Review Voodoo Lily - Johannesburg

Buyisiwe Shongwe
Really cool, easy going restaurant with a relaxed, laid back atmosphere. The food is good and wholesome. Nice coffee. Food a per friendly. Down to earth suburban feel. Great for lunch and brunch. The burgers are excellent!!

Finally came here to try the Reuben Sandwich. It was good! I love the fact that it tasted like they made everything in-house (or at least ordered in from small batch manufacturers), from the bread, to the pickles and mustard. I’ll be back to try more.

What a great find. The sloked Haddock was great. The menu was robust and priced right. The best part about this place is the location; right off the park and in a great neighborhood. Very dog friendly and all the patrons were very nice
Natasha Rizzo
Love the doggy menu...and so did my dogs. Had to order more food for them cause one plate was not enough. The staff very friendly ..food was good and cafe has a holiday vibe to it
Keith Morris
Amazinglocation, vibe and food. Very popular Sunsay Breakfast.
Boozy Foodie
A relaxing deli café - and pet-friendly with outside seating as well! The best carrot cake and divine bagels. Also had a Reuben sandwich as take-away that was super tasty.
Ntiyiso Mkhabela
Great food and a variety of nibbles. The flat bread is a must have and the staff is friendly and the place is just calm. Good for every meal. And I loved the reading Conner.
Jane “JaneyPaney” Schultz
Loved this cosy and well-stocked corner restaurant. Great character. Great food. Friendly service. Just right.
Graham Johnson
Was great to see haddock on the breakfast menu and I really enjoyed it however the benedict with mince was the clear winner. Took the dogs for a walk in the park nearby. A great spot for pet people to have breakfast.
nomfundo
Beautifully renovated offering different spaces for different moods. Heaters and the smell of fresh food and delicious bakes! Take a walk around the quiet block then sit down for good food.

What a gem of a place. Absolutely the most precious restaurant ever. Food is good. Ambiance is cozy. Friendly waiting staff. Just the fact that they cater for the diet conscious people is a one-up!

We went there for breakfast on 03 December, well did we have a surprise of our lives, not only is it more expensive than the most 5 star hotels I know, the food is honestly not good, there is no ordinary breakfast to pick from unless you are on a banting diet because those are plenty of those. So for 1 egg you pay R11. Add bacon that is burned to a cinder for R24. Baby tomatoes for R12, a beef sausage(should read boerewors as there is a difference) add antoher R27, for a slice of Rye bread add R5. Now to me this is daylight robbery. My friend had the omelette for R33, no filling a all, bollognaise sauce for R35(more water than mince) and chibata bread R5. That still excludes your coffee. Nope, never again

Had such a poor experience here over the weekend. Glasses were dirty (covered and smeared in old lipstick) and when sent back I received a new glass with odd unknown things floating in the ice :/ French toast was drenched in syrup which I wanted on the side and covered in sprouts which is so unsafe for my pregnancy during the listeria outbreak. Portions were very small and overpriced for what you get. Disappointing and would not recommend.

Had an Amazing experience. Photographed a small wedding here. I loved the waiters, managers, the food, kindness from all the staff. Did I mention amazing food? A photographer usually see the "behind the scenes" of a venue or restaurant. And I must say - top class. Recommend everyday to everyone!

Went for breakfast today and the eggs we got was not what we asked for. The waitress did not check up on us. The ciabatta in hubbys breakfast was not great. Don't think I will be back. Poor service
Ana Paula Soares
Not very doggie friendly ..., the cheese melt was cold.... and the calamari was ok initially but oily after a while !
Siobhan Rodgers
*BEST* baked cheesecake in JHB. The staff are always so friendly. Such a gem spot
Matthias Grabe
Simply awesome breakfast. Special, not on a low price level but worth it
Sunell Tamsin Hughes
I was there last night with my sister for your sushi special, what a wonderful time we had. Such friendly and attentive staff, a nice vibe and even better food. Will definitely be returning
Zee Kay
The vibe is quite nice, felt like I was in a small country town. The service very impressive, staff polite and oh Mr Manager I still want to know what's in that liquid cocaine you served to us a welcome drink I'm definitely coming back for those Ice Popsicles.
Tehilah Simantov
Finally a proper pet friendly restaurant 🐾🐾🐾. Very friendly staff and delicious food. Free wifi and pet friendly 😊
Andrew Russ
Below par for JHB. Lackluster food. I've never seen the owner present at the restaurant. Great location and potential. Such a pity.
Candida Di Giandomenico
Enjoyed it... had some good meals. Offers an unusual menu with Banting options and vegetarian selections. Dog friendly too which is cool.
Laraine Van Rooyen
Wow! Best breakfast I have had in a long time, so yummy! And the best cupachino ever
Stacey Layne Sanchez
Love coming here on a Saturday morning for breakfast with our doggie! Friday nights are just as awesome with the acoustic singer, sushi and excellent service! Keep up the good work guys!

I'm always on the look out for a new brunch spot and this one ticked all the boxes! It's quiet and calm with a very spacious feel. The staff are friendly and the service is great! They offer all the regular breakfast options and thensome! The food was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful!

The Food was fresh and delicious. Service backed up the food. Will be back
Tyrone
Great experience. Friendly staff and good food. Coffee a bit too strong, but that’s my own problem 😂 definitely recommend this place.

This is great area to work from. We were happy with the WiFi and beer they have on tap. You have to try their carrot cake if you ever make a trip to this cute spot.

This place is a great breakfast spot. Great vibe nice seating good food. The venue is pet friendly however it becomes a problem when other people bring their pets to the restaurant and let them walk over to other tables whilst you are busy eating. Also allowing their dogs on tables outside. Not sure how hygienic that is. I love dogs i just feel other people should told or instructed to make sure their pets don’t trouble other customers. this was not done by the staff at the restaurant. The manager did come however his poor attitude towards the situation was the troubling matter. Hence the one star.

First time for a Saturday breakfast at this neighbour hood restaurant. Nice family atmosphere with great eggs Benedict. New York Benedict has an exceptional smoked salmon and the Barcelona Benedict with chorizo and fresh tomato salsa brings a freshness. Pet friendly so bring your pups! Even has snacks for the fur babies on the menu!
JimBeth
Nice atmosphere.... friendly owner and staff.
Had the Barcelona Benedict.... very nice, loved the addition of the fresh salsa....
Breakfast menu done, next time will be lunch or dinner.
BONUS: dog friendly, even have dog treats on the menu.

10.06.2019 Attended the relaunch of Voodoo Lily Café
I haven't been before, but loved the simple yet comfy style of it and the eye catching wall by the bar. Got to spend some time with friends drinking G&Ts and nibbling on some food.

Plan on going back to do a proper menu investigation 😋

#voodoolicious
#TheFoodMusketeer
#TheFoodMusketeerEats
#TheFoodMusketeerDrinks
#TFMVoodooLilyCafe

Been craving pancakes all week and what i got a voodoo lily was not a pancake and was far from an american pancake either. It was a flop cake. Thick doughy pa cake with mo taste. Owner did offee me a crepe from arbour but lost my appetite. My partners egg benedict was dry and looked awful. Went back the next day. She had prego roll that was drenched in wine andvery unappetizing. I have tacos.... which it was not. One big wrap with all the filling in one wrap. Not cripsy tacos... can honestly say its not somewhere i will recommend to friends... just not up to steach. Sorry. Given it the benefit of doubt 5
Times but each time is has left a no... cant say i will be back.... menu very disappointing. Needs a lot of re thinking.... arbour cafe too...
Gabriella Rosen
The service is fast, good and friendly, it's a nice little cafe in a nice sunny area for winter and good shaded area for summer with delicious food and coffee to have.
Tyson
Bullet proof coffee was disappointing, tasted like an inferior or unsuitable butter was used. I ordered their eponymous burger (with beef), which was alright, if a bit stodgy and didn’t hold together very well. The chips were uncooked and inedible. A disappointing experience overall, despite the lovely airy space and tasteful overall appearance of the cafe. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. People around me seemed to be enjoying their meals, however. Perhaps I was just unlucky.

We went to this restaurant on recommendation by a friend, however I will not be back. The service was so slow and the food was freezing cold. Overall a really bad meal.
Food Talk
Food was dead average and took too long to arrive. When it arrived it was cold. Service was shocking and my waitress was not hospitable. Overall, it was a shocking experience and I will not be going back. I do not recommend.
Katerina
Went to try Voodoo Lily Cafe and it was extremely disappointing. Will definitely not be back. We waited well over an hour for our food to arrive. I asked the waitress if it was nearly ready to which she replied it will be out “right now”- 20 minutes later we were still waiting. Once it arrived it was cold and looked as if it had been sitting in the kitchen for the last hour. The food was not fresh and overall a shocking experience. I would not recommend this establishment.

Voodoo Lily is a lovely, popular cafe in Illovo. It was my first time there - as usual it was a for a meeting. We just had cappuccinos and tea, but we saw some delicious food being carried past us. I will definitely be back when ol I'm in the area.
Tumi
I haven’t been to this restuarant in a while and I assume that the management has changed as the menu was different from the last time that I visited the restuarant. The first problem that I had was that the MCC was flat. The waiter did get me another one so that was great. We had a lovely waiter but that couldn’t compensate for the food. The Voodoo Club was lovely but the chips that came along with them were too oily and I couldn’t even stomach them. All in all it was an average experience. The waiter was lovely though.

Great vibe, fab food. Terrible service from Pretty the waitress. No menu. Had to get up and get one myself. Arguing with me, every item we asked for she just looked at us? Didn’t understand a single word we said. Literally. I’m not being mean. Needs lessons!!!!
Tumi and Queen were really great though - thank you. Redeemed the service.

On a cold and wintery morning and after a walk in the park nearby, I popped in to get a warm meal and to try a restaurant on my bucket list.

I ordered the Sharkys Poached Eggs which I was told is a popular choice. It was probably not the best choice for me personally because I am not a fan of hollandaise sauce but the rest of the components sold me on it. It was an excellent choice and the egg was medium/hard, the bacon super crispy and the avocado was ripe.

Service could definitely improve - minimal interaction and service. The tables are also too close together in certain areas which makes it uncomfortable to get in/get out. But overall lovely ambience and I will return...on a warmer day to try their all you can eat sushi
Ashdesai5
Vodoo is a relaxed neighborhood cafe during the day and a restaurant by night. The breakfast/day menu has got some different options to the regular breakfast menus. Only downside is the lack of a selection of pastries and cakes..but definitely worth a visit.
Charl Swanepoel
Terrible. Rude waiter. Rushed along a relaxed evening. Just wanted to close early so he can go home, even though they claim tombe open till late.
Lisa Lumley
Voodoo Lily Cafe used to be my absolute favourite breakfast spot! The breakfasts are good and the coffee is delicious. However, I have decided to stop visiting here as the prices are totally out of hand. I ordered the French toast with cream cheese and berry compote. The French toast alone is R40 with the cream cheese and berry compote costing you another R55!! In total I paid R95 for a tiny portion of French toast and left hungry. I don’t understand how some of these prices can be justified.

I have visited this place a few times in the past for drinks and dessert which was quite enjoyable and relaxing.

For some reason, whenever I visit I hear the same music and find that the food and service are sub par. I really hope that the concerning issues I have experienced are fixed as this cafe is well positioned and has friendly waiters.

This week I popped in for a breakfast meeting on a cold winters morning and decided to try the vegetarian shakshuka was watery of which I ordered with medium poached eggs that arrived hard. I was hoping the meal itself would be tasty and unfortunately it was not.

The pita bread was also stale (definitely not made or ordered fresh) and had green specs on it which is a clear indication to be thown out and not served to customers. I am not sure how the chef and waiter could miss this as there is a clear lack of quality control. Furthermore, I had no energy to call a manager after I told the waiter when I got a blank look.

Besides these issues, the drink I ordered came hot and was adequate. Unfortunately I think I will only be visiting this place again in the distant future for cake and a hot drink.
Gary Rutstein
Excellent service, wholesome good food. Always on point. The atmosphere is bright and breezy and it is a really fresh neighborhood venue. I thoroughly enjoy their breakfasts, salads and burgers.
Elle Mbadaliga
Lovely breakfast spot, friendly waiters and great service. I had the salmon benedict, I thoroughly enjoyed it... however it would be even better if the salmon was fresh and not cooked. This will be my regular breakfast spot.

Went here for breakfast today, with a friend. It's a nice, airy restaurant in an unassuming shopping centre with a healthy turn-out of customers that makes it look like a favourite eatery for those easy Sunday mornings.

My friend ordered this club sandwich and I, the french toast with cream cheese and berries with a side of bacon. The ciabatta bread was quite hard but the sandwich was nice. My french toast was freshly made, but the whole combination with the berries and cream cheese was not great... quite bland, in fact. The bacon was very overcooked (as can be seen from the photo) and lacked taste. We had a great waitor though, who was accommodating to my friend's special requests which was nice. But very average experience with the food, unfortunately. Would give a 3 for the food but adding half a point for great service.

Love voodoo lily.
The food is really great and I enjoyed the live music they provided, they have a chilled yet romantic theme to they restaurant. It’s perfect for a date or double date with friends. Don’t forget to try a bottle of those red!

Feeling ripped off. A freind and I visited this establishment for lunch we were part of a group of people who had attended an exhibition in the area.
When we arrived we informed the waitress that others may join us but asked for her to keep our tab separate. We placed our order prior to the others joining. This place has a compulsory 12% gratuity for tables of more than 8. Ultimately there were 9 people of whom only 4 ordered food the remaining having coffee or a drink only. Despite requesting a separate bill. The bill arrived as one with a compulsary 12% tip.
My take is that this was deliberately done in order to charge the 12%. This disingenuous behavior will result in my never returning to this establishment and in me sharing this experience with all I encounter.
The food is not in any way exceptional enough to entice me back. Voodoo Lily you have lost a customer for life for the sake of a mere R30. I trust you find it wprth it

A place for a quick bite. Food comes as the menu promises, nothing too fancy nor too little, Voodoo Lily cafe offers quite good value for money. This place is dog friendly and a lot of the customers do bring their loved ones here after a jog or a walk. It's a nice spot in summer when you can sit outside and bask in the sun
Mignon Baines
I've had mixed experiences here. The service can range from 2 to 4 stars (depending on the day? Or perhaps the staff?). The food has always been good and we love the coffee milkshakes. There are quite a few paleo options and the dishes on offer are a little different from most other places. Sometimes there can be a lot of smokers outside and the smoke will blow inside or into the outside non-smoking area.
Claudia
Had the most delicious meal. Food is fresh and the menu is great. Service was fabulous and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Parking super easy and no need to fuss with having to mission with parking tickets etc. All in all, a fab evening.

Thank you to the owner for giving us a much better breakfast experience. Even my dog got treats on the house!!!! Thank you Jono!!!! Great breakfast and even better coffee!!
Phat_Panda118
Lovely place for Sunday breakfast! They were quite busy, but our orders came quickly and were absolutely delicious...try the Baxter breakfast or the second-to-none eggs Benedict. Most importantly, coffee to die for.
Nonkululeko
Had lunch on a Saturday afternoon, had chicken and mushroom pasta which was Devine. The chef came out to greet us and make sure that the food is going down good. All in all the service and food was great. I will definitely come again
Afra Giustizieri
I joined a friend for lunch here and to be perfectly honest, very average rated food! My pasta pesto was very oily and why are there green vegetables with this dish? This dish would be far better without all the added vegetables and feta! My friends hake and chips were also super oily so she avoided the actual batter.. rather disappointed! The service was however fairly decent as we were attended to very warmly and welcomingly but unfortunately will not be back..

Nice little spot in Glenhove for brunch especially sitting outside on a sunny day. The spot is family and pet friendly and the menu even has pooch treats. Menu is simple and food seems freshly prepped. Only grudge I have is the service. We'd sat for about 10 minutes without anyone offering me a menu. The table next to me arrived after me had less patience and eventual had to ask a waiter for a menu. We still didn't get a menu until 5 minutes after that. we were given the breakfast menu at 11:55am, even though breakfast ends at 12:00, so we couldn't actually order anything off that menu. We again needed to flag down a waiter to place our order, after no one attended to our table after 20 minutes. We eventually moved to a table outside and the service seemed better when it looked like a manager was checking on the tables.
Jill Nudelman
Nice casual vibe. It's pretty empty for a Saturday night. Good service. Poor wine list. We order a
Boschendal merlot 2015. It's well priced and not too bad
Most Banting friendly menu I've ever seen
There's a sushi special on on Saturday nights - all you can eat for R155.
Avo maki comes to the table extremely quickly! Messily cut. The nori's surprisingly soggy considering there're 2 sushi chefs on standby. Oh well.
The salmon's not good. Badly flavoured and it tastes a bit like dirty dishwater. The cauliflower mash is awful.
My grilled hake is small but surprisingly tasty and the vegetables good.
Don't know if the manager's around. No one besides our waiter comes to ask how the food is.
Won't be back for supper. Maybe for lunch or breakfast. It's conveniently located for us.
I took my dog along with me to Voodoo Lily this afternoon and we both had a great time. The staff were very accommodating, the food was really tasty (I had calamari) and it's a really lovely atmosphere to get some work done and spend time with friends (furry or otherwise). The only thing I wasn't too crazy about was the Justin Bieber greatest hits playlist on repeat.

This past Saturday, I met friends for breakfast here and thought it time to write up a review.

Voodoo Lily Café is a café that uses local, organic suppliers when possible and have a determined focus on the local community and family.. As such, this past year they popped up on my radar when they were featured as one of the best healthy restaurants in South Africa, but I digress.

Their menu features deli-type foods, breakfasts, sushi and great coffee! Another interesting feature: They also cover your dogs foodie needs with a choice of organic chicken breast slice, organic chicken livers and puppy biscuits.

On my visits I have selected and enjoyed:
1. Their banting SHARKY’S POACHED EGGS breakfast: Two poached eggs served on sliced avo, topped with bacon, sprinkled with Danish feta, rocket & served, with a side of hollandaise sauce. AND
2. Their banting CREAMY SCRAMBLED EGGS with spicy chicken livers.

All in all a good visit and as I am both an avid sushi lover and have a fondness for soup of any kind (during the cold weather) I will be back soon.

*Recommendation: If you are looking for a healthy banting spot or one that is friendly to both children and your hounds, this is it!!

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

We decided to have dinner here after a dog walk. The staff were very friendly and service is good. The food arrived quickly and was unremarkable but fine. A plus is that it is also dog friendly.
Genya Beulah Gluckman
A dog lovers heaven. Not only can you bring your pooch a long but you're also surrounded by dogs. Really delicious bread and jam, however, there are no vegan options, and the hot chocolate is very insipid and sweet. Really great atmosphere and a very short walk from Ethel Grey park where your dog can roam free.

What a disappointment. My partner and I went for lunch the other day, and I will never go back. I'm still waiting for my drink (I went last Tuesday) and the beer battered fish was awful - the batter tasted like flour and the chips were totally undercooked. My partner waited about half an hour to 45 minutes for his food and when it finally arrived it was very unappetizing (he ordered a beef patty and sweet potato wedges). The waitrons seemed to have no idea what was going on and were running around like headless chickens the whole time. It seemed like there was zero supervision. The poor service and quality of food cannot even be attributed to it being a very busy day because the restaurant was only about a quarter full. I was really looking forward to going to this restaurant for the first time, but I will now never go back.
Cory
What a disappointment. Decided to have breakfast there based on some positive reviews. Clearly, those reviewers need to get around some and experience real food. The waitstaff are fine - friendly and attentive. The freshly pressed juices are fine too. And there it ends. The food is simply mediocre and unimaginative. Not to speak of being ridiculously priced for a breakfast no better than any of the well known low end family eateries.

Visited Voodoo Lily Cafe for lunch a few days ago and I was quite excited by the huge variety on the menu. The service was quite disappointing as it was very slow and we often did not know who was serving us. The food took ages and we had to always look for someone to serve us despite there only being two tables of people in the restaurant.

I had the veg burger with no buns, topped with feta and jalapeño. It was a nice meal but the patty was a little dry. My sister had the bunless chicken burger with a creamy blue cheese topping - she felt it was okay. My friend had sushi and calamari which she enjoyed.

Overall, it's a cute place with a great menu but the service is lacking and the food needs to be taken up a notch.

(Side note - my sister found a piece of plastic in her chicken from its packaging [see picture]. The manager gave us a half hearted apology and took R40 off the bill)
Nicola Slyper
This is quite a vibey spot, especially when the weather is good. We found a table pretty easily and the service was good and relatively quick. We weren't in any rush which made for a lovely breakfast.

I ordered a hot chocolate to drink, it was decent. I then ordered the Sharky's Poached Eggs, while it was a very generous option of avo and feta, I was disappointed that it didn't come with toast. This is at an additional charge which I think is a bit cheeky. Perhaps they should consider having normal toast available but charge extra for any special types of bread.

Great evening at VLC! With the new owner, so many awesome new changes from the menu items, selection choices, sushi to live music! So much cleaner, outside music & the new deck! This place is going places & just one way! #Upward #welldone

Came here after run as was venue meeting place.Had a refreshing mango froozino and shashuka, found it a little too much tomato and needed more chili but that's way I would have preferred it,was still quite enjoyable.
Caitlin
A great spot in the suburbs, perfect for a lazy Sunday morning breakfast. They are often very busy, but we always seem to receive good service. While the breakfasts are slightly more pricey than other places, their portion sizes are generous and very flavourful, so worth it. I always have the Shakshuka-I cannot resist! It is so delicious, and so much food, but its too good not to finish. Great vibe, with lots of outside seating and many people walking past. Love!
Nicola Stotter
A very cool place to have a quick breakfast with friend before work. On point service, great healthy menu with well presented food. Also worth adding, a life saver when it came to a flat mobile battery, there's a plug point located on their deck area for mobile phones in need of charging.
Yvette Forssman
The cuppachino was so weak more milk than anything else @R27!!! And its not the first time!!! Will not have coffee here ever again. The food might be good but definately not the coffee.
Paula Dow
Voodoo lily cafe and deli is a gorgeous little spot on a corner of Melrose, busy with pedestrian traffic. It has a lovely European vibe. After reading zomato reviews I was very excited to try out this restaurant which has so many intriguing little features including an extensive banting menu and treats for your pets.
Nadine
I really love the breakfast here and the bacon must be the best in town. Beware though the menu prices on here our seriously outdated and inhouse restrooms need some TLC both in cleanliness and DIY.
Ashley
A little cafe in the 'burbs yet central enough for post work dinner/post night out breakfast.
A great option if you are looking for a fresh, healthy meal option (they are Banting friendly) at really any time of day.

Our table had the grilled hake, which was cooked perfectly and the veggies were tasty and crunchy. The bunless burgers went down well although the Camembert and Cranberry is really only for Cranberry enthusiasts. The pricing is fair for the sizes of the portions served up.

Service was friendly and laid back and the outdoor seating is perfect for summer.

Visit if: you have a dog (they have a dog menu) or are looking for a neighborhood cafe vibe that is literally 15 mins from everywhere in central Joburg.
Hannie Van Liebergen
Casual light meal options. Service a bit slow but food very good! Recommend it for breakfast and lunch. Great choice of salads and all you can eat sushi special.
Jenny Louw
I must admit, I thought this was a breakfast spot but now that I've seen their lunch menu I'll have to pop by to try their lunch. The service was good and the food was, well, nice. I do like the atmosphere and I like that there's seating outside.
Kyla Meyerson
I went to Vodoo Lily with some friends and our dogs on a Friday evening for some hot chocolate. They even have a menu for your dogs- livers, chicken breasts and doggie treats. It was such a nice spot to enjoy the evening.
Nicole Meyerson
Perfect restaurant if you want to bring your pets with. Not only are they dog friendly but they offer a dog menu too!

Very nice location, especially for summer/spring.
FoodloverJHB
This is one of my favourite cafés in the Rosebank-Illovo-Norwood area. However, after this weekend I don't think I will go back...ever.

There was a running event at Wanderers, and as such many runners came to Voodoo for a post-run breakfast. Thus, the place was packed. Even so, we got a table upon arrival.

The waiter was there immediately to clean the table. We waited a few minutes for menus though. After placing our drinks order, we waited about 10minutes for the coffee and juices. The coffee came in a take away cup, as they did not have enough clean mugs...fair enough, but communicate this to your patrons upfront. Then we had to wait so long for a teaspoon to stir the coffee, my friend got up and helped himself to a plastic teaspoon inside.

We ordered food and needless to say it took about 30minutes for the food to arrive. Upon arrival the hollandaise sauce was missing from one breakfast as well as the extra bacon ordered. The bacon arrived a few minutes later and we had to send back the one plate in order for them to add the sauce.

The food was still a great quality, but the service was horrendous. If you cannot handle your restaurant at full capacity, reduce the amount of tables or increase the waitstaff.
Vish Singh
Very good location, atmosphere was great, food was great, however the service let the place down. The waiter just could not understand us. Call another one and same thing. Ordered coffee and sugar less hot chocolate, never came until we asked third time. Food will make me give the place another shot, hope the service is better
Smelly Celly
I came here to do some work and I was very happy with my decision! They make really good fresh fruit juices and the service is top notch! The food that kept passing me by looked really fresh and tasty. I had just eaten somewhere else, so I didn't order food, but I will be back soon again to try some. They have free wifi and good music playing in the background. I enjoyed this place a lot :) Will update this review once I've tried the food.

Went there for supper and had the build your own burger... I settled for the vegetarian option because i eat only halal meat and this place doesn't offer that as far as i know but i was not disappointed with my choice. It the first time in a long time that i could not finish my meal because it was so satisfying and flavourful. Omg i cannot wax enough about how awesome they are. My friend had the mussels and i managed to sneak a bite and it was the best i have ever had !
Janine Howard
Great atmosphere and very friendly and helpful staff. We had the all you can eat sushi and it was excellent value for money! They also have Elderflower cordial which is rare and quite delicious!
Noni Demetriou
Love this restaurant it is definitely a hidden gem. Great for Breakfast and lunch. Have the shashuka for breakfast and it's generous and hearty. For lunch the other day I had the best burger ever! Beats any of the burger places out there it was delicious! Great service and chilled vibe.
Abs
I absolutely enjoyed this place passed by for a quick bite after work ... The Banting cup cake is to die for 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 My friend an I also enjoyed our Mains we ordered the Banting grilled hake with greens and salmon with Cauli mash 😊 I am definitely coming back for more 🙌🙌🙌 The service team was also amazing ... Thank you for making our evening perfect !

Voodoo lily is a favourite breakfast spot of mine. However I was recently disappointed to find out that their menu had changed with their original french toast option not being available. However, the chef did oblige and made it with all the toppings it previously came with. The voodoo burger is good as well - I ordered that once when I went for dinner there. But the standout item on their menu is their elderflower cordial. I order it every time I am there.
Sandile Shangase
I love this place because it super chilled and a hidden gem in Johannesburg. The service was amazing and they have the best sushi special(R130 all you can eat). This is the perfect place to take someone on a first date 👀.

10 of us descended on Voodoo Lily Cafe for Father's Day Brunch ,there was something for everyone- various dietary requirements and allergies taken into account.

Service was average.

Everything looked appetizing , I found the chicken livers lacking in flavour and the churros disappointing, the overall sentiment was that the food was good. The eggs Benedict with crispy bacon was an interesting change.

They have some advertised specials which I'd go back for.

Love this place for breakfast. The food is consistent, the coffee is great and the service attentive. Really a great local spot to enjoy some delicious grub, with friends or alone. It's also dog friendly, so after a run on a Saturday come with your furry friend and enjoy time together. @voodoolilycafe

I went there for breakfast with my sisters. My younger sister's food came half way through our meal. I ordered the French toast and the presentation (an omelette on ciabatta) was poor. My sister ordered the creamy scrambled eggs with spicy chicken livers. The liver lacked zing and weren't well seasoned. Disappointing after hearing good things from my friends!

The place has character for a local neughbourhood restaurant. Food is awesome and fresh as well as the presentation. I had the grilled hake with fresh greens and an avo salsa.

Voodoo Lily is a great brunch spot on a Summer & Winter's morning.

The food is very well prepared and taste quite delicious. The portion sizes do leave you wanting for a bit more, especially considering the prices you have to pay.

Something that can be worked on is their service levels as it varies - you just hope and pray you are the lucky one to get a friendly waiter.

A definite for any one who enjoys fresh, well-made food.

Really love this little cafe, so quirky and fun! I had the grilled hake on greens for dinner which was delicious. I was very excited to try the banting cupcakes for dessert. They really hit the spot with no guilt! Definitely recommended.

It's the second time I've been and I'm so impressed with the level of service. The food is delicious, particularly their breakfast options. The menu offers only a few options for breakfast, but they're all a bit different and you can build your own breakfast too. Definitely a must! Thanks guys!

Good service, the waiters are attentive. Great atmosphere I love the fact that you can bring your dog with, and order him food from the menu too! If you're not a fan of dogs just sit inside, dogs aren't allowed inside. The eggs Benedict was superb, perfectly cooked bacon and poached eggs. The real star of the show was the baked cheese cake, it's probably the best I have ever had. The texture was perfect and it wasn't too sweet. It was creamy and light. Even if you pop by just to try the cheesecake it's worth the visit!

Went for breakfast, service ridiculously slow & food very average & too expensive, won't go back. Waiters were very good but obviously can't get the food to you if the kitchen staff are disorganised.

Such a lovely morning with a friend at Voodoo Lily. Decor wise it doesn't shoot the lights out but sitting on the street corner or on the deck is what makes an early brekkie in Jozi all the more worth it. Waiter was relatively attentive and the food absolutely delish - well priced and hearty portions.

We came to Voodoo Lilly cafe for Janis, a girl with a wonderful voice and awesome personality. Definitely worth the trip from Kensington.

We arrived at the quiet corner eatery, not busy but not too quiet either.

The staff was truly amazing and so friendly. We were even greeted by hand by the manager. Service was fairly good.

I was not very hungry and it being cold I fancied the homemade tomato and basil soup. It was very tasty and accompanied by two pieces of lightly toasted artisanal ciabatta bread. You could clearly distinguish between the different flavors of the ingredients.

I also had a sample of the hake and chips, which by the way I'm still not sure if it was hand cut or not. It tasted fair I imagine. The fish was crispy hake, rapped in newspaper it was not only quirky but very well seasoned.

I also sampled the grilled chicken breast and vegetables. Wow that was pretty fantastic. The chicken was seasoned perfectly. And the vegetables were cooked 100% to perfection.

So mains was actually overall not bad at all and I'm curious to try some of their other dishes-terms and conditions apply.

I ordered the chocolate cake as dessert and here is where things all went wrong I'm afraid. The cake was firs of all too cold. Cold cake changes the structure and the way it tastes. The chocolate ganache was the only thing that I found appealing, yet it was not enough to save this dish. I also found out is that was made the day before. So that was a big let down.

The question is whether I will come back? For Janis's singing yes, for the value for money not likely no. I don't understand why a bill of R1200 for 4 people can be justified. I understand that restaurants must make money but charging R75 for a bowl of soup is very steep. Yes it's in a upmarket neighborhood but that should not be justifying the costs.

Popped into Voodoo Lily Cafe for a quick bite between meetings - a great lunchtime cafe. Service was quick and efficient. My chicken and halloumi salad was fresh and very tasty. Quite a few Banting dishes on the menu. Will be back.

We had our Mother's Day brunch at Voodoo Lily cafe.

The restaurant was bustling with a lot of people and some with their dogs as the restaurant caters for 'hounds' as well.

We were a group of 10 people and were seated in a comfortable area inside the restaurant.

The service was good and our waiter was pleasant!

We had ordered a lot of food. Some were breakfast, lunch of course dessert dishes.....namely:
~eggs benedict;
~sterns shanduka;
~creamy scrambled eggs with spicy chicken livers;
~ciabatta with avo and bacon;
~chicken and holloumi salad;
~fillet pasta;
~fish and chips;
~paleo chicken breast and vegetables;
~vegetarian falafel burger with extra holloumi;
~health muffin;
~malva pudding and custard;
~carrot cake; and
~pecan nut tart.

The breakfasts and most of the lunch dishes were really good. However the fish and chips were just too oily and the falafel burger lacked flavor. Their desserts were nice and the Malva pudding was sublime.

Overall, a pleasant experience and I highly recommend this as a breakfast spot!

What's a better place to start it than at a pet friendly Café.

Voodoo Lilly is situated in a great area. Opposite the Wanderers and a not far from a great dog park, it's pet friendly stance really makes sense. It's so great to be able to share a great morning out with our furry friends. While I didn't bring my best friend along this morning, it was so great to see so many people having brought theirs.

The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. They really go out of their way to try and make your visit as enjoyable as possible. Plus, everyone I interacted with had a great sense of humour.

For brunch I ended up ordering Sharky's breakfast. The highlight was a huge helping of Danish Feta, which i justified enjoying by the fact that the breakfast doesn't come with bread. The Avocado and bacon worked really well with the salty cheese, and the rocket was the perfect topping. The only negative was the hollandaise, which was very rich and tasted too strongly of butter.

All in all, it was a good breakfast, served in a good location, which everyone could enjoy with lots of furry friends. Until next time!

I love this place. The food is simple and tasty, the vibe is relaxed and friendly, the service is great and there is a lot of natural light. I have gone back over and over. Today I made my own breakfast and I loved it

A while back, I was on the way to a football game at discovery soccer park to play an early game, standard issue at around 6pm, my Monday night standard practice. Shortly after leaving I had got a phone call informing that the game had been canceled! Boo! But I was hungry and a friend was in the area. I rang her up and asked if she wanted to get dinner, she obliged and suggested we go to a nice little spot in Illovo called Vodoo Lilly Cafe and here's where we end up.

A nice tucked away secret with hidden gems found in good food and coffee. The first thing you need to know is that it's very small and intimate, but isn't that the perfect recipe for a small quirky restaurant/cafe? The space is gorgeous and characterful, the staff friendly and cheerful and the food, well that's the reason you're here right?

I jumped right in and baptized myself with the burger named after the cafe, the Vodoo Burger, paired with you standard issue, you can't go wrong if you tried, cappuccino which was delicious and well made. In the burger you'll find 200g of free range beef mince patty with roasted peppers, caramelised onions, local cheddar and Mozzarella cheese served with handcut chips. It was so good and filling I didn't finish it so I ended up taking the half for lunch the next day.

The food experience was great, the variety plentiful and very well priced and the service excellent so if you're in the neighborhood and want a nice quiet relaxing place to come to in an Illovo suburb, Voodoo Lilly is your first choice.
Bleedingears
A trendy corner cafe that sells everything from pasta to sushi. The deli section even caters to banters, with Banting rusks. It's also dog friendly which makes a nice change.

Love the green smoothies! Spirulina and goodness all stuffed into one drink, like a meal in itself! A winner! Great spot to meet the girls for a coffee in the morning or a drink in the afternoon, dog friendly and even has a dog menu

We went to Voodoo Lily Cafe for breakfast. The breakfast and coffee was fantastic and will definitely go back. We love going out for breakfast and being able to sit outside was great. The service was a little slow but we were in no rush.

When you think of street side cafè, this it, set on street corner with sidewalk seating and a relaxing atmosphere. The menu is simple yet great, with options for all palettes. The food is well presented with good portion sizes and delicious. Service could be improved but we were lucky to be assisted by the manager who is great. Fantastic place.

We had a really fantastic evening here for my Moms bday.

The restaurant has a really cool vibe to it with a large outside area, tons of seating and a very interesting bar inside.

As far as their menu is concerned they offer a very wide selection of dishes featuring a variety of sandwiches, burger options and mouthwatering mains. If you fancy something sweet they also offer lots of decadent desserts and some very tasty looking baked goods.

During my visit I decided to try out their 'Deconstructed Chicken Wrap', a very hands on meal that requires you to assemble your own wrap with a number of ingredients. Overall the wrap was excellent but it was quite tricky to get the chicken off the skewers at first and I felt like they could have been a little more generous with the Feta and Tomato.

For dessert we shared a portion of their Spanish Churros and they were phenomenal. A little too hot from coming straight out the oven, but they tasted heavenly especially with the Chocolate ganache dip that comes on the side.

To conclude everyone at the table had a great experience and the food was very good. The service was alright but could have been a tad bit faster. Voodoo Lily Cafe is definitely a spot to check out in Illovo and is especially nice in the evening.
Coffee was weak and had to be sent back. Food was served cold. Service was poor, staff needs training. Eggs were poached well but cold. Breakfast menu caters for banting diets but vegetarian options available.
Geoff Simmons
Rode through to Voodoo Lily for a breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by the setting, feel and quality of food and service. Really like this place. Try it out, it's a right lil gem.
Devin Sage
Really nice chilled place. Didn't like the fact that dogs were allowed at the restaurant. Barking with every passer by. The carrot cake was a bit too rustic for my liking. Very very dense.
Alexa Scola
We tried the eggs benedict and the french toast with bananas and mascarpone. Both were really really good.

The service however was not so good and the waiter seemed as though he didn't really care about our table.

Overall good but I wouldn't rush back.
Bev Morrison
They were a joke! Waited for much more than an hour for our breakfast to be delivered. Toilets were dirty and had run out of toilet paper. Waiters don't acknowledge you when you speak to them. They were running around like headless chickens. At least we had good company to talk to while we were waiting!!
Janine
Maybe salads aren't their strong point? Lettuce didn't look fresh, hardly any cucumber and I had to ask for dressing. Not rushing back anytime soon which is a pity as its a good location for me.

I like Voodoo Lily for a few reasons. The staff are amazing and recognise me so I immediately feel at home. I love the food - it's delicious and mostly quite healthy. I like the space - it's such a nice area and it is dog friendly! I really enjoy taking my puppies there on a weekend. However I find it quite annoying when people take their dogs and can't control them though - I'm sure the restaurant has a policy on this. There was a couple at a table next to me and their dogs were howling at everyone - upsetting everyone else's dogs and making it hard for me to chat to my friends - this was quite unpleasant. My pups really enjoy the doggy menu meals though.

Delicious dinner -salmon,cauliflower mash and fresh, fresh green veg mix of broccoli, mange tout,beans... very generous side of olives and absolutely delicious chunky sweet potato fries! Only downside was the live music was a tad too loud and didn't allow for conversation, but nice vibe and fun evening!

Honestly seriously and always the best Eggs Benedict. Have it with salmon for an extra yum. Served with perfectly poached eggs, a stunningly velvety and tasty hollandaise sauce on top of a freshly baked (not store bought) English muffin, topped with rocket for added yum. We've tried all over Joburg and no-one comes close to this yumminess. The coffee is also good, and on hot days the coffee freezo is a treat!
Carly Sutton
Lovely morning at this beautiful restaurant. I've been excited to try especially since they cater extensively for Banting. The food was excellent quality which made it especially delicious and such a nice vibe. Coffee was good and even when asking for water they go the extra mile and bring a full bottle for the table with little glasses full of ice and lemon. Service was quick and very pleasant. Will be back

Possibly one of the best breakfast spots! The Sharkys breakfast is my ultimate! If you going for lunch, I had the chicken prego and it was enough for two ladies to share ;)
Linda Thompson
Fantastic neighbourhood restaurant with outside seating. I was impressed with the food and service. There is a great selection for everyone's dietary preferences and options for gluten free, vegetarians and to my delight grass fed meat from Braeside.
Recommended!
