This is an all round family favorite ! My family have followed the owners from their original location in Hilbrow! The food NEVER disappoints and we always leave feeling very well fed. The restaurant is very simple and clean with a fabulous ambience. Bring your own alcoholic beverages - no corkage charged . Our order normally consists of deep fried garlic prawns , clams out of the shell with mixed with veg, sesame beef strips , 3 pot chicken , crab curry , sizzling steak, vegetable noodles and bok Choi. There is sooo much more on the menu but we stick to our customized one every time which never disappoints ! We will continue to visit this little spot and continue to eat great food and make more memories ! P.S never got to take pics of all the dishes before the family got hold of it ... and ... demolished ! — eating deliciousness with Jonathan Blackman at Fisherman's Plate 真味海鮮.

Visit Fisherman’s Plate in Cyrildene for great value tasty seafood. Waited quite a while for food however understandable as they were very busy. Clams in hot sauce was absolutely delicious as well as the chilli crab in coconut cream.
Loved the starter spring rolls.
I had the Stir Fried Clams with Leaks and Hot Sauce along with the Egg Fried Rice and some veggies on the side.
It was DELICIOUS. I can’t actually wait to go back there. The service is also really great.

Hadnt been through Cyrildene in 2018 and so decided to restaurant hop with friends and inevitably ended up at FP again! Taiwanese food, quick, tasty, fresh and made with care. We had Pork Ribs, Egg Fried Rice, Seafood Noodle and the most delicious Chili Crab. That along with the 3 Cup Chicken are crowd favorites! Chili Crab was swimming in a zingy, fiery, garlic and chili vinegar based sauce and while its a bit fiddly.. Its worth it and far easier than making crab at home. Very reasonable prices, and great portions. Take friends, sit on a cracked faux leather chair and enjoy yourself!
Fabulous, authentic food, no doubt about that - maybe just better decor and more serviettes and bowl to wash your hands etc. would be nice !
This has to be one of the most underrated restaurants ever! We went for a late lunch and we had the whole place to ourselves. The owner made recommendations of the chilli chicken and the sesame and spring onion prawns everything was so tasty and delicious! The interiors shouldn’t fool you the food is good portions generous and price reasonable
We opted for a sunday lunch with a difference and headed to Fisherman's plate in Cyrildene. We shared some crispy and fresh spring rolls for starters and all the adults opted for the crab curry bar one who had the chilli crab. It was so good there was more slurping than talking during the meal. The children had Calamari,Prawns and pork fried noodles, I have never seen my six year old have second and third helpings ever... dont expect a lavishly furnished restaurant, this is about the food experience not the ambience. Our hostess was attentive and had excellent suggestions. We definitely have to go back to try the rest of the menu especially the sweet sticky ribs.
Happy returns. Haven't been here for 4 years due to moving out the area. Still fantastic. Savvi is still her self. Don't give her grief she won't take your nonsense but all good fun. Food still very good and ambience great. Will be back soon worth the travel
Literally the most unassuming place. After hearing about it before a group of us thought we'd give it a try... from first impressions you are unsure as to what you've got yourself into , but our food was really good. Quite the gem!
It might seem a bit dodgy but it is authentic. Great Asian meals freshly prepared. Shop at nearby Oriental supermarket for great ingredients to take home with you. Fresh veggies on sidewalk amazing.
Well this is certainly not a beautiful space with lovely tables and chairs and decor. Occasionally you need to go back to basics and just eat good food .
The chili chicken is amazing just amazing I do want to caution you that you must not eat the chilis as they are killer hot. The clams are delicous the fresh fish equally good and the crab was so tasty. If I have one negative the rice was over cooked but who needs rice with dishes like this!
Doesn't look like much, just like all the places in this area, but the flavours are spot on. Great chinese takeout if you're craving it. Every dish was excellent! Support this place!

Love this place. The fact that their menu is not so big is to me a big plus. There is still enough to choose from. We also got some got advise from the owner. The curry crab is a star . I never tasted a sauce like that . Incredible.
Wow. Was pleasantly surprised by this place. I have always been reluctant to go in here as it looks as run down as the other shops around it but a friend insisted I give it a try the other day. The food was delicious and best of all not too oily! Will definitely come back again for another try. The clams and seafood fried rice were especially good
Me and my family had a really enjoyable meal here.
We had sweet corn soup and chicken springrolls to start: Soup was really tasty and springrolls were crispy and not oily.
Next we shared:
* The curry crab - most delicious sauce but difficult to eat
* Crispy beef - too spicy for the children with us but really really yum
* Three cup chicken - tender and really tasty (only get if you love strong ginger)
* Seafood noodles - not bad but average compared to the rest
* Crispy garlic prawns - great crunch and well cooked
I will definitely be back. Maybe to have the curry prawns so I can get the delicious sauce without the difficulty of eating crab.

Tasteful dishes, ordered the Stir fried tripe, clams with leeks, egg fried rice, prawn fried noodles, pork ribs, stir fried veg. Quite a unique little Chinese restaurant. They serve the real thing - not what we think Chinese food should be - and it is absolutely delicious 😀 take your own wine and do try something you have never had before - we did and we're delighted ! The fish is excellent - but I hear so are the meat vegetable and chicken dishes - sooo we are going back to order a selection of fish, chicken and meat dishes to share and delight our taste buds ..
What an amazing little spot to grab some lunch or dinner at. Plastic chairs and tables make the rustic little joint even the better. The flavors and the tastes of the food is simply incredible. From the calamari to the chili grab and three cup chicken. I would recommend everything on the menu it's simply the best. The service is sometimes slow and somewhat confusing. The self service drinks fridge but it makes up for everything when the food arrives at the table. Definitely a must go to, highly recommended.
The Fishermans Plate has been around for many years. The owners are friendly and the restaurant is one of the cleaner that you'll find in Cyrildene.
Fishermans Plate are known for their crab. Over the years the crab has gotten a lot smaller although this is a problem with crab in general so you can't really blame the restaurant - it does mean that the dish is a bit on the pricey side. The flavour they manage to get into their crab is still fantastic. They have four different crab flavours and if crab isn't your thing their other dishes are great too.
I would recommend the three cup chicken, the salt and pepper calamari as well as the sizzling beef.
Looking at the place I had many doubts regarding everything, but when the food arrived it was fairly impressive. The service is confusing but just be patient and the food compensates. Book the peking duck one day in advance.
Some of the very best tastes and Flavours here :) the fried calamari was really good but the crab curry was simply the best, with the most exceptional sauce. The chili mussels were also great and so full of flavour. One of the best meals I have had in Johannesburg! Don't expect anything fancy. What I would recommend is the chilli crab. Don't hold back use your fingers and request lots of tissues and a finger bowl. The last time I had crab this good was in Vietnam. We had deep fried prawns which was delicious. So crispy it was like a soft shell which could be eaten. Food is packed with flavour and fresh. Definitely coming back for more
If it's expensive tables and chairs, or waiters in times that you are after then go else where...but if you want the best food in Jozi then go to Fisherman's Plate. Make sure you try the calamari and the ginger and garlic chicken. Pricing is also great. Get there early as they don't take bookings and this place fills up quickly.
This place is a, as they have said hidden gem, it's all about the food. It's a bit tacky but the service is great and everybody is kind. Have been coming here since I was young and the two best dishes to order are deep fried beef chili strips and deep fried calamari rings with steamed rice. :)
I've been here once before to get take away, and swore I'd never go back. However I did, but to sit down with friends. This time I had an amazing time. Don't expect anything fancy, but go here for the food alone. My friends and I had one of the best dinner evenings we've ever had, in this small unassuming restaurant. The owner is very helpful and patient. We order a variety of dishes to share, and loved every bite. Quite happy about the food, shall definitely be going back soon. We order the prawns (decent), crispy beef (so decadent!), sweet chicken (so darn good, drool) and calamari (incredible!).
Not your average JHB restaurant but if you looking for good food in a very unpretentious environment, this is the spot! You help yourself to drinks out the fridge and bring your own with, if it is not beer or cool drink you want! Great place for a relaxed dinner with friends!
I'm rating FP 5 for the zingy, taste bud blowing food experience. When the food's this good, who cares about the decor or the slow service? Settle down and wait to be overwhelmed. There are few restaurants in South Africa where a chef has so clearly mastered the food he knows and where he comes from. There's no faddish tinkering here. Just the same explosive Taiwanese dishes every time. We always go for the crunchy fried prawns, the three cup chicken, the soft as butter steak pieces, the mussels in ginger and soy, the Thai sauce crab (best of the lot - i dream about it) and the clams and mussels, plus whatever whole fish in broth the Chinese party is eating at the next table. Leave your middle class pretensions behind. Taste for yourself. Wish I was there right now.
It may not look like much, but the food is simply amazing. Cant get enough of the calamari and the crab. not a bad dish on the menu. They could work on the décor to make the place look a little more appealing but who cares the food is great.
Easily the best Asian food in Cyrildene and probably Johannesburg. Love the Indo-Asian twist on some of the dishes. Faultless service. Definitely will be back soon. Rating 5/5 for food, but 3/5 for ambience (expected in Cyrildene).
Fresh and flavorsome! Easy going and owner is down to earth. Although it is in the heart of China Town there is always a good mix of people proving common appeal.
This is my FAVORITE Asian fusion eatery. It is a simple easy going place. The food is always super fresh. The food is the BEST. I have eaten here for the last 5 years, never had a bad meal. LOVE THIS PLACE.

Nothing pretentious, very generous portions (always enough to take home for lunch the next day) and incredibly tasty dishes. The decor is ala-Cyryldine and the owners will be more than happy to suggest dishes.
The hot clams and sizzling fillet are not to be missed!
The lack of chinese clientele should not put you off and this is very much an authentic Taiwanese establishment.

So after checking out reviews about the amazing food at Fisherman's Plate - I have to confirm: THE FOOD IS AMAZING.
We were a group of 10 people, so we got the corner spot with the lazy suzy, and we decided to bring 3 bottles of wine (no corkage charge) to add to all the ciders and beer we ordered.
I warned everyone that the food might take long (according to SO many reviews), but we weren't phased - as everyone around the table was quite the story-telling type. We ordered ALL the chicken springrolls as starters, and I think I had one smoke break outside, and the starters were on the table.

We've found our new favourite Chinese restaurant in Johannesburg! Really a hidden gem, this place looks like nothing from the street, but the food and service make up for it! Must try the clams and the three cup chicken! Made for a wonderful Sunday afternoon lunch.
We recently got take aways from this hole in the wall and I was beyond impressed with what we got. Their chicken spring rolls are delicious And beyond affordable at R5 each.
But the true hero of the meal was their 3 cup chicken. I would go as far as saying that it is the best Asian chicken I have ever had. The owner told us that it would take 20minutes to prepare, but it was beyond worth the wait. The sticky brown sauce was delicious, as was the caramelised garlic and ginger inside it. We also had the clam and leek dish which I loved, and the egg fried rice was a must have.
Definitely worth a visit if you want some unusual Asian food

This is the best place I discovered in Joburg and I'm so glad I got a chance to experience it. Sabby the owner is a wonderful source of entertainment and the perfect person to help you pick and choose from her Taiwanese menu. The restaurant is simple no frills and located in old Chinatown. It's surrounded by other Chinese restaurants and grocery stores. The sizzling beef is my favourite along with the vegetable noodles and spicy chilli chicken. I left all the ordering to her but it reminded me of my favourite restaurant back home but only less fancy. It's great food and I'd come here and eat every day of the week if I could!
This place was a wonderful surprise! Some friends told us we had to try it so following their lead, we went tonight. Driving in to the area, it has a completely different feel to the rest of JHB. The restaurant itself was very relaxed and simply designed. The service is a little slow but the food makes up for it.
We ordered a variety of different dishes, my favourites were definitely the crispy beef and the crab with ginger. These two dishes were outstanding. They don't charge corkage and overall the final bill was reasonable. We would definitely visit it again soon.

You only as good as your last meal, or so the saying goes. I was lured back to this restaurant by friends after a bad meal many years ago. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. This little hidden gem ( aka dive in Cyrilldene) really pulled out the stops. You don't go there for the atmosphere or the "silver service", it's the 3 cup chicken, crispy prawns, brown sauce fish and crispy beef that will have you back for more and more.
Popped in for a quick Workers Day lunch. Started with chicken spring rolls which were crispy and light and not oily. The crispy beef and deep fried prawns were tasty and also not oily. Service was quick and staff were helpful. I will go back to explore the menu more.

A real hidden gem. A husband and wife team bring their Chinese and thai roots together to create this fantastic menu. A great place to go with a group of friends and order a few things to share. Don't be put off by the restaurant's facade, the food is good and the portions are generous. A great night out if you're looking for something different.
This place is great and everyone else seems to think so as well, because it's always packed. Everything I've ever order here has been good.
The husband and wife duo make this place really special. Being a vegetarian I was called to kitchen (have to look past the mess) and was given a culinary tour by the chef of the various dishes he could prepare. Have to admit that we went on a week day nite and it was not very busy, so they could afford to give us special attention. Once you get past the plastic chairs and chipped dishes, the meals are really tasty!
The outside ladies room is also quite an experience!

I have been going for years and I have never had a bad meal. It is great for a Sunday lunch with the family. The more people the merrier, more people = more food. Another fabulous thing about this place is that you can bring your own booze!
The menu is just the right size, offering the best Asian food in Cyrildene. The cuisine is a winning combination of Indian and Taiwanese flavours, as this restaurant is run by a Taiwanese and Indian husband wife duo.
Fisherman's plate is known for their crab, the curried crab and the chilli crab are out of this world. Other dishes I order every time I go are:
- The three cup chicken
- The deep fried prawns
- The Chinese-style whole steamed fish (the stuff dreams are made out of)
- The deep fried calamari rings (the dipping sauce is amazing)
- The deep fried beef strips
- The stir-fried vegetables
- The egg fried rice
An unbelievable eating experience, prepared to be wowed.

As a chef, I become frustrated with the latest fashion of "deconstructed' classics and the often unsatisfying small portions that are sold at outrageous prices. What I am always in favour of is simple food done splendidly. My father first took me to this restaurant when I was a child, in his attempt to exposed me to all the food that he saw as “a must eat”. This restaurant became a huge influence in my idea of the perfect meal. Nothing fancy, nothing over the top, just good food, and its kept me coming back ever since. It’s somewhat dingy exterior is what protects its easy going approach to making good food, and as you should only be there for one reason, to stuff your face, it’s simple furnishings and friendly staff make it the perfect place for family meals or a night with your friends. And, after all, where else in Jo’burg are you going to find a dish of belly-busting crab for just over a hundred bucks!
Oh, and just a tip, bring your own napkins ; )

A lovely restaurant, in fact, my best down that drag, everything on the menu is delish! It's not a wang Thai! But you are going to have fun, no frills, just awesome food, the owner, she's crazily lovely! Sizzling steak, crab curry, our favorites! I don't eat at the other places, Oef, but this place is surely worth a visit!

It is always a great feeling when you go to a new, small, simple restaurant and the food absolutely blows you away. Went their with family and we basically ordered everything off the menu and we were not disappointed with any of them. The value for money is fantastic, much more affordable than places like Red Chamber and so much more delicious. The restaurant in itself is lacking in appearance but it seems like the owners are trying to jazz it up, but somehow I feel that it adds to the experience. Would definitely recommend Fisherman's Plate but if you are a snob and only appreciate restaurants that look good then this one is not for you - that is fine by me, more food for me :)

The fisherman's plate at first glance seems rather unappealing. Glaring fluorescent lights, pale green walls, and white plastic garden chairs doesn't paint a picture of delicious food, but if you're able to look beyond that - you'll be in for a treat.
Their signature dish is probably the crab curry, but their sizzling beef and 3 cup chicken are just as good. Their vegetarian options are limited, but if you speak to the owner - she'll be able to assist with something. A word of warning in general with Chinese restaurants though is that often vegetarian dishes contains oyster sauce - so make sure you specify that they should not add that.
The best way to enjoy this restaurant's offerings is in a large group, order one of everything, and everyone shares and tucks in. Very reasonably priced and adequate service, though finding parking might be difficult as this restaurant is tucked in the middle of the new China Town, so you'll need to park on the street, and when busy this might mean having to walk a couple of blocks. They have a limited range of alcoholic beverages, but standard beers and wines are available - but you're welcome to bring your own without corkage charges.

Fisherman's Plate in Cyrildene is a great no fuss Asian food experience, I would recommend that you bring your own bottle of wine and a big group. The interior is strictly bare bones chairs and tables no frills with very bright ligthing. The food is fresh, perfectly cooked and the flavours pack a serious punch!
The cuisine is winning combinations of Indian and Chinese flavours, as this restaurant is owner run by a Chinese & Indian husband wife duo. Fisherman's plate is known for their crab and I can vouch for the Chili Crab.

We have never had a bad meal here! Food is absolutely outstanding. Decor is very rustic and simple but you don’t go there for the decor. Owners Savi and Kevin are always hands on: Savi in the front and Kevin cooking in the kitchen. Would definitely recommend the Deep Fried calamari, Garlic prawns (don’t peel them, eat them whole) Chili chicken and the best Crab curry in SA!

From the sweet prawns to the crumbed calamari, crumbled oyster mushrooms, sizzling steak, veggie noodles. The list goes on. The restaurant and area itself are not great but the food is absolutely worth it.
Very impressive food worth going just for the food.. Decor and appearance would get a 1 star rating but it's the food that u are going for and it's the food that will take u back, had prawns, crab, 7 spice mussels and the sizzling beef over the 2 visits.. I can't say I didn't enjoy any of those meals

Don't let outward appearances fool you - this place packs a punch of flavour. My personal favourites are the calamari and sticky chicken - although others go mad for the crab curry. You can also bring your own wine as the list is limited.
I have been eating at this Restaurant for the past 17 years and it is, for people knowing good food, the absolute best cuisine. It's Taiwanese, not chinese, its most certainly NOT oily food. My favourites from the menu are:

Good food. Favourites are: Crab Curry Sauce, Rice, Deep Fried Garlic Prawns, Chillie Chicken, Calamari. Simple Restaurant. Unpretencious. You can bring your own wine and dessert.
Good food, doesn't look like it from the outside but can recommend the crispy duck and the sweet and sour pork. The spring onion pancakes are quite thick, not for everyone.
We have been here for 4 years in a row for the Chinese New Year celebrations and we all have loved it. Food was great, service a bit slow but understandable and we didn't mind as there was lots happening arround us with the Dragon dancers etc.
No other restaurant in Jhb serves crabs. If they do please let me know. Besides that fact, and being an avid crab/seafood aficionado, i have yet to find the unique blend of spices that make dining at the Fishermans Plate an amazing experience for your palate.
Fisherman's Plate is not an elegant-looking place, but what they don't put into ambience and decor they put into value and flavour for the customer. There are rotating lazy susans on the tables and dishes come out as they're ready and the vibe is all about sharing dishes. The deep-fried calamari starter is a must. For mains do have steamed pak choi, deep-fried garlic prawns, black pepper beef, kung pow chicken (peri-peri warning here, don't have this if you don't like hot dishes) and the crab. The crabs are small but soft and full of meat and flavourful. They have a small wine selection but are cool with you bringing your own wine. The staff are unpretentious and friendly. Always a treat to go to Fisherman's. Arrive hungry and have a feast.
