Really really really delicious baked goods and the coffee is revolutionary make sure to get it with coconut milk, you will not go wrong.
I didn’t stay to eat, but the staff was very friendly, they informed me of all the current specials they were running and they got my order ready very quickly. And of course, the cake was delicious and fresh!

They have a wonderful array of cakes and the overall ambience is very calm. We ordered a chocolate croissant and a pear and almond tart: I enjoyed it.
They also have cakes in the freezer which you buy and take home to serve later. I know where my next Birthday cake is coming from ;)
Mouth watering display of cakes and pastries...absolutely sinful! My favorite is their almond croissant filled with almond butter (yummeee!) and their apple crumble! But honesty I don’t think you can go wrong with any of their pastries.
OMG the best cake ever. I am a lover of orange chocolate and their Austrian Chocolate Mousse cake is amazing. It's going to be hard to walk past Chateau Gateau without stopping in future.
Lovely cake shop with a wide variety and excellent service. Our favourites are the cheesecakes (lemon and strawberry), cookies and cream and the chocolate mud pie. These don’t last long enough for me to take pictures. They also serve frozen cakes perfect for celebrations. With 45mins free parking, this is a great place for a stopover before or after work.

Love cute cake and coffee places. Generally the name Chateau Gateaux is associated with delicious cakes in a variety of options. My only reason for visiting is to spoil myself with a treat of melt in your mouth decadence. And this is definitely achieved with the Rococo!!

My fav place to hang out on Sunday mornings - I was living nearby and I would walk by illovo to enjoy a crispy cool morning with a cup of hot cappuccino and indulge in a sweet pastry - I loved their almond pastry and would always order it every time I would go there. It was crispy on the outside and soft and gooey inside.
My favourite spot, I enjoy coming here having a cup of coffee & trying a new slice of some cake I had last when I was a child or never even had ever before. So as far as their core business 100 % achieved the coffee & cake are excellent.
It's a coffee shop, patisserie there is so much more that could have been done to create a better ambience but unfortunately for me it's non existent, most times I've been there it's empty which to me speaks volumes about an ambience not being present.
The display is good & mouth watering, staff are always friendly but if I could give you any advice; it would be to place your order at the counter because they don't make a huge effort to assist you at the tables (I'm not sure if that's there policy)?!?
I normally order the big frozen cakes for an occasion so my review is purely based on that because I have not tried their individual options.
I personally bought the B1. It should actually be renamed to death by chocolate. This is so decadent and rich that even if you want another piece you can't.
My cousins ordered the red velvet and carrot cake which I tasted a piece of each and this is no let down either. These 2 are the best that I have tasted.
All in all. If you're looking to get your fix on cakes this is the place. I've never been let down.
These cakes are delicious and wonderfully indulgent! The presentation and styling is tad cheesy, but it's made up for by good quality ingredients and proper baking skill. Well worth the couple of hundred rands if you're getting a celebration cake.

I have had bought both the black forest and the mozart cake and followed the instructions to thaw it. Both were absolutely delicious. The cherries in the black forest was still frozen after leaving it out for the required time, not too nice on a cold day.
Perfect date with my husband. Cakes are always well worth the cheat day.

25.03.2017 Stopped here to get some indulgent treat's for the family. I was amazed at the variety this small shop has. I was also impressed that they were reasonably priced compared to other patisseries.
You can either go for the decadent slices or the petite small delicacies which look more like art than food. I took some plain croissants which were absolutely flaky and divine. Along with an apple tart, caramel tart, chocolate tart and a cheesecake. Family enjoyed it.
Staff were friendly and helpful, I noticed there was a huge fridge with the frozen versions of cake for sale too.
The staff is helpful and friendly. They have the most divine coffees! I would suggest that you try their passionate lemon cheesecake. You will not be disappointed.
This is the best place to get dessert from in Joburg. Every item is made to look beautiful and the taste is just as amazing. My firm favourites are the Chocolate Fondant, the Mississippi Mud Pie and the Lemon Meringue Tart. The cakes are also delicious. What a little gem ❤

What's not to like with this french influenced bakery. Firstly the cakes and pastries are to die for. Secondly they make really good coffee. Flat white paired with hot freshly baked croissant - hell yes!!

I am a sucker for pastries and dessert so any place with a good-looking dessert menu automatically goes on my bookmark list.
When we arrived at the Thrupps Centre and I spotted the Château Gâteaux Patisserie from across the parking lot I knew we would not leave until I had acquired a slice of cake.
Initially I was a little disappointed with how it looked from the outside but I suppose that's to be expected when a venue boarders the parking lot. It didn't have that clean, almost romantic feeling I feel it should have.
The waiting staff were friendly, eager to please, and quickly pointed out the most popular cakes and pastries. We ended up leaving with a slice of the Roccoco Chocolate Gâteaux, a slice of the Mozart Gâteaux and a Mississippi Mud Pie. All of our desserts were decedent and delicious but the Roccoco Chocolate Gâteaux was by far the best.
Overall we had a wonderful experience that was made even better by the heavenly desserts we left with. I cannot wait to return again and try another delicious dessert.
Now I know what the hype is about. Pretty setting, good service and the cakes are consistently the Best I've had, especially the Mozart cake!

We have tried quite a lot of the cakes and tarts on offer, and have enjoyed all. We have not dined there, so can't comment on service from that angle.
My friends bought my birthday cake from this branch and it was absolutely delicious! They got the Walnut Truffle cake and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cake was also really big and I decided to freeze the remainder and save some for a few weeks later. I was slightly skeptical about how it would taste after defrosting but to my surprise it still tasted just as great. I've heard that they can actually be kept frozen for up to year which is great. Will definitely be visiting the branch soon to try their other cakes. I've heard the Mozart is just as amazing.
This is my go-to cake shop. I'm pretty sure this place is what heaven looks like. I'd have to say that walnut truffle cake is my favourite, followed by the B1 cake and the chocolate mousse cake. The cheesecakes are amazing too.

After a week of craving nothing but carrot cake, I decided to stop by the patisserie I've heard so much about. I went with a friend, Jolene, and we shared a slice of Swiss carrot cake, which could easily be some of the best carrot cake I've had. We also shared a passion lemon cake, and a chocolate brownie. As neither of us have that big of a sweet tooth, we didn't end up finishing it all, but it was divine.
I'd definitely buy one of their cakes for a future birthday or function. Can't wait to go back again!
We decided to stop here for a cheat treat and we were very impressed. The little shop is very cosy and the cakes on display are beautiful. We had trouble choosing, but ended up choosing 3 treats - the carrot cake, the lemon cheesecake and chocolate brownie. I loved that they weren't too sweet and were so full of flavour. Will definitely come back soon.
Their mini desserts are presented so beautifully. We grabbed a few after dinner and unfortunately I was disappointed. Some were pretty good and some were just average. Perhaps they're better in the mornings when fresh.
Their cakes on the other hand, are utterly delicious. I've tried several slices and the quality is always top notch. We bought a cookies and cream cake, not only was the price quite reasonable for a gourmet cake but it's the best cake I've ever had. It's just the right combination of all the elements of the cake. The mousse just melts away in your mouth like an ice cream topped off with some crunch from the cookies.

Such a nice spot to have a coffee and a piece of cake with your friends. It's very centrally and conveniently located in Thrupps Centre in Illovo. It feels very Parisian like. The service is also top notch. Ordered a birthday cake from them and it was absolutely delicious- not one piece left! Would recommend 100% - especially if you have a sweet tooth. 🎂

Popped into Château Gateaux in Illovo. Having already had my 2 cups of coffee for the day , I tried their steamed chai latte. It was delicious and not too sweet. I asked for recommendations regarding the cakes and was told their B1 chocolate cake was a customer favourite. Great cake. But super rich and dense. Probably good to share with a friend! Service was great too, with the manager coming to check that all was OK. Will be back -but with a friend if I want more cake; couldn't finish my slice alone!

With perfect sized treats in a wide range you will struggle to choose what to nibble on whilst you enjoy your coffee. I am a little scared I discovered this gem - I will be back time and again until I have tried the full range of goodies.
Love the cakes on sale here, they are a firm favourite and we come back to order for every birthday or special event. The Mozart cake and the chocolate Mozart versions are by far the best. I love the mini cakes available, they are so cute. I really enjoyed their caramel velvet cake, a nice change from the red velvet
Update : The coffee here is not the best, have been disappointed a few times. Today I ordered a hazelnut latte and found it quite lacking. The Hot Mud Pudding did make up for it though!

This is a sort walk from my office and as a result it has become one of our favourite spots for a celebration.
We came to celebrate the three of my colleagues one year anniversary at our company.
We arrived and were greeted by friendly staff as we pressed our noses (figuratively) against the glass display and decided what to order.
We all mostly chose something different which meant that we got to have tastes of everything. I had a coconut cream cake which was delicious and light as a feather to eat. Othet friends choose chocolate mousses and cherry apple cakes. Everything was yummy- especially with our cappuccinos.
My only critism was that the cakes that needed to be warmed took some time to arrive.
Splended place for cakes, I am sure we will celebrate here in the future.

This is such an awesome bakery/cafe and is usually the best place to grab a dessert or two a day before an event as its frozen so stays fresh. My absolute favourite is the Mozart, that is layer of crispiness, cream, nuts and minimal cake. Its divine. Lemon and strawberry cheesecake is also delish as well as the cookies and cream (giant Oreo). You are spoilt for choice and the little options are great if you cant choose just one cake. Its great to meet a friend for cake and tea, an awesome venue for a bridal/baby shower and also awesome for an after dinner treat in Illovo.I love how they add the special touches of a ribbon and even ask whats the occasion and try to match the ribbon to it.
One of my favourite patisseries in town. The cheese cakes are my absolute favorite. It's a place I always visit when I'm nearby. Other things I really enjoy here is also the chocolate croissant and the almond danish.
Love their Cheese cake and Tiramisu, the black forest was a bit too sweet. Appreciate the take away box divider. Takea away cake is about R27 a piece which is reasonable.

A piece of Paris in the heart of Sandton. You can really order anything on the menu; and it is guaranteed to melt in your mouth and have you coming back for more. Their coffees and teas are just as delicious.

The best place to go and pick up a late birthday cake or for a special occasion. I usually get my B-day delights here , this year went back to get the yummy cookies and cream. Service for the first time was horrific , the server at the stand refused to get our cake and give some assistance. But the front desk man was pretty pleasant. Yet it's more about how amazing there gateaux are !!! From boxing to taste and care!!!! Love there stuff!!!!!!

I love how they have smaller cakes for tasting and larger ones which you can buy for an occasion. The coffee? Perfect. And if you don't have a sweet tooth, there's lovely gourmet sandwiches and pies to choose from. We will be back!
C'est magnifique! Chateau Gateaux is a perfect little spot for those of you who have a craving for some cake and coffee/tea. I had the privilege of enjoying a visit to this establishment for a mid-morning snack with a friend.
The selection of cakes is astounding. And every single cake looks delicious. Their cake is not the only sweet morsel on offer. I was not in the mood for cake, so I opted for a small pecan-nut and cashew tartlet with fresh cream. It was to say, the most delicious pecan-but tart I have EVER tasted. I enjoyed a hot and flavoursome cappuccino with my snack. The service is friendly and professional.
The establishment is roomy and has a lovely atmosphere. I thoroughly believe it is worth what you pay. I will return for some more cake and possibly even make use of them to cater for future parties.

Fabulous patisserie with a huge selection of beautifully crafted, decadent desserts. The Belgica caramel tart was heavenly and the hot mud pudding was perfectly rich and gooey. Chateau Gateaux is definitely my new favourite patisserie!!!

The cakes are delicious and classic with a twist. If you had to close your eyes and guess what you were eating you'd be there all day, the flavored are bold and complimentary. It is reasonably priced. I would recommend the cookies and cream cake or the red velvet.

My personal favourites are the Fudge Picasso and the Swiss Carrot Cake. Perfect Sunday midday spot for a cup of coffee and some amazing cake.

Is there a down side to this spot; could be that the prepared cakes take 2 to 3 hours to defrost; or it could be the matter of my expanding waistline if this becomes a habit!

A very quaint little place with quite a large selection of cakes and other sweets. I think I must have walked up and down for about five minutes before I decided to settle for the lemon meringue tart. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was really good nevertheless.

Chateau Gateaux is an amazing patisserie in the heart of illovo. The mozzart cake is simply amazing and the picasso cake is like a real piece of art! A real little Paris cafe in joburg!
As the name would suggest, Chateau Gateaux, is a little European styled bakery and tea room. You order beautiful little cakes and desserts from the counter and pair them with tea and coffee. The savory menu on offer is limited to sandwiches and rolls (about 6 choices) so this little spot offers an opportunity to make a date for tea and cake with a friend or loved one - whilst a quaint idea and a cute bakery I am not sure I will be back. We tried a cookies and cream cake, which was delicious and a praline inspired cake, which was less delicious given its rather gelatine consistency. The bakery also stocks full cakes to take home for parties or gatherings with friends. The cakes taste good but given their cold storage and the fact that they are prepared in advance, they lose that soft, just baked texture.
A colleague from work bought a cake from here and shared it with us for his birthday. Absolutely delectible. A wonderful cake. Rich chocolate that tasted just right. Melt in your mouth guilty pleasure. I shall be familiarising mtelf with this placd.

I'm obsessed with their cakes. They've become cakes for every single birthday in our family. Had a cake date with some friends on a Sunday afternoon after having lunch somewhere else, this was perfect because it wasn't very busy. We tried their watermelon crush thing , it's a really refreshing summer time drink , for me it was like sour sweet which I love and for my friend it was too sweet. It's worth a try on a really hot day!
Great cakes, and friendly staff. Their coffee is average, which places it high above a Wimpy coffee ☕️

This place is so quiet and peaceful! Their cakes are amazing. I went there last time but the cakes were still a bt frozen but the waiter informed us prior to serving it to us and we were okay with it. It is very hygienic and the staff are super kind!
The cakes here are out if this world, whenever I think of cake, this is the only place I think of, they have ruined my enjoyment of cake from other stores as they can never come close to the level these cakes are on.
My favorite has to be the red velvet 😋... I bought the frozen one and I was a bit skeptical about the "freshness", once melted it tasted as good as the fresh one, honestly worth every cent!

Delicious! Delicious! Delicious! And such friendly service too I had to look around and remind myself that I'm still in Joburg. What a pleasant experience from the tasting and everything. They team is also very knowledgeable about their goodies and make excellent recommendations based on your sweet tooth. Try the lemon granadilla cheese cake, changed my life.

Walking into this store felt like dying and waking up in cake heaven! It reminded of the boutique chocolatiers I've been accustomed to from living in Cape Town for the last 9 years. The selection of cakes is literally mind-blowing, I just couldn't decide what to have. And when the food did arrive, it felt like a thousand fairies were dancing on my tongue - all in sync. I'm leaving four stars because the staff could do with a sprinkle of customer service training, although the food is beyond amazing. If management can fix that, I'll add the fifth star. Be prepared to be to delighted!
