Review The Curry Palace - Johannesburg

Alma Pretorius
It's a smallish restaurant - been there since 2006. Over the weekend I've scanned their online menu ('cause that's what I do), so I had a good idea what to order. We knew there were going to be leftovers - but since it was our 1st visit to this restaurant, I wanted to try a few things. As we sat down, the waitress put crispy cumin seed papadam (poppadom) with 3 dipping sauces on the table. So delicious and all 3 dipping sauces were great! Under the 'breads', they have a Stuffed Keema Paratha. (Keema Paratha is an Indian flatbread where the spicy and flavourful minced mutton mixture is stuffed into a whole wheat flour dough and it looks like a pizza.) IT WAS DELICIOUS! But on the photo you can see the green chilli slice .... it was hot, but soooo nice! I had to order a sweet Lassi (yoghurt, milk and sugar) to cool my mouth. Of course 2/3 of this bread was taken home. I didn't plan to order samosas, but then Hein saw a photo ... their samosas look like pyramids - we normally buy these Punjabi samosas from Urban Tadkka - Indian Cuisine, Northlands Corner, Northriding. I was curious to taste them .... but for me the dough was too thick. Hein liked them. (Yes, I know I'm full of ........ but I like what I like.) Onto the main deal ... curries. Hein ordered a Hot Lamb Rogan Josh. I chose the Butter Chicken. Rice is included and we ordered a Garlic Naan bread. OH MY GOSH! The curries were just A-MA-ZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exactly what we wanted!!!! And the naan bread .... my golly goodness, such a big bread and sooooooooooo good!!!!!!! Hein finished his Rogan Josh - I had a few mouthfuls of mine .... LEFTOVERS!!!!!!! If you're looking for great curry in Randburg, visit The Curry Palace in Ferndale!!!!!!!!

Bought chicken soup (delicious), samoosas are brilliant in taste and size. The bunny is really good. When I visit Johannesburg again I will definately buy my food at the Curry Palace again. I forgot to mention value for money.

Situated inside the Ferndale shopping center this lovely Bombay style (well at least that’s how it feels inside for me )curry palace just has the creamiest most freshest menu ever, ever single meal is fresh and tasty. The waiters the management everyone is just so amazing. The pricing of the wines and food is really really great value for money. It does get very packed consistently and over the years just shows the quality of the food. The space is always clean, take away or eat it you just can’t go wrong with this curry paradise.

Beautiful, very clean restaurant. Food was very delicious with friendly staff. Can recommend them anytime for a nice bunny chow

A wonderful place to be on a cold winter's night. A good curry experience. 😃 Conveniently located and peaceful. I remarked to my waitress to let the chef know that as you approach the restaurant, the delightful aromas of their spices waft tantalising to the nose. I chose Lamb Korma (without the bone - that was optional) cashew and cream sauce. Portion was even slightly too much, so I have some for home. Worth the visit!

My best food is hot chicken curry me and my wife always Injoy curry palace food

Don't let the tired decor fool you. This is seriously good food and great value for the price. Our second time here and we had samosas, paneer masala, and garlic naan. All very well prepared, and the naan is clearly cooked the authentic way. The service is also very attentive and friendly. Highly recommended !

Take out food was okay but we were short delivered on the naan bread. We took it up with the restaurant and Mr. D . Alli from the restaurant confirmed that the order was filled and they have continuous problems with the drivers from Mr Mr.D. helping themselves into customers orders. Mr.D offered us a voucher as compensation .. small gesture after having your ordered tampered with.

Tried the Chicken Makhnie, Chicken Curry and a Garlic Naan last night. Ordered them hot and they were indeed hot. Would not recommend the hot, if Nandos hot is your limit, this is slightly hotter and would suggest the medium rather. The curry's though had exceptional flavour and would definitely be back for the chicken makhnie (butter chicken). The garlic naan bread was the highlight - fluffy on the top and delicately toasted at the bottom with a decent spread of garlic. Will surely be back for that. My only negative was the "Burfee Ice Cream" that we tried for dessert... this was Vanilla Ice Cream with coconut sprinkled over top and definitely no burfee flavour whatsoever.

Delicious Indian food experience. Highly Recommended. Small area of about twelve tables and fifty seating capacity. In a one level shopping centre with convenient parking in front.

The best restaurant in town❤️ Been going there for years and the quality is always excellent! The staff are very friendly and go out of there way to make your experience extra special. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The restaurant in Ferndale is our favourite out of the whole of Jozi. Great service, fantastic food.

Best Indian restaurant in JHB, and bonus, not licensed, so no corkage

The best curry I’ve ever had, you cannot go wrong with this place, we go back time after time and the quality is always great. It’s not the fanciest restaurant decor wise but it really doesn’t matter when they serve the best curry in Jhb!!
Our favourites are the mince samosas, chicken korma, lamb gosht badame, butter chicken and the beef makhnie.

Have been a regular for more than 10 years. Food is absolutely delicious. Service very hands-on and very friendly. Extremely clean. Would definitely recommend.

Went there randomly looking for a new place to eat at. The food was amazing. Really delicious. Better than I had expected, making a plan to go again!

Mild food is watered down medium. My mild bunny chow basically tasted like water. The medium paneer lacked any flavour as well. Service was friendly though. This was my second visit and I was equally unimpressed the first time. Not recommendedq

I was craving for curry so decided to pop by for a take away. I ordered a vegetarian breyani. It was very flavourful. It did not have as much veggies as I had expected but it did have some paneer so that was a pleasant surprise. Would visit again to taste their other dishes.

Nice food, friendly service great price, I like this place since opened. Can miss to be there at least twice a week. Very decent dinning 😁😁😁

Great service.. Great food. We always do take out.Their mild is still a tad hot for kids. Bill a lot less than expected. Will continue to frequent them.

When I want curry, I visit The Curry Palace. Excellent service by extremely hard working staff, good North Indian cuisine, ample portions (normally resulting in take-awsys) and reasonable prices. There is no alcohol on sale but you are welcome to bring your own with no corkage charged resulting in a very inexpensive meal. One of my regular haunts.

Absolutely in love with their food. Friendly service and super helpful to accommodate according to ones palette. Best hidden gem in Randburg
Marilyn Cilliers (Chivers)
Fabulous curry. Have never had a bad experience here. Their kormas are great, and so is their naan bread. Service is also friendly and quick.
Sue Hardie
Good value for money and good quality curries. Restaurant is unlicensed so you can take your own drinks, which is a bonus if you're on a tight budget.
Ben Van Der Walt
Best curry I've had In Joburg. Friendly staff who remember their regulars and no booze licence with no corkage so bring all you want. Must try the stuffed paratha.
David 'Dvd' Kumi
I had the chicken makhne with naan bread. The chicken makhne was delightful and they were generous with the portions. But the foil with the naan bread had a fly in it.
Janine Taylor
Amazing Indian cuisine! Portions are generous and the food tastes extremely yummy and authentically Indian. Nice ambience inside. Quite romantic. Very nice place overall.

Went through for a quick bite to eat after a recommendation from my girlfriend. It was quite busy for a quiet little shopping centre which I think was a good sign from the start.

The restaurant is pretty small, with minimal decor and fittings, but does the job well enough. It's very relaxed and feels more like takeaway than an eat-in.

We decided to eat at the restaurant. The service was fantastic, being assisted by two very attentive gentlemen. I was pleasantly surprised that they had quite an extensive menu. We were given poppadums with dips to nibble on while we decided on what to order. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala which I had with masala tea and my girlfriend had the Chicken Korma - both medium hotness, with a garlic naan to share. The food arrived pretty quickly in the customary little metal bowls, along with freshly made sambals. The portions were generous and the flavour from both dishes really impressed. I'm not a huge fan of Korma, but enjoyed the bit I tried which wasn't just the usual creamy drabness some curry spots sometimes serve in Joburg.

I will definitely be back to try more of their dishes - I'm just disappointed I haven't gone there sooner!

Situated in Ferndale Village, Curry Palace is a little Punjab restaurant serving up various indian dishes. We ordered mutton bunnies and were really glad that customers had a choice between a mild or hot curry. The service is great and they are very attentive. I will definitely be visiting more often. You can opt to sit in or take - away but if you would like a take away option for a sit in meal, they will accommodate you.
Anna-Marie Marks
I really enjoy this place. I don't eat very hot curry, so I enjoy their mild options. The meat in curry is always soft & juicy. The flavours are good. Location and internal set up is nothing to write home about, so I often prefer to phone in order and collect. Staff are friendly. Their Sunday buffet is value for money, but prefer ala carte orders.
Toni Jo Brodie
The curry palace is a regular treat for our family. The staff are friendly and always go out of their way to make it a good experience. The food is unbelievably good and their Korma is unbeatable in my opinion! Top choice for Indian food :-)

Easily the best North Indian joint in town. Don't leave without trying the mixed tandoori platter, chicken makhnie or the huge, incredible buttered naans.

The only drawback here is the location: looking out over a car park does not make for the most romantic setting. The friendly service and great food makes up for that though and in a pinch just order takeout.
Celeste Naude
We have never eaten dinner sitting down at Curry Palace but we order take aways from here at least twice a month. Their food is always deliciously amazing and I often envy the patrons sipping on large goblets of red wine in the warm and ambient restaurant seating area. They deserve a 5 as they have never disappointed and service has always been great!

Don't be fooled by the the decor or appearance, this place serves quality curries. We had lamb biryani and butter chicken with naan and onion bhajiya as a starter. The portions were generous and the naan was the best I have had. Will definitely be back to try another dish
Wilma
Unpretentious, good value for money. Fast and friendly service. We had the platter for 4 as a starter, highly recommended if you like to try a bit of everything. No corkage is a bonus...

Popped by on New Years eve as our options were limited. But we were far from disappointed. I had the lamb biryani and my friend the lamb dhal gosht. Absolutely delicious. We both had it hot and expected the usual disappoint but they were both fiery. The meat was tender and both dishes flavorful. The curry came with complimentary rice that cant be swopped for anything else. For dessert we had the icecream which was over powered by coconut. The place seems to be a local favorite and there were a number of bookings. Definitely worth visiting for good quality north indian food.

Always have fantastic food at the Curry Palace, authentic Indian food! Great service... No corkage, and they encourage you to bring your own drinks.

We forgot to bring alcohol the last time, and they had a couple castle lights in the fridge that a customer had forgotten there and they gave me a couple on the house!

Love it.. And great value for money!! And portion sizes are great...
Inish Merchant
The finest curry place in town. The naan bread is crisp and fresh. The curry taste is authentic and can be compared to some of the best curries served in India. The service is warm, courteous and helpful. For my indian brothers, this is most likely the home away from home!
At my special request which was happily fulfilled ( even though it wasn't on the menu) the "paneer tikka" was a decent 3.0
P:S: If your lucky enough to stubble there on Eid, you're in for a treat!
Candice Gerber
Probably the best curry place in town. First visit to this place and we were not disappointed, everything that was put in front of us was devoured and enjoyed. Can't wait to go back.

I ordered a takeaway Lamb jal freejie last night from The Curry palace, Very disappointing. I only ate small portion of it before throwing it away. The meat was so tough, and felt like it had been boiled. The sauce was watery bland. Absolute waste of money, and wont be going back.
Lebogang Senne
Misled by the great review score for this place I decided to give it a try. Never to be repeated. The meal I got was watery and lacked flavour....
Sarashni Nkonyane
Pity there is no way to say zero rating!! Food was disgusting. All chicken dishes comprised of dry chopped up chicken breast in tasteless thick broth. For those who want soup with meat - not curry!! Barely any spice (and I don't mean chillies, I mean all the varied spices that make up curry) are missing. No herbs or aromatics whatsoever and when I wanted to return my disgusting curry I was told I couldn't. My husband's mutton dhall gohst was no better.
Roslyn Hellström
Prices are excellent! The platters are a great way to start a meal especially if you are hungry. The tikka chicken and potato samosas were delicious. The lamb kebab is a bit different as it resembles a sausage. The chicken tikka masala is well spiced and vibrant in colour. The lamb korma is sweet and tender. All curry sauces are full of developed flavours and certainly don't lack depth. One naan bread is definitely big enough for 2.

Great dinner outing or for a casual take away for a cool night! Always consistent, good quality, well priced food. And the staff are always friendly!
Thembani Biyam
I passed through this place craving a bunny chow. Unfortunately, this is not somewhere I would sit in and eat. It's very dark inside and doesn't have a friendly, inviting atmosphere. Then again, it looks more suited to take-aways than sit-ins.

Service was pleasant. I ordered a mutton bunny chow and the price was reasonable. The bunny chow itself was nice. I believe they could have added more meat but the size of the whole was more than I anticipated. The flavours seemed normal, nothing special, but overall I enjoyed the meal.

I would go back to try the chicken bunny chow. Hopefully, it's tastier.

Who's menu is attached to this link. .... This is the best curry in Jhb but Zamato have made it extremely difficult to order from them using this app.

This is my local Indian/Punjabi restaurant. I'm treated like Norm from Cheers fame, in the way that I am always greeted by name :-)

I mainly get their takeaways but I have also had many sit down meals. The food quality which is great is also very consistent. Their vegetarian selection is great and so is their chicken and fish dishes :-)

The food is good and the service great. It has been at Ferndale for many years and hope that it continues for many more!

I love indian food and am very fussy when it comes to it. I have to say, I love this place's food. It is very well spiced and flavored and the garlic naan is fantastic. Some restaurants either give all sauce and no protein or vice versa but this place gives just the right amount of each. Definitely well priced too. The size of the restaurant also gives it an intimacy that transports you to India. I love it.
Gergana Young
The best Indian food you can get in Jo'burg. The portions are really big, and the naan bread is amazing. The take aways service is pretty good too.
Kate Parker
Really not a fan of this place as of late. The dishes all taste the same and look like they're all made from the same sauce, just coloured differently. The chicken was also extremely dry and I didn't really enjoy anything about the food. I've been to far better Indian restaurants in Joburg so I'm not sure why everyone is raving about this place, its far below average and I wouldn't waste my money going back. Its also extremely expensive for substandard food.

Had an amazing experience here. This restaurant is tucked away in a shopping centre ( Fern Village) in Ferndale , but will definitely catch your eye when you walk past. You will want to go inside and see.

Nicely decorated and has great ambiance. The service is fast and competent. I think it's family run so everything has that personal touch thing going. The name of the restaurant doesn't suit its setting.

The food was amazing. The first bits, bread basket and accompaniments weren't great. I gave those a miss. Main meals stole the show. My chicken korma was wonderful and so was the rice. I was scared to ask for hot and opted for mild, just to be safe but next time I'll go for hot. We also ordered sweet naan bread. Amazing stuff, I could live on that bread.

Would love to try out absolutely everything on their menu. What I've had was great.
Garth Balabanoff
This is my FAVORITE curry place! It really is "the curry palace". The three gentlemen that run this store are just great and are only to happy to make you're experiecnce a memorable one. Do note that the table decor is simple and old fashioned but its just great and give's it a nice "authentic feel".

Food orders typically take about 10 minutes to arrive and are all served hot on warm plates.

Top Dish: Chicken Tikka Masala & Dhal Mahknie (SP) accompanied with a sesame seed naan - Oh.My.Word

Oh and GREAT for take-outs!

MMMM Mm :)

Tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurants are almost always fun, regardless of the service, the food, or the ambiance. There's something so novel and unique about finding a tiny little wedge of floor space between a beauty salon and a mall bathroom that always makes a dining experience that much more enjoyable. Don't get me wrong - I love a beautiful, elegant dining experience as much as the next person, but on a lazy Tuesday night, popping in to your local curry place and sitting at a dingy table for a great curry can't be beat.

And that's the essence of The Curry Place. Unassuming. Unpretentious. Great food. A tiny little spot in the otherwise pedestrian Ferndale Village shopping centre, it'd be easy to miss, if it wasn't for the veritable slew of people coming in to collect take-outs. We opted to sit down and sample the ambiance (limited) and the service (at times, uncomfortably polite) and enjoy the food (absurdly delicious) and the wine (surprisingly cheap).

Starters included delightfully crunchy Pakoda and fat, thick samoosas, as well as a sizeable portion of paneer. It was quickly dispatched before we moved on to the main attraction - the delicious, flavourful curry.

The Curry Palace keeps true to its namesake - the curry here really is fit for royalty. It's fragrant, sharp and delicious, with bold, strong tastes. The chicken korma is especially good, and when complemented with one of the beautiful, full-sized garlic naans (which is practically a feast in its own right) you've reached curry nirvana. Seriously though, order the naan - it's phenomenal.

If you're in the area and in the market for a good curry at a good price, The Curry Palace delivers in spades. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a tiny mall restaurant, but the food - oh the food! You'll be hard pressed to find a much better curry in Joburg.
Arjun Sinha
Pretty disappointing to be honest, the food was not authentic and can be best described as an average south african indian takeaway. We ordered the mince samoosas (good), butter naan (good), chicken mahknie and palak paneer (my staple dishes to rate many indian restaurants). The chicken mahknie and palak paneer literally looked like the same dish but one was green and the other bright orange...Looks like they use the same base curry but add a few things here and there to make it different. That to me is a big let down...the makhnie was too sweet, lacked any texture or flavor - the chicken pieces seemed like they were taken off the tandoor and dropped in last minute. The palak paneer was bland, had too much cream, no texture and no flavor - big let down for such a staple indian dish.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, after all my indian food experience stems from being born and having lived in India. There are a few indian restaurants in joburg that can deliver authentic flavors but unfortunately this is not one.

The owners are inviting and friendly, nice cosy place and service was quick - pity their food is not up to par.

The Curry Palace has spoilt most Indian restaurants for me...their chicken korma, naan bread and samosas are just sooooo good, that other places just cannot compete in my mind. We've been going to this restaurant for years now. The staff are the owners of the restaurant - a family run business (whose cousins, btw, opened the Bombay palace in Olivedale, which is just as good). They are always very friendly and eager to please. I always have the chicken korma - very unadventurous, I know but it is too yummy (in particular I would be quite happy getting the korma sauce with some of the delicious naan bread :)). They happily cater for whatever spice-level you require (from extra mild for people like me to Indian hot). The restaurant is small and unassuming, easily missed in the centre, but it adds to the feel. They do takeaways as well if so desired. All in all, one of the best Indian curries places in Johannesburg and we will happily continue visiting :)
Sonja Offwood
If I go back to a restaurant more than 3 times, then it is without a doubt a winner. The Curry Palace is one of those. I have to admit that I am not one for spicy food, so I stick to the mild's and generally the kormas, which are amazing, however we have taken plenty of visitors to the Curry Palace, and everyone has loved their food. Their Naan Bread is so incredible, I would go there just to order the Naan :). It is not commercialised in that it still feels like you are going to a little neighbourhood Indian restaurant, which adds such a genuine and authentic feel. So great - in fact I will be going there again tonight.
Gary Greenberg
I visited this restaurant about two months ago with a friend and I was happy with the meal. I wouldn't rate it the best curry in the country but it is most certainly the best in the area. The meals are well spiced and the flavours of their curries are not too rich. This restaurant does serve authentic cusine. They have a wide variety of meals for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Their staff are friendly and their service is better than expected. When ordering a meals I would recommend you try their naan bread and share it as it is pretty large.
Martin Lamberti
The Curry Palace is one of those gems of a restaurant that looks so simple from the outside, yet is pure treasure on the inside.

The ambiance is incredibly relaxed, with very simple furnishings and decorations, but the food that comes out of the kitchen is something really special. There are a wide range of Indian dishes to choose from, all of which I have tasted have been amazing. I would highly recommend the the Lamb Bhuna Ghost. The dishes are such that they cater perfectly for those who don't enjoy hot food to those who love it.
If it's Indian that you want, it's a great place to go for a romantic dinner, or to catch up with friends and family.
