A quick stop for the Indian gujrati savouries to be on your taste buds.... Love this place... The khaman mango lassi and most importantly the dhokla...yummmm
Pure vegetarian restaurant serving both Italian and traditional Indian cuisine. The food is freshly prepared and full of flavor. As a vegetarian you can have peace of mind and order anything off the menu without hesitation! The restaurant is based on the Swaminarayan following and hence the food served is also prepared without onion and garlic. My favourites you can see in my pic, include the deluxe thali, chip roll and samosas. The decor is homely and the staff are very friendly and eager to assist. There is also an adjoining Indian grocery/ sweetmeat shop. The only downside about this establishment is the location on Church street in Mayfair. Not the safest of areas and parking is extremely limited. Still, if you're willing to brave that, then you can at least experience yummy food! Oh and they get pretty busy on weekends and hence dont accept bookings so get there soon to avoid long waiting times.

Great place for authentic indian vegetarian food with Gujerati flavors . Excellent mix of indian spices with Italian dishes and options normally not available to vegetarians like gnocchi and other stuffed pasta. Great pizza options and tastes. My favourite is the sombrero. The deluxe Thali is also a great option which includes starters as well as a sweet srikand at the end ..
Simple and unassuming Vegetarian delight....the thalis are the best value meals in Joburg...super tasty and super filling. Service can be a little off mark at times though. Please also don’t go to this place for the ambience, its a simple canteen like joint...but good wholesome veggie food.
This vegetarian restaurant is certainly a hidden gem. As we pulled up I was quite concerned as it looked like a mere retail shop and I even pondered turning back. Once you get to the front counter you see that there is a large dining area to your right. The food was delicious and not too overpowering. The veg thali is quite filling and can even be shared by two. The dosas are delicious and the paneer in the dosa resembled egg however this was just with appearance. The idli Sambhar was delicious and authentic. I recommend this hidden gem to anyone looking to explore veg cuisine.
Perfect place to have a vegetarian treat . The jalapeño poppers are amazing and extremely hot. Love the pizzas the most. Great combinations. The Sombrero is my favorite. It's like nachos on a pizza. The only downfall is it's location. Fordsburg
This is a vegetarians delight. Fully veg menu from pizzas to pastas with an Indian twist. The masala dosas are fantastic. They offer the usual curries all North Indian style. Very reasonably priced. No alcohol is served at the store but there are tasty lassis and milkshakes. Service is good. Deserves a 4 rating but based on the location I have given it a 3.5 ... it's in fordsburg where parking is not easily available and not very safe to walk about. The Indian grocery store is attached to the restaurant for added convenience so it's pretty much a one stop shop.
The food is excellent here, and the only Indian restaurant I know that is 100% vegetarian which makes it very easy for me. Wide selections of foods, including Western foods such as pizza and lasagne. The dosa and the samosas are my favorites!
The price is also very reasonable, friendly staff too.
A charming hidden gem. It's not fancy. But the staff are friendly, it location is authentic, the portions not too big, the pricing reasonable, the flavours impeccable, and given its a vegetarian offering...difficult to beat.
Best vegetarian curry in Joburg. Incredibly reasonable prices. Rotis and masala chips are outstandingly good 😊 well worth the trip to Mayfair
Shayona is pure vegetarian restaurants run by BAPS organisation. They provide great desserts and snacks basically in Gujrati style. I delight on their laddoo and Kaju Katli. The snacks are nice but not all items are nice. I liked the Bhel Puri and Veg Thali along with Sweet Lassi. The prices are very cheap and you can try a lot of new stuff at this restaurants. Thanks
I found this place after a Google search for best vegetarian restaurants in Johannesburg. I had the deluxe lunch meal which included four different kind of veggie curries and roti and samoosas. Super tasty and only R65. It's not in the posh upscale part of town but the adventure made the trip a bonus. I will definitely be back for more
If you want a beautifully made vegetarian curry, Shayona is the place to go. Their panneer curry and roti is to die for. I've had days where I crave it and then go and get a takeaway. Their sweet meats are really good too and they are quite reasonably priced
I absolutely love Shayona's. The food there is so amazing and the portions are just right. Their paneer & roti is my favourite. I also love getting sweet meats from here. The service is great too, very friendly people!
July 11 lunch: One of our friends who stay in Johannesburg took us to Shayona. At the entrance, there is a shop which sells Indian sweets and food stuff. The ambience is very simple and busy. You will find the place full of Indians but I was surprised to see few tables occupied by locals. The range of food available is good. The quality is quite good in some cases and strictly okay in case of non Indian food. The taste is good. The pizza though was nice and crisp. Try the veg samoosa. Gulab jamun in Johannesburg - really nice. A good place to have decent quality Indian food.
If you looking for cheap vegetarian food which you can takeaway or have a quick meal at this is a place to go. They have a wide selection of curries, pastas and pizzas.
We usually order the rustica or Hawaiian pizza which is a steal at R58.
I visited for a sit down meal for a change. We had the crumbed mushrooms which I found had a two thick batter and didn't enjoy, the jalepeno poppers were extremely hot.
For mains we ordered the deluxe platter which comes with three samoosas, four curries, rice, roti, salad and dessert for R65. This is more than enough food for two people.
The pastas were a bit of a miss for me, the arriabiata pasta tasted like tomato purée from a can and the cannelloni while rich had way too much spinach and hardly any mushrooms or olives.
I enjoy the paneer and pizzas here so give that a go if you in the area. Don't forget to pick up some sweet meats on your way out!

We often go here because majority of my family is vegetarian. The prices are extremely reasonable and service is usually quick. The Paneer curry is delicious! The sweet meats are also really delicious!
Rarely do I give a place a 5 rating. I go all the way and rate this place 5 - just because I have nothing to complain and I thoroughly enjoyed the Indian-ness that overflows out here!
An Indian Colleague at work gave me this option when I told him that I was eating a little too much meat. Also, I was craving for Kachoris and Dhoklas! I was certain I had to wait to get back home and eat it - but, hey, it looks as though Indians in Jo'berg are pretty lucky. Home Cooked Food is certainly available!
Kept back the whole of Sunday just to drive 20 Kms here, eat and drive back and sleep. And the plan worked perfectly well!
Ambiance : Attached to a Medium-sized Indian Grocery / General store - all the ready-mixes, spices and other specific Indian Brands are stacked in one corner of the shop. The other side is their restaurant. Partly open kitchen.
The menu contains everything - right from the South Indian Dosas, Idlis and Vadas to the Gujju Dhoklas and a Royal North Indian Meal!
Note : They do not use Onion or Garlic in their cooking (the Jain way of eating) - this was new to me, never tried it before - but, trust me - the good taste remains.
What we Ordered :
*Chaas : Perfect! Nice tall glass. right amount of Masala and Salt.
*Deluxe Thali : Contains 2 Samosas or Kachoris, Aloo (Potato) Masala, Black Dhal, Mutter Panneer Sabji (Cottage Cheese and Green Peas Curry), three rotis and boiled Basmati Rice, and a Kheer as a sweet. All of this tasted just like it had to. A Special Mention for the thin and soft rotis and the well cooked Basmati Rice. The Panneer was soft. And the Kachoris were mouth watering.
Took away a Dhokla for Dinner - 8 pieces with a lot of green chilli and coriander. I missed the sweet chutney for it, though. A little extra oil - but it was fine.
After all - food without Onions or Garlic can taste incredibly well!
Cost : The Deluxe Meal costs 65 Rands. The Dhokla costs 15 rands. C'mon! This is like so very decently priced - for the quantity and quality. It will make you think that other Indian Restaurants in the city are a rip off.
Service : First Class, again! Food comes to the table fast and your specifications are understood by the Non-Indian waiters well.
Bottomline : This meal will remain as the best I ever had on this trip to Jo'berg. And ofcourse, if you want a Vegetarian Indian meal, here is where you have to head. Home Cooked Food!
As I eat vegetables every Monday for religious purposes, I make an effort of actually driving to this #HiddenGem on a Sunday, just so to make sure my Mondays are good!
You'd be surprised that this restaurant does not use average ingredients like garlic or onions, and in all honesty, even on their devine pizza and pasta dishes, you don't notice its missing!!
Plus having burfee next door is always a positive!!
Discovered Shayona on a sight seeing walking tour of Mayfair. An absolute gem of a place. Took the family thrice in one month (including my vegan cousin, visiting from Ireland - she was thrilled!) and still plan on many more visits. Curries are a dream and the options are endless, the vegetarian pizzas are super tasty. Its impossible to leave without a selection of sweet meats. Everything is delicious!
"Home food away from Home" - would have been the tag line if I owned this place, but I don't hence this review. So as my fictional tag line says, if you're an Indian, particularly if you're a Vegetarian Indian then you must make this a weekly destination. I love the concept of takeaways by size (i.e. Small, Medium and Large). They offer you around 6 options of vegetable curries / dal / sambhar which you can chose to takeaway in one of the 3 available sizes. Compliment the same with the thin roti's or rice and you're sorted.
Pricing is equally delicious and 2 Large Veg dishes + 1 Large Dal with 1 Large Rice would cost around ZAR 250, this will easily last you 4 meals (relatively speaking - lasted me 4 meals)
They do have a dining area, which I have utilized just once so won't be commenting on that, however I will vouch for the takeaway options.
Enjoy the Home Away from Home experience.
Vegetarian restaurants are few and far between in central Johannesburg so if you’ve found Shayona, and if you are “pure veg”, you’ve made a good find and will probably find yourself going back often.
My favorites on the menu is Masala Dosa. I can recommend the Mango Lassi and the Pizzas are yum.
The waiters have to be “managed” so that they pay attention to you but once you have that sorted, you are set.
The meals are very reasonably priced and the quality of the meals really great.
The interior is basic and the space if divided between the restaurant and a small super market with a take away section.
After your meal, you just have to take a browse through the super market which is filled with all kinds of specialties, from CDs and books to cashew nuts, camphor blocks and Ayurvedic products. The only decision you have to make is whether to buy burfis for while you browse through the supermarket, or to take home at the end.
Shayonas - enjoy!
This is my boyfriend's favourite Indian restaurant so I visit Shayona whenever I am in the Fordsburg area.
They have delicious pure vegetarian curries that are already cooked. I generally choose my meals from here and order a paratha. The parathas are absolutely amazing and soft. Although I generally order the curries, there is a wider menu and there's a pizzeria which seems quite popular.
I must warn you though that Shayona's specialises in Gujarati cuisine so some of the food is an acquired taste - it's not at all like the North Indian cuisine found in most Indian restaurants. But for the price, you might want to try it out. The curry meals work out to about R30 depending on what you order.
Before you leave, don't forget to take some sweetmeats and savoury snacks home.
Best Vegetarian Food in JHB, Well Priced and Interesting!
Oh, Shayona, how I love thee! I first visited Shayona years ago before it had a revamp. In general the food is absolutely excellent. Their thalis will fill you up for ages. They do an excellent dosa, though the uttapam is not quite as good. On the weekend they have specials such as Dai Vada, Bhel Puri, and so on. The Mango Lassi is good but too sweet. I highly recommend those. It's all vegetarian, so this is paradise for veggies. If you're not in the mood for Indian, then have a pizza :)
Shayona is incredibly affordable. If your'e eating as a group and sharing things, you can easily fill up for 50-60 rand per person which is pretty amazing. Service is a little slow, but nothing too serious. The decor is functional.
Once you're done with your meal, you can browse the window for Indian sweets, look at Ayurvedic products by Himalaya, and do shopping for any of your Indian food staples and spices. Everything is well priced. You can also get take away food at the counter -- do check on freshness though, since a few weeks ago I was given a paneer dish which was definitely past its sell by date.
Shayona gets VERY packed on the weekends, and you will often have to queue for a table, if you arrive over lunch hour. It's worth the wait though! Sadly during the week it closes about 730pm, so difficult to get there in time after work.
The car guards are overly enthusiastic and somewhat aggressive, so be sure to have your tip ready to hand.
I had a fantastic experience at Shayona Mayfair. The service was exceptional, and the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. I was particularly impressed by their sweet lassi drink, which was absolutely amazing. Additionally, their paneer dish was delicious and truly stood out. I highly recommend Shayona Mayfair for its excellent service, delightful beverages, and flavorful cuisine.
Decent vegetarian food. Had the cannelloni. Thought it was ok, somewhat bland. Next time I’ll stick to the Indian food. I got some take aways - the curries were excellent. Well priced food. Good service. It was somewhat busy when we went there around 1 on a Sunday afternoon. Parking can be a bit of a mission. The area itself feels dodgey.
The place can get busy at times. There is street parking. It's been safe to park so far. There is a variety of delicious Indian and Italian vegetarian/vegan foods. Strictly no garlic or onion. Cakes, sweetmeats, savories, indian groceries also avail.
Pure vegetarian restaurant serving both Italian and traditional Indian cuisine. The food is freshly prepared and full of flavor. As a vegetarian you can have peace of mind and order anything off the menu without hesitation! Some of the food is nice. Good for value. Friendly staff. Paneer curry is nice.
Good range of sweet meats, take away and snacks
Apart from it being on the busiest Street in Mayfair, the service is excellent and kind.
There is a large variety of cooking items but it's the FOOD That keeps me coming back. Their delicious vegetarian meals are simply a wonderful treat!
Amazing vegetarian food, ingredients, spices, and sweetmeats. Flavour, fragrance, and family. What an absolute treat and heaven of taste!
Recently renovated. I missed the restaurant.
Great vegetarian Indian food store. They no longer have a restaurant but only for takeaways. They have also retained the grocery section: nuts, spices, beans, lentils etc. Also frozen foods: veggies burgers, halloumi items and Indian beverages.
Great service from Pamela, thanks
Always a great experience. Very well stocked on vegetarian freshly prepared food, sweet and savory delights. Further, you will find a good variety of spices, vegetarian dry and frozen products, beans, lentils, rice, soya etc. Also cater for ekadasi ingredients.

One of the finest Gujarati veg food near fordsburg(Mayfair). Parking by the road side. Get some good Indian sweets.very authentic. On Sundays they have special items. Not too much option but very good selection. Rate is also very cheap.
The decor is not much, but the food is absolutely the best vegetarian food in the city. And because I don't eat garlic or onions, I was extra impressed. Their food is prepared with so much love. Ask for William, the Waitron. He's super friendly.
