Review The Generator - Johannesburg

Tiisetso
Lovely new location next to the tennis courts. Was initially disappointed to not find them in the usual spot thinking this another COVID closure but this is a massive improvement. Right across the road you can’t miss them. The perfect home for the perfect cup. There is cover should it rain and on a sunny Saturday morning in the winter the cold matters not. And of course the coffee is great. Dogs are welcome, there are two plug points, and believe there may even be Wifi.

Such a quaint little spot hidden next to the tennis courts. The coffee is really good (4/5) and the chocolate croissants are unreal with proper Nutella inside! Just a laid back vibe with friendly staff. I love that they have little treats (like zoo biscuits), a bowl of water for dog's and even doggie treats. Best coffee on Tyrone Avenue and new favourite spot in the Parks.

The Perfect Cup. The best coffee in Johannesburg. Located at Shop 15, Parkview Centre, 54 Tyrone Ave, Parkview. The Perfect Cup offers breakfast, sandwiches, light meals, Cappuccino, cakes and desserts. Their menu is affordable and nutritious. This place is beautiful and what I love about this place is the love of the community. It's a community based place. Their friendly and incredible staff. Definitely will come back soon for Cappuccino. Definitely the perfect cup. Also you can now order for delivery or pickup from The Perfect Cup using the MyChef Food App (link on bio).

This place was such a pleasant find!! The best creamy mushrooms on toast in Johannesburg. Great coffee with an in-house roastery. Highly recommended, especially for breakfast and lunch.

A great place for coffee and a croissant or muffin. Tucked away next to the tennis court it's a good find for a quick cuppa. Staff are great.

I was treated to breakfast and a sweet treat. What a nice setting and trendy setup. The place looked very inviting and charming. What a good selection of food - I ended up ordering the following :- Half Breakfast which consisted of the following 1 egg, 2 rashers of bacon, tomato, toast and jam. Delicious – the plate was clean no need to wash 😊 The sweet treat order was a Bar One Banana & Ice Cream pancake. Pancakes were super soft, fluffy and melt in mouth pancakes. Truly delicious - Loved it. Overall a decent pocket-friendly place serving a good range of tasty savoury and sweet treats with a decent menu for full eating. Will for sure visit them again!

Best coffee in town! This hidden parkview gem provides the most incredible service as well as utterly delicious wholesome homestyle like meals! Don’t leave without ordering your freshly roasted bag of coffee!

The food was delicious and we all had good meals. The service was friendly and efficient. It has a bar type atmosphere so as a family with teenagers we aren’t likely to go back.

Excellent food! The "make the sandwich" idea is brilliant. The onion rings were a bit doughy and so not that great; and the menus are terrible: the white board markers are too thick for the laminated sheet and the sheets don't clean properly but other than that a really great vibey place

We came here for drinks on a Friday and I cannot say we enjoyed it. Expensive, bad service, not great food and proper bad music. I would not recommend it or definitely ever come back.

Cute little stop for drinks with mates or an easy lunch. Funky decor, casual dining and friendly staff. Build your own meal type of menu - you get what you order so no hassle there :)

I haven't submitted a review for some time but I feel it necessary to write one today. My brother and I met for a quick lunch... Instead of hitting the usual (nandos) i suggested The Generator.
It was pretty quiet, 3 other tables.
Had a coffee, standard, not bad
Ordered the chicken prego... Well, it was fantastic! They didn't have the prego rolls so gave me a couple options. I chose the ciabatta... It was lightly toasted and just delicious
My boet ordered the lamb pita. He devoured the meal in no time and could not stop raving about it.

The service was prompt and very friendly. We were in and out there within 45 minutes. Perfect for a quick lunch

Not sure why there aren't queues outside this place. We will for sure be back

Extremely delicious vegan friendly restaurant that clearly marked their vegan items. The service was good, the atmosphere was lovely and the food was great (except for the zucchini fries...too hard and tasteless). Please continue your vegan friendliness by stocking a non-dairy milk :)

Quite a vibey restaurant with good service and food. The menu is a build your own meal menu, which is really nice as you can have exactly what you want, and it's not expensive either.
We were all really impressed with our meals. We all had pasta, one with beef, one with bacon and one with Smoked salmon and we all ate every bite even though it was quite a generous helping! The wine list is good as well, nothing excessive but some well know favourites.
The only downside to this place is they don't do dessert :( and if you sit outside bring insect repellent or sit inside rather

The burgers look amazing! Have to go back to try one of those out

So since I haven't been reviewing in a while, I thought I would try and get back into it. My first stop recently was to The Generator. This a great place with good vibes all day. They specialise in 'make your own' sandwiches, which are incredible. I ordered a steak and hummus sandwich, which I must say was delicious. Their ingredients are fresh and there are so many different combinations you can get, I was in heaven. Definitely a must go to.

It's a small spot with interesting decor, a nice bar and great sound. We popped in to bid farewell to a colleague. There was a nice vibe. The food I had was tasty and others raved about the rest. Service was good.

Went here for a sisters' dinner and enjoyed it! Very friendly service and cool vibe, even when the restaurant isn't full. We enjoyed the design-your-own approach and there is a great variety of toppings to choose from. As a vegetarian, there was also a good choice of flavours. The combined toppings do get a little pricey though so don't get too carried away!

One of my favourite spots in Jo'burg to relax, have a drink and eat some simple but delicious food.

Hard to go wrong with a create your own sandwich menu (personal recommendation is olive panini, steak, grilled hulumi, peppadews, avo and the pesto source).

An authentic atmosphere with a friendly owner that is heavily involved in the day to day operations earns the Generator a 4.5 rating.

Great place for a drink and some amazing food. The build it yourself concept leaves so much to the imagination . The industrial look and feel makes it quite modern and a great place for after work drinks. The service could be a little more attentive but overall cool place.

So sad to be editing my review of this place, but I went back for a Saturday drinks and I was bitterly disappointed. The service was slow, inexperienced and sloppy. The bar tenders were on their phones and you had to ask them to serve you before they notice you were even at the bar. The drinks were way overpriced and I never received the right change... Not once! I was short changed 3 times! Never mind I had to wait for them to get change... So sad, as this is a great local spot...

Previous review in Jan this year: From the outside, this spot looks like it came right out of CPT or Parkhurst! And as you go in, the concept and vibe is spot on! I only went for drinks with friends and didn't try the bistro menu, but it was relaxed and friendly! Will definitely try it out again soon!

Sadly such promise, but waited an hour and 40 minutes for my food. Unacceptable, even in large group - don't accept group bookings if you don't have the capability to service it.

This is a great little place in Parkmore with amazing aesthetics, offering a great start to a Friday night of bacchanalia (kidding, I only went there for after work drinks). The food is really amazing and the drinks aren't keeping up with the USD-ZAR exchange rate.

I've been here for drinks on a Friday a number of times and always left giggling 🍸👌🏻. It's a great spot for drinks after work and if you love your underground music give it a bash👍🏻

Wow! What a fantastic place in the middle of Sandton! This is what we have been deprived of and now it is here! Awesome selection of drinks fantastic staff and the menu is great because you can build it exactly how u like! The decor and atmosphere is also such a winner! I'll be back very soon!

Truly a little gem, tucked away in the heart of Sandton! Superbly well priced and excessively tasty sandwich... Enjoyed a craft beer with the owner on the house, thanks again!

Have only been here for drinks and seem like a great after work spot. The Gin and Tonic is on of the best I have had. Would love to come back for dinner. Love the vibe and atmosphere.

Great place with awesome decor. Drinks can be on the expensive side. e.g R19 for a sparkling water and R50 for a Dragon Ginger Beer.

Great vibe and tasty salads.
Greg
Not worth it at all .. Sorry guys, this is a massive let down. You're better off making a sandwich at home.. Don't see the value in paying R60+
Travis
Although this is advertised as a sandwich bar, the decor and atmosphere lean more toward a cocktail bar. Located next to Sway, this seems like a great place to have a drink before going clubbing.

Great to have this place in the neighbourhood. 11th street needed something fresh. Service is great. Being able to make your own (burger/pasta/sandwich) with such a variety of ingredients at a good price is lekker.

Finally. Please try the burger. Holy greatness. The have been promising the burger menu for a while. Worth the wait.

Beef Burger
Avo
Bacon
Mayo
Melted cheddar

You are all welcome.

The Generator is heaven to any bread lover such as myself. I had a delicious toasted panini with feta, rocket, bacon and mustard source - nom, nom, nom. The bread is fresh, crispy and tasty. It is a very chilled spot, ideal for an out of the office quick bite or to go grab after work drinks with friends or colleagues. You'll never look at a sandwich the same way again after you have one from The Generator. Next time I'm adding more fillings to my bread and having more of that mustard sauce. The music was great and the service was super friendly... ☺ it helps that Vee Khoza knows the manager hihi...

Was not disappointed by the DIY sandwich I ordered today. Fresh bread and ingredients. I chose the olive panini, bacon, Bree, gherkins, caramalised onion and the balsamic reduction toasted as a take away. The service was excellent and quick and the decor is interesting. They also have coffee and a selection of craft beers!

This is the perfect spot for after work drinks 🍻 I'm not a huge sandwich fan, but their sandwiches are really great 🎉 location is central and has a good vibe.

A refreshing addition to the Sandton lunch time scene.

Had a number of fantastic sandwiches here and look forward to trying out the solid selection of beers!

We will be coming here a lot more often.

Second time I've been here.. There's no other chill places like this in Sandton...

I like the concept of a sandwich bar and the menu is decent.

The interior is legit and quite alternative... And the service is real good.

I give it a solid 4.5! 👌

Amazing food and music!! The setting is pretty chilled and if you're someone who's interested in presentation, this place does it well!!!!!

The Generator Sandwich Bar with their motto: "Handcrafted good times" is an interesting and quirky spot with every kind of sandwich one could imagine on offer..

It really is a simple process..

1. Choose your bread:
*Ciabatta (my favourite)
Panini
Olive Panini
Rye
Whole Wheat
Portuguese or
Life Bake Grain free toast (for the Banters)

2. Choose your flavour:
Steak
Bacon
Chicken
Smoked Salmon
Tuna
Parma Ham
Pepper Ham..

3. Choose your cheese:
Grated Cheddar
Feta
Grilled Halloumi
Sliced Mozzarella
Gorgonzola
Brie
I personally like at least three at any time!

4. Choose your greens (everything from avo to sunflower seeds in this grouping)

5. Choose your sauce completely free:
I love the Balsamic Glaze and Hummus.

Then choose if you want is fresh or toasted. Wa-La!

Today, they got their liquor licence and launched their craft beer selections..

*Recommendation: Ciabatta, chicken, avocado, balsamic glaze paired with a big glass of sauvignon blanc.. out of this world!

For more, find me on Twitter: LaurasW0rld

This bar/restaurant is beautifully put together. Firstly the music draws you in, followed by the decor and ambiance. Good vibes all round.

Been waiting to try out this spot for a while. The food was great and there are so many choices to create your own sandwich. I am sure this will become a regular spot for weekday lunches.

Whats to review - every time (3 times now) we make a trip to the venue for dinner its closed.
Why open a venue if you just go home early? ......
