Review Onenineone Restaurant - Johannesburg

Two Tasty Tummies
If you have a food emergency and in dire need of a great foodie evening, call oneNINEone immediately. We enjoyed their 3-course menu that they created for Restaurant Week SA 2017, where we were able to choose between EARTH (vegetarian dish), SEA (seafood dish) and FIELD (chicken or beef dish) for starters, mains and dessert, but dessert had no seafood, which makes sense as we have never seen a seafood dessert. We started with EARTH (Baby Beetroot, Celeriac, Gorgonzola, Baby Carrot, Beurre Noisette, what a mouthful ay) and FIELD (Chicken Liver Parfait, Smoked Chicken Breast, Corn Forms, Mushroom). The FIELD had delicious elements, but the chicken breast was a bit dry for us. As for EARTH, it just stood out with the amazing pairing between the baby beetroot and gorgonzola, an absolute match made in heaven. For mains, we ordered SEA (Line Fish, Octopus, Mustard Seeds, Tamarin, Baby Brinjal, Tomato) and FIELD (Rib-Eye, Biltong Pap, Swiss chard, Bone Marrow, Horseradish). Now let us tell you, these were both fantastic. The mustard seeds and baby brinjal in the SEA dish were like nothing we have ever tasted, a big thank you to Chef Xavier for introducing the unique flavours. The FIELD was perfection. A very heavy and rich dish, but everything on the plate was pure indulgence and complimented each other so well. Not a big fan of pap, but this was one of those times that flipped your whole perception of a dish around. Dessert was EARTH (Carrot, Saffron, White Chocolate, Pecan, Churned Buttermilk) and FIELD (Strawberry Varieties, Wheatgrass, Almond). EARTH was like a deconstructed carrot cake with warm buttermilk to ensure it wasn't dry, this is what we call comfort. The FIELD was an interesting one, with the wheatgrass kind of giving you the idea of mowing the lawn while eating strawberries, not our type of dish though. It is always great when you are served with true friendliness, makes the world's difference. They did everything a great waiter should. Serve and clear dishes quickly, be friendly and talkative when talked to, check up on you and made sure we had everything we need. The one odd thing was the number of people checking on us. As we were eating, our waiter and the floor manager kept on coming by to ask how our meals are. This is not that bad, but it is a bit overwhelming. Romantic, semiformal and just plain relaxing was the feels we got from them. oneNINEone is beautiful, a wide open and arty restaurant with comfortable seating and an open kitchen for you to gawk at as the head chef prepares dishes. oneNINEone is pricey, we won’t lie. But having good food, great service, and the perfect atmosphere is definitely worth paying the extra buck for in our opinion. TTT’s rating out of 5: Food - 4 | Service - 4.5 | Atmosphere – 5 | Value – 5 oneNINEone gets a 'Fist Bump' from Two Tasty Tummies

Amazing food, stunning setting. Not very busy so its easy to have a conversation without being drowned out. Attentive wait staff and overall, a lovely dinner or lunch place.

Good food that's no question, although quite expensive when starting to compare to similar establishments. Something different earning the 4th star: The kitchen is open top the restaurant and the plating happens right in front of you. Something unique to fine dining.

Absolutely average service! We were sat in the incorrect area for starters and then asked to move for mains, the dessert was a very underwhelming 3 course meal. The duck reads as a thigh on the menu however the establishment serves you a breast portion, very chewy! There are some items that are not available on the menu like the set 5 course experience. The waiter was very clueless on the meals displayed on the menu, this place is not worth the buck! Too average for my palate!!!

Valentines disappointment!

I am utterly disgusted by the service-level of OneNineOne. I made a reservation for Valentines as a surprise for my wife, reservations were made on the 6th Feb and confirmed by OneNineOne via SMS the same day. I called to confirm the booking at 18:18 on Valentines day, which a lady confirmed my booking and details (name, surname and cell).

On arrival, the ‘so-called’ manager, Duma, received us and advised we did not have a booking. He then disgracefully dismissed us and in a disgusting manner, told us we did not follow process and pay a deposit as the other patrons did (how were we to know if we were not told to??). He then daringly told me I could not have confirmed the booking earlier at 18:18, as the lady who does the bookings leaves at 16:30, insinuating I am a liar! He then proceeded to ignore us as if we were second hand citizens.

We then spoke to another manager named Troy, who managed to calm us down and told us there must have been a mistake on the bookings. He managed to get us a seating by the side table by the entrance, on the wall by the kitchen, which was not ideal considering the cost of the dinner, however we had no option elsewhere due it being Valentines and gave us a champagne as an apology.

The waiters seemed everywhere and were all in different casual outfits however the food and presentations was good.

During our meals, not once did Duma come past and apologise. We have never been treated with such disrespect by an establishment and will avoid this restaurant from now on.

With Christmas in the air, and jingles play all around, OneNineOne does it with style, the coffee is always good and espresso delightful, it definitely takes to the cravings. Oh yes the crowd is a bit grown up but well deserving, and with holidays in Johannesburg, it's quiet yet cool,
And just to mention the beer is cold which is great and if you get your smoke, on, the outside cigar lounge is fabulous.

I came for dinner during restaurant week. Wonderful decor and good service. The food was beautifully present. Although my meal was flavourful, some of the combinations didn't work for me. Others however, really enjoyed their mains. The banana and koeksister dessert with Rooibos was amazing! It's worth it to go just for that.

Delicious food, desserts, tea and coffee with snacks, nice people who serve and hard working too and beautiful, relaxing location and view. Yummy

I had the absolute pleasure of dining here during restaurant week!
What a lovely experience.
The ambience is warm and inviting and the tables are elegantly set, with beautiful crystal wine glasses.
Our waitress was knowledgeable and efficient.
The food was sensational. We tried all the dishes on offer and I really must commend the chefs on the delectable menu they prepared for restaurant week. It was evident that all plates were prepared with love and attention to detail.
I have to say that we were particularly blown away by the Tuna Tataki and the Tomato Gazpacho.
We will be back to try their a la carte menu.
This was an excellent choice for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Beautiful decor and wide selection of food and wine.

Delicious well presented plates by attentive waitering staff. We were pleased to be greeted by the chef as well.

Peaceful ambience. Simply put, a great experience.

I finally managed to dine @ OnenineOne.. The food was amazing . Great Ambiance and excellent service .
The wine selection was great ! I enjoyed the lamb and my friend had the duck which she enjoyed as well .
I can’t wait to try other dishes on their menu !

Ordered venison and the meat was too tough to cut through. Service at the restaurant was also slow even though the place wasn’t full. Not value for money.

Don’t be fooled by what looks like a very quiet restaurant. This little gem oozes perfection. Friendly staff. Perfect meals every time. Love this restaurant .

Never miss a Kitchen Party at OneNineOne and have always wanted to come for a proper sit down meal. Got the opportunity last night with family for a special birthday. It was so sad to see the restaurant so empty, we were, quite literally the only table there. The service here is ALWAYS on point. Fantastic, efficient and friendly. The food, however, was disappointing. The menu has changed from the one shown here and you can choose from a tasting menu or a la carte, with around 5 options each for starters, mains & dessert. There are some interesting dishes, soft shell crab, sweet breads and blesbok ( which I assume will change depending on availability) and everything was quite tasty. It just wasn't brilliantly cooked and lacked the finesse of a great chef required to take it to the next level. At these prices you expect better.
Can't wait for the next Kitchen Party.

Visited for breakfast and luv’d their breakfast buffet. They have a wide range of food to choose from...the usual hot meals, cold meat & cheese section, and patties, cereals & fruit. It’s a lovely experience where business types come to have breakfast. My bacon & eggs were good!

There is a very good reason why this is Restaurant Week's best restaurant in Joburg! The food is was delicious, the combinations of flavours and textures were incredible and I would definitely recommend OneNineOne to anyone looking to go for that truly special night out!

Great service and a nice ambience for the restaurant.Food was so overrated and just about average.Nothing on our plates was mind blowing. The ribeye had no flavor at all. The linefish and octopus was entirely over cooked!

I'll start with the good - the waiters are very friendly and service was fast.
The bad - the presentation of the food was poor. The place settings and the plates did nothing to make tge food more attractive. The food was bland and not what I would expect from such a highly rated restaurant.

Food was decent and well presented but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth.OneNineOne was one of several restaurants my husband and I visited during restaurant week and unfortunately the experience was not great. Firstly, the restaurant did not allow corkage which would have been acceptable if they had the wine we wanted to drink available on the menu. Secondly, the restaurant week menu presented 2 dining options R250 for a 2 course and R350 for a 3 course. We weren’t keen on the desserts offered under the 3 course option so we asked our waitress if we could take the 2 course option and then order our desserts from the normal menu and she said it should be fine. When it came to ordering the dessert however her story changed completely. First she told us that if we order our dessert from the normal menu we would be charged full price for everything else. When we questioned this, we were told all desserts were out of stock which turned out to be a BLATANT LIE because a few minutes later a representative from the kitchen came and told us that all desserts are in fact available. I did not appreciate being lied to so I will not be dining at this restaurant again as there are many other good restaurants in the vicinity to choose from.

Shocking service, our waitress had no interest in serving us, had no idea what was on the menu and had to be found for the dessert order and the bill. Food was nice, but the steak was tough. Cherry on the top was the parking ticket machines were not working properly and the parking office did not have change. Even the boom was broken. Not a great experience. At least the Chef did do the rounds and admitted they were having staff issues, but the service only got worse after that.

Came here for Restaurant week. The environment and ambience was quite romantic with its luxurious high ceilings and gentle lighting. The service of personels were attentive from waiter to chef, who personally came to see to our table and ask our opinions of the dishes chosen for Restaurant Week.
The food was devine: the appetizer of lightly seared trout with a mix of assorted sea weed was absolutely refreshing.
For the main course I opted for the "Field" which consisted of a medium rare rump and blocks of biltong pap. The fat included was eye-rollingly amazing, popping and melting in your mouth, the mix of vegetables and horse radish sauce was contrastingvand then the steak was, of course, the highlight. Although I wished they automatically served it with a steak knife as rare tendons were a little hard to cut with the normal dinner knife.
The dessert I opted for "Field" again, which consisted of strawberries and green sorbet - which I have fairly mixed feelings about. The strawberry's sweetness was quite inconsistent and the sorbet was clashing - sometimes it tasted amazing, sometimes it tasted rather bitter. It was a love-hate relationship.
And the main downside of the experiences was the wait for each course as took a little too long, approximating 30-45 minutes between each dish.
It was a classy experience overall, leaving elegantly sufficient with a sense regality.
Wow, what a surprise! Mostly that is was that empty (admittedly a Tuesday night). And surprisingly good food and service, for a hotel restaurant. I started with a charred tuna (although only the zucchini garnish was actually "charred"). The flavours and textures were excellent and I would recommend it have it again any time... For mains I had seared/ grilled salmon. The fish was done to PERFECTION. Beautifully golden/ crisp on the outside yet juicy, tender and mouth melting texture underneath. Will come back for it, be sure. My nephew had the chicken breast and also raved about that too. The fries were well seasoned with a salt/ pepper sprinkle although they were a little soggy for my personal taste. He finished off with a dark chocolate bubble dessert with pistachio ice cream and I had a slightly too cold cappuccino. His face beamed as he ate and promised to do a rave review to his foodie friends. Mpho served us perfectly, with a balance of politeness and space without being too attentive. With a little more attention to detail this would have been 5/5.

Simply sublime! We had the mussel and corn chowder to start followed by the sea food platter. The prices aren't cheap but for a special date or event it's well worth it. The service could be a touch better to match the 5 star location and food though. Definitely worth it if you want something a little upmarket and trendy.

You do not get value for money at this restaurant. The menu is a bit boring as they aren't many options to chose from. The service was goo though.

OneNineOne is my favorite restaurant that I visited during Restaurant Week. This was my first time dining at the restaurant and I hadn't heard much about it previously. My expectations were blown away by the set menu and I enjoyed every morsel of the 3 course dinner. The salmon ceviche was full of flavor and a nice lift start to the meal. The monkfish was served with a delicious sauce inspired by eastern flavors and mussels. I had the burnt white chocolate dessert wth berries which had a perfect combination of sweet and tarte flavors. The Bree cheese and pancetta dessert also looked amazing. OneNineOne may fly under the radar but it comes to the party with it's A-Game!

This was our second Restaurant Week visit (the previous one was last year). And I must admit, I enjoyed our previous visit much more. The service was really good, and the presentation was simply beautiful, but I personally thought that the tastes and flavours were a bit lacking? I really enjoyed the soy salmon ceviche though - and it is such a gorgeous restaurant, with a bird's eye view of the open plan kitchen!

Oct 2017- Return visit and once again menu and servicw did not disappoint. The chef has changed but he went to all tables introducing himself and gave us an insight into the menu. Another good night.

April 2017 - The restaurant is gorgeously spacious with comfy couches and chairs with shades of purples, creams and browns. The open plan kitchen in middle lets you watch the chef prep your meals.

Our 3 course meal started with an autumn salad of goats cheese creme, butternut salad and a chicken dish. The salad was divine with a bit of pomegranate and zucchini, delicious. Chicken was requested without biltong dusting and still tasted yum . Mains were the vindoloo monk fish and pork belly. Pork was cooked to perfection with crackling and some crackling snow. The vindoloo sauce delicately flavoured and was a great combo with the fish and mussels.
Desserts we had a plum tart and a white chocolate berry/rhubarb concation. Beautiful presentation of dishes and excellent flavours. Each dish off the pass is completed by the head chef to ensure perfection. Waiters and restaurant manager readily available and attentive.

Had a nice 3 course meal, pork was a little fatty but all round good evening, good service and good food. Would go there again but don't go if you on a budget.

A fantastic venue, but lacking in atmosphere; despite the open kitchen layout.
The meal was very good, and the front-of-house lady was great; but the service was very slow considering how empty the restaurant was. With the abundance of excellent restaurants in the Rosebank area, I doubt we'll be going back any time soon.

Visited OneNineOne for dinner during restaurant week. Nice setting with an open kitchen so you feel part of the kitchen action. The food was very good, particularly the pork belly!

I have been looking forward to eating here for some time. For restaurant week I had the following:

Starter: octopus salad was delish 4/5

Main: pork belly. Soooo good 4.5/5

Dessert: deep fried brownie ice cream. This was really devine and I would come back for it. I think the little piecs of brownie was not necessary though. 4.5/5
Jessica Everson
My husband and I went here as part of Restaurant week and we weren't disappointed! The food was really, really good and the service was great. We had the goats cheese and beetroot flatbread and the chorizo and octopus salad to start (the flatbread was a winner) followed by the Dorado in tomato bisque and the Pork Belly (seriously the best pork belly we have ever eaten - it literally melted in your mouth!). For dessert we had the fried chocolate brownie ice-cream and the nectarine layer cake with buttered popcorn ice-cream, both of which were fantastic. The wine list is admittedly a bit pricey and there are very few 'by the glass' options but that's really the only negative thing I can say. I was worried it would be quite noisy as there was a function of some sort in the lounge but it didn't have any affect and even the kitchen, which is open, was surprisingly quiet and calm. Highly recommended :)

For restaurant week we opted to try oneNINEone..went for dinner..it has a lovely setting I enjoyed the open kitchen set up and ability to watch the chef..friendly staff and efficient service too..loved that the waiter poured out my olive oil and vinegar for the complimentary bread..for starters I had the goats cheese flatbread it was well presented and a generous portion..for main I had the sea bass it was beautifully laid out however I did not enjoy the salad or the tomato bisque I found it to be quite overpowering and had quite a pungent taste..for dessert I had the nectarine cake which was quite average..I doubt I'll be back in a hurry..

From the minute we arrived we were greeted with smiles and friendly and efficient service. We sat in the garden next to a pond under umbrellas, which is so rare these days it was so relaxing and beautiful.

Our waitress Sakhile was so helpful, as was the manager. Everything was thought of and we were thoroughly spoilt - even going as far as to pour the olive oil and vinegar for us for the table bread. We ordered the pork dish, every bite was delicious, and then we ordered the nectarine cake and the chocolate brownie dessert, which we shared. The whole experience was just incredible, and I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone

OneNineOne was our pick for restaurant week and it did not disappoint. We were seated outside in a beautiful and relaxed garden setting, perfect for lunch or just a relaxed drink while overlooking the fountain.

The starter was an octopus and chorizo salad. Very impressive presentation and equally delicious. The perfect refreshing start to the meal on a warm spring day.

The main course, bourbon glazed pork belly, was a little disappointing. Lack of diversity in the elements let the dish down. While the bourbon marinade was tasty, the lack of further flavour on the plate made it ordinary.

The pistachio nectarine layer cake for dessert was fantastic! The dish provided miltiple elements of diverse flavours which complimented the cake perfectly.

Overall a great experience, we will be back :)

While in the mood to head out to somewhere chilled we decided to step into this lovely restaurant. The atmosphere was so calm and soothing without feeling awkward.
I ordered the pork belly which came with some amazing crispy pork crackling and just enough acidity in the coleslaw to perfectly complement the pork dish. My partner had salmon which looked and tasted great.

Our birthday dinner was outstanding! And the service was excellent. Highlight of my meal was the Lobster Bisque. Such special care was taken into each bite. I will definitely go back again.

Service excellence and a glamourous night out in the heart of Rosebank!

We visited OneNineOne during the recent Restaurant Week and although I'm generally not a fan of hotel restaurants, I am glad we gave this one a try.

Donned with beautiful images of Johannesburg's infamous Jacaranda trees, OneNineOne offers a local elegance from the second you step inside. The staff undoubtedly have some of the best service training I have experienced in Johannesburg and ensured our every need was catered to throughout the night.

The food was great - the pork belly starter definitely stole the show, I all but licked the plate! The chicken and sole mains were both excellent but didn't compare to the extraordinarily high standards set by the pork belly starter. The only real disappointment was their limited wine list, for an establishment of this calibre and a gorgeous wine cellar on show, I really did expect more.

Overall it was a lovely and very well priced meal, complimented by top notch service and worth a visit for a special night out!

Disappointed is an understatement when describing oneNINEone at the Hyatt in Rosebank last night.

The menu is amazing, make no mistake it offers such promise. We felt rushed when ordering our food, numerous waitrons kept asking us what we would like for our mains following our starter order...we wanted to enjoy the evening but at one point we had to ask them to stop asking us. The food looks amazing and my starter pork belly was an ample portion but lacked flavour.

When we were ready to order mains, our waitress wrote it down, a chicken supreme and the sea bass, the food on the tables around us looked spectacular and the open kitchen is nice to watch.

To cut a long review short, after 25 minutes we ordered a second bottle of Glen Carlou Chardonnay to help us with our food, we asked where our food was as it was evident that nothing was being prepared in the kitchen...our food never arrived. Our waitron told the manager that we hadn't ordered any mains, quite bizarre.

Nonetheless, despite the manager offering to have the kitchen prepare our order we'd lost interest, pity really.

The ambience is cool and the decor is amazing, but the service was poor. Our second bottle of wine was discounted, thank you...but an apology would of been nice.

I had such excitement dining here. Especially because it was an occasion for the family.
Booking 3 weeks in advance didn't help,as upon arrival the table was being set. Apologies were accepted. We moved on. Service was attentive. However in an operation of this calibre you don't expect that whilst clearing the cutlery gets dropped on you or near you. Even when the staff removed glasses. It was clumsy and disruptive.
The food was hit and miss. Sea bass dry. Sole was delicious. Veal wasn't hot but rather warm.
Beautiful setting and willing staff.
So much to be improved upon.
Manager was vigilant. And engaged.

Went for dinner last night with my hubby as part of Restaurant week and we were definitely not disappointed. It is a beautiful restaurant with excellent service - friendly and efficient.
For starters we had the pork belly (melt-in-your-mouth soft) and the quinoa koftas with a carrot puree and black bean and sweetcorn salsa (quite a spicy dish but extremely tasty!). For mains, we both had the sole ( perfectly cooked and scrumptious with the tomato sauce but would reconsider the veggies served with it). The dishes of the evening were however the dessert - I had the opera cake (vanilla and chocolatey goodness) served with chocolate ice cream and chocolate ganache- a total chocolate overload! My husband had the almond tart with candied pears and white chocolate ice cream - a surprisingly awesome dish!
The only reason for not giving a 5 is the finer details, frequency of topping up my drink and not changing cutlery when ordering seafood.

Enjoyed a lovely dinner, celebrating a friends 30th. Five star everything!!! Beautiful food, impeccable service! absolutely impressed 👌🏽 The pork belly is a must-try.
Thembi Mkhabela
This is extremely pricy and they don't mind serving the food cold. That's all the negatives I have. flavour, presentation and service make up for the negatives but no extra points.

Blown away by the menu at Thursday nights Kitchen Party which saw an extensive menu of tasty bites to titillate the palate. Chefs Shaneil and Andrew opened up their kitchen to the public to get hands on and creative. Waterford supplied the wine as we worked our way through mouth watering pulled ribs, calamari with Chipotle mayo, beetroot and goats cheese salad and a chicken wrap that was so good I had two! Highly recommended, Not just for their Kitchen Parties, but for dinner or lunch just about any time. Beautiful setting and gardens add to the experience.

What a beautiful setting, such amazing service, there was a stage where there were 3 people coming to take our orders bring us drinks and offer us some bread. I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. The waitresses were all very friendly and always had a smile on their faces and always asking us if everything was in order and if we needed anything. The food was amazing, the presentation and the taste was phenomenal. Every course was made with such care and respect for all the ingredients. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone and it was especially enjoyable over the restaurant week as it was very affordable.

Wonderful evening last night spent at OneNineOne, Hyatt Regency on Oxford road.

Service: The service was decent. We battled to get our wine glasses full each and every time or to get the waiters attention to order, but I absolutely loved Chef Greg (who did his chef training in Howick) and watching him prepare each and every meal with pride and expert attention.

Food: Starter - Citrus smoked springbok with celery, carrot, cucumber, spiced orange compote and herb shoots
Main - Biltong crusted chicken with pea puree, potato, cauliflower gratin, and rosemary jus
Dessert - Taste of Strawberries*: strawberry panacotta, meringue and sorbet. This for me was the course of the evening! Delicious, beautifully presented and fun!

Ambiance: I love that everything is inspired by Jacarandas (one of my favourite alien trees in South Africa)! The interiors are plush, comfy and they have managed to incorporate booths with tables making the restaurant seem cozy.

*Recommendation: All in all, a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend their slow roast pork belly and taste of strawberries dessert!
Daniel Gloyne
Thanks to restaurant week, opulent dining doesn't have to be expensive. However, I would have still paid any price for the quality of food I received!

With delicate attention to detail on the citrus smoked springbok for our starter, I was left in awe. The flavours worked beautifully together and that dash of citrus just amplified the dish as a whole.

I must be honest, the sight of a whiskey plum caught my eye when choosing the main course and so I chose the slow roast pork belly. It's one of those dishes you see the Masterchef contestants always battling to get right, but OneNineOne excuted the dish with class. The pork just melted as my knife sliced through it and the flavours of the cardamom carrots, whiskey plums, pork and plum coulis tickled my taste buds in delight. For me, such as odd combination, yet it worked so well.

Dessert was a bit of a let down. With a taste of strawberries, and pana cotta being on the list I expected a little bit more of a helping. It seemed to lack that creaminess I have experienced before. The sorbet was out of this world! It was the same sort of sensation I got when I first tried dehydrated ice cream, for spacemen. I honestly didn't see any meringue as stated in the menu but was satisfied enough with the sorbet.

What really struck a cord with us was the calmness of the kitchen and the friendliness of the staff. Mixed in with amazing food and incredible company. This is surely a food experience I won't forget any time soon.

We came here for the Vietnamese Week buffet and stuffed ourselves silly! :)

At R340 pp it was definitely worth it - good quality of food and authentic Vietnamese flavours. They had a great selection of starters, mains and desserts. Favourite starters were the fresh shrimp and pork springrolls, crispy seafood and hoisin chicken. For mains, I enjoyed the fish, prawns in tamarind sauce and crispy chicken. The main treat were the desserts. We had sticky rice and mango, Chè Thái (made with ice, syrup, coconut milk and fruit jelly), a selection of sorbets and ice cream, cake and fruits. I also enjoyed the strawberry and cream and choc macarons!

The service from everyone there was fantastic! The chefs were around and in between the tables interacting with the guests. Our waitress for the evening was attentive, friendly and cleared up our dishes as needed. Love the decor and ambience of the place and will definitely return one day to try out the normal menu..

Beautiful, upmarket space in the Hyatt hotel. Wasn't expecting very much (hotels restaurants tend to disappoint) but had the most wonderful experience here with dishes specifically created to pair with Groot Constania wines. Great flavours, simple dishes and beautiful plating. Defintly worth a further look next time in the Rosebank area, and looking for upmarket dining

The meal was outstanding. Service: 2nd to none!!! Make sure you know your eating etiquette though - because they sure are observant! Had the chicken Ballantine as a main... Which was sublime! ❤️

The ambience in this restaurant is wonderful. The face brick gives it wonderful warmth.
The welcome and service were tops.
Onto the food: The bread arrived and it was deliciously hot and crisp. I ordered just a glass of chardonnay (Deliare) as my partner does not drink poor thing! ..... which was R85.
My partner had the tuna/mushroom starter which she said was not as good as the pervious time and gave it a 7/10. I had the crispy pork belly and rated it 9/10.
For main course she had the kingklip which was 9/10 and I had the ribeye steak. 8/10. The French fries were soggy.
For pudding she had the hazelnut dish which she thought 8/10. I had a lemon meringue ginger thing (for want of a better expression) and would give it 8/10 at a push.
It's not a cheap restaurant. All this with tip came to R950.
At some stage we will go back.

Oh my goodness, what amazing food and service!

Im not one to often eat at hotels in Jozi, as i find the vibe at highly rated hotels a little too quiet and corporate for a night out but boy am i glad that we ate here!
It is inside the Hyatt Regency, the decor is gracefully simple. The kitchen is open so you can watch the masters of kitchen at work.

The service is phenomenal, great attention to detail and very friendly. You feel so special.
We were a table of four and had the following for starters:
I had the tuna with mushroom, kimchi in a red miso green tea broth (i recommend this, perfectly cooked tuna and the flavour orgasmic, all flavours in one bite yet perfectly balanced).
My husband and friends had the smoked kudu loin with mushrooms, blackcurrant and peas and the crispy pork belly with popcorn chouriço and candied kumquats.

And for mains:
I had a delicious dukkah lamb rump on a creamy cardamom carrot puree with crispy artichoke, pomegranate gel and an unami flavoured gravy.
The rest of the table had the crayfish ravioli, with pumpkin, crayfish tail and truffle oil (this was excellent, very delicate and i would order this for myself next time, its expensive but where else would you get this in JHB!?) and the Sea bass with toasted pine kernels and sultanas, this was alright.

Prices are high, buy worth it, plus their wines are reasonably priced.

An added note on the service, which we really appreciated, my friend who also ordered the ravioli asked for Parmesan cheese on the side, moments later a manager came to us, advised him that they will bring the parmesan however if he could please just try it without it as it would over power the delicacy of the crayfish. No cheese was needed!
