Review Lugz - Johannesburg

Jerard Naidu
Food was okay. It's very difficult to find a good bunny chow in Jhb. A lot of places glamorise by saying "Authentic Durban Style" but always ends up being far from it. Although I really craved a bunny, and it was fair. There aren't many places in jhb that I feel are much better.

Great place some Indian food!! Highly recommended

Absolutely divine wholesome curries - reminds me of durban restaurants. Good size portions, great ambience. We stay too far to go frequently but try to visit now and then.

Tasty Dbn style Bunny, Veg pickle was great.should offer wet wipes, you cannot eat bunny with fork & knife.

Chicken and prawn briyani very tasty but portions very small for the price. Moved to a better location Great sitting area now. Owners very nice.

I've tried a lot of bunnies in JHB and this easily cracks top 5. Bread was the freshest of any bunny I've tried. Mutton pieces were cooked to a delicate level and the curry has a really nice sort of buttery undertone. Will highly recommend the bunnies
Jozi Girl
Real good authentic Durban style food. Very pricey

Food was delicious. I ordered a prawn and chicken biryani and hubby ordered mutton bunny. Texture, taste, spiciness everything on par. This is my new favorite restaurant for Indian food in Jhb now.

Everything from the food the the service and atmosphere was great I really enjoyed the food and the place

Drive an hour to just get a devine bunny and this place never disappoints. The mutton bunny is amazing and best to sit in rather than do a take away as you can then experience the amazing service especially from Ozzie. Positive person and super helpful. Good food and services😁

The restaurant was quiet as we went just after the lunchtime rush. Very clean and neat restaurant, with friendly staff and good service. I had a mutton roti and my husband had mutton curry and rice. We also ordered a takeaway meal for dinner at a very affordable price (R450 if I am not mistaken) It comprised of a family combo meal for 4 people, 2 x mutton curries, 2 x chicken curries, 4 x rotis, 4 x rice potions, salad and pickles. Really enjoyed it, but definitely prefer the chicken curry over the mutton curry and that's only because I prefer lamb to mutton. Will definitely be back!

Really awesome place. One of the best bunnies in JHB if not the best. Really helpful and friendly staff. They accommodated my special requests which not a lot of places are willing to do. Highly recommend them.

The food is brilliant. The staff are friendly. The restaurant itself needs some nice vibes.

The service is here is excellent. They pay attention to your needs. It's great if you want to try Indian cuisine. I'm not a fan of spicy food so they do accommodate you and serve you the mild briyani. The owner or manager did mention that you can bring your own bottle of Alcohol at a charge. If you like taking nice pictures there are nice corners with aesthetics for pictures. What I did not like is that theres one toilet in the restuarant which is used by both male and females 👎

Not too long ago, the owner gave me an opportunity to play at this venue, it was freezing cold, but the vibe just became warmer and warmer. This is your number one curry spot in Jozi. Had my very first Bunny chow that night and man... Im going back there. Highly recommended. See you soon Uncle Pat and thank you for always having a welcoming atmosphere. Looking forward to the summer nights at LUGZ😎

Fried fish was good. Service was very good. Mutton bunny with mince was also very good. Have not been here in while. New shop has good vibe. Nice place to chill with open area.

Never eat in but order take-out regularly. I absolutely love the beef curry and butter naan. Excellent gravy - perfect for dunking the naan. Miss Lugz Douglasdale but worth the drive to Ferndale!!!
Princess Niritika
Typical Durban food, I ordered the vegetarian option and it was very mediocre the mixed vegetables were straight out of the freezer and loads of colouring was used ! The only thing that impressed me was the sambals...

I had a veg beans and cheese roti roll and it was adequate. Restaurant was quite and very hot. I don't think aircons even work. Limited veg variety as did not have veg chillie burgers. Music was early 90s R&B which was quite nostalgic. I would suggest they get more creative with menu.

I have never been disappointed ordering from Lugz.
Haven’t sat in the restaurant but always do takeouts.
Indian food normally comes with a loads of oil so when I order from Lugz I stress no oil and no fatty pieces and this is the only place that delivers. The dhall is so yum.
For real Taste Durban curry, Lugz is your place.

The Bombay crush is good but never consistently the same. Very highly priced

I have only tried their mutton bunny chow. It was so good i was back for again for the same thing. You can get enough. Going there again just now to try something new and the people are lovely.

I find there food quality fluctuates - it's either really good or terrible. Still has a really great vibe and on average the bunny chows are delicious.

I used to really enjoy Lugz food. I had guests coming over for lunch and i came to buy samosas this morning. I bought a dozen potato samosas and a dozen mince samosas unfried. I paid R80 for 12 samosas that seemed quite pricey. The mince samosas were dark brown, with fat and cartilage and poor quality mince, no greens. One of the worst samosas I have ever eaten. The potato samosas were average. It was very disappointing.

We have raved about Lygz for yesrs but seriusly the quality and taste has fast gone downhill.

I'm not sure if its been a change of chef or just cutting corners but not wirth the price in terms of quality, quantity or taste.

Potato Samoosas taste like mash in pastry and had no spice or bite. The mince ibes wrre not much better.

Lamb curry very bony, lots of gravy and potato and a few pieces of fatty tasteless meat.

Beef curry was worse than the lamb a huve potato served in a plastc bowl of runnt curry gravy to which some small cubes of beef had just been added.

Thus is rhe second time in a month we now won't be back

Just ordered a lamb bunny as a takeaway after a long day. I was super excited to give Lugz a try and go with my favorite- lamb bunny. I get home, have a shower and settle down to what looks like a yummy bunny. It was quite a large portion with salad and carrot and chillies pickle. The first few bites were disappointing. Although the curry had a rich colour, there was no real flavor. It just tasted like I was eating something that was prepared with pure chilli powder. The carrot salad wasn't the usual vinegar soaked heaven that I would expect. However that isn't even the worst part. 4 bites into it,I find a strand of hair. Needless to say, I had to get rid of everything and prepare something after all. What a terrible experience. Have frequented my fair share of Indian restaurants and never had that happen! Never going back to this place!

Visited Lugz new branch in douglasdale. My wife's chicken biryani tasted like sand and all 5 pieces of meat in my mutton curry was dry and tasteless. Threw mine in the bin.

After driving from Sandton tonight to try the take aways from this place. Wow after all the hype about this place, even my teenager nephew would make a better mutton bunny. Lacking taste, gravy, meat of low quality and tasted terrible. After two bites threw the entire thing in the bin, my friend also didn't enjoy the sugar beans bunny. Now it's really hard to mess up sugar beans and potatoes. But this place did, what places like this do is they substitute quality off product to be a little "cheaper" than their competitors. Surely won't be visiting again

Behind on reviews... Went for lunch on a Sat at Lugz. Mutton bunny was large and ok. It seemed that it had been frozen and microwaved because was nuclear (oven) hot and runny. Even though it lacked a bit of flavour it was pleasant enough. Would try one more time but wouldn't rave about it.

Our search for the best Mutton Bunny in JHB took us to LUGZ INDIAN CUISINE last night. It's been 5 years since I had last been there and it was exactly what I remembered it to be.

Delicious, not oily, soft meat, the right amount of gravy, not overly spiced but just enough heat to make you feel like you are eating a Durban curry...basically all the ingredients that make up the perfect Mutton bunny. And the best part for me was that my nails did not turn yellow! That coupled with the friendly service of both the waiter staff and the owners, makes this a place I would frequently visit to get my dose of home styled cooking.

Lugz in Randburg definitely takes the trophy for all round, taste and service!

I needed to update my review because it is no longer a reflection of Lugz. The food quality has gone down dramatically, the curries lack flavor and almost look boilt. The last time I was there which was a couple of months ago, I spotted a roach crawling on the serving tray and that was nail in the coffin. I will not be supporting Lugz anymore.

Previous review a year ago (So here is my dilemma, where ever I go, sooner or later I start craving a good southern Indian style curry.

Lugz was recommended by family and they said it has the best mutton bunnies in Joburg and it did not disappoint. The curry was perfect, the portions are big and thus, you get great value for money however, the only let down was the potatoes which were not soft.

On my second visit. My boyfriend and I decided to try some of their other menu items. We tried the mutton and cabbage curry with roti, which was lovely. In addition, we tried their mutton breyani and dhall which was tasty but not as good as their other options.

The restaurant itself does not cater to fine dining but is clean and welcoming.

The service is good but the waiter and the same waiter has served me on both occasions and is pleasant.

I recommend this place to anyone looking to have a good bunny chow.)

Went here a while ago for a work dinner. We took an overseas colleague as he likes spicy food. The food and service was good, an we all enjoyed our food. I even tried their potato samosa, as I am still on a search for the best ones - which have yet to be discovered. Still need to go back and try a bunny....

Nothing off putting but felt a little robbed at the end of lunch:

The burgers are well advertised and punted by the staff. In short it isn't really worth it; my home-made burger will put it to shame, had absolutely no sauce and at R50+ for a tiny bun patty and 10 measly chips it leaves on unimpressed. Do not go here expecting an authentic "Lugz" experience, you will be disappointed. My colleague also complained about bland and spiceless lamb curry.

Tried it, didn't like it, very expensive (relatively) and won't go back.

Okay so I finally tried it. The food was fine, personally I had to add pickle to spice it up. However the bombarded crush was the bomb. I would recommend to make it ore spicy and add more salt.

Tried them out on a weekend. Went with what I thought was a safe option, Bunny chows. Good presentation and that's where the Good ends.

Tasteless waste of time

@So. Finally got here. The food was ok. Not mind blowing. Ok. I may have too high standards, but most people will be satisfied. Good quality meat. Nice strength for the curry. Oh by the way. I ordered the qrt mutton. This place has received some great reviews, so u have to put it on your list. Stars? 3.5 out of 5.

Had a craving for a proper Durban style bunny chow so decided to go to Lugz as they offer more than the standard mutton curry or chicken curry options.
I had the mince bunny and it didn't disappoint. Big portion and the curry was tasty with peas and potato and the right level of spiciness. The veg pickle on the side was also very good, the best I've had on JHB.

Omnomnomm
Bean curry spicy, tasty, the right thickness of curry, 1 well cooked potato and served with a passable carrot pickle. The samoosas unfortunately remain awful, oiler than a rigdig.

Lugz has a well-deserved reputation for the best bunny chow in Johannesburg, and with good reason. While it's a little on the dingy side and the decor isn't much to write home, the food is really, really good. The lamb bunny chow is especially good - rich, hearty and delicious, positively dripping with spicy gravy, while for vegetarians the broad bean bunny is really great.

The rest of the Indian menu is also worth a try - the samoosas are done in a very traditional Durban style and are absolutely a must-have.

Average to below average food. Sit in portions and quality are decent. Its when you buy take aways is my issue-quality and portions drop big time.

Not fan of Indian cuisine but lugz's mutton bunny chow, has to be the best... Soft warm bread with tender spicy mutton... WARNING don't try hot if its your 1st time,Go with mild unless u from durbs...Reason Artist Page

Best Durban style bunny chow we've found in Joburg so far. Both the broad beans and sugar beans were great. The bread to curry ratio was just right but more of the carrot salad would have been nice. Really enjoyed it though.

Best bunny in town. It was devine. the right amount of gravy and chicken and my favourite the potatoes. I love the little salad they serve with the bunny. It's very authentic.

It's a hidden #HiddenGem for all those people who miss and crave a durban Bunny.

While Lugz has a better vibe than most Durban Indian restaurants, it is freezing inside and the smoke from outside tables still gets in.

The waiters are friendly, but not as attentive as should be.

I ordered a cheese burger without the bun. The waiter insisted on adding chips to my words. I had to tell him twice no chips. We ordered no rice with the chops chutney. The waiter laughed at the fact that we had no carbs.

The meal arrived some time later, and the burger patty was over cooked. In fact parts were crisp burnt and the flavor was not as a great Indian burger should be. It was just like having kebabs as opposed to a burger. The cheese was in parts of the burger and was not melted properly. The onion slices were also blackened by the pan. The lamb chops was tough. The chutney itself was however good.

We ordered masala tea. It was a pre-sweetened packet, and we do not drink or eat things with sugar. We indicated this to the waiter who just smiled. We still had to pay R19 each for this and had not drunk it. Bringing pre-sweetened tea is unacceptable.

Added to all this, the meal gave me an upset tummy. I gave Lugz another try, but on both occasions food has been not worth it and iv had an upset tummy.

Lugz is definitely off my list!

Nice Setup, but the Bunny Chow is very Watered down, the gravy is full of water and tasteless.

Compared to many other places around JHB this is by far NOT the best for Curry.

Haven't tried the pizza or burgers yet, will go back to try that,
Ashwin Kandoi
Very good bunny chow. the bread is also very good which makes it much more likeable.

The guys serving the table was very friendly with a great sense of humour and also some good suggestions around good and drinks

We were 9 of us and the biryani also guys liked

worst Indian food ever! Over priced and under whelming. my gf ( who's indian) makes better food on a bad day! There's better places to get Indian food. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I bought a mutton Breyani from lugz it tasted horrible with no flavor.the rice is very soggy.the meat was very hard.I dont think I ever be returning.
Desigan Naik
Bought mutton curry and mutton breyani yesterday and was extremely disappointed.
Mutton curry was R60 for a portion slightly larger than a kfc large mash and gravy.very watery and tough meat and quite salty. Breyani cost R65 and did not come with dhall which was a further R20. Meat was bit better than the mutton curry but also a bitter/salty aftertaste. Not much meat. Seemed more like coloured rice with hardly any breyani dhall and any other vegfies or typical items u would find in a breyani.altogether not worth it for 140 odd that we paid. The potatoes in both the curry and breyani were properly cooked. That was about the only positive thing i could say. I would never return to this place and would not recommend to anyone under any circumstances. As this was a take away i did not bother taking it any further with rhe restaurant.

Great food, great company and great service fresh food best Indian food in Jozi . The price of food is affordable but the quality is unbeatable .

Situated quite close to my office this has become the office's curry take-away spot although eating in is also an option. The food is well priced and tasty, and while not an aficionado of South African Indian food I think this is a great place for a quick and tasty curry. Staff are friendly and the speed of service is excellent making it an excellent spot for a quick lunch when you're on the go.
Craig Nicholson
We ordered a lamb biryani for takeaway and were disappointed at the lack of flavour or substance.

The samosas were oily and lacked substance.

I'm not going back anytime soon.
@MzansiGirl
One of the best places in Joburg for an authentic Durban bunny chow. Fairly informal sports bar tupe vibe, but good service and good homestyle Durban Indian food. I've eaten the mutton bunny twice - lots of gravy, tender meat and fresh bread. The only problem I have was that the bunny chow was a bit too oily for me. Cut down on the oil a bit and it would be prefect. I've only been for lunch but the service has been quick and efficient.

absolutley magnifique, exactly like Ama's cooking. relaxed, cool place. if you want Ama's cooking then this is the place to go.
Germaine Muthen
I just purchased a mutton breyani and broad beans with rice. The mutton breyani has an awful smell to the meat as if its old or they just used very cheap meat and the broad beans is hard, no taste and is just awful. It is def my first and last time eating at this place.
Michelle
Well i would say that since they moved the restaurant itself is much better.

The food, well its very tasty, the only problem I had was oil in the food.

So if you do not mind the oil and you want a real durban bunny, I would say try this place!
