Review Willoughby & Co - Johannesburg

Simon Banister
Fantastic fish and sushi restaurant in Hyde Park Mall. I can recommend the peri peri chicken livers for a starter, big enough for 2 to share. The sushi is delectable and as good as anywhere in the world and the calamari to die for. We had impeccable service from warm and friendly staff and you can take your own wine and there is no corkage fee. Oh and the bread and butter pud is great. Not at all stodgy and comes with ice cream...if you can fit it in that is. 10/10. Next time I am in Jo'burg I will definatly be going back. Thank you for a great evening.

Nice sushi and great service! Would definitely recommend to come here!
Mohammed-Raees Dangor
Excellent service and food. Had an issue with a beverage and it was rectified without any questions from the staff. The sushi is exceptional. Manager constantly watches over the staff and makes sure to visit every table.

Food was delicious and waiter just topped the scene
Bonita Bachmann
Service was great. Good sushi as usual. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Complemented with Ken Forrester Merlot. Memorable beautiful evening.
Leon Uys
The tempura prawns are the best! A bit expensive for every day dining, but cheap enough to be a regular for special evenings out. Good friendly knowledgeable staff.
Jan Malan
Excellent service and great sushi!

Funky seafood tucked away nicely in Hyde Park corner. The service could have been better. Nonetheless, the food was great.
Sarada Naidu
Excellent service. Great food. Enjoyed their tempura prawns and sushi.
Ryan Coetzee
The waiter was attentive and our food came quickly, although it was not busy at the time. The food is on the more expensive side, but good.
Barbara Wood
The best seafood restaurant in northern Johannesburg. Sushi to die for, prawn curry, crayfish ... prawns or simply fish & chips.
Susan Gawith
I felt like a nice piece of fish, so we came back after a long absence. We had kabeljoe and barracuda. Both were absolutely excellent. Moist, perfectly cooked and very fresh. A nice change from the limited selection of line fish in most places. They have changed their menu and there are also good options for people who don’t like fish. We will be back soon.
Megan
One of the better restaurants in Jozi - service and quality of food on point. They understand the importance of the entire dining experience and consistently deliver on it.
Amanda Layton
The atmosphere is so relaxed and comforting. The food takes a while to get to the table and the food was cold but it was still delicious and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive! #seafoodlinguinie

Shame. But these guys bear no resemblance to the institution that is the CT Willoughby’s. Small sushi pieces. Average sushi, actually: my rock n roll had a burnt and mayo-drowned prawn on it. And lackluster atmosphere (however, this hasn’t crippled the CT branch’s success).
Heidi
If you are craving for sushi, this is a place to try! Best Sushi Bar in Hyde Park! For a place which is no where close to an ocean, the sushi was fresh, tasty and well priced and the portions are quite big. In conclusion: great value for your money! We love the vibe at Willoughby & Co and the Staff are very friendly and efficient. And please, try the 4x4 and tempura. I promise you, it is the best tempura you will ever eat! :)

Don’t bother to book at Willoboughs - I took the time to make a booking - pity they confirmed the booking but failed to make a table available to us. Such dishonesty and disrespect for paying customers is so disappointing .
Hein Lubbe
Nothing special! Expected more. It can’t be the same restaurant as the one in Cape Town, by no means! Very small and somewhat chewy sushi portions. I have had better sushi at a random Chinese take away in a small town. One would expect the standard in Hyde Park to be much higher.
David
Sushi is okay, not good enough for me to come back. did not have anything else. Services are okay... need more training and stop forgetting my orders.
Gabrielle Marian Dos Santos
Best seafood ever!!!fresh grilled kingklip with their homemade chips,is a must Have!I am very pleased by the service and the hospitality:) well done guys
Jon Tyler
Overlook sole and stewed tuna not seated with a terrible basting sauce taste. Veg and chips are great. Also tempura batter belongs on hake not prawn. Terrible. Only redeeming quality was the good service.
Mike Rosholt
Overwhelming smell of fish (not a good one), blandly cooked, dry and small kingklip portion with NO garnish or anything else on the plate but a few oily chips and a tub of chopped tomato and onion... for R215?! Outrageous.

Decided to finally try Willoughby & Co. as I've heard great things about the Cape Town branch. The menu is appealing if you are craving seafood, but it just didn't live up to the hype.

The food just wasn't worth the price. The sushi portions are small, the fish and chips average and the seafood linguine meh and some of the clams hadn't opened. I don't think the food was fresh and it made all of us nauseous as the day went on. They didn't have Windhoek Draft or Tafel Lager. The location isn't great either. The service was good though.

My go to place to unwind after work. The best place for Edamame beans and green tea. 😃

Nestled in the heart of Hyde Park, this fine establishment is well known for its freshly prepared and beautifullly presented sushi.

The staff greet you with a wide smile and tbh I have never had a complaint when I leave.

If you are looking for an intimate place in the bustle of Johannesburg, this is the place!

We enjoyed a girls night last night thanks to our friendly waiter Isaac!!

Think Japanese in a bustling vibe that encompasses Hyde Park. Willoughby & Co offer sushi, tempura dishes, soups and salads out of a full Japanese kitchen with two dedicated sushi chefs.

For some reason, due to the name, I thought that this Willoughby's was one and the same as the original in Cape Town (V&A Waterfront), but there is actually absolutely no affiliation except that this Johannesburg restaurant has the same name and cuisine.

Everything from my seared tuna salad to the 4x4 rolls were plated well and our sushi was good.

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

Last week I attended a lunch that I was invited to at Willoughby & Co. in Hyde Park. Willoughby & Co. is a seafood restaurant based in Hyde Park Corner shopping centre. The restaurant serves traditional simple, genuine and authentic seafood dishes as well as the more prevalent Japanese style sushi.

Unfortunately a bad experience all round. Whilst the waiter was nice and tried his best, the food was disappointing. My wife's meal was incorrect and my meal was cold and too oily. Based on our experience this time the establishment doesn't justify its reputation and pricing.
Zahraa Cachalia
Classic restaurant, perfect for lunch or dinners.
Had some really lovely Sushi here, although was disappointed with the tempura prawn.
They were over battered and had a bad after taste.
Makes the mall experience a worthwhile one . Tucked away at the end of a corridor it does not have a mall vibe at all. Sushi excellent . Crab salad inspired me to try my own version at home.

We had not been to Willoughbys for a while due to a previous not so good experience. This time however the standard we had been used to was on show again. The atmosphere is always good and never a problem finding a table without having to book. We only ever have sushi at Willoughbys so cannot comment on their other meals. We started with the 8 piece deep fried prawn rolls that were delicious followed by Sushi combi 2 that has rock shrimp tempura rolls, rainbow rolls reloaded, sashimi and salmon roses total 14 pieces. It was all delicious and very fresh. All in all highly recommended.
Dalene Cronje
They do serve excellent sushi. We love the Cape Town branch, it's more open, this branch does feel like it is stuffed into a corner. Excellent service
Lucian
Been to Willoughby a while back. It was recommended by a friend of mine and decided to make a turn. Service was good. Sushi expensive, but wow, it was good. Had my usual salmon sashimi, fashion sandwiches and roses.
Yum yum!

We just had sushi at an oldie but super goodie. Willoughby & Co in Hyde Park Corner. Fresh fish & perfectly sized portions. They no longer charge for corkage. You can also buy fish from them. Decor / seating refurbished since my last visit. I'm glad to see that a trusted Sunday pm blues beating establishment is still going strong.
Bridget Meyer
Willoughby&Co in Hyde Park is always a great choice to grab a quick bite of sushi whilst doing your shopping. I did exactly that for lunch and was greatly satisfied with the freshness of the salmon and the efficiency of the service. All washed down with a crisp white from their good wine selection :)
Middleclassconcerns
Not a fan of mall restaurants but Willoughby's in Hyde Park Corner is an exception. It's my moms favourite for fish and fresh seasonal veggies and slowly becoming mine. Ask for a side table for some privacy while chomping away at the giant wedges. Service is top tier.
Zandi Phoshoko
Consistently great food. One of my favourite seafood spots. Sushi is superb, always fresh! Fantastic service & friendly staff. Highly recommended!
Andrew King
Beyond average food at very high prices. Lovely service though ! Sushi was the winning dish but the rest , from prawn curry, calamari and sole was ordinary.
Vinodhan Selvarajalu
We've been here several times before and never been disappointed, so I'm upping the score a bit to reflect that average. However this last visit left me less than satisfied. Perhaps I shouldn't expect too much when ordering meat from a seafood specialist, but if you have it on the menu....

I ordered the grilled lamb chops, primarily because they interestingly are served with a salsa verde. When the chops arrived sans the salsa, I immediately pointed it out to the waiter. He promptly went back to the kitchen and came back with some tomato salsa...Not the salsa verde advertised nor something I would look forward to eating with lamb chops. I shrugged it off, disappointed but not wanting to delay my meal further. Moving onto the chops themselves I found pretty quickly that they were neither the medium-well I ordered nor at all consistent between the three chops; they changed from medium-rare to medium at best. They tasted pretty good (the bits I could eat) but I couldn't finish them and couldn't help but feel frustrated by the inconsistency in their cooking.

We will likely return; hopefully a better experience can be looked forward to next time.

Prawn curry - good flavor, but a few more crustaceans wouldn't be missed... Lobster linguine - presented in the shell wows with presentation, but slightly falls flat on flavour... Will be back sometime for English F&Cs, though...
I always enjoy the deep fried squid heads 👌🏻

Absolutely loved this restaurant, no corkage charged too which is an absolute bonus, we had a Greek salad with feta to die for and I had Portuguese sardines which I am definitely coming back for again. My two girlfriends loved their sushi, a winner restaurant with excellent service

We visited late on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch. We really enjoyed the Sushi at Willoughby & Co which we had as a starter. We had a light meal, "Mussel and Clam Stew" which was tasty and the English Style Fish was really good. Service and Meal was good.
Christina Maria
A consistent restaurant with consistent food and service. The sushi is fresh and appetizing. The food is beautifully presented. All the waiters are so friendly and helpful . I would recommend this restaurant for the freshest sushi in town .
Dominique
This Restaurant is always a welcoming, friendly, warm experience. The staff are sharp and attentive. The food is amazing. Especially the sushi. The decor is trendy and elegant. On my Top 5 Restaurants I love to visit on a Regular. You must try it!!!!!
Gaby
Willoughbys service was exceptional I loved how fresh the Kingklip was and my friend really enjoyed the sushi. I would recommend this restruant to anyone !

Best sushi ever! I am a sushi fan, and this place is phenomenal. Pleasant atmosphere to catch up with friends, meet with colleagues and have family functions. The location within Hydepark is perfect as its situated near an entrance and reasonable near to the restrooms. Staff are accommodating and work hard to get your drinks and food out to you asap. But still what keeps me going back to Willoughbys is the best, freshest and beautifully put together sushi I have ever had.
Amy Harrington-Johnson
We are big fans of Willoughby's Cape Town, and the JHB version is somewhat of a disappoint. We popped in for a relaxed dinner and had reasonable starters, but ordered the 4 x 4, which is Willoughby's CT's most popular dish, and the tempura prawns were complete mush. We informed the manager as we were concerned that they were off, only to be told that they defrosted the prawns, and they often get burnt in the freezer??? Very pricey for prawns which are frozen. Very disappointing.
Glenn Muller
While seriously lacking the vibe of its Cape Town, V&A counterpart (must be our laidback nature down here with the sea and mountains😤), the sushi is still unbelievably good. Enjoyed the 4x4 and some fusion fashion sandwiches which was super fresh and beautifully presented. Service was very good too. Now, just to get these Joburgers to relax...saw a couple of customers munching away with their laptops open ...come on guys, live in the moment😆
Jess Grobler
We popped here on Saturday evening after spending all day snacking on the couch. Didn't have a massive appetite but decided to see if Hyde Park could compare to Cape Town - I was really impressed - sushi was just like the V&A and service was quick! Will be back on an empty stomach.

Used to be one of our favorites however definitely not what it used to be... We enjoy the sushi however the fish has been quite dry. Need to try it again as its been a while!!
The SA Food Guru
This is the go to place for fish, seafood and sushi in Hyde Park. They've been trading for a long time, and have a loyal clientele - so it gets rather busy for dinner over weekends.

The menu has many delectable items to choose from. I've dined here so many times over the years, and they have the best seafood Tom yum soup in Johannesburg. The sushi and fresh line fish is right up there as well.

I recently had the lobster, and I felt it was a tad over cooked.

The interior has a huge white marble bar counter, with black and white floor tiles which makes a dramatic statement.

Service has always been efficient and I can't recall any bad experiences.
Enrico Ferigolli
I used to come to this place every week. Good sushi at fair prices.
Now price have increased drastically with platters going from 190 to 280. Never again

June 2016:
A craving for the oyster po'boy led us to return. Alas, it's no longer on the menu.

We started with sushi, the 4x4, which was actually worse than last time - the soggy nori made it difficult to eat. The tempura on the prawns was terrible; once removed, the prawns were juicy and delicious.

The sardines were missing the typical sardine flavour, instead having an edge of bitterness. The tacos were terrible - the fish and oysters/mussels were wrapped in that same terrible tempura, and removing them revealed how little fish was actually provided, and except for the salsa topping, it was also terribly dry; the diner shouldn't be expected to take apart a dish and reassemble it to make it palatable.

PREVIOUS REVIEW (RATING: 3):
The sushi was quite disappointing. We started with the 4x4, and both rolls had the wet nori wrapped all the way through, which resulted in the pieces being unpleasantly chewy.

The oyster po'boy was pulled from greatness by the terrible choice of bread, with was too crispy and awkward for a sandwich. The seafood, sauce and chips were all great though. The seafood pasta had good seafood, but the pasta sauce was bland and underseasoned.
Cleo
Endamane beans starters are excellent - salted and dunked in soya. I had the Thai Spiced Seafood soup as a main/ asked for it to be mild and it was delicious. My kids had fashion sandwich avo, crab and cucumber sushi platters which they polished off. Husband ordered kabeljou line-fish. Good food, service and atmosphere plus easy walk-in on a Saturday eve without a reservation.
I_kalchev
Great sushi and seafood. The sushi portions were huge twice the size my wife was expecting. The Tuna Salad Nicoise was exceptional . Langoustines were really fresh and well cooked.
KarmaZebra
Outstanding meal! We were a table of 6 ordering a variety of dishes from the Fresh Fish of the Day with Salad to the Succulent Steak with Crispy Chips ; and there were 6 very happy tummies! My 85 year old grandmother even swore that her Sole & Edamame Beans were "the best she'd had in her entire life" (although admittedly she couldn't remember every piece of sole her tastebuds had encountered, and I think this may have been her first encounter of the quirky Asian veg). I had meaty yet delicate langoustines and loved that I could order something that I couldn't just make at home!
The service was 5 star with all food arriving timeously, glasses staying topped up with water & wine and all diners feeling cared about.
Unfortunately, as seems to be the trend in this elite shopping complex, food this delicious does come with a price tag and at about R300 a head for mains & wine only it has to be a "for special occasions only" venue for me.
Marcelle Bolus
Very disappointed with this place. The sides are charged for - not included in main course. The service was bad. They made us feel as though we were imposing on their time. No bread was placed on our table. We had to ask. I had calamari and it was tough. And it was expensive for what we got.
Dips Naik
I had an early dinner here with a sashimi starter and a linefish papillote as main course. It was pleasant and the staff were friendly. I have enjoyed the meal.
HungryDiner2.0
We have visited the one at Cape Town a number of times and loved it. Every single visit. Imagine our delight when we noted one in JHB.

Awesome menu as always. The sushi is just Devine you can never go wrong. The service was adequate brought us the wrong wine to start of with lol. But after that everything was on point. Will be returning again.

Only down point is they are right next to the parking but food makes up for it.
Natalie Anderson
Have been going to Willoughby for years. Food and service has always been good. Went last night to find that now you have to pay for your side orders which was always previously part of what you pay for i.e. Chips, rice, salad or veg. I think this is a bit of a rip off!!!! Now you get a piece of fish on its own and have to pay for your chips!
Manfred Mullers
My wife and I have been loyal customers since they first started to serve food at tables. Can't remember how many years ago.We have come to enjoy the food ...occasionally as many times as three times per week.It saddens me to say that over the last few month we have been disappointed several times.Today the food served was especially badly prepared to say the least. There is no longer the consistency of the quality of food served which made us return over so many years.I have experienced that the management does not have the competence to deal with customers dissatisfaction.I have spoken to management several times recently ..to no avail. The quantity and quality has decreased but the prices have increased several times recently. It is rather unfortunate ...but we will not return.
SalSal
The best sushi in Joburg by far!! We regularly splash out and order their prawn tempura hand rolls, salmon sashimi and California rolls as a take away. The sushi is always fresh and delicious even though it is a bit pricey. Service is always friendly and good!
J L
The edemame may be furrier than my chest, but the sushi is always a winner. Simply delicious - the rice is fresh and the fish tastes like it's just been caught. Well worth a visit.
Shaun Le Feuvre
Willoughby & Co just never disappoints no matter what you order. I love their sushi and it is my firm Sunday night favourite. Your requests are never to much to ask. You can even order items not on the menu that used to be like their fish curry and they happily oblige.
Stoil Michaylov
Just awesome, the miso soup was perfect and the sushi spot on. The only thing was the waiter wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Will definitely go back there.
Dino
I've always enjoyed Willoughby for their great seafood and sushi. The service is always excellent as most of the waiters have been there for ages.
Last night's sushi wasn't as good as it usually is, but I can't judge them badly based on one bad show, as it's usually excellent. The fish was super fresh, as always, my only complaint was that the rice was a bit stodgy and the nigiri portions were a bit big, I prefer them to be bite sized and not a full mouthful. Willoughby is still one of my top seafood and sushi restaurants in Joburg and I highly recommend it.
Bronwills
Willoughby's is a well-known sushi and fish spot that I have visited a few times over the years and I have yet to be blown away. The food is usually above average and the service is good. It is pricey and not a budget meal kind of place. The decor is good, they have recently redone it and adds a nice feel to the experience. I had a quick bite of sushi there last night and was quite disappointed - the food took a while to get to the table, despite being a quiet Sunday evening service, and the sushi rice was very stodgy and sticky which is unpleasant, especially when it constitutes 70% of the meal! Perhaps it was a bad batch, but it should not have been served to customers, I didn't finish my small portion of sushi because of it.
Linda Meyer
Not my favorite. The food and service - nothing special, and there are much better choices in Hyde Park. Admittedly the place is always busy.
Lorna Somers
We returned to what was one of our favourite restaurants last night and were bitterly disappointed. They have changed there menu and prices have increased substantially. The grilled calamari was bland as was the mussel pot. The salmon sushi had bones in it and we were short changed the menu described 6 pieces we only received 4 -apparently new portion size. Service was seriously sliw and no manager in site which was unusual based on our previous experiences. We won't be back!
Leigh Dermick
Was pleasantly surprised by my last visit. They have a new menu, new decor and the food was delicious! I had a calamari salad which was really good, sushi to start and rest of table all enjoyed their meals. The waiter was super attentive (without being over bearing) and even brought the table glasses of water without us asking... most other places if you do ask it takes forever.
keep up the good work guys!
Nadir Olgacay
I repeat it's not the branch of Willoughby in Cape town. Dont
Elle
We come here during our lunch hour quite often and service is fast and perfect. Our every request including our own made up sushi is executed to perfection. Delicious food and cool comfy decor.
Lisa
I first found Willoughby & Co in Cape Town, absolutely love it. But the JHB branch is way below the level of CT. So disappointed! Will only eat at the CT branch
Darryl W
This is still a really good fish & sushi joint. Used to be the busiest eatery in Hyde Park but seems to have list its mojo - no more waiting in line to get a place. I still like my Cajun line fish & chips.
Georgina Katz
Wasn't particularly amazed by the sushi at Willoughby's tonight. The rice was luke warm and the sashimi looked as if it had been cut with an axe. The handrolls were way too packed with rice and made it difficult to enjoy. The salmon and tuna itself was unbelievably good and the service wasn't bad either- until we realised that all the guests receive freshly baked rolls upon being seated and our table didn't get this service
Bronwynne W
Since we last came to Willoughby, the service has dropped dramatically. The waiter forgot to offer us house bread, our sushi starter arrived at the same time as our mains. We sent the mains back but when it did arrive when we had finished with starters, my husbands rice was hard & dry after standing under the warmer. So he sent it back and complained to the manager. Little things like being brought a drink but no glass, then having to remind the waiter to bring the glass. Just very disappointed. Overall the food is fantastic. Service let them down.
Tracy Morison
This is the best sushi I have had in Jozi. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for. They have other dishes on the menu, but we always go for the sushi. Ambiance not too bad, considering it's in a mall, and service is good. Definitely go for a little treat.
Spruceblog
Had to be, still, the best sushi in town. Despite numerous visits here in the past, Have yet to try anything besides the sushi (although it looks delicious). Everything we ordered last night was lovely - even the falling apart salmon roses. And yes, it's in a shopping centre but with fantastic sushi and slick service, it's quickly forgotten.
Bridget
After being away from Willoughby's for a while, we had dinner there the other evening. I had my favourite sushi, and am happy to say that it was delicious as ever (my previous experience had been disappointing). The fish and chips eaten by the boyfriend was good but not great. I hope that they can get back to their previous glory days, when the queues were a given, and it was the best fish shop in town...
Cheryl Pincus
Really not great. The fish was absolutely tasteless, the potatoes wedges were raw and not edible. On the other hand the starters were great.
Wayne Samson
The worst fish I've ever had. No taste. When complaining the manager saw it as a joke. Won't go back. Others had potatoes that were hard. Service slow

I always fail to understand why so many things change at a restaurant when there are new owners, especially if nothing was wrong in the first place. If it aint broke, don’t fix it! I recently learned that this restaurant had new owners. It is amazing how quickly one can realise that something is different about a place, suddenly for the first time in 10 years I am waiting and waiting and waiting for my food. Suddenly in 10 years the food is inferior. I was a frequent visitor of this restaurant, I use the word ‘was’ because I will not be going there again. I ordered my usual, mussels. I waited 40 minutes. In fact we ordered 3 dishes, the one came within 10 minutes of ordering, the 2nd one 30 minutes later and the 3rd one 40 minutes later. Usually we get our food within the first 15 minutes as it is seafood and we all know it cooks in minutes. Hence to say we could not enjoy lunch as a family because everyone basically ate on their own. Never have I experienced this bad service at this restaurant and I will definitely not be back. Upon complaining the new ‘manager’ did not seem to understand what I was complaining about and all I got was her annoying little smile and a lame excuse. She basically blamed the waiter which I didn’t really believe that it was his fault as I also learned that they had a new cook not just new owners and a new manager. I am giving this restaurant a big fat ZERO
Slavic Warrior Princess
Was definitely not blown away. Will be honest, I had high expectations from the Waterfront, and Willoughby & Co Hyde Park did not compare to Cape Town at all... Food was average, ambiance was average, service wasn't great either. It was a bit disappointing as I was very excited for the famous Willoughby & Co sushi that I had in Cape Town. Will maybe stop by there again in the future, but not likely.
James Hickman
It is ok, nothing wrong with the place but I was comparing it against its namesake in Cape Town. Unfortunately it is not comparable. All aspects of the restaurant are different from the vibe to the food to the services etc etc.

The meal was what you would expect for the price you pay but it was not exceptional. For me this place falls into the category that so many of JHBs restaurants do which is just boring. There is nothing that they offer that differentiates them from any other restaurant.

Would I eat there again if I was hungry and was walking past, absolutely! Would I get in my car and drive there for a meal, probably not.
Marc Schmidt
26 Dec 15 - My reviews below have been eclipsed by my latest one. --- 26 Dec 15 - I have been a regular customer for many many many years but something is not the same anymore. For example, they have raised the price of a prawn curry to R195. This, in my opinion, is total explotation. For the same price I had a 4 course tasting platter with a paired wine tasting at The Green Peppercorn, a considerably better restaurant.
This restaurant has lost a regular customer in that I'll never go back!!

When the waiters make a special place for ones pram at the table, you know you at the right place.
We received a friendly warm welcome from helpful staff. The tables are in the corridor, which gives you space to breathe & people watch. Lol
I had a prawn curry and all I can say is, brilliant! Absolutely excellent. Spicy, flavourful, piquant, creamy & delicious. Money well spent.
My wife had the grilled hake & absolutely loved it.
The food is brilliant. The service wonderful & the setting enjoyable & very pleasant.
We had a fantastic late lunch while shopping up a storm.

24 Aug 14 - They make the best Prawn Curry in Gauteng. No doubt about it. Awesome.
Christine M
BEST sushi in town!! Without a doubt. Willoughby's sushi is fantastic, and its quality is spot on every time. Ordering sushi take-out is one of my firm favourites on a Friday night, especially with the current Joburg chill. I would definitely recommend their rock shrimp tempura roll... delicious and great for sharing. Their rainbow rolls, Philadelphia roll and tempura prawn rolls are also fantastic.
Chloe
Best sushi you can get being so far away from the sea! I highly recommend their salmon roses and soft shell crab hand rolls, with a fabulous haloumi salad to start. You really will not fresher or better prepared sushi in all of Johannesburg (and believe me, I've looked). A must!
Hungry Man
Have been visiting this restaurant for many years now and have never had a bad meal or negative feedback from friends or family if you enjoy a Gr8 prawn curry this is the place for you service is generally good and not over the top sushi always good to and nice selection of wines.
Borrow Me Your Teeth
Best sushi in town by far!!! This is the only place that make their sushi rice the correct way.
Zoe Lansdell
Willoughby's sushi is really quite nice, it's a little more expensive than I usually like to pay for sushi as I have found some very affordable delicious spots in Joburg, but when you're in Hyde Park you kind of expect everything to be a little bit more expensive. It's not going to break the bank but still. The atmosphere is okay, nothing special but the staff were very friendly and made sure I was looked after. I wouldn't mind giving Willoughby another go if I'm in the area.
Nafisa Akabor
I visited the Willoughby yesterday with flu-like symptoms. The waiter gave me a spot next to the heater, and the manager provided me with a WiFi password, so I was very comfortable. I ordered sushi and their spicy seafood soup. The soup was sour, hot and spicy - just what I needed for the way I was feeling. Service was good, and nobody seemed to mind that I stayed a bit longer after finishing my meal. Really great service, and I'll definitely return for the soup.
Candice Buitendach
The most beautiful sushi you will ever eat. Quality through and through. Was also treated to a bottle of veuve so all and all a delicious evening. I just wish it wasn't in a mall!
Mike R
This used to be THE spot for fish in Joburgs north, sadly it appears to be somewhat in decline. No sole available, no Mozambique prawns either. The replacement prawns were nothing special at all and the squid head starter a measly portion bulked up with lots of rice (oldest trick in the book). On the plus side their jumbo cut chips are still excellent and though a very small cut, the kingklip was good.
Kalia Christos
This is our favorite place for sushi and we are so pleased that they now do more of they CT menu. Service is always excellent and staff always very professional. The fish and chips I'd also amazing the batter comes out perfect every time.

This is my go-to place for Sushi when I'm in the Hyde Park area.
Their sushi is fresh and quite delicious.
Customer service is excellent and the waiters are friendly.
Everything on the menu is reasonably priced and as expected for sushi.
There are various seating options available - and what I like about Willoughby's is that it's quite close to the parking lot, so one can just pop in for a bite without having to trudge through the mall.
