Review Kong Sing - Johannesburg

Enez du plessis
Our third time coming for the AYCE buffet, and amazing as always!! The food is made to order, so it’s always fresh and tasty. For AYCE, R208 is an absolute steal! Our personal favourites would be the black bean sauce with beef and noodles, bbq l pork rice spring roll, and of course the sushi. The service is always incredibly fast, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with the TV usually playing a movie (we watched the 1989 Batman today) and some music quietly playing in the background.

My boyfriend and I were craving good sushi and this adorable family restaurant hit the spot. The food was absolutely delicious. We got the buffet option and truly feasted wow!! Genuinely incredible food, and I’m pretty particular if I say so myself. The wasabi sushi is definitely not for the faint of heart though! I’ve never reviewed a place but needed to come here and give them 5 stars :)
Megan Coetzee
Great restaurant, highly recommend going here if you love Asian cuisine! The service was outstanding and the food tasted absolutely delicious, 10/10 overall.
Ms Noxolo
Awesome customer service, and the food was delicious. The crispy dumplings and sushi are the reason I'll be visiting them again.
Donna Piek
The food was great! The service excellent! The chairs are uncomfortable and it was very cold and very quite.
Celine Grant
The people who work there are so lovely ! My boyfriend and I had the best sushi and the pork dumplings (crispy) are AMAZING! Definitely going back asap.

Had a great time with my family here today. The food was delicious and service was amazing. You would notice immediately the warm family owned business vibes as everyone went out of their way to make us comfortable. Sushi is to die for, buffet was lovely. Will definitely be back soon. The guy who served us Warren was so caring and attentive.
Daniel Strydom
Sometimes it's hard to get away from all the noise but this place is so wonderful its peaceful, quiet and great few I will definitely come back again and food prices are really cheap 10/10 rating from me
Tiana P
Delicious food, friendly service. Was definitely worth the visit and wait. Will definitely be back!!
Nicole Sengers
Really enjoyed the service and the food. We had a great evening.
Constantia Lotter
Wonderful service. Fantastic food. Affordable prices. Always impressed when we go there. Such a variety on the menu. Definately try the exotic drinks they have available. Not just your average asian cuisine...
Stephen Kerwin
You have to give this place a try. Just a great selection of Asian Foods.
Npolo Ngoywa
The best Asian restaurant I’ve ever been to in Johannesburg . We’ve had the buffet on two occasions. We did not have to wait too long between servings. All the food was freshly prepared and the price was beyond reasonable for the quality and quantity. The fried dumplings were the highlight on the buffet menu. The staff we’re also very friendly.
Rochelle van der Walt
This place is awesome! Sushi buffet is amazing with great variety! Would suggest sitting at the Sushi bar for the buffet and you can order from the menu too! It’s cool that you can order other food as well as part of the all you can eat sushi buffet and dessert. Very clean and the owners are super friendly too! Really nice restaurant!

Amazing food with great service so much care and love goes into every detail! Made my birthday extremely special. THE BEST SUSHI AND DIM SUM I HAVE EVER EATEN.
Shanty Mitri
We frequently went to Bedford center before lockdown and we're so happy you've reopened in cyrildene. Love your food, hospitality and Asian authenticity.

I've eaten at Kong Sing before (both eating in and from Mr Delivery) and have always had good food. We had the Dim Sum and Sushi buffet this time, and it was really delicious. You order off of each menu, and get the usual condiments of soya sauce, ginger, and wasabi. There's a lot of variety on both menus, so we will definitely be returning to try the items we didn't eat this time. I highly recommend them.
Wynand Britz
#sushibuffet great sushi and any Chinese food you would like, really good food, nice atmosphere and delicious food. Highly recommended and awesome host. Vakue for money sushi everything is really fresh and a good place for a function.
Caitlin Leigh McLellan
The service was really slow. The food was not served at the same time so we spent a lot of the time watching others eat while we waited. The crispy chicken tasted of tomato sauce, rather than sweet and sour sauce.
Ccbalton
The rice in this place smelt so bad and tasted even worse. The manager said that this is how his customers like it, with added bbq. The food had no taste. And this was the worst chicken corn soup I have ever eaten. I don’t think I will ever ever ever go back here .....
Bacara Spruit
Really great atmosphere, staff are friendly and try to accommodate you as best possible. It's a bit expensive but I really enjoyed the all you can eat sushi and dim sum buffet. I enjoyed the variety and being able to taste food I wouldn't normally order
Belinda
Had such a nice evening. Food (dimsum and sushi) was really good, waiters and the owner/manager were so friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back for the dimsum and sushi buffet!
Monique Pinheiro
Very poor service. Waited so long for something as simple as the chicken soup which should be made and ready to go. Food was bland and I've had better elsewhere. For what you get it's quite pricey. "Loved" that our waiter only said at the end that the card machine was broken making us have to go withdraw money. Extremely disappointed
Sonia Almeida
Love love udon noodles had their prawn option and wow best I have ever had! Will definitely be back! The service also outstanding! They also have a sushi buffet I would like to try
Lauren Noble
All you can eat sushi! Who can say no to that? Love it. Their sushi is amazing. And you can have the choice of dimsum as-well if you choose the all- you- can-eat option. Been going here for years and never been disappointed.
Bianca Zoë Georgiou
Love the buffet option! My boyfriend and I go here quite often and take the buffet option every time!
He’s a big fan of the pork & prawn dim sum. And I’m inlove with the salmon crispy cup!!! The sushi is always super fresh. Sometimes it’s a bit slow, depending how busy it is, but it’s totally worth it. Management is so friendly and always checks in on how your meal is going. And everytime we go we receive a free shot of sakke 👌🏻 I will always return
Shanade Jacqueline Barnett
The best sushi in town!
Their eat as much as you want special is phenomenal and worth every cent. We have been to this friendly restaurant for more than one special occasion and we are NEVER dissatisfied!
Thank you for your great service, delicious sushi and tasty Dim sum.
Kimberley Blunden
Adored this place ! The staff were so friendly and the service was amazing.

My family and I decided, instead of having one dish each, we ordered Set Menu A, B & C. There was such a variety of food and so much food, that everyone got to taste everything. It was so tasty and definitely worth it ! I recommend ordering a variety of dishes instead of an individual dish.

I did thoroughly enjoy the lemon prawns and sweet and sour pork. They were very good !
Jaco De Wet
Great sushi and a good variety! Try the chicken noodle soup! The Chinese food is ok. Not the best, but ok. Otherwise, good value for money and well worth a visit!
Merlin Labuschagne
Had some sceptism after reading some negative comments here but what an awesome place! We were a group of 6 and had a wide range of items from the menu including the dum sin buffet and all were excellent. The atmosphere was awesome. Service was excellent and management were present and involved and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely be back.
Paulo Gaspar
Saw some decent reviews for the sushi and decided to give it a try. Sushi was ok although the sushi rice used was not bad. For the price charged for the sushi buffet, there are better options. Service was below par and disconnected.
Peter
Very disappointing. I had the Sizzling black pepper chicken which was very bland and quite tasteless. Couldn't be certain it was chicken. My partner had the THAI green curry which was sweet (!) and served with onion rings on top - that's a first. The waiter was attentive and friendly. Wouldn't go back.
Melissa Van Der Walt
Bad service, bad food waited over 45min for food and there were only two tables in the restaurant. Sushi is tasteless, mostly cucumber and rice.... Don't waste your time here.
Clair
Very bad experience. Waited an hour and a half for our food. While we were waiting we spotted a cockroach on the floor. We had told our waitress that we had a movie to catch in the beginning of the evening and throughout our wait she never came to check on us or ask us if we would like to order more drinks let alone apologize that the food is taking long. When our food arrived the order was incorrect and it arrived at exactly the time our movie was starting. The food was $H!T. The sad thing is the manager should actuallyread these as mines not the only bad one and try and improve his waitresses and kitchen staff as well as the cockroaches🐛

I visited Kong Sing recently after not having been there for a sit-down meal in quite a long time. The interior seemed different to how I remember, and the layout and mismatched tables felt a little uncomfortable. The menu has everything you would expect, although for standard Chinese fare, it is a bit on the pricey side. The service was average and the restaurant, while noisy, lacks ambiance. I ordered the beef chow mein, which was a good-sized portion and fairly tasty but not exceptional. The sushi buffet looked good and I think that may be a better option if I was to return.
Sharon Hendry
We had a wonderful evening and the food was divine. Attention to detail very good. Worth going to. The owner is visible and interacts with patrons. Menu choice varied from sushi to dim sum to Chinese, catering to everyone's palates.
Kadija Di Allo
My favourite sushi place. The prices are decent and the sushi is delicious! The staff is very friendly and the food is great. Their calamari main is one thing I can't seem to do without. I've enjoyed being there with many of my friends and even alone. Will definitely be going back
Amy Desdemona Pavadal
One can tell by the stacked plates that the sushi was great! No reservations required, this was a buffet which is excellent for sushi lovers...got served saki which was complimentary, service was good, prices are reasonable, desert did take a while to be served though. Stoil Michaylov thanks for the treat
Stoil Michaylov
I was a bit apprehensive about coming here but I must say it was a good experience. The sushi and dim sum buffet is really good value for eat all you can for R168 which includes deserts and the lot.
The staff and management team are a real bunch of friendly guys which take their offering very seriously and their willingness to ensure you're comfortable and happy really give the place a cool vibe.

Smashing the buffet at R168 ...... got my money's worth.
M P
I'm a regular here because the staff is always super friendly, the food is good and the atmosphere is really nice. The sushi buffet is such a great deal. My go to for sit-down sushi!
Janice Kelvin Leibowitz
Pleasant Chinese/Thai restaurant which also offers a sushi menu and a set Chinese menu (3 options). Excellent value for money as portions are extremely generous. I had the chicken sweet corn soup to start and instead of just a single serving I received a bowl to serve from, with an amount sufficient for at least 3 or 4 portions! The chicken Thai green curry although again a generous portion was not served as it usually is in most places (in a bowl with a lot of sauce, broth or gravy). It was plated together with the rice. While it was tasty, I wouldn't order it again. Service was efficient and friendly and the owner came past more than once to check that all was ok. For variety and value I'd recommend it.
Steven Frohlich
I came here for all you can eat sushi and dim sum on Wednesday night with some friends. Service was slow as the trainees were making the food. But the sushi and dim sum and friendly manager are worth the rating.
Andre Breytenbach
Chinese options are limited in Bedfordview, as with most of them Kong Sing do not disappoint with the outdated kitsch décor. Nice view from the open deck outside, waitresses have very little clue what to recommend. Food was so so and I will not be back in a hurry. It is ok for a quick bite after a movie.
Tim Rogers
Kong Sing is dead. Having been an avid eater of their sushi buffet for a few years, today marks the last time I ever set foot inside Kong Sing. The level of sushi has dropped significantly, having been served old and stale ingredients, perfectly complimented with same level of service but with added dread. Such a pity, good night sweet prince.
Marius Swanepoel
Went to Kong Sing on Saturday for the sushi buffet. Although sushi on offer was nice. The buffet had no variety, 4 different types of sushi circulated for the entire duration of our meal. Around 8:30 despite around 9 people sitting around the conveyor belt no new sushi was being made or added. Leaving the same 12 plates to circulate endlessly.
Reino
I would strongly advise sushi lovers to shy away... Kong Sing has really been going backwards. After 1 hour of buffet prep and waiting even longer we were met with about 25 bowls of 2 different varieties... All the same... nothing new. We resorted to ordering from a menu interacting with waiters that has the emotional responses of walls... no smiles... no friendliness. This is also not the first time complaining. The variety is poor, the food is not that great and it would be better for them to close their doors...
Jeanique Pretorius
Visited here some time ago. I was neither here nor there about my first impression. Decor outdated and dull, we decided to be seated outside. Waiters can do with brushing up on product knowledge and maybe a smile every now and then. Service is slow and food is not of the best I have had. Went for the All you can eat special and my favorite was the soup. But there is lots of room for improvement. Restaurant has a perfect spot and can do extremely well, just some attention to detail and quality.

A casual Friday night lead us to Kong Sing. Mixed feelings about this place - as good as the deal is, I just don't feel that the food was exceptional. We opted for the R168pp and to be blunt, it's average and expected from a 'buffet' deal. We waited for approximately 45min before we saw any sign of our food. We had ordered a variety of dishes from the buffet menu, and with the sushi that we had asked for first, arrived in the middle of the other dishes. There is a large selection from sushi, dim sum, soups, dumplings, sticky pork ribs and larger meals such as chow mein and sweet and sour pork. From what I remember it from the past few years, it's lost it's authentic touch.
Mika
The MOST DISGUSTING plate of food I have ever had in front of me never mind actually tasted. I ordered the chicken chow mein. the noodles looked like spaghetti, the chicken looked like processed spongy chicken nuggets, the sauce which was suppose to be soya sauce looked like sludgy bbq sauce mixed with pasta starch water, gooey consistency. it was so disgusting that I only picked the raw bland veggies off it and threw the rest away. Will never be going there again.
Paul Von Zeuner
Wow... The worst sushi I have ever had. Rice was salty. No avo in the Californian roles... Pick something else... Dumplings for starters is the only thing that was good.
Ashleigh McLeod
We were so excited to try the sushi buffet we drove to Bedford from sandton. There was no sushi on the conveyer belt so we ordered from the menu thinking it would actually be better because it would then be fresh! While waiting we had two portions of dim sum that was quite tasty, the sushi arrived and after the first bite I said I'm not eating this(it tasted like a dirty soggy cloth) there was defiantly something wrong with the fish and the amount of rice used was ridiculous! We called the manager over quietly and explained the sushi was off we just want to pay for our drinks and leave. His was extremely rude and went ahead and charged us R150 for two small portions of money ‪bags and acted like we were in the wrong for not wanting to eat the off sushi! Do not try this place! very disappointed in the food and service.

Decided to get take outs and this was Genuinely the worst sushi I have ever had. A complete waste of money, the salmon in the fashion sandwiches looked and tasted like it was tinned salmon, the avos were brown and it was just shocking
Clare Appleyard
Popped in on Sunday to sample the R168 per person all-you-can-eat sushi and dim sum buffet, and walked away with very mixed feelings.

SERVICE: Appalling. The table cloth was damp (just washed?) and our waitress took ages to take our drinks order, bring us chopsticks, wasabi and ginger. The dim sum menu was separate to the main menu and again, wasn't delivered promptly. Drink orders were forgotten and there was a general lack of attentiveness.

AMBIANCE/ATMOSPHERE: None whatsoever. It was relatively empty on a Sunday afternoon, granted but there was absolutely no vibe whatsoever.

FOOD: This is where the saving grace came in. The dim sum was all hot and freshly cooked. What was supposed to be crispy was crispy. Many dim sum items came with a generous lashing of mayonnaise which was a little disturbing. The sushi was pretty decent. The steamed prawn dim sum took forever to arrive, which seemed a little strange. Overall, items were fresh and flavour full.

VALUE FOR MONEY: Individually, Chinese main course dishes were extortionately priced compared to what you can get in Cyrildene. Sushi is expensive for small portions and dim sum prices again higher than Cyrildene. We managed to eat enough to justify the per person buffet cost, but if you take that out of the equation it's over-priced.

CONCLUSION: We're not going back. Period. Stick to Cyrildene.

*old review* This place has got some good food. We had lunch here one afternoon and we decided on the set menus which is a good choice to have a varied selection but you not entirely sure what to choose at the same time.

The staff even helped me to try my hand at chopsticks which I totally suck at. Eventually I was given a Spoon lol. Their chicken soup is very good. Need to go back and retry my skills...
Quintin
For a good Chinese meal and great atmosphere this is the place. One thing the pricing has gone up a bit from the last time good sushi as well
Bleedingears
This place has been around forever and continues to offer good Chinese sit down and take away food. My favourite is the black bean chicken. They also have a sit down sushi bar, although there is better sushi in the area.
David Adao
A pleasant place very spacious. You have the option of the conveyor or off the menu. The food is fresh. Where I was pleasantly surprised if the fact the owner are hands on and willing to help and assist. You can even create your own sushi master piece which my son loved. The husband is walking around offering samples of saki. I will def come back again.
Kaylee Southwood
The sushi here is pretty amazing. The service is good and the staff are very friendly. The deck is amazing with a beautiful view. The decor is pretty.
Annabel
The best Chinese in the area. Love their Chicken and corn soup and their Chow Mein are very good too. They also have delicious sushi and Dim Sums.
Rose Marie Pereira
Your typical Chinese food, they have all your favorite dishes, this place is always busy , they have an all you can eat option great value for those who can eat a lot! ;) also next to movies, so a good option if you want dinner and movies
Micaela Rodrigues
Sushi is always good at Kong Sing. Always made fresh, and they have a wide variety of sushi, including bacon sushi. Sushi pricing is also good with 30% off during the week. Would definitely recommend Kong Sing
Genevieve Law
The view is spectacular from this restaurant. The service is friendly and efficient. The variety is large and the food is ok. Some of the dishes lean towards fusion rather than fully Chinese but overall the restaurant is decent.
Kalycia Urquhart
Not impressed with how far standards have dropped. I've been eating at Kong Sing for years and am disappointed at lazy and very loud kitchen staff and servers. Plastic cutlery. Poor food quality and a generally poor dining environment.
Taniko Gough
Had their Sushi Special here quite a few times and each time was great . Their Sushi is delicious ! Love the different versions that they make , always a taste bud explosion . Staff are also really nice and attentive .
Barrington Alan Southwood
Chinese food is something that I think most South Africans look for. Kong Sing is a great place to enjoy well prepared food and great service!
Epicurean Republic
I've eaten at Kong Sing on a number of occasions over the past few years. Every time I eat there I am very happy with the food but their service always seems to let them down a bit. The waiters are friendly but they take a long time to do anything. My recommendation is the all you can eat Dim Sum and Sushi.
Raymond Langa
One of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to. The food is phenomenal. It's one of the few places you can order the all you can eat and it is not restricted to sushi which really got my attention. Everything is fantastically priced and the Manager takes great pride in making you feel at home. It is definitely somewhere I would suggest you go through to and you will not be disappointed at all. Fantastic day.
Chantelle Diane Sikic
Great sushi at an affordable price! Really exciting new range as well as their dim sum menu included. Service is good. We are now known as regulars😊
Bryce Jiran Ramgovind
Go here all the time, been going there for about 5 years now. Friendly staff. Love the sushi menu. Love the sushi and dim sum special, and their crispy beef is excellent.
Qudsiya Ahmed
Last night I went to Kong Sing. I think this was around the 8th time I'd been here. But ever since the first time I went there, the quality has just been deteriorating. Last night was horrible. I took a couple of friends because we were in the area but the sushi was awful. The service was even worse and the whole attitude of the people there was horrible. The sushi rice was so tight that no soya sauce was getting absorbed. The salmon in there was tiny and it was almost white instead of being bright and pinky orange. I told the waitress that I was unimpressed that I would pay for one buffet and that I wanted to leave. The waitress then said oh well we have so many other people here eating that haven't complained. She then went on to go tell the sushi chefs who continued to look at us and speak zulu. Unfortunately for them, I understood everything they said which included that we don't know what we are talking about and that we must just leave and not come back because we're just complaining. The last time I checked "the customer is always right" is the way you train your waitresses to act and treat your customers. But here it seemed as if the staff actually controlled the Asian owners and they knew so much more about sushi. I will never ever be going there again. The quality and service was absolutely disgusting. If I could rate this place a 0, I would.

We left after spending half an hour arguing with the waitress Normani. And we went to fulfill our sushi craving at the best sushi Resturant to date in greenside called Real Sushi. I was almost tempted to take a picture of their sushi and send it to Kong Sing.

I firmly believe that if you're going to offer a sushi buffet, you don't drop your quality and you don't drop your service otherwise don't bother trying a buffet. I'd much rather pay a bit more and get amazing sushi.
Sherilyn Onslow
Such a great Asian restaurant! Last night we went for dinner and opted for the buffet. For R158 you get all you can eat sushi as well as many, many options of Dim Sum. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. A definite date night must do!
Stylo
Had not been here in a couple years & was I surprised when I visited recently. This might be Chinese food but it should NOT be served this way. The presentation is all wrong. Eating rice off a plate with chopsticks is a joke! Noodles were spaghetti!
Rather goto Cyrildene
Zizke
Great service, good sushi and a good for value buffet dinner. We have had couples evenings and big celebratory feasts here and have always had a great time. It has a beautiful view of the city scape on the outside deck (fit for summer), a good selection of inside tables and the sushi conveyor is always stocked with a variety of different plates.
Idalina Silva
This place wasn't too impressive. Came here for a quick dinner before movies. The rice in the sushi was really stodgy, making it unenjoyable and my wonton soup wasn't anything great. I feel that they could improve substantially especially for the prices that they charge.
Eleni
This is one of my favorite Asian restaurants. On Valentine's Day of 2014, I was fortunate enough to have been able to get a table without a reservation on the rooftop. It was fool moon and beyond romantic. Needless to say, it was the perfect romantic environment then and the food was nothing short of incredible. All their meals are lovely and definitely worth the money.
Justin Griesel
As long as I can remember Ive been going to Kong Sing. I used to always only order the Sweet & Sour Pork but as Ive grown Ive learnt to appreciate all that they have to offer, which is a large variety. They have an awesome selection of dim sum and sushi and the all you can eat buffet is pretty famous. The portions are massive and you'll never feel cheated.
Anthony Strydom
One word - horrible. The crispy beef was dry. They make the chow mein with Italian pasta. And then you still have to pay. Not recommended at all.
Gabriella Harris
Arrived very excited for the Dim Sum & Sushi all-you-can-eat special. Waited 15 minutes before being served. Ordered our food all at once... it took about an hour for all the small dishes to arrive, each in 10 minute intervals. Nothing was on the sushi conveyer belt to pick from. Good strategy from their side making food take so long to arrive when customers order the all-you-can-eat. From our side, was a complete waste of R158 per person.
Chokker
Good food at a decent price. Sushi is made with care and precision. The only negative thing is the slow service. For the rest its a good experience.
MelGeeZA
Good food. Still enjoy Set Menu B. Very accommodating to change elements in the set menu so you get to enjoy small bits of everything you enjoy.
Sticky pork dim sum delicious!
Hana
I tried this restaurant several months ago as I really enjoy Bedford Centre but Kong Sing was just another standard Asian restaurant. We didn't order the dim sum and I will try that another time. We ordered sushi starters which my little one loved of course and I ordered the sizzling duck with black bean sauce. I know duck is a fatty meat but this was so fatty and swimming in oil that I could not stomach more than a few bites. The waitress was friendly but as there were only two tables including ourselves she seemed pretty nonexistent. Overall the feeling was like I was not in a Bedfordview restaurant, I really expected more.
Nadz
Kong Sing.. Good value for money! Food is always tasty. One of my "go to places" when you simply know what you want and you know you won't be let down!
Alan Parry
Won't be back. Service ok, restaurant was noisy due to some renovation, dim sum very disappointing and so was the sushi. Buffet not good value for money at all. Not recommended.
Vee
So Kong Sing used to be my favourite place to have sushi, I really can't say this anymore. The other night we were there for the all you can eat. The place was practically empty but yet the service was slow and our waiter could never be tracked and to top this the was food super disappointing. They have now added extra layers of rice around the sushi in order for it to be more filling, thus leaving it tasting horrible. They were out of stock of most of the dim sum we ordered , what's the point of having it on the menu then, especially the all you can eat menu. This is also not the first time that the above has happened, it's been like this for a while now.
Alexis Assimacopoulos
A decent enough sushi place (from a value for money point of view) but don't expect anything remarkable at all. Only go if you are having the "all you can eat 'special'" or going to movies and Allora is full
Ramiro Robalo
Always deliver Great service. Favorite chicken noodle soup, as well as Chinese take away. Quick, friendly and very efficient. sushi is reasonable as well.
Gary Greenberg
Decided to go he four my birthday last year with the family and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The food however is not cheap for the quantity served but the quality is good though. The is a good selection die vegetarians here. The manger is very hands on and thus the reason for the service being very good. I was very impressed with the waitress who served us and ran around all night to ensure we were happy. They offer Chinese and Japanese food here. The litchi sauce for their fried food is very good and worth a try. There is also a dim sum menu for those who want to indulge in an all you eat buffet. I will most certainly be going back here as the food is not oily and is of a consistent standard.
Philip Duffy
Eaten here on and off for quite a number of years, it's an average Chinese which doesn't really offer anything outside the norm, I can't even say that it's bad, it's just drudgery and boring.... Zzzzzzzzz. Go somewhere else.
Ashley Walker
The staff are very friendly and I've been going here with my boyfriend for all you can eat sushi for a number of years and would definitely recommend it. The all you can eat has quite a large selection of sushi, spring rolls, dumplings and a wide variety of other dishes. The salmon avo cups are a must if you are a sushi lover! The chicken chow mein and sweet and sour pork are great choices too.
Brendan Roche-Kelly
Overall: unusually good for group outings, especially for sushi
Atmosphere: nicely themed, warm in most places

Seating: comfortable, mostly spaced out adequately

Service: sometimes slow, sometimes fast, polite

Food: delicious, good prices
Keri-Ann De Klerk
Was so excited to try this restaurant... and wow, what an absolute disappointment.
I don't like moaning or throwing negative comments around, but I still have such a bad taste in my mouth from last night's experience.
The service is SHOCKING to say the least. The turnaround time from placing an order to the time you actually receive it is ridiculous, and the restaurant was not even full. When I queried this, I was told that it was because there were people using Groupon vouchers.... So people with Groupon vouchers clearly take preference over the full paying customers.
As for the food itself, I wish I had something nice to say, but I don't.
Will not be back, that is for sure.

I must admit I'm not a big fan of Chinese food, but the couple of times I've been to Kong Sing, I've never been disappointed - but that said I've never been wow'd either.
At my last visit - I decided to venture from my usual dishes and I found a dish that's listed on their sides menu - which is odd because firstly the portion is huge - and secondly it's perfect for a vegetarian as it has bean curd, a variety of mushrooms and Chinese spinach (just remember to ask them to skip the oyster sauce or use a vegetarian option if they have)

My companion's sweet crispy chicken was deemed only okay. The times my mom has been there (and she's the fussy one) - she's always said the food wasn't too bad.

Looking around at what other diners were having, I noticed they have some very interesting dim sum variants - nothing traditional you'd find in Hong Kong but I guess kudos to them for being innovative and experimenting - it seemed to go down well.

The reason however that I haven't scored them any higher ...
a) I'm chinese - traditionally if I go to a Chinese restaurant I expect to be able to order a pot of chinese tea (usually in a dodgy chipped teapot - it adds to the charm ), but at Kong Sing I was advised you have to pay R10 for a cup of tea, with free top ups - hmmmm .. No.

b) The service on this particular night was really frustrating. The restaurant is quite large so it's quite possible to not be seen even if you wave your arms around trying to flag someone down to attend to you. They were busy but not packed to capacity in any means, that said I would expect the waiting staff loitering around the front desk to rather be facing the dining room to see if anyone requires anything, rather than having their backs turned. The waitress serving us was surly as hell.

Overall not my favorite Chinese Restaurant, but I wouldn't bolt at the idea of dining here again.
Candy Kane
I was bitterly disappointed when I went to Kong Sing. The service was slow (Even though they were quite empty) and the general atmosphere there just seemed dull, however, I gave them a chance. Drinks were ordered along with the main meal. Drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive and the meal (chicken chow mein) took a further 45 mins after receiving the drinks. The meal was pretty good until I came across a few strands of hair in my meal - and that put me off completely. Unfortunately, that one bad experience has totally put me off going to Kong Sing ever again. For regulars at Kong Sing, I do suggest doing some prodding in your food before devouring.

After reading many good reviews my wife and I decided to break our habitual visits to our usual favorite Asian establishments and try out Kong Sing.

They have a dim sum and sushi buffet on offer for 149 madibas. I usually stray from buffets but this was a large selection of their sushi an more dim sum than you can wish for. All freshly prepared rather than a buffet, to say it was great value is an understatement.

The view from the balcony is the typical yet scenic view of JHB and summer time sunsets would be very picturesque from the seating area.

Inside decor was evident of it being an old establishment with some modern decor to bring it up to date.

We sampled many of the dishes on offer which we're both quick to come out as well as very tasty. Accompanied by an assortment of Asian sauce combinations which complemented the dishes well. The only dish I wouldn't recommend are the pork ribs in sesame. But that was hardly enough to put a bad taste in my mouth on the overall meal.

As Natasha stated in the previous review, they have some strange variations on their sushi menu , which of course meant my curiosity had me try them. The bacon sandwiches were an experience and not too bad, the spicy seared fillet nigiri was a great flavour combination which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The dining area was bustling and the service was fantastic. We were well tended to by our waiter and the manager also stopped by to make sure our experience was being enjoyed. One of the better Chinese / sushi restaurants I've been to. And at great value too.

We went to Kong Sing for the first time last week and were nicely surprised! We had sushi and even if i wouldn't call us connoisseurs in sushi, we've tried many different ones in the past. The ones we had in King Sing were exceptional! They were fresh, they came quickly and the selection was awesome! I particularly like the "other" sushi options such as the bacon and crispy chicken ones! The staff was very efficient and friendly. But the cherry on the cake was the lady owner. We asked our waitress if they sold their tea pots in the small shop at the front of the restaurant? She went to check and told us that they didn't. A few minutes later, the owner came and GAVE us one of their tea pot! It wasn't new but we didn't care! It was such a nice gesture! We will most definitely go back very soon!
