Review Munch Cafe - Johannesburg

Such an awesome restaurant hidden in Rosebank. Great value for money and my breakfast was beyond great. Well done to the serving staff. Ps check out the wonderful pop up store next door for December '23 Xmas shopping. Something for everyone

The perfect solo date for plant lovers. Service is top tier and the atmosphere of the restaurant makes you completely forget that you’re right next to a main road. I will bring a book next time and totally get lost in the moment.

Garden centers (and their coffee shops) can be a place of grace. For a person who does not particularly like gardening, but also dislikes malls. I am often to be found at a nursery. Perhaps, because within these places, I am reminded to slow me down and notice the patterns and recursions of nature. Munch offers grace and good food. Thank-you.

Beautiful place to have lunch in a green environment on busy rosebank. Very friendly service. Unfortunately when ordering via Uber eats multiple times issue with food or missing items.

Lovely friendly service, great food and the playground kept my toddler entertained the whole time. The Face painting was also a fun surprise. Will def come back.

Went there for a saturday lunch. We were impressed with the service, food was fresh and tasty. Table was wiped before we sat down. We were checked on a few times if everything was fine, which is great! The restaurant has a nice and modern look, especially inside. The restaurant was quite busy outside. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and food! 😊

What a nice place to meet up with a group for a catch up. Awesome staff. Neat and clean. Enjoyed it.

Such a calm, peaceful and garden feel with great food.

Oscar is a great waiter, very attentive but not intrusive

Great place for breakfast under the trees! Children's play area to one side, makes it nice for parents and non-parents alike.

Hi Rachel, thank you to you and your team for a fantastic Bridal shower. Awesome food and wonderful service. Everyone had a great time. Thanks again for making it all happen. We had a demanding table of 15 people and the service was attentive without being intrusive. Fantastic fresh platters with loads of variety. Highly recommended. We had a wonderful afternoon !

Superb and efficient service, with great tasting cakes and quality coffee. Just not very happy about the R8 charge for a tall glass when asking for tap water, especially when everyone at the table had drinks and cake. Next time I'm taking the glass home ;)

In the corner of a nursery, so very nice corner. Green and cosy. Not many tables and it might be busy but when not busy very nice place to relax. Very nice playground for kids. Nice sand under the toys. Just out of playground stairs are a little tricky for kids. Coffee was nice.

Food was tasty, cost effective and eatery is suitably placed in the nursery. Had Mediterranean salad - Forgot to take photos.

Great spot for breakfast or lunch or even just a beer. Especially when your partner is at the garden nursery for hours and insists you go with. There is also a great kids playarea and it's pet friendly.

Visited Munch yesterday for the first time. The smoked salmon trout salad was nice but not anything extraordinary. The ambience was lovely sitting outside amongst the fragrances of the nursery. I was most disappointed to sit in a beautiful nursery with horrendous artificial flowers on the table. Really!!!??? It is a nursery - please use fresh flowers or pretty plants or nothing at all instead.

Stopped here for a little brunch and tried the avocado wrap which was delicious and fresh. Good area for children to play as there is a large playground with childminders to watch them. Definitely recommend it if you are bored after shopping for garden plants and decorations.

Value for money is 2/5 (overpriced for quality of food, no condiments with toast, asked for butter and margarine was brought), coffee 3/5, location 4/5 good for families with children. Not bad but not good either. Very average.

Food was tasty, Haloumi salad the best! Punctual and polite service and chilled atmosphere with clean and tidy play area. Will always go back!

I met a friend this week for lunch at Munch. It was very diappointing. The service was shocking! We felt we were a bother to the waitors who were bunched up in a group chatting and made us feel we were botheirng them. Getting the lunch menu (we were given breakfast menus even though we arrived after noon) and just placing the order was a struggle. When the food eventually came, there were flies everywhere. My request for a candle or something to repel the flies was ignored, even tough there were candles on a shelf int he dining room. The food was mediocre and over priced. Service=terrible; food-=mediocre; ambience=unwelcoming waitors and fly infested.

Such a lovely setting outside under the trees & nestled inside the nursery. The coffee is good and served with a little ginger biscuit (never fails). The staff is so friendly and always smiling, a big win! The breakfast was super delicious. Hubby had the pita breakfast and I had an omelette. The food was tasty and plentiful. The homemade bread also delicious. A big positive fir me was the fact that they serve "real" jam - I hate getting those pre-packed jams that taste like plastic. Their jam was great, thanks for taking the time to think about the small things. Would go back any day for a fresh croissant or pancake YUM!

lovely setting.. pretty restaurant.. but unfortunately not much else was great..
I called and booked for a family lunch and when i arrived and told them i had a reservation they had no idea what i was talking about. Thankfully they had a table available.. my bun-less burger was rather nice however the rest of the meals were pretty average.. heat wave and drinks FAR from cold... and that ramp? oh my goodness.. i saw so many kids slip.. a danger hazard indeed... i do not think its a child friendly restaurant even though it has a play area with a child minder.. It was super busy and a popular restaurant for people to go to.. we don't live that close so i would not make an effort to go again or recommend it to anyone else..

An enjoyable spot to pop in for coffee and enjoy the activity of young people around you. It provides a space for a catch-up with friends and the bird life who seem to be quiet tame and all around you. Their menu is very broad and in general a lovely vibe.

Popped in for lunch at munch. Not terribly impressed, unfortunately. Food is very average and so is the service. I ordered their beef burger and my partner had their fish and chips. Chips were not crispy. Coffee is okay, but would not recommend their food based on my experience.

A friend and I decided to head over to munch Café for a Saturday lunch a couple of weeks ago. The restaurant is located in the heart of a lovely nursery and offers both indoor and outdoor seating and a large play area for the children to enjoy.

It was quite a chilly day so I ordered a cappuccino to drink. I must say that they really do serve up some good coffee. When it came to deciding what to eat, I generally love butternut and feta on a pizza so I decided to go for the Pollo pizza with chicken pieces, roasted butternut, Danish feta and rocket. The pizza was a thin base pizza which was great but there was something missing in terms of flavour. I just couldn't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps the chicken could have done with a little more seasoning. The one thing on the menu that did catch my eye were the pancakes and even though I had had enough to eat, I definitely had space for dessert. The pancakes were light, delicious and a lovely way to end off my meal.

The service was good and our waiter was friendly. The restaurant offers a lovely atmosphere and it's a great place to grab a quick bite or meet up with friends.

I came with a group of friends as it was recommended as a child friendly cafe. It's very poorly thought out. The baby changing station consists of a mat on a table out in the open around a corner with no sink nearby. There is a very very steep ramp to get to the restaurant (not easy to navigate with a pram). The play area is nice but the child minder was very lethargic. The food was average, I had the Nicoise salad but found it lacked any sort of flavour. My friends deemed to enjoy their pizzas however.

Am very often here, not only do I love nurseries, Munch is a great cafe, a great place to meet friends for a coffee and a salad for lunch, I recommend the smoked salmon and the jungle gym is a winner

For the friendliest and most attentive and professional staff in Joburg please go to Munch Cafe Parktown! I threw a kitchen tea here this past weekend for one of my best friends and i couldn't have asked for a better experience. The staff are so amazing, always around to offer help, next to your chair before you've finished thinking about your next drinks order and just went the extra mile. On arrival, 4 of the waiters unloaded my whole car and i didn't have to carry a thing, they offered to help me set up my decor and had a solution for any request i had. With a smile might i add. The food was divine! It came in little platters of all the most delicious breakfast items you can think of for all the guests to share.
These kind of experiences are few and far between and i would really recommend Munch Parktown to anyone. Ladies, if you're planning a special event for a friend, Munch will make your day the best it can be AND more.

My new favorite hangout. Good food, excellent home roasted coffee and an ambiance conducive to a relaxing afternoon or to get some emails done. Will defiantly be back.

I love the idea of munch cafe, nestled amongst the intricate but exquitely beautiful garden. This is the most memorable component of the experience is the atmosphere and location. I appreciated that the place was child friendly and had facilities for children. The food was tradition but prepared with a lot of ambition. Perfect for Sunday lunch.

Second time around, and never dissappoints. Quality food, good service and beautiful setting, at the back of the Garden shop Rosebank. Great for the littles too with a play area situated just next to the undercover seating area to keep them entertained and lovely childminders to keep an eye on them while you slurping down your cuppa and stuffing your face with a freshly baked scone. Prices quite reasonable around R 200ish for two. We had a breakfast croissant filled with scrambled egg and crispy bacon, and an omelette filled with salmon & halloumi and of course drinks. Nice outing on your way in or out of a a quick visit to the nursery.

My husband and I have been to two branches of munch Cafe – one in Parktown North and the other in Bryanston. The thing that makes this restaurant so special is its location: all of the munch Cafes are located in branches of the Garden Shop. The beautiful foliage of the surroundings gives these locales a very peaceful and other-worldy feeling – something you can’t get anywhere else.

Munch Cafe is a perfect oasis nestled in the heart of busy Johannesburg. It's location within the grounds of the Garden Shop in Parktown North gives it a very lush and tropical feeling. Before you know it, you've been sitting there for hours - that's how peaceful Munch Cafe is! They also have a child-minder on staff so you can enjoy your meal without worrying about your children.

Their food is delicious and they are very happy to make substitutions. What disappointed me a little was the slow service and their prices - in my opinion R20 for a regular-sized is a tad high.

Munch is located inside the Garden Shop on Jan Smuts. After a bit of garden shopping we had a light lunch today. Its about the third or forth time we have been there and it really is a lovely spot inbetween lush gardens and under umbrellas. I have recently started eating a bit of fish so I had the crumbed hake with salad and it was tasty and light. My husband had the fillet sandwich and also really enjoyed it.

This little place is like a pocket of bliss, tucked away at the back of a beautiful nursery. Great place for breakfast and brunch. Decent coffee and food. The ambience really makes this place.

Popped in for tea with my girlfriends - a beautiful spot overlooking the nursery to while away a couple of hours. We had ice-coffees - and this is a broader criticism than just Munch .. For such a hot city we don't do iced-coffees very well or offer much variety in the ice-tea arena either unless it comes in a tin ! There were quite a lot of visitors late afternoon so homemade ice tea or a variety of ice- coffee would have been great. Having said that the cake was delicious and the waitress friendly and efficient - definitely worth a visit !

Lovely service and really delish food! We had the chicken & haloumi salad and the kids had toasted cheese and chips. The food came out fast and was tasty - we'll definitely be back as it's nice to have a change from all the usual spots.

Munch Cafe does simple food well. The service is friendly and prompt, and the venue is a welcome break away from the hustling streets of Johannesburg. Their coffee is a letdown though - they should have kept using Origin, as they did a couple of years back. All in all, worth a visit. Tip: buy plants for the garden afterwards (they're situated in a nursery) and head back home for some green finger therapy.

Great place to go for a quiet lunch during the week - located at the back of the Garden Shop nursery (corner Jan Smuts & Bolton). They have excellent baristas preparing the perfect cappuccino every time. A perfect spot for weekend brunches as well - if you don't mind the kid friendly atmosphere. Have the salmon florentine.

Popped in for eggs benedict. It was raining and chilly so we opted to sit inside, unfortunately the only table available was next to the kitchen door. I love cafe's set in gardens, so the atmosphere suited me perfectly! The food itself was very good. Eggs cooked as I requested, enough sauce and the hollandaise had a great flavour. I requested no asparagus, which the waitress forgot, but they were easily moved to the side. Service is a little slow, so don't go in a hurry, however the waitress was very friendly! All in all I will definitely keep this on my breakfast list!

Munch is a quiet spot tucked away behind the nursery. Good for lunch meetings or coffee meetings where you need to hear yourself speak! The outside decor is nothing to write home about. They offer all sorts of coffees, and I had a chai latte which was good. I'd be interested in going back for a full meal.

This is a lovely place for a weekday brunch.

My mother and I popped in, and were very pleasantly surprised by their large cappuccinos (delicious) and breakfast choices. She had Eggs Florentine, which were absolutely gorgeous, and apparently delicious. I had one of the specials, which was essentially poached eggs on a breakfast hash of tomato, onion, mushrooms and bacon, on an English muffin, with Hollandaise drizzled on top.

It was great! However, their lemon meringue pie is truly divine, and I'm very glad we shared it as it is incredibly rich.

There were only two thing I did not enjoy. The first was a total lack of smoking area - there was nobody else there, and we were sitting outside. By all means, have a non-smoking area, but then have the courtesy to provide a smoking area, too. The second was the rock that was served as an accompaniment to our coffee. It was so hard that no amount of soaking made it edible. I think it was fossilized brioche.

So avoid that, but go crazy with everything else - it's lovely.

We tried out Munch cafe for a kid's birthday (my niece & nephew turned 2). The food was very tasty. I was disappointed that the playground was not right where the seating was (as the website suggests). We were also only allocated one waitress for our big table and she really struggled. I haven't been back since, which is unfortunate. I think a few minor improvements to the play area will help- along with a minder perhaps. The cakes were delicious, and enjoyed by all. But overall, nothing too amazing.

I had my twins 2nd birthday party at Munch. The manager was very accommodating and we had our own little private section for our party. It's a great little kid friendly cafe. I would say though that it is for children older than 3 years olds as the play area is separate from where you sit and the ground is gravel which I don't think is the best material in a kids play area. They also, can you believe this, do not have baby changing facilities. This proved highly irritating and left me and my guests without an appropriate place for us to change our kids.

The food and service was good! They have a wide variety on their menu and everyone enjoyed their meal. I haven't gone back since but maybe I will now that my kids are a bit bigger and the playground is more appropriate for them now.

P.s. their scones are amazing :-)

Lunch at Munch is a regular favorite with me! Draw cards are the chance to sit outside in a quiet spot under shade trees and generally excellent food. Service is quick and friendly, while portions are not overly large and beautifully prepared and presented.

Recommended on the menu are the eggs benedict, the beef burger, and the "parma sarmie". I'm not a tea and cake kind of guy but I've heard from a reliable source that those are scrummy too! Finally, they serve some of the best French fries in Jozi, and I take chips very seriously!

Kid-friendly!

I eat at Munch on a weekly basis because I have a radio show at Radio Today, whose offices are on the same premises, at the Garden Shoppe, formerly known as Keith Kirsten's nursery.

Munch offers great breakfasts and lunches. Their omelettes are fresh and tasty. They have good coffee and tea, and the service is strong. It's a fantastic place to meet a friend or have a quick business meeting.

The children's play area has climbing equipment, slides, and metal tractors to drive. The only point I'd make is that if it's a hot day, there is not quite enough shade, and the play area tends to heat up to the degree that the slides are too hot to touch. If it's a cool or cloudy day, no problem.

After lunch, feel free to browse through the plant selection at The Garden Shoppe, including herbs and indigenous seedlings as well as fountains, benches, and features. Great stuff.
