Review 33 High Street - Johannesburg

Very nice. First time we've been there. Food was beautiful and very tasty. I had calamari and couscous salad and hubby had pork belly something starter and also calamari. The venue itself is very beautiful. Nice in the open air. There was a guy who did live entertainment . Lekker vibe. Also nice play area for the kids. My strawberry lemon meringue cheesecake millshake was delicious

Great choices. Pizza are outstanding and huge.. and the 4 lamb chops were well grilled with lovely wedges. On a Sunday it is very crowded so expect to wait. The service is very good and friendly. They work hard.

Very good resturant. Ambiance excellent. Having dinner on lam light under the trees was a beautiful evening spent. Have a few options of craft beers

This was one of the best experience I have ever had in Johannesburg. Great sitting Sep up and massive yard for kids to play while you are watching them. Great and massive selection on beer to chose from if you do enjoy beers, huge selection of cocktails too. The food is amazing with massive selection and you will be spoiled of choices. If ever your in Edenvale please check out this place and you will not be disappointed for sure.

Great food, atmosphere and setting. Their in-house selection of craft beers is great. They offer you free tasting of their beers which helps you to chose your favourite.
Pravesh Parsad
Lovely setting outside under the tree where u can easily loose track of time. Excellent variety of food that all taste great!
Stefan Du Plessis
Great vibe. Food good, always issues with the service though. If it wasn't for the out door experience a 2 star would have been in order
Kimi Van Dyk
Yummy pizzas! Nice atmosphere and lovely outside tables. Other food looks great too!
Carola Trummer
Beautiful place to unwind, great variety of dishes, cappuccino was excellent. Friendly staff. Enough parking. Kiddies play area. Lots of natural shade from trees especially on hot african days. Overall worthwhile to visit.

What a hidden gem in Modderfontein areašŸ˜šŸ˜The atmosphere is very lovely, a great place to chill for a weekend. I loved it. I will still choose this place over and over. If you love cool outdoor vibes, this is a the place. Also friendly team, efficient service. The owner is amazing!

Stunning vibe great food! Enjoyed it very much xxx

Prompt service and friendly team. Delicious, quality food. Great portions. Great menu with a variety of options. Awesome vibe. Caters for smokers and non smokers alike. (As a smoker I appreciate this). Will definitely visit again and again and tell everyone about it.

Food is great, service not so much. Eaten here about 5 times. Food is always great. Service lacking generally

Really fantastic loved it will take my entire family there

A very good restaurant to visit to enjoy their high variety of food very well prepared at very low prices. The outside seats are so relaxing.A must for the food lovers to visit.

Wonderful outdoor restaurant! Warm weather is a must because it would be a crime to sit anywhere but outside here! The food is great, the drinks are heaven and the vibe is immaculate! Almost 3 years ago, I went here on a first date with a guy I met on a dating app and to this day, we're still happy and in love. Part of me believes there's some kind of magic at this place that had something to do with it lol! Only complaint is that there were a lot of flies that day but that's not really the restaurant's fault :) that's just nature for you
Renee Erasmus
Lots of space in the nature reserve, there is enjoyable entertainment around and the Historic village was ideal for the Bachelorette party that was held at the village.
Sean Drury
Really lovely place for breakfast, brunch and Lunch! They have extremely good food and the vibe is just great. Itā€™s pet friendly so your four legged friends are also welcome!
Ross Butt
Over priced for VERY average food and the venue needs a good scrub. There was a packet with used tampons lying next to the loo. Why no bin? Clearly the owners have lost all interest.

Only saving grace was our waiter, Chris. He was excellent and deserves to work at a better venue.
This is a beautiful venue with lots of potential, but wonā€™t go back. Food is ridiculously overpriced, and not very good. I ordered a cheese and pulled pork bubble pizza, at R135, pork was sour and pizza was quite bland. Hubby had the chicken prego at a whopping R100, which was very dry and bland as well. Service is shocking, very slow and waiter continuously forgot to bring ordered items. Live music was also forgettable, the live act showed about as much enthusiasm as our waiter.
Kelly Rodger
Awesome venue and atmosphere, such a chilled vibe and lots of outdoor /undercover seating. Make sure you book first as its always busy. Cool little shed with some craft beers. Bubble pizza is the BOMB!!
Zee
I ordered the pepper sauce burger - not as much sauce as Iā€™d like but the burger was great. Had a few drinks too, pricey cocktails and drinks but I enjoyed it. Great venue - beautiful outdoors seating
Rustic_chivalry
Not a bad spot to hook up with the mafiosi and plot your next nappy party. Service is a bit of a shocker but it's becoming the norm in good Ć³l sEFF EFFrika. Food isn't too bad. They call pizza's - bubble breads - which nobody really knows what a bubble bread is so you can't really complain as they will just say - dats wot its supposed to be lyk. Good place to go drown your sorrows on a Sunday before the impending doom of work on Monday. Band is pretty good too and seems to improve the more I drink....a bit like my girlfriends looks I suppose.

I have been to this place twice. The food, not so nice. I loved their in-house chili. Last time I went, they didnā€™t have it and it made their food better. The servers were not attentive in both occasions and the tables we set at (outside) were very sticky. Just love the outdoor setting about the place. But there is nothing special about it.
Trevez Mcfc Jacobs
Awesome place this, always seems to have a nice vibe, Iā€™m yet to visit there whilst a live band is there, should be cool, regarding the food, If Iā€™m honest, itā€™s some what a little inconsistent, Iā€™ve had good food there, cold food, average food, still a really cool place tho.
Ornella Scarpellini
Wonderful place set in picturesque Modderfontien. Amazing vibe no matter when you go there. Place is always packed! Their bubble bread is definitely a must! I cannot get enough of it!

As a fan of 33 High Street it is extremely disappointing for me to write this review. This evening our waiter looked annoyed at looking after us from the get go when we have been nothing but friendly to him. My partner and I have just finished dinner here and moved to another table as the flies and bugs were driving us crazy. After telling the group of waiters sitting at the entrance to tell our. waiter that we have moved, we watched our waiter walk to our table, clear it and didnā€™t even make an effort to look for us and get us to pay our bill. 15 Minutes later and no contact has been made. Great location, good food, pathetic service.
Adine Schutte
The waiter was very helpful and apologetic due to the over crowded space. The food has always been terrify, but I will most definitely not be coming back as the food the last 2 visits were below standard and the fact that there is no smoking section is also a problem
Mbali Malindisa
The vibe is amazing. Good service. And the food is amazing. We had burgers and oh boy was it good. And the portions are massive. Its a must try.

I went to 33 High Street with friends over the weekend and enjoyed it.

It is really beautiful to sit outside under the trees, however, even though this place is in such a beautiful location and has so much potential, it seems to just lack any extra effort. The outside tables are quite uncomfortable and the service is below average.

All of the food we ordered was generally good (bubble bread pizza, burgers, sirloin steak and fish), however, the prego roll was terrible, it was so dry and served with no sauce. For a restaurant with a strong Portuguese influence i was shocked at how bad this meal was.

This place is however worth a visit if you are in the area and feel like a nice outdoorsy lunch.
Anthea Chittenden
Braving a winter afternoon for a birthday lunch. We were a large party of 30. Gerald and Thabo took fantastic care with all orders coming out in order and not one mistake! Large portions, awesome value, varied menu, stunning enormous Oak tress , outside kids jungle gym area, all make for a great family spot. A live one man band performs over the weekend. A large screen under a marquee is also an option if a sports fan. A good option if wanting an outdoor quaint setting.
Carina Hartman
Highly disappointed, the spaghetti bolognese arrived looking dry and unappetizing. The bolognese was the furthest thing from a bolognese, when we asked the manager why there was cinnamon in the bolognese sauce she told us it was their version of bolognese and as a Mediterranean restaurant pasta was not their specialty. All fair but then please donā€™t put on your menu that it is a bolognese. The manager also came across as condescending.

We have been visiting 33 High st for some years now on an off and every time we feel that the service just keeps getting worse. We are drawn to the venue due to its location and outdoor seating area and the kiddies area and the good craft beer. However, it has unfortunately got to a point where all the benefits of the venue is dampened by the poor service and average food. We were there over a public holiday and it was very busy. One gets the feeling that the waiters are simply overwhelmed and poorly trained. The food is average at best and feels mass produced. We had a big table +- 20 ppl and our food came out at different times which was frustrating especially with kids who want to eat quickly. Also, the food takes about 25-30 min to come out and we received the incorrect order on 3 orders which meant the people that were affected had to wait even longer for their order to be corrected. Also, when the bill came they included the incorrect orders on the bill plus the replaced food and there were drinks on the bill that we never ordered. Finally, our 9 year old daughter (who had the ribs) was up the entire night vomiting which one can only hope was due to a 24 hour bug, but its hard not to think that it may have been from the food given the current state affairs and the general feeling of disorganisation. Very frustrating and stressful and not an experience that we will want to repeat. Sorry guys my vote is no.

We could not wait to visit this establishment, but what a disappointment! Unless you enjoy the beerhall-like atmosphere outside, the place inside has the ambience of a hospital ward. No decor at all to break the bland white walls and nothing to build on the beautiful old house. Even the view towards the sunset has been obscured by the roof of the makeshift beer hall. My sirloin steak was tough and mediocre as were the veggies and the pepper sauce. We will, sadly, not be back.
Jaclyn Rahme
Such a disappointing experience! We ordered a Greek salad and a burger. The feta of the salad was off and the burger roll was drenched in margarine. I think the worst part about it was when we spoke to the manager/owner to explain the issue we got told in a very nice way that we were wrong with zero resolution or gesture to try and make the situation right! Definitely wonā€™t be back!
Tammy Hancox
Not great cocktails sadly.... The food however, is delicious and a great vibe to the place!!! Service is okay. Just a heads up, if you order from the separate kitchens, you get food at separate times.... Overall, worth a visit. We'll be back.
Benoit Le Roy
Very poor craft beers and pseudo burger that Wimpy sawdust comes to mind. Won't be back as the decline is clear now. Garnish over powers the food unpleasantly.

We were looking forward to a great day out, enjoying the music and sitting out under the trees. The service was erratic on what was not a very busy lunch hour (many empty tables outside). The wine we ordered was not available and neither was our second choice. So we asked for our third choice to be given to us at the price of the 1st or 2nd which the manager refused to do. They would also not allow us to go and buy wine of our choice and wanted us to spend on average R80 more for the choices that remained on the menu. What a poor show!! The bill for 4 of us was R1800.00 nonetheless.Ā We will not be returning..........

We had a lovely evening. Great relaxing atmosphere under the oak trees. Service was excellent. They also helped with our special requests for a birthday. Food was amazing. Great variety as well as interesting drinks. The coffee and beer brewery is also an added bonus! Nice view of the city lights in the distance.
Sabrina Kennedy
One of my new favorites. The pizzas are delicious, some of the best Iā€™ve ever had, and the scenery under the trees with the old style house in the background is amazing for a lunch
Melissa Do Couto
I went here recently for a birthday party. The bubblebreads were delicious and service was great considering how big of a crowd we were. Fantastic outdoor, laid back atmosphere. The burger looked more impressive than it was, the patty tasted processed. But the desserts were delicious. I would recommend it to anyone in the greenstone area looking for a relaxed Sunday lunch.
Sasha De Oliveira
Perfect for a brunch or lunch! Sit outdoors under a huge tree and enjoy the sun and a breeze. Great food and great friendly service. Their pizzas (bubblebread) are really tasty-thin and crispy bases. Had the chicken mayo one on my last visit, it was just a bit too oily with the mayo and cheese :( had to dab some of the oil off with serviettes, but it was still tasty. Won't go for a mayo topping next time. Also tried a steak, very good and cooked exactly to order!

This is definitely one of my favorite outdoor restaurants and the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday lunch under the trees. I've had their famous bubblebreads a few times and definitely can't go wrong with them, but tried their hake&chips on my most recent visit and thoroughly enjoyed it too. My friends had their burgers and pastas and were equally impressed.
Stella Novak
Great outdoorsy spot with live music. Extensive menu. Had the 'bubble bread' which are there version of pizza. Not bad but a bit scan on the toppings. Drinks are pricey but you will have a great time on a warm summers day/night...
Janel
I love this place, it's one of my favorites in my area.
When I want a chilled, tasty, sunny outing with amazing live music and food I come here. It's a good place for big group outing.
They are very famous for their bubblebread, own version of pizza. It's light, airy and tasty. I only order bubblebread and beer here, best.
Live music is so good, both singers have amazing voices. Service is always good, can be slow if they're very busy, but it's understandable. You have to book, they're always full.
When I go there I feel like I'm picnicking, but my picnic basket wasn't prepared by me šŸ˜‚
This is definitely a place to come and enjoy the beautiful nature and weather, as it's situated in the nature reserve. Sit under a huge oak tree and reconnect with nature.
Michelle Smit
Love the atmosphere! Great lunch under the oak trees with live music. Can seat a lot of people so it is great if you want to have a large group. He bubble bread and burgers are heavenly!!! Craft beer and cocktails galore

Came through to 33 high street after a walk through the fantastic modderfontein market. Disclaimer: the owner lives in the same street as my mom so I've tried to be impartial

The restaurant has a real South Africa family pub feel to it. Exceptionally casual with wooden benches and a relaxed atmosphere. So don't expect expensive cutlery and crockery, but rather run of the mill, as it doesn't fit with the style. They also have their own craft beer brewery on site which is apparently awesome.

The food was surprisingly good. I had the rabbit stew and my mom the fish and chips. Very very tasty although just be careful of bones in the rabbit. Our service was also excellent with the owner coming by our table (as expected)

Recommend to anyone and everyone!

It was my first time visiting this place on Saturday thanks to a friend. The venue itself is incredible and so relaxing as we sat outside. It almost felt like we were miles away from the busy city. I really enjoyed my breakfast, it was of high standard and a very generous portion. The service was great too , our waiter Thabo was quite attentive . I'll definitely be going back to try out more than just the breakfast menu.
Alexa Scola
We had the bubblebread (their version of a pizza) as well as the burgers. The pizza was definitely better than the burgers which were extremely bulky and not so tasty.

I would definitely recommend this spot for a Saturday or Sunday lunch, with good friends. You can sit under a massive oak tree while listening to the live music.
Krinisha Kara
Great food spot and situated in such a stunning setting. For those that love the outdoors, for meeting big groups of friends, for simple dishes that are heightened. Quite pricey especially the curries. Love that the brewery is there. Service is a little slow.
Kenneth Barnard
Amazing food, beautiful beer, but the most rude and un delightful service I've ever had, would rather go to McDonald's and sit in a queue for a hour. Been here three times, and it will be the last.
Clare Appleyard
Spent a quite delightful hour here on a Sunday afternoon. Our plan had been to only have a beer, but the place was packed and after staff kindly found us a table we felt obliged to eat.
Oakes Brewery with local brewmaster Happy will allow you to sample the ales on tap to find one that you like. To eat we ordered the delicious looking bubble bread with pulled pork and JalapeƱo chutney. It was more than enough to share to fill the gap and was very tasty. The dough was crispy and bubbly (hence the name) and the topping was generous. Service was decent for the number of people there and being able to sit out under giant oak trees on a balmy afternoon is nothing short of enjoyable.
Definitely a return trip on the cards.

33 on High has a lovely outside area! On a sunny morning it's very pleasant. I had a Mozzarella, cheddar, jalapeƱo and pulled pork pizza. It was big and delicious! The pizza crust is thin and crispy, a real winner! Other meals we had were eggs Benedict (Mom described it as divine! Eggs were good), a hangover omelette (the uncle says "lekker!"), French toast (very yummy according to my little cousin) and bolognaise toast (aunts said it was good)! I also had a very creamy Spicy Chai Latte! Over all a great place!
Philile Mabolloane
Great food but such poor poor service! What a wow. We only stayed because we were actually starving but I really expected better. At some point I even ordered a drink that never came. I was really disappointed in the service here.
Taralyn Moodley
I like the vibe of this establishment quite a bit. I went there for a quick coffee with a friend and we both ended up having the crushes. I had strawberry and ginger and my friend had ginger. They were refreshing and delicious. Staff and vibe are lovely too.
Samantha Tame Whittaker
A great, outdoors, Portuguese lunch experience.
If you're looking for a lovely setting under two beautiful oak trees and some relaxing quality time this is a pretty good gem - found on my sisters recommendation. You will find authentic in flavor Portuguese style food and I was very envious of those having the the bubble bread (pizza style) dishes. We had the Prego Trinchado which was one of the best I've had, bursting with flavor. The peri-peri chicken was oh-so perfect in every way, and so was the lemon chicken espetada.
A lovely summer outing for the family / with friends.
Kara Montgomery
Fantastic food and atmosphere sitting under the two beautiful oak trees with live music playing in the background and a craft brewery on the property. Definitely my favourite happy place! The service is unfortunately always frustratingly slow though which I have mentioned to the staff with no change over the past 2 years. I have been to this restaurant many times and I will keep going regardless of the service issue.

A real gem of a restaurant and pub atmosphere on high street closely situated from a South African heritage site which goes back over 100 years. The old dynamite factory and Franz Hoenig Haus provide a nice backdrop to the Dutch styled architecture.

The menu has a really good selection of tapas, burgers, seafood, pasta, etc for a pub styled restaurant which is a pleasant surprise. Also a great selection of ice cold frosties and craft selection makes for a nice barn yard/market styled ambiance.

My rating however comes through from the pathetic customer service I experienced on my first occasion visiting the establishment. I have never in all my dining experiences ordered a drink and it comes 2.5hrs later after probably asking for it just under 10 times. I would furiously rate this place a negative 10 based on inattentive and a lack of customer service ability from your waiters. It's simply not acceptable but the reason I stayed at the place is because I was attending a Xmas function. I understand that one would expect waiting for meals, etc for an acceptable period but for a simple drink I believe is out right ludicrous.
Knowing this I just ordered the crumbed calamari starter which was surprisingly good and turnaround time for serving this meal was acceptable. Note I still did not receive my drink until I was half way through my meal and all I wanted was a Coke Zero.

My experience was shocking and I believe management and owners of this establishment should be embarrassed with this rating. I will definitely not be attending an establishment like this nor would I recommend it for a quick company team gathering. It's simply embarrassing to clients and patrons.
Nicole Pereira
Overall 33 high is a really good restaurant, food is very good, prices are reasonable and the vibe is very nice but the service is terrible. They definitely need to look into hiring more waiters as people generally go there in large groups and there just never seem to be enough waiters around, be prepared to wait for hours for your food on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
Jean-Marc Masson
Oh wow. What a wonderful experience! This is the country away from the city venue for sure. Home brewed coffee is excellent, the bubble bread pizza is out of this world and the burgers are very tasty. Definitely the place to come with family or just the two of you. My wife and I really had fun. We came one a fully booked Sunday and they made a way to accommodate us. Our burgers were out in no time. Service was very professional and curious.
Next time we'll make a day of it and visit their beer and coffee brewery as well.
Don't miss this one! Big thumbs up!
Dana Booth
Lovely to sit outside under the trees. Very relaxed and casual, but with good, fresh food.
Unfortunately there was no electricity when I went, but our waiter informed us of this before we sat down and explained exactly what we could and could not order from the menu. I can recommend the poached eggs on corncakes. Would like to go back to try more lunch style food, but for a chilled breakfast it's a winner. Service isn't bad, and they didn't rush us to leave after we'd finished eating
Angie
Been here twice and both times were horrible. First time we went with friends to try the 'bubble pizza'. Something in it didn't agree with my husband and he got sick right away after eating 1 or 2 slices.

We thought to give the place another try and order something different...
The second time we went was close to closing time and a few of menu items were out of bounds, and we understood this, then made an order which they said could be done:

Rump steak
Meio trango Mozambicano

When the food arrived, we thought maybe we had been invited to a funeral, because my chicken was cremated! Burnt to a crisp, I mean the skin was literally charcoal flakes! Needless to say we asked the waiter nicely if there was anything that could be done.
A few minutes later, the manageress/owner came out to inform us that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the chicken & that it was acceptable. She also mentioned that our selection wasn't able to be made at the time of night, and argued with us about the ovens etc... When we asked if she would pay for that exact meal and explained everything, she left and had a new one made - which had to be put in a take-away and eaten at home as they were closing.
We felt as though we were treated like dodgy criminals looking for a freebie! These meals are expensive and we paid & even left a nice tip for the waiter who has to work in those conditions.

I can understand and sympathize with the staff & operating times, but they should've just been upfront with us from the beginning and said they could only do light meals or desserts, etc...
The one thing I'll say is that the food we did get to eat at home was actually good, but we still wouldn't go back.
Andries Christine Van Staden
It's like a house with rooms. Went there in the winter. It was a bit cold and bland. Not very good service. I am sure in the summer it will be a much better place to go to. Let's see , maybe
Lauras World
A Portuguese (Mediterranean) restaurant (under two Oak trees) with an on site brewery called Oakes Brew in the Modderfontein Historic Village.. What is not to love? All around us as we walked in, I could see people eating their famous "Bubble Bread" and wished that I hadn't eaten so much throughout the day.

So a few of us booked a table here for 5pm and ended up here after our yearly Diemersfontein Pinotage on Tap Festival on Saturday evening to watch the rugby. The storm of all storms was about to come down and we were very happy to pull up a chair in the buzzing pub, drink some beers, relax and just watch the game. Ā First, we tried their local stout (as so many people have raved about it), but sadly, it was very flat.. and after that, we stuck to Castle Lites.Ā

I have to be honest and say that on first inspection, I haven't given 33 High Street a fair investigation and due to the storm, decided against taking a walk around but our service was great and I made up my mind to return!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 2017:
I made up my mind to return during the day time on our next visit because I was so impressed on our last visit. And we made the trek on a Sunday recently.Ā

However, sadly the service was shocking! In fact, after ordering a STOUT beer, the waitress brought us a Weiss without explanation and just left it on the table. We had to get her attention again, call her back and when we pointed out the fact that it was not a Stout, she matter-of-factly stated that they were out of Stout beer. If I am paying for a beer, I at least require the effort of a waitress to come back to the table, explain the situation and offer me something else. However, just arriving with a completely different substitute, and leaving it on the table without explanation is the height of rudeness..

We got a Castle Lite (yet again), ate our "Bubble Bread" and left.Ā

*Recommendation: Definitely a restaurant venue that is probably better experienced during the day (and good weather), there are some great children's facilities -- however I was less than impressed by our service on this second visit.
Naomi De Carvalho
We rocked up on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed! It is a large venue so it was busy and had live entertainment. The food was fine but we were not really impressed with the beers offered by the microbrewery on site. We'll be back to try the bubble bread, it looks divine.
Russel Roth
Been here a few times and have always been impressed, especially their bubble bread , they use this as the pizza base which is outstanding , always generous toppings. Their feta bubble bread for starters is excellent , they serve all bubble bread options with a roller cutter to slice as you please. The chicken livers on toasted roll excellent , the fillet was done with a Pepper taste , excellent and the Peri Peri chicken seems to be done in the pizza oven has butter soft white meat . I would recommend highly
Cristina Marques De Oliveira
We had father's days lunch today, we booked and we're placed under the oak tree apart from the green bugs falling onto top of us and my food out of 10 people being forgotten!!!! We enjoyed our meal
Dog Food Man
Yummy, good flavours. It's our 2nd time here, the 1st time we had arrived a little late and the kitchen was closed so we had drinks. What I love about this place is that there is plenty to choose from on the menu. You will find something to eat. (We have fussy eaters in our family). The coffee is good. We had the trinchado, so tasty. I had their rabbit stew. Very yummy, just a lot of bones. My fiance had calamari and I believe it was cooked perfectly. For desert we had lemon meringue and their special waffle. The meringue was too sweet( I cud feel the grains on sugar in the meringue) which was a little unpleasant. I tasted the waffles, oooh, they are good. This particular waffle was filled with caramel chips in the centre. I love the live music, both times it never sounded like a karaoke and the volume was pleasant, not like a rock concert. I recommend coming to this destination point in Modderfontein. Try booking, they are a huge restaurant but they are always full on the weekend!
Food_Lover_5
Went all the way to your restaurant because a friend had been raving about you, but I was really disappointed. The food wasn't that great, service was slow and I had to ask the waiter five times just to get a coke...
Chantel
What a lovely relaxing venue. Please change your musician on a Sunday he really does no justice to your venue. The food is very good but if you order bubble bread which I highly recommend you do it comes out the kitchen 30 minutes before the other cooked food arrives! We understand that food could arrive a little staggered but 30 minutes is excessive. Half the table had finished eating by the time the cooked food arrived! The bubble bread is a must, indulge and try the waffles also very good!
Stefi
Great venue. Good service. An outdoor restaurant perfect for families with young children. However the food was average, I had the pizza. I would return though.
Carin
Absolutely incredible vibe and service. Pizzas are their most popular but I tried the calamari today. It was a bit too salty and the wedges were not cooked properly. One of the best venues.
Jacques Scholtz
Although we've been here before, we were somewhat disappointed this time around. Beautiful venue with an old house and spacious garden with a great view. Very relaxed with great potential. The only issues this time around was that my pricey eggs Benedict came with only one egg/bun. Toast had to be ordered extra. It made the meal seem a tad overpriced and a bit of an disappointment. Out of all the restaurants where we enjoy breakfast, only one other ever offered "half" a portion for the usual price. Secondly, although it is not totally their fault, we requested a menu with drinks and beers from the on-site craft brewery, and were informed that there is no such menu. The waiter was at least able to name some of the beers on offer, of which we ordered two and could not finish them as they were amazingly sour, seemed as if they were not fully fermented, and we did mention this to the brewery. Again, this brewery is independently owned, so it might not be perfectly fair to mention them, however they do form part of the experience as they are on site. We'll be back to test out the waters again, as the Piston Ring vintage car meetup occurs next door once a month, and this place has so much potential!

Went for a friend's birthday party last night, I'm not familiar with the area so I got horribly lost trying to find my way to this (what I presume) fairly new establishment.

We were seated outside on the benches, but from what I peeped when walking to the parking lot there is an inside sitting area and a bar. The vibe was extremely relaxed and it looks like a lovely spot to enjoy lunch and drinks.

I only managed to have a mojito and wasn't too impressed, I think the virgin cocktails that were ordered at our table confused the barman and everything was virgin. They did take it back and gave me a new one with alcohol in it but still the elusive perfect mojito still evades me. We had bubble bread all around the table for starters which was quite pleasant and I ordered a Jozi bubble bread for my main which comes with avo but when I got it there was no avo and was only told that after the fact instead of the point of order. The jozi was quite bland absolutely no seasoning and no salt or pepper was provided across the table. Nonetheless a few people seemed to enjoy their food and I'll definitely give this place a few more visits as their menu does look promising.

Came here for Friday dinner with a group of about 8 of us last week! we had reserved a table before however on arrival they couldn't find our booking. Luckily there was plenty of tables available and they seated us straight away.

The food was quite good and tasty!Ā The "Bubble bread" is awesome, when it arrived it literally comes completely puffed up like a bubble and sinks down to a normal pizza/foccacia once cut!! I also had the calamari tentacle starter as well as the trinchado, which were both tasty, however if you scared of garlic I wouldn't recommend the trinchado as it was packed with garlic. Lucky for me I love garlic and wasn't on a date so it was a win!

Their service is slightly on the slower end however and if you go for dinner I would suggest trying to sit inside as we literally couldn't even see our plates it was so dark! Maybe some fairy lights in the trees some how could also work.

Overall good food and a nice venue, This place is great for Sunday afternoon lunch with friends-and they have some great craft beer too.

We had dinner here last night and the food was great. I would just suggest 'cleaner' writing on the chalk boards, couldn't read some of the specials, and a wipe of the tables after customers have left. Waiters were not very visible. Overall a good experience. Would definitely return for the Fillet!

Had a leisurely Saturday lunch here with friends. Gorgeous venue for sitting outside under the trees during summer. Their pizzas or 'bubble breads' are very tasty. Rest of the menu is a bit pricey but the standards are good. Service is a bit on the slow side for Jhb but like I said if you're not in a rush it's well worth a visit. Great kids play area too.

Great food an friendly staff. Interesting menu. On the menu they warn that food is prepared in two different kitchens so it doesn't always come at the same time, which isn't bad if there is a difference of only a few minutes. Unfortunately 3 people got their bubble breads before they even started cooking the other meals so we all ate at different times which spoilt the experience

In recommendation we decided to quickly pop in. We've heard amazing things about their pizzas and craft beers.

The service so far is amazing and their beer goes down very well- especially their Ale.

I ordered- wait my wife ordered the bubble bread with 4 cheese- don't ask what it's called. Fml!!! That's amazing, the crust is perfectly this and the cheese is plentiful. My wife the Porchetta bubble bread with lamb- equally fantastic.

We heard bad things about this place but honestly we couldn't find anything wrong. Well done.

The life music makes this place a very cool hangout.

This is by far my favorite place to go to. Really chilled vibes. Go for beer and pizza after work or take friends and family for a treat! Best to go on a nice summers evening and sit under the trees. Would definitely recommend trying the pizzas (bubblebreAd) and the steaks are amazing. Great seafood options (little expenaive though) aswell! Keep up the good food!

Absolutely love the setting, food and staff at this place, but they should really look at new management. As the front of house, the manageress was an absolute disgrace and one of the rudest people I've had the displeasure of coming into contact with. From what I'm told is not the first time she's been complained about. Will gladly go back when she is not there.

I absolutely love this place!
The food is always great, they have a fantastic craft beer collection and the vibe is awesome!!
Sitting outside under the tread is great if it's a nice day!
Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner!!

This place has everything that could make this a fantastic eat out.... however the most important thing I look for is service and it just lacks it.... it also can't pull off functions as they struggle to provide a proficient split bill.... that being said great food and awesome atmosphere

This a really lovely place to go if you are looking for a great bite to eat. It is a relaxing and chilled atmosphere. I went on a Saturday afternoon and there was live music which was really nice. We had a focaccia to start which was fresh although a bit dry and could have been served with some butter. I had the beef prego for main and it was one of the best that I have had. It is served with thick potato wedges and was a decent portion. Their pizzas are really fantastic there. The only real complaint that I had was that the service was extremely slow and it took up to half an hour for us to be served and we all received our meals at different times. There were quite a few functions going on though so I do understand why it might have been so slow. The food is really tasty and fresh and the waiter said it takes time to prepare so not a place to go if you are looking for a quick bite to eat. A great place for families to go. Overall a good dining experience.

So first off arrived with an awesome atmosphere and high expectations... The food was tremendous and the drinks were delicious... But ... And the big but here the lack of service... Utterly slow and unapologetic... I do understand you have a few Christmas parties going on and it is a bit difficult to keep up but a 30 minute wait to get our order placed is a bit crazy... Everyone was thirsty and hungry... Would I come back? Perhaps but a repeat of that service and I certainly won't be... All and all good food as well as some sangria not too bad...

Being almost the end of the year our department decided to have a braai at 33 high Street hidden away in the upper class of modderfointien a great venue with live music and delicious cocktails and of the hook craft beer made on site for starters we had foccacia bread and really hot chilly sauce and I definitely tried all the craft beers available there are 4 on tap which was great after the terrible weather conditions for our mains we had braai chicken, steak and wors with salads and rolls as well as pap and grav@y for desert we had ice cream and chocolate sauce but the drinks continued to late in the afternoon perfect place to celebrate anything the only bad thing is that it took longer to get drinks as service was really slow I would definitely be there again a bit far but I'm sure my friends would enjoy a good day out their pizza's are really good with the wood burning fireplace which comes out perfect we really had a great time and I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have great beer and pizza

I've been wanting to visit Oakes Brew House since I had a glass of their American Pale Ale a couple of years ago. Oakes Brew House or 33 High Street is special for a few reasons, firstly and most importantly, Oakes is an all-girl brewery. Secondly, they also have their own roastery and their coffee blends can be bought on-site too. Lastly, Oakes is located in the historic and gorgeous Modderfontein High street. Just driving there feels like you have left the city behind and entered a quiant village. It is also super popular over weekends so make sure to book if you don't want to be disappointed.

We were lucky enough to get one of the tables below one of the giant oak trees which gives the brewery its name. While the menu offers somethings for everyone, we were especially excited about the "bubblebread", or pizza. Offering a unique range of toppings it's hard to pick one but we did.

We were not disappointed. They arrive, all bubbelicious on wooden planks, each with their own pizza-wheel.

We tasted some of the beers on tap and though unique they weren't as cold or refreshing as an ice cold castle light.

Some live music made the perfect back-drop to a relaxing afternoon spent underneath giant oak trees, drinking beer and eating great food.

For a delicious escape from the city, give Oakes a try, we'll definitely be back soon for some more bubblebread!

This was the venue for our department's year end lunch. I have very fond memories of the restaurant dating back a few years as we held our wedding reception here. I don't think people generally have high expectations of venues when it comes to year end functions, but the staff at 33 High Street excelled themselves. The restaurant was packed, but the service was impressive. Our food overall was excellent. Generous portions and well presented. The sauce with my calamari was a bit too salty for my taste and I am not crazy about the idea of a deconstructed salad on my plate. Three huge intact lettuce leaves and the other ingredients stacked alongside was a bit strange. I felt the leaves could at least have been served already torn or shredded. But apart from this, a great experience and we will be back soon.

Absolutely the best experience. Great setting. Amazing food. Delightful service. Great pricing.

Never disappoints. Happy as a pig in ... šŸ˜‚

One of the best places in Joburg for a lazy outdoor lunch. Tucked away in Modderfontain, this one is a true hidden gem. Good food, good beer (and other drinks), good vibe, good music and last but not the least very good service. If the sun is out 33 High Street is where you want to be.

This restaurant is situated in a quiet area which has an awesome chilled vibe. The food is really good. I have been here a few times and the service is good except the one time where it was actually quiet and the waiters messed up our orders and took forever to bring our drinks.

Great bubble, amazing craft beer and this all while sitting under huge trees. Weekends they have live entertainment. What more can one want.

Take me to Stellenbosch, Cape Town! No wait, if you want to go back there don't fly down, rather than head to Modderfontein and stop by 33 High Street, a beautiful place tucked away from the city designed in the old Cape Dutch Housing style architecture. The restaurant is a house/lodge turned into a place to eat fine home cooked style meals. It's filled with beautiful wooden tables outside under the big oak trees that provide the shade from the sun.

On offer to eat I was treated to a farm style breakfast, the usual bacon and eggs but this was more special as it felt like it was made from home. The same can be said about the wood baked pizzas made with real fresh baked dough. It was so soft and crispy but again, it felt like home cooked food which I love.

The service was a bit slack and the waiters should be more tighter around tables and serving people but otherwise they were fine.

If you're looking for delicious farm style/home good vibes then this is the place to be. You feel like you're in another city and the atmosphere takes you back to rest and relaxation. Do stop by, it's worth your while!

Lovely setting! Lovely 'bubble bread' - great menu and concepts. Service quite slow. Great food. Fair prices. Not many salad options. Pizza was delicious!

What an awesome chilled Sunday afternoon, great friends and awesome music!! Food was amazing, tasty generous portions, but the atmosphere is superb!! A definite return is on the cards!!

Great place for an afternoon lunch under the oak trees. It has certainly grown over the years but their food is still great, good service and a good atmosphere! Makes you feel like you are in the countryside!

This has to be my favourite spot to chill on a Sunday for lunch. An unmatched and gorgeous location, especially on a sunny day with live music. The menu reflected a barrage of choice and diversity. The highlight of my visit was the very innovative pizzas with the delectable bubble doughs. The craft beer selection was also impressive.

I love this place!!!! The vibe is relaxed and perfect for an afternoon get together with friends or family. The service is a bit slow sometimes but the food and cocktails definitely make up for that. I recommend 33 High Street to everyone that's looking for a chilled place with great food and an great atmosphere. #ZomatoTopStar #bliss #nomnomnom #favs

Their bubble bread which is a focaccia that comes to the table looking like a pillow is fantastic their pizza are thin crispy and delicious one of the best places to go to for wood fired pizzas! and their desserts are just as good! They also have an extensive menu if you don't feel like pizza. The park like venue is great for outdoor lunches, they also have Kraft beer and live music.

Such an awesome place. The service is fast and food is great. The prawn curry could have been a bit more spicy but the chicken livers and snails was out if this world. Next time I'll only have a few starters. The beer was great! Great for the family and a big group of friends.

The food was good but the service was not so fantastic also I placed an order to take bread home, the waiter forgot to order it and when he tried to place the order they didn't have stock.
Jenna-Leigh De Wit
Perfect for an outdoor lunch (limited indoor space) and the food is good, especially the bubble bread. It can be a bit pricy. Make sure to book your table in advance.

Amazing food and such a good environment. One of the best places I have been on a Sunday afternoon. Great big open garden, kids can run around and play. Live music, and fantastic home brewed beer. The blonde was my favorite. Their pizzas are one the best I have eaten in a long time

Sad to say my previous experience having lunch at 33 High Street was beyond disappointing. An absent waiter with almost zero communication skills, a Minty Lemonade Crush which was basically just blitzed up ice and mint with no hint of lemonade which left me ordering a Schweppes Lemonade to add to it. My complaint regarding the drink went through the waiters ear and out the other. We were told to order soon as the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. Our order of Beef Prego Roll and Plain Jane burger arrived close to 50 minutes later?? It also took another 40-45 minutes for our plates to be cleared and eventually we managed to get the bill. Not impressed by lack of service and long awaited food. I won't be going back unless something is done regarding training of staff and quality of food and drinks.

Old review- Superb restaurant! The vibe is incredible on the weekend, with live music and tables filled with people.Ā
There is an open are for children to run around and enjoy the day while the parents enjoy their divine food and drinks.Ā
The bubble bread (pizza) is highly recommended for anyone who is looking to indulge in a gourmet and filling pizza. All their food is incredibly tasty. Kitchen closes at 3 so be sure to get there early enough to take advantage of the kitchen. Once you've tasted your starter you'll want to keep the food coming!Ā
Highly recommended to a cool down lunch and drinks after a brisk walk in the Modderfontein reserve.Ā
They also cater for parties and group bookings.Ā
You can also test their home all-female brewed beer from Oaks.

Our last visit, about 2 years ago was less than memorable. Decided to take the folks on Saturday for breakfast. Service was fantastic and attentive. The new breakfast menu had many tempting options. The food was fabulous! Will definitely be back!!

A true gem in the middle of moderfontein! A Wonderful place to go watch the rugby at on a Saturday or Sunday Afternoon! They make the best "bubble bread" pizzas and have great Portuguese food! The service can be a bit slow at times, but it's worth the wait! They also have a cool craft beer brewery where you can do some tastings! A really fun thing to do on a sunny afternoon! They also have live music on the weekend which is really cool, and adds to a great atmosphere! There are not many places like this in Joburg!

We recently held an event at 33 High Street as it is one of our favorite restaurants, mainly because we are 5 minutes away, the vibe is great and the food is always excellent. Many of our friends have held their birthdays there and we opted to do the same.

Natalie Sher, the restaurant Liaison Manager was efficient, helpful and went above and beyond in hosting our 60 guests and coordinating the food/drink - bubble bread buffet was a winner and made everyone happy!

The reason for only awarding 4/5 is that at the end of the night, one of the staff members took it upon himself to steal the remaining cupcakes (which had been made by a friend), despite the fact that they were packaged and ready for us to take home.

Natalie assured us, on the night , that a disciplinary enquiry would be held and that the employee in question would be reprimanded. I sincerely hope that this will occur as restaurants cannot expect their patrons to feel welcome and safe when there is the potential for theft by the staff members.

I wish I could say that we won't go back to 33 High, but I know that isn't the case. One bad apple shouldn't spoilt the entire establishment and detract from the fact that the food is excellent.

I would highly recommend this establishment, just keep an eye out on your leftovers! šŸ˜‚

This is the second time in as many weeks that I've tried this restaurant, mainly because of the road works in the modderfontein area. After walking out after 45 minutes last week because the drinks hasn't arrived I gave it another chance. I wish I hadn't. The menu is limited at best and the prices are over the top. The food seems to be brought out as its ready. They clearly know this is a problem at the menu even has it printed in it that you shouldn't expect it to come together. They have 5 different frappe on their menu and couldnt make one and had to keep running off to check. On the plus side the chicken in the cous cous salad was nice but they clearly forgot to flavour the cous cous
Matthew
Great day out, the restaurant has a variety to offer. Great beers and pizza. My friends tried fillets, lasagne and various desserts all quite yummy. The Modderfontein mud slide is defiantly worth a try. They have live music on Saturday's which is a bonus.

Very lovely venue. I had booked a big table for my birthday and to watch the rugby with a few friends.

The service we received from Abigale and Thulani was impeccable but unfortunately the standard of food didn't seem to match the level of service.
I ordered the ribs and besides the large amount of basting sauce, the ribs were incredibly dry.
My girlfriend ordered the Beef Lasagne and it was inedible.
It was incredibly salty and we sent it back and she was not interested in ordering anything else.

It was an unfortunate experience.
I wouldn't suggest ordering anything other than the bubble bread. Anything else and you might be very disappointed.

Great restaurant, big trees, perfect for a summers day outside with a wonderful meal. Had my dads birthday here, we booked a private room, which fitted our family ;) great food and ambience

A birthday invite brought us to this lovely place that we have never been! And so glad that we have been shown!! Lol
This place is a gem!!!

Vibrant live music, a huge crowd makes a great vibe, craft beer tasting experience, awesome food, good service! Just want more!!

A huge selection of food and drinks on the menu.
We had a very tender and juicy beef espetada, full of flavor, it didn't need any sauce to go with it. Perfection accompanied by bell peppers and potato wedges.
And a "bubble bread" it's a rectangular pizza with generous topping. Delicious.

Definitely coming back for more!!
It's a place for all, family gathering, pets are allowed. Booking is advised.

Slightly disappointed the last time we were there. The prices of their prawns in particular is twice as much as similar restaurants in the area which i find unacceptable. What a shame as we liked going there.
