Review Tony G's - Johannesburg

Cathy Brondani
The food was outstanding. The service was great. The venue with a table outside just finished it off. Salad ws so fresh, chips were not from those frozen ones, but delicious fresh home made style potatoe chips.

First time after living in the area for 30 years! Perhaps not advertised much in my area. Restaurant packed on a Tuesday night, with a large organised group taking most of the seats. Overall good food, but I need to find a quieter time to visit. Small cold drinks and dumpy beers seemed very costly.

We had a really good meal with my sister and her family. Totally enjoyable. Recommended.

This is such a homely restaurant. You can enjoy a delicious meal without having to dress up all smart....but if you wish to dress up you can. The food is fresh and delicious, the service is fantastic. The restaurant is very reasonably priced.

Food is always so fresh and tasty, best value for money. Honestly the best restaurant I've been to. All the food is absolutely delicious, can't get better Prawns for the price anywhere else , staff are always friendly. It's my go to always.

What a experience. Was invited by a cousin who turned 70 and booked the entire restaurant. Service great starters and salad great but 5 stars for the 2 main dishes chicken and prawns. Bit out of my way but highly recommented
Mike Scarth
Being a fan of Portuguese dishes, we really enjoyed the old school vibe here. We ended up ordering an array of starters . Cooked with a lot of love and flavour. Service was lacking a bit but that comes with the territory.

This restaurant hands down makes the best food. Their prawn combo meals are ridiculously good. Death row meal request kind of good

Great escape from hustle and bustle in large busy places. When in the mood for less noise. The food is excellent and I love the cozy atmosphere.

Really good Portuguese spot. Great food and service. Highly recommended.

I am not the biggest fan of Portuguese food, but the atmosphere was fun and lively. The service was good, not much to complain about in that department, but I found that the food was a bit dry. Like I said though I'm not the biggest fan of Portuguese food

Best prawns and Trinchado around! Take my family there for dinner weekly

Authentic Portuguese cuisine. Cozy and intimate place with amazing food. Friends loved the prawns, I enjoyed the calamari.

Really good food and atmoshpere, clean & relaxed. Waiter was attentitive & friendly. Have to mention the calamari starter - the best I ever had, so soft & flavourful. Chicken was cooked well and the salad fresh. The peri-peri sauce on table is outstanding so packed with flavour but not over hot - delicious! I look forward to tasting through the menu of fish & prawns & sure my boyfriend will inform me how the specials are as he gets through them- he is a FAN! Tony G's is a hidden gem for good authentic tastes!

The Atmosphere and Hospitality is great. The food was excellent every time I went and the service is outstanding. Vines are served at right temperature. Caring Management. Will recommend the Restaurant and go there any time again.

Been supporting this place since 1990 with Geno. Since new owners EVERY time the order is incomplete!! Then the new owner ATTACKS you as a customer to be in the wrong. Will NEVER EVER recommend this place now

Good service from waiter. Have not been there for a couple of years and wanted to give it another chance. Three of us had T bone steak and had a nice marinade but the meat was terribly tough. Veggies ice cold.

Sadly this was one of the worst Sunday lunches I have had. The average food could not even begin to compensate for the two hour wait for our starters and the subsequent hour wait for the mains. The worst is that no one actually cared. There was no manager present and I will certainly not be going back. Shabby decor, shabby attitude and shabby food. Donā€™t bother.

Beautiful Cozy atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive, the food is wonderful and tasty!!! Thank you for a lovely Evening! I will be back soon!

What a gem in Bedfordview, Tony G's delivers traditional portuguese food in a relaxed setting. The chicken and Prawns were absolutely delicious and the service was first class as well. The only disappointment i must say is that no Natas available on the menu.
Jose Marinho
Lunch with friends, nine seating. Service without problems, perhaps a little too slow. All of us enjoying the food... I ate an excellent pepper steak.

Real authentic Portuguese food served at this no frills restaurant. No fancy table settings or decor, just really good food. Had the trinchado to start which melted in my mouth and the prawns and calamari as a main. Cooked to perfection! Attentive staff, secure parking and an all round great experience !

Another no frills authentic Portuguese restaurant which delivers where it counts most and that is in its tasty traditional Portuguese food.
They run daily specials for unbeatable prices with the taste to match. I have been here on a few occasions and dishes that standout are the prawns, starter portions of trinchado, chicken livers and grilled squid heads.

A small and secluded Portuguese family restaurant. Variety of Portuguese cuisine on the menu. Can be a bit pricy if you are on a budget. Ordered the calamari and prawn combo. Don't feel it was worth the money paid compared to the larger Portuguese restaurants. With that said, if you are looking for warmth and comfort, this is the place to eat.

We were there last night. The BEST prawns in town! Amazeballs is all I can say. Meaty, firm prawn meat, well seasoned and pulls easily out of the shell and the sauce they are cooked in..... Great chips too. First time here, definitely won't be our last - the food was faultless and delicious. The prices are extremely reasonable for authentic Portuguese cuisine. Rolls and chilli sauce when you arrive - who even does that anymore? Family owned and run restaurant and that makes all the difference. Service was a bit slow to start but then picked up and was fine. Hot towels when you finish your prawns. Trinchado starter also delicious, very tender, but the portion a bit on the small side I reckon. CrĆØme caramel perfect. Highly recommend.

I ordered calamari with chips. It was such aĀ small portionĀ and the calamari was hard and looks like they melted a ton of butterĀ over it. It was extremely oily. The food was just ok, they should just not add so much butter to their dishes and also not cook their steaks in the same pans as they cook the fish. I would say this experience was very average.

You know that restaurant that you attend atleast once a week, that substitutes your mom's cooking on a weeknight? That is Tony G's.

The most incredible Portuguese food! My standard meal there is a half chicken, which is served in a pool of winey, garlicy ,herbfilled deliciousness. It comes with hand cut, thick fries and a delicious salad. The chili they serve you with their fresh Portuguese rolls is to die for. If they purely bottled that and sold it they would make a killing.
Another favorite is the queen prawns- so good that you want to request a spoon with the meal to scoop up the remaining sauce.

The ambience is super humble, but cosy and the staff are all so lovely and helpful. The owner, Monica, is always very friendly and can't do enough to help you.

If you haven't tried Tony G's- you're missing out on Joburg's best kept secret.

Quaint atmosphere, friendly staff, great Portuguese taste (favourites: peri peri chicken, beef trinchado, chicken livers), spontaneous specials... Enough said!

Definitely another spot for the short list!

This could be like a hidden gem. Little bit hidden away. Food šŸ„˜ is good. Friendly professional service. Love the hot towels that they give just to freshen up yourself and clean your hands. Some of the best prawns šŸ¤ I was told by some friends. Want to still try the prawns

As a family we get together every now and than, we decided to meet at Tony G's as it is well and conveniently located, safe parking have and the food was apparently good. So we booked a table for 16 and we were welcomed with open arms. Our waitor was friendly and made sure everyone was comfortable. There were orders from Portuguese Steak to Caldo Verde (Green Kale Soup) to prawns, chicken and grilled Bacalhau (Grilled Cod Fish which was salted (to preserve it) and then placed in water to get rid of the water). I had the latter and buy it was really scrumptious. They served a generous portion and topped with cooked onions and green peppers and drizzled with olive oil). Overall it was a really great evening with lots of fun, laughter and one bottle of wine ... I definately want to come back and try their other stuff.

This was such a good restaurant when it was in primrose but now it's moved it is so disappointing. The calamari is tough and has 2 knobs of butter served with it not sure why! The prawns are way over cooked and why do restaurants not serve side sauces or at least advise you so you can order it. The baby chicken was very tasty but that is all that was good. The desserts are terrible and certainly will not return.
Reuben Zasas
Despite the paper table clothes , the food is very good. King prawns are by far the tastiest in town and reasonably priced at R200.
Trinchado is also very good.
Geno's desert special is worth a mention too.

Ok went for a quick bite last night and opted for my usual prawns and chicken. The venue is nice with huge open deck which I suppose could get nice and festive. The owner is hands on I saw her running all over the place, ample safe parking with security guards on site. The restaurant filled up quickly, predominately families.Ā I hate giving bad reviewsĀ especially if I see the owners putting a lot of effort in to their place! But unfortunately the food was forgetful, the prawns were no good 2/10 and the chicken so so, there are a lot of Portuguese restaurants in the area and all of them I have eaten at and all of them serveĀ better cuisine! Note they do not have a liquor license but have one or two bottles of moonshine hidden behind the till, I asked for a Richelieu & coke and politely got offered a J&B - lol!Ā To their advantageĀ the foodĀ is really cheapĀ a fraction of the priceĀ of surrounding PortugueseĀ restaurants.

I love Portugese food and am always looking for something new. The food is traditional. No surprises here. We tried the Portugese steak which was well cooked and the chicken prego which was good.
The only problem that I have are the plastic garden chairs.
