Review Lua A Bakers Cafe - Johannesburg

Zakiyyah Dickson
Great spot with good service and delicious food, baked goods and beverages. On busier days though, the service can be a little slow but the quality of the food stays the same. Would definitely recommend.

What a gem of a restaurant - so under rated! The atmosphere, food and coffees are exceptional - was blown away by the stunning presentation - a must visit!

Great vibes n wonderful service at this place.. All the way from Randburg to have bfast.. Recommended by my niece who born day is the 31st July

Such a cute little coffee shop! It’s had a refurb since my last visit a long while ago. The coffee was delish and the toasties fresh and tasty. Very generous portion of chips and nice variety of cakes but we didn’t taste them. They had a lot of staff on hand who were very cheery and alert to customers needs. Rose was our waitress who was really lovely and great service!

Lovely intimate garden setting. Blissful in between the light/white decor. Great cappucinos. Great food. Prices fair, some expensive but it is worth it. Come with an expectancy to wait (service is excellent but takes a while)...sit, have more coffee, bring a good book/journal or some company along. Parking is very limited though. A must visit in this busy life!

Nice place to relax... Good service and the food looks great. I do not know if it is value for money because we only had coffee .. Would definitely try the food next time

Still a good spot, though I can't help but feel that Lua has lost some of the charm that made it a favourite.
Myra van den Heever
The atmosphere here is always truly lovely. Friendly staff, gorgeous environment. You almost forget you are on a main road. I have only had breakfast here and only on weekends, but even when it's really busy, the service is excellent and the food doesn't take too long. My mom loves the coffee (especially the one with condensed milk). I keep ordering the same thing because it's so delicious (Wrappi Di Wrap) but I intend to try something else some time. I recommend this place highly.

This is a cute breakfast spot, the menu has great options at a low cost, just make sure you have patience when you visit as it's really busy so service might be slow, Sunday morning seem to be a peak time before 12, great for the whole family.
Domonic H. Ferreira
Beautiful, relaxing, great atmosphere just to wind down and enjoy a lovely meal. A menu with a big variety to choose from ... something for everyone. Sit inside or outside either way the atmosphere is relaxing. Love the little shop great new addition to Lua's. The staff is friendly and professional.

Great little place with a beautiful setting Inviting courtyard, with plenty of trees, bringing in a natural, inviting feel to pair with your meal of choice. Very interesting menu with lots of different items for foodies to sink their teeth into. Great selection of sweet and savoury waffles. Vetkoek, all day breakfast accompanied by a good selection of coffees to satisfy your tastebuds.

Lua is a family friendly restaurant that has a wide variety menu. The staff are very friendly and attentive to all of their guests. Food is delicious and filling and definitely worth the money.
Johan Scheepers
What a lovely place this was. The staff was friendly and the food was great! The burger is a big one with a nice home made patty. The pepper steak pie was tasty although I would have liked to have a full puff pastry pie and not one in a cup. But it was still delicious! The milkshakes are amazing. You have to try them!! Loved the garden atmosphere and will definitely be back!

Amazing food and friendly staff

The morning at Lua was well-spent. We were welcomed by one of the servers, who allowed us to pick our outdoor table. Along the way the other servers greeted us friendly. After we were seated, the friendly server was on hand, taking our order for drinks, which was served quickly, and took our oders for breakfast. I was still enjoying the open air and sound of falling water, when our server brought our orders - a farm house breakfast, and egg baskets. My companions enjoyed the egg baskets, and my farm house breakfast was really one of the best breakfast I had in long time.

Such a lovely place in the South, which is sych a lovely and pleasant surprise seeing as all the breakfast spots are in the North (boma Parkhurst). Best breakfast.

🚙: Free Parking 💰: RR My friend introduced to this cute little café in the South of Johanneburg.💎 They have a inside and outside seating area. The outside area is super cute with a bunch of rose bushes and lavender plants. Their food and drinks menu far exceeded my expectations for such a small little place. 🙇🏻‍♀️🌷 I couldn’t decide between their of variety of sweet and savoury Belgium waffles. I will definitely go back to try the rest of what they have to offer on their menu. Follow @zesti_reviews on Instagram for more reviews! ——-

Some Staff is unfriendly and have attitude. If they spill your drink the won’t clean the glass so my glass www sticky. I really love this vibes and atmosphere.

I have never allowed myself to experience the level of savagery that was brought out of me because of how amazing my breakfast was. I didn’t know what I wanted when I got there and the manager, Moses, asked me what I’m looking for and I told he what I like and he just said: “No, I’ll sort you out!” And so he did, he got me a meaty platter, which unlocked absolutely savagery - after seeing this Moses went to the back and warmed up a cloth for me and brought it to me so I could wipe away all the mess that was caused by my savagery, on my face and hands - he did this, without me even asking for it. Knew exactly what I needed and served me so amazingly. Amazing amazing place!

I dont get out much as I run a very busy business. My man and I popped in for an impulsive lunch. What an amazing Tuesday afternoon we just had! Food was delicious, portions generous, staff were great. Felt relaxed and could have sat for the rest of the arvie. Very happy to have spent my off time in a lovely spot. Turkish Delight cheesecake... yum yum yum!!

Hidden gem this! Popped in this morning and boy am I glad to have tried this place out. Quaint and warm establishment. I relished every morsel of my Eggs Benedict, the eggs were just right, my dainty cappuccino delightful! I was pleasantly surprised by the arty crockery in lieu of the common white china one has become accustomed to. Oh and the food presentation too was on point! Nice one :)

We had a 60th birthday breakfast and it was awesome!!! The staff were great and the food was perfect! Thank you so much for making this day extra special!!!!!

We have eaten here a few times before they are always fairly slow. Today was absolutely ridiculous though, had to ask the waiter more than once for everything that we ordered. The food took ages to arrive. When it eventually arrived I asked for butter and was told they didn't have any, we ordered cool drinks, the cans looked a bit rusted so I looked at the expiry date and the cool drinks had already expired. I asked for the bill and thought it seemed a bit high, they had charged us for a bottle of wine and not a glass. I asked to speaker to a manager and the waiter told us he was the manager. Many other people were also complaining looking for an owner or manager. It seems shocking that on your busiest day of the week there was nobody with authority to take care of the customers. Really disappointed.

Loved everything about Lua! The garden setting, beautifully presented food: perfectly poached Eggs Benedict & interesting biltong strawberry salad. The desserts leave you in awe...we decided on a chocolate Bar-one & Oreo cheesecake ...Wow! Our waitress Precious was phenomenal ,friendly ,attentive- on point with her service. The car guard outside was just as polite .my 2nd time there and I enjoyed spending the morning with my mom and son at such a special place!
Khanyisile Mnyakeni
I have been there a couple of times. Beautiful setting, the service is great, the food is good. I would definitely recommend it.
Sivonne Steyn
We had such a fun time! Great coffee, friendly, helpful staff. Amazing food. To die for oreo cheesecake. Thank you for making our visit so special.
Lynette Erlank
We went there for coffee and later back for lunch. Ambiance is great, service was good and the coffee and food excellent. Thanks for a great time.
Yolindi Louw
Went to Lua for Mother’s Day and the food was fantastic! Love the home cooked style of today’s menu!
Melinda Venter
Service terrible and the food even worse. Such a pity, used to be a nice place but it looks like the wheels are coming off. Won't ever go back.
Petro Combrink
The best breakfast in town! Excellent service from the friendliest waiter. Our alltime favourite spot.
Hantie Terblanche
Yesterday was a lovely mellow day. I was quickly helped to a table and my order for a drink while waiting for my friend was served as speedily. We both made changes to what we ordered and it was complied with. Very tasty and beautifully served, waited not too long, friendly and efficient waiter. Thank you!
Kamo Mpshane
The place has such potential, but the service is completely horrible. The waiters we so flustered. We waitied over an hour for our food, after constantly asking for it. Table next to us kept on asking about their bill for up 30 mintutes. People kept on vacating the other tables as they had waited so long. There was no manager, no owner to sort out the issues. Horrid service. When the owner finally arrived after being called to address the service issues, he blamed everything on the waiters. Not taking any responsibility for his lack of proper planning or management. Im so disgusted
Daniela Brancato
Went there today for a 60th birthday and it was an absolute treat! Moses is outstanding. The professionalism displayed by all at Lua was admirable and they really managed the event wonderfully. Thank you for everything.

Mooiste plekkie en die nuwe spyskaarte so mooi gedoen. Beste koffie.

Love this little coffee shop. Best koeksisters ever.
Suanne Pahl
Beautiful setting. Shockingly slow service. Definitely would not recommend the cafe to anyone.

We had my daughter Natalie's baby shower today. It was a breakfast. It was a truly amazing day. Food and service all in order. Thank you for making it special for all of us. Well done to the amazing staff.

My friends organised my bachelorette there this past Saturday and it was great, the food & service! Great venue for a kitchen tea!
Lynette Potgieter
Good service & food. Nice garden atmosphere. Interesting menu.

Service was good and food even better.. we had a great time.. Not disappointed at all.. live it

Awesome place! Awesome food!

Have been to Lua a couple of times now and the food has been great. When first looking at the menu it might seem pricey, but the portions and quality of food is absolutely worth what you pay. I am always willing to pay for quality ❤. In saying that, I feel the food takes a tad bit long to come out so not exactly a spot you can have a quick lunch during your break which is a total shame. Food aside, the ambiance is just out of this world. The space they have created here is rustic but chic giving you that cozy country feel. In summary, if you are looking for a beautiful lunch or breakfast spot to catch up with some friends and have great food in Meyersdal, this is your spot.
Bryan
This is definitely the place for you if you want something laid back and different. The views of the 'secret garden' is calming and the food is worth the wait, it definitely did not disappoint.

If you are after a typical fast pace of the more common franchise setups this is one to avoid, but if you want to meet up and have a relaxing visit with people you care about this is definitely a great place. We loved it!!!
Luis Pires
Pleasant staff. Two of us. Waited 1hour for the food. I had the crumpets stack. While it was tasty, wrong ingredient combination. Cream cheese with crumpets becomes a sticky dough in your mouth.
Margaret Barros
I met my friend for brunch a few Sundays ago and what a treat! The atmosphere, service, presentation of the food was superb. The waitron left us to chat and was on hand but not intrusive. Well done guys.
Bindia Bhana
Omg! Amazing food, awesome atmosphere and just perfect for a brunch. I cannot express just how much we loved the food😍🤩 definitely a hidden gem
Louwredmond
To be honest i was expecting a bit more after hearing so much. There were six of us in total and we waited 50 minutes for breakfest which i think i think is very long. I also noticed that the breakfasts are very highly priced compared to other outlets in neighboring areas. Their carrot cake and strawberries pancakes were very tasty.
Sue Marsden
Went to Lua today to celebrate Fathers Day with family. Drinks for 6 people, 5 basic coffees and a fruit juice came at three different times. After approaching management 3 times about none delivery of breakfast 1.5 hours after we had sat down still nothing!! Eventually had to leave with no food. Rude unapologetic service and won’t be visiting again.
Björn Luciano Salsone
Have you been to try their new winter menu? It has something old (classic dishes) something new (lots of yummy new foods), something borrowed (that’s the friend you take along) and something blue (menu colours). Just devine.

More at:
Twitter.com/bjornsalsone
Instagram.com/bjornsalsone
Facebook.com/bjorn.salsone
#Bjornslife

If you are looking for a coffee shop with a really nice garden ambiance then this is the place. The staff here are really friendly too. The food was fresh and quite good. I did find the food a bit salty to my taste. The portion sizes are great and variety is good.
PrinishaM 💋
Made a quick stop here to try out their cakes, it was a take away order. I ordered the Carrot Cake and Oreo Cheesecake. Both cakes were fresh and tasted really nice. The service was also good. My son seemed to have also taken to the place, probably because of the pond.

I will definitely revisit, next time for longer and enjoy their breakfast or lunch 😊
Zane Fabricius
Most pathetic service possible. Food took 2 hours. Spent 4 hours there for a Xmas lunch with mother and sister. Possible our worst experience ever. Cindy the owner makes no effort to hear if the patrons are satisfied. I had to go and complain and apologies galore. Never again. No wonder Alberton has never had any good coffee shops or restaurants.
Stephen Brits
Me and my wife always drove past this gem everyday on the way to work and back. Finally decided to go in and see whats happening. What we found was a break away from urban life, with a homey feel to it. Just had a breakfast but it was amazingly good and Lua will have us coming back for more! Well done guys, a peaceful, friendly, and awesome place.
Nick
Been there a couple of times as this spot is conveniently situated close to work.
Unfortunately it would appear as though the waiters lack proper training. Management seems to be absent which is probably why the waiters don't have much guidance.
The outdoor setting is nice.
Often items on the menu are not available and the food is pretty average
Santana De Melo
Really good food, fresh and affordable. Lovely setting but the worst possible service I have ever received. Waited 10 minutes to be given menus. Waitress never came to our table, I had to constantly go find someone to order. Very disappointing as their food really is good. Also felt as though the 'big' table next to us was given tons of attention from staff and management and we were not looked after at all. Waitress was friendly but so so slow.
Sherice Herbert
This little gem has become our favorite breakfast escape in the south. A very homey feel with an almost rustic element to it. Very laid back and elegant at the same time. Coffee, milkshake and any breakfast, we have tried them all. they ALL are amazing. The staff are friendly, but service can be slow at some times.
Debbie McMillan
What a great gem in the middle of Meyersdal. The decor is lovely and the garden area is tranquil; the perfect spot for a coffee catch up or a chilled cocktail. The service is efficient and friendly.
I ordered the tuna panini but was informed that the panini's were sold out so it was replaced with rye bread which was delicious -tuna served with crisp apple and toast almonds was a first for me but definitely not a last.
Wade Mounter
The staff in this place is a joke. They can't understand, they don't listen properly, they don't even remember who ordered what meal. The food looks good and well presented but you don't get what you ordered. When you question what you ordered the waiter tells you you wrong.

Definitely not a place to visit again
Natalie De Canha
This place is so pretty 😍🌸
Definitely a girls brunch / lunch / tea date kind of vibe! Our waiter handled our big birthday table of demanding portuguese ladies really well 😂👏
The stewed fruit and yogurt was a really interesting option and peaked my curiosity, although I soon realised a bit too sweet for me 🙈 but everything else was incredibly fresh and well presented!

But lets be honest, the best thing about brunch / birthdays = MIMOSAAAAASSSS :D
Definitely do that here.

This is one of the most delightful little eateries in Johannesburg... the decor is charming and the garden setting enchanting... you literally get to sit under the trees. The service was great and I have to say I was so glad that they did not have their vegetarian salad option available. As a vegan I was given an opportunity to create a salad, and it was sublime! I strongly urge the management to add my salad to the menu... it is definitely on of the best salads I have had in any restaurant in Johannesburg... I will be returning to Lua - for this meal!
Daniel
Very beautiful place, nice setup. I ordered bangers n mash and the sausages were not well cooked. Showed the waiter and was only told sorry. Manager didn't even come and at least explain. Just do drinks when it's too full cause I don't think they can handle pressure. Otherwise I had a good craft beer - African something.

A beautifully kept secret in the south of Jhb, Cafe Lua offers a tranquil setting to have a light meal. Nestled in a converted house, there's a choice of sitting inside or in the rose and (mostly) edible garden - boasting an impressive display of limes, lemons and berries. Shady and sunny spots offered outside, and something on the menu for everyone.
I chose the French toast, but asked for it with a croissant, as well as a coffee with condensed milk. Lovely experience!
Saaleha Bhamjee
Lovely little hidden spot. The garden setting is great. Decor quite lovely. The food was okay. Not entirely flavourless. But a bit lacking.
Bought cake to bring home.
I don't recommend you do that. The cakes aren't great
Michelle Ferreira
Excellent coffee shop, personal and unique, love the garden and the atmosphere :)

If you are looking for a cosy personal place to meet this is the one for you..
Megan Van Der Merwe
This restaurant is a real hidden treasure and a great place to have breakfast. Best French toast EVER! Great service, very clean and amazing food. We will definitely be back.
Hesti Botha
Very cute and intimate little coffee shop with the best eats and treats. We had a baby shower there and the cakes was to die for. Bit to take away anything from the aromatic coffees.
Akira Wing
Lua has a lovely outdoor garden area which is perfect for a chilled brunch outing. The service was slow the first time I came here a while ago, but today our waiter was friendly and on the ball.

Their breakfast options we tried in the past were really good. We had the eggs benedict and the French toast. This time we shared a Farm Yard (which had chicken mayo, bacon and avo) and a Bacon and Brie sandwich. Both were excellent, and the bacon is cooked really well. I also really enjoyed the Brie and caramelised pear in the B and B sandwich, it was really different and the flavours went so well together. I also think opting for ciabatta in the sandwiches over the plain white or brown was the better option. Everyone else was also very pleased with their meals.

I was a bit disappointed with their chocolate volcano milkshake. It looks so impressive but the shake itself didn't have a nice flavour at all. Someone else ordered the peanut butter milkshake and it was much tastier, just not as fancy.
Debbie
This coffee shop is in a beautiful shady garden setting which also has an indoor section for rainy or cold weather. The food was nicely presented and delicious.
Sergi Passos
Recently went there for breakfast. I was quite taken a aback by their pricing strategy considering the descriptions of their breakfasts did not match up. I would suggest more descriptive write ups and origins of ingredients. If I'm paying R90 for a breakfast at least mention what kind of cheese is in the meal.

The waitress and barista did not know what a Flat White was. If you are selling coffee beverages please be clued up on coffee strategy and preparation techniques. Very disappointing.
Lisa
Lua has the perfect setting and perfect location but it is not utilized as it should be. If the menu was better and the cakes were nicer then I would visit a lot more often. I have been here a few times and each time I have left disappointed. Service is slow, staff is just weak and untrained.
Travis Campbell
This delightful little cafe hidden in the middle of Meyersdal serves up some great food and has a very homey feel.

I had a bowl of their homemade veggie soup which was very tasty as well as a cup of their filter coffee. The soup was scrumptious and hit the spot, however I found the coffee to be quite acidic and watery.

The service was fantastic and our waiter was a star. Our food came quick from the kitchen and everything was done with a smile.

Keen to come back and try out a couple other dishes, especially the saucy meatball sandwich which sounds mind blowing.
Samantha Moodley
Nice chilled venue. Simple but tasty food. Exceptional service, the staff are so friendly and accommodating! Only wish is that the breakfast menu was a bit more extensive...
Simone Buckley
Went for a scone and coffee but they didn't have scones. Food looks good but nothing to write home about. Service is slow and parking is a nightmare
Bene Katabua
Met with a friend here this morning. I had the pain perdu, and she had the pumpkin filo tartlet. My meal was good, I liked the berry compote as a substitute for syrup. The tartlet was the winner tho, those flavours and textures. Ridiculously delicious. The carrot cake is nothing to write home about, average. But the frosting was yum!
Hassan Cassim
Great atmosphere. Ideal summer venue with tables out in the garden. Best selection of cheesecakes in the south of Johannesburg. Service is always good.
Micaela Rodrigues
Very nice restaurant especially because it is outside. Food was not spectacular although the plating up was very cute! Will definitely visit again for a nice day out with the girls
Kevin Boshoff
We have been here probably close to a dozen times before and always had a great experience. This time around, the food took forever, the order came out wrong and the waiter did not even offer to rectify! The food was ok but when you wait this long for the food its hard enjoy! The ham served with eggs Benedict tasted very bad! Had to ask for cutlery, and not even once was asked if we would like a drink. Not sure if this is just a bad day at Lua, but the standards are definitely not what we have become accustomed to!
Chantelle Diane Sikic
Charming set up, relaxing atmosphere... Really interesting menu as well as presentation of food. Menu is pricey but you are paying for good food. Variety of cocktails on offer too.
Lönngren Prinsloo
There are many things that count in this quaint little shop's favour: the decor is appealing, the food is wonderful, the setting even more so. My only peeve is that the menu is extremely busy (font wise) and that our service on the day was a bit lacklustre, but these are minor details. I would definitely visit again!
Monique Da Silva
Why haven't I been here before? So unexpectedly beautiful, with a choice to be seated in the gorgeous gardens outside or inside in the dainty, airy and homey-feel atmosphere. The perfect place for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, with a variety of home-made baked good. Everything is original and elegantly presented.
Tracy
I feel quite foolish for not having tried this local cafe sooner. It is a true gem. I popped in for a lunch on a winter afternoon and decided to sit outside in the beautiful garden. The inside is equally appealing with touches of french design and a homey atmosphere. Everything at Lua is original and homemade. After browsing the menu that included a variety of delectable sandwiches, breakfasts, homemade quiche and pie, I enjoyed the Greek sandwich and a pot of tea, so beautifully presented in a vintage tea pot.

Service is friendly and efficient. I can't wait to return to try all the other intriguing dishes on this menu. The baked good are also truly something to behold and worth the return on their own.
The Hungry Blonde
Out favorite hide out. You can always count on a delicious meal from the wonderful team at lua's!

Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a garden brunch or breakfast!
Carla Nel
Charming little place in a beautiful setting. Very friendly owner. However, in order for them to ensure customers keep coming back they will have to improve on the efficiency and speed of their waiting staff. Also, with such a creative menu I was expecting a little more from the food. Lua has the perfect venue... Now they just need the experience to match.
Qondiso
A lil' bit of heaven is found in this place. The garden is well maintained and the atmosphere here will definitely make you think of coming back again. You get a chance to be treated like a king, with a variety of bakes available, you can just pull out your laptop or tablet and surf the net using the free wi-fi available for guests while having the best coffee for life.

It's definitely a place to try out and have no regrets at all!
Candice
My kind of "tea garden"! Really enjoy a catch up with friends and delicious freshly baked scones. Lua Cafe is cosy and the staff are very friendly.
Mariaan Puddlejumper
Lovely little restaurant with a unique menu! Freshly baked cakes.. A nice venue for a lovely brunch or secretary's day! I think the owner's got a little gem here and the little cafe will go far
Jason Cyle Solomon
The atmosphere is one of the best the south has to offer, a beautiful garden paired with French music and trickling water.

It is a great place to sit in the sun or under a tree. Their food is exceptional and so are their beverages and cakes.

The only downside is the price, their menu is very pricey but you do get what you pay for.

Their Turkish delight and carrot cake are my favorite.
Marcelle Johnson
Quaint countryhouse themed restaurant in the south of Jhb,a beautiful garden with secluded patios all round. The decor is a hodge podge of found chairs, tables and furnshings, some of which is for sale. The staff are friendly, venue is clean and there is the sweet smell of baking in the morrow. I enjoyed the eggs benedict with extra mince and a large steaming latte. The eggs benedict was great, quite a large portion size and exactly what I needed in the early hours. I've previously had scones for takeaway breakfast with cheese, and jam and cream which were huge and very tasty. I'd recommend it for an early morning breakfast.
Justin Faill
Intimate setting with great brunch. Very cosy place to go on a coffee date. Parking is a bit limited but otherwise a very nice hidden gem in the south.
Sherilyn Onslow
The first time I went to Lua was for a birthday brunch and had been excited about it all week. They had a great menu of brunchie items and although it was a hard choice I eventually settled on French toast, bacon and brie with an amazing caramelish sauce. Although the food was amazing and I'd give the chefs a big thumbs up the service was very poor. It took forever for our food to come and the waitress was very much in her own world. I had said at the time that with improved waitressing staff and faster service this brunch spot would be a complete hit. I went back this past weekend with my boyfriend and was very pleased to find that the service had improved tremendously and the manager even came around to offer us blankets if we were cold. I give them a big thumbs up for the improvement in service and will always give them a thumbs up for their delicious food!

I added some extra photos from my next visit too.
Eat Like A King
Came to Lua on Monday 6th of April. I've wanted to come to this place ever since it opened because it looks so appealing from the outside. As soon as I walked in I noticed how beautifully the place had been renovated. We got a cute table inside and the menu made an impression. The food was no more than average and didn't deliver what it said on the menu. The eggs in the benedict were under poached and the hollandaise wasn't rich and creamy at all. The burger bun was soggy and the chicken quiche smelt strangely fishy and we had to ask to change it to the spinach quiche instead. We did however enjoy the pie and salad we had. It's such a pitty because the place has so much potential but a restaurant is only as good as the food - which proved to be nothing special. Hopefully the milkshakes and cake will be better ✊

Very nice little place in the south of Joburg.Great breakfast loved the eggs Benedict , good coffee and a nice simplistic vibe . On Sundays only open from 8 and not 7 . Service with a smile :-)

Cute little café. It's nice and simple and the food is good too. Perfect for a quick breakfast or lunch meeting or a cup of coffee and catch up with a friend...

Food is very very good! And the Cafe has a good vibe. I just was not satisfied with the waiter service as we waited long and they wasn't that busy
