Review Hokkaido - Johannesburg

Ryan Koh
My wife and I were really surprised by this place. Being one of the few Asian restaurants in Johannesburg, this restaurant has exceeded expectations, even better than restaurants you will find in Asian countries. We had the tempura, miso soup, udon, hand wraps and sushi rolls. It was really fantastic and priced very reasonably too!
Natalija Cameron
Great selection of sushi on the menu! Lots of variety! Prices are affordable! Miso soup was delicious and so was the Ka Kiage Tempura. Will be back again soon!
Dominic Ribeiro
We booked in advance for the tepanyaki grill, but nobody told us it would be off due to loadshedding, so it was a bit of a disappointment. The food is quite good but takes forever to come to the table. The restaurant was quiet. Otherwise, I'd be more understanding. Service is mediocre. The waitress heard it was a birthday, so they brought us an ice cream with a sparkler, which was a nice thought.

Their sushi is one of best, we order one veg platter. I enjoy it. Must try the fried roll and custard bao. The price is very reasonable.

One of my favorite sushi places! Always fresh, consistent and well priced. You won't find the ultra modern sushi here but what you do get is traditional sushi done right. Suggestions to try are the Salmon or prawn hand rolls. A wide range of other Chinese and Japanese style dishes too. The chicken Tepenyaki is an easy winner. They also have a cooking stove in the dining room so you can watch your food being cooked in front of your eyes. Not much ambiance but easily a go-to restaurant for sit down on take away.

My favourite sushi place in Jozi. Incredible sushi partnered with incredible prices! The owners (mama & papa shop) are the friendliest couple you will meet, when you are a loyal customer they greet you by name & have great convo. I like the SO4 platter which includes Sashimi, Nigiri, California Rolls & Maki - you can choose an option of a variety of salmon & tuna. Their drinks are very cheap. I would not have your belongings on the table if you sit outside however inside is great. Can get very busy specially on the weekends so order in advance. Yes they do all-you-can-eat too!
Kevin Grinker
Truly fantastic Japanese cuisine and very affordable. One of the few Japanese places to serve fried chicken sushi which is beyond incredible! Highly recommendable to all ! Chicken sweetcorn soup is amazing. Certain dishes are made on a wok live in front of the restaurant which is a very nice touch. 10/10

One of the best sushi restaurants in Johannesburg, I ordered on Uber eats and their sushi was fresh, well prepared and absolutely delicious 😋 👌

Had a great variety of sushi, 🍣 and nice thick cuts of sashimi at a good price definitely worthwhile.

Hokkaido is an all-time favourite restaurant of ours. We have been going there for at least 7 years and they always have the freshest sushi. Their deep-fried ice cream is also excellent, and their chow mein is divine.
Paballo Phoba
I am crazy full! Such a great place to have 'all you can eat sushi'. Extremely inexpensive. However, orders did take long.
JC Mellet
Always delicious, fresh food and incredible service. A small piece of Japan in Jozi!
Anish Abraham
Good food, wide variety and excellent value! Unbeatable for sashimi!

Visited Hokkaido Japanese restaurant just before closing time, so almost no people but is was extremely busy earlier when we drove past. The decor and atmosphere were a little bit outdated but the service and especially the food was outstanding. This is not a book to be judged by its cover or even location. Really good Sushi!.

Sushi was delish and beer is very well priced!

We were so amped about being able to order sushi following the lockdown. So, the disappointment of this dish was that much greater. We ordered the 3 sushi rolls: prawn tempura, teriyaki vegetable, and spicy mayo salmon. We also had the prawn chow mein. While the food arrived pretty quickly (within 30 min) and it was decently presented, the sushi lacked flavour entirely. It was really bland and dry (despite the addition of the mayo!). The chow mein was decent but the shrimp were so tiny! Overall, I don't think I would go back to Hokkaido considering the variety of other great sushi restaurants!
David Kopping
I've ordered from here before, but this menu is very outdated!
Sarah Krawitz
This is by far the best priced and most delicious sushi in Joburg. I don’t love sitting here as it’s not the greatest setting but for takeaways it’s fantastic, fast and tasty!
Nabila Hendricks
The sushi is amazing! The staff are great! The prices are unbeatable!

Honestly LOVE going here! It’s become sort of a weekly ritual to call in & grab sushi here - they’re also so quick and we always receive great service!
Rashalia Pather
I visit this place regularly and I love it. The menu is huge and can be a bit intimidating at first, but everything on it is good. The sushi is really well priced and good value for money, and the custard bao and crispy duck dishes are definitely worth a try.

The staff are friendly and service is quick. Parking is on the road and a bit limited, but there is a parking lot across the street that you can use.

It seems to me that the take away food is not as great as the sit-in food. The sushi combo was very average at best. The prawn sushi was falling apart and the combination was underwhelming. As for the chicken teppanyaki rice, the rice was either bland or too sweet, the chicken was overcooked and could have done with a bit vegetable on the side. Based on the quality, I really wouldn't be eager to be back too soon.
Zain And Faye
The food is great and very-well priced!

The décor looks average and the seating arrangement is a bit clustered but gives off a "homely" vibe.
Emmanuel Matsi
Had the all you can eat at R179. Sushi was nice with perfectly cooked rice and chunky of salmon and tuna. Atmosphere wasn’t so vibey but it’s Monday.
Mcwm14
Great sushi at an affordable price, fantastic beverages from the Far East and great sweet and sour pork. Not to mention the friendly staff and owners
Lizelle Brink
Hokkaido is my favourite sushi spot. Their sushi is consistently great and it’s really good value for money. I love their Salmon Hand Rolls with cucumber instead of the seaweed.

1* just because you can't give a negative review.

We ordered from the take away menu if that makes any difference. I have never in my life been this disgusted!

We ordered beef sui mai and tempura prawn sushi. First of all as you can see from the pictures that brown stuff wrapped in barely visible pastry and a carrot stuck to it was supposed to be sui mai and the sad looking deep fried prawn wrapped in rice and seaweed is supposed to be the sushi.

This place has such great reviews so I'm not sure if we got that one bad plate but it wasn't even edible!

The Sui Mai had a fowl smell, that stuff was definitely not beef. It smelled like a rotting animal rolled in car clutch, I actually cannot shake the horrific smell 😷🤢🤢🤢🤢

The sushi was below average, I often have tempura prawn sushi it it definitely is not what we got given last night.

Overall I won't be going anywhere near this place anytime soon. So so so disappointed.
Excellent sushi and service. Best Sushi we had in a very very long time. Will definitely go there again. Will take our kids there one night.

I had a lovely lunch from this place today. It's down the road from my office, but I'd never been before. Let me just say I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I got a salmon lunchbox for R75. Real good value for money! The fish was really fresh and good sized portions also. This was a takeaway order so I can't comment on service. The owner was really friendly when I went to collect. The ambience was not so great, but that's very typical of Chinese restaurants in my opinion, I prefer takeaways. This will be my new sushi spot whenever I need a fix!
Leanne
We got takeaways from Hokkaido. The Sushi was very reasonably priced for the size and quality of the sushi. Generous portions of fish in each roll . Good prices , good sushi 👍🏽
Bianca Daniels
Always go there with the family for many years, started on the smaller things like the lunchbox and slowly got to being able to handle the eat as much as you can buffet. Took my boyfriend there as a first time sushi eater and it was amazing. Staff could be friendly but other than that this place is a gem.
Eli Seidle
We ordered a sushi platter, S09 to be specific. It took quite a long time for the sushi to arrive and there weren't too many people in the resteraunt to begin with. Service was slow and not great. Certain waitresses are rude.
Grant & Sam
The bad service started with walking in and asking the hostess for a table, and she just nodded towards the restaurant area. The waitress was absent for most of the time, and even when flagged down took a while before deigning to stop by.
Onto the food. It was not good. Tried some sushi, none of which bear repeating - the seafood was of decent quality, but the rice and the rolling of the sushi were not good. The tempura was more batter than filling.
Would not return.
The Restaurant Phantom
Hokkaido is one of those interesting places which doesn't look like much and is surprising on many levels.

After grabbing some takeaway sushi a few times we decided to go and try some sit down.

We started with some sweet corn and hot and sour soup, accompanied by some mixed prawn and chicken dumplings served in beautiful Asian soup bowls with matching ladels and proper steaming woven baskets.

For mains we had the Fillet Steak Teppanyaki - made in the dining room on a proper sizzling griddle with masterful skills - and a simple but delicious chicken chow mein in a humongous portion.

The sushi is also super fresh and the spicy mayo salmon maki is excellent.

Overall this place has excellent value for money and appearances can be deceiving.

Have been back on several occasions and will continue to support this hidden gem.
Justine Taitz
In my opinion this is the best sushi in Norwood. The owners are really nice and are always happy. The restaurant itself needs a make over and a good scrub.
Carlo Roberto Gomes
As a vegetarian, best veg sushi ever tasted. This rating is purely based on the food and nothing else. Couldn't care less for "ambience". Service is friendly, what else do you need?
Johan Paul Haupt
Yes, there are many similar joints on the strip but this one is the best by far. The Sushi is extremely fresh and they make the best salmon roses in Joburg.
Elize Cloete
The decor and layout is a bit odd but the service is great and they make the best sushi in Norwood
We love the salmon lunch box

The sweet and sour beef is also a winner
Tasmika Amin
My go to for quick take away sushi and Chinese.

The restaurant itself looks a bit confused decor wise..and old plastic flowers are my pet peeve..but take away wise this place is great.

The sushi is fresh, well prepared and super affordable. And the chicken fried rice, though a bit sparse on the chicken front, is addictive.
Tam Loves Food
This place has really odd decor and it's strange that there are two distinct looking restaurants in one, but the sushi here is the best combination of well priced and delicious! I will return again and again.

I went out to Hokkaido for dinner last night. I have quite mixed opinions -some things were great, and others were not so great.
The service here is pretty shoddy. The waitresses are not very friendly or attentive; we often had to search for our waitress when we needed something. The restaurant itself looks a little rundown and dated.
Ordered the spinach and cream cheese Gao as I had heard it was good - it was okay. I didn't not enjoy it, but certainly not something I would order again.
My boyfriend and I each chose one of their flavoured Aloe drinks; I had the mango and he had the pineapple. Both were great. They have little pieces of aloe in it -so if you do not like textures in your drink, probably not for you.
For mains I got the crispy beef and my boyfriend got the cashew nut chicken. The Crispy beef was the highlight of the meal for me -its sauce was sweet, but spicy; perfectly balanced. Would definitely recommend this and order it again myself. I tasted the cashew chicken and found the sauce to be a bit heavy on the soy , but my boyfriend enjoyed the dish.
For dessert he got the deep friend bananas and I got the deep friend ice-cream. We also got a bowtie because he had never tried one before. The winner of dessert was the fried banana. The deep fried ice-cream was quite a let down. Its breading was way too thick, and while it looked impressive, it was not great to eat. Much prefer Thava's deep fried ice-cream that uses Phyllo pastry and is lighter as a result. The bowtie was also disappointing.

This review only revolves around sushi as that's all I've ever ordered at Hokkaido. In fact, it's all I've ever ordered for the last 6 years as a returning customer. The sushi has maintained its fresh, simple and delicious quality over the years. It's a great spot for a hungry student with a tight budget. The balance of rice to fish is spot on and as is the price-to-portion ratio.

Do yourself a favour and try the salmon roses, it's my favourite sushi but I can't seem to afford it anywhere else but at Hokkaido which makes equally as good if not better roses than any of the top sushi restaurants who will charge you an exorbitant price for two meager pieces. The edamame beans are great too.

Yes, the decor is outdated and Orient-kitsch and the waiters seem somewhat distracted and tired, but the owners are kind and professional, the fish is always fresh, and my wallet and belly will have me coming back for an excessive amount of sushi consumption until the place shuts down.
The SA Food Guru
This Chinese and Japanese restaurant is situated on Norwood's popular Grant avenue. The decor is rather in need of a facelift, and the place does seem a bit dirty inside.

The menu is enormous (as often found in Chinese places) - everything from sushi and chowmein to teriyaki and teppanyaki.

We had some vegetable tempura, which was pretty tasty and very crisp. Served with two different flavoured sauces.

Also tried the chicken glass noodle salad - nice enough and a good portion size.

For mains we had the chicken and also the fillet teppanyaki. This seems to be a speciality of theirs as the dining space is dominated by a large open cooking station where you can watch the chef prepare your meal.

The service was alright, not amazing. I'd return, only for the food, but not the ambience.
I went along with friends who went for the all you can eat special. They were content with the quality and price. The service however, was non-existent. Our waitress ignored us, rolled her eyes when we ordered more and she would forget to place the order for a bunch of dishes. I would definitely not be happy to go back.
FoodloverJHB
This restaurant has really amazing sushi at amazingly affordable prices. The salmon is extremely fresh.

We had dim sum for starters and shared several salmon dishes and it was divine. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for affordable sushi in Johannesburg.

It is a typical Chinese restaurant, but they offer Japanese dishes too. Don't expect too much decor wise, however their service was great and friendly.

They have quite a selection of wines at great prices.
Esther Shaidi
Second Friday lunch in a row that we are in the mood for sushi. Not particularly something to write home about but it did satisfy the craving. We ordered to collect and received prompt service.

The salmon didn't taste too great which made the overall meal a not so great experience.
Octavia Venables
This place is our families go to sushi restaurant in my area. The sushi is really good here. The dim sum spinach is awesome whether you go for all you can eat or select dishes they are tasty. The decor isn't amazing but the dishes are something to look forward too. Spring rolls are crispy and salmon special is worth it for the price and the portion. Ask for extra mayo to give the salmon rose effect. Chicken chowmeins flavors and portion very decent chicken well cooked. We do weekly takeaways from this place without breaking the bank when fulfilling Sushi cravings .

Hokkaido has been our go to sushi restaurant for years. Their salmon has always been the freshest and tastiest, and their all-you-can-eat was well worth the money. I haven't been there in about a year and a half and unfortunately I was sadly disappointed when I visited there the other day.

The all-you-can-eat has understandably increased in price to R160, but the overall quality has gone down quite a bit. The rice and seaweed in the fashion sandwiches and handrolls were a bit stale. The rice was hard and the seaweed chewy. The tuna didn't seem too fresh, and the miso soup was way too salty. Don't bother ordering the seaweed soup, which was literally dried seaweed sheets boiled in some water. It was bland and inedible.

The actual restaurant seems to have gotten a lot dingier as well... The place just didn't seem very clean, and we even had to ask for new cutlery as the ones we had were dirty. The waitress also payed very little attention to us as she was mostly on the phone or chatting to the other waitress, and we had to wave her down to get her to serve us each time.

Despite the bad experience, the salmon was still fresh and delicious, and just melted in your mouth. The salmon sashimi was the highlight of the meal and the portions were large. They also have delicious authentic Japanese dishes which I tried long ago, so I do have reasons to come back. It's just a pity the owners seem to have stopped caring as this restaurant has such a lot of potential.

I went with a group for dinner last night. Sushi is nice. Not amazing. But what ruined the meal was the completely pathetic unfriendly service we had. The waitress was so full of attitude she acted like she was doing us a Favour. I even saw her roll her eyes when we asked for the bill. Not once did she smile or say thank u for the tip she really didn't deserve.

Basically good sushi no frills fresh and cheap. Very good ! My kids love it s11 s40 rice paper
Rating 5 great great great great!!!!! Accessible and quick
Minkys
Hokkaido offers sushi, but very simple sushi. I ordered the salmon lunch box and this is what it came. It was very nice, but simple. If you're into more fancy sushi, you won't find it here. But the sushi is still good!
HungryFitGirl
Not the cleanest little spot and not the most glamorous either however the food tells another story. I used to come here for my sushi fix, as the sushi is very decently priced and tasted REALLY good! Sometimes service was a bit slow, but wasn't terrible either. I've also had some of the menu items which I always managed to polish off so that's great ;)
Russel Roth
Not the most inviting, not upmarket , however what great food. Their sushi is not stuffed with rice , a decent amount of sushi in their hand rolls and fashion sandwiches , the owners are good down to earth hard workers. The chicken and vegetable tepanyaki is really good , and the prices very reasonable. My favourite sushi place for simple no frills good value sushi.

Who wants to eat with the cockroaches? Cook obliged by stepping on them, says sorry and walks away. Order was cancelled and we all went home
Natalia Bonegio
I've been to Hokkaido several times, and I've yet to have a negative experience! What I really enjoy is that their kitchen is open rather late on weeknights and Sundays (til 10 pm, I think), so you can pop through for a quick dinner after that movie or theatre show without worrying about having to go home and cook.

Their sushi is top-notch, with skilled sushi chefs making the classics and original sushi dishes. Their platters are great, and I can recommend the Hokkaido Special Sushi platter (32 pieces) for any small group. The tepanyaki cooking top is also a great way to experience dinner. Their take away service is fast and reliable, and they have many lovely Asian drinks on the menu. My favourite is the jasmine and honey green ice tea.

The service has declined a lot at this establishment since I was last year a few years ago. We waited ages to order. Then our empty plates and glasses sat on the table for ages after we had finished. We were both thirsty. I eventually got up and asked for a waiter, they said someone will come now and we waited longer still. We waited for ages to pay the bill as well. Would much rather go to Rainbow Sushi in Norwood, the service, food quality and prices are great there.
Dani
The food is quite good, that is, if you actually get it
We ordered a tuna "salad" which is tuna, about and noodles. The waitress completely forgot to order both of them so only one came and that took a long time
I think we wait over an hour for our food 😓
Janice Kelvin Leibowitz
Been coming here for so long and actually hadn't visited in a while. Couldn't believe how atrocious the service was! I mean at least employ staff who can understand English! We asked for glasses of iced water and received a glass of ice. Apart from the fact that we waited absolutely ages for our food with no apology, I had ordered beef chop suey and received sweet and sour beef - after I watched the waitress copying the code off the menu when I ordered - and she still got it wrong!! And our bill said 'Sweet and Sour Chicken'!! The only reason we didn't change it was because we'd waited so long and were in a hurry!! Throw into the mix the new, loud bar-type space next-door. It was a very unpleasant experience that I don't think I want to repeat in a hurry.
Janet Hofman
I have this place on speed dial. Hokkaido is my "go to" when I haven't cooked dinner. I haven't eaten in the restaurant for a long while, but I do the take out thing quite often. The restaurant is a mittle manky and the waiters pretty average, but the owners are friendly. The salmon roses are a must.
Josh
Hokkaido is a great gem of a restaurant in the heart of Norwood. The food is outstanding and they have a vast selection which is very affordable and excellent portion sizes.

The sushi is the best in town and made on the spot!

Parking can be a pain along Grant Avenue and area seem a little sketchy but Hokkaido is well worth the visit.
Bryan Turner
Good meals, relatively inexpensive, nice vibe. The sushi was really good although the tuna tasted different to what I usually get from sushi restaurants.
Kaizen
A group of us tried this out on a Friday night. Street parking available. The place was packed and buzzing. Service was slow and the waiter was not very informative. We tried the miso soup and various sushi dishes. The Miso soup was brown - not the colour I am familiar with. The sushi was fresh, tasty and lovely. One of the better sushi places I have been too. Will be back 👍 Be sure to check out the bathroom...
Eleni
My boyfriend and I have been contemplating coming here for quite a while now since we laid eyes on the restaurant a few weeks ago. We were feeling rather hungry due to not eating the whole day and decided to get the sushi buffet for R140 per person.

Our meal started off with some yummy miso soup- which we both are fans of. It was fairly good but a bit salty (but that's miso soup for you)

We then had our sushi. From nigiri to hand roll, to many others. All were really tasty. Although it would be nice if there were a few more vegetarian options. I had their spring rolls as well, which were tasty. But like I said, I wish there were more vegetarian options such as veggie fried noodles or something. But nonetheless, it was still really great.

There's also a chance to have dessert (bow tie and ice cream) included in the price so it's quite cheap.

The only con is the service is a tad slow. And the staff seem a little clueless when it comes to what's inside each sushi.

The decor is really typically Chinese (not western Chinese). So if you're okay with a simple plain restaurant with great food, come on over! You won't regret it.
Daphna Oren
First impressions of this place were not good. The decor is outdated and looks cheap. The doors leading to the restrooms are tatty and do not close properly.

However, the staff are friendly and I was completely taken aback by how tasty and fresh the food was. We ordered a sushi lunch box which was completely delicious to say the least.

Finally, the bill came. We were so impressed with the value for money that my husband and I will ensure to frequent this eatery again.
Roxann Redant
Amazing food at a really affordable price!! Their dim sum (pork dumplings) are so soft and flavourful! The crispy beef is delicious and a generous portion. My boyfriend really enjoyed the crispy duck which was just as much meat as the beef. Definitely a place to go for a good meal on a budget.
Cassi Ozen
Generally had good experiences at Hokkaido. The springrolls come in a portion of 3 - the cheese and crab are delicious! The prawn fried rice is always great! Their sushi is generally quite good. Great value for money! Drinks aren't pricey either which is always a bonus!
Thashen Naidoo
Service is absolutely atrocious. Waiters have no concept of manners and are extremely impolite. Its such a pity that this blemishes the great food and friendliness welcoming nature of the chefs. I wish I could say the amazing food makes up for the bad service but when you have to wait so long for uncooked fish it really makes you wonder what's going on!
Genevieve Law
Grant avenue is quite a dodgy looking area but has many great places to eat - Hokkaido is one of them.

We went on a Friday night. The restaurant was empty when we arrived at 6:30 but filled up throughout the night and was quite full by the time we left. Hokkaido serves both Japanese and Chinese cuisine which u usually frown upon but all of the food seemed very authentic.

The decor is typically "Chinese restaurant" styled. Plastic flowers and lots of red, but the restaurant has an atmosphere of comfort and cosiness to it.

We had the sushi buffet - R140. Unfortunately you can't order roses and you're limited to 3 pieces of sashimi but these pieces are quite substantially sized. Besides that, all the other classics are available as well as a few other non sushi items such as soups, spring rolls, fried noodles, bow ties and ice cream. The sushi is fresh and of a high quality. We enjoyed all our food.

There is a chef manning the teppanyaki station, cooking food for everyone to see. This delighted some of the kids in the restaurant.

Service was fine to begin with but slowed down quite a bit as the restaurant filled up.

We will be back - this restaurant is great value for money. Even when you don't order the buffer, the normal menu prices are very reasonable.

This is currently my favourite Chinese place. Great sushi, great staff and even good hot food as well. I come here at least once a week. Prawn wanton soup, crispy prawns and their new dim sum bbq pork steamed buns are fantastic and worth the affordable prices.
Lior Feigin
Hokkaido is one of my absolute favourite sushi restaurants. It's so conveniently close to me, and the staff are all so friendly. Whether I'm ordering a take-away or sitting down with my boyfriend, the orders are always right, arrive timeously and are so delicious! Definitely a recommendation!
Carla15
What a little unexpected gem of a restaurant! Enjoyed lunch with a friend of mine here outside on the pavement. Such a nice place to sit and watch the world go by. We had spinach and cream cheese gao which was probably the best I have had in South Africa. The sushi was also really good and interesting. I will definitely be back if I have a craving for Asian food again!
Busisiwenkwanyana
I really enjoyed spending my Friday night exploring this sushi place . Drank - boschendal boschen blanc 2014. My Starter was prawn dim sum - really good however prawns tasted overcooked and dim sum itself was under cooked. My Main was the lunch box with salmon hand roll . Was a really good treat and place
Foodeater
Used to eat here often and tried them again yesterday. Had the Salmon lunchboxes as our mains but didn't know that food poisoning came standard. Never again!

I have looked for authentic Japanese cooked food (not sushi) for years, being half Asian and brought up in the UK I am well travelled and very fussy (as well vegetarian). I was amazed at the quality of food served, with authentic ingredients like benito flake and the portion sizes as well as cost outstanding. I will only eat Japanese here from now on. The restaurant is typically Asian in appearance and not fancy so not for everyone

Well after reading all the bad reviews, I was very pleasantly surprised.
As we walked into the restaurant I liked the way the tables were set, with their red and white fabric table cloths (not like the usual plastic ones). However, I must agree with whom ever thought the plastic fake flowers weren't very attractive. I also liked the fish tank that they had. If anyone knows of the significance please let me know as all 3 Chinese Restaurants I have reviewed all have a fish tank so was just wondering.
I ordered Dim Sum (Sui Mai Chicken) and the Salmon Fashion Sandwich. The Dim Sum I have to say wasn't my taste at all, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Salmon Fashion sandwiches which were cut in such a way that made them so easy to pop in your mouth without the embarrassing moments. When they come they look like big pieces but those big pieces are cut into smaller perfect mouth size ones😋
My BF ordered the Teppanyaki Fillet Steak with Vegetables. I tried a bit and it was so tasty and quite delicious, he thought so too. And it was a nice size portion and very reasonably priced.
I even had room for dessert which was Bananas in a Caramal Sauce and I ordered them with ice cream. The combination was so delicious and the ice cream with them is definitely a must.
The service was good and food arrived at a reasonable time, will be back.
Just came back and had the Salmon Sashimi and Rainbow Roll, both fresh and nicely done. Rainbow had Salmon in the inside which I liked and not just veggies. Dessert this time was the Deep Fried Bananas and Ice Cream, also very nice with a golden brown crispyness.
Craig Arenson
Very yum, good value for money. Wife had the honey chicken which was the winner of the meal. My sushi was excellent. Pancakes for dessert were a nice treat. Restaurant had a good vibe. Will return.
Stratos Stavrou
Hokkaido is awesome. Sushi made really well by people that known how to make sushi. Have been eating here for long and never had any problems whatsoever.
Shez
Unappealing look to the place. I get the feeling everything about this place is filthy. I have been ill after having a sushi meal here and won't be returning again...

At night, Norwood in Johannesburg transforms from a quiet, unassuming neighbourhood to one that’s pumping with trendy eateries that you’ll pay an arm and a leg to eat at. Nestled at the top of Grant Avenue, Hokkaido is definitely not one of these places. Don’t be put off by the cheap-looking sign or the management who can barely speak English. Let me tell you why I say this.
Jimmy Nicolaou
We felt like sushi and were deciding whether to go to Hokkaido or Rainbow. Both are good.
We eventually settled on Hokkaido.
We ordered the Salmon hand roll, the Salmon Fashion sandwich and the Salmon Skin sandwich. We thoroughly enjoyed our sushi, but both felt that the Salmon Skin sandwich was a touch too spicy and salty. BUT, overall an enjoyable evening with good food and service.
Hokkaido or Rainbow? I will need to try both again 😄👍
Lee-Anne Jacobs
There is only so much sushi one can eat on a R149 special....🍣🍣 service is more scarce than the one portion of shashimi in the special .....we go out of pure laziness as the location and parking is convenient !
John Risk Golding
After resisting the urge for pizza in favour of something slightly more healthy my girlfriend and I decided on sushi at hokkaido!

The restaurant is not located in the beat of areas to be honest and its the main reason that i've marked down the score, coupled with almost no ambiance. Never been a massive fan of plastic tablecloths and plastic flowers for decoration. We were however very lucky to get probably the most candid (but amazing) waitress I've ever had. She guided us through choosing the best dishes on the menu and advised against a few items. Needless to say she was absolutely on the money and the food was honestly awesome. I would genuinely look through my dim sum photos as I can't remember the names!

With so many good restaurants in norwood and therefore so much competition I'll be trying out a few other restaurants. However i may come back just for takeaway.
Quintin
I lived in the neighbourhood years ago and it was a place to go to and still today, good quality and good pricing as well. The takeaway quantity is very good for the price.
Hokkaido in Norwood has been around quite a while and from what I can see, it is a much loved sushi neighbourhood local on the ever-popular Grant Avenue in Norwood.

I always love my food at this spot and their menu offers extensive Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The sashimi has a good combination of line fish, tuna and salmon in great portions and their extensive dim sum range tastes as good as it looks.

Hokkaido's interiors are modest, clean and typically Chinese with plastic flowers on each table and art and it is always busy when I pop in which is always a good sign.. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. Perfect for a quick bite to eat tucked away in a quiet corner.

*Recommendation: I would highly recommend both the sushi and dim sum as excellent value-for-money!

The Sushi is amazing (the buffet special makes it better on the bank balance as well) and their drinks offering is above expectatuon. My friends also really enjoyed the hot food alternative.
A true Japanese restaurant from the decor to the music, to the food, to the cooking table thing and even the waitresses' uniforms.
The only thing I mark them down on is the fairly average service.
I've been here a few times, and I will definitely return - next time I might be trying the Teppanyaki.

Really great food! I absolutely love their sushi! Also great prices, especially for what you're getting. Everyone from the managers to the service staff are always friendly.

I ended up at Hokkaido the other night as a result of a fearless search for edamame beans in Johannesburg (hallelujah! They have them!). The sushi I had there was great. I got a veggie platter for R70 which I could have never got through on my own. The seating area inside is quite cute too. It's not a high-end luxury sushi experience, but great for take-aways or a cheap and cheerful romantic date. So if you're wanting reliably good sushi and are craving edamame beans, you've found your place.

When it comes to affordable, delicious sushi, this is the number one option. The quality of the sushi is amazing and made with love. The chefs always look enthusiastic when you walk through the doors, which always makes me excited to eat anything that they are making. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new sushi spot.

Good value for money and a decent option to get some quick sushi but I wouldn't recommend as a date night spot. The place isn't very posh and just hope no one orders teppanyaki while you're there cause the whole place gets smoked out and you end up smelling like food yourself!

For value, Hokkaido rains supreme. The quality has picked up again since Mr Lee has returned. The rice is light and uncompressed, the fish good, the seaweed crispy. We've been going for years and Hokkaido is our go to sushi place.

I am not very keen on this place eventhough they have been in business for many years. Their food is quite average and not consistant. I have had better asian meals at other restaurants for the same price, if not cheaper. However, if you are keen for something new try this place as you may enjoy it if you are a meat eater.

For vegetarians there is not a wide array of vegatables that are served in the meals. It is always the same simple veg that is just thrown together. If you are keen for veg soup you will get about a full packet of noodles in a broth with hardly any vegetables.

Like many local chinese restaurants they do have very cliché and cheap finishes in the restaurant like fake flowers. The table service here is always slow so bear that in mind.

A number of years ago, my husband and a couple of friends decided to form a supper club with a difference: every month we go to eat sushi. Hokkaidos was chosen as the venue of choice for these monthly gatherings as the food is always fresh, well prepared and priced very well. Some days the service isn't as good as it usually is but generally it's pretty decent.

Well priced food. Sushi can be up and down sometimes the rice isn't to fresh and I find it sticky. But most of the time the food is great.

Hot meals never dissapoint and are well pricedm Perfect takaway meal.

We love this place. Well priced, good quality and very friendly. It's certainly not fine dining but it's recently become a very regular Friday night habit.

Pretty nice place to get sushi takeaways. The curry was a bit bland but the sushi was good. We'll priced and quick service. Will visit again soon.

My first time here and although I am the only patron I have been served quickly and with a smile. Love the fact I can order my fav sushi (salmon sashimi) per slice..very handy when one portion is too small..tasty main meal of cashew duck and really pleasant glass of savignon blanc. Will be back!

Hokkaido is my go-to for chinese take out or sushi in a hurry. I swear by their chicken chowmein and I have a standing special order that I phone in and pick up on my way home. The service is fast and friendly, the portions are decent and there are always left overs. I had actually never sat down and eaten there until the other day. I must say, it is one of the neater and cleaner "chinese" places to sit and eat in (I think the owners are actually Japanese) and it wasn't unpleasant as it usually is in one of the Cyrilldene Chinatown places. The service is not the greatest - and no we were not served by asians, the waiter was a bit slow on the uptake and he couldn't understand the request for a fried egg over the noodles - american chop suey style, but he was friendly and we had no real issues. The food was fresh and delicious - as usual - we had chicken won ton soup and my special chicken chop suey but with noodles instead of rice. I will never tire of Hokkaido and no matter where else I try chinese take out this will always be my favorite!

This is the best sushi in Joburg- HANDS DOWN!! It's all you can eat is always a crowd pleaser, but just from a "bang for buck" impact it blows all other sushi places out of the water.

My go to sushi spot. Staff are awesome and sushi always good. Have been going there for about 12 years on a regular basis and its always good.

The best chinese restaurant I've ever been to. Food is awesome and amazing. I love how it somehow shifts from normal restaurant to a cosy romantic dinner spot at night. Tried the beer too , it was awesome.

Portions are great, and they even have the whole "chef preparing food" while you watch situation. No disappointments if you come here.

My favorite take away sushi spot. The owner is such a sweet man, remembers all his regular customers, stayed open late for me one night when I couldn't get away from work. If you're looking for simple delicious sushi like you would get at your Japanese friend's house...this is the place to go.

The last time I went here was for take aways. I ordered their crispy chicken followed by severe food poisoning. I have never been back. I am truly disappointed in this restaurant as it used to be one of my favorite places.

This is not a fancy, first date type restaurant. The furnishings and decor are basic - think plastic flowers! However the sushi is amazing - always fresh, authentic sushi chefs behind the counter and very generous portion sizes. The prices are also super. I have eaten at Hokkaido for 5 years now at least twice a month. If you are a sushi lover and don't need beautiful decor or are happy with take aways you can't beat this place.

At first glance Hokkaido seems a bit dodgy. But we used to enjoy coming to Hokkaido occasionally for the R140 sushi buffet, as their sushi is usually good.
But the last time we went to Hokkaido with a group of friends we were very disappointed.
The fish in our sushi was off. When fish is fresh, it does not particularly smell or taste fishy, but this fish reeked!
Needless to say we have not been back there since.

For more reviews, check you: http://lexieats.tk/
