Review The Usual On Grant - Johannesburg

Had a last minute breakfast function. Europa accommodates the party of 30 with excellent service and food. We were allowed to add flowers and napkins to our table to give it a more personal touch. Wheelchair friendly. Guests were all satisfied with their orders. It was a leisurely morning and although full not promoted to leave

A very nice and calm place in Killarney mall. I always love Al-Avacodo Veg creamy pasta in Europa.. it's yummy.. tried Berry's mocktail also nice one. It's a must try if you are around.

Great meal options and best of all the food is halaal.

The vegetarian benedict is one of the best things I have ever eaten. The food is always great and the staff friendly.
Southafrican Flyfisher
The best halaal food in Killarney mall, I had the Alfredo fettuccine which was absolutely Devine, good food food service I would recommend it any day.

Had brunch here on Sunday. The menu is dense and very well laid out explaining exactly what each dish contains. So much variety. The food is exquisite. Very hospitable staff and the owner was considerate enough to screen off a table for us as some women were observing purdah. Definitely recommended.

Cute spot with a range of breakfast and lunch options. I had the spinach benedict, which was done wonderfully. The staff are super friendly and the manager was on the floor chatting with guests, many of which seem to be regulars. The place gets pretty busy around midday and parking is limited, so if you are getting breakfast I would recommend coming at around 10.

Would definitely come back (possibly for the delicious looking baked cheesecake that I was regrettably too full to try)!

What an amazing place. Breakfast was awesome. Service was fantastic. Food to die for! Thank you so much.... If anyone gets a chance head to Norwood and come to The Usual on Grant

Came for mother's day. They gave my mom free champagne and a nail file, which was lovely. Apart from that the food was great and the staff are really friendly

Stopped over for a quick coffee and reading time. The setting is very rustic and lovely. Staff are really friendly and coffee ain't half bad. Grant Avenue is usually pretty busy and this establishment is perfectly situated.

Good for breakfasts. Coffee was great. We had breakfast there one day and it was great but lunch was not as pleasing. Wish this place would stay open later it's in my opinion a waste of potential.

This is quite a delightful venue...and you can see it's popular with the locals. I had a Dorothy Road...potato hash browns, poached egg, smoked salmon & avocado...so tasty. My friends also enjoyed their meals. We had a lovely lemon meringue for dessert...was good.

Very very average. Husband had a breakfast with haloumi, eggs, bacon etc, which he found to be very bland. The cappuccinos were inconsistent - husband's was overextracted and extremely bitter, mine was weak and tasted like dish water. I had a croissant with cheese and tomato - they were very generous with the cheese cut the tomato was warm and mushy. Service was super friendly and lovely though.

Absolutely love this restaurant.
The food is fresh and consistent.

The staff are very welcoming and have mastered the art of looking after their locals. Nothing is ever too much trouble.

The manageress Corrien is world class. She is in a league of her own.

Always a great breakfast and coffee.

Lovely vibe in this cafe on Grant. The menus are quite cute with each section being named after a suburb around Norwood. The breakfast was excellent. I had an omelette with peppers, Rosa tomatoes, mushrooms and mozzarella. Simply delicious. Will be returning to try their other offerings.

We use to frequent Europa & after it became The Usual on Grant but sadly we will never go there again. Upon our last visit I found a hair inside the teapot when I opened it to remove the teabags. Amazingly enough there was another one underneath the bacon served with my breakfast 😷 the owner did apologize but also said that it couldn't be from the restaurant as all her staff wears hair nets. And that is how you loose me as a loyal customer for ever. 😯

Met a friend at this quirky coffee shop on Grant avenue. I really enjoyed my cappuccino and our breakfast was delicious! Service was good and it seems new owners have breathed a new life into an already great meeting place!

Only been for breakfast both when it was Europa and now that they've separated.

Very standard - no fresh juices whatsoever, I mean in today's times, how does one only offer "Sir Juice" when you're primary crowd is a breakfast crowd.

Poached Eggs on Rye with a side of Avo cannot really be done wrong, always fresh, good portion and I think under R50...

One of my friends told me about this place and he said it was really good so I went to try it and it was average at its best, the food was average and so was the service and the food took a while. So overall i thought it was very average but its worth checking out if you have the time.

This morning I decided it was time to finally try The Usual on Grant. It has simple to quirky decor and a nice relaxed ambience with friendly service. This morning was chilly so I sat inside but they have some outside seating for the warmer mornings.

I had an egg-White option of the Osborn road. It's an omelette stuffed, and I mean STUFFED, with veggies, cheese and some napolitana sauce. The portion was very big and they weren't stingy with the cheese or veggies. The omelette itself wasn't dry and wasn't flavourless as I usually find when I have an egg white omelette in a restaurant.

They have a couple of breakfast options for vegetarians which is great and they seem to be more than happy to accommodate special requests. There's several varieties of a classic breakfast and a classic benedict for those who do eat meat.

The price of the food is reasonable especially considering the generous portions.

The Usual on Grant has to be one of my favourite licensed coffees shop in Johannesburg. It's a quint yet upmarket and the owner is the most flexible and fun person ever! The staff & management are all about pleasing you! I love their chicken salad, if you hungry you won't be able to finish it & I would have to say the best to date I had in Jozi! Super great value for money. In simple, it's Jozi's Starlings Cafe of Cape Town! #welldone

Always brilliant / great food - great staff - love this place. The atmosphere is chilled and a real centre point on Grant Avenue. Well done

A very simple place on a busy location. The service was okay. The food was also okay. Ordered lemonade which was refreshing and the fried calamari and chips. It was all wholesome and not oily at all. Overall, this a good place.

I drive past this restaurant every day and its always so
busy with people having morning coffee catch ups or breakfast. I finally tried
this spot out over the weekend on Saturday when my friend had suggested it.

This place is a real gem along Grant Avenue. We came here
for breakfast and it was more then what I had expected. The service of this
place was great, with the waitress constantly checking on us, as well as both
managers dropping by. The food was delish and the presentation really won my
vote. It’s really the little things that matter and the way that they presented
the meal to us was so beautiful. Really well priced also! I will definitely be back at ‘The Usual’ again.

Lovely breakfast served by friendly staff. The prices are reasonable.
Love the descriptions on the menu and that each breakfast is named after a different Norwood street.
Marius Van Vuuren
Great atmosphere, very friendly and efficient staff. Personal attention from the owners. Good food. Very pleasant vibe. Funky menu. Disches named after streets in Norwood. Worth a visit when you're in the area.

We have been regulars at this venue for many years, since the Europa days. As the newly branded "Usual" we believe it has become even stronger with consistently friendly, efficient service and excellent food. For us it is "The Exceptional On Grant".

The food is good and generous portions. The service is efficient and the waiters are generally very friendly and helpful. Great spot for breakfast.

I stopped at the usual for a quick lunch. The staff were extremely friendly and I enjoyed my meal. Nothing to write home about - but decent food, reasonably priced and an overall pleasant experience. I would definitely drop by again when I am in the area.

Awesome venue, centrally located with awesome food and great service. Perfect meeting spot as well as a place to catch up on emails. Very creative menu to suit everyone's taste

I had breakfast here for the first time this weekend and the experience was definitely positive. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgable, the drinks came quickly, the manageress/owner came out to greet us almost immediately and thank us for coming. I was impressed by the menu options, and went for the Nellie Road breakfast- 2 Eggs (poached), avo, haloumi and the toast. My boyfriend has the Jack Road - two eggs, a beef patty, bacon, sausage and sautéed mushrooms. The food came quickly, was warm and prepared just as we had asked.

The strawberry milkshake came in a modern glass jar, topped with cream and mini marshmallows. Looked great and my boyfriend was impressed.

Overall a good experience and we will definitely be back. Good job The Usual 👍👍

Great place to relax and have a cup of coffee, the food is of a very high standard and never dissapoints, staff are warm and welcoming. Always a pleasant experience

We visited on a saturday afternoon and were warmly welcomed. The atmosphere is friendly and it wasn't too busy. We ordered alfredo pasta and orange street wrap (halloumi). Food was served quickly and very tasty for both meals with simple but pleasing presentation. Will definately be returning!

Really quaint little place... Such a buzz around, that just makes you wanna stay.
Gotta say I've never had such an amazing cappuccino anywhere this is probably the best by far. Food is simple and well presented. Def gem of a place

This restaurant has become quite the establishment with locals in Norwood. The atmosphere is neighborly with a good personal touch added by the owner/ manager on duty. The waiting staff are friendly and generally attentive.

On the menu you will find a huge variety of cafe style dishes - it would be impossible for anyone not to find something that they'd fancy. I would recommend going here for breakfast or brunch over a weekend. Sitting outside on the sidewalk may be a bit noisy during the week as you're right there in the hustle and bustle of Grant Ave.

To me, their solid (and safe) food offering and loyal following suggests that The Usual on Grant is here to stay.

A very nice example of how rebranding and reinvention can be achieved. What was once the Europa in Norwood (an institution really) has now become The Usual, a personal little place that screams revisit. I love the breakfasts there, but can't quite give it 5/5 because of the inconsistency of the service and good preparation. Certainly will endure, but won't be getting a Michelin star anytime soon.

I have passed this place so many times and finally got to meet my friend here. I loved the cute menu but although service started off good I did find it was difficult to get a waitress to order our food. The food came after a while and was fresh and tasty. I found that it was busy and vibey and the perfect place for a catch up.

A much better improvement of what it previously was! (Europa.)
Food is good. I have previously spotted a small worm amongst my lettuce which was a disappointment and I assume the lettuce was not washed well enough. However, I find myself coming back again as its central, has a wide variety of dishes on the menu and I must say the freezos are delicious and continuously draw me back for more.
Yum yum yum
I ordered the salmon salad and my friends order toasted cheese and tomato
We really enjoyed the meal
The staff are friendly and willing to help you
Definitely recommend this restaurant

Went for a breakfast to The Usual this morning and I was highly impressed with the delicious food. The restaurant itself has a really nice raw look to it however I didn't quite like the crowd that The Usual seems to appeal to. Not my scene but that's just me and can't knock their score for that.

Service was with a smile but a little on the slow side. I had the Dorothy which was A beautifully soft poached egg atop smoked salmon atop a stack of fluffy hash browns. A little bit of balsamic reduction on the side to add a bit of bite and perfectly grilled haloumi fingers in place of avocado. I had a pot of tea so can't vouch for the coffee but my mate had 2 cappuccinos so I'd imagine they were pretty good.

I'll be back for sure. Well worth a look if you're in the area.

Norwood is an incredibly vibey neighbourhood. It's eclectic and cosmopolitan and so welcoming. Those who enjoy a good brunch would be doing themselves a disservice if they don't visit this lovely spot. The restaurant has the kind of atmosphere that only comes from having the owners around. Although it gets very busy, especially on weekend mornings, the service is always adequate. Vegetarians are well looked after, the coffee is great and the people watching even better. Go have brunch there, you won't regret it.

Huge improvement on Europa that was previously here! Stunning menu - uniquely presented on clipboards. Also unique is the different categories named after different nearby suburbs and different dishes named after familiar streets! I loved that!! Friendly staff and the manager also stops by to check that everything's ok. I prefer sitting inside as outside really feels like you're sitting in the busy street and it's not so pleasant. Food is fresh and delicious. Bound to be a popular breakfast and lunch spot - if you can find parking!!!

I have visited this local restaurant previously and enjoyed the meal. This morning I ordered an Iris breakfast with a pot of tea. The food was mediocre and the service lousy. The staff look at one another and no one seems to want to help. The service is definitely disorganised and needs attention.
I will try it again in the future to see if this has been addressed.
It was an unusual day... So I took myself out for an unusual - start- my- week brunch!

Situated on busy grant street in Norwood this place is such a pleasure. The contemporary modern decor is also so inviting! Their menu is named after street and road names in South Africa- so cool!

I had the freshest berry smoothie ever , amazing breakfast (Nellie Road) and some halloumi with sweet chilli!

I absolutely love this place. I wanna try everything!

Next time you're in Noorwood.. Be Unusual!
What a wonderful little restaurant on Grant Avenue with a great vibe. It has a very creative menu and I would suggest it to anyone looking for something different from the usual boring franchise food we're accustomed to. Great cuppocinos and french toast!

Having a late breakfast with the missus & little one. I'm having fresh orange juice, scrambled eggs, macon & caramelised onion on a croissant, the missus a bran muffin with strawberry juice & the little one scrambled eggs on toast with tea. Fresh, tasty & well presented. Friendly service with a mellow atmosphere & an extensive menu!

Went for the first time for breakfast, wide variet of options are available, great service, decor is trendy and rustic, and owner/manager interaction with customers is pleasant .keep it up!

Awesome food, fantastic service and a homely vibe. The Usual on Grant is our preferred eating spot and a gem for our neighborhood. We love the reference to our street names and delight in trying out the various 'street' dishes. Love that the owners are open to suggestions too.

We came here for breakfast. The remodel is great. The service was good as well. We ordered basic breakfasts but changed a few things to our taste and they were very accommodating. Definitely would come here again for breakfast.

Before it was known as The Usual on Grant, it was a Europa. The franchise was recently dropped and they re-opened. The decor is good, the menu looks good at first glance and I love that it is dog-friendly (being a dog obsessed owner and all). I went for the first time since the change a week or so ago and ordered the pastrami on rye. While the portion size was quite good, I was entirely dissatisfied. The main event, the pastrami, was hardly anywhere to be found - at R88 for a sandwich, I would expect to get a little more bang for my buck. They also use a very sweet mayo on the sandwich as opposed to the more traditional mustard which I was a large fan of either. I don't think I'll be rushing back.
Dino
What used to be Europa, now the same team under the name "The Usual". Ordered the haloumi wrap, bit too much store bought salad dressing on it for my liking and the haloumi wasn't fried as crispy as it should have been.
Chips were deliciously seasoned and crispy so full marks on that.
The pastrami on rye was very shy on pastrami, a pity as the pastrami was tasty and otherwise good, and the rye bread was great.
Overall we were quite underwhelmed. I'll go back to try the chicken livers as they used to be very good.
Marc Baleiza
Nice atmosphere, attentive staff. Quick service, large portions, good value for money - soft egg was a bit on the raw side - but everyone else made up for it. We'll be back.

New spot. Food isn't bad, but service has room for improvement. Not sure if I'd go back there again anytime soon. Food portions are great though

So The Usual is my breakfast hangout, the service is fantastic the food is of good quality and they open at 7 :) so one has the time to pop in before heading to the office. The vibe is great.
