Review Super Sconto - Johannesburg

First visit in years. Located in a difficult position, but worth the effort. Freshly made pasta and pannini. Great coffee and can shop in the Deli after eating. Really worth a visit.

Excellent store and restaurant, a little gem on Louis Botha Ave. It's spotlessly clean and food is well priced and most enjoyable

Lovely store, been coming here for a few years now. They have a large variety of pastas, biscuits and authentic Italian products. Very affordable and overall a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff.

Bought Carciofini and Panini to take home. Had Melanzane alla Parmigiana. Excellent. To drink I had San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa and a Cappuccino. One of the best cappuccino I must say.
Bella Dona

Awesome atmosphere brilliant food, a taste of unique different a must experience

I got this spaghetti or macaroni, it's long and it's tubular so it's a hybrid pasta... I'm excited about it, good coffee, and if you like a square slice as much as I do it's very good pizza
Michael Flinn
Authentic taste of Italy, great daily special and a true Italian shopping experience.
Natasha Hatzis

Super Sconto is the best place to go for all Italian groceries and friendly, helpful staff
Malcolm David Burroughs
What a fantastic hidden gem with stunning quality and unbelievably good prices.

Never knew this place existed until a good Italian friend told me about it and took my wife and myself there on Saturday. Needless to say we will be eating pasta for at least a month. Nice variety of products and good service. 2.5Kg tins of tomatoes kept us busy in the kitchen on Sunday.

My best! I'm there every weekend :-) It's fun! Great coffee! Great pizza on a Saturday morning but be sure to get there early! It sells out quickly!
Gabi Pisanello
They also make delicious lunches from Tuesday onwards. Their pasta dishes are to die for!! Love their range of products and seasonal goodies.

Raybans stolen from the table this past weeeknd left a very negative impression on a restaurant I once enjoyed. Staff and management dealt with the situation by giving me a shrug of their shoulders. To the person that took them, I can only hope you needed them more than i did.... Maybe one day someone will take something of yours to know how i felt :(

Oh my word this is heaven!
Carol Dotto de Dauli

I enjoy every minute i spend at Sconto. The products available there are of superior quality at good prices. Parking is often a problem in a shady area but everything else is excellent.

So all the old Italian toppies go here because it's food that reminds them of the 60's when imagination had not been invented yet. I ordered a pasta and the dinner lady (it is a canteen btw) completely lost interest whilst applying sauce to pasta. I mistakenly offered to pay for some bread to scoop up the 2 litres of sauce but I was abruptly told that they had completely run out. So I ordered a panino from the deli which, believe it or not, had bread on both the top and the underside which did a fairly decent job of absorbing most of my pasta oil spill. Oh, and my pasta should of had ANC-hovies but when it came to the table the ANC-hovies broke their promise and were no where to be found. Go figure.

Love this place. Well worth the trip to Louis Botha Ave. Awesome Italian supermarket downstairs and authentic Italian deli and coffee shop upstairs. Great panini and super friendly staff. Best part..in the supermarket you can find Trieste ice cream 😊

Unfortunately our experience fell way short of the expectations. We ordered some pasta (dry and filled) and we were told that all the pasta dishes were not available... this was unacceptable for an Italian outlet. We then opted for an antipasto misto (mixed cold cuts) and the service received was probably one of the worst I ever experienced. The ladies at the counter were rude and seemed uninterested in serving the clients. Once they delivered our food to the table along with the crockery, cutler and drinks, everything was literally dumped on the corner of our table and we had to sort things out ourselves. If it was not for the Italian products (which I find good quality) I would never come back to this restaurant. Guys, time to wake up and focus on training of your staff and be more customer-centric.

Unfortunately their flag ship Italian rolls with fillings of your choice are actually their downfall, the bread rolls are as hard as rock and you need a hammer and chisel to eat it, the coffee is first class.

This is just the best place for real authentic italian food at its best . Obsessed with the food here... its simple ,fresh ,homemade and so cheap.

The anti pasta is a must have with their fresh homemade breads.

Pasta is just simple yet incredible !
Ita spotless so clean and always well stocked. Service is ok could be friendlier but its not the worst thing.

I just wish the kitchen stayed open longer during the week and that they made hot meals on weekend's . My only complaint is the operating times!
I've said it before but I'll say it again for those in the nosebleed seats... I'm a sucker for good bread.
Pauls... is good, but Sconto does panini and ciabata that is unparalleled in south africa. Crispy crust and tough soft fresh interior it just has win all over.

High quality imported cured meats and cheeses along with the best veg selection. Proper rude italian service and dismissive attitude you feel like its nonnas house.
Oh yes and the coffee is basically better than any other coffee in this coffee purgatory of a city. Shove it starbucks.
You can also get Italian stuff like those fried rissotto balls, authentic pizza, homestyle lasagne better than most mommas make. (Not mine, but most)
The place is clean and stark but it hums with local community members. Its a win unless you don't like bread, cheese, italian coffee and basically have no substance.
I would give it a 5 but the attitude can get a bit much and also they run out of bread on occasion.

My daughter Theresa, Nonna Louisa and myself, (Adriana) went to Super Sconto as a treat. Theresa said she wanted to see us 3 generations at one table. I tell you this Italian couple who own and run this establishment are amazing folk. You are greeted with a smile, assisted with a menu. Everything is "MAGNIFICO"... I would love to see a Super Sconto branch in Cape Town... That would be so cool... LOVE THAT PLACE, LOVE THE MEMORY BEING WITH MY MOM AND DAUGHTER... FANTASTICO!!!

Went to get Parma Ham on Friday 13th Jan. Service, non-existant, Attitude by woman behind counter, disgraceful, "if you lucky" she tells me! manager non-chalant!

The hidden gem...

The Super market where one can pick up propper Italian brodo cubes.. Whole anchovies and tomatoes by the case has a surprise upstairs.
Propper traditional Italian food. Go buy ome supplies and enjoy a great lunch. Just as if you were in any good trattoria in Italy.

So this is the most amazing restaurant in Joburg! We have been eating there for a number of years and eat there regularly. The food is always tasty with generous portions. The coffee is the best in town! The management are always friendly and available. We always feel at home. Due to the new road closures it is not easy to enter and exit but it is well worth the deviation!
Alexis
Always pop in here for a quick lunch and some Parma ham of course!! It's a quiet place to go and sit. The sandwiches and pasta are delicious here. Down stairs they have a small grocery store were you can buy amazing pastas you can't find anywhere else and loads more. Give it a try...it's worth it!
Gigliola Conte-Patel
This is an authentic Italian deli, they have a fantastic range of Italian cured meat and cheeses. One of my favourite cheeses to buy from Super Sconto is a soft cheese called Strachino - its fantastic on a fresh bread roll. You can also purchase some other delights such as cotechino, fresh porcini mushrooms, imported salame. Anyone who loves Italian food needs to visit this place.

A classic Italian delicatessen hidden in a small building just off busy Louis Botha Ave.

It's really great to pop by and purchase some truly Italian ingredients imported from Italy and then venture upstairs to have a fresh plate of pesto pasta (my favorite).

Great place to go for a quick, fresh, healthy hearty Italian lunch. Sandwiches are absolutely great. They don't toast them which is great... You can really savour all the flavours of Italy! Reasonably priced, quick, and very tasty. Downstairs they have all the best Things from Italy... The place has a bit of a canteen vibe, nice and clean and I think one of the best lunch spots in Jozi. Will definitely be back soon!

Another diamond in the rough- not exactly the prettiest restaurant but what it lacks in looks it makes up for with excellent Italian food. If you want a different lunch experience and happen to be near Norwood/Orange Grove give it a try!
Joanna Socha Haralambous
Hearty Italian food like nonna makes! The buffalo mozarella and mortadella panini is delicious and good value for money. Don't expect a trendy restaurant atmosphere but rather a backstreet cafe/bistro in the heart of Rome.
Philip Duffy
Strange place to go and eat, but I've been buying from the grocery and deli for years, but don't eat often enough upstairs. Must say the food is always fresh and tasty, whether it's panini or pasta whatever mmmmmmmmm really recommend and you won't regret spending the time, also inexpensive, give it a bash.

This place seems interesting, and is unexpectedly pleasant for Louis Botha Avenue, while the supermarket seems to be a great place to pick up imported Italian groceries. I really, really wanted to like the place for ideological reasons as well, since they haven't joined the "white flight" from Louis Botha Avenue.

Sadly, however, the upstairs restaurant is let down by an opaque menu, and most of the menu items were not available at 9:30 on a Saturday morning (breakfast items only available Monday-Friday and it was too early for the lunch menu, which is also only available on weekdays as well). Other people seemed to be eating stuff, but short of interrupting their meals (which I didn't do) what was available for order was a mystery to me.

It was almost impossible to know what to order, and the lady who served us behind the counter was either clueless or disinterested. I suppose that if a customer is knowledgable about Italian food, this won't be a problem. Maybe I'll have to go back on a weekday.

I just had a coffee since I didn't know what to order. No point in having a great restaurant with wonderful ingredients (if the reviews are to be believed) if customers don't know what to order.

The table waitress seemed quite disinterested and slow as well.

Tesoro! Pure and simple Italian, when I'm feeling all Tony S! Fresh out the oven Panini and Ciabatta to make the perfect sandwich from the many choices of fillings. The Espresso and Cappucino are right up there with the best in Joburg. Ciao

One of Joburg's best kept secrets! A hidden gem amongst the bustling Louis Botha avenue. Home style italian cooking that is simply delicious. No fuss, just good food. We can't leave till we've had a slice of their tiramisu. Must try!

Amazing fresh bruschetta sandwiches and the best cappuccino in JHB! The cold meat cuts imported from Italy example coppa, and mortadella wow can't get better in SA.Guys this is a must and also stock up on Italian Groceries.

I was actually floored by this place the first time I walked in. Because it is on Louis Botha it looks like a dingy office building grom the outside but is great inside. Similar to a woolies vibe. The ground floor is a full Italian supermarket and upstairs is a deli and cafe. I had the pesto fettucine. Tge pesto was light, fresh and was just right for tge mood I was in. Definitely somewhere to pop your head into if you are just driving past.
Struan De Bellelay-Bourquin
Real, fresh Italian food! Great breads, cured meats and cheeses. The supermarket is fantastic too, they have loads of imported Italian goods including 00 tipo flour and fine ground semolina which is hard to find but perfect for making pasta and pizza dough!

Italian home cooking (mama's in the kitchen) at its simple best.

Upstairs from the supermarket it is worth the stop

Make up your own Panini or choose one of the specials (lasagne etc.) have a good cup of coffee and chill.

Whenever we need difficult to find Italian ingredients Super Sconto is the shop, and the deli the place to eat.
Gabriella Di Clemente
Super Sconto is a hidden treasure. Appealing to more than just the Italians, one can pick the ingredients for their panini at the deli. Friendly service and staff that knows most of their regular clients by name, one can enjoy a bite and then have the opportunity to buy those exact same ingredients. A must for all foodies!
Shannon Niebuhr
Situated above an Italian grocery store on Louis Botha, you might not know this cafe exists. Climb the stairs to find Super Sconto the cafe and you'll enjoy a wonderful breakfast or lunch straight out of Italy. You'll know by eavesdropping and hearing all the European languages, especially since the median age of the clients is about 62.

I love the marinated artichokes, so I sometimes order just a plate of those, which is a bit unusual. Other people go for the sliced salami and cheese, in a sandwich or on a salad. I think you can't leave without trying their espresso, if you're a coffee drinker. This is the real stuff.

Super Sconto has more kinds of meats, olives, and cheeses available than I know what to do with. So I sample small plates and then get some to take home. Because it's a deli, you can just try 100 g of this or that.

Downstairs, see the huge jars of capers, tins of olive oils, and bags of imported pasta.

The atmosphere of Super Sconto is plain: white tile floors, brown tables, and a view over the rooftops of Louis Botha to the ridge and the sky behind. So pay attention to what's important: the food on your plate! And the conversation with the friend you've brought to discover this hidden gem.
