Review Yamazaki Sushi Restaurant - Johannesburg

We had Hot Pot, oh my word. Literally all I can say. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Would 100% recommend.

Since the time they opened as a small restaurant until now that they grown bigger, we've been eating here. The food never disappoints. Always fresh and full of flavour. A big but not overwhelming menu.
Sara Lubis
Their sushi buffet cost R235 per person and R165 for children (under the age of 10). But I didn't go for that since I've kept my eyes on the steamed fluffy bao (bun)—the chicken one in particular. And the spicy beef ramen, and that was Y'oh! Very nice! In fact, their cocktail, the passion fruit one, was extremely good—a sour, sweet combo. Mango crush was a good choice as well during the summer heat 🍹🥭 The only problem was that the service was kind of slow; we waited for some time to get the food to be served. There weren't a lot of people over there at that time, anyway ⏳

Absolutely loved it here. We tried a few different items from the menu and each one was better than the other. The food is fresh and very tasty. I’m not a fan of sushi but I know this place is renowned for their sushi. They have an extremely wide range and the prices are great. I think there’s an eat all you can option but I’m not sure in the price The vibe is good and the age range of customers is pretty broad. You can enjoy it here for an intimate couples meal or a full table

Fan of the buffet. It’s everything you could ask for in a sushi buffet - hot (soups & bao) and fried starters, great selection of sushi and some hot dishes for mains, as well as a small selection of desserts. The sushi is very tasty. You can grab straight off the belt or place orders with your waiter/waitress. I’ve seen the place both quiet and very busy and it’s somehow good every time. Great option for when you’re craving good quality sushi.

It was a first time experience at Yamakado for me. My friend chose the restaurant, as she's a regular there. She took charge and chose the dishes( she knows my taste, I was happy to be surprised). She opted for one of my favourite dishes: Peking duck, with assortment of vegs and steamed pancakes to share. She also chose a sushi platter that featured mostly salmon as the main protein. Our server was very accommodating and made our experience very enjoyable with good service.

Favourite all you can eat sushi place. Price has gone up to R235, but still worth it. The chicken bao bun is also fantastic!! Highly recommend !

Great spot for all you can eat sushi. The Baos were a popular order at our table and were delicious. They had some really nice cocktails. Can't wait to go back and try the hotpot

Great experience. Sushi was excellent. Service was more than acceptable... I think they are slightly short staffed, though. Great place to spend an evening. Highly recommended
Rhys Govender
The buffet was well worth is its price at 235 unlimited on meals , starts , desserts and sushi aswell ! All for that price . Waiter named France was extremely friendly and worked with speed as it was busy and saw him with his other tables but man was basically the flash well done to him with his service !

So I'll be completely honest and say the chicken and cashew nut with egg fried rice is always good, but the sushi is inconsistent. When it's good, it's good, but there have been a few occasions when the rice is squishy and tuna powdery, however my last time there, everything was spot on.
Chuck Tailor
All you can eat sushi was by far worth and by far 👌 the best. I reckon if you a sushi eater and would like to experience more variety this is the best place to be.

I absolutely loved Yamakado. The sushi was the freshest I’ve ever tasted, they had some great wines and the overall vibe was amazing. Slightly pricey for the quantities but it’s worth every cent. Great place to go with friends for an evening out. The staff was good too! Food didn’t take too long to come so that was great. Would recommend!
Marco Taylor-Poverello
The sushi is always fresh and well prepared. Quality never seems to be an issue. You can expect to wait a while if you go on a busy night as it's a very popular sushi spot.

I tried sushi buffet and was very disappointed. Being Asian, I know very well of sushi and can clearly tell whether the taste is good or not. I must point out sushi was overall mediocre and below average among the sushis I have had in South Africa. The rice was not seasoned properly at all and fish was not that fresh. Both miso soup and hot and sour soup were extremely salty. I had to mix it with hot water. Service wise, it seemed short staffed and my last order was tossed between servers and eventually got neglected. Personally I prefer the sushi of Yamazaki which was there before Yamakado.
Umashani Naidoo
Four waiters in a space of 45 min. Repeated request for items. No hand wipes.

It’s quite sad that restaurants like this have the ratings they do. In my opinion it’s simply due to the location. I enjoy sushi as you generally leave feeling full but not heavy. The sushi at this restaurant is some of the worst I’ve ever had. The rice was so stodgy that it stuck to your palate. Everything seems to be drenched in sauce - most definitely not authentic sushi. In my opinion if a place has an all you can eat buffet - it’s all about quantity and very little about quality.

We eat out a other sushi establishments and when compared to two other places we regard as really good Yamakado is average. What really put me off was the ginger and wasabi being served in the same bowl. The juice from the ginger mixed in with the wasabi is just not on. Renovations they have done are good I must say. Next time we will try the buffet

I would really like to commend Yvonne for her service, having great food is a treat but to have a waitress like Yvonne tend to us makes the experience superb. Thank you Yvonne.

Fresh sushi, great deal price sushi buffet, excellent smile from stuff, great service. Go there and enjoy yourself
Bradley Hunter
The staff are great and friendly, but the owner is seriously rude and unprofessional.
Just wanted to buy sushi rice and was told in-store and on a prior call that a portion was R20 but then the owner decided my girlfriend and I deserve to be charged pretty much double, after already plating for us.
He then proceeded to laugh at us to his friend, and when I tried to talk to him he ignored me.
Such a pity for such a nice place to have such 📦 of an owner.
Rather take your business elsewhere.
Unless you enjoy being judged and over charged by an angry little sushi chef 🤷‍♂️
Monique Botes
The Sushi buffet is such a good choice - real value for money, lots of variety. Starters are also included in the buffet price and it's served freshly made. To top it all off, the service was great!
Carice De Jager
I have no pictures because I ate the sushi too fast! Amazing, fresh, great service and super busy! Will definitely be back soon.

They have a great variety of traditional and modern style sushi!
Tharina Grayson
The sushi buffet is really worth it! It includes sushi, starters, noodles and rice. The fried dumplings and spring rolls are honestly the best I’ve ever had! The sushi is absolutely phenomenal and I will definitely be returning!
The Schoeman Brothers
Yamakado is one of those restaurants that you get so addicted to, you have to go back there all the time. The volcano roll in your mouth felt as if a million little firecrackers popped on your tastebuds. I cashew-cashew was quirky but surprisingly show-stopping. The dumplings at the beginning were phenomenal, and even simpler pieces of sushi such as maki and rainbow rolls were mouthwatering! I must recommend this marvelous restaurant in Cedar Square.
Roelia Schoeman
We've visited Yamakado a couple of times before. Very friendly staff and a good variety of sushi. We normally go for the sushi buffet, which includes starters, fried rice and noodles as well. You can order from the menu as well, so no need to only stick to the "conveyor belt" options. Relaxing and causal vibe, a good option for an unpretentious meal out.
Jan Schoepflin
Unfortunately our takeaway sushi was off - the fish was miles away from being fresh and smelled badly after opening the box. My wife picked it up at lunch time for supper and the immediately the complete bag went into the fridge.
Management was not even willing to talk on the phone and the poor waiter tried his best.
Really bad arrogant management and we will never go there again.
Imogen
Lisa is the best waitress I have ever had! My friends and I are regulars at this restaurant and we always request Lisa. She always has a huge smile on her face and has memorized our orders. She is absolutely fantastic. And so is the food!
Ilonka De Magalhaes
Our regular sushi go-to place never disappoints! Lisa looked after us extremely well and we had a great meal. The same owners have opened another branch of Wok n Roll, which we will have to try, if their website is anything to go by ....
Natalie Lazaris
Great sushi for great value. A great way to spend sushi Sunday. The fish Is fresh and service is good. They have a sushi belt which I really enjoy. As you can pick and decide as you please. Really good for a chilled relaxed lunch or dinner out.
Maeve Richardson
Lovely quick dinner out.
Sushi was inconsistent: California Rolls falling apart but hand rolls excellent.
Cooked food: always yummy. Chicken steamed dumplings are a must. Comfort food!

What upped the rating, was our waitress Lisa. Warm, welcoming, organized and quick! Service is 5/5. Thank you Lisa for being so wonderful.

Raindren Moodley
Great place awesome food , served by Abby always friendly and brilliant on service! Abby is a great hostess. I will definitely be back again.
Nivasha Govender
Really good food. The hostess Abby was excellent and provided a really great experience. She takes time to know her customers and that's why I keep coming back.
Lois Qutob
One of my favourite places to grab a sushi buffet. Quality of sushi is pretty good, the included options are awesome (starters). They include spring rolls, dumplings, soups, noodles, rice, calamari, yakitori and golden parcels. I recommend the chicken yakitori and cheese & crab spring roll. As of now the price for the buffet is R165. The service is not too bad but also not amazing. This is a common theme in most affordable sushi joints. I suggest you go on a weekday or early on weekends. It's a pain to get your order in peak hour rush
Sarisha
Lisa’s service has been absolutely fabulous at Yamakado Cedar! Extremely friendly, an excellent host and made it a really awesome experience.... 5 stars for Lisa!!!
Yuvthi Harrielall
Went with friends and had the sushi buffet.

Sushi was alright. However the cooked items were better like the spring roll, dumplings and the golden parcel. The yakitori(boiled skewered chicken in sauce) is an acquired taste.

Staff handled the multiple orders well at the beginning of the night and thereafter stopped writing it down and started to lose track.

Overall 4/5 - I will go again. Sushi buffet is recommedable.
Melissa Van Eden
Although their buffet sushi seems to be the main attraction, I found the sushi to be extremely average. Salmon was not of the best quality.
Staff are tentative and friendly however, atmosphere is more of that of a Chinese takeaway. If quantity over quality is what you're after overall not bad.
Sharyn Ford
Great to see an updated menu, which is still reasonably priced. The Sushi was great as usual. Our server, Abby was very friendly and attentive. Overall a good experience and we will be back.
Vinesh Naidoo
Food took very long to arrive, even though the restaurant wasn't busy at all.
Then only some of the food arrived, and we had to wait further for the rest.
No communication or attention from the waitress during this time.
Waitress didn't really care - she provided us only the basic level of service, and wasn't available for us to call to.
I had to walk three times to the waitress to ask how much longer for the food, and to order something extra to drink.
Very frustrating, disappointing, and a waste of our time.
Karen Petersen
I love the sushi here and the staff are very helpful. Great fusion food too. The dragon roll is delicious and something a little different. Other food for non sushi eaters is available.
Mark Banfield
We have had many a pleasant meal at Yamakado over the past few years. Last night however we found bland tasteless sushi, watered down soy sauce and cheep and nasty wasabi. Very disappointing. It seems that cost cutting measures are impacting on the quality of food presented.
Geoff Tyrer
First time to go to Yamakado, incredibly good food, large portions, value for money and excellent service. brenda was our waitron, we will ask for her next time as sell
Megan Moore
My husband and I go here at least once a month for sushi and it is the best value for money. Especially if you're obsessed with sushi. The sushi is delicious and fresh. The ambience is great and the staff are helpful and friendly. Definitely recommend this for sushi lovers.
Sibongile Mtolo
Poor poor service. Waitress was extremely rude and inattentive, we ended up getting another waiter... Sushi was good not the best but good.
Wouldn't come back here any time soon
Tyler Barberis
My absolute favourite sushi spot in Joburg. Recently rebranded from Yamazaki to Yamakado, this place never fails to deliver on the balance between value for money, range and quality of sushi.

They have a buffet option which allows you to gorge yourself on as much sushi as your belly allows. Although you arent allowed white plates (or I imagine you pay the normal charge for these), and you're only allowed one yellow and purple plate respectively, there's still a substantial range of options from which to choose.

The buffet option isnt limited to sushi though, as you can also order starters and mains if you wish to do so. To date I haven't tried their mains, but I may someday. This is because I typically visit with sushi in mind.

My personal favourite from their starter menu is their hot and sour soup. This is a pungent soup flavoured with apple cider vinegar and chillies, thickened with potato flour. I believe the yamakado version also has slivers of oyster and cloud ear mushrooms, matchsticked veggies and egg flakes. I've found that this soup tends to polarise people as some love it and others hate it. I'd definitely recommend you give it a shot though. I think it's delicious.

Their yakitori (skewers of grilled beef/chicken), fried dumplings/parcels, crispy calamari and spring rolls are all pretty good too. These are served with either dark soya sauce and chopped up chillie, or a small portion of sweet chillie sauce.

From their sushi menu, I'm particularly partial to their salmon skin maki, this is a simple dish of crisped salmon skin rolled in rice and nori. Its crunchy and tasty. Standard options like california and rainbow rolls, nigiri and fashion sandwiches are also good. The quality of their fish is fairly decent and their plating is consistent.

I'm not a fan of their handparcels, this, I think, is purely a matter of taste. I find the nori wrap a bit chewy and there's quite a bit of it. They have a few interesting options though such as their tofu pouches. Although these are a savoury dish, I find them to be too sweet.

Ill briefly mention decor and service. They've spent some time updating and changing their tables and layout over the past few years. I think the efforts have been worthwhile as the inside of the restaurant looks good. I do think that their current tables (inside) are a bit small, your meal could feel a little cramped on them.

Service is also generally good, I've found that the kitchen seems to struggle with volume though. So, if the restaurant is busy, your orders sometimes get forgotten. This can be a frustrating experience. I'd try to go when it's less busy to avoid issues though.

Overall, value for money, quality and variety of sushi and food, and a great, casual night out.

Yamakado has by far the greatest services. They have the most adventurous, affordable and most importantly the freshest sushi that I have ever come across. I would recommend it to any sushi lover. I will most definitely be coming back. Thank you!!!!!

Visited this restaurant for dinner without booking. Friendly welcome. Comfortable seating, restaurant was very busy( this was a sign of how popular it is) but it did not feel crowded. Nice atmosphere. Waiters were attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu- able to make good recommendations even to a vegetarian - and could explain the various options. Sushi was fresh, tasty and the menu offers quite a lot of variety on the starters, mains and sushi respectively. Everything is reasonably priced. They do offer a buffet everyday where one orders off the menu and items are brought to your table or you can chose the prepared items off the conveyer belt. Point to note -the buffet includes starters eg soups, spring rolls, salads some mains eg chicken/beef/veg noodles/fried rice , various sushi options and desert bow tie. Extremely good value for money if you have a large appetite for sushi. Portion sizes were good. Sashimi and white plates are not included in the buffet.

Talk about value! The buffet option they have had plenty of tasty options and provides good value. My server was attentive and responsive. There isn’t much to say about the decor and ambience. Definitely coming back for the food.

This is a Spicy Butterfish salad!
2 pieces of badly rolled sushi which tastes awful!
I called to complain after an Uber eats delivery and was given the worst evasion by the incompetent manager ever. They refused to replace my meal.

Originally coming from East London and having spent a few years in Cape Town, finding fresh, good quality sushi has not been an issue. Since I moved to JHB I have been on a mission to find restaurants with good sushi. The one place I keep going back to is Yamazaki which is now known as Yamakado. The sushi is fairly good and fresh compared to quite a few of the other places I have been to in JHB. The prices are also comparatively reasonable. The restaurant has recently been revamped and the name has changed from Yamazaki to Yamakado but we were assured that management is still the same. The new decor makes it look smarter and a lot more spacious. However, I have noticed that the sushi portions have gotten smaller and some of the items on the menu have changed ever so slightly and unfortunately not for the better. When we went there after the revamp we ordered our usual, spring rolls, fried dumplings, sushi, fried noodles, fried rice and our favorite deep fried ice-cream. The fried noodles were very oily (this was a first). Also the dough of our beloved deep fried ice-cream was different. It was a lot thicker and not as crispy as it formerly was. I am hoping it is a once off glitch
Oliver Wright
So disappointing. The quality of the sushi really is very poor. I'm not even sure it can be called sushi anymore as they appear to be doing their best to inside as little seafood as possible. Vegan sushi would be a more appropriate description.

The prices are at the higher end of the spectrum and the food portions and sushi quality at the lower end of the spectrum.

Certainly not a restaurant that I will be returning to in a hurry. Plenty other, better options, with quality sushi available in the Fourways area.

Good bye Yamakado.
Robert Pilkington
Worst service we have ever received from any restaurant ever! Disgraceful really! Waiter was arrogant and unhelpful. Extremely unpleasant experience.
Jessica-jade
Haven’t had sushi from here in awhile - the sizes have decreased dramatically and the prices increased. The hand roll if you can call it that, was a shock because it was smaller than normal and the tempura prawn in it was non existent and over cooked - more batter than anything else and in the other hand roll there was more rice than prawn. And although the taste was still there, I can’t say we were very pleased with our order for dinner tonight.
Evee Dodgson
A very unpleasant experience!!! DO NOT GO THERE! Waitress was very rude and manager didn't care to help out. Waited 1.3 hours for food and when the food came they where closing down.
Devon Carl Naude
The conveyor belt had 2 lonely items circling for the entire 1.5hrs I sat there, and the restaurant was pretty busy, The only items added were returned orders that were incorrect.. if you want good, quick service, it's not the place to go. I left before my order was ready ( ordered while sitting at the conveyor as there was nothing on it) will not be back
Philip Goosen
What better way to enter summer than with a nice plate of sushi! This time we decided to try Yamakado. Although the menue seems promising especially the speciality items, however i feel somewhat let down. The flavour combinations are really good, the fish amazingly fresh, but its provided in really small portions, at this price range, compared to similar prices at different places i do feel a bit cheated. We had a wide range of choices, what really stood out was the salmon roses, the salmon was amazingly fresh and like butter in your mouth, the bamboo tempura roll was also good however i think the tempura was way more than the prawns. So average score for average food

Some of the best Japanese cuisine I've had - the sushi buffet is well thought out and you definitely get your money's worth! The shop is a bit small so it can get a little crowded especially when the table isn't cleared regularly. But otherwise certainly worth the trip!
Daniel Moose Harten
The last time I went before last night I had to send sushi back to ask for freshly it to be freshly prepared as at the slightest glance you could see how old the avo was. Decided to give the place a second chance last night and wasn't pleasantly surprised, I received two plates in an entire hour and when my food eventually started arriving, it was served on the same plate as other peoples sushi from our table, I also had to ask 3 times for a glass of water. Overall the sushi once served was okay.
Zani Bormann
Delicious freshly prepared sushi. The belt was full of mouth watering offerings ranging from traditional sushi plates to new creations. Both my friend and I are expecting babies and therefore are limited to the veggie and cooked sushi. There was more than enough to choose from including interesting bean curd and crispy salmon skin dishes. It's by far the best sushi I've had in a long time. The restaurant and restroom is clean and shiny. The service is fast and efficient. Great place for a quick lunch!

-Review for previous "Yamasaki"-

Got the munchies and decided to come for the " all you can eat " sushi. It was tasty and freshly made. The chicken spring rolls were to die for and so were golden parcels.
Not much of a variety of the sushi but 28 pieces of sushi and 5 spring rolls was Definitely worth the "R155" buffet!😳 Service was a bit slow and had to wait a while for my wasabi, ginger and drinks before I could eat from the bar.
But other than that, it was definitely a good choice and I'd recommend visiting if you're super hungry and want to get your monies worth!
Robyn Hewitt
Never disappoints! Reasonable prices and good quality sushi. All you can eat buffet everyday for R145. Their salmon inari are not to be missed!
Livashnee David
Their sushi selection is quite good. They do alotvof fried items in sushi. No white plates allowed in the sushi buffet. Some of the stuff on the white plates are available on other buffets elsewhere eg. Tataki.
Stuff is friendly and helpful. Took a pic of Chef David. I doubt that I would do the sushi buffet again. But I will definitely love to try other things on the menu.
Sushi-Sue
NEW FAVOURITE sushi place. All you can eat buffet is open to the whole menu- dumplings, spring rolls, miso soup mmm... the salmon was fresh, its just the rice that wasnt right. The salmon roses without rice are AMAZING! I have been back over 10 times. When the rice is perfectly seperated like the pic- it is a 5/5 experience. Most perfect on a saturday when rice is prepared fresh and by the japanese chef. Other days i avoid the rice dishes- too mushy/ maybe cooked the night before?
Kevin McLennan
The food at Yamazaki is my absolute favourite. Especially those nights when you're feeling hungry I get the sushi buffet which gives you a fantastic selection of sushi, noodles, spring rolls and more - you can't go wrong! The staff can be a little slow on some occasions but it obviously depends on the business of the restaurant.
Mia Maraschin
We ordered some sushi from Yamazaki through the Mr D app. All was in order on arrival. Unfortunately the rice was a tad undercooked and not sticky enough so the pieces disintegrated as we dunked them in the soya sauce and lifted them up to me munched. The tempura crab maki was definitely the winner of the night and the salmon was really fresh.
Leverne Mountany
What a great place! In a centre where restaurants come and go this little eastern venue has lasting power. Sushi is good quality and great variety . Platters and sushi buffet great value for money for the very hungry. Service quality a bit inconsistent . Hearty eastern fare on rest of menu.
Ilinda Du Preez
Poor service. Miso soup thick no flavour. Tempura is more deep fried dough than anything else. Cashew chicken is a thick gluggy sauce with salt and nuts. Would not place high on a return visit
Crissy Van Zyl
There is something about the term "All you can eat sushi" that drives me absolutely bonkers! Especially when it includes more than just sushi!

Fried dumplings, soup, noodles, and springs rolls.. mixed with a wide variety of fresh sushi!! I honestly cannot think of anything better!

The food here is great! The service is not impeccable and this can sometimes become frustrating.. but considering the amount of customers they have its totally understandable!
Stephanie Baker
Yum yum!!
Sushi Buffet was great value for your money.. The sushi is great quality and you can taste how fresh it is. The service is also great and super speedy.. Over all a great evening out and a great restaurant for the family!
Jacky&Lisa
Yamazaki is a great spot for simple, fresh sushi. Quite often we order the all-you-can-eat special because it works out to be cheaper per person. This special is limited to certain orders, but there is still a wide variety of sushi to choose from along with some hot starter type dishes. The restaurant itself does not have much of a vibe, but the seating is well-spaced providing a relaxed dining experience.
The fish is always fresh, and they have a decent rice to fish ratio. The rice is cooked well but it is not the traditional short grain sushi rice.
The waiters are friendly and attentive and the kitchen is efficient. Yamazaki is a great spot for simple no-frills sushi at a reasonable price. A more than adequate place to satisfy your sushi cravings!
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
Good spot that's been around for ages. Nice for a quick bite of sushi and lovely sushi bar. Hot food is a hit and miss but when they get it right it's enjoyable and worth it. Service is average but nothin g major to complain about.
Irwin Van Stavel
My wife & I love sushi and there are very few top class sushi places in SA to compare to Yamazaki. Lucious and his team provide excellent service and the quality & variety of the sushi styles are amazing. Would recommend to anyone wanting to have a great value for money meal in a vibey setting!
Stacey Faber
Sushi sushi sushi!! I love having good sushi and can definitely say that Yamazaki are at the top of their league! Sushi buffet for only R155 per person and you have so many delicious varieties to choose from! Their new special sushi menu is also super delicious! Nice vibe, nice place to have sushi outside on their outside area! Go hungry! Especially if you are having the buffet as it includes starters, sushi and a little sweet treat! 👍🏻 enjoy the pig out session!
KylieJDV
Been coming to this sushi resturant for years and it's always been my go to sushi place. Not sure whats happened lately or if they got new chef's but the level of sushi has Up'd!! So beautiful and delicate. It was just delicious!!!!
Kimberly Nicholls Kruger
Yamazaki is one of my favourite sushi and noodle joints. Sitting by the sushi bar ordering and watching them make your sushi for you - it always fascinates me at how precise and skilled they are - is always a really great night out.

The staff are extremely friendly and always polite, service can be a tad slow when they are very busy, which they usually are, but it is manageable especially when you're ordering straight from the sushi bar.
Brett Cooper
Great value and fantastic service. The shop is always busy... That is a testament to their food. We had the eat as much sushi as you can last night, which includes all of their starters. Dumplings and prawn spring rolls a must. Great location!! This has always been a family favourite.... Part 2. My kids waited for 30 mins to get served... decided to call it a day and left. Today I decided to try them again. Never had a problem before. Food was good and I had words with the staff about service. The service was great post our chat. I paid using my credit card. The waiter asked me to pls pay the tip cash as the owners take most of it from them and promptly showed me a list of deductions. R70 for being late. I'm sure that is illegal. Irrespective I had to pay using my card and then find cash for the waiter. Poor show
Eve
Good sushi, great noodles. Good location as well, very easy to find in the centre.
This place is always packed though.
their deep fried ice cream dessert is also very tasty.

This place gets really busy also and can be loud.
Kurt Baden Cairns
Spring rolls and Sushi. Some people say that these 2 things are attributes to a happy life and I would tend to agree. However, when you make them all you can eat on a Friday night then it's definitely pure happiness. The rubbish part was that the service was so slow, I could only stuff my face 3 times before having to call it a night. Work on the pace of your service, call me back and then you might crack a 4 of some kind.

Food was great, service was too, the restaurant was clean and tidy. The best Japanese restaurant i have been to in years. Overall a great experience.
Megz Mackintosh
An all time favourite! So enjoyable sitting outside on a summers day- delicious salmon Californian rolls and chicken spring rolls! The service has definitely improved over the years and I really enjoy visiting this restaurant.
Marc Carlton-smith
This is a real value for money outlet!
If you are a bit lost as what to eat, try this place, easy access, friendly staff and great sushi!
If you like hot food, try the spicy chicken....and order a big glass of something cold!
Amit Govind
A pleasant Japanese-Chinese takeaway and sit in restaurant for the best prepared sushi around the Fourways area. Always enjoy the sit down around the sushi bar to enjoy the freshly prepared salmon sashimi or a derivation of that, salmon roses, etc.
The sushi bar is a nice way to interact with the sushi chef and to try something different while enjoying a nice glass of warm saki.
Ask for a crab stick salad which is a nice starter dish prepared with ginger, sesame seeds, mayo and of course finely shaven crab sticks.
The menu is quite reasonably priced for a nice mid week indulgence or a Saturday afternoon lunch.
Erasmus Bart Sihin
Not much has changed since my last visit here, Yamazaki has a great vibe and the staff are warm and friendly. Best known for their sushi buffet now R148, you can over indulge in a number of sushi dishes, although there are a few less choices than my previous visit. If you have a few hours and healthy appetite this is the place for you. The sushi is fresh and tasty, not the best I've tasted but that may be due to the high demand of buffet diners. A nice bonus is the inclusion of starters and fried rice and noodles to the buffet. The spring rolls, dumplings and parcels went down a treat, the calamari starter not so much. Shared with a few friends and some drinks, overall a good experience.
Caroline
Yummy sushi and polite waitresses, Abigial. Awsome time and awesome food! Tried something different, butterfish sashimi and was pleasantly surprised! definitely coming back here!
Megan Lotz
After trying many sushi restaurants in Joburg over the years, Yamazaki is hands-down the best one in town! The service is phenomenal, the prices are extremely reasonable and we have always eaten delicious meals at Yamazaki. Highly recommended!
Maegan
At my boyfriend's insistence we came here for dinner before heading to a movie. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

S and I love our sushi. If we could we would eat it every single day. We shared a Salmon lunchbox, a Yamazaki platter and a portion of Strawberry spring maki. The sushi was fresh and very well made. It didn't fall apart when being touched. Which is great. The strawberry maki was unusual but delicious. Definitely good value for money.

My only niggle is that the soy sauce is definitely watered down and the wasabi is not strong enough. Other than that it was good.

They were extremely busy. So it did take awhile to get out drinks and our food. But they had us heading to the movie in an hour and 10 min.

Overall id come back to try the all you can eat special in the future.

Normally, the all you can eat sushi and reasonably priced wine is a big win for me... But lately this place just hasn't been up to standard... So tonight, I braved one of their main dishes. Big mistake, I ordered the Beef Cashew main. It tastes like a pre-made gravy over a medley of noodles and vegetables... This isn't what dining out should be. Not jumping at the chance to eat here again... Service is great but the cuisine needs an upgrade.

Just been to Yamazaki Cedar again after a while. Very disappointed, gone right down. They trying to cut costs all over. Watered down soya sauce, very bland tasteless food. Slow service. I won't be going back.

This has always been our go-to sushi stop. It appears however that they are getting ruder staff by the day and service is slower than a snail in peanut butter. Excuses of we over capacity etc not really cutting it. Food usually good but takes forever. Tonight walked out after waiting 45min for 2 plates of sushi

We had been before and were disappointed so decided to try again, but the food again was very poor. This will be the last time we go here. Sushi is very overpriced compared to other places and not nice at all, tiny sliver of salmon in the handroll and prawn california was all cucumber and no prawn. Not happy

I love Yamazaki, it's my go to fix for Sushi cravings as their value for money is hard to surpass - be the cravings mine or my four year olds', who is sushi obsessed (read expensive)!

Whilst the service has never been phenomenal, I find that if given my wine and left to pick my way through their all-you-can-eat sushi specials, any possible service delays are easy to overlook and a night there is enjoyable! I like that each dish is served in portions of 2/3 or 4, allowing you to sample more and be a little more adventurous when ordering. Their sushi is not the best in Joburg, but the fish is always fresh and the rice well prepared! Yamazaki is definitely one of the first places I recommend to anyone looking for a well priced, sushi night.

Ordered take-aways and the order was ready on time when I got there. The service was friendly and very helpful and the sushi was delicious. Very good value for money. The atmosphere looked great, think I will definitely have to do a sit down dinner next time

Our regular sushi hang-out. C and I adore exploring the sushi buffet (and trying our hardest to eat more than previously). My plate stack has become somewhat impressive in height and leaning tower of Pisa impression. The sushi is fresh, tasty and prompt. The dumplings and spring rolls are also fantastic. The only downside to this popular place is - when it gets busy, the service can be a bit slow. Otherwise, a great place for piles and piles of sushi.

Sushi is outstanding. Quality is good portions correct, very big variety you can't go wrong at the restaurant if sushi is what you love.
Try them

Great Sushi joint especially the sushi buffet value for money. Service could have been quicker but overall an amazing place to get your sushi fix

Been to Yamazaki quite a few times and the food is always good. First time we went the service was great but since then the service has been shocking. Your waiter seems to forget about you. We watched a couple order drinks and then they tried to order food and no one helped them eventually they walked inside paid for their drinks and left.

Extremely good sushi at this branch. Fresh and in abundance. The selection is also awesome and they don't limit you to certain dishes with the buffet, the variety is always consistent. I definitely recommend this place for sushi! Love. Jambo.

I used to really enjoy having sushi here! However, last night the service was terrible. Felt very rushed and unwelcoming. We were over charged on the bill and also there was no credit card facility.

What is most likely not a unique situation by anyway in South Africa , where thousands of illegal immigrants from across our borders are trying to seek out a living only to be victimized by other foreign migrants. Waiters are forced to work 12 hour shifts without lunch, no basic salary and only tips , tips which are often not even received! So even though the food is great and staff friendly , think of it as " blood sushi"

Read the reviews on this little restaurant and was quite keen on trying it out. Got to the restaurant and dug into some sushi which was yummy and fresh, quite a massive selection to choose from so thoroughly enjoyed it. Mains for me was the prawn fried rice, compared to other prawn fried rices this was definitely better, although u wouldn't not have minded paying for more prawns. Wife had the chicken chop suey which was divine, vegetables was crunchy and chicken crispy. Will definitely come back and try the sushi buffet. The only negatives was the lack of personal attention, the waitering team definitely was overwhelmed by the crowd so they were doubling up quite a bit and dropped a few balls and there was an incredibly long wait for the food. The taste xperience definitely out weighed the negatives...

Great little spot for sushi and other Asian foods. The buffet is a good option, there are just some regulations which can get confusing. They have an excellent selection of various sushi options which is nice. Service is just usually a little slow.

Whenever there's a sushi buffet it can go either way - you get lower grade quality, or you hit the jackpot. Yamazaki is the latter! Their sushi is fresh and yummy, and the fish and seafood taste fresh! Their fried dumplings are to die for and the service is really great too! Money well spent!

Chicken dumplings were outstanding and we have had the crispy pork on a couple of occasions but this particular time it was so hot I was unable to finish my meal which was so disappointing. I'll remember for next time to ask for mild

Yamazaki is always my go to place for sushi, the all you can eat sushi is well worth it, all made fesh and all so tasty, they are perfectly located for me, nothing better than to grab a bite of sushi right after gym. If you have a craving for sushi or just love sushi then this place is well worth a try

The place was relatively busy when we popped in for a quick bite before our movie (The Force Awakens, which was good, by the way :-P). I ordered the prawn nigiri, spicy tuna maki and chicken dumplings. The sushi was fresh and tasty although the dumplings were a little oily. The other half had the calamari and veg teppanyaki, which I'm told was tasty. Service was ok, but the place was a bit untidy in some areas.

Great food. Nice level of spice. Good value for money. Poor decor, and waitrons seemed indifferent to customer service. Good for takeout or a quick eat and go.
Hot Or Not
A great place to have the fresh , delicious Asian food . Atmosphere and decor very basic . Service ok. The highlight of this place is definitely food. I tried Miso soup and Chopsuey. Others tried noodles and spicy chicken. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Also got a take away for dinner. Highly recommended !!!

Super lovely little place. Wifey and myself had the sushi special (eat all you can). It was amazing - fresh, tastey, and well portioned. I would be very happy to back: service was great, place is clean and just an amazing atmosphere. Definitely one of my top choices!
Deal Real
Not so pleasant experience. I went there to have sushi buffet. Price was cheap and now I know why. There were too many rice on sushi and the cooks there doesn't make a variety of sushis for the plates. When I ordered some sushi to the cook, the cook glared at me ..

Service and quality should improve
Yamazakis new menu is brilliant and exciting.
I've uploaded photos of the new menu. I especially enjoyed the strawberry, cream cheese spring maki roll.

I am a regular at Yamazaki. In terms of value for money and quality sushi - you can't beat this place. It's also nice that they serve their fashion sandwiches in portions of two and California rolls in 4s. (Most places you get between 6 to 8 pieces for these)

The R139 all you can eat is also so well priced and allows you to eat plenty of great sushi, starters AND rice dishes.

The fish and veggies they use are fresh, the sushi bar is just about always full and the service is decent ! Highly recommended

Tucked away in the mall without much advertising we struggled to find the restaurant. Once we spotted it we received friendly service, the menus were well laid out with lots of variety to choose from. We had the buffet and started with a variety of spring rolls and dumplings then tucked into our favourite sushi combos. It was all very tasty and well prepared. Very affordable to take the buffet option if you're very hungry and the food affordable enough if you aren't very hungry as well. Great experience, definitely recommend Yamazaki!
