Review The Patisserie - Johannesburg

Nompumelelo Mgidlana
Food: There's a wide variety of foods to choose from which is great -both sweet and savoury. I had a cheese scone with jam with a hot chocolate. The scone was just perfect - not overpowering or too salty. It has a great balance between crunchy and soft. The hot choc was also divine. Atmosphere: Great hospitality, wonderful ambiance. The music that plays in the background is so soothing. The restaurant is quaint and styled absolutely beautifully. Great place for a coffee/meeting or a solo date.

I spontaneously visited this bakery as I was rather unprepared for my daughters birthday. Within 10minutes I had bought the most delicious and beautiful lemon poppyseed cake. The staff were professional and friendly and decorated the cake with fresh flowers and personalised the cake for me at no extra cost or effort on their side. Thank you, what a lovely place.

The best croissants and chocolate & custard brioche. I love that it is a small bakery, if you go later in the day you might not get what you looking for as they sold out. This is not a commercial bakery but an old school, story book bakery. I simply love it! Please make chocolate croissants

Absolutely loved it, food was delicious and the service excellent!

Amazing; A lovely place for some tea and a slice of cake. There's an assortment of freshly baked goodies on display at all times. The carrot cake I had was absolutely sensational. My friend had some sort of chocolate baked goodie, that wasn't anywhere near as attractive. I would definitely recommend coming here.

A beautiful bakery. Friendly staff with welcoming atmosphere. There are quite a few out of the way seats. Ideal for a high tea or posh get together. Prices are on the hefty side for the portions, however it is of good quality and served quickly. Staff started clearing tables and such prior to official closing time which made it feel like they might be pushing us out.

Looooove this place!!! Always freshly baked goods that taste like heaven! Still need to try the restaurant side though... Soon!!!

Intimate and stylish little French Patisserie in Illovo. Friendly service and quality coffee, cakes and savories. Love the interior, the colors, fresh roses and smiles that come with the food.
Leendert Haasbroek
Coffee shop with light meals and confectionery. Enjoyed the Croque Monsieur toast, cheese and ham dish with a cappuccino for brunch. Excellent service. Selection of cakes, sweet and savoury items.
Natalie Lazaris
I love this place. You could be in Paris, the decor and the music fits perfectly. Try the salmon fish cakes, they are out of this world.

Lovely place like a hidden gem. Enjoyed French toast and cappuccino a lot.
Noluthando Gqokoma
The vibe is great and food is good but the cakes are even better. They have a flourless cake which was divine
GRAY BRUNTON
This a nice little coffee come cake shop. One can sit down and have a small snack, or meal. NOT much to choose from the menu but that's what makes it special. Their French Toast is buy far the best in the North. And as for Willy the waiter, what a great character. If there is one draw back it would have to be the lady chewing gum behind the till, like a bovine.
Luz-Helena Beltrán Gomez
Dainty, delicious, elegant. Definitely a treat!!! The teacups and teapots are a dream
Kenna Williams
They make the best cakes ever. Don't go anywhere else......THE BEST!

. Wonderfully quaint . Pricey . Lovely baked goods
Deirdre Corthouts
Less choice since Covid-19.....light lunch was enjoyable. Good service and hygiene
Selaelo Sathekga
Amazing cakes! Fresh, delicious and the decor was fabulous, thanks!

The popularity of this place defies explanation. The pasteis de natas are not pasties de natas. They’re just standard custard tarts that you could buy at any grocery shop; also ordered some very expensive biscuits to take home and it was truly dull. The vanilla fudge was good though, but that’s about it
Ashdesai5
For the best cakes and pastries with a very cozy atmosphere, you cannot best the patisserie. Their breakfast/day menu is limited but that’s great, as you can treat yourself to a moorish pastry/cake instead or as well! Must go.
Lizelle Brink
They have a fantastic selection of freshly baked goods. The restaurant also does great breakfasts. When visiting them, the greatest challenge is deciding on what to order, as everything looks super delicious.

Visited the store in the Post office centre in Illovo this afternoon for a ladies high tea. It was a perfect choice. The centre is not too busy but central and easy to get to with ample safe parking. The store is pretty and quaint. Pink and white stripes adorn the walls along with various picture frames. We were served a variety of sweet and savory options. There was a special vegan assortment prepared especially for me as well. We sampled various hot drinks, juices and teas . Everything was delicious, served in the prettiest crockery with excellent presentation. Friendly attentive service.

I love to order cakes from this patisserie as they are to die for, especially the apple and walnut cake, cheese cake and red velvet. I was a bit disappointed with the selection of cakes when sitting at the bakery.

They didn’t have any of the above cakes available to order per slice and there selection of cakes was small.

We settled on a lemon tart which was nice and a slice of a biscuity chocolate cake, which was ok.
Dumisani Mbatha
Intimate and cozy. Brilliant service and treats are mouthwatering. Good hide out for a good and long conversation with an old friend. New spot found.
No Time To Waste
Good for baked goods. Awesome for it actually.
Regular food off the menu is just that: regular.

It gets pretty packed on Saturdays and so if you want their crazy yummy savoury baked goods, your better get there before they are sold out
JuicyLucy
Had a lovely relaxed morning tea here. Service was good, the waiter friendly. I had one of their quiches with a side salad. It was superb - one of the best quiches I've ever had. Very tasty filling, not too much egg and the crust was a perfect thickness. I finished if off with a delicious mini milk tart. Coffee was good too!
Anna Banana 🌻
Truly deserving of this rating! The staff are always smiling and are really talented bakers! Everything is beautiful, some even in the simplest way! Petite and sweet are the perfect combination here!

Always love the treats at The Patisserie. Tucked away in the post office centre Illovo, there's limited seating inside and some tables in the passageway outside. Lunches are good and light - quiche or tasty chicken pie with a small garnish salad. The real reason for our visit was a birthday treat. My children enjoyed selecting their cakes / macaroons from the treats on display. The cheesecake brownie was slightly dry and disappointing but the coconut cake, carrot cake, macaroons and lemon tart were delicious! It's quite pricey for what you get but one of the few patisseries in Jhb that's consistently good
The Food Musketeer
25.03.2017 Quaint little shop slightly tucked away. Has a small eating area. They usually have a variety of goodies on sale but if you get there late it's sold out. I always remember the huge meringue's catching your eye first as you walk in... delicious and chewy.

Always colourful and pleasant staff.
Neeta Raga-D
The coconut cake is off the charts! Love this place!

Had a take away slice, gobbled it before I could even take a pic.

There are so many awesome options to choose from. Quality Ingredients are used at the Patisserie.
Natalia Bonegio
This little place is lovely, and always busy, which I think is a testament to the quality of experience there.

While most of the foods and tarts were sold out by the time I sat down at 12pm, I had a lovely nutty chocolate brownie, and my boyfriend enjoyed his custard pastry. The coffee was also great, and the service decent.

I'll definitely give it another go, earlier in the day to try some of their tarts.
Brooke
I really enjoy myself every time I come to this little pink and white cafe that always smells like cake is being freshly made, which is probably the case.

I have however found the last few times I have been that they are usually out of the food I want and seem a little disorganized. I remember clearly the first time I went how impressed I was with the variety and quality of the food and cake, not to mentioned how adorable the place is.

The last three times I have been there it just seems a bit off. The pictures are crooked on the walls, they seem under stocked and the food a tad rushed.

The coffee is always good and the staff is kind and attentive and ready to help with a smile. If you want an adorable place for a girls lunch, or are really in the mood for some macaroons, stop by the Patisserie and try for yourself.
Nicolan Reddy
Really horrible service. Have to wait ages for my order to be taken....even longer for my order to arrive. Wanted to celebrate a special occasion with my girlfriend and they ruined it. Definitely never coming back here again.
Chev Nagiah
What crap service. Tea was weak. One teabag to a pot??? Waited ages for my scone, practically gave up. What a joke!!! The waiters don't even look at you when you order hence they don't bring your actual food.
Kirsten Strauss
The spacing of the tables are very close together in fact you could put your arm on their chair. Not sure about cleanliness. We got different menus at the table. Coffees came in different sizes and some of the cups were chipped. Pricing more than I would pay for what was delivered.
Eve
I stopped by for a coffee one day and tried their sweet treats once more.
I had a divine walnut tart. The crust was a little too hard but crunchy. The filling was divine!
Then I had an apple berry crumble which was also a bit hard on the crust side, but also tasty.
Service was great and the ambiance in the store is that of a cute french cafe ,filled with fresh flowers and lovely eats to look at.
********************************************************************************
After hearing so much about this place I've tried it a few times hoping to find the food item that will blow my mind. Unfortunately I find them over priced and average. The sweet items did not wow me .The Macarons were average and some over baked. The cake slices were sometimes dry as well.I would far rather go to Belles down the road

Cup of tea and a brownie... heaven! Lovely little spot with everything you could want in a coffee shop. Service is great with good knowledge of the products and the decor is delicious
Tiffany
The Patisserie's brownies are absolutely delicious. I've tried both the plain and the nutty ones and both are divine. The cupcakes (although sometimes you may need to place a special order for them) are absolutely beautiful. Not only are they decorated magnificently but they are extremely tasty too. I am a very loyal customer and look forward to my next visit shortly! 🍰🎂

Omg im in love with this cosy version of the franchise... Its such a romantic spot and their playlist enhances the romantic flamboyant vibes of the store we had the buttery delicious apple cake and the white and dark chocolate mousse cake - absolutely yum - will be going back especially with someone special
NazmiraS
This Parisian little coffee shop serves the best scones and delicious cakes. Their Illovo branch was the best kept secret until their branch opened in Rosebank. It does make it easier to just pop in for a cuppa more regularly though whilst shopping.

Great for catching up with friends outdoors - French style.

Lesego
Cute little shop. Service was great, food was tasty. However, it is so tiny. They really need to renovate the place.
I would recommend it for a quiet tea break, when one just wants to get away from the chaos.
Skye Da Silva
The Patisserie is well known as the 'ultimate tea and cake spot in JHB' and I'm not sure I agree. Don't get me wrong, it's a pleasant spot, with a variety of teas and cakes to choose from but when trying their famous rainbow cake - I was wowed by its appearance but not so much it's taste! I also find the atmosphere a bit chaotic rather than calming and relaxed, but having said all this, i think my expectations got the better of me. A lovely spot and will try it again sometime!

I visited The Patisserie today for Gran's birthday high tea. Having booked over a month in advance, I had been looking forward to trying The Patisserie and all their delicious looking treats....

Arriving for our 12 o'clock booking, I got there to find that our table of 10 had not yet been setup. Whilst I was shuffled to the corner of a very crammed store, waiters scrambled around to put 3 little tables together to accommodate our entire party - leaving us squashed and two of us in the path to both the wait station and loos. Off to a rocky start, the waitress quickly announced that she needed our tea and coffee order but this was not included in the high tea cost per head (odd) - perplexed by this, considering tea is a fairly large part of a high tea we asked her what we could expect for the day. This caused a lot of confusion but after consulting the manager, we were told our coffees and teas would be included, great. We were then presented with an array of savoury pastries, sadly none of the traditional sandwiches or similar you'd expect from a high tea and all options served were mediocre and fairly bland. Anyway, our sweet selection arrived later on and more tea and coffee was ordered - these were much better and a great treat to those with a sweet tooth.

The bakery was very over crowded so the afternoon was nipped short. When it came time for the bill, we found that we were charged for tea and coffee after all - apparently one needs to assume that only one cup per person is included. We were also over charged for an extra person and had to endure the waitress moaning to the manager about us within ear shot... The entire experience was quite a disappointment and not one that any of us would recommend, especially if you have high hopes of treating someone with a group of more than 4 guests.

The Patisserie is a lovely, girly spot for breakfast, lunch or tea and cake. With an array of mouth-watering cakes, pastries and desserts on display, you going to find it incredibly hard to resist. Just about everything is a winner, but I recommend starting with one of their homemade quiches followed by a red velvet cupcake.

After lunch today at The Thrupps Centre we walked across the road to visit The Patisserie. We've had numerous friends order their special occasion cakes from this establishment but never visited it ourselves before.

The cafe itself is quite small and cramped, but a very charming setting nonetheless. Staff, however, just left us standing at the counters. They weren't very interested in helping us out and ignored all eye contact. Grumpiness started setting in at the possibility that I was probably going to be leaving without any cake when eventually the owners emerged and helped us out. They were incredibly friendly and helpful. It makes it difficult to not love a place when you meet such lovely people!

I was feeling indecisive and greedy (as usual), so I took a little bit of almost everything on offer for take away. The coffee macaroon (melts in your mouth) and Opera cake were my fav! So for those of you that don't know what an Opera cake is- it's made with multiple layers of almond sponge cake soaked in a coffee syrup. It's also layered with ganache and coffee buttercream, and covered in a chocolate glaze. I was expecting a tiramisu sort of texture for some reason, but it's actually quite a dense cake. But I think that's what I love most about it for some reason. And it's the perfect balance between the coffee and chocolate flavours. In love!

I love The Patisserie. It's such a cute little coffee shop that makes you feel like you are actually sitting in Paris enjoying your afternoon cup of coffee. Their scones are delicious and their macarons are very good too. The staff are always friendly and I love the cute and quirky decor. I can definitely recommend the Patisserie for an afternoon slice of cake and hot drink.

Earlier I threw on my silk neck scarf and headed to The Patisserie for a lovely lunch. I had the delicious spinach and feta veg tart which came with a large fresh salad (and fantastic dressing!) At first, the price of R80 did put me off, but the generous serving made up for it. I would highly recommend this spot for a quick lunch or tea, and will be going back soon to try the many sweet treats on display in the quaint chic little set up.

My GO-TO place for birthdays and special events!! Whether it be for a Big bold birthday cake, cupcakes or dessert treats, I've never been disappointed!
From a Simple vanilla cake with a decadent Nutella icing, to a Zingy moist lime cake with a pink marshmallow frosting- Absolutely Delicious!
Ive also had their mille-feuille,Cheesecake, Brownies,Carrot Cake and macaroons.
The inside is like a cute little french patisserie with the black and white tiled floors and the old style french decor.
Ive heard good things about their light lunches so will go back to try that some time.

Funny how there will be absolutely nothing wrong with the food but the service will spoil the whole experience. The waitress was walking around dragging her feet you could hear her coming a mile away!!! Very irritating. The cheesecake was awesome

My wife has been telling me about The Patisserie in Illovo, and we just haven’t had a chance to go there until today. The Patisserie is a small little shop selling breakfasts, light lunches and lots of pastries, cakes, and tarts. Feeling for some breakfast I ordered the scrambled eggs with rye toast and crispy bacon. A little over priced for the eggs and bacon, but nonetheless it was very delicious. we couldn’t leave without tasting some of the pastries. If I could have, I would have loved to taste everything but we had to narrow it down to a few. We had a Mille-Feuille, a crème brulee tart, and a granadilla tart. All were absolutely fabulous, and we will be coming back.
Anandie
Lovely little spot for divine cakes and sweet things. The selection and quality of the pastries and cakes are great. And you can also get fabulous breakfasts here.

For a long time I thought that The Patisserie in Illovo was my little secret. Luv'd there quaint setting and lovely simply breakfast offering made with the best ingredients. My favourite is their red velvet cupcakes :-)

I absolutely loved this little French style café/bakery. My sister and I decided to pop in for breakfast the one morning as The Patisserie has been on our restaurant bucket list for a while now.

I always find that most restaurants struggle to make the perfect coffee. They either make the milk too hot and then burn the coffee or otherwise it's too cold and it has to be reheated. My sister and I both ordered skinny lattes which were just perfect in terms of taste and temperature.

To eat, I ordered the poached eggs with crispy parma ham on rye bread which was lovely. My sister ordered the baked beans on toast which was just as delicious. We then shared a custard mille-feuille - this was an absolute treat and probably one of the best I've had!

The restaurant also offers an amazing selection of pastries, tarts, cakes and other baked goods. We ordered some of the mini tarts to take home. These are a little pricey for the size that they are but they are so delicious. The passion fruit tart is a must have.

The Patisserie is definitely worth visiting if you are in the Illovo area - great food, excellent service and a lovely vibe. I can't wait to go back!

The Patisserie is this pretty little place in Illovo and I had been wanting to go there for a while. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The place itself is quite small but it is cosy. The staff were very pleasant and attentive. Now let me get to the food. We ordered 2 skinny lattes to drink. Most restaurants in Joburg do not get the temperature of the milk in the coffee right but at this place the coffee was just the perfect temperature. I ordered the baked beans on toast and my sister had the poached eggs with parma ham. Who knew that baked beans with feta and olives on rye would taste so good. My sister's breakfast was also delicious. After this we decided to share the mille feuille. This was the most heavenly mille feuille I have every tasted. It has got to be the best in Joburg. We also took home some of the biscotti and mini sweet tarts which we had for breakfast today. I cannot wait to go back to The Patisserie with my husband.

This is my favorite French cafe outside of France. The place is decorated with its pastries and sweet things which makes it extra hard not to leave with something nice to nibble on. The food menu is somewhat limited and the food portions are French portions (from the perspective of a man). All in all a really great little cafe with good coffee and well made food!
Inge Nefdt
I just couldn't resist 🙈 Their baked cheesecake and chocolate brownies are too delicious 😍 Sweet ✔️ Fresh ✔️ Happy Heart ✔️ You can't always get a seat so I grab a take away and go.
Bene Katabua
The desserts look better than they taste. I was disappointed by that. The coffee, tea and other drinks were nice though. Really liked the variety. I'd go back for that, more than anything..
Maria Alves Vd Merwe
What a little gem. Great food, great atmosphere and a really great selection on their high tea menu. Perfect for a brunch out with the girls.
Sandhya Naidoo
Ordered the Petit Four's after the different flavours were presented to me
(Passion fruit & Pistachio) it was very mediocre & uninspiring
the fondant was heavy couldn't identify the
flavours which were weak, the cake was soggy and tasteless possibly from
the fondant.. Disappointed and not the quality you would expect from
an upmarket Patisserie..
Saiyuri
Came here for a bridal shower high tea not too long ago. The decor is really pretty and the cakes are lovely! Nice little venue, service a tad slow but the owner was quite friendly.
Alexandra
I have been to the Patisserie on numerous occasions and I have not been disappointed to date. The waiters are always friendly and observant. The food comes quickly. It is always fresh and the desserts and pastries are delectable. A must if you have not yet been.
Middleclassconcerns
Perfect spot for catching up with a friend or some alone time. Service is tepid but the food is worth it. Devoured a tastey chicken pie and threw back 5 macaroons without any guilt.
MozambikGirl
They do not do deliveries. After being told this the woman on the line rushed to put the phone down on me. No further assistance. For that kind of treatment their heavy prices are not worth it.
Shannon Correia
This patisserie is as pink and pretty as it gets! There are many tables and the menu goes beyond just desserts. The main reason I keep coming back is the unlimited and instant wifi connection! The service, although friendly, is quite slow and the cafe itself is generally on the more expensive side. The desserts, however, are good and The Patisserie has won some highly acclaimed awards! :)
Caitlin Hanck
Had such an awesome time at The Patisserie. I met a friend for some morning tea and cake and it was most delicious! We tried a red velvet cheesecake brownie, white chocolate mousse cake and a granadilla tart which were all really tasty! Will definitely be back!
Brooklyn J. Pakathi
Small and comfy space with amazing cakes and cookies and sandwiches. Nice for a midweek lunch out of the office. Great seating and atmosphere
Wenchy
From the decadent, detailed and delightful surroundings to the craft of baking, The Patisserie is a delight! The cakes are beautiful. Savouring every moment.

Service is excellent with hands on management. The price is justified!
Talitha Alink
Really quirky looking bakery that just adds to the appeal. The carrot cake is the best I have ever had the pleasure of eating and any cupcake here is worth a try.
Darryl W
High score achieved for being the best looking bakery in town. Oozing with sexy food appeal. I've had tea and scones plus 1 lunch here - home baked pie. Good food. The pastries look great.
Brenda Wardle
Purchased a 25th birthday red velvet cake for my daughter. It was the most divine cake ever eaten! Pity I was in rush and unable to enjoy a cup of tea!
Luke
Mediocre cappuccino and card machines didn't work, here's hoping the cakes I bought are less disappointing than the staffs blasé attitudes.
Jill Okkers
Always a treat. Good coffee, amazing options at the counter, and the menu is always spot on. The dishes coming out of the kitchen are fresh, tasty and brilliant.
I love that it's opposite my flat, so a quick pop by for something delectable is easy!
Zara Abdulla
I thoroughly enjoy The Patisserie in Illovo. The ambiance is delightful and and the variety of cakes is abundant. The service is quick and friendly, and the owner is usually present. I wouldn't recommend the macarons, but I would definitely suggest the mille-feuille and/or the marshmallow cake.

I hear they've recently opened in Rosebank, I can't wait to try that branch out!
Jade Roberts
Tea and cake! It doesn't get better. And if you share my sentiments then The Patisserie should be on your "places to try in Joburg" list. Located in The Post Office Centre, there isn't much appealing about the outside of the centre, but as soon as you walk into this Parisian themed delight, you are transported into a world where sweets and treats are at your whim. After seeing other patrons being served food from the yummy looking menu I will definitely be going back to try some of it out on my next visit, but of course, I will need to leave space for more cake too :)
Zaakiyah
A lover of French style and sweet treats, therefore there was no better place for me to catch my morning dose of sweetness at The Patisserie. Bursting with pink and everything oh so girly , you soon realize its no ordinary coffee shop. But some sought of Parisian Patisserie taken straight from a movie set.It felt like I were back on holiday in Paris.

Its no doubt that all the baked goods looked and tasted oh SOgood. When you walk into the bakery it smells amazing and immediately makes your mouth wanna water. I found myself ordering their Famous Mille Feuille which was a winner!
The Macarons where chewy and disappointing.

My To Go Macron was pineapple.
Key Takeaways:

The CON: Slightly high priced,Chewy Macarons.

The PRO:Great quality and tasty baked goods. Pleasant customer service thus made the outing more wonderful.

Price Range: R80 (FOR TWO)

By far the best Parisian themed bakery in Johannesburg!

Think Audrey Hepburn meets Candy Floss.

Garth Balabanoff
The Patisserie offers the most delicious variety of sweets and treats. I've never actually sat down and ordered but rather have popped in a few times to grab a little something (and on the odd occasion the big something, being one of their cakes). Pop in if you haven't!
Jayson Coomer
Came in for:

1. Baguette - because who needs Banting, really? And
2. Dark chocolate brownies - because...no reason.

Both accoladed, both delicious.

But my favourite part was the bees getting punch drunk on custard danish (see photo).
Sonja Offwood
The food and coffee was great, I had the toasted banana bread with cream cheese and berries, and I would go back to have the same dish. I would also love to try some other dishes and cakes and pastries. The actual venue is however a little random, it does feel more like a fetch and go type bakery than a sit down place due to both the decoration and the exact location in the post office centre.
Tylene Claassen
I went here yesterday with my boyfriend on my cheat day thinking I would treat myself to something delicious and I must say I was extremely disappointed. We had the red velvet cheesecake, white chocolate mouse cake, granadilla tart, lemon meringue, granadilla cookie, mutton pot pie and a quiche.
The quiche was burnt at the bottom and ice cold, the pie was overpriced and cold as well. The deserts had no taste and was below average. The waiters were very friendly but unfortunately the management was extremely arrogant and unwelcoming. Never going back there again.
Joash Narainsamy
I come here especially for their macaroons! Truly magnificent and arguably the best in Johannesburg! The rest of their fare is pretty good too. I don't care too much for their cafe menu though. Be warned, such great quality comes at a steep premium. Their macaroons are R12 each.
JR
Amazing cakes and yummy eats! Enough said! Because the review needs to be more than 140 characters I just wrote this last part. And this part.
Nadz
Heavenly Stuff! Utterly scrumptious! I don't normally like cakes but they have this kind of "mousse" versions of cakes! I'm sure there's a fancy term or name for it... But wowzer! ????. Amazeballs!
Janet Hofman
For the "best bakery in jo'burg" I was underwhelmed by the inability (and unwillingness) to meet my special cake requirements. I would have at least expected that an enquiry was made with the baker before a "no" response was provided.
Michael Derek Clifford
How can you call yourself a patisserie !!

Disgusted at the R52.00 I paid for 4 bite sized rock hard meringues that you tried to pass off as macarons.

A good patisserie chef would make sure the produce they sell in a Patisserie is of only the best standard!!! Otherwise call yourself a bakery!

A macaron should have a thin, crisp shell that yields to a slightly chewy, airy interior, then a lush complementary filling.
Natalie Katz
I love The Patisserie. It is such a gorgeous little spot in the Post Office Centre. I love the décor, the food presentation is glorious and the food is delicious.

They have Wi-Fi which makes it the perfect spot for a light breakfast and a coffee. Their chai lattes are absolutely delicious. I ordered the French toast with the fruit compote, crème fraîche, fresh banana and honey, it was spectacular.

The service was okay, we waited a while for the bill and ended up going to the till to pay because no one came with the card machine. They are quite expensive but they are in Illovo after all ;-)
Lauras World
In this Post Office centre, absolutely everything is a winner so I was keen to try this pink and white, French styled restaurant and bakery! The Patisserie was so lovely on my first brief visit that I decided recently to head back with camera and lenses in hand and I was not disappointed! Did I mention that The Patisserie was voted to have the 'Best Macaroons (yes Macaroooooonnns) in Joburg' & 'Best South African' Coffee shop 2013? My expectations for both the coffee and macarons were high the day that I walked in!

As I sat down, I was greeted by its owner Helen, with seventeen years experience in all things baking. Helen was both informative and friendly the day that I popped in and she is often on hand to ensure that things run smoothly in her little spot. Onto their food. From the menu, so far, I have tried their famous red velvet cupcake (which is blue), delicious assorted coffees, and macarons in rose, mixed berry and pistachio flavours so far.

*Recommendation: Everything is delicious, but for me the rose flavoured macarons were incredible and I would highly recommend them to accompany any beverage you may select on your visit to this little gem!

Love this place. Probably the King of Patisseries in Johannesburg.

They make the absolute best tasting cakes.
If you're looking for fancy artsy type cakes perhaps try somewhere else. If you love beautiful cakes that look and taste absolutely amazing then this is absolutely the place for you to order cakes for an event. Well cakes, scones, muffins, petit fours, ugh everything is great.

The shop is a little small but you do feel like a little princess. Friendly, warm service and plenty of sugar highs

[This review is based on high tea only.]
Overpriced, lack of high tea ambiance and dry cakes.

I enjoy the pastries from The Patisserie, which is why I was disappointed by their high tea. For R225 per person, we received a three-tier savory sandwiches, a three-tier pastries plate, a choice of tea/coffee and a glass of champagne.

The savories included cheese and tomato sandwich, salmon croissant, spinach and feta triangles and a puff pastry meatball. Even though the croissant and triangles were very delicious, I was not overly impressed as it felt like an everyday lunchbox meal.

For the pastries, the bottom tier is some kind of cake/bread, the second tier is chocolate coffee cake, and the top is macarons and petit fours. The cake/bread thing was incredibly dry and hard to swallow. On the contrary, the chocolate coffee cake was moist, flavourful and delicious. The macarons were perfectly made with a smooth and shiny shell, and the filling is firm and slightly chewy. The four petits were way too sweet for my liking though. All in all, it was very average.

The Patisserie is located in the post office centre and is always packed with people, therefore I felt like I couldn't relax and enjoy the experience. The five of us were squashed together and had to move the tea cups around to make everything fit on the table. In addition, the stainless steel high tea stands looked a bit cheap and did not complement the ceramic flowery tea pots. In high tea, not only the foods but the overall experience is a very important factor to me, so I was not satisfied by this visit. On the up side, the manager and the waitress are very friendly and gave us a lot of attention (maybe because my friend was wearing a bride-to-be sash?).

Bottomline: I love the cakes from The Patisserie, but I won't recommend the high tea to anyone.

Pros: Good service
Cons: Low price-to-quality, cramped,

The Patisserie definitely tops my list of best 'patisseries' in Joburg. A wide variety of freshly baked tarts, cakes, pies etc all beautifully displayed and ready to eat. The place is quite small and there could be a wait to get a table. The owner is very friendly and stops by every table to check up on the patrons - a nice touch.

I really enjoyed their house lemonade and the chocolate custard brioche. I will definitely be back to try some of the other pastries.

There are so many patisseries in Illovo area but this one is definitely one of the best. We had a light lunch and treated ourselves to some delicious pastries. There are so many options to choose from which means you'll end up leaving very full and way over your daily calorie allowance! We had two savoury pies (the vegetable one was to die for!) and a custard-chocolate brioche and a red velvet cheesecake brownie. Yes, they were just as good as they sound! I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from going back for more decadent delights! Definitely a must if you're in the area!

Absolutely gorgeous spot to catchup with your girlfriends over a pot of tea and something yummy to nibble. Both sweet and savoury menu options will not disappoint. Red velvet cupcakes to die for. Great service. Superb selection of freshly baked treats that will leave you wanting to buy the entire shop!

We visited The Patisserie for breakfast today and also took away some baked goods. We ordered scrambled eggs with toast and also had their fresh fruit juice - a blend of apple, carrot and ginger - which was quite nice. Overall a good experience with pleasant service. There were so many yummy looking pastries and cakes on offer, we had to tear ourselves away from the place.

Popped last Friday afternoon for tea - I was expecting a 'ladies tea spot' and was surprised when there were several tables of men - so clearly the pink, flowery detail is not a deterrent .. we were planning on tea with cakes to share but agreed the mille-feuille looked to scrumptious to share .. needless to say, not only did it taste as fabulous as it looked but the portions were generous and we all had a treat for dessert that evening. Friendly and efficient waiter and a lovely, light spot to spend an afternoon catching up with friends.

Parisian kitsch meets Breakfast at Tiffany’s: perfect for ladies’ luncheons. The décor is black and white checked floors, tables of pastries on display and pink and cream striped wallpaper, absolutely stunning! And leaving empty handed is a sin. A slice of the moist dark chocolate cheesecake and the red velvet cupcakes are guaranteed to lift anyone’s spirits.
What we ate: rose and coffee macaroons, red velvet cupcakes, meringue, petit fours and topped it all off with a massive slice of chocolate cheesecake!

Such rude old women running this business! I came in with such a smile to place a specific cake order and the lady in charge of cakes Helen was so rude to me and didn't want to listen to any of my ideas but instead told me to email some pictures and she made it seem like a simple cake request would be too difficult. I then emailed the pics and didn't receive Andy feedback and I needed it in a few days. I called the shop and Helen refused to help me and put someone with less authority to assist me. They then gave me another email address and said they don't use the other one. I told the got her lady what I wanted and received something so disappointing today! So disgusting! And my sister collected the cake and Helen was so rude. She then said she didn't receive them emails! She gave me an email address she doesn't use! Disgusting service and women.

Will never order from this place again.

When mentioned that I will post a review on zomato they then they kicked my sister out and and refused to give her the cake.

Absolutely horrendous

Our favourite spot for a macaron & coffee. Lovely atmosphere created by this picture perfect patisserie. Not only is the food delicious but it is all beautifully presented.

The Patisserie is fabulous!! If you have not tried it, do yourself a favour and spoil yourself. The bakery itself is quaint and fun, with old school touches and pretty pinks. The sweet stuff on offer is fabulous - the apple Danish, red velvet cake and brownies are all a must but don't negate the savory offerings. The pies are amazing, the quiches are delicious but it's the salmon fish cakes which really take the cake. Eat them fresh, store them in the freezer... They are too good!! For a sit down or take away, this spot is a win.

Absolutely amazing patisserie, some of the best cakes, biscuits and macarons in South Africa. They waiters / helpers are always very friendly. It's always a pleasure going there.

I really enjoy sweet treats (when I am not on my crazy fitness & health mission) and always on the look out for patisserie's to test...esp the macarons. I am a macaron monster! I can say I enjoyed their macarons, they had so many flavours to choose from but I decided on the lavender.

I really like the décor, it is a French bistro chic style. I sat inside, looking at the pink & white stripe wall...which I thought was so awesome...did I mention I really like the décor!

I had a cappuccino and a few sweet treats to share. The mini baked cheese cake was by far my favourite - it was divine!

This is is a great place for a little high tea or just a tasty sweet treat. Yummy!

Not bad red velvet!

I popped in to meet some friends for a quick lunch. Great looking displays and decor hidden in the back of a small shopping centre. I ordered a chicken pie which came with a palm size portion of salad. The pie itself was also palm sized. R75 for what I was served was over the top. I found the service very slow and the tables are tightly spaced turning quaint into cramped. I wont be returning. I felt like id been robbed.

Great variety of treats! Good for a cuppa, but if you like your coffee hot, be sure to request it. Food turn around when busy can be slow(an hour odd), but breakfast variety is pretty decent. Will def come back and give the Patisserie another go.

The first thing I want to say is that the food is delicious, especially the cakes and confections.

I was so looking forward to trying out Patisserie but when I got there the service was shocking. The women at the counter looked at me as if I was speaking another language. I felt awkward and rushed to pick something and leave so as to stop making a nuisance of myself. Having made the trip for someone's birthday I was exceptionally disappointed with the way I was treated. Maybe next time I will wear my tiara and ballgown to be worthy of adequate service.

This is my go-to bakery. Everything from the macaroons to the orange loaf to the lemon meringue cupcakes are just divine!

Always superb. So many choices. Friendly people. Always interesting treats on the menu. Yum yum. Lovely ambience and decor. Don't change a thing.

My wife and I visited the Patisserie for breakfast before we went off to vote. I had heard a lot about this place and looked forward to it. We were not disappointed.

As you enter you realise that this is no ordinary cafe/bakery. They have taken the theme to the next level and it felt like we were back on honeymoon in Paris. The only problem is that there are too many delicious mouth watering cakes you have to look at it.

Our breakfast was good. My wife tried out the mini veg Pie and chicken Pie. Both very tasting. Felt the chicken pie was a little too dry.

I had Croque Monsieur - loved this when I was in France. It was yum. No other way to put it. It was however their own variation of the dish but was great and the Parma Ham was fresh and fantastic quality. Very curious to know where they get it from.

Don't know why but the Hot Chocolate was the best Hot Chocolate I have ever had.

Will return again. Probably not for breakfast but just to try out all of those cakes.

When I first found this gem, it set me back a few bucks cos I went back weekend after weekend. Want a little treat then head there for some B-1 chocolate cake or some carrot cake. They do so many good deserts that I can't name all my favourites. You can buy full cakes too which is handy. I just wish the drinks menu was a little more extensive. But go there, you'll love it!!

This is such a fabulous place if you love chic French style décor and decadent sweet treats. I just love the atmosphere there...it is unfortunately in a centre but is still worth a visit. The cakes are to die for...as well as the biscuits and macarons. We also tried their savoury chicken pie - wow soft pastry and such delicate flavours.

We had to take a few treats home - so got the baked cheese cake for my husband and it was out of this world. So creamy and delicious.

This is definitely a great little place and they are now offering high teas...perfection!

It's a beautiful little bakery. Lots of tasty treats . Love their red velvet cupcakes . Their salads is also good. Nice place to meet for coffee with friends. My mom loved it.

This place was amazing! It is such a cute place. I went there with the girls for lunch and I was so pleasantly surprised! The walls are painted in pink and white stripes with white finishes. It is absolutely adorable.

The baked goods looked SO good. I had a scone which was so fresh and delicious. The others had open toasties and they looked delicious too.

When you walk into the bakery it smells amazing and immediately makes your mouth water. We took a few cupcakes and macaroons home to try. The cupcakes were SO delicious! We ordered the red velvet cupcakes. The macaroons were a bit disappointing. They were a bit too chewy.

You can order cakes and cupcakes for parties etc. When we were there a lady was having a baby shower and she had ordered the cutest cake.

I definitely recommend this place!

A good place for girls to meet up ... with candy floss walls and chandeliers ... accompanied with the sweet smell of pastries and tarts and hot and cold meals ... Patisserie has been a favourite for years. Best is in Winter, their hot soups and bread accompaniments ... coffees and teas galore ... with cute little teacups to go with it ... not a fan of their homemade lemonade tho (but each to their own) ... have not been in ages, but plan to go very soon.

Really disappointing experience with shame Parisian decor and patisserie that was uninspiring and not very tasty.

The Patisserie is a charming "French" themed bakery and café located in the old Post Office Centre in Illovo.

I love their fish cakes and the pies are excellent as well. Some may find this place pricey for their kind of lunch, but I don't think it's far fetched.

There is a lot of charisma crammed into the tiny restaurant, and their selection of sweets, cakes and homemade pastries are some of the best in town.

Order any of the cakes in advance for pick up, as they usually fly off the shelves in the first few hours of trading.

This is pretty much the Laduree of Jozi.

I try to eat healthily, and a day with a business breakfast followed by a networking lunch makes me nervous. Fortunately the menu at The Patisserie, a treasure of a cafe tucked away in the Illovo Post Office Centre, offers some health-friendly options for vegetarians. I enjoyed a generous fruit salad with sweet strawberries, fresh kiwi, firm banana and smooth papaya, served with plain Greek yogurt, a crunchy, mixed muesli and a swirl of honey. The food is a bit on the pricey side, but the fresh and wholesome ingredients make it worth the cost. The waiter was prompt and friendly. We sat outside on the walkway, but the decor inside looks charming, with pink accents and flowery touches.

This little gem is a real find and if you pop in for a Saturday morning breakfast you won't be disappointed! If you can tear yourself away from staring at the mouth-watering array of pastries and treats inside (think macaroons and petit fours in every colour u can think of and rich looking chocolate tarts) grab a table and enjoy a relaxed breakfast! Their scrambled egg comes with parma ham instead of bacon, a welcome spin on the usual oily fry-up and their coffee is rich and smooth. The decor is rather girly and romantic but I'm sure your man wouldnt object to a home-made pie or a freshly baked slice of something heavenly! The service is also great, we were served by a very jolly waiter who knew his food!

I originally rated The Patisserie a 2.5 (sorry!) I revisited them with their new owners and it is a million times better! There is something for everyone on the menu, nothing is too expensive and the place is bustling with people and lovely romantic music. Try the toasted banana bread- unbelievable!

After hearing a lot about this place, I visited with a friend to try out some red velvet cupcakes. The shop is small and has loads of indulgent baked goods. It's like a little heaven in here. It's very difficult to decide what to buy if you just go here. We ended up buying the cupcakes and I found them to be a okay, not fantastic.
