Review Prime Grill & Butchery - Johannesburg

The ribs!!!! Great steaks as well. The only concern is that it is too big and the overhead here might not see them survive too long as it's never full. Great food with great service though.

Lovely setting and great service from the waitress, however the food was really bad! Unfortunately the kitchen got all the basics wrong. Chicken liver starter still raw and then the free range steaks were cooked incorrectly and we could taste gas flame on the meat, the extra onion rings were stale and the fries cold. We expected more from a venue charging the prices they do.

My wife and I had the burger special which was fantastic, the menu variety was fantastic and exactly what I'd expect from a decent steak house of this calibre. The choice of steaks seemed great so we'll have to give that a bash and the sauce variety peaked my interest greatly. The drinks were a bit pricey but hey, ce la vie. I'd go back again. See you soon....

I was there yesterday... Excellent top service, most friendly staff and the food is just simply amazing. Thumbs up to Prime Grill

Worst meal I have ever had. Ordered 1 steak medium rare got well done. Got another one and it came back raw. Not impressed.

It was just OK for us. Heard the wait staff were excellent but ours was not incredible. Question was asked if the cape Malay curry was on the bone. Waiter said enthusiastically 'yes'. When he realized that's not what my friend wanted, he said 'but just little bones' as if to appease her. Turned out it was off the bone... My lamb shank could have been more tender. One side was coming off the bone, the other I had to pull the meat off. We've tried it and I will give it three stars, but won't be back for a while. There are just so many restaurants out there.

My Husband and i went for dinner at your restaurant last night at cedar square. We enjoyed the the atmosphere and the service was excellent, apart from my fries not arriving but i only realised that afterwards and was actually grateful. What let us down a bit was that the butter was frozen. I fully understand that you want to keep things fresh but i'd then rather not have that wonderful bread served. My husband loves fresh bread and commented that the rolls were especially good. For starters I had oysters, retrospectively ordering sea food is probably not the cleaverest thing to do at a steakhouse. Again they were slightly frozen. My husband had the liver pate and found it good, the onion and gerkin side however was too chunking to scoop up with the bread and pate. The main meal and desert we had was absolutely lovely. I enjoyed the butternut side but the menu describes it as roasted butternut and what we got was not roasted but mashed butternut. We enjoyed the evening but will think twice before going again.

The steaks are awesome, the ambience is welcoming, the host Gary Beardsley-Nel is always attentive and it's sooo conveniently close to home

Second to none! A lovely setup for a formal date, while able to allow for casual sundowners. Excellent private rooms!!!

Fantastic service and absolutely amazing food!! Deffinately our new best restaurant.

Great service and the food absolutely out of this world! Best lamb shank I've ever tasted

Pleasantly surprised! Excellent food and a chef that knows exactly how to cook your steak to the correct temperature.

Very very nice Place!!! Excellent Service by Princess! The food was very excellent, we come back!

Very average dinner last night! Waiter made too many schoolboy errors! Food good, but maybe on the expensive side! Venue is very nice, but lacking polish! Let's hope time improves service levels! PC Printed menus very poor?
Megan Compton
Food was delicious! Friendly atmosphere and good service. Can't go wrong!

Best ribs in town!!! Must try : Marrow bone, chicken livers and their beef strips pasta!
Robert Kroger
Try the crispy chicken livers! Fantastic.

One of my favorite pleases to eat

Have been here so many times and would still go back a hundred more. This was where I first had a ribeye steak and I haven't looked back. For the true steak fanatic, here is the place that keeps it real. Steaks made with salt and pepper and nothing in between. There are sauces available if you like but who would when the steak is amazing without it. My favourite side is the mashed potatoes. I haven't purchased from their butchery yet but I always enjoy browsing.

I went there on a date night with my boyfriend and we were pleasantly surprised at how good the service was, we had the best waiter. The food was incredible, it was one of the best steaks I've ever had, everything was of a high standard - will definitely be coming back!

Arrived for lunch yesterday & was pleasantly surprised. Lovely ambience. My husband ordered a T-Bone steak & spicy rice....was delicious. I had a fillet steak & Greek salad, very tasty meat...best salad dressing I've had! The service was on the slow side & we did wait a while for our food but was all round great. Wanting to place an order for take-always now & the phone lines are just ringing ?

We tried Prime Grill's Monday special the other day and we were suitably impressed! Excellent steaks, great service. The salad and the chips were on the small side, but for the price, you can't really complain.
The ambiance and service at Prime Grill is marvelous!

Last night, I booked and arranged to have dinner here with a girlfriend (who is currently at Fourways Life Hospital for treatments) and was excited as I had heard it was also owned by Kong (who I love) so I had wanted to really treat her to something special.

Prime Grill has plush, leather interiors with beautiful downlighting and all things wine and steak as a trend. Great location and I was excited to finally be eating here, as I am sure everyone knows what a big steakhouse fan I am.

Our table was booked for 6:30pm, we arrived slightly early and as we sat down, we ordered a bottle of Warwick Wine's First Lady, our mains, and then settled in for a much needed catch-up.

And we waited and we waited.. after over an hour of waiting for what should be a fairly simple mains order (without starters), we frantically gesticulated to try to get our waiters attention and said that he needs to bring the bill because we cannot wait any longer for two vegetarian lasagnes.

Shortly after that the waiter arrived back at the table with both the food (which resembled sloppy vegetables and a layer of pasta on a plate), and our bill. What an awful experience and what was even worse was that what arrived, was certainly not a vegetarian lasagne by any standard.

The friend who joined us for the dinner was so upset that he actually left his business card and requested that they get the management to call him muttering that there is very little chance that they actually will.

*Recommendation: Slow service, very little attentiveness and one of the most over-priced sloppy meals that I have been served to date. I actually felt sorry for Vegetarians (of which I am not one). I wish that I had photographed the lasagne in hindsight, but we were so upset that we actually just left the food, settled the bill and walked out.

Great service, spacious interior, relaxed ambience and a comfortable crowd. Nice, varied wine list and they had what we asked for - always a plus 😉. It's a steakhouse, so we had the lamb chops with pap and sauce and the sirloin with a baked potato and mushroom sauce. All nicely basted, good quality and tasty. Unfortunately, we didn't have space for dessert. A good option for a reasonably priced steak.

Needed a spot for a late afternoon drink and ended up finding this place. Between 4 and 6 pm cocktails are buy one get one free. What a great incentive as we ended up eating onion rings and chips as a snack. Was a great afternoon.
Yolisa
Amazing steak! I would give the steak 5/5. I had my steak with coliflower mash, which I enjoyed a lot. I tasted my friends steak fillet pasta and it was good. The steak pieces were too big in my opinion. I would definitely make it my steak spot.

For part two of restaurant week, I decided to book lunch for 3 here. We all had the same meals: chicken wings and sirloin with salad. I must say I was impressed with the food. Barbecue sauce was sticky and tasty, it was perfect. Then the aged sirloin was cooked to perfection with a full salad on the side. The wait between starters and main was a little long but worth the wait. Prime grill is not just the restaurant. There's a conference centre upstairs and a butchery inside the restaurant. The wine selection was extensive giving us a lot to choose from and getting the order right was a cherry on top. Thank you. After having a look at the reviews and their menu on Zomato - I was looking forward to our dinner tonight. Unfortunately their menu has not been updated on Zomato and most of their vegetarian options like the soup and vegetable salad are no longer available. I settled for the Greek salad which I must say was one of the best salads I've had - while Garrick Clark was in his element with the chicken snitchel with creamy spinach. I would suggest updating the menu to avoid any confusion or let downs in the future. Being a Tuesday they were very quiet but I'm sure it gets fairly busy on the weekends. If you're a meat lover definitely pop into the Prime Grill - you won't be disappointed.
Devin Sage
Very average. The steak I ordered tasted kinda odd. It had a very very very heavy taste to it. I had it with a red wine sauce and it just tasted like pure salt. On that particular night, they had good music on so that kinda helped it.

Prime Grill is a gem hidden away in Cedar Square and I have no idea why I never heard of it before. I know I'm a veg and maybe that's why I never took much notice of it. Boy was that a mistake. There are quite a few great and tasty veg offers.

Home-baked bread is brought to the table the minute you sit down and it is truly moreish. I had the veg lasagne which most restaurants get wrong, it's often tasteless and bland but Prime Grill's is anything but. I would recommend it to anyone. My friend had a 30-day matured rib-eye steak which she claims was perfection and the mashed potatoes was also a winner.

For dessert I had cheesecake and my friend the ice cream and chocolate sauce. Both very good choices.

And I have to mention that the wine was equally as fantastic as the food.
Natalie Lazaris
Cosy decor and beautifully presented restaurant. The cut of meat is great, helps that the butcher is on sight. Unfortunately not much atmosphere as the resturant is quiet. I feel that they can definitely improve their attention to detail. The wine although in a cellar, was served warm -big no no. In saying that the service was great, attentive waiter and very friendly.

Had a great evening wine tasting and pairing with Overgaauw in August 2015.
After much following up as Prime Grill didn't call us and we felt like they had forgotten about us.
We ordered wine from the restaurant and only received part of the order in around Oct/Nov 2015.
It is now almost February 2016 and we are still waiting to hear about the balance of the order or refund.
Hoping that this Zomato review gets someone to do something.

The mood sugar sweet... Chill out music accompanied by a glass of ken forester and simply amazing rack of lamp with a mixed veg price 145.00 there are no words

I've been thinking about Prime Grill ever since I went there, (I've also dreamed about it). And it's definitely my 5. There are so many aspects that make this my perfect restaurant, I'm not even sure where to begin...

But how about the absolutely amazing atmosphere? When you walk in there is an air of sophistication, and a timeless classic feel. Like you've just stepped into an old bar in Chicago and all that is missing are the cigars and the mafia accents. The tables are close enough together to still be an intimate setting, but you are not right on top of the next table and touching elbows with the persons behind you. The decor and the details are incredible. And being able to see into butchery and being informed about the different meat cuts is always very nice.

The service is fantastic. We had a server named Patrick, and he was simply the best. He had a good sense of humour and kept the drinks coming without having to be called to the table with those awkward waits. The host was also such a lovely lady. She served us our mains and was very well informed. (It's always such a pleasure to see all the staffing getting involved and having the hosts and managers being apart of the floor team). That brings me to my next point of approval... The manager Gary was always involved in conversations with the different patrons enjoying a fine meal. He presented the different meats and specials that were available and checked up on all the tables. Always so nice to have.

And then the reason I will never be a size 0. The food. I don't think the dictionary has enough adjectives for me to describe how much I loved the food. I had the fillet medium rare and it was even better than any expectation I could ever have had. The meat was tender and flavourful. The mash ever so smooth. The fish of the day was not overly fishy and the sauce that went with was the perfect combination. The side salads and dressing even better. But the absolute indulgence is the Belgium chocolate tart that is sin on your lips for about half a second and then the taste sensation keeps you coming back for more.

I will definitely be back again and again... And would recommend Prime Grill for almost any occasion (but it would make for an absolutely stunning date night).

There is a pear and ginger martini that is by far the best martini I have ever had! The meat selection is varied and everything is well cooked to your liking. Only issue is one side is given with meat dishes, but that is not a deal breaker. Or it should not be. Good place to enjoy a lovely Romantic dinner.

Had dinner at PRIME GRILL at Cedar Square last Saturday with my hubby and some friends. The decor is gorgeous, reminiscent of an ultra-luxurious "Old Boys Club", all done in leather and brass. Our starters included the marrow bones, a beef carpaccio and the mushrooms rio - all very tasty! I had the lamb shank for mains with cauliflower mash (so nice that they have banting friendly side options!) It was simply delicious and such a large potion that I managed to save some to take home for lunch the next day. My dinner companions all chose steaks after having been presented with the selection by Gary, the manager, who explained the relative merits of each different cut. Dessert was an all chocolate affair - a decadent chocolate torte and melt-in-the-mouth chocolate fondant were shared between us to finish off our wonderful meal.

Where do Peskatarians go to eat
fish? Um ~ PrimeGrill may not be your first guess, but when your partner is a
meat and potatoes man, this restaurant features higher on your fav restaurant
list than one would imagine. The wine list is extensive, although a little on
the expensive side. For a match made in heaven ~ be sure to try the Blue
Cheese Mushroom starter ~ paired with a Rustenberg Stellenbosch RM Nicholson
(2010.) Alternatively ~ there is a wide selection of craft beers for him and
heavenly cocktails for her…A Chilli Cherry Mojito anyone?

Warning: the portion sizes are
generous, but side dishes ~ while there are plenty to choose from, are all
billed separately. The veggies of the day and roast potatoes are the perfect
complement (in my book) to either the fresh Kingklip or Sole. And of course ~
there is a plentiful range of grain-fed, antibiotic-free, organic, happy-hung,
dry-aged steaks to choose from. The manage takes great pride to personally bring
a few cuts to your table ~ and talk you through the differences in meat
marbling and more. Very educational, as well as interesting (even for a
non-meat eater.)

As for the dessert menu, make sure
that you leave some space for the rich, decadent chocolate torte, like velvet
in your mouth. Coming in a very close second ~ my all-time favourite, Apple Pie
~ almost like Granny used to make it; OK ~ maybe a little better!

We went to Prime Grill Fourways last night for dinner. What an exceptional evening from beginning to end. We were welcomed with warm faces and seated at a beautiful table outside. The service was 5 star from beginning to end. Had a delicious bottle of wine with probably the nicest chicken liver starter I have had in a long time. Our fillet was cooked to perfection. Definitely worth a visit for dinner.

Met up for a Saturday night birthday dinner at the Prime Grill in Cedar.

Service delivery was impeccable from the moment we stepped.

I had the fish of the day which was sole fish. Well seasoned, and quite a large portion of fish (enough to serve 2 I rate).

My fiancé had the 500g of ribs which he enjoyed. Their sticky bbq sauce was quite delicious. A little bit overpriced for 500g of ribs though.

Overall great service, good food but a little bit pricey for my liking.

Butchery/ Restaurant very nice decor good portions ordered the pork chop and my partner the prime rib was cooked to perfection but needed more seasoning and flavour

I really enjoy the steaks here... It's really the only reason I keep going back. Every time I order a side of jollof rice there's always inconsistencies in how they make it...Very disappointing. Tried fish last time I was there and it was overly over cooked after I specifically asked them to just sear my salmon. Service is slightly above average.

Oooh! Let me start by saying this review may be bias, I did after all get freebies... I was invited to Prime Grill as part if their VIP list as part of the promotion their doing... they offered a variety platter to showcase their menu which was absolutely divine. Please pop into the butchery in the restaurant which is open to the public! Gary the manager was very friendly and even gave me a tour of the stunning private dining areas which don't come with venue hire (yes please!) But a very reasonable minimum spend. Oh I die for the chocolate torte!

Restaurant opened till late for a birthday event. The food was great and the staff was friendly. Only problem was that as we were a big group, we got our food at different times.

This beautiful restaurant has been let down by the limited foot traffic. Some of the smaller aspects, the complimentary freshly baked rolls, have begun to suffer as a result. The starters I've tried have been average. But the mains have been consistently good and prime grill is definatley the home of the best steak in jhb. Staff are also very well-trained. Oh, and there is great caulimash for the banters!
Yasmin
Tranquil warm restaurant. Perfect for a romantic dinner or a birthday. Fillet steaks were cooked perfectly with a great taste . Recommend the chocolate fondant for dessert.

Decor is clean and fresh, and upmarket
Service was attentive.
Atmosphere was dry and dead, no music.
Roast potatoes were deep fried wedgies , dry and very salty!
Vegies and salad was done just the way I like them.
Manager was non existent.

Steak was overdone and dry, I ordered med/well and it was so dry and saw-dusty !!!!
On their menu it says they will not be held responsible for dry steak if you order it more than med and they mean it cause it was one of the worst steaks ever, however if so many other chefs can get it right to produce a delicious juicy steak that is not bleeding on my plate then why can't they?????? it's such pretentious bull !
Fire that chef and get one that will keep ALL your customers happy.....

Jelly and custard was horrible, custard was sandy and jelly was too hard, how does one get jelly and custard wrong??
Way over priced for below average food.
Nicholas Caswell
Fantastic as always. Great service, brilliant food. I would highly recommend Prime Grill. The lamb shank was cooked to perfection, sides amazing.
Michael Lotter
A great spot for steaks! The calamari starters is good, the ox tail very nice, but the steaks are out of this world. Try the green peppercorn sauce, medium to rare rump steak!

Came here for my birthday on a Tuesday and it was a mediocre experience. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and you receive a warm welcome as you enter but from then on you pretty much get forgotten about. We were a table of 10 and the waiter was friendly and good with the orders but was not attentive during the whole meal - plates left on the table too long, having to find him to order a drink etc. The meat was out of this world, one of the best steaks I've ever had. My friend ordered fish (which I know you shouldn't at a meat restaurant) and is probably why she had to send it back twice. Maybe they were having a an off night but I won't go back in a hurry.

As you enter Prime Grill you get the sense this is going to a great dining experience, the decor is beautiful with leather booth seats and beautiful decor. I was attending a friend's birthday dinner. We were served by Patrick our waiter who was very accommodating, I was the only vegetarian in the group so we asked to speak to the chef as there is no vegetarian main meals on the menu. The chef graciously did come to speak to us and unfortunately did not have many options for me that appealed he suggested a Vegetable Balti and crumbed and deep fried camembert cheese. I decided to not go with either and asked the manager if I could order from Kong next door. She said unfortunately not so I looked at my options again. We ordered the Calamari, lamb kebabs and mushroom rio for starters. The group enjoyed the starters especially the calamari and mushrooms. The complimentary bread is really yummy, soft fresh and with a twist of coarse salt on the top, the group asked for more bread which Patrick did provide. I decided on the ribboletti soup with borletti beans, celery which was really tasty and I enjoyed the soup. This was my main meal substitute. The rest at the table enjoyed the steak and Red bell soup. My hubby had the lamb shank which he said was tender however lacked flavor.
The most disappointing part of the evening was when the owner was hosting a table in one of the private rooms and was allowed to order from Kong, whilst we were turned down on that request another table was allowed to. We saw streams of food from Kong enter the restaurant. When we called the manager she said that the owner allowed it but we could not and she could not do anything about it. For that reason I believe the owner does not appreciate paying customers and I will never go back to Prime Grill neither will my friends that did enjoy their steaks. The manager was quite apologetic but the damage was done.
Dave Perrett
Pork Lion Chops, Lamb chops and Rib-eye was all great for the family. I particularly enjoyed the seasonal vegetables as a side. My only disappointment is with most SA restaurants, is the fact that the portions are too large. We were celebrating last night and it would have been great to have a 3 course meal. You just cannot.
Tracy Lee Matticks
Very great first impression, very fancy. I ordered a sirloin steak and asked for it to be done medium to well and my friend asked for his rare, when the food came mine was less done than his. It was my first time meeting some people there so I didn't want to send it back, so that aspect wasn't so great. Other than that the food was still tastey and service was good.
Brad Cisak
Really really great steak! Had ours with garlic sauce. Will definitely recommend this to others. Only one complaint... They ran out of bread rolls. You would think when you paying that much for a steak you would get bread rolls but this wasn't to be!! Great atmosphere.
Thavashni Reddy
Great atmosphere and awesome service. They do not have an extensive menu. However the quality of meat is great, particularly the free range beef. The mussel starter is really good. The wine list is good
SimonThePieMan
I honestly expected a better cut of meat when I ate here the first time. Although on my second return it was far better. It kind of feels like a "New York" style experience in the 1970's and the waiters are extremely well trained and very good.
Stewart McQuade
I'm a regular at Prime and the service is great and the food even better! They have a nice wine selection and private booths if you want to have a private family or business function. Will be back soon!
Stephen Spencer
Great steakhouse. I was very happy with the service and the meat here was very nice. They cooked exactly how I like it and tasted fantastic.

If you in the mood for a nice evening out and some meat I would go here.

Will be back for some more great meat
Mandisa
This is one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to. Went for a dinner date with my boyfriend, and to this day have never had lamb shank so great.

This is now my boyfriends favourite place. Our service was awesome, lovely waiter. The food was out of this world. If yu're a meat lover this is the pkace for you.
Chris Hartman
Prime Grill is a new spot that opened up in cedar square.

It has a formal atmosphere and looks to be the real deal when it comes to serving top notch aged steak.

I say looks to be, because sadly all that the restaurant has to offer is an empty promise. The waiter got our order wrong in almost every possible way. My steak was so rare I could barely find it.

Theres nothing Prime about this Grill.
Penny Parbhoo
Great steakhouse! We have been there twice now. Just a pity it has a poor kids menu. Also it would be great if they added a burger to their menu.
Cory
This spot now occupies what used to be the very vibey Central Grill. The decor is upmarket and so are the prices. They specialize in steak so don't bother with the Duck Confit or anything not red meat on the menu. I visited a few times and I have very mixed feelings. Sometimes good and sometimes the opposite. So I'll wait and see if my view improves. Guys, if you are going to compete with the top steak houses, you'd better get it together. You are not there yet.
Gillian Nicholson
Big bill, slow kitchen service ????
Bronwyn Stromsoe
The restaurant decor is lovely and full of promise. But the food did not live up to expectation. It was average at best. Calamari starter was chewy. Steak main was raw and cold in the middle and had to be sent back. Duck confit was dry. Unlikely to return!
Murray Copeland
Excellent.. Been here a few times and the service for one is great. Most importantly the food is amazing.. Allen's ribs are the best in JHB hands down.
AJ Pienaar
I was really disappointed with Prime Grill. Out of 5 people, 3 of the pieces of meat were not cooked correctly. One was actually sent back. The venue is beautiful, but if you claim to specialize in meat, you've got to get it right!
