Review Great Dane - Johannesburg

Simply awesome - trendy, welcoming, buzzing with great music and drinks deals. My friend and I stumbled upon this bar and met his local friend for an evening session. The place was packed with hip young locals relaxing to an excellent soundtrack of classic hip-hop and R&B, as well as some modern EDM and house mixed in too. There were 2 for 1 deals on cocktails until 1900, which we certainly took advantage of! It was an awesome place to relax and soak in the local scene. The rear terrace is the place to be, but seating is limited so arrive early to get an area. The food menu also looked very appetising.

The Great Dane is a very chilled spot in the heart of braamfontein which is a predominantly student/young professional area. The think most amazing about Great Dane is the open chilled area at the back where u can relax or go dance inside

Awesome place. Drinks are reasonably priced. The music depends on which DJ is playing. However there is an indoor and outdoor area so that's enjoyable Also if you look closely the floor has 5cent coins decorating the entire dance floor. It's awesome and detailed!

The service at bar is quick, they make great cocktails and their beers are cold. The crowd is diverse and interesting. The music is on point and is great quality. It gets very crowded during rainy whether as a portion of the venue is outside. Do bring cash in case you have to entrance , for example on a Friday night, as there is no speed point at the door but the bar does take cards.

A great vibe! I went for the Sunday Roast on the 1st of September. The food is delicious and aesthetically pleasing. There were loads of drinks to choose from. My only complaint is one of their security guards. He was rude to me and wouldn't let me get BACK in even though I had the stamp on my wrist. He kept saying we must pay R50 to get back in.

I used to frequent it back when I was a student. Still very youthful and fun. Realised I can't keep up anymore lol.

Had an overall amazing experience! The venue pulls in a relatively young crowd. The place did get tightly packed after a few hours of being there and the wait to get served at the bar is quite tiring. But overall, it's a lovely venue to let loose!!

Visited the place at night and it was fun, the music that was being played was fantastic and the outside area provided a nice breathe of fresh air after dancing and the atmosphere was very vibrant. This is a bar I recommend going to if you looking for to go to a club without the whole "club type" environment

Only open from Thursday but it's a vibe miss the old days to be honest , was a mixed crowd and vibe made you dance all night

Lovely bar, the floor is made out of thousands upon thousands 5c coins which is quite the look. Bar staff is consistent, respectful and fast. The events that are done there tend to be some of the best in the city (here I cite Sunday Roast)

Such a great place to have drinks with friends on Saturday afternoon, dance all night on Thursdays evening and meet new people at any day of the week. They do have a great selection of gourmet boerwors rolls but mostly a vibe for the drinks and the great music.

This is one of the most inclusive spaces in Braam, inexpensive and great space to be in. Being here with a couple of friends on a warm Saturday afternoon is always a jol. I would recommend spending afternoons here for safety reasons. Overall this place is really awesome.

Masepa fela..... Your bouncers are abusive and they have no customer care!!! They run that club like its their house....You treat us like we are desperate for a spot there. FIX this problem its getting out of hand.

For most of us, going to Great Dane is after being at neighborhoods.<br/>It’s therefore difficult to rate the food, we are usually from eating and just drink there and enjoy and very good vibe.<br/>It has a great energy and nice djays.<br/>I highly recommend you for the afternoon and evening.

Weekend chilling at this place is everything! Very cool spot to hang with friends after a session at the market. Can’t say much about the food as we went there for drinks after lunching at Neighborgoods.

So I went and then turned around. My friend and I went in looked at each other and made an immediate about turn . I don't think there's anything wrong with this place as the great reviews are what got us to the door in the first place , but go if you love the on top each other vibe . It seemed rather cramped. We promised we'd try it out again , we have to , I mean it is The Great Dane 😂

This is one of my favourite hangout spots in Joburg & there's hardly ever a week when I don't come here. I don't eat here very often, but the times I do, I am never disappointed. I usually have the Boerbull, which is their boerewors roll in a seeded bun. They recently added some new stuff to their menu, which I tried & I was not disappointed at all. We had a snack basket which comes with sliced sausage, ribs & chicken strips. All were lovely, I just wish that the rib bones were a lot smaller cause they are quite tough to eat with the long length. Their drinks are lovely too - I HIGHLY recommend their Long Island; which is my personal favourite. They also have a buy one get one free special for their cocktails till 7pm. Definitely one of my favourite places in Braamfontein.

I mean I wouldn't eat at here but it's a great hangout spot! If you're looking for a great spot to hangout on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon it's a must! Try it out it's where all the cool kids are

Nice trendy sport in the heart of Braamfontein. Cool music and a busy vibe with a lot of youngsters. Food is like street food or finger food, but at least tasty. Was extremely busy over the weekend and massive Q outside to get in. Once patrons leave, they let other in, then once inside it does not get any better as it feels like a club inside.

Guys, when you come here you know you're up for a good night. This places rocks on weekend nights, obe of the first nights i went out in jozi was here, epic guys

I guess you come here to drink and jol. They have a nice little menu of hotdogs too that all sound delicious, but they're just okay. They're super after a night of drinking though, and not badly priced. If you're looking for a restaurant then go somewhere else, maybe Daleahs.

I've never come for the food but I love coming here to get some drinks. It's a great venue and whenever I'm entertaining guests from overseas we come here for a night out and they absolutely love it.

Absolutely LOVE this place! Looking for a great night out? Great Dane is the place to be, basement vibes when walking in (due to dark decor and furniture) but when one walks out into the courtyard the place completely transforms. Young crowd, loud music and drinks flowing. Recommend it to students, young adults and travelers passing through Joburg.

The vibe is great and you kind of get the feel from the decor that its going to be one of those too-cool-for-school kind of experineces, but you would be wrong. Everyone that i have encountered there have been uber nice and have the same idea as you when you go there - chilled "jol" with some mates.<br/><br/>The bar service is not particularly inspiring, but you kind of expect it. On a Saturday afternoon is gets quite packed so make sure you get in before the rush after Neighbourgoods Market closes.<br/><br/>I can't really comment on the food, but from what i have seen it looks quite appetizing!<br/><br/>A definite must see in Jozi!

What an awesome vibey place! We absolutely love Great Dane and its atmosphere. It is loud and dark and smokey and crowded and wonderful. We have never been here without walking away having had amazing conversations with strangers. The food never disappoints either. But beware, not for those seeking a quiet romantic evening.

I heard it's a great place to have Friday afternoon drinks right through to the evening. Pity I didn't make it inside. Disappointed at how my two friends & I were treated at the door upon requesting a table to place our champagne bottles because we obviously CANNOT walk around carrying Ice buckets! They demanded seeing R5000 in cash which I produced in a matter of seconds but still not satisfied. Anyway, What I love about Chris at Taboo & Cocoon Sandton, he ALWAYS provides a table in V.I.P on a weekly basis. It's true, we should have stayed in our lane.

Great place for drinks; if it's a chilled afternoon in the courtyard or a night out on the town. Yet to try their hotdogs but sure they won't disappoint. Great dane = great vibe

The food menu that they have is very limited but their hot dog and chips are splendid and definitely worth it. The drinks selection is so good and is their main attraction! A very trendy and vibey place that is ideal for some late drinks with friends or to meet new people!

Great Dane is located in the heart of braam. They have the most life changing hot dogs/boerie rolls coupled with a bar like feel, it's a nice place just to chill with your mates. It's not your typical stuffy fake hipster place like other places in Braam. You have to try the Big Mac Hotdog #GameChanger. #ShazlovesFood

If you want a jol and a shot in a little jam jar..this is the place!! It's decor is weird and out of this world-5c flooring, dart board collage and hanging lamp shades outside. <br/><br/>They serve hot dogs in all different styles. I will never go back there after last night. I have been visiting Great Dane since it opened, I was here when they placed the coins on the floor and waited weeks for them to dry.<br/><br/>Last night I was treated in the worst way a paying patron could ever be treated. I was continuously insulted by a bar man seconds before ordering my very first drink upon arriving at this venue. He went on to discuss my appearance and his dislike for my looks. He also questioned my femininity and I wondered how a place visited by so many colours and people of different sexual preferences a allow such staff member behaviour. I asked him to repeat himself since the music might have dubbed some of his filthy words. He confidentiality repeated himself, stating that he is a man and this is a drinking hole where such remarks will be made so I must deal with it. I was so shocked! He then showed me his manager who also found it amusing. My boyfriend asked him to apologise and he laughed and told him that I was not ready for his apology. WOW!!!!!<br/><br/>I don't know if this way of customer service is in the Grate Dane staff training manual or he thinks he now owns that establishment. I will never go there again. <br/><br/>Never ever! <br/><br/>Management needs to do something about this because this is not the first time and I'm not the only one.

A quaint little bar located in the heart of Braamies, it's a great place to chill after spending the morning at the nearby Neighbourgoods Market. The decor is hipster chic, from the floor adorned with 5 cent pieces to the mismatched lamp shades in the outdoor area. The bartenders are friendly and I simply adore their mini mason jar shot glasses! Admittedly I've never tried the food but I'm told they make a mean hot dog.

I went to Great Dane on a Saturday evening. The place was too crowded and it was difficult to get service at the bar. The place is best suited for university and college students.

So just happened to pop into Braamfontein for coffee and the friend we were with suggested we go to Great Dane ..at last ! It has been on my husband's to do list forever. I didn't see any signage so you have to know its there - and the floor really is made up of 5 cent pieces poor chap who had to lay all those !! It wasn't busy but service was prompt<br/>And we sat outside - very quirky with lampshades hanging outside in the courtyard. Ordered two Plane Janes and they come with skinny fries - yummy mustard - for a hotdog it was delicious. Spent an hour with beers, hotdogs and the rush of Braamies miles away - what is not to love but I believe after dark you can't move it' so busy so do what we did and duck in there late afternoon. My husband is insisting we go back so he can try ALL of menu !!

Trying to call during the week to make the booking was difficult as they never answer their phone. Thankfully I received an email back confirming the booking. On arriving we were made to wait a while after asking where our booking was. It seemed to take ages for them to find our table. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the crowd is more alternative. <br/><br/>Once we were seated, our waiter was fantastic! He had to work really hard as we were a table of 25 people. Their menu was nice and simple, it had a variety of hot dog/borie rolls. I had the big mac which was a hot dog with mac and cheese! It was tasty and exactly what I needed. As the night progressed a dance floor was created inside, it became very festive.

Great Dane is definitely one of the coolest, trendiest and vibiest places at the moment. Located in the same street as kitcheners and anti establishment its got quite an unassuming entrance, at least until you're awestruck by the 5 cent covered floor. <br/><br/>We came through here for a friends birthday and had a table in the outside section which is just fantastic. You feel like you're living in your own little pocket of heaven in there. The ambiance is very hipster with old light fittings stretched across the section, the 5 cent floor, and the wall of the DJ box inside which is covered in open books. The drinks aren't that pricey in comparison to other places and the food was actually surprisingly good. They serve an uncomplicated hot dog menu that absolutely hits the spot when you've had a bit to drink. Having had my hot dog before the drinking began I can confidently comment on how tasty it was. The service was just fantastic and I appreciated the good humor of our waiter and just how much he looked after us. Ask for Ken Lee by name!<br/><br/>Can't wait to come back here!!

Great Dane is great for a late night meal. Different types of boeries (like the KFC or Mac n Cheese) and shoe-string fries. They also have a petite, yet delightful selection of cocktails. You can also have a early afternoon meeting there, or book the place out on a Sunday for a really fun vibe. But mostly, they have great DJs at night. Ask for a Super C shot at the bar (and keep 'em coming). They used to have a 'secret password' at the door, but now it's just a normal queue. Make sure to join them on #FirstThursdays with Jagermeister, #FriDane for some underground house music, and come early on Saturdays as it tends to get really full with the Neighbourhoods Market-crowd.

I cant vouch to the food as I have never eaten here but I saw the food coming out and it looked mighty tasty.<br/><br/>This spot is great for a Saturday drinks and dance after neighbour goods market closes. Its hipster and vibey and turns into a melting pop of different cultures, ethnicity and ages. <br/><br/>The music is house with a bit of old school in it. The decor is unique, with hanging lamp shades, polished concrete floors with 5c set pieces into it.<br/><br/>The star case running up the outside which you can sit on, makes you feel like you out of a music video set to some ghetto Lauren hill movie.<br/><br/>It is  must even if just for a quick drink and a dance.at 3 in the afternoon.

Great Dane is by far my favorite bar. The place is so fantastic that you find yourself becoming a regular, with great drinks and a killer boerie roll and fries, it's the way to anyone's heart, while they dance to amazing music.

Great Dane in Braamfontein was one of those places that I have heard about from several people, and I couldn't resist trying out this quirky bar after a day at the market. The first thing that I noticed as I walked in was that the floor was covered in five cent coins and that everyone there had come to party! The service was good, the party vibe was infectious, the drinks were reasonable and so it wasn't long before I thought that the DJ was playing 'my song' ;). What a cool bar!  *Recommendation: I have since heard that they make the most incredible gourmet hotdogs so I will be sure to go back and post some pics.

Jo'burg's answer to Gourmet Boerie, only without being restricted to boerie. There's even a falafel option for the veggies. It's got a nice courtyard outside and is a rear place to relax with friends. Come early on a weekend though or be willing to contend with the throngs for a place to sit.

Great dane gets a great rating.<br/>Hidden just across from Neighbourgoods , with no signage , you would miss it if you didn't look twice, or knew about it from word of mouth.<br/>The decor is a feast for the eyes, simple items used to create decor that leaves you staring in amazement. <br/>The floor is made up of 5c pieces with an epoxy laminate over it throughout the inside section. <br/>The walls are strewn with dart boards and the DJ Box made up of old brief cases, the outside section is made up of piled up pallets with chairs surrounding.<br/><br/>Saturdays are great fun with a live DJ spinning up the decks all afternoon into the evening,although it can become cramped, the patrons are very friendly and I found myself forgetting a lot of names while visiting.<br/><br/>The Simple yet delicious menu of gourmet hotdogs is a must try if that's your thing , there is also a wide variety of cocktails and house shooters like the super C.<br/><br/>Overall a great vibe and ambiance!

Awesome place!<br/><br/>It is very artsy and chic. You need to see their floor, they've made it with coins, very original. Their inside patio is super original as well, they have very cool lamps hanging out there in the little urban garden. They have a lot of cool stuff, you can get cool ideas from them!<br/><br/>Their distinctive thing is they only offer gourmet Hot Dogs ❤ crazies and delicious!!! <br/><br/>You can go there any Saturday and they will have an excellent crowd dancing to great and fun music.<br/><br/>It is a little bit pricey but it is totally worth it! Thumbs up to Great Dane!

The Great Dane is a cool little pub. It's always vibey with good music and great company. The food is good but the booze is a bit pricey. Oh, and the coin floor is too cool for words.
