Review Silver Teaspoon - Johannesburg

Lovely gem, a momentary escape from the hubub of the city into a happy little piece of the past. Went with the plan to have a scone and stayed for so much more. Beautiful space matched by beautiful food. Lovely friendly staff and thoughtful decor. Can't wait to return to try the high tea!

Beautiful area inside the premises. Seating inside and outside in the garden. Service very good. Friendly staff. Relaxing under a large Palm tree with my super yummy coffee milkshake! And having some savoury pancake. Wow. Defintely recommend this place.
Brigitte Brooks
Elegant cafe with quaint & quirky decor. Well priced with hearty portions & home cooked style fresh meals. Lovely colourful salads. Great for Sunday lunch, high tea or baby shower / kitchen tea venue. Cute retreat in the heart of Northcliff, away from the hustle and bustle.

Absolutely delightful experience. We Took my four year old for her first high tea experience and absolutely loved it. The dining rooms are cozy with Victorian style decor mixed in with a little quirkiness. Service was very attentive and treats were overwhelmingly delicious, we had to take most of the sweet stuff home.

We had an awesome afternoon sitting in the lovely garden under a tree. My curry chicken pancake was delusions. The restaurant has a lot of interesting decor.
Karl Muller
Wonderful venue for high tea. We sat in a quaint Victoria themed tea room. The crockery was vintage bone china from England. The food was delicious and bounty. Far too much in fact. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful setting. Lovely garden and decor. French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup delicious, as was the banting toasted chicken mayo.
Rya-Mari Muller
Choose between tables for inside or in the garden while you enjoy something to eat or drink. There is secure parking available Service is fairly relaxed so ensure you have sufficient time.

So quaint, delicious food, well priced & lovely atmosphere.

The most amazing caring people run that place. And it is just filled with happiness and yummyness it’s a lovely place to escape the crazy busyness around us

We had a wonderful afternoon at your stunning Cafe. All in all an outstanding experience, delicious food, served with love in the most delightful surroundings. A special thank you to the incredible chef Francois and the lovely staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the high tea/ highly recommended! We definitely come back! Thanks

I had the best most memorable birthday at The Silver Teaspoon. I felt like a VIP guest. At such a reasonable rate, we got to spend quality time as ladies together. What a beautiful place, private and totally away from your norm shopping malls. If I have a choice to do it over, I will choose The Silver Teaspoon. Also a special thanks to Judy for going the extra mile in making this day so so special. A big thanks to the phenomenal staff for treating my guests and myself with such excellence.

Spent a good morning at The Silver Spoon for a birthday tea. Just love this place... tranquil, beautiful interior and very good food!

Was my surprise birthday breakfast. The food was great and the staff so helpful. They decorated it and it looked fantastic. People who hadn't been there before were blown away. Think they've got a few more customers.
Jessica Dreyer
Beautiful setting. The morning was crisp but I decided to have my coffee and scones on the veranda while I enjoy reading my book. The scones freshly and and so yummy. The macchiato was strong warm and warmed the bones. Will be back

Amazing venue for all your events - they go above and beyond in making sure it's extra special! Stunning venue with good food and great service. Highly recommend!

What a pretty little spot. They did not have electricity when we went, but the owner was so sweet and accomdating. Best scones and tea I have ever had! Can't wait to go back for the High Tea

I hosted my sister's kitchen tea the venue, the owners were friendly, the service was on point, and the Decor was absolutely perfect fit to the theme :) great experience and have already recommended to some of my tea loving friends. looking forward to our next visit there soon :)

What a beautiful place,I love how cozy and intimate it is, the staff is friendly, it's easy to find and the food is delicious....loved every minute of it.

I have been wanting to go here for ages! Walking into venue was amazing, beautifully decorated vintage tables. Thats were it ended. We stood waiting for several minutes for a someone to let us know where we could sit, as all the empty tables looked reserved for a function. After looking around the entire venue and still no staff, we started walking towards gate. We then were asked by a 'waitress' if we need help (for all the attention to detail, wasnt sure who were the staff, no distinct uniform). We were seated at only table available in the full sun. When it came to ordering, every cake I asked for was finished. We had mediocre coffee and left feeling rather disappointed. I dont think I will be back.

Such a special mothersday high tea! We enjoyed all the food and the atmosphere. My mom absolutely loved every moment.

It was to die for everything was good..decor, service, and the food was really good

We waited quite a while for added Seattle no as we were more than we booked for. Above that, we waited over an hour for the cold food and experienced poor service but were forced to pay a 15% service fee as it was included in the bill. Not cool.

Visited the Silver teaspoon for a high tea and it was amazing. Delightful morsels of sweets and savouries with a never ending supply of tea and coffee. The waitress who served us however was not very attentive and we had to repeatedly call for service. Overall though great value for money and the food was amazing.
Ranminik
Poor service - very slow; weak, dilute coffee and tasteless food prepared by an untrained chef. Advertised as a Victorian teahouse but service and food have no finesse. Not going back.
Rakhee Singh
Visited this restaurant with a group of 20 ladies for a high tea. They decorated our tables superbly according to the theme requested- incorporating all the tiniest of details. The crockery is so pretty and takes you back in time , to a bygone era. The weather was beautiful and our tables were laid outside. A wide selection of enticing pastries , sandwiches , cupcakes & tarts were set out next to our table. We were each served a delicious soup to start with. They did go to great lengths to accommodate my vegetarian dietary request. With all the great food, friendly service , beautiful surroundings and wonderful conversation, this was a really enjoyable afternoon.

We had high tea for my daughter’s 21st. Reading the previous reviews I felt a bit worried that our event for 40 people would not go as well as we had hoped.<br/><br/>I can say the reviews are wrong and The Silver Teaspoon is an amazing venue. Great food, awesome venue with stunning little trinkets.<br/><br/>I would honestly go back.<br/><br/>Thanks Nikki and staff for making our day great
Suhasini Manuel
My visit to this place...The venue is beautiful, beautiful garden, takes you back to the Victorian era of high tea. But the menu was a little disappointing with a limited option of food and when I got my food, it was cold.
Carole Craggs
The Silver Teaspoon is a lovely tea room in Northcliff. Everything is delightfully quaint, exactly what one would expect from a tea room. Definitely a pleasant venue for a spot of tea and cake.

Had a really enjoyable high tea at The Silver Teaspoon. The food tasted amazing and was presented in such a beautiful way. Everyone there was extremely friendly and helpful. The ambience was so peaceful. It was amazing to have tea in their antique cups. I would recommend this place to anyone.

I'm sorry to say but this was the most disappointing experience I have had in a long time. When we arrived it seemed promising, a nice venue, very pleasant with the tables situated in a beautiful garden but that's all this place has going for it. I ordered a caffe latte and what came was a cup filled a quarter of the way with what seemed like nespresso machine coffee. But then the food came and it was, and I'm sorry to be this blunt...HORRIBLE...the mince inside the pancake was worse than pet mince, it was pure fat and boiled minced meat with tinned mixed veg. I ordered a "chicken, Peppadew mushroom" quiche. But what was served was a muffin pan egg cup with some, and by "some" I mean almost no filling. Our bill came to R350 for the food. I sincerely hope the owners can turn the quality of the food around as they seem like really nice, geniune people.

Vintage decor, fabulous food, lovely shops to browse through ... pity they don't have enough on-site parking.<br/><br/>Situated in a lovely old house.  I absolutely ADORE the decor!!!  The lampshades are exquisite!  The side plates are all different, the mugs are all different patterns and the colored crystals in the sugar bowl ...  Books on the table, tied with a ribbon and topped with a string of 'pearls' ... out of this world.  Water glasses look like crystal and wine glasses are lovely.<br/><br/>There's a patio with tables under umbrellas, a small patio undercover with tables, some tables in the garden, the one room where we were seated with glass doors opened to both patios and a separate room for private parties, painted in moss green.<br/><br/>The ladies' bathroom - fabulous!!  Old vintage underwear artfully displayed, black lace curtains in front of the windows and the best part ... the top of the toilet cistern has these broken cups and saucers 'mosaic ed' ... absolutely fantastic!!!<br/><br/>Service was at times a little slow, but overall very good.  I had a looooooong look at the dessert table but unfortunately was very brave.  heehee.  A Banting cheesecake  looked fantastic!  With a nut crust and coconut flour in the filling.  A meringue pecan pie ... I should have bought a piece!<br/><br/>Breakfast is served throughout the day.  The Silver Teaspoon breakfast was ordered by 2 ladies ... and that cheese scone served with butter and strawberry jam looked amazing!!!!!!  Crispy on the outside!<br/><br/>I had the Mediterranean Scone ... a deeeevine crispy outside yum inside scone, one topped with crushed Sundried tomatoes and one topped with Basil Pesto, served with 2 eggs.  It was absolutely sooo my style of food!!!!!!!  It will be real hard to choose anything else!<br/><br/>One lady had the Banting Tuna Tart ... it actually looked like a sandwich, but was Tuna Tart without crust.  A Chicken Quiche without crust as well as a Roasted vegetable salad was ordered and looked real good.  A baked cheesecake was served with ice cream and cherry sauce.  The Traditional English breakfast came with bread and pork sausage.<br/><br/>They don't have a liquor license, so you're welcome to bring your own wines.

Probably the worst breakfast experience I've had in recent memory. Drinks took 20minutes to be served. Food took 1 hour 30 minutes to be served. I ordered a double espresso and received a full teacup of what could only be 'filter coffee'. I ordered 3 scrambled eggs with NO Toast and received the plate of food attached; not sure if quail eggs were used but this was NOT 3 eggs and somehow I still received two slices of toast. The waiter accidentally knocked over my 'filter coffee' (accidents happen) and I was offered a replacement drink. I opted for a SINGLE espresso in the hope of receiving an ACTUAL espresso but I think I dream too big sometime; another FULL tea cup of filter coffee was delivered. We were a table of 8, including kids and there was something wrong with every other meal ordered. We received a very reluctant apology & excuse of a larger table being served first as part of the hour and a half delay. To top it off we attempted a breakfast here the day before and arrived at 9:45am to a closed gate/door and were turned away due to a 'function' that was pre-booked despite no signs being up and that the restaurant being open to the public from 8am. Will not be back anytime soon. I

Such a gorgeous place, so pretty and good food as well. The gardens and house are a visual delight! The table decorations are lovely and clever too.

What an absolutely stunning tea room! The decor and setting is stunning, the services is great and everyone greets you with a smile. I've had the breakfast which was devine, they use such fresh ingredients and then finally the cake- WOW!!! Their cheese cake is the best I've had and a delicious coffee to compliment it was superb. I can't help but love this little place that takes you back in time.

What a beautiful garden setting this place is in, and the idea of a Victorian tea room is a pretty original one in Joburg. It's so hard to find a picturesque place where you can eat in the garden in this city, so we really wanted to love our meal. Sadly though, the great location, quaint decor and relaxed vibe only compounded our disappointment at the extremely poor food.<br/><br/>An average and tiny crustless quiche, bad homemade lemonade, really, really bad homemade ginger beer and brownies sold to us as chocolate cake all weren't ideal, but it was the gammon pie, a watery, congealed mess underneath underdone puff pastry that really made us wonder who hurt the chef. The food is also substantially overpriced for what it is.<br/><br/>I hope the chef is just going through a rough patch or that the Silver Teaspoon gets a new one so that they can capitalize on their fantastic location.
Vanashree Pillay
A very pretty setting, food was bland however and billing was incorrect to the point of our party having to pay extra as the waitress was not able to calculate correctly. Further to that they charge a 25% service fee off the bat. Really not worth it in my books.

Lovely place to pause and take a break from your daily rushing through life! I absolutely love the vintage porcelain they serve the drinks and meals in. Their scones are absolutely to die for!
Karin D'Orville
A rather tarnished Silver Teaspoon ... I had to ask a waitress for menus. At 13h00 on a weekday, 3 of the 4 items we ordered off the rather limited menu, were out of stock. The milkshake was good ... and at 13h45 the waitresses very much created the impression that they couldn't wait to close shop.

The decor is quaint and vintage and the food delicious<br/><br/>You do need to book for high tea but it's worth the phone call<br/><br/>A perfect place for the girls to have tea <br/>Ask to be seated in the garden

Just before the dreaded return to university, we decided to have a little get together, and it so happened, that The Silver Teaspoon was the destinaton of choice. It is set in a very beautiful garden that almost takes yu away from the city and surroundings. The tables and chairs all look so inviting, covered in floral table cloths and cushions to match. <br/>The food hadn't been what I was expeting, it was a little bit disappointing. I got the quiche (which does come in a banting option, which is obviously crustless), and it was rather average. I didn't even finish it (and it wasn't very big either). The chips on the other hand were nice, they had a good crunch and the seasoning was just right. <br/>The pancakes were alot better than the quiche. And the cheese sauce went just about everywhere. <br/><br/>The Salted caramel hot chocolate was very messy - its one of those chocolate sticks that you have to put into the heated milk and stir it until it melts... Well, the cup was so full of milk that when you added the chocolate it just toppled over the mug and messed everywhere. But it was still delicious, and probably a highlight of the day.<br/>It is definitely a lovely place to go for a ladies day, or just to get away from all the city noise. And I am very sure we will be back again, and trying something different on the menu.

Possibly the best below average breakfast in long long time. Long wait, coffees for 6 served one at a time, food so-so. Parking lot drab, dangling broken light at steps; immediate impression is one of poor management.
G Makan
Beautiful setting... This gem of a place is simply perfect for a relaxing afternoon out or any special occasion such as a baby shower, bridal shower or even a ladies afternoon high tea gathering. The attention to detail is immaculate and the presentation of the treats are truly well considered. I enjoyed my experience throughly and would recommend the silver teaspoon for an afternoon high tea...

Can't recommend the high tea highly enough! Although one does need to order two days in advance, it is well worth it. The range of food was as diverse - from scones, a small cup of delicious soup, macaroons and delectable brownies to small toasted sandwiches - as it was fresh and delicate. The atmosphere is decidedly feminine and Victorian, with special crockery and careful decoration, drawing in groups for birthday parties and other special occasions in a tranquil garden setting with a laid-back atmosphere but attentive service. Pies and other fare being served around us looked well worth a return trip.

I absolutely adore this place. The scones are amazing and oh how I do love a good scone with tea. Recently I enjoyed their peanut butter hot chocolate , what comfort during this winter season. If you looking for a place to have a quite moment, a bite and a great cup of tea, this is the place. Food can take a lil long to prepare and if it was not for this I would give a higher rating but if you are in no rush it's perfect.
Jonathan Houston
A lovely hidden away Victorian tea garden for a lazy lunch or Sunday tea. Love the decor and the feel of the place. Makes you feel far out of Joburg even though Cresta is literally a stone's throw away.

Had a lovely Sunday breakfast at The Silver Teaspoon! Food was good & the atmosphere was so charming - to feel like I'm in the English countryside but in reality I'm in Johannesburg. Beautiful setting, lovely morning

If this restuarant were human it would be a grey haired matron, elbow deep in dough surrounded by tea drinking friends and labradors. It's a place with character and the food is made with love and care.<br/><br/>It took a bit of time for breakfast to be served but we had good coffee and when the food did arrive it was worth the wait.<br/><br/>Bacon and mushroom pancake topped with a cheese sauce -perfect winter food.<br/>The eggs and pork sausage were cooked to perfection and the toast was crispy, just how we like it.<br/><br/>I would recommend this place to those who shy away from franchise outlets and food on the go. Take time to enjoy the venue and the food, it's a winning combination.

We tried out this restaurant for the first time. The waitress used our place mats to wipe our table and then put them back on our table to rest our drinks. Gross!

Awesome little find. Very feminine. Perfect for showers and they also do high tea. They also cater for any palette being vegetarian or Banting. Would def go back.

A lovely venue and always a pleasure to visit. Love being able to sit outside and enjoy the great food. Can also highly recommend their private functions. Had a great bridal shower high tea a while back.

A colleague and I discovered this adorable little tea house when we were hankering for scones one rainy day. <br/>It's now become a regular place to escape the office. <br/>Delicious home made scones, preserves and cream are what makes me come back for more. The cappuccino is slightly weak, but drinkable. <br/><br/>The decor is delightfully quaint. Authentic tea cups and plates and silverware are everywhere. The big house is divided into 2 main areas to enjoy tea as well a lovely terrace for when the weather is better. <br/>There is an equestrian themed private room that seats 8-12 people and is perfect for an informal staff meeting or private party. <br/><br/>If you book in advance you can enjoy the afternoon tea or else order off the lunch menu or enjoy some freshly made cake or tarts.

So the day started off with scones and tea (I had coffee). Then followed with a sweet creamy tomato soup, witch was absolutely delicious. This delight was followed by AMAZING TREATS!! Cupcakes, Leamingtons, and savory treats such as tiny spring rolls and beef carpaccio open sandwichs with a fantastic onion marmalade. Simply the best high tea I have ever been to. Thank you I will be back with more people I swear it.
Jaime The Jambo
Such an unbelievably BEAUTIFUL venue. This was a special day, as we took my mom-in-law to a high tea, especially hosted for Mother's Day. The crockery was all mismatched china, as well as the cutlery. This little gem is a sweet almost Alice in Wonderland type place, with little nooks and crannies all over and the decor matches just that with old ladies hats and frames. Just beautiful. Now for the food, absolutely fabulous. Their baked treats are so fresh, soft and fluffy you can't help to have two or three. There were sticky finger foods, sandwiches... the works amd the tea was FLOWING. This place is amazing for a kitchen tea or baby shower, things that require "just lovely". The staff are phenomenal, friendly and constantly making sure we were happy and comfortable, that is what I call service. Thank you, for making my mom-in-law's day so wonderful! She already wants to go back. Love. Jambo.

LOVE IT! I have only been there once, but I will definitely go back!First the not-so-important stuff. It is a lovely venue for a high tea or brunch. It has lovely patio a big front garden, so if your friends are bringing kids, there's lots of room to play without disturbing other customers. Also, if you're an antique fan, bring lots of money so that you can spoil yourself at the shop. The decor is also beautiful. Now to the important stuff:I ordered the Traditional English Breakfast which was heavenly, and my friend ordered the Mediterranean scone, which she also really enjoyed. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly and prompt. We ordered several cappucchinos and she really was on the ball.It really is a lovely restaurant.I highly recommend it.

I went for breakfast with my mom since she's a big fan of antiques and vintage style restaurants.<br/><br/>This venue is clearly suited to babyshowers and high teas as there were 2/3 groups at the time we were there. <br/><br/>I had the bacon and mushroom savoury pancake (the menu on Zomato is not the menu that they are currently using so don't rely on it) which was actually very good. The caramelised onion is just right and cuts through the cheese sauce to add another dimension to the dish. My mom had the coronation chicken which see said was nice but she won't order it again.<br/><br/>The iced coffee and croquette cake was good too and rounded the breakfast off nicely.<br/><br/>However my big issue was the long delay between ordering and receiving the food (exactly one hour) but I think it was because of the big groups there today and the restaurant being very busy.<br/><br/>The owner is really friendly and clearly takes pride in her restaurant so if you like high teas and British cooking then give them a try.

Went for lunch with a foodie friend to check out this lovely quaint Victorian secret restaurant. It has a wonderful relaxing feel to it, amongst the eclectic decor of the past. Definitely a ladies place. <br/><br/>We had the curry chicken pancake and bacon and mushroom pancake that comes with a salad. The salad is a proper salad and not just a pretend one. It had more than two ingredients. The pancakes were substantial and definitely filling. We both enjoyed our choices and they were tasty. <br/><br/>We shared a courgette cake. Did not taste anything like the veggie, it was very fresh and light. <br/><br/>Ordering tea is great as it comes in a big tea pot with two tea bags - appreciated that. <br/><br/>The waitress, I think there is only one was super friendly but got busy with other tables. The energetic and very personable owner did stop by to find out if we needed anything. <br/><br/>Lovely tranquil setting, we will go back.

Beautiful setting in lovely shaded garden in the heart of Northcliff. Great ambiance. Friendly excellent service. Delicious food. There is a fantastic hairdresser on the premises.

Beautiful garden, easy parking, fabulous decor, interesting shops, pretty ladies room and Lovely ambience, delicious food but slow service x

Had a baby shower at the Silver Teaspoon recently. Great venue for a function like this. Service is a bit but we were a large group. The garden is great as is the vintage old English tea garden decor.
Food Lover Deluxe
What a great find for breakfast, light lunches or just a great cup of tea. Ample secure parking, beautiful setting and true Victorian ambience. The inside section is pleasant and while offering protection from the nasty wind we've been experiencing lately is spacious and still allows a good view of the garden and patio. The patio must be stunning on a calm day with its many big umbrellas providing plenty of shade. <br/>The service was pleasant and efficient to begin with though a little slow when the restaurant filled up (at 10h30!) but then who wants to rush in such peaceful and pleasant surroundings? The menu is very small but caters for most tastes. My creamy scrambled eggs with bacon, mushrooms, fried tomatoes and a homemade cheese scone were delicious. As for the huge silver pot of tea, even a confirmed teacoholic like myself could not finish. Although not the cheapest breakfast in town (R95 in total), it was worth every cent.
Amy Heydenrych
Wonderful, child-friendly destination for an afternoon tea. I went here for a bridal shower, which played out perfectly in this vintage-styled open plan venue. The waitresses brought out tray after tiered tray of delicious high tea treats. The scones were a winner-not dry at all and served with generous tubs of cream, butter and jam. Other treats included red velvet cupcakes, chocolate brownies, sandwiches, spring rolls and macarons. It's great to have a place in Jozi where you can have an unpretentious high tea that doesn't cost a fortune but delivers on the goodness.
