Great traditional Portuguese food!! Not in the best area, and the restaurant could definitely do with a bit of a redo but honestly, the food is phenomenal! Definitely somewhere you go for the food! If you're looking for a fancy lunch/ dinner then this isn't your place!
Bread rolls served with butter to start before our starters arrived. Our Starters were Chicken livers and chicken giblets. The chicken livers were in a sauce and really really yum!!! Giblets also came in a sauce and were also wonderful! Mains we had the 7 prawn meal with chips and the espatada!!! The prawns were cooked really well, the espatada was cooked to absolute perfection and the round chips were really crispy and just what I was craving! The service was great!!! All in all, the food was delicious and I can't wait to go back!!!
When in the South......
This is our local to finish off our business meetings. From the platters, the chicken, the livers, the espetada....I can not fault their food. Beer, tequila and katembas flow like water.
If you looking for the place the locals eat then this is the place. If you want fancy then rather don’t come here.
If you want a good evening out this is a great casual place to visit. The food is delicious and their prices are good. I have been there twice and the vibe is really nice, both times we had to make reservations as they were quite busy, however that did not affect the service and we could enjoy the evening.
I have had the privilege of quite literally growing up in this restaurant.
I ate my very first prawns and clams here.. in fact probably had my first ever experience with any seafood here.
Food.
The food exceptional. On the odd chance there's a mishap in the kitchen and you receive the wrong order you can still guarantee that what ever you were served will still be delicious!
Service.
The service unfortunately is inconsistent. Some times it's perfect and there is nothing to fault and other times the serving staff and unprepared or miss place your order. However the amazing food and cheap prices make it all worth it in the end.
Walk through the door and you are in a time-warp. Fantastic! Old wood bar counter, ancient tables covered with plastic table cloths. Soccer mementos all over the place. And full of regulars.
Fresh bread rolls with butter are delicious with the home-made peri peri sauce.
The meal was spectacular. Chourico starter was awesome. Sausage complimented perfectly by some pickled vegetables.
The mains were super. For the first time in ages got an Espetada done properly. Rare meat, salty outside and grilled taste on the fat. One of the few places that actually does it right. The King Prawns with lemon butter were rated by my daughter as the best she has had away from the ocean!
Highly, highly recommended. Unpretentious, friendly spot with awesome food.
A hidden gem it is, albeit quite a drive, but worth it. Don't let the location put you off. Stop reading my review and just GO!
We were a table of 4 and devoured the mouth watering platter which consists of giblets, trinchado, chouriço, livers and calamari - every single element was spot on, tender and tasty, each cooked in a beautiful sauce which we soaked up with the bread provided.
The mains are served with a choice of salad, white rice and fried chips (one can opt to have half and half of the carbs). The chips are cut in rounds, so they are super crispy.
Two of us, including myself, tried the prawns which were cooked to perfection and were well seasoned, my husband had the piri piri chicken and our other friend has the espetada.
Every dish was super tasty, we were all impressed.
In summary: the portions are large, the food is cooked well and very flavourful, and the prices are excellent!
The menu says it all, Best Espatada I have ever had. Also love their Peri Peri chicken The food here is very good and resealable priced. Good vibe.

Being Porra, I'm always on the lookout for some of the best Portuguese restaurants in town and I stumbled upon this 3.7 rated spot in Oakdene, and oh my word! What a surprise. An indication is that the parking is full. Friendly waitresses, good wine selection, super affordable prices. Had maybe my best ever Trinchado! Melt in your mouth stuff! I will detour in future to have a meal here.

Hidden Gem!!! Portuguese cuisine at it's beat! Regulars spending some time at the bar, entertainment to the rest of the patrons. Food affordable and so tasty! Yum.
I only recently discovered this gem. Great Portuguese food at affordable prices. Really enjoyed the chicken liver starters, snails & prawns. Great service.

There is a wonderful 'local' vibe in this no frills restaurant. I ordered the Espetada which was okay - i've had better, Also tasted the Peri Peri chicken which was also okay. Found service really slow. The proprietor told us there was a 45 minute wait for chicken - why? This must be their signature dish?
Wow I was so impressed with the food and the prices!! Definitely worth the trip to the "Deep South" :) Buzzy and friendly place. The outside section could have done with a sweep... Just saying.

After hearing amazing things about this place we decided to check it out on a Friday afternoon.
The atmosphere at Madeira is really quite something. It takes a minute or two to get used to but once you get a feel for the place it really is quite a vibe. The decor and tableware are very basic, however they really compliment the character of the restaurant.
To kick things off I ordered their Chourico starter which was delicious. The sausage was cooked perfectly and the pickled peppers and onions were incredible. After the starter I indulged in their signature Trinchado main with fries. The meat was perfectly medium and the portion size extremely generous. The sauce was delightful and tied all the elements of the dish together. It may actually have been the greatest Trinchado I have had especially considering how reasonably priced it was.
The only problem I experienced during my visit here was the service which was unbearably slow. We were here on a Friday afternoon during peak hour so it is somewhat understandable however we had to call our waiter over numerous times to enquire about drinks that we had ordered which never arrived. We also ended up waiting for nearly an hour for our mains and when our order arrived there were some issues and a slight mix up with two of the dishes.
All problems aside, we really enjoyed our time here. I must say that had their food not been so amazing I probably would have given a lower rating.
A wonderful evening spent with family. The food was delicious. I had the chicken and rib combo. Definitely not left hungry with the huge portions. Great atmosphere and good service. Will definitely go back!
Food is good and the service here is great... The only setback is that is more a bar with a kitchen than a restaurant. Other than that it was a good night out.
Do you enjoy great traditional Portuguese chicken or a totally over the top Espetada dripping with deliciousness. A no frills eatery but super value for money, quality meat and the portions are generous. They have a kiddies menu too. I would highly recommend the flavorsome peri-peri chicken. A full portion allows for a nice snack the next day! Salads are nothing fancy, using Iceberg lettuce as a base but are fresh with various dressings. The Espetada is fabulous for meat lovers, half portions are available. Most meals come with rice, baked potato or the yummy potato medallion chips. The Kingklip and Calamari were tender but on the plain side. A great accompaniment is the Katemba which you can order by the litre. Perfect for a winter's eve get together. Make sure you don't leave without a bottle of the "hot lips" chilli sauce. Matt.chittenden

I go to this little gem quite often and I really enjoy myself every time... It is a little out of the way but I think that adds to the fun of going there.
The meals are all really cheap in relationship to taste and enjoyment. We always have either a calamari, giblets or mussels starter. For mains, you literally can't go wrong with calamari, chicken or espetada!
Do yourself a favour and get to this place ASAP! There's a reason why you can't get a seat during peak times!

My friend and I wanted to go somewhere where we can chill, chat, have a drink and have a nibble. I came here a few years ago with family and remembered that the food was quiet good and thought why not.
As my friend never tried Portuguese food before, I thought let's make this an adventure. He gave me the dubious honour of ordering for the both of us; I thought, "cool, I'm up for the challenge."
We were greeted in a friendly manner and shortly got some freshly baked Portuguese bread roll with some butter for the side.
I ordered some chicken livers abd chouriço for starters. The chicken livers were good, slightly overcooked but the taste hit the spot. The chouriço came fried in a little sauce of its own (their house vinaigrette i suspect), nice and tangy and done just right. My friend enjoyed the chicken livers most in this round.
The restaurant has its house chilli sauce on each of the tables (which you can purchase a bottle if you wish to enjoy it at home). The house chilli sauce is one of the nicest i have tried, it has great flavor, just enough bite , a little tangue and not too hot. Just right!
For mains we ordered Portuguese Steak medium rare which comes with your choice of starch or salads; now the original waitor took the order wrong and out come mushroom steak to us, but the waitress apologised and before you no it it was rectified with the correct order. I suspect that the simply removed the sauced and added the garlic save but be as it may it was still very good. My steak was done to perfection whilst my friend's one was slightly over done, the chips were cut into slices and we're done just right and the salad was ok but needed more dressing ( which was also on the table if needed).
I must admit it was a seriously economical meal, seriously good value for money. I would come back for the quality and quantity.
Service was ok, I would give it a below average score but the waitress made up for it. She was polite and became attentive in the end. The atmosphere us relaxing and you can see that it's a hang out for many locals to come out for a drink or come watch their favorite team on their flat screens. Yes the place is rather vibey (this is not a date restaurant for the romantic at heart but if you the kind that doesn't mind chilling and having a drink with your partner with quiet a bit of noise in the back ground than this is your place..

Definitely one of my favourite Portuguese restaurants in Johannesburg ... Their starter platter a real treat , has chorizo, calamari, trishado, chicken livers served with bread also try their mushroom steak yum
With so many Portuguese Restaurants in the South, Madeira is definitely one of the better Restaurants in the South, Regents Park to be exact ! Portuguese restaurants are known for their prawns & peri-peri chicken which are standard menu items & these didn't disappoint ! Madeira is a great outing with friends & family wanting to enjoy a good meal whilst catching some sporting action. It's vibey & busy so make sure you book if you visiting ... especially on weekends ! Give it a try I'm sure you won't be disappointed ! I'll definitely go back !
