serve alcohol FYI, just incase you are wondering they have a well curated little wine list, to sip on while enjoying your meal.

Thanks to Martha and MJ for service with a smile, and to Sasha, for all your heart and soul in the meals and the prep surrounding them ensuring that you doing your bit to ensure responsible eating, with a conscious.

#TheFoodMusketeer
#TheFoodMusketeerEats
#TheFoodMusketeerDrinks
#TFMBrikCafe
#ConsciousnessBrikCafe
#brik_cafe
#Hosted
.
