Review Sing Fei - Johannesburg

Leon Uys
Very specialised Chinese place that caters for bus loads of tourists. However walk-in customers are welcome. Try the set menu, it is very good value for money.

Mrs. Penn does a spectacular job of providing real authentic food from the Cantonese region. They use fresh, seasonal vegetables with quality proteins. They have traditional, special meals from time to time which you can request - we had rock cod with fresh veggies the other day which she called us to tell us was available. The atmosphere is great for 5 to 8 people around a round table, spinning the lazy Susan around to share a bunch of meals with friends, ask mrs. Penn to select some good dishes.

A good old style Chinese restaurant, complete with set menus. Food is very good and very reasonable. While some may find the decor very dated, we feel it adds to the experience.

They are open 7 days a week from 11:00-14:30, 17:00-21:30 The best Cantons Chinese Restaurant in town, Mrs Pan is very nice and helpful! If you’re hunger for Chinese food, it’s a place for you!

Great cantonese food. Ask for the specials of the day you will be in for a gastronomic treat with unusual dishes. The chef is always accommodating for those with a discerning palate.
Tasteless, eggy and overall quality was poor. We ordered a number of items on the menu, but did not finish any of them. Prices are reasonable, but that’s about the only “positive”. Would not recommend.

As most reviewers have mentioned here, this establishment has the most appalling service. The lady owner is the worst restaurant owner I’ve ever encountered.
1. She has a full on argument with one of her staff member in front of us.
2. She comes with the sizzling beef dish which she opens prematurely and it splatters all over of us, no apologies but a “oh well”
3. We tell her that the food was average but the experience was tainted by the argument she had with her staff, she starts shouting at us in her native language
I will not be returning to Sing Fei again

The sing fei rice is so yummy. So few restaurants in Johannesburg know how to simply cook rice...
Tried the crispy pork which was delicious as recommended by the owner. The spicy calamari was not so special though.

I am so happy to have found this place! It is the (decent) Chinese food I have been looking for for years because my preference goes for Cantonese food.

The take away prices are reasonable too. But I don't mind sitting there. Went there on a Saturday night (8.15pm-ish ) and we were served food within 15 minutes.
There is no need to impress anyone there which is sometimes what is needed.

Probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants in Joburg. Coming from an Asian background this place is possibly the worst. Bad/uninterested staff, extremely rude owner/manager... food was below average and prices aren't exactly reasonable. Busses of tourists fill the restaurant and they get A+ service while locals get the scraps. Had to take my family across the road to Hyde Park corner for dessert to fill their poor stomachs.

The food was actually surprisingly nice. Although westernised.... as in your typical take away Chinese restaurant menu. I ordered "Chinese vegetables" dish. Very lekker! Mushrooms, broccoli, bamboo shoots, glass noodles, carrots and bok choi.
No atmosphere due to no other customers on a Wednesday evening...?

The owner is a racist, this is a fact. Having been robbed is not an excuse - she told us that the police told her she "should not let black people in". If you decide to frequent this abhorrent establishment, tip well, it's not her staff's fault or policy.

This is my favourite Chinese restaurant for TAKEOUT in the area. I've been coming here for such a long time and I've never had a bad meal.

As far as atmosphere goes, there really is virtually none - so I wouldn't recommend sitting in if you're looking for an amazing and "authentic" place to dine.

However, the food is very consistent, as I've been ordering the same things for a good few years now. Try the sweet corn soup or the chicken peri peri (it's pretty hot). Also, the owner recognizes me every time I come around, which is a nice personal touch.

Sing Fei is advertised as open until 10, however when we got there it was 7 and my friends and I were rejected at the door. The excuse being that the chef wasn't around. Later we were told by another patron, that the owner is racist, because the place had been robbed by black people a few weeks earlier. I don't suggest you go there if you're a participating member of the 21st century. Oh, and she also shouted at us, when we asked her why the place was closed in a polite manner. Do with this information what you will, but try to see how this mindset shouldn't be accepted by anyone.

Friends (black) of mine told me they were just at this eatery and were refused entry. Upon asking why they were told they've recently been robbed therefore they're not allowing anymore patrons into the eatery. That's disgusting.

Hi, well seeing the reviews and menu I decided to come with my family here and I'm sorry to say did not stay to eat. The menu that I saw on this site with prices is very very different to what they offer. The prices at the restaurant were twice as much as what I was expecting So you are welcome to go see but just be ready to pay aprox R100 per a main dish. So to work it out starter , main , drink and dessert is going to be at least R200 per person. You decide if its worth it.

My dad likes it here and he is damn fussy. Terms of Cantonese food it is the best in Joburg. If my dad says it I believe it. As he lives in Hong Kong and when he visits here it is go to place.
Decor ain't jazzy but you get decent canto food.
Plus those amazing custard buns are almost like the ones in HK.
KarmaZebra
Probably best kept as a venue exclusive to the bus loads of Chinese tourists that visit this restaurant on a daily basis. Looking around at the surrounding tables, we didn't seem to have received the same menu. The Chinese patrons' tables were laden with all sorts of interesting dishes & fruit platters, when we were served oily, starchy balls of sweet-and-sour-something supposedly designed to suite a western palate. The staff also appeared slightly disinterested in our presence.

A great Cantonese style Chinese restaurant. If you want authentic and affordable Chinese food this is one place for you :) their garlic seasonal veggies is the best I've had in SA. I was so into the food I forgot to take photos, haha.

There are a lot of Chinese tourist groups at this place. Any time of the day. This is a good sign. As per usual, you have to have an argument about ordering anything they deem not to be suitable for the pallette of the westerner. They are generally right tho. Jellyfish has absolutely no flavour, with the texture of a rubber band. The starter platter is great. The duck is nice. The spring onion crab is excellent...but with all crab (apart from soft-shell) its an event to eat.

It seems that the more authentic the Chinese restaurant, the more drab and slightly odd the decor must be. We had to request that the protective plastic covering be removed from over our table cloth.... the ubiquitous lazy susan was there... much to the delight of the young nephews. The food was great - we ordered a variety of dishes to share, and each one was delicious. I can definitely recommend the crispy sweet and sour pork, as well as the prawn cashew nut. The service was personally carried out by the owner of the restaurant - but then again, our table of 12 was the only reservation on a Friday night. This restaurant deserves more patrons - the food is good value for money and very tasty...

Chinese food is by far my favorite :D ! Having been to China , I can confidently say that this restaurant is up to standards. I love coming here with my boyfriends family because Mrs Pen ( The owner) always gives us the food that they eat as a family and not the commercial food that South Africans like. The decor is odd but don't let that give you a bad impression, the food is made with love and is very authentic. My favorite dish here is the crispy beef which can easily send me into a food coma due to over eating . Chinese people tend to eat more veg than protein, so be sure to try out different types of delicious greens.

The food gave us stomach problems.

Avoid this place. It is always empty, and it smells weirdly inside.

The only people that come here are busses full with tourists. I assume that the restaurant has some kind of deal with the tour guide.

We had the set menu which was incredible value for quantity but not quality. It wasn't good.
The soup was excellent.
Next were sweet and sour prawns. The batter could not have been more soggy.
Then we shared chicken with cashew nuts and a beef stew. The chicken was tasteless but the beef stew good.
It was then 2.30 and we were asked to leave as they close at 2.30!!!!!!!!!!
We'll never go back there again!
Constantin
Food is mediocre and rather expensive. If I'm looking for Chinese food I wouldn't go here again

Our tour operator booked us here for lunch. According to our guide, this is one of the best Chinese restaurant he's been into.

We had the Combination Seafood Soup, Assorted Platter (BBQ Pork, Roast Duck, Seaweed), Soy Sauce chicken, Steamed Fish, Crispy Fried Prawns, Steamed Beancurd with Seafood and Meat, Stir Fried Ostrich Meat, Deep Fried Spare Ribs with Garlic, Stir-fried Chinese Vegetable, Rice and Fresh Fruits.

They were all okay but one dish that stood out was the Stir Fried Ostrich Meat. I honestly thought it was beef! (I didn't read the menu earlier and wanted the meal a surprise and as to avoid expectations.) The ostrich meat was very soft and did not have the aftertaste of liver, which I tasted at the Safari Ostrich Farm. The dish was flavorful enough to make the ostrich meat shine. It was prepared and cooked completely different from the Safari Ostrich Farm (grilled) and we all enjoyed it. It is a must try.

This chinese place is very close to home for us so it's really convenient. We have gotten takeaway from here a few times.

The food is really good! We always get the sweet and sour prawns and they are delicious. They are always crispy and super tasty. This comes with a dipping suace. We also order the egg fried rice to go with it. This rice is so tasty! We have also tried the chicken fried rice. This is also surprisingly tasty. I really enjoyed this.

The owners are very friendly and always very helpful. The service is so quick. It normally takes 15 minutes of prep time and the food is always very fresh!
