Review Topo Gigio - Johannesburg

This is one of my favourite Italian restaurants. I love the vibe, both upstairs and downstairs. The restaurant has lively decor with lots of colour and friendly staff. A good selection of drinks and cocktails with some interesting daily specials. The “house” sauce on their calamari pizza is the reason I keep going back. It’s absolutely divine. I can’t recommend it enough. I’ll even drive from the East Rand just for take aways.

Highly recommended restaurant to try! The staff are friendly and the menu is overwhelmingly tasty as there are too many options to choose from. Everything we ordered was delicious. The portions were surprisingly sizeable and absolutely tasty. Parking may be an issue on busy evenings so the best is to park at the back. Pre-book your table as this place gets incredibly busy.

Absolutely delicious Italian food!! Definitely would recommend the seafood, and teriyaki pizza! You can't go wrong with majority of the food and there usually a cocktail special from 3-5pm for all Jugs. Salmon foccacia was really light and enjoyable. Loved the pizzas as well. The drinks were okay but good deal on half price jugs. Will definitely visit again

Okay, we didn't know that you had to book in advance because this place is popular but now that we now, we'll do that next time. Anyways, the vibe at this place is out of this world, nothing I've seen anywhere else. The pizza we ordered was very nice, like very very nice, plus the drink were half price which was the cherry on top. The live music. Beautiful live music, soothing songs of love. Definitely going back here again.

Guys the place is beautiful and the vibe is pretty chilled. You can literally come here for drinks and something good to eat after work. The staff is really friendly. I liked that we were given attention the whole time, by different waiters. We didn't wait long for our drinks and food. The food was to die for, wow. I had the chicken stack. The flavour, the tender juicy chicken, my favorites, peppers and avo, everything went so well together. The rocket just balances the meal out and guys, the mushroom was a bonus. I definitely need to know how to make that rice, wow Also loved how the toilets were clean and how the basins seemed like they were outside. I like that outside vibe a lot. And there are so many mirrors, I love that. Guys, next time you in Randburg, go grab a drink or something to eat, you won't regret.

We we're a group of 30 people had the best service from the manager & staff. Pizza's was the best 👌 and so delicious 😋 !!! Jugs mixed to perfection 😊....Thank you Mathew we absolutely had a good time!!!

What a yummy evening! The restaurant had an awesome vibe downstairs so we decided to have dinner & drinks. I opted for a virgin caipirinha & my date enjoyed a cold craft beer. We chose upstairs to enjoy the warm evening. Once our thirst was quenched, we ordered the 250g steak prego with chips & crumbed chicken burger, chips & a side of cheese sauce. The prego was medium rare covered in an amazing prego sauce & the chicken was extremely tender & extra crispy! After the huge portions we decided to share a chocolate brownie with ice-cream YUM🥰 Precious - our waitress, was amazing!!

Sam was a awesome guy and treated us very well i was pleased with his service and personality was warm. Service was lovely I would definitely come back for his A class service and hospitality for recommendations.

The place was amazing. Was surprised the whole top floor was booked (make reservations!). The vibe was amazing, the food was spectacular. Luckily went during the half price jug special as well.

Super friendly waiting staff, fantastic pizza and reasonably priced menu. Atmosphere is good (can be a little rowdy on the balcony, but nothing serious) Try the milkshakes!

Had the half price jug special for sundowners. Friend took me there for the first time - her favorite bar. Enjoyed a beautiful sunset and had so much fun! Wasn't too crowded which made it even better.

The ambience is electric. If you’re into places where the vibe is loud and busy then it’s the place for you. however, it can get too busy and crowded and thus making it hard to get by. The food is alright and the service is extremely patient and friendly.

The most flavourful food, the drinks were amazing. Service could be better however the vibe was unmatched, the 2 man band performance had me screaming Sam Smith lyrics at the top of my lungs, lol that will be a wholesome memory for the week.

From the moment my call was answered till the end of the meal, myself and my wife were treated to the perfect evening for her birthday.<br/>It’s tough to find a good restaurant open on a Monday night in Jozi.<br/>Even harder still is finding one that can cater to special dietary requirements.<br/>And almost impossible to find a spot that would put up with requests that stretch outside of the norm.<br/>I booked a table for 18h30, and mentioned that it was for a special occasion.<br/>Immediately it was suggested that we would be put close to the fireplace as the temps have certainly dropped in a usually warm Jozi.<br/>The place wasn’t too full (I think folk are a bit too cold to venture out unless for s special occasion at the moment)<br/>When we arrived we were welcomed by friendly staff and seated immediately, we soon worked out that it would be way to warm, so Ryan our very attentive and friendly waiter, suggested an alternative spot.<br/>It was clear that all of the information from the booking had been communicated to the staff on duty and Mathew the manager knew we were coming.<br/>The ambiance is interesting, friendly family restaurant meets gastro pub (albeit with much more comfortable seating).<br/>The tables are generous in size and even though there was only two of us they could comfortably seat four people with drinks sauces and glassware on the table.<br/>Nothing was too much in terms of the requests that we had.<br/>Usually gluten free focaccias’ are either dry and overcooked or fluffy and soggy.<br/>Somehow Ray, the chef who happens to by Ryan the waiters brother, was able to get it right....<br/>Even when a bottle of still water was brought to the table instead of the sparkling it was quickly rectified with a smile and with haste.<br/>When I explained my food allergies, Ryan listened attentively and made sure that any suggestions precluded what I couldn't eat.<br/>He even went to the trouble of asking if he should still bring the parmesan to the table (he did cause my wife can have dairy 😊)<br/>I opted for something "off the menu", where by the chef would need to make some changes to regular dishes.<br/>This is always a difficult situation for restaurants and it was handled so well by the kitchen.<br/>Ryan checked with the chef and the manager what could be done and returned with an incredible suggestion (I reckon could be added to the menu lol)<br/>An Aglio e Olio gluten free tagliatelle with mixed veg and basil....<br/>( all that was missing was a touch more garlic and chilli and slightly bigger veg).<br/><br/>My wife had the pumpkin panzerotti, oven baked.<br/>It was perfectly balanced, creamy and still with an ample amount of napolitana tomato flavour punch.<br/>Just a note if you opt for the oven baked expect some extra cheese on top 😊<br/><br/>Portion sizes are more than ample, Terri didn’t even manage to finish half of her meal…(they even offer “small options” for those with a smaller apatite or watching the waistline)<br/><br/>Ryan gave just the right amount of attention to us, not overbearing or hovering, but there when we needed anything.<br/><br/>We were offered a complimentary dessert of our choice for Terri’s birthday which I tough was a great touch being able to have the choice.<br/>Ryan managed to bring our coffee and hot drink at the same time as the dessert which shows a real understanding if timing and attention to detail.<br/>Prices are reasonable and the value for money is better than a lot of establishments.<br/><br/>With half price, and discount specials on certain nights and days, I think mark and his team understand more about the consumers then most do.<br/>What impressed me more than anything on the night is that even though the owner of the establishment was not present, it appeared to run as if he was.<br/>I think that this is an establishment that is not spoken about enough and one that we will add to our list of preferred spots.<br/>We will definitely be back to sample all that Topo Gigio has to offer and explore more of the menu.

Hubbie and I had a pleasant date night at Topo Gigio last night. On a recommendation from family I had a calamari pizza. Hubbie had the teriyaki pizza. My pizza was full of flavour and very filling. The service was friendly and Topo Gigio has the perfect ambience for a chilled evening out.

The food did not live up to expectations and the waitress was not that bad. Overall could have been better. The taco portions were so small I wanted to cry. Perhaps it is best to just have drinks here as they are quite nice<br/>

I love Greenside and Topo Gigio was next on my list of places to try. My baked ravioli was amazing- the portion size was large and the ravioli was soft. My boyfriend ordered the Alfredo with gnocchi which was also really good. Only comment was that the tables and menus etc were not the cleanest.

everytime I come to this place i always leave a happy customer...their pizzas are very generous with their toppings, big variety of pizzas. the pesto pasta was amazing, the portion size is every good. staff always friendly, and the alcohol is well priced

Best service, the pizza is exceptional (banting base rocks) and huge portions! I would recommend this to anyone who feels like a chilled dining experience.

They have these amazing jug specials during the week and on weekends but I usually come here with friends for after work drinks. On my recent visit however, I went there on a date night. <br/><br/>Their staff is nice and friendly but they could work on their communication to each other about which tables are booked and which aren't. <br/><br/>I decided to try some of their cocktails, I had a pineapple margarita which was a okay but lacked that kick, my partner tried their long island and wasn't too happy about that either. I then tried their Ol' Fashion (which i'm a big fan of) and I give it a 3/5. <br/><br/>The food however is really good and appetizing, we had a half/half pizza, the one half was a Feta, Avo and bacon mix and the other half was beef strips, pepperdews, green pepper, onion and sweet chilli sauce (it was as much as a mouth full as that description :)).<br/><br/>All in all I'd recommend the place for it's vibe, specials and yummy food.

Went here for a quick bite and a few drinks. We ordered a regular pizza to share and their famous jugs to share too. Sam was our waiter and he was amazing and so accommodating! Thank you Sam, five star service and incredible food too.

I love love this place. <br/><br/>So throughout varsity I’ve been hearing about this place and how they have the yummiest jugs so this year I decided to try it. And I just cannot stop going back, not just for the jugs 🤞🏾<br/>Okay, firstly make sure you make a reservation to sit upstairs (smokers area) which has a really nice chilled vibe. I’ve always experienced the service there to be really good, attentive and friendly! I like that the waiters make an effort to try and remember you from the previous time which honestly makes you feel welcomed. <br/><br/>They have half priced jugs at certain times everyday which is really cool so you kinda save a lot of money. My personal fave is the sangria as the others have proved to be too sweet for me. <br/>I’ve tried a couple of different flavored pizzas there and my absolute favorite is their calamari and avo pizza which goes all the way up!!! Been here a couple of times and the food never disappoints. It’s a great place for good food and drinks however, last night was a real shock. Upon requesting our bill and having tipped the waiter, he told us that he expected at least 10% of the bill as a tip and told us how they only got paid on tips, I asked him if he thought he deserved the 10% based on the service he gave us and he lost it. Became visibly upset and even started arguing with one of the other waiters telling him that he hasn’t been paid. He then told us we can keep our tip and he’ll get it from other patrons.<br/><br/>The service was appalling to say the least, yet we still tipped him because not giving a tip really feels wrong. I don’t know at what point he felt a sense of entitlement but next time I go and he’s our waiter, I’ll definitely ask for someone else to help us.

This restaurant is just amazing. If you are a prego lover then getting the chicken prego is a must! It is heavenly. I’ve done many many birthdays of mine and friends here over the years and we’ve never been disappointed. All the food is impeccable and the jugs are great! One of my favorite places.

One of the main reasons I keep coming back here is because of the excellent service and the half price jug specials. A great place to eat good pizza and get buzzed. The atmosphere is fantastic so you are guaranteed to have a great time.<br/>I would recommend that you book a table as it gets crowded during the time the specials are on.

Lovely place for relaxing during the week. We ordered pizzas. We loved their generous portions and the way the pizza tasted. Their half priced cocktails before 5pm are a bonus. Definitely going back on their not so busy days.

Didn't know anything about this place when going there with a group and was delighted to discover that they cater to the low carb lifestyle. My banting pizza was delicious. Nice casual, cozy vibe as well.

I’ve been going to Topi Gigio for years and love it. The service is great and The atmosphere is best on Sunday’s when they have a live band. Friday’s are mainly for a party vibe with lots of young people (i’m 32). <br/><br/>On all the other days, the environment is chilled and relaxed. The food - they have THE BEST PIZZAS ever! The Messi (with extra avo) and the Seafood pizza are my stable go-to’s. They also make great cocktail jugs -love ‘em. <br/><br/>The rest of their menu is OK. The pasta is ok, but the seafood and salmon ones are great. I’ve tried most menu items, and apart from the pasta, pizza and beef carpaccio, there’s really nothing to write home about. All in all, I’ll never stop going there. That’s my home 😊

Not a restaurant you’ll immediately notice... but it is definitely a hidden Greenside gem.<br/><br/>Me and my friend wanted to have some drinks, and this was the only restaurant that still had a nice vibe on a late Sunday afternoon.<br/><br/>They have drink specials that you cannot miss. A single jug goes for half the price certain times on certain days.<br/><br/>The food is absolutely amazing. The prawns and veggies was absolutely amazing and delicious.<br/><br/>Friendliest waiters and they constantly check up on you! <br/><br/>Definitely my favorite spot in JHB!!!

Visited the restaurant on a Thursday weekend right before a long weekend. The place is buzzing with activity and is a popular social spot in Greenside. We went for a birthday party and our group were seated outside - which would have been fine were it not for the chilly weather. Didn't help that the waiters told us that the heaters weren't functioning.<br/><br/>Food wise - we ordered a range of pizzas. I would definitely recommend them. All very good with different and unique flavourful combinations. My surprise was the calamari & avo topped with white sauce pizza. It was really good. All the other pizzas didn't disappoint.<br/><br/>Unfortunately I have to mark the place down for the service. Our waiters were very slow, they forgot orders and generally didn't pay attention to us. I twice had to hunt them down to take more drinks orders.

Great food with a lovely view of Johannesburg. I enjoy it more during lunch than dinner. The crowd is more relaxed during the day. Greenside is an area where time moves slower.

Topo Gigio is a vibey place in the heart of Greenside. Really well made cocktails and great service from the waiter. I had the Mac n cheese which was a good take on the traditional Mac n cheese in a white sauce base. A pretty much average score dude to the sauce being abit runny and the pasta abit too bland. However, will defiantly be back for the other stuff that seemed great on the menu.

I've been to Topo twice now, and both times were for celebrations with work friends. The restaurant gets quite noisy so I would not recommend visiting Topo for a quiet lunch or dinner.<br/><br/>We love their Buy 1 Get 1 Free cocktail jugs special and many of their customers can be seen enjoying their special.<br/><br/>Service isn't the best. It can take quite a while to order your food and drinks from your waiter.<br/>

This place will never disappoint. I am a sucker for rich, saucy, wholesome pasta and Topo always satisfies my craving. Had the Alfredo and added chorizo to the meal and I do not regret my decision. Thank you again for a great cheat dinner with amazing cocktails.

Had dinner here with a friend last night, and I was a little disappointed after having read some pretty great reviews. I had the seafood pasta which I really didn't enjoy because the seafood wasn't fresh, it was very obviously those frozen seafood mixes. My friend had the crumbed chicken pasta, which although I enjoyed it more than my food, it still left much to be desired. The sauce was far too sweet, and had an almost artificial, straight out of the can kind of taste.<br/><br/>We also ordered a mojito jug, which was all syrup and no rum. So that was also disappointing.<br/><br/>Overall it wasn't a train smash, the waiter was quite attentive and our orders arrived quickly. However I won't be rushing back.

Great vibey place on the greenside strip . Their half price jugs specials is soooooo popular and a great bargain . The food is good , pizza is tasty . Decent amount of toppings . The chilli poppers had gud amount of filling . Definitely a cool place to chill and ppl watch .

Situated in the bustling suburb of greenside Topo Gigio is a great vibey restaurant, with a menu that caters for every taste. Thanks to the entertainer app I decided to give the restaurant a shot on a hot Saturday afternoon. <br/><br/>We decided and opted for the tikka & Mozambican pizzas which were wood fire oven baked. Whilst the pizzas were nice, light & crisp as you would expect from a wood fire oven, the fact that you mention “Tikka” I expected an authentic indian chicken spiced pizza with lovely flavours coming through. Sadly this was not the case. The chicken was extremely blend and could have easily passed off as a normal chicken pizza. Similarly with the Mozambican, which is had a slightly different taste it didn’t blow me away. This for me , was a huge disappointment. Further to that I found that the tomato base of the pizza was too sweet for my liking, which gives that cheap “AllGold tomato sauce” flavour. The pizza on the whole was average and failed to wow me. On the positive side, the service and atmosphere was great. The have numerous TV screens in the restaurant so sports fans will definitely be pleased with that. On the whole it was a pleasant experience and I look forward to hopefully trying out their other menu items like the pasta, nachos or even their prego rolls. Look out for their in house specials on food and cocktails for some good deals.<br/>If you in the area and looking for something vibey with an Italian twist , then it’s worth a visit !

As a huge fan of the Topo Gigio, I had no idea that one could order dual pizzas. The pizzas were extremely tasty and filling. The jug special has gotten better, they are not as ice diluted as I had known them to be.

I really enjoy this place be it in the week or on a Sunday to chill. It fits perfectly in with the Greenside vibe.<br/><br/>Their food is really good and we always always go here when in the mood for cannelloni - love the veg option! <br/><br/>The vibe is nice on a Sunday and they have an awesome cocktail jug special on weekends.

It's an affordable place for students especially. The service was great(the waiters were so attentive and kind) and the overall vibe was just chilled.

4 people seated at a table upstairs enjoying young drinks. A drunk guy from the table next to us randomly decides to sit at our table and puts his arm around my wife and passes a silly comment. We let it slide and tell him and his friends with a smile that we don't do such things over here. Drunk guy disregards what we are saying and puts his arm around her again and asks us what we going to do about it. Now naturally that's my cue to put a gun in his face and blow the back of his head out or slit his throat with the steak knife that's on my table (As seen on TV)... but because we were genuinely out for a young drink with some friends and not looking for any trouble, we ask to speak to the manager of this fine establishment and have him sort out our issues. My friend calmly explains to him what just happened and the managers reaction to all of this is what is NEVER going to bring me back to this place. THE MANAGER APOLOGIZES TO US AND ASKES TO MOVE US TO ANOTHER TABLE??! Now I'm about to blow the lid right off😡. Anyways, so we chose to completely remove ourselves from this messed up situation and left the joint so that the other table could sit in peace and carry on having a good time and have good laughs over how the manager decided to move the black table and let them sit comfortably without dealing with their drunk friend. The best part of all this, as we were walking out, the manager again comes to me and apologizes and says to me "I'm really sorry I did not deal with the situation as I should've" and this is all happening in real-time, so he's aware that he hasn't dealt with it correctly but still chooses to tell me this and not turn around to deal with it as he should be. 🤡! 🤣😂

Been here twice and the service was a nipple grind. I go there for their live bands because the ambience is THAT amazing. Pick to sit upstairs, I wouldn't advise this if you have a small bladder though.. those stairs WILL trip you, especially if you're having their AMAZING R&R jug - the first one will knock you out by the way so don't get carried away. I booked a table a week in advance for 15 people upstairs on a Friday evening. The service is a bit slow as it gets a bit packed upstairs. We requested to have separate bills for our table to make payment easier for everyone but the waiter insisted that we can only have one. His reason was that customers usually leave without settling the bill. I guaranteed that I would settle anything that was outstanding but he refused. The restaurant had all my contact details as I booked a table in advance if anything went wrong. This was rather difficult for everyone to work out their part towards the end. Each and every person settled before they left hence why I was rather frustrated that the waiter didn't allow separate bills! Other than that. The food was very good! I ordered a Frutti Di M pasta and the seafood pizza to share with someone. Hands down, those are he best dishes in my opinion from Topo Gigio. <br/>Overall it was a lovely experience.

Nice vegetable options. Garlic foccacia was quite good with the chilli and other accompaniments. The Spinach and Ricotta Canelloni was amazing and the Arrabiata was good but not great (slightly sweet - urgh). Service from our waiter Frank was very good. Lovely Sangria with the Saturday lunchtime special. Atmosphere was lively. Will definitely be back to try other veg options including the pizza.

I've been here a thousand times because of the Half price jug special of course . The pizza is not the greatest pizza there is out there avoid it by all means . The vibe is great ,especially upstairs overlooking the road . The service is great ,my personal favorite waiter is Sam his always smiling . The jugs taste super yummy ,don't be a hero and try to get as many jugs in as possible before the special ends tons of people have thrown up at this place . <br/><br/>It's not too expensive for approximately R200 you can walk away with a drink and a meal .<br/><br/>Don't go there all the time especially students it'll become boring and no longer fascinating but good place overall .

Topo Gigio came highly recommended to us, however the person who suggested it to my boyfriend and I, had recommended other places that turned out to be quite poor. Anyway we ended up at Topo Gigio tonight and I am so glad we did. <br/><br/>Vibe is great, met with even better food. I had the crumbed mushroom starter, which was perfectly crisp on the outside and succulent on the inside. My boyfriend had the calamari Cajun style which was tasty and tender. <br/><br/>I had the Frutti de Mare pasta, wow just wow a very substantial portion (I had the full portion), I was pleasantly surprised to see 4 large queen prawns on top of what was an already very generous portion of pasta, calamari, mussels and shrimp. One of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. My boyfriend has a Hawaiian pizza with extra pepperdews, which really look good and he also enjoyed thoroughly. <br/><br/>The only slight down side was the service was a tad slow, having said that it didn't really bother us too much as it really is a place to enjoy, chill have a drink or two and enjoy the food and the company you are with.<br/><br/>You'll definitely see us soon and is now one of my fave spots in Jhb!!

I've been coming to this place for years & don't see myself stopping anytime soon! It is perfect for sundowners with a group of friends & the half price jug special makes it even better. I had the squid heads starter as i wasn't very hungry, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My friends had pizza & pasta which they agreed was amazing as always. Really lovely place for big groups. Service is good and so is the food. I ordered a Californian pizza and it was perfect. Couldn't complain. Also had a jug or two. The half price jug special is really student friendly. I see myself coming back here very soon.

Another fabulous Sunday of sundowners at this neighborhood institution. The live music was fantastic, created an awesome vibe, The waiter Mbongiseni was exceptional. Had the tanquerey gin Jug, which was fantastic and the Choricho pizza. This place still brings life to a greenside that isn't really "what it use to be".

Great place to chill with friends and have a drink.. The pasta dishes are the bomb especially the crumbed chicken pasta but the nachos need some improvement. Also the cocktail jugs are made in bulk so even if you don't want a specific ingredient in your cocktail you cannot change it..<br/><br/>But will be coming back for that pasta

I've been a fan of Topo Gigio for years. It's located conveniently on the strip of Gleneagles Rd in Greenside. It always has a great vibe and I highly recommend them.<br/><br/>So the service is extremely friendly. The waiters are really attentive and helpful. <br/><br/>The food is amazing. This time I had the chicken breast and veggies - which was really tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. My one friend had a pizza with mushrooms which she said was really good. It looked crispy - a big ups from me. My other friend had a salad and said it was delicious. My other two friends had the ravioli and both commented on how flavorsome it was. <br/><br/>A recommendation from me personally- if you are not driving, definitely have a drink! The cocktails are fab. I really love their mojitos.🍹 <br/><br/>On a closing note- I think Topo is very affordable and you definitely experience great value for money. So go and try them out. Definitely won't regret it! 🍕 🥗

Everything was amazing. I honestly can say it was the best pizza I have had in my life that is gluten free and low carb with my banting base! I had the best service and Monica is the best I have had in years! Thank you and well done I will tell Everyone how incredible you guys are.

Friendly familiar waiters, the best chicken or steak prego in Johannesburg, comes with a magic sauce. Carne is a great pizza too. Chips and sauce are amazing

Sadly I won't be returning here. The service started on a good note, but from mid way onwards was rather terrible. While ordering I remember thinking he was going to get something wrong because he wasn't writing things down. There was only two of us but I had a half half pizza and my friend had extras and we both had special requests. The pizzas came and one of my halves was a completely different pizza from what I ordered. It had ham on it and I don't eat ham. So he had to take it back. He tried to guilt trip me (which worked) by saying he'll pay for it. I told him I didn't want him to pay for it and he said he'll speak to the manager. I ended up just having some of my friends pizza and ordering something else totally different to take away for lunch the next day. My friend's pizza (the mushroom one) was sloppy and the whole base had gone mushy. I didn't enjoy it at all and wasn't sad that I didn't have my own to be honest. From that moment on the service was barely non existent and we ended up leaving and going for a drink next door. Not impressed, especially after seeing the other reviews.

They have some solid pizza here but to be honest we mostly go here for the half price jugs which is great value for money. The half price special is kinda at awkward times to be honest, so you just need to have carefully planned business meetings. One of the few places in greenside I still consitently go to.

Tasty food and the best service on the Greenside strip. Happy hour on a Sunday at 3 is brilliant. Great vibe with an awesome mix of like minded people. Super chill out spot with friends.

I love topi gigio - the owners are perhaps some of the most involved I've seen in the industry - the fillet pizza is unbelievable possibly the best I've ever had

Pleasant vibe, good food and ambiance. Cool for a drink and meal or to watch a sports match with friends. The pumpkin and spinach were really good.

I really enjoy the pizzas here! It can get quite busy, especially on weekends so I usually avoid it then. The staff are a bit scattered, but the service is decent nonetheless. I don't enjoy coming to Greenside anymore, but this is a spot I'll make an exception for.

Topo used to be our favourite spot to grab a half price jug for some after work drinks. We went back on Friday only to discover the special had ended at 4pm, and even though we were a bit disappointed we decided to just grab a bite to eat.<br/><br/>Luckily we did, because the food here is actually really tasty. I ordered the calamari pizza which was loaded with their mouthwatering prego sauce (seriously just order anything on their menu with this stuff, it's so good), as well as delicious bacon bits and avo. The calamari wasn't bad either, just a little bit chewy. My one friend ordered a prego and it was apparently really good and it's doused in that delicious sauce, and my other friend ordered the Messi pizza (it was good, but mine was better :P).<br/><br/>Overall it's a great spot to meet up with friends for a drink and a bite to eat. The upstairs area is always full but it's worth trying to get a table up there for the atmosphere.

Went for dinner and didn't quite get the experience we were expecting. The service was average and we had to keep finding our waitress. Other than a good melanzane, the pesto pasta actually had little to no pesto and when I ordered the ice cream it was completely melted with a very watered down "bar one" hot chocolate sauce. <br/>Also there was no separation of smoking and non smoking sections which made this unpleasant. Most likely won't be coming back.

My new favourite restaurant for pizza - delicious and they're not stingy with the toppings. My partner had the baked lasagne which was also delicious.

Yummy pasta and amazing cocktail jugs! Love the upstairs section as you get a great view of the 'Burbs! Always good service with smiles and patience especially when there are big groups around. I cannot wait to go there again soon!

I've been here previously many years ago and was delighted that the food was still as good! <br/><br/>Great extensive menu for all Italian food lovers. <br/>Their mac n cheese was brilliant as well as the pizzas.<br/><br/>I went on a Friday night so it was quite packed service was slow but understandably so. <br/> Their beers are good n they have a creative cocktail menu. The jugs are great. <br/>

What a horrible restaurant... we were looking for a nice place to have an early dinner and were met with uninterested waiters that were unwilling to help. We tried to order a virgin cocktail and were told we cant have it as they dont know how to not pour a shot of rum into a drink that usually gets one. We were also told they manager needed to give permission and the lazy oke was just hanging over his bar relaxing which really shows his commitment to his job... So yeah keep up the great work and im sure we will have a new place to put a decent restautant that actually cares about service.

I first discovered Topo Gigio in 2008, when I was a first year student at Wits. We used to call it the watering hole. It became a sanctuary where we could drown our sorrows from the challenges of conquering “the edge’. The restaurant got its popular nickname for its HALF PRICE JUGS special. Everyday for two hours, you can enjoy a jug of your favourite cocktail for half its original price. Give people alcohol and they will be happy. This has certainly helped Topo gain loyal customers. Although do not be fooled, the food is incredibly delicious and reasonably priced.<br/><br/>Most customers seem obsessed with the pizzas on offer at Topo Gigio. The most notable Pizza in my opinion is the halloumi pizza, with avocado, tomato, olives, and cheese. Add extra chicken and you’ve got yourself a scrumptious meal. My prize winning item on the menu is the chicken Prego with a creamy peri peri sauce and chips. I can’t explain how delicious and flavourful this meal is, and for only R60 I can have it whenever I like. <br/><br/>The best part about Topo Gigio are the waiters. I think they are the silent Heroes who keep Topo Gigio alive. Without their friendly, outgoing, and efficient service, I don’t think that the Topo Gigio experience would be the same.<br/><br/>Food: 7/10 The menu could be more daringExperience: 8.5/10 good serviceOverall: 8/10

A nice with bad service... Loads to choose from on the menu, large variety of pizza. Their baked pastas are delicious. I loved the pumpkin panzerotti! Was really good. The restaurant has a nice laid back vibe but can get a bit loud. That could have all been thanks to a table of people who just seemed to shout a lot. Great place for a nice hearty meal.

Nice vibe but the food is quite average. We ordered a pizza and a brownie. The brownie was hard and not very tasty. The pizza had a lovely base but the rest of it was unremarkable. Come for the atmosphere but eat elsewhere.

I actually like the place, the food is decent, well more than decent. The food is not pretentious and the place is always buzzing, sometimes just too much buzz on drinks and turn ups. But it's a go-to when you don't know where to go-to. Except when they steal Casalotti's designs, lmao.

I think Topo Gigo can be best described as a place you go for drinks where food is just an after though. The real reason everyone goes on a weekend is the half price jugs, they might not taste like much but it's probably the cheapest way to get drunk.<br/><br/>The pizza resembled junk pizza, plenty of toppings and very thick gooey cheese. The chips were really good and seasoned well. The calamari was very average, it taste fresh although it was a big portion. <br/><br/>I don't rate the food here highly as I think it's best as a place to visit for drinks.

Despite a slightly slow start to the service, it turned out to be great. I ordered mozarella sticks for starters and the carbonara for rhe mains. The mozarella sticks were well presented and combinations were spot on. The Carbonara was fresh and pasta to sauce quantity was just right. Overall, a great place to be

I've been to Topo Gigio on countless occasions, and it always has a good vibe regardless of what time of the day you are there. It's the ideal place for students <br/><br/>I've only ever had pizzas at Topo Gigio, and recently I don't think they're quite as good as they used to be. There are better pizza places around Joburg within the same price range, however they are a bit generous with the toppings. <br/><br/>The times I have had jugs at Topo Gigio there wasn't nearly enough alcohol in them and they were pretty diluted. <br/><br/>Overall, I think it's best to go with a large group of people and have a good time rather than for the food itself

Got some pizzas from here ,they were floury and burnt on one side ,not much flavour from pizza too so was a let down.do not think i will come here anytime soon

Went there for an 18th party and only had drinks so I'm not sure on how the food is. <br/>The shooters are very nice and there is a large variety. The jugs are also very good, they're very big so the price is worth it. <br/>Sat in the upstairs area which was enclosed because of the rain, and they had heaters on. <br/>The waiters were very helpful.<br/><br/>Very good place if you are having a party and are inviting lots of people.

Pretty decent place to hangout, grab a drink and maybe some food. The Sunday I went, the place was quite full, had acoustic live music and later on, everyone was watching the world cricket finals game.

We go here for drinks quite often. I'm not crazy about the food but those who enjoy seafood usually enjoy eating here. I love sitting upstairs during summer nights or afternoons as you get a bit of a view. The service isn't terrific as we always struggle to get another round or our bill but perhaps that is because we always sit upstairs.

Very nice little spot. Found it for a quick lunch while visiting clients in the area. Service fast and friendly, the sangria crisp and tasty. An excellent peppered rump was produced - medium rare as ordered - the pepper seemed extra tangy, and the bowl of chillies was good. A huge roquefort salad was a perfect counter to the spicy pepper and chili.

I had a very average experience here a few nights ago. They are well known for the pizza which is are good but not excellent. One nice thing about this spot is their happy hour.<br/><br/>I had the Roquefort salad which was a huge disappointment. It was filled with lettuce. The presentation of the salad is pretty sad as well. <br/><br/>Overall, it's a good vibe but doubt I will be going back anytime soon.

The drinking specials are the highlight of this place. The food is really just a bonus. The crowd is young and it is a loud atmosphere so don't go here if you want something quiet! I think coming in groups would be the best option!

First time here ... Had an awesome . One of the best pizzas I've had. Waiter was constantly checking on us(liked that). <br/><br/>Craft beer menu was limited though I enjoyed the red lager.<br/>Will sure visit the place again... Stands a good chance of being one of the regular spots.<br/>

The food was mediocre. Drinks were good. The service is absolutely terrible though. I would recommend that management intervene so as to minimize the wait time that customers have. It just ruins the evening.

I cannot begin to tell you how awesome this restaurant is! I ordered a take-away for delivery on Zomato Order (which is so great and convenient, by the way) for myself and some work colleagues. The manager called me within 5 minutes and said that someone at my office had ordered the same pizza yesterday, and should it be made the same way (without olives and with extra chicken)? Such attention to detail, and brilliantly run.<br/><br/>The order arrived timeously and not one mistake was made. The food was beyond delicious; I highly recommend the halloumi pizza and the tuna mayo salad - WOW!<br/><br/>Thank you for the scrumptious lunch, Topo Gigio :) I'll definitely be ordering from you guys again!

Good atmosphere, but the food was lazy and not at all authentic. The worst basil pesto I have ever had.<br/>Also the service was slow and the chef left even before service ended.

This is a very small and intimate restaurant in Greenside, and you can easily pass this restaurant without knowing that it is a little gem.  Their menu is predominantly Italian, and I will recommend any of their pizzas.  The service was good and the restaurant has a very warm and welcoming ambiance.  Prices are reasonable and it is definitely worth a try.

This is the place where you really want to go with friends. We been there last sunday around 9 pm, yes it open late night. We have basically ordered shooters and all are good. We also have ordered chicken ribs which are crispy. Overall good experience. I really want to go this place again . Must try
