Review Milk Bar - Johannesburg

Nicolas Pignol
First the courtyard: you get in an amazing atmosphere and give you the chance to shed some of the city stress. Second the food: great selection and taste fresh. Last the coffee and the bill: both reasonable. Then on to shopping at Amatuli. How I miss my lunches at the Milk bar !

Milk bar parkmore, had a lovely evening with great live entertainment! My fave cocktail the African Star didn't dissapoint! If I may say though that the service could have been a bit better, spent a good portion of the evening trying to get a waiters attention. However overall good experience, will be back!

Love the quirky décor, the background music is awesome, and you have a pick of couch or chair to sit on. If you are tired of going to the same old franchise restaurant that looks and feels the same as a 100 others I recommend you try Milkbar for a breath of fresh air. I enjoy the coffee (but I'm no coffee connoisseur) and the menu has a nice variety of light meal options (which to date has more than satisfied my taste buds). Best place to meet a couple of friends for brunch or for someone to take a "me time" moment. Service is always very friendly if not always as on point as one would wish.

An absolutely fantastic restaurant. Incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. Fabulous food! Great location. Would high recommend as a venue for a function too!

Milk bar Rosebank! From the bottom of this ditsy blondes heart, I thank you! You used your initiative and went above and beyond to call my bank and get my bag and ALL it's contents back to me! I would still be looking for it!!! Have faith South Africa there is always something to be positive about! Mango I will be back to say thank you soon!

Milk Bar Parkmore - I had my birthday here on Saturday and I just wanna thank you for an awesome day. Samantha our waitress was beyond exceptional - she managed to serve all of us on her own, knew people’s tabs by name and we didn’t wait longer than 5 minutes for a drink. Everyone enjoyed the food too. And thank you to the manager for checking in constantly. Great service, great venue!

Fabulous experience delicious food. Loved the shop behind the coffee shop, lovely old furniture and artifacts. Worth a visit.

Thank you for a fantastic Quiz Night Evening at Milk Bar Rosebank. We had such a great time. Food was great, cocktails even better. Will most definitely join you again.

Excellent food.. Great drinks... Awesome music and unique eclectic Mozambique -inspired style! Will definitely be back! 😊

The service was non existent and when there was a glimpse of it, it was arrogant and rude. My granola, fruit salad and yogurt eventually arrived as a cup full of yogurt and honey, topped with 4 slices of a pathetic strawberry sans the granola. The manager tried his best to rectify the situation but I sense that he's trying to save the titanic from sinking all in his own with one tiny little bucket. They won't see me again. K thanks buy Felicia

Pleasant. Good cappuccino. Interesting food. To move from good to great, all I ask is a newspaper being available :-)

One of the best chicken prego's in a long time .

Awesome vibe, food and stunning live music!! Watching Will Rayz was such an awesome way to end the night! Will definitely be returning!
Danielle Anne Laity
Amazing ambience, service system is bad and food wasn't according to menu (ordered Parma ham and got something else without being told).
Robert Uys
Nice and quiet during breakfast time. Breakfast was a delicious sweetpotatobread with eggs, avocado and humus. Loved the decor and service was great too.
Kim Alison Jansen
Great event on Friday night! Thank you Rob and Mango for catering to all our requests. We thoroughly enjoyed the venue, the food and the service was exemplary.

A nice place to stop for a meal after doing some
furniture shopping in Kramerville. Located below Katy's Palace.

I highly recommend the flat breads and the cheesecake. Service is sometimes lacking and there is lots of parking.
Yajna
Small cafe vibe. Great for a lunch pit stop during the work week. Easy going, casual setting and freshly made tasty options on the menu. Really enjoy the flat breads and the chicken pregos.

Such a sweet, out of the way little cafe. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrive at the Milk Bar because of the decor and atmosphere as it is very quirky and artsy!! My favourite shop is situated at the same venue and therefore makes for an exciting visit.
It was my first time visiting this cafe and I must say the fact that it is outside makes for a better experience as it is breezy to the point of comfort and not too cold. My friend and I both had sandwiches, they were delightful and delicious, packed full of flavour! The drinks were good as well, the wine and coffee was just what I needed.
The only downside, which for me is often the most important part, was the service; we were often forgotten about in the corner and our waiter forgot our final drinks order.
Other than that hiccup we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back soon!!

I don't want to give a rating but I do want to give a review. I've been to this place 2 times but nobody acknowledges you when we walk in. Nobody to show you to a table. I don't really care how fancy you think you are but that should be the basics. The first time I went the place looked dirty with flies buzzing around. Never had a opportunity to taste the food. Can't even get to that point. The second time me and my two sons stood around for few min hopefully that someone will attend to us , so we just left again.

Fabulous, affordable and creative food, great staff and super chilled atmosphere. I had achicken pie of note next to the fireplace! A new favorite and highly recommended.

What a find. My wife has know the Valentine's for many years but this was our first visit to Amatuli and the Milk Bar. Great flat bread with sliced steak covered with caramelised onion, mozzarella rocket and peri peri sauce. Breakfast croissant was also a hit. All washed down with a pint of M2 Mozambican beer.
TwoTastyTummies
What a great foodie find

The food is super yummy. We were there for brunch so we decided to get a croissant, which could be breakfast, and we got a flatbread. Both were great for sharing and a good portion size in our opinion, and they are really good value for money.

The atmosphere is absolutely redonk. Milk Bar is basically the entrance to an African art store. It is inside and outside at the same time with nature and urban elements all around you. They played music by West Nkosi, if you don't know who he is just Google 'West Nkosi Dubaduba'. Look at the photos and listen to the song and you will be transported there. Add food, drinks and good company to this atmosphere and you have a fantastic place.

The service wasn't the best but it wasn't a place where you would expect grand service from professional waiters. It felt more like a help yourself kind of place anyway.

The only issue we had was that the whole place is open for smoking so everyone around us were smoking while we ate and that is something we don't like.

Milk Bar gets Two Tasty Tummies' stamp of approval
Laura
Really good for a quick bite. Coffee is amazing and service attentive. Pastries are amazing. The mint lemonade thing is worth a try too. Decor is dope.

Great stop for a quick midday lunch.
Great reminder that one of the first stores of the chain is often the best. When one is stressing about buying home decor . This is a great stop to relax

A true hidden gem next to Katy's Bar - restaurant is small but very tropical and makes you feel you could be in the East...food is fresh and delicious and coffee is strong but flavorsome. #KevFabFood had the breakfast platter (sharing for 2) - it was very good...but order one for yourself as for 2 it's more of a snack portion. The carrot cake and lemon meringue are also a must try! Fab and unique gem for sure!
O-Mizu Satori
This place has a really funky vibe and they play cool music. Usually a nice spot to go to before work.
Only problem is the coffee. It's not very nice at all! There is a slight burnt taste to it which would be indicative of a bad blend, bad roasting or bad machine settings.
Jill Nudelman
You park on the awkwardly angled pavement in the heart of the Kramerville decor zone. It's treeless and dry. You walk into this shed-like space. It feels like you've landed in Marrakesh (which I've never visited) or somewhere equally exotic. Went for breakfast after a Sunday morning run. Had the flat bread with hummus, peppers and mushrooms. Was absolutely delicious! The cappuccino was good too.
Samantha Tame Whittaker
A beautiful little tucked away restaurant that instantly transports you out of the city and makes you feel like you've landed up in a little beach bar in Mozambique somewhere. It even comes with the traditional Mozambican beer, 2M.
The decor and style is unique and African without being inauthentic or "touristy" and the menu allows just enough variety that I'm sure anyone will find something here.
The flatbreads looked very tempting but we opted for the chicken prego. One with salad and one with wedges.
The prego was unique in its style and preparation but I couldn't fault a thing.
Great flavor and the bread bun was spectacular.
Will definitely be back 👍🏻

Oh 😊 wow !!! What a fabulous outing to go to this odd little place. The food is delicious 😋, I had the breakfast bunny so scrumptious, my one daughter had the breakfast plated this is good tasting but there are more exciting things to have. The other daughter had the lamb curry on flat bread 🍞 it was delectable. Have to have this next time. The service is great the setting is so cosy and comfortable. You feel relaxed 😎. You must have the chai ☕️ tea latte it is the best in town. Even the ice coffee is just so good. This place is toothsome. After sitting and chilling, take a walk into the art shop in the backyard the goods are different. It a admirable, charming secret in Sandton.

Great decor in a setting near the office away from the office. Underwhelming food, decent drinks. If you like a bit grease more likely to please you than me. Still a great vibe.

I finally made it to the milk bar, and would highly recommend it to anyone. I opted for the tuna salad, which as delicious with the freshest ingredients! The salad dressing had a bit too much vinegar in it for my tasting, however was still quite addictive (in small amounts). I also ordered the iced coffee- a bit too icy and not enough coffee. For the hour or so that I spent here, I felt like I was in another city, away from Joburg's hustle and bustle. I'll definitely be back!
Nozishada
Nice and quaint little place. The grapefruit juice is fantastic. I can't rate my meal as it was quite average. Service not so fantastic. Yay, they have SnapScan.

Such a warm cosy inviting place loved it..went to have a light snack and drinks with a soon to be bride this evening..I live the decor and setup it's just so inspiring..I had the caramelised onion, tomatoes and basil flatbread, it was a very generous portion and looked amazing (so much so that the people at the table next door actually came to ask me what I was having as it looked so good)..I will definitely be back to try more..

After voting on Wednesday we decided to go to Milk Bar for drinks. The first time we went to Milk Bar I wasn't able to eat there as I had food poisoning from the night before. Being a chilly day I decided to have a cuppachino first with a chocolate brownie shortbread. The coffee and brownie were good. We then shared a chicken curry flat bread which was amazing, crusty thin based flat bread with really tasty chicken curry. The little spot is rustic and cosy and lovely for afternoon drinks and snacks.

The traveller in me loves this cosy Afro-chic-inspired oasis with incredible decor underneath Katy's Palace Bar in Kramerville.

It serves great coffee all day, but it becomes an atmospheric bar come sunset. They brought a bowl of popcorn to our table along with the drinks which was a great touch. It's cosy and get's busy on a Wednesday.

Definitely going to go back and try something to eat.
Sabrina Kennedy
Cute little place hidden next to Katy's palace. I had never seen it before but it was nice and unique. The decor is funky African retro style and the atmosphere is chilled. It's quite small so don't go with a huge bunch of people without pre booking, but all and all a nice place to have a drink after work
Kurt Baden Cairns
Trying to be different by complicating the setup of the restaurant only makes sense if it has a stable operating framework. For me, this is working 70% of how it could actually run, and by improving staff service, cleanliness and just have 2 waitrons running around, would add another 10% immediately. Prices should be inflated based on service, not only because you based in up and coming Kramerville and seems like a hipster thing to do.
Madherbz
Sort of hidden off the main road in Kramerville. Once you are inside though it is cosy and nicely curated. I had to figure out how it all works, basically take away style ordering Etc. Staff are fine but not welcoming. Food is great, mostly bread based meals - bunny chow, sandwiches and so on. Over all a Lekker experience.
Sasha Fullerton
Was in the area and decided to pop in for a coffee. Had such a nice vibe that we decided to stay for lunch. The flatbread was small but tasty and had some lovely homemade pound cakes. Will definitely be back. Only potential issue: many tables are in an open air area. Watch out for rain
Jozi Poppy
It's hard for us to find Milk Bar open but today we made it just in time for a light lunch. We had the flat bread. It was tasty. Staff aren't the friendliest. Very pretty restaurant though. Surprised that they don't have milkshake on the menu 😊

Abolish truly loved the vibe! Friendly staff, great music on a Thursday evening and just a chilled evening! Highly recommend! The food is excellent!

Met up with some friends on Saturday afternoon for some drinks. I personally didn't end up eating anything, so I will have to be back to sample the food. However my friends did order a few things to eat, and if I go on the aromas, I'm sure the food is very tasty. Milk Bar (they don't only sell coffee) is a nice little place just below where Katy's Palace is. Its fantastic place to go to just chill with friends, have a few bites to eat, and enjoy a few drinks.

Awesome chilled African vibes. I loved the music, the atmosphere, the beers and the food. I had the hotdog which was nice and spicy and extremely tasty. Yes. I like.
Kaboomo Mgibi
Beautiful place if you are relaxed, very African! Great music. The art and ambience is amazing. I had a great time. It's a fuss free spot. Great reflection of what Joburg is. The staff is super friendly. Definitely going back again

This small lively Afrocentric eatery and cafe oozes originality in terms of atmosphere - located at the entrance of the well known Amatuli furniture showroom, it's an extension of their colorful and rustic African heritage.

The menu offers some local favorites like bunnychow as well as other regulars - muffins, pies, pregos, salads etc.

Their coffee is excellent - try the mahkulu cort (double shot cortado) or picinini cappuccino.
There is a good selection of cakes and pastries to enjoy whilst you soak up the ambience.

A hidden gem in JHB, relaxed and quirky! great for a light snack or afterwork drink... Food is yummy, variety of drinks served, atmosphere is super relaxed... A bar you would find and do well in CPT!

Milk Bar has been on my list for ages - so glad I've finally been - and twice in one week.
A real hidden gem with a great atmosphere any time of the day.

Expect delays if you go at peak times - I went for a quick toasted sandwich lunch and ended up waiting more than half an hour for it. They could use a few more cookers in the kitchen. That said the food is delicious and worth going back for when not in a rush.
Candistripe
A hidden little spot for a quick bite, once you step in you feel like you have been transported into another world. Quirky and chilled. No milk served:). Simple salads and lovely thirst quenchers. If you are on the go, this is a spot perfect for a pause. I felt like was in some island shindig.

After going to Katy’s Palace Bar on numerous occasions for functions, I was thrilled to try Milk Bar for the first time. Such a cool, relaxed, vibey spot for brunch. And with the gloriously hot days we have been having, the shaded seating came as welcome relief. Being able to enjoy the fresh air of the outside spot without being beaten by the sun.

Everything is ordered over the counter. With a large food and drinks menu hanging behind the bar, with some snacks and ready made treats on the counter as you order and pay. Ordering to the right, pick up to the left. We went when it was still quite quiet so it wasn’t too bad standing around waiting for the order, but I wouldn’t like to see it when it’s a bit busier as there isn’t much space to maneuver around between ordering and pick up when there are loads of people also wanting to do the same thing.

In the way of food and drinks, decent. It’s a coffee shop style menu, but with more emphasis on the quicker style meals: Sandwiches, croissants, flat breads, muffins, and so on. With cakes on offer too. The sandwich I tried, the tomato and fresh mozzarella, R32, was great. I really enjoyed it, and as the way of light meals go, filled the food gap completely. The iced chai, R29, was really watery and not much chai in it, so that was a bit disappointing. They do have a decent selection of different beers to choose from, so after switching to those, I was a lot happier.

As mentioned, the setting is quirky, and a mix match of furniture and décor. Really fun! I'll be back soon :)

found the place by chance , interesting shop décor , was a little confused about how the service works until my wife pointed out the sign "place orders at counter" , placed the order for coffee and toasted sandwiches , was I pleasantly surprised , sitting on a rainy day opposite a burning fire with a super meal , I would list the meal as being a typical fast food meal but with a way better atmosphere , well worth a visit for someone wanting a nice relaxed meal

Milk bar is a hidden jewel if you are looking for something unique.
Yes - the food is good (lunch).
Yes - the coffee is good.
But it is the atmosphere that lures you to return...
It is like going away on a short holiday somewhere in Mozambique. You are away from the city for a while... thats the charm.
Cath Tatham
With one of the most unique atmospheres I've encountered, the Milk Bar certainly is a treat. We met here for the Fujifilm Instawalk over the weekend, I was definitely pleasantly surprised. We treated ourselves to delicious parma ham sandwiches and ice cold beers for a fairly reasonable price (R110 for two sandwiches and two drinks). I would definitely recommend giving this spot a try!

The cutest little place. A friend recommended it for after work drinks, and I had such a lovely time. The setting and decor is soooooo quaint and charming. I will definitely be back for more than just a drink!

Stopped by for what was supposed to be a quick lunch before a meeting.
Ordered the roasted aubergine, fresh mozzarella and pomegranate molasses flat bread.
It took about 45 minutes to come which ended up being 5 minutes before I needed to leave and the waiter/manager apologized and offered complimentary freely squeezed orange juice. I shoveled it all down and it wasn't bad, just very bland. Also, what was supposed to be roasted aubergine didn't look like or taste like it.
Won't go out of my way to go back but will pop in and give it another try if I'm in the area and don't have a time constraint.
Amy Rusike
Was so excited to visit this spot as it's just around the corner from where I live. What a charming ambiance!! Definitely something different with a laid back, yet chic African vibe. It's a perfect brunch spot especially if you want to have a glass of wine with your meal. Wish it was open later on a Saturday as it would be the perfect spot for an afternoon session. Looking forward to going there on a Friday for some after work drinks. Def somewhere I could become a local 😜

Amatuli in Kramerville, a treasure trove of artefacts sourced from across the globe, has expanded to open up its newest foodie outlet, Milk Bar. A relaxed, vibey eatery that serves amazing coffee and simple-but-delicious food. This is perhaps Johannesburg’s most magical coffee shop yet. It’s 8.30am on a public holiday and we arrive at a very quiet Desmond Street in Kramerville, Johannesburg. None of the fabric and design shops in the area have opened their doors yet, but you can see cars parked around the classic Katy’s Palace blue Cadillac outside the doors to Amatuli, and a few tables are already filled with people enjoying their morning coffee.

Went to Katy’s Palace last week and was quite starved and went to Milk Bar for a quick foodie fix, to my disappointment there was nothing great as the options cater for more brekkie and brunch options. However I did indulge in the delicious pregos that are served outside the venue

Milk Bar has a stunning African beach bar vibe, and is awesome for a day visit. I will definitely come through again to try out the menu when it is befitting.

A quick suggestion to the restaurant – You have patrons coming through here to party at Katy’s maybe add a few other options to the menu that will fill you up for dins.
Claire Wiggill
What a fun and different spot on the edge of Katy's palace bar! Really like the laid back Atmosphere and the African decor! The sandwiches are great and good value for money! I ordered at halloumi, tomatoes and cucumber salad - wasn't sure what to expect but it was rather disappointing! Would be an okay side dish but it had hardly any halloumi in it, was really some chopped up cucumber in a small glass container! Other than that it's a great place for a quick bite to eat and a coffee.

Milk Bar in Kramerville has a very East African feel to it and this little coffee shop does not disappoint in terms of providing something different and fresh to the coffee scene! Oh, and I am told that in the evenings it transforms into a quirky bar for after-work drinks..

It is just outstanding and a new favourite local of mine! More experiences here to follow..
Cari
So unexpected. Went to Milk Bar for lunch today...a quaint place with a great atmosphere. There isn't a lot on the menu but the service was quick and the chicken pot pie I ordered was delicious...finally a pie packed with chicken!

Quaint spot for mid week coffee or even Saturday breakfast. Setting is wonderful- greenery, old furniture and African themed accessories. It feels like your in a hidden johannesburg nook. Food was basic and the coffee was okay- more about charm than anything else.

We are HUGE fans of Milk Bar. My fiancé had his 40th birthday here on 1 August. It was wonderful. The food, the service and the music. Thank u!

The decor is awesome! Loved the old-school mismatched chairs and the thousands of pot plants in amongst the decor.
It’s not a very big place, and it was pretty full this afternoon, which is great to see. A lot of people seemed to come in for a takeaway sandwich and coffee too… this place is ideal for the area which is sorely lacking in good coffee spots!
The menu is simple, yet absolutely perfect for lunch or a snack. I really didn’t feel like a sarmie and it was too cold for a salad. So I ordered a flat bread with aubergine, buffalo mozzarella and pomegranate… I LOVED it! The pomegranate was perfect, although I thought it may be odd… it needed that pop of freshness to lift the taste of the dish. I also liked how the flat bread was cut into pieces to make it easy to eat and share.

If you’re wondering about the drink in the image… I ordered a Doubleshot craft iced tea. If I find it on a menu again, I’m definitely getting it! Loved the subtle lemony flavour

On that note, the coffee was great too!

My colleague ordered their hotdog… which he enjoyed… that was interesting actually, I wish I’d take a photo of it. It was a bockwurst in a pretzel roll! Another colleague wasn’t too enamoured by her sandwich, although we did tell her that there’s only so much you can do to make a cheese and tomato sandwich amazing..

I'll definitely be going back again.
Jo
I walked into Milk Bar one afternoon and fell in love. Absolutely love the eclectic decor! Such a nice spot to have a but if lunch. Menu isn't wow but everything else makes up for it... The food was tasty but nothing out of the ordinary.
Carina Van Zyl
Milk Bar fills a big gap in Kramerville as shopping for home decor makes you hungy! On top of that has a very cool vibe.

They have a nice selection of pastries, and even though I didn't try anything on the menu, the options do look delicious.

Good for: a much needed break between home shopping, quick lunch
Amy Lara Baxter
Wow what a beautiful place! A must visit!

It is such a wonderful and unexpected spot, sit there for an hour and you feel like you are on holiday. They have such stunning small touches all around which make the place very unique. A very rustic, chilled vibe which caters for all people.

It is open, but they have a warm cosy fireplace.

It is self service when ordering and then they bring you your food. The staff are very friendly and know the food very well which is extremely helpful.

The food is simple, tasty and certain items very unique. I think it could cater to anyone's wants. It was delicious food! We ordered a salami and cheese croissant, parma ham and mozzarella toasted sandwich and a custard danish, as well as a hot chocolate and Earl Grey tea. The favourites had to be the toasted sandwich, they were generous with the toppings, the Danish was perfect and not too sweet, the tea came in a plunger as it was actual tea leaves which was a great surprise and the hot chocolate is a must try, as it is made with dark chocolate.
The food was divine and the atmosphere even ever. I cannot wait to make this place my "new spot".
Dolly
This quirky little gem is fantastic if you want to grab a quick coffee or chill out with a glass of wine. Go there for after work drinks and take in all the art on display.

This quaint little coffee shop just outside Katy's Palace is a perfect little place to grab a cuppa and a bite to eat to get out of the Jozi hustle and bustle. A must do here is order their carrot cake - probably Jozi's best! They also offer a large variety of alcoholic beverages and snacks. Big up to the friendly gents who run the place - wishing you much success.

I planned to go to the Vinyl Fair yesterday, in Kramerville, and was told to give Milk Bar a visit. So I met up with two friends for breakfast at Mill Bar.

What a joyful morning spot. It almost feel like having breakfast at a BnB in the Karoo. It was cosy and gave you that home feeling, with couches and a fireplace.
You order at the counter, and pay right away, which I think is pretty cool. That way you don't hassle with getting the bill when you done. You can just up and leave.
There's quite a variety of craftbeer (first thing I look for at any new place) as well as different warm drinks, cakes, easy-to-pronounce-and-eat breakfasts, ranging from simples sarmies to croissants and hotdogs.
It's a place for everyone: the hippie grand dads to the young married, even kids seem to enjoy it.

Make your way there any day of the week and you'll experience the same vibe.
