Gentleman’s Arthouse is an architectural marvel that has stood the test of time, and they’ve done a grand job of turning this old lavatory into a must-do dining experience. From the refurbished urinal seats to ceilings that haven’t been touched in 100 years, this authentic venue proved to be a fascinating find.
The waiters were knowledgeable and speedy, making sure the courses arrived on time and you knew what you were eating.
The starter course for me was quite average, needing a bit more oomph to show off some fancy ingredients. The dessert was quite a spectacle but became a bit too sickly sweet after a few bites. The main course, however, redeemed the entire meal. The fillet was cooked to perfection, and the pepper sauce was perfect. Definitely the highlight of the meal.
Overall it’s an experience you should definitely try, mainly for the quirky and historical ambience.

It only opens on Thursdays with a 4 week waiting period.

Absolutely great food and amazing dining experience. 1 down side to this place is it's location, situated in Newtown, a bit of a daunting drive through cbd at night if you are not used to it.

We had a really cool experience at Gentlemen's Arthouse. The restaurant & bar is set in a 100yr old lavatory. The staff was amazing, with friendly and efficient service. The food was delicious.
I can definitely recommend this as a cool venue for your next function / party.

Awesome amazing experience.Wish there was a longer cabaret show. The building is historic and jaar dropping in time and the menu memorable. The drinks are breathtaking, need a mixology show to appreciate the thought process. Would love to have my the chef!

This is a a great setting and experience for the inner foodie in you. The restaurant is within an old public toilet. Some of the seats are based in the refurbished urinals. The food is very interesting, not for the faint-hearted. There is a cabaret show during one of the courses as well. Decent cocktails. Pretty pricey and you'll need to book in advance

Very intriguing choice for a restaurant, but what a wonderful transformation.
We were welcomed with refreshing cocktails we haven't tried before in environment we haven't dined before either. And everything that followed was getting better and better.
Extremely well presented meals that were nothing short of delicious with one or another surprise.
The entertaining dance before the main course was a real delight too setting up the mood for the rest of the evening long after the dinner.
This is definitely one of Johannesburg's hidden treasures - literally. A proper directions will help any future guests as we needed a bit of luck to find the place.

Absolutely stunning venue. Located inside the old Johannesburg train station bathrooms this bar is truly a sight to behold. While sitting in chairs converted out of the old men’s urinals, you can enjoy the architecture and bare stone walls.
Great service with a smile with the manager being a stand up gentleman and most helpful.
There is unfortunately no WiFi here and signal can be difficult to get. The drinks and food is absolutely delectable. Well worth a visit if you are looking for something historical or just wanna have a drink while sitting in an ancient urinal!
