Review Back O' The Moon - Johannesburg

Beautiful Friday night at this restaurant. Good tasty food, but you must trust your pockets. Took a bit too long with the food though. Food was delicious except for dumpling. Dumpling was never my thing anyway. Desserts were also delicious, but small portions. The place is wheelchair friendly even inside. Clean restrooms, handbag hangers on the back side of the doors, soap and hand towels. I would come back to this restaurant any day. Great service and very friendly waitors n waitresses.

The reception was wonderful. We were greeted with great pleasure at the door and escorted to our seats where we didnt have to wait for a waiter to arrive. we had fun exploring the modern day menus before we received our drinks. The entertainment was very pleasant and we were pleased to have our special request noted. THE FOOD WAS BEYOND AMAZING. and the portion size is everything! well done and thank you for an amazing experience.

After their revamp last year it feels a lot more upmarket. Entertainment varies with performer, but its nice to have a singer whilst eating. Food was average.

Spent our 10 year anniversary at Back o The Moon. It was great. Food, service and entertainment was awesome. Planning to make it a regular thing for celebrations. A great night out

Serious top notch fine dining restaurant with a cigar lounge. The food is so delicious, just thinking about it makes the mouth water. The music was lovely too.

I love this place, its pretty amazing for intimate dinning and best for dinner cause It portrays that romatic feel instead of social. The food and service was beyond this world

Lovely service, the live band on that night was amazing. Great evening out with your partner or work after drinks. Love coming here after a hectic day at work!

Absolutely Poor service with shortage of glasses, plates and cutlery!! Never heard of this before at any restaurant!! We waited for 2.5 hours to get our starters!! A shadow of what it was a decade ago! <br/>Won’t visit in a hurry.

Went for dad's birthday last night. He loved the vibe food staff and the outing they even delivered some ice cream and choc sauce. It was great. Bit disappointed they didn't have snails that eve. And the lamb cutlets were delicious but had no Moroccan spice or thyme jus. Just a bbq sauce drizzled over. And the ostrich fillet was nice but strangely cut into rectangle pieces on plopped on top of some veg. Presentation a bit lacking. Perhaps some garnish or dried parsley.<br/><br/>We spent over a grand and the waitress still asked for her tip in cash which we didn't have so she made us pay it separately from the main bill???? I understand that waiters get money deducted from their tips and on any other day we could ve made a plan but on special occasions..... come on. It's not professional and we were there to enjoy ourselves not be guilted into issues with restaurant employees

We visited Back Of the Moon on Wednesday night. It was quiet busy for a week day. The staff were polite and welcoming. The food was delicious and arrived the table very quickly. It’s a little dark in there but the atmosphere and music in general was lovely.

The service is terrible everything right up to drinks takes two hours 😢. The food is was cold and disappointing. This was my first visit and I’m not impressed at all.

Hi, we had a meal at Back of the Moon at Gold Reef City this past Friday 27th April. The vibe and live band was great, however the length of time it took for our food to arrive was not acceptable. We booked a table for 7 people, and ordered our mains by 8:30pm. Everyone’s main courses arrived at 10pm and shortly thereafter. It took more than 1.5 hours for the food to arrive! When we asked our waiter what the problem was, only then did he apologise and mentioned that they have 2 large birthdays on the same evening. The restaurant staff should’ve apologised for the delay without us having to question what was wrong, or at least warn us that the food was going to take longer to prepare than normal when we ordered.<br/> <br/>When the food did eventually arrive, it was mediocre. Some people at our table enjoyed their meals, but some meals were just not up to standard. The steak ordered was meant to be medium rare – however the one side was more medium/well than rare. Two people ordered one of the ‘Back of the Moon’s Signature Dishes’ – the lamb cutlets – according to the description on the menu it was meant to be served with mint, minted mash and thyme jus (see attached picture of the menu item).<br/> <br/>When our lamb cutlets arrived, it was tasty, but was most definitely not at all what was described on the menu. It was served with mash, but definitely not minted mash, there was no fresh mint as described, and definitely no thyme jus, just more of a barbeque sauce coated over the lamb. We don’t really understand how it’s possible to get what is meant to be a ‘signature dish’ so wrong.<br/> <br/>After being mostly disappointed by the mains, one person at our table decided to try the dessert and ordered the ‘pistachio and ginger ice cream’ – meant to be one scoop of each, to which the waiter replied ‘we only have vanilla’<br/> <br/>As the menus are all electronic (on tablets), I would think they are easy enough to update. If the lamb dishes are never served with mint or thyme, rather change the menu so people don’t have expectations that are never met. If the restaurant does not have certain flavours of ice cream, rather just update the menu with at least ‘ask the waiter for flavours available’<br/> <br/>This restaurant has a good vibe, and waiter was friendly and made an effort to make up for the delay, but the food very disappointing.

This restaurant is situated inside the Gold Reef Casino complex. Ample safe parking and easy to find. The restaurant name originates from an upmarket jazz club which existed during the apartheid era, where many of the great SA artists performed daily - the likes of Miriam Makeba began their careers at the original Back of the Moon in Sophiatown. <br/><br/>We visited as a large group of 40 for dinner. Keeping in mind the restaurant was full and we were a large group , service was excellent. All our starters , mains and deserts were served timeously. We ordered off a set menu and everything on this menu was delicious. For starters a yummy Greek salad, which itself was huge and bread and dips were served . Mocktails were not on the menu but they were really accommodating and made a Virgin Pina Colada for me , which tasted as good as it looked. I ordered the mushroom ravioli, it was a generous portion & served with sufficient sauce with great balance of spices. <br/>Others at the table enjoyed the prawns main. <br/>Desert was decadent chocolate brownie fondant , and a delicious cheesecake as well. All the dishes served were beautifully plated, of the highest standard and freshly prepared. <br/>Atmosphere is great, wonderful vibe as there was live entertainment and a dance floor. <br/><br/>Great food , great entertainment, great service, all in all a fantastic night out !

Went here last night for a year end function. The setup and the way they accommodated us was amazing. The staff were friendly, fast and competent. We had a set menu and had to order both mains and dessert at the same time. I had Norwegian Salmon - which was amazing. And my partner had a T-bone - which melted in your mouth. The music playing in the background and later the band singing gave this place a 5 for vibe. People dancing and enjoying the evening. Will be going back for sure.

First time we went, we were very impressed with the restaurant, food and service.<br/>The second and third time we went back we were a bit disappointed with the food,<br/>Got some live music that's nice also

We used to come here in the 90"s when Felicia owned the restaurant and it was a sought after venue with exceptional service where you had to dress up and book otherwise you would be turned away. <br/><br/>You would leave disappointed and immediately book the next day and wait in anticipation for when the time came for your visit and heaven help you if you didn't dress up.<br/><br/>Now it is just an average restaurant where the personal touch probably left the country with Felicia, what a shame <br/><br/>We lived for the food and entertainment
Devin Sage
So perhaps not the best food in the world but a fun vibe and I would say it's definitely better for drinks with friends rather then a great dinner. <br/>I had the Calamari with lentils, this wasn't the best combination, it didn't have any texture to it and the lentils had no seasoning, Calamari was chewy. The Panna Cotta was pretty bad, it was more like firm jelly with a thick rubbery layer over the top.

Back O' The Moon (owned by Tsogo Sun) is a quirky and beautifully decorated little restaurant tucked away in Gold Reef City and I was MOST impressed to come across it recently by accident. <br/><br/>The original Back o' the Moon I hear was a famous shebeen in the historic Sophiatown of the 50's most notably frequented by Miriam Makeba in the late 50’s stage play, in which she sang the song Back o’ the Moon. This take on its jazzy sister I can imagine is quite a bit more upmarket than its namesake. Think jazz lounge, cognac and cigar bar.. <br/><br/>The menu offering: Think confit of duck, crocodile carpaccio, lobster bisque (a favorite), sole roulade, month aged steaks and everything in-between! <br/>On this first visit, I only had time for a quick drink, but I shall definitely return to do it some justice (now that I know it exists)! <br/>Watch this space for what looks like is going to be a wonderful meal..<br/><br/>UPDATE SUNDAY 2 JULY: I made the trek to Back O' The Moon to finally sample the food that is so beautifully packaged and presented on their menu. <br/><br/>What a shocking, shocking meal.<br/><br/>The food (I can only let the photos of this food speak for themselves): <br/>Lobster soup - arrived looking very pathetic and was actually cold. <br/>By the time I got to my prawn cocktail (which is so beautifully illustrated in the menu that I could not resist it) I could not believe my taste buds or eyes. The cup was filled with brown grated lettuce, chewy prawns that I could hardly get through and then SMOTHERED in a sickening amount of pink sauce. <br/>After one mouthful, I called the waiter, sent it back telling him that the lettuce is completely brown and prawns almost inedible. I will let the photos speak for themselves. <br/><br/> They then had the audacity to still charge me for the prawn cocktail that I sent back to the kitchens with a complaint. <br/><br/>We got our bill, paid and left. <br/><br/>For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

The service was slow. We ordered simple drinks(water and a coke) with our food order and it only came through after starters.<br/>I had the prawn cocktail/avo ritz that was served in a completely ridiculous margarita glass which was impractical to eat out of. The dish was completely unbalanced. The prawns had no flavour and the dished was over served with Mayo and had an overly sweet sauce. My boyfriend had the phyllo parcel which was very small for the price but flavorsome nonetheless. His main was average but he said the peri peri chicken was a good portioned and flavored well. My main, the sole, was truly the winner. Cooked to perfection and favorited beautifully, it was utterly mouthwatering. For dessert we both had the Malvasia pudding which was dry and at the base so hard. It actually seemed quite stale. The atmosphere was cheerful and love music is a good touch

I last went to Back O'The Moon many moons (haha) ago when I was still a teen. The food was so good that on our trip there last night I was looking forward to the delicious prawn curry I'd had- the one with the litchis in it (an exotic and delicious taste sensation). But oh, how the mighty have fallen... bog standard, if not below standard, food- We ordered the prawn curry they had on the menu (not the same as the one I'd had previously based on the description and subsequent taste), lamb curry, chicken kebab and calamari. Nothing amazing. Ventured cautiously on to dessert; the best- sounding of which were sold out. All awful. The worst "ice cream" duo I've ever had in my life; the pistachio and ginger scoops tasted like water. The pecan tart was okay but the ice cream it came with also tasted really weird. Overall the food was not a strong point. Highlights of this place are the live entertainment and the decor. Overall a real disappointment.

Pleasantly surprised by the spot. The complimentary bread isn't the best but the main dishes we had were really amazing. I opted for the peri peri chicken with a side of mash- actually finished all my food for the first time in a while, we were rushing off to a comedy show after so I didn't get to try their desserts -which looked divine. The service here was exceptional. Great ambience.

Host was friendly, deco so so, waitor seemed like he was doing us a favor serving us, food nothong to brag about my friend had a prawn curry had 4 tiny prawns my oxtail tasted burnent, waitor seemed desperate for tip than providing a service while paying he demanded cash for tip said can't use card machine I gave him cash not even a thank you or a good bye.... Very disappointed

Went for a work lunch today. Restaurant was quiet. Everybody enjoyed their meals thoroughly and so did I. We had the prawn curry, lamb shank, duck, chicken and steak. Lovely presentation of food and table settings. The only thing I disliked was the fact that the waiter kept on forgetting my drink order.

The music is what drew me inside. They had an amazing band playing. We only decided to have coffee and dessert. The staff were extremely friendly. We ordered two servings of the cream cheese cheesecake with berries. While really tasty, the serving size was disappointing for the price paid. It was more like a mini cheesecake. All in all, I will definitely visit this establishment again...But I'll have dessert elsewhere🙈
Leola
Great food, great service...but in a fine dining establishment I don't expect to scream at my dinner guests because the music is so loud. Put a downer on the whole evening...a big pity because would have been perfect!

I had a pleasant experience at this Restaurant. Great ambience, good food and excellent service. The only thing I could find fault in is their prices.

We ate here on the evening of 25 June 2016.  Dirty glasses, cold dry food - wasn't very good value for money. We were promised a voucher by the then manager Albert - never received a response.  Phone the restaurant now and no one is able to assist.  I will never eat here again nor will I recommend it.  Nicoll - Mafikeng

Never ever considered eating here, but went through for a friend's birthday.<br/><br/>Ordered the 450g prime rib steak, which only came with chips as a side. I could see that my steak was the worst cut of the table, it was thin, very sinewy, and over cooked. It also took over 2 hours for the table to get our orders.<br/><br/>Even though we were a very large table, it was not nearly worth the amount I paid<br/><br/>I'm rating it 3.5 because everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the dessert platters. I'm probably the minority of people with a bad experience.

This will be the second time I've eaten here and of both times I did enjoy the food. Please know that both of these times were complementary (both drinks and food ) due to Gold Reef City's rewards plans. The first time we ever went, the setting was fabulous, it was for a dinner service and there was live entertainment. The food was absolutely fantastic, the restaurant wasn't busy and I had no complaints.<br/><br/> Today when I wound up there again, my expectations were high but I was let down. The food wasn't that great, my starter and main were fantastic (the chicken was perfectly tender and yummy!) But my dessert of a Malva pudding was no Malva pudding whatsoever and it was burned at the bottom. My brother had the roast beef main and the beef was extremely tough. Also the food was really mass produced and we were seated at a table with complete strangers like sardines! - thank goodness south African people are friendly enough to converse and not make things awkward!<br/><br/>As for our waiters... excellent service on the first night and this morning! Especially considering he was waiting like 10 tables of 8 people each! The service is quite great.<br/><br/>I think this place is quite excellent, although the first time was more fantastic than the second experience I believe that they weren't too bad on the second time and I'll definitely give them another try!

A wonderful restaurant with a wonderful vibe. A bit overpriced, but then again you get what you pay for. Definitely worth another visit. The food was divine.

Food is amazing. Back o the moon provided a memorable 3 course dinner date for my parents and I. The lamb shank, the fillet all cooked to perfection whilst being surrinated to live music playing some of my dad's golden oldies.

@Back O' The Moon always has the best atmosphere with relaxed music, good food (Grilled Calamari with potatoe fries) and glass of white wine.

Divine dinner dance venue and there aren't a lot of those around, the setting is gorgeous and takes you back to the good 'ol days. Chef Prenolan has a varied menu and the atmosphere is great

Fine dining at its best. Been here with a large group. Courteous waiters catered for special requests. Very expensive though! Once in a while worth it for the experience. Menu could be expanded though.

This place just oozes class..the decor, bar, seating arrangement and general staff attire are all befitting. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable. The meal selection is good with the execution thereof being great. Taste and plating presentation exceeded all expectations. The ostrich fillet in this instance was probably the best I've ever had. I will definitely be back here the next time I stop over in Gold Reef. Special Thanks must also go out to these guys for making my girlfriend's birthday special...and scoring me some brownie points 😉

Pleasant evening spoiled by a bad caipirinha cocktail, sent it back and i paid for it. Management couldnt carless after complaining,i got told its there spin on the drink.
Annagret Booyse
Very, very good. Not only were we treated as royalty, but the food was tasteful and presented beautifully. As I believe to score restaurants on their food and service this is the reason that this restaurant has such a good score. One thing that did bother was that we were charged R48 for water. It is almost cheaper to drink wine.

I came here a while back with my mother and sister. Upon arriving we were warmly greeted. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. <br/><br/>The floor manager even took me around the restaurant to show me the exclusive drinks and cigars and as far to teach me which wines go with which foods. <br/><br/>The food was exquisite! Freshly made and unbelievably delicious. Since then I've returned numerous times. <br/><br/>Perfect place to go with your aid significant other. Whilst you're enjoying your meal you can enjoy the music of the in-house live band.

Their steak is in my top 10. Tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. The service is one of my hobby horses when it come to fine dining and these guys know how. All the waiters are ready to serve without being helicopters (hover, hover). The live Jazz band sets the stage (literally)<br/>For a special night out, to feel like royalty, try this fine establishment.
Luthando Kekana
Loved the experience at this baby. It's a perfect date night set up. The decor, food and service are on point. Love the live performances aswell. would love to visit again. However it's difficult to get to see the live performances if you are on wheelchair as the stage is downstairs.... :-(. Would have given this baby a 5🌠

Great entertainment, great service, great food we had such a good time. The decor is beautiful. Couldnt be more pleased. 11/10 scored. Would come back anytime.

The service is impeccable and the food is great. I had a 3 course meal. Presentation is amazing and the wine was ok. For starters I had the Norwegian Smoked Salmon, main course: grilled Line Fish and for Dessert Black Cherry Jubilee. FANTASTIC!
Denzil Naggan
Great food , had the Lobster Thermidor for Main and Pecan nut Tart for desert, the Service and the Live entertainment is was awesome!
Bobby Bhugwandin
Celebrated my wife's 40th birthday at the restaurant, staff was very helpful with organizing and putting together a great menu- grilled sole and duck was delicious, good attention from the waiters. Only critique would be the high cost wines and champagnes
Usha

My boyfriend and I went on Tuesday to celebrate our anniversary. It was a really nice experience and the vibe was nice. The staff were friendly. However the food was nothing special for the price. It looked good but didnt live up to its apearance. Once off and would not go back

The Back of the Moon is the place to go if you want a quality experience at very reasonable prices. I started with a shrimp cocktail and usually expect starters of this sort to be fairly minimalistic in terms of quantity at a venue with this atmosphere. While waiting I was presented with a warm dinner roll with an assortment of butters and condiments, this was rapidly followed by a side chicken mini kebab with cheese and when the starter arrived it was huge, so much so that I pondered whether I could eat this and a main in a single sitting. The shrimp cocktail was infused with chili and was tasty and fresh with succulent firmness in each bite. <br/><br/>My main was an aged rump with a peri peri sauce, medium rare. This was a little tougher than I would have liked but it was perfectly medium rare so I may have to attribute this more to the bluntness of the steak knife as opposed to the cut n cook. <br/><br/>As a plus and unique to this critique is that usually when I dine solo on a business trip such as this I'm in and out in quick succession. This is the first occasion where I've felt like I I wanted to savor the moment, relax and enjoy my evening meal. <br/><br/>The background live jazz/blues entertainment wrapped the meal off perfectly. So, scores out of 5 as follows:<br/><br/>Atmosphere: 4<br/>Food: 3.5<br/>Staff attentiveness: 4<br/>Service efficiency: 4.5

I visited the restaurant yesterday 16-12-14 for the first time after the renovations, a total disaster! when we arrived we were seated and waited 10min to get further attention and a waiters attention- when we placed our order it took an unbelievable 1hr 30minutes to get our dinner after complaining and it was not complete. we ordered T-Bone steak with chips the steak had no flavour at all the chips were dry and cold we asked for some kind of sauce to add flavour and the manager rushed over gravy and the rest of our order we ordered. <br/><br/>I really missed the old Back of the Moon at that moment the perfect menu and service, I did not understand what has happened! they need to step it up along with the chefs.

We ate here before a show but were late due to the incredible traffic on the M1 south. We ended up having to shovel our food in our faces. <br/><br/>I had the chops, I think they were good? <br/><br/>But we kept looking and talking about the ribs that were arriving at all the tables around us. We are busy planning our return to smash ribs by the bucket load. Watch this space!

This place - is wow! If you in the area, or not it would seem that it's a celebration dinner spot! The service is superb, and delightful! The waiter's recommendations are excellent... I found myseld falling in love with items I would generally have never ordered such as a mouth watering corn soup, and a ginger ice cream! it was worth it... And the important part is it was delicious!!!! '

I hosted a 30th birthday party at Back o' the Moon on the 05 October 2013. Never have I received such outstanding and heartfelt service from a restaurant before, from the telephonic booking to the moment we left there were smiles and absolutely warm attitudes from all the staff members and the musicians. A fine, beautiful and graceful lady by the name of Prudence made sure my every request was attended to without any hesitation, she is definitately the best restaurant host I have ever met and really is an asset to this restaurant. <br/><br/>The live music at the restaurant was amazing and my 25 guests really enjoyed it, the musicians made the Birthday boy feel really special with announcements and calling him to the stage. They really kept the guests alive by requesting them to the dance floor from time to time. Which resulted in all 25 guests only leaving the restaurant after 12:30 am.<br/><br/>All 25 guests had the pleasure of ordering from the normal restaurant menus and the food was brought out promptly, thanks to the hard working kitchen staff. The waiters were there at every moment to take extra drink orders and no one waited for service which was brilliant! <br/><br/>The cherry on the top was the ability for me to bring a big cake that was made to the restaurant, there was no questions of surcharges etc, which I found most restaurants in Johannesburg speak about when they hear you bringing something along.<br/><br/>Thank you Prudence and the staff at Back o' the Moon Gold Reef City for your help in setting-up the tables with my decor and for your impecable service. <br/><br/>Take care<br/><br/>Regards<br/>Neil Moodley

Rich, decadent food against a backdrop of decor that is Sophiatown-meets-Liberace, Back o' the Moon offers an overpriced evening of opulent wining and dining. Every item on the menu is served with pomp and ceremony, drenched with butter and garnished to the max. Even so, the food is delicious and the portions large. A good place for a first date if you're partner is into all that is flashy and coated in gold. Live singers perform on some evenings, their average voices belting out numerous cover songs... and with an adjoining dance-floor, it is possible to work off the calories you would've gained from your meal.

Back o' the moon is a really great venue for young and old... i decided to write a review not only because of the food but my whole first experience at this fantastic place<br/><br/> twas a beautiful mothers day in 2012, now i must say i DO NOT enjoy family lunches solely because i have a really weird family, my mom could burst out into song at any moment and my aunt could burst into tears, my sister might burst into dance and i might just BURST!<br/><br/>In any case, we arrived at the place and i made a request that they seat us at separate tables, my request was obviously a little unreasonable due to the amount of bookings, however we did get a really awesome seat right in front of the stage, ... we ordered a platter as starters and i must say everything i tried was really fresh and tasty... It was at this time a smooth band started playing and that really just set the vibe, <br/><br/>Back o'the moon is a really stylish venue so its only right they should have live entertainment and believe me it really is a great addition to an already great dining experience.<br/><br/>anyway for main course i decided to have a blue cheese steak, now at this point my mom was singing my sister was dancing with some other dudes mother, and my uncle had just had his 9th beer, it was right then that a really friendly waitress place a hot steak, cooked to perfection in front of me, the aroma coming off that place was truly mind-blowing (SIDE NOTE - i'm a cheese lover, AND THIS IS DEFINITELY FOR CHEESE LOVERS) i cut a juicy slab off and my plate exploded with cheese, i was even surprised at the amount of cheese they had fitted in this steak.... the fist bite was the deepest, it felt as if my world had stopped, and all that was there was me and this steak... it was truly one of THEE best steaks i have ever had.<br/><br/>In conclusion and in the words of ARNOLD " I'll BE BACK " i really enjoyed myself and so did my taste buds...

This is definitely the place to go if you are looking to take the youngsters and oldies. We celebrated my Aunts 40th here and we all had such a good time. The live band is phenomenal and know exactly how to draw the crowd to the dance floor. The food is great, I love the grilled Calamari. If only they didn't close so early!!
Larissa
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the food here on a Friday night. We purchased a casino special that included dinner for two with a set menu option. I liked that the set menu had variety. The springbok carpaccio and calamari starter was very yummy. For mains cappuccino prawns was interesting but I prefer the salty option. The vegetarian option was also really good and I loved the mushrooms. We were stuffed by dessert. The creme brûlée was ok. The service was very good. Drinks are expensive.
Sam
Great ambience for dinners but not so for lunch. The food is good but on the pricey side. Expect to pay above average prices for drinks. The ambience at Sunday lunch is dead and disappointing. This is often a chosen venue for birthday parties. A private dining room is also available. Our starters and mains were delicious. The dessert menu needs a revamp.

This is an excellent establishment. We celebrated my Dads 50th birthday at Back O' The Moon and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the music was perfect for the "oldies" as well as us "youngsters". A great place to dine both day and night and a wonderful place to go to if you are celebrating a special occasion. The food is delicious and there is excellent live music.
