Review Namak Indian Resturant - Johannesburg

Third visit to the restaurant and the experience just gets better. We ordered the Hara bhara kebabs and paneer tikka for starters and chana masala and paneer masala for the main course. The food is absolutely authentic. Our server Fortune was helpful and owners Raj and Neelam were super friendly.

I come to Namak mostly on Saturdays for the Indian food cuisine buffet because it's an opportunity to taste a lot of different dishes at once at R140, which is a great deal. The buffet menu changes each week, I really recommend it. Drink wise, I really recommend a mango Lasso. The service is great all the time, and I've never been disappointed.😁

Raj is an absolute gem, we had our daughters engagement party at Namak and let me say it was an experience we will never forget, the food from the starters to the mains was exceptional, thank you to Raj and his team for an unforgettable night.

Super helpful staff, when I collected my order they forgot my starter. However, they we’re kind enough to have it delivered to my place after I phoned later that afternoon. Food was also delicious.

If you are looking for a proper English curry full of flavour, this is the place. Proper peshwari naan and super reasonable spice levels. Delicious

Very good value for money. Great range of curries, including vegetarian. Try the buffet on Saturday night.

Great, fresh food and prompt service.

The staff are just so attentive and kind and no effort is spared to make fresh and excellent food for both meat eaters and vegetarians.

Good company, food was fine, but not out of this world, service on the slow side, atmosphere, maybe cos a rugby match on the go, helped create carnival mode with Boks winning. Namak was tasteful.

My kids and I went to Nanak Craighall for their Mother's Day buffet. Good selection of vegetarian starters, but lacked vegetarian main with there being only 1 option. However, the food and the service was great.

My husband and I decided to order Namak through Uber Eats to try something new. We had the veg samosas, onion bhaji’s, butter chicken curry and some naans. Our samosas were crispy

and spiced beautifully, the bhajis were all onion and spice and not all flour (awesome!) and the curry was delish! As a first experience, specifically from Uber Eats, we will definitely be back for more! Thank you and well done!

Disastrous visit !! We ordered Lamb Biryani and Palak Paneer MILD TO MEDIUM which was EXTRA HOT and we were unable to eat. We asked them to change the Palak Paneer, but they just added oil or yoghurt and served it again. Wastage of money.

Pit stop for Indian Cuisine.

Pros
1)Amazing choices of Indian food(Especially the Paneer curries)
2)You would love to come back in terms of Taste and Quality.
3)Nice ambient location

Cons
1)Should cater to home deliveries especially on the weekends.

Good food but sadly the online menu here is out of date. We went there for Bunny chow as the menu showed they have it but they don’t actually serve it there. Still had good food just made an alternate choice. Menu update needs on the app.

Most disappointing . Samosas dough was salty, naan was inedible, lamb briyani was tough and tasteless, as was the chicken dal ghost and lamb madras. Menu states that tandoori items take 35 minutes to prepare - ours wasn’t ready after 50 minutes! Food ordered medium was fiery , while dishes ordered mild were flavourless.

The best curry we have ever had - and we live in kzn!

Every element was fresh and curated - quite remarkable.

Will be a regular when we are in JHB.

Had a delicious chicken bedami, almond flavoured, 100% better than normal Indian chow. Ivan have us amazing service. Also sorted plus out with his special beverage.

Really delicious authentic Indian dishes, our favourite! We try something different each time, and we are never disappointed. The food has become even better over the last while.

One of the hidden gems for Indian food in the city. Palak paneer, Jeera Aloo and Chicken tikka biryani are our favourites. We normally do takeaway

I've never sat down here for a meal, only ever got delivery. The restaurant itself is very basic, but their food is delish! Food is a tad on the spicy side, so order mild if you're cautious about heat. Their portions are also generous and are perfect for sharing.

Wonderful and great service. Tried a new dish ... chicken Rogan Josh was delicious!! Always friendly and tasty dishes. We will be back again.

First time ever we discovered and enjoyed chicken budami was at Namak. The owner is a wonderful host and the food is simply delicious. Go try it out!

We loved Namak. The cauliflower starter is the bomb: deep fried with soya and other spices - amazing.

Otherwise the service and the food are very good.

Outstanding must have the pepper ghobi an unbelievable surprise my lamb vindaloo was mouth-watering together with the butter roti even down to the illy coffee
Caroline Rimmer
Whether eating in or having a take away, the food is outstanding! Favorite dishes are chicken korma, lamb korma and butter chicken. Service is always friendly and efficient. I highly recommend this dining experience.

Try Ivan's special - really delicious vegetarian starter or main course option - (cauliflower based) - really gorgeous! Worth visiting or having it delivered. Thanks Namak and Ivan.

What a lovely Sunday lunch experience. Guided by the expert recommendations of Ivan, Namak's front-of-house, we enjoyed some of the best Indian food around. Looking forward to more of the same...soon!

The place looks welcoming from the outside though it was empty we went in, had a seat and the menus were brought to us.

After ordering, the food came out and it was really great. Full of flavour, rich taste, not too string, how Indian good should be.

From the lamb to the biryani, it was an overall success. Throughout the meal the manager and waiter came to check on us, not being over bearing, but after our meal the waiter had left us waiting for such a long time before bringing the bill.

We sat and waited, the table was cleared and we were only 1 or two occupied tables. Strange...

Overall, great food, so I would go back.

This restaurant has a new chef and rates among the very best authentic Indian cuisine available - and that includes some of the best food we tasted on numerous visits to India. We have tested Namak over a few visits and it has impressed on every occasion. We are pescatarians and there are more than enough fish and veg dishes available to satisfy our somewhat picky palates. Pepper Gobi (cauliflower) is a speciality of Namak's chef and it arrives hot and crispy with a meaty texture so tasty I have heard people who don't like cauliflower comment that they could eat it everyday in this form. The samoosas too are like no other. Veg samoosas are similar to the variety one gets in India but Namak's version is superbly spiced and therefore far tastier and the sublime cheese-and-onion variety has become a bit of a problematic addiction. We prefer to be surprised by food and manager Ivan simply asks what we feel like eating and then lays on a feast where all the dishes compliment one another. We have had various prawn curries at Namak but the one that stands out is a generous portion of good sized prawns smothered in a smooth coconut milk sauce so finely spiced it accentuates the prawn flavour rather than drowns it out. Another memorable speciality dish is an unusual fish curry served with slices of raw onion - the onion works to intensify the flavour-rich spices and the spices tone down the strong onion flavour. I am a BIG fan of potato curry and the various forms that Ivan has had the chef concoct for us will have us returning again and again. As if by magic, Namak's chef can turn an average potato into something so smooth and waxy it melts in one's mouth and then this terrific texture is combined with various spicy sauces so good it's difficult to pick a favourite. The advantage of asking Ivan to recommend dishes is that he often will supply something special that is not on the substantial menu. The service is excellent and charming, if you are lucky enough to be served by Trifena (Noma). Ambience is good too reflecting the quiet nature of the suburb. Wine list is average but you can bring-your-own and pay a reasonable corkage fee.

Mar 10 dinner: Our hunt for good Indian restaurants in Jo'burg made us drive all the way to Craighall last night and try the food from this restaurant.
I must say it was worth it.

They had a limited seating area inside and a small deck outside. However, we preferred to sit inside. I loved the interiors and the quiet atmosphere there.
The lighting can be improved to enhance the beautiful interiors.

We ordered Harbara Kebab and Chicken Tikka for starters and Garlic Naan,Tandoori Roti and a portion of Chicken Tikka Masala for the main course.
The Chicken Tikka was delicious with tender chicken. Harabara Kebab was excellent. The breads were great. The Chicken Tikka masala was delightful and palatable.
The portions were decent sized, but the quantity of chutney served with the starters was less. The food arrived at a stipulated amount of time.

The service was good. I was pleased by the Manager who visited each and every table and ensured that the customers enjoyed their service and food.

Overall, a new addition to my favorites and will be back soon to try some new flavors.

Namak is your quintessential local - good, unpretentious food at a decent price and an easy to get to locale. Easy stop in mid week, or on the weekend. Service is good, and the food well balanced. Ivan, the owner / proprietor (seems to know what he is doing). I was here in February, just a few months after they'd opened.

It was raining and so I decided try Namak out and order a few takeaway items. Having lived in India for a month on holiday and eating really good food, I must say I was extremely impressed. Some of the best Indian I've ever had, it was truly delicious and the generous portion sizes the cherry on top!

I liked that we could sit outside (no smokers at the time thank goodness); and I loved the fact that it was open when every other restaurant in the area was closed. On arrival there were 3 other seated tables - bonus! The service was very good. A little subtle Indian music might be nice, but peace and quiet is better than bad music. Loved all the starters - portions are generous. Bhajis are particularly good. Curries are all tasty and fresh - did however pick up an unnecessary sweetness in the chicken madras and the butter naan. Delicious masala tea - would be even better if there was a non-sweetened version too. We WILL be back - really nice to have a decent Curry spot in the hood. Nice dry rose on offer too which is rare. And of course Cobra beer.

We ordered in via uber eats and we were blown away by the efficiency of the service. The food is highly commendable, my boyfriend and I are curry lovers and are both so impressed with the menu options from Namak. I am not a big fan of naan bread, as at most restaurants these tend to be quite oily but Namak's had me going for seconds. We had the crisp Chili garlic naan, lamb Dahl gosht and chicken and prawn curry. Both dishes were flavored to perfection. We look forward to visiting the restaurant and meeting the owners. Very few curry restaurants get this right. The only concern is that the prices reflected on zomato are not the same as those on uber eats. We look forward to trying more options on the menu, well done and keep it up!

We finally found an Indian restaurant in Johannesburg that makes Indian food as good as we experienced in India. With friendly staff, an excellent owner who takes pride in his restaurant and the cuisine to the most delicious flavoursome food. We rate this as the best restaurant for authentic Indian food 👌🏼

We went to Namak in Craighall Park for a birthday celebration and had a fantastic evening.

Our shared starters included Chicken Malai Tikha (deliciously creamy pieces of tandoor chicken), superb cheese & onion samosas, Pepper Ghobi (cauliflower crumbed in black pepper and celery and deep fried) and Hara Bhara Khebab (sinach, pea and potato fitters). All excellent.

Our main course curries included a Lamb Curry, Prawn Lasoonio, Fish Madras, Chicken Madras and Veg Kadhai – all outstanding – but the star of the night was undoubtedly the Chicken Hyderabadi, an amazingly creamy and fresh combination of mint, peanuts, coconut milk and other wonders. Truly exceptional.

Good service and value for money all in all.

Indian food makes me so happy. I drive past here everyday and today I couldn't help stopping by.
The price is a little more than at my usual Indian place but the portion definitely is generous. My Aloo Muttar Gobhi was pretty good, the flavour of the curry sauce was just lacking a little bit. The garlic Naan can also be a little thicker (this is cheaper than at other places though)
Usually I have to ask for hot when I want medium but at Namak you get what you ask for. I love that they highlight what is vegetarian AND vegan. Now you don't have to read through the ingredient of every dish outside the vegetarian section.
Good Indian food, it won't become my regular spot but I definitely will come back.

One of my favourite Indian restaurants. Would always recommend the chicken korma curry and butter chicken curry, with buttered naan. Easily can share a curry between two people too.

A great North Indian restaurant however the Victorian styled decor with a few Indian folk tale art pieces on the walls doesn't quite make the place truly authentic. This was quite a let down if you under the impression you were coming to an Indian dining outlet.

Nevertheless the food is absolutely delicious with a variety of the usual Indian curry dishes as well as Goan and Hyderabadi regional cuisines.
Went for the Lamb Badami which is lamb cooked in almond paste and spices, tempered with cumin seeds and garnished with a touch of fresh cream. This mouth watering dish is served with rice however a traditional freshly cooked Indian bread will make this experience even better. The sauce is hot with a nice infusion of spices and chopped almond which makes for a really enjoyable dish compared to a regular creamy korma curry.
Try the homemade mint and lemon juice which may seem simple but somehow they have managed to get the correct sweet and sour balance making for an awesome refresher before or after meal.
A nice new find which I will frequent to try more on the menu.o

If it look superb it normally is not, but this can't be said about Namak at Craighall, it is simply superb and delish and the place is spotless now help me walk home I'm stuffed

Just had our 5th meal from Namak and seems many of the teething issues that we first experienced are now, thankfully, a thing of the past. Excellent palak paneer, dhal thadka, rogan josh and butter chicken tonite ... All of them.

Well to describe about Namak in Craighall it's one of the most neat and tidy restaurant I had ever seen in Gauteng. Food was very appetising & awsome. Service was efficient , staffs are very friendly. Nan bread & chicken tikkaa masala delicious !! Kids too love this place. Will visit the restaurant more frequently . Thanks Caroline

This place is life saver. Cheap in price and value for money. Taste is average but when away from home and with less options, this is the most pocket friendly place in that area.

I am always up to try a new Indian restaurant and gave Namak a try. I ordered the Paneer Tikka masala which is normally a first choice at an Indian restaurant and a good way for me to gauge the food. I was not blown away as I found this dish to be very acidic and not as flavourful as I would have liked. I will have to try a few other dishes to see if I change my rating. Prices are also a lot more than other Indian restaurants in the area.
Tim Ross
Namak is a great place for some tasty curries. I have tried a number of dishes and haven't been disappointed with any of them. My favorite the lamb rogan josh. Their drink selection needs a bit of an update and service isn't amazing but the food makes up for it. I will definitely go back.

Once again, delicious. Deserves to be on everyone's local favorites list. I love the vegetarian options, the lamb gosht and a good old favorite chicken korma. Suggest the Paul Cluver Pinot Noir to complement your choice of meal. Perfect for a midweek takeaway or dinner.

My very first Butter Chicken and needless to say, it was a great experience.*hides* And yes, yes...I will admit that I have been missing out. ?? Yummy, juicy, spicy....I could taste the love that went into making this baby. Thank you Namak! #butterchicken #namak

I love it when a new restaurant pops up in my area, especially if it’s an Indian one! The menu is quite extensive, offering a wide variety of chicken, lamb, vegetarian and seafood curries, they also offer Indochinese food.

The service was outstanding, our waitress was friendly attentive and they are very well priced!!
The atmosphere is very laid back, the restaurant is huge and they have a beautiful outside deck.

Whenever I go to an Indian restaurant I like trying as many dishes as possible. We ordered the prawn masala, it was very tasty, the flavours were delicious, however it lacked a bit of salt. The Lamb Badami was delish, the almond paste really complimented the soft, rich lamb. The 2 chicken dishes we ordered were the Kadai and Butter chicken. I preferred the Kadai, the flavours were really delicate. The butter chicken lacked flavour. We also ordered butter and garlic naan- yum, yum, yum!

I will definitely be back. I'd suggest going to Giles for a drink and popping on over for some delicious curry.

This is by far our favourite Indian restaurant! Every time we've come, which may be turning into something of a habit, the service was friendly and quick and the food outstanding. The curries have a great depth of flavour and you never get the feeling that it is mass-produced using little pre-mixed bags of spices. There are subtle differences which speak of fresh, instinctive cooking. My personal favourite is the lamb palak gosht, but the butter chicken comes in a close second. The pricing is reasonable, all that is needed is some more foot traffic as the restaurant is still fairly new. Highly recommended!!

I always wanted to try Namak after hearing such great things about the Blairgowrie branch so was excited to see it pop up so near to us! We went for a quick dinner here on Thursday. The service was great, our waitress was so friendly and efficient. I enjoyed sitting outside on the deck. My boyfriend and I had chicken and lamb korma, which were both tasty and reasonably priced. Glad to have a good curry place in the neighbourhood! I'm sure we will frequent it often!
#ZomatoTopStar
