Tasty Chinese food - we had the crispy beef as recommended by a lot of other reviews, which was tasty although not as life changing as some people say, as well as the veg fu yong, greens and pork dumplings, all of which were delicious. Atmosphere is standard for the area - small and brightly lit. Service was very attentive.

Fong Mei is one of the oldest authentic Chinese restaurants in Joburg. I enjoyed their fried rice and pickled cucumber (starter). Going during the day mid-week allows you to enjoy your meal sitting outside without being concerned about isphithithi. The food is prepared quite quickly and the tea is always good.

Great food, great service. We really enjoyed it, and he was really helpful with our granny and ouma entourage. Definitely recommend it.

Authentic Chinese, definitely not Western. Plain and simple decor but we come to eat not for a lavish time on the town. Very good value and very friendly staff

Food is excellent and the service good at a reasonable price

Amazing food and authentic family run chinese restaurant experience. Great food, great value. Take your own wine

The owner is one of the original restaurateurs from jhb's old China Town near John vorster Square. The food is faultless, not a bit of wilted bok Choi in sight. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Very good Chinese food. Have been going to it for years. Have a branch in Rivonia owned by Candy. A lot more upmarket.

Delicious! Best crispy beef in Jozi - 5 Stars

How pleased I am to have found this gem! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! So flavorsome! And the service was impecabble! Our host, who was also our waiter, was so incredibly friendly, and it just made for a really lovely evening. The food came out so fast, and the portions were so big! All in all a lovely experience, I shall definitely be returning!

This is another one of those Chinese restaurants from my early days that I have decided to re-visit. The service was surprisingly good considering that most Chinese restaurants do provide shoddy service. As for the food, The tofu soup had a generous variety of ingredients, the sweet and sour pork had the right texture, beef flank pot was okay and too overpowering and the pork meatball and tofu pot was pretty good. Overall, nothing much has changed.

We didn’t not head to Cyrildene with the intention of going to Fong Mei, but ended up there due to the restaurant where we wanted to go was closed. Generous portions, great and friendly service! They take cash and credit cards. We’ll definitely be back!

Love the food, have been eating here for years & never been disappointed. Great value for money too. Description says cash only but they DO take card.

As authentic as you're going to get! I'm the heard of a Chinese dominated area, surrounded only by other Chinese establishments you really do feel like you're in some sort of "Little China". The owner is friendly and is quite pleasant. The food; a bit on the expensive side and is slightly less than you expect given the authentic build up. By no means a bad experience and one of the better restaurants in the area but saldy not one of my favourites. If you're in the area you must try it, but only if.

Still my favourite chinese restaurant which serves the best crispy beef in jhb. The salt and pepper calamari is also outstanding. The owner is super friendly and remembers all his regulars. I love to pop in for a quck tasty takeaway or a fun night seated in. Decor is plain and simple, but the food is delicious. Definitely a must try!

Fong Mei has been a family favourite for years. When I visit with my boyfriend these days it's quite a nostalgic experience and we like to try as many different dishes as possible. The owner is also a lovely guy and he's very helpful and chatty.

Their garlic ribs are excellent, so is their sizzling beef and prawn dishes. For the more exotic stuff, I absolutely love the century eggs (they're jelly, and black, and the yolk is creamy... maybe not for everyone :P), and the jellyfish is crunchy and has a wonderful chilli flavour. This time around I ordered deep fried beef flank (my faves!) and it was tender, flavourful and delicious. Ask for the red chilli sauce to go with it as it's spicy and excellent. My boyfriend had the sizzling chicken which was also super tender and had a nice sweet flavour. Their steamed rice was the only let down as it seemed a bit old and hard.

They have gotten a bit pricier for their main dishes but they have cheaper rice and noodle dishes on the menu. I suppose the price has gone up everywhere so it's just something to get used to. Otherwise this is definitely a spot we will carry on visiting in future.

I cannot wait to go back to this Restaurant (even if to order a take away, which I noted it was quite popular for). Owner is so attentive and friendly. Food was tasty and not to mention value for money. Also had Tsingtao beer which is an automatic winner for hubby. My new favorite restaurant in Cyrildene.

Sweet qnd sour pork was excellent and the crispy beef soft and but a little blad. The Saki was good but a bit cold for my liking. All and all still excellent value for money and always worth a visit.

Okay, so when you see this place u think dodgy but this Chinese place makes amazing crispy pork with soya and suger and deep fried prawns that is made to perfection, have it with pok chow and of course ask for beef flat noodles, u can eat as much as u want of that and not get horribly full.

Stopped off for a solo lunch - we'd eaten here before and found the food a little tasteless, but I ordered the beef with rice noodles and it was absolutely delicious. Hard to judge service because I was the only one there but will have to return to try more dishes.

There are not many chinese restaurants in Johannesburg that are memorable which I visit this place every month or two. The owner is always present and willing to assist with each and every request. The food here is better than most chinese restaurants in the area. There is a lot to eat here for vegetarians such as an eggplant hotpot (with no meat), clear broth soup with veggies and silken tofu and a starch such a noodles or egg fried rice. Prices and good and the service is usually quite prompt.

Where us Chinese go to eat. Proof enough. Order whatever you want, its all good! Note whatever you order will be for the table and not individual.

Situated on Cyrildene's Main Street, Fong Mei's neon sign is hard to miss. Having been here a couple of times, it's always fees trying something new on the menu. The restaurant is functional and the round tables all have a lazy Susan that encourage communal eating. I normally eat the crispy beef, but tried the double cooked pork which is now new favorite. My partner had a beef flank soup and we shared a seaweed salad, which were both delicious. The owner is always accommodating and super friendly and we'll definitely be back.

Fresh, clean and fast service. The owner is happy to recommend dishes and make you something which isn't in the menu.

Chinatown on a whole isn't very disabled friendly but with assistance this little place may be accessible. No stairs to get inside; you just need to be lucky with parking.

Food was fantastic! We ordered a few dishes to share including the vegetable spring rolls, crispy beef, peking duck, fried calamari, foo yung and bok choy. Great value for money!

Yummy

Had a great meal...was my first time eating here and i'd definitely recommend you try the sweet and sour pork and crispy beef. Just thinking about all that yummy food makes my mouth water.

As with all Chinese restaurants, order dishs for the table, not individual portions. It has been accused of being a bit too western. Who cares, unless you want to try the stuffed pig intestines next door. Whatever you choose, you have to have the crispy beef. It is the best in SA. Practically medicinal. The introductory menu I recommend is as follows: hot and sour soup (they bring one big bowl for the table); followed by the dumplings (not made in-house I suspect, but great nontheless); followed by the prawns on skewers (they are not sweet and sour!); followed by crispy beef (two portions at least); followed by Peking duck (it could be better, but not in SA). Add a sizzling dish for good measure, as well as the seaweed and cucumber sides. Deserts... Ignore completely.

We come here often with family for a taste of simple but delicious Cantonese food.

The bok choi, ginger and spring onion and ginger beef, fried calamari, fried prawns and pickled cucumber are all delicious but the best definitely is the peking duck with pancakes.

Definitely worth a visit

You won't get really hygienic places in Derrick Avenue but this place does have good quality food, it's not dog or cat and the family that runs it take a real interest in customers. Never turn down a chance to eat there.

I love going to Cyrildene for the food at Fong Mei. I've had the crispy beef, garlic ribs, bok choi, salt and pepper calamari, crab and hot pot dishes.

My family and I have eaten here a lot! The decor is very simple, but the food is absolutely worth the drive. If you are in the area, do yourself a favour and drop in for a meal.

Even my non-Chinese friends love the food and look forward to our next outings here. It also doesn't hurt that the food is good value for money!

Can't say much other than, Crispy Beef! I have never ordered and been as satisfied as I have here. I have introduced many people to this gem and they thank me for it!

Being Chinese, this is my family's go-to restaurant for birthdays and special occasions.

The owner is always in the shop, and he is always very welcoming to customers. As Cantonese-speakers, I'm sure we get slightly better service that the rest, and that never hurts, hey? He refers to me with the respectful title of "brother", even though I am clearly younger than he is.

Some of my favourites include the crispy beef, salt and pepper calamari, the vegetarian hot-pot and of course, the roast duck.

I take a lot of non-Chinese friends there and they all love it. It is also one of the few Cyrildene restaurants that have English menus (with some photos) and accept credit card. The bill is handwritten in Chinese so expect some issues when handing this in for expense claims at the office (hehe!).

Go in big groups, order and eat communally, as Chinese families would eat. Not only do you get to taste multiple dishes, but it works out super cheap!

Fong Mei is my new go-to restaurant for good authentic Chinese Food. Whether I'm ordering take aways or having a sit down meal, I'm never disappointed. This tiny restaurant serves a wide variety of dishes which will satisfy the not so brave with the chow mein or crispy chicken/beef to some more unique hot pot dishes.

In terms of vegetarian options, I love the Lo Hon Vegetables - or often called a Monk's dish. It consists of different mushrooms / and fungi; bean threads, bamboo shoots, wood ears, sprouts and all other delights.
They also have an egg plant hotpot - which I ask for a vegetarian version - while a little bit oily - the taste with good steamed rice is so good.

The decor is like all restaurants in China Town, bare minimum, and in some cases dingy - I've had no problems with this restaurant in terms of cleanliness but their toilet facilities might not be the greatest, so you might not want to drink too much here, but other than that - you won't be disappointed.
