Review Thai Cafe - Johannesburg

Mandi van der Walt
Oh wow.. I can't find the words... this is probably the best curry I have ever had. We had the Green Curry and rice with tofu and the black Bean noodles with tofu. (in the pictures) We had a fantastic and very helpful waiter that served us with a smile. Vegan and vegetarian friendly.

EDIT: The food portions have become really disappointing. The food prices were increased and portions decreased. If you order a thai specialty meal (which basically constitutes everything on the menu), you are likely to get a bowl full of sauce and five scrawny pieces of whatever protein you choose. The last time I was there, I refused to take my food when I discovered it was just a bowl of sauce, lots of rice and a couple of chicken strips. Totally not worth it anymore. I used to love this cafe. *********************************************************** I love this cafe! The food is amazing! The crispy duck (picture attached) with Jasmine rice is my favourite! You can ask them to make it as spicy as you'd like. Really small cafe but great place. Please visit!

Oh wow. Food is seriously scrumptious. Service was good. The night we went it was quiet so we didn't wait long for our food. Thai food really is delicious. The flavours and taste of the Thai cuisine is amazing. I had the chicken coconut soup for starters and the crispy duck with steamed rice for dinner. Most yummy.

Absolutely great Duck. Service very good. Ismail and William always take great care of us.
Eliyah Sischy
Absolutely delicious Thai food - best I've had in a long time. We ordered a few dishes for delivery (only R50 delivery charge) and they arrived in record time. Their curries are flavourful and have a perfect balance of heat. I definitely intend to visit soon.

Such a nice cafe i ordered crispy duck it was so amazing i like this cafe

This little restaurant really caught me by surprise. The food is close to authentic than anything I've tried so far, like Erawan for example and the price is deceny too. My Thai girlfriend was impressed as well so we are now frequent visitors to the place.

We arrived before they officially opened, yet we were greeted with the warmest welcome. The food was so devine we instantly ordered take out for dinner. Thank you for an awesome experience!

Great service and the food was amazing.. Crispy duck is a must !! But all dishes were delicious... can't wait to visit again.

Very good food ! Service has a bit to be desired for but only due to the manager being so busy with orders! Definitely will be going back. They also do Mr delivery incase you dont want to take a trip to the cosy thai cafe

Nice food for a good price. Very peaceful admosphere and clean restaurant. We enjoyed the Pad Thai as well as some other Thai dishes.

Authentic Thai food, best Thai restaurant so far in JHB. The food, and atmosphere remind me of Thailand, my personal favourite is the crispy duck with egg fried rice.

Honestly I am shocked. The person on the phone was very brash. An hour an a half after we place an order for delivery we try to call them to see how far along our order is, no answer but they call us back, when we do ask he tells us his airtime died and so was not able to get our street address, this was after it was spelt out and double checked. We ended up getting no food after waiting 2 hours.

I haven’t been to Thai cafe in a while and went last night to find that the standard has dropped. Firstly the place is looking a bit shabby from the outside- signage broken , missing letters which isn’t a good. We had a chicken green curry was not authentic nor tasty and was very thick like it was thickened with fresh cream or something else. The stir fried cashew and chili paste was a bit too sweet. The staff were unfriendly and couldn’t wait to usher us out so they could close. Maybe they were just having an off night but I won’t go back in a hurry.

Do yourself a favour and try the Khao Soi Chang Mai noodles with tofu-it is by far, my favorite noodle dish I’ve ever had! Super fragrant, spicy-but in a bearable way, and not as heavy as it looks. <br/><br/>The prawn tempura and egg fried noodles are also some of my favourite dishes. I often order these via Mr Delivery and I never regret it! Really consistently delicious food. 👍🏼

Ok, Thai hot is hot, the food was really delicious. Good portion size. The green curry was very tasty. Service was good. The beer is original and served cold. Nyc place, will be back.

Second time trying Thai Cafe. I ordered take away with my husband, we ordered two dishes to share. The service was friendly. The restaurant itself does not appeal to me. I only view it as a take away restaurant as the decor just doesn't do it for me. We ordered the chef's specials: duck red curry and a cashew chili paste dish with chicken. We were immediately put off when we found a huge egg shell in our noodles! I mean how did it even end up there? The duck red curry was not good. The duck was so tough my husband thought it had bones in it but it ended up being just so tough. The vegetables were crisp which was nice. We ordered medium heat as my husband can't eat full heat but it was way too hot for medium and he was unable to finish the meal. The other dish was also not enjoyable. It was definitely better than the red curry but we couldn't stomach it. The food is quite pricey and I've had cheap Chinese takeaway that has been of better quality.

Chicken cashew nut with chili paste.<br/>Chefs special noodle dish with prawn.<br/>Both so delicious and flavourful. Gives me a taste of Thailand in Joburg!

What an awesome discovery! The food is great! <br/><br/>Super authentic Thai food. Made me miss Thailand so much! <br/><br/>Very friendly staff. The atmosphere is very relaxed and decor is good. Lots of options available. I had the Pad Thai with Tofu and it tasted just as I remember from Patong. <br/><br/>Definite must try
Candice
I always get the Ba Me Prik Phoa with glass noodles and OrderIn messed up my order, so Thai Cafe personally delivered my correct order at no extra charge and it’s perfect. Thank you so much ☺️

Entirely mediocre food with indifferent service and the ambiance of canteen. Nothing authentically Thai at all - except for the Singha beer.
Tamara Reddy
A quiet little Thai restaurant on the streets of Greenside.<br/><br/>Service was excellent and our waiter was up to scratch with our orders.<br/><br/>To begin, my husband and I had the chicken and prawn spring rolls served with a sweet chilli sauce. For our main dish we both had the stir fried cashew with chicken and opted for noodles. All dishes have the option of mild, medium, hot or Thai style spice.<br/><br/>My husband enjoyed the chai tea with honey and ginger.

EDIT: changing my review, have come for dinner, cannot order a bottle of white wine as the waitress says they do not have. How does this place function? Now I know really not to come back. Ordered a takeaway. I really love this place and the crispy duck is my favorite dish, but this time, a miss rather than a hit. Rice and broth was amazing, duck left a ton to be desired.

Loved our first visit.. Food was authentic and very tasty. Having been to Thailand and eaten, cooked authentic.. I was impressed<br/>Tried twice thereafter and unfortunately not consistent in taste and quality of the dishes. Very sparse on the vegetables and chicken portions definitely not the same.<br/>Unfortunately very disappointing 😥 and therefore give it a 2 🌟 rating

I have found another great Thai restaurant! The cafe style is great and the food is right up there with my other favourites.... if not better. I really enjoyed the crispy Wonton starters and the Phad Thai is well worth a try.<br/><br/>This one is well worth a try

I am a huge fan of Thai/Asian cuisine and I was so excited to try this restaurant out. It was a chilly evening and it was the perfect weather for some spicy food so my boyfriend and I decided to go have dinner here.<br/><br/>The restaurant is small with really pretty decor. For a Friday evening, it was very quiet. There was only one other table occupied besides us. We sat on the table in the corner closest to the kitchen area.<br/><br/>Based on the reviews and pictures on Zomato, it was so difficult to decide what to order as everything looked and sounded so delicious. I love a good green curry so that was a definite choice and we also ordered the stir fried cashew with chilli paste. The portions are huge. I enjoyed both dishes but my boyfriend especially enjoyed the stir fry.<br/><br/>I did find that that the amount of chicken in the green curry was way less than the amount of chicken in the stir fry. Majority of the curry was vegetables and gravy. We brought this to our waiter's attention when we asked for our leftover food to be packed and he went to tell the staff in the kitchen. They had a whole debate about the amount of chicken that goes into each dish and then someone in the kitchen said 'they are mad' in either Zulu or Ndebele. Firstly, that is not how you treat your customers and secondly, having lived in Zimbabwe all my life, I have a fair understanding of the language. All we asked is why the one dish had more chicken than the other.<br/><br/>The food was so delicious but my experience here has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm not sure if I would return!

Usually order takeaways from this little gem in greenside so I decided to have a sit down... <br/>Love their feel good lounge setup that's blended in with different shades of red and a tone down of greys and beautiful paintings on the walls giving it a relaxing aura.... <br/>Ordered one of their thai black bean lentil rice noodle dish which lived up to expectations.. I must say its been a while since i thoroughly enjoyed a noodle bowl like I did today... <br/>Service was prompt <br/>Will certainly be back for more😋😝

This is my favorite healthy takeaway meal to get. Service is quick, food is tasty and delicious.<br/>Prices are a bit high for the portions, but I’ll let it slip for the quality of the food.<br/><br/>Definitely a must if you like Thai food 👌🏼
Steph Glover
I had an absolutely incredible lunch here. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. She recommended the hotness and proteins for each dish. A word of caution: the food is hot! I would normally order hot food, but I opted for medium to be safe and it was pretty spicy. We had the Ba Me Prik Phao with chicken (seriously amazing) and Phad Mee Leung with beef. I can’t wait to come back as soon as possible.

Really awesome spot with great food and atmosphere <br/>The service was good and all around wonderful place <br/>The S&S crispy duck is eat your fingers off good <br/>Well done team Thai Cafe 🤘
Joseph Emmanuel Raphael Passchier
Have only had deliveries from here.<br/>Excellent food for an excellent price. <br/>Veg spring rolls: Good<br/>Chicken Phad Mee Leung: Amazing <br/><br/>Tip: If you want to save money whilst ordering from them, rather ring the restaurant directly than order off uber eats.

Lunching at Thai Cafe this afternoon ; We enjoyed the Crispy Duck and Red Duck Curry .<br/>Both dishes were equally good and tasty, we absolutely enjoyed it . <br/>The service was awesome ! <br/>Great find on a lazy Sunday afternoon..<br/>

Delicious Thai food, well made with quality ingredients. What an absolute find ! We love eating there and the staff are friendly and helpful. While the decor isn't fabulous, it is certainly fine. Would recommend this for eat-in or takeaway.

I am addicted to the crispy duck. Never disappoints. I usually get a take away but the service is always quick, friendly. ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️

Best fast and friendly Thai in Joburg, hands down! The service is fast and efficient and the food is just spot on every time in terms of flavour, portion size and presentation :)
Laura Byrne
Cheerful, cafe-style ambience makes Thai Cafe look cheaper and less high-quality than it is, but adds a slightly quirky, fun note to the atmosphere. The service is friendly and quick, and the food delicious! Nothing that I haven't seen on other Thai menus but done well and they creatively offer a non-tofu, vegetarian offer which was much appreciated. Caution: hot really means hot!
KarmaZebra
Tummy Tingling Thai Tastiness! This cosy Cafe has become my "delicious-and-nutritious go-to"! Whether it's a lazy weekend take-away or a quick casual weekday sit down, I always leave with a happy face & belly - just like the Buddha on the menu!! <br/>I love watching the spectacular flames in the kitchen as the food is freshly chopped & prepared and always admire the generous portions of vibrant veggies, fresh chilli and lashings of creamy coconut milk. (Warning...the Thai style chili is not for the faint-hearted!!) They also offer a HUGE assortment of meat free options and don't charge any extra for Tofu (as they do for meat, chicken and fish). <br/>My only (minor) criticism... is that the food and service is slightly inconsistent depending on how busy they are, but the staff are certainly open to suggestions and try to improve all the time!

I absolutely love Thai food and I was suitably impressed with Thai Cafe's menu as well as taste and quality. We had wontons for starters, packed with flavour and for mains, we tried a curry as well as a noodle dish- both superb.

DELIVERY COSTS ISSUE.<br/><br/>The food is good and I have spent long afternoons there, at some cost. Ordered a takeaway delivery tonight to find out they charge R10 per Kilometer for delivering,  This is not apparent anywhere on their websites as I see nor was I informed by the restaurant.  So a R100 meal cost me 50% more.  Not big stuff. Really. Except that I would normally give the driver a good tip for delivery, not to the restaurant as charged for delivery on the  invoice and my credit card transaction - which included the delivery charge.  There is no such thing as 'free' delivery, costs remain and need to be recovered for this service, I accept that. But given other free delivery options I do need to ask Thai Cafe the following:<br/><br/>1. For the measly amount I paid for delivery, on the restaurant account, how much is passed on to the driver?  The full amount or just a bit?<br/>2. R10 per kilometer is rich, more than Uber charges for a ride in a sedan, and this service delivered by a motor cycle?<br/>3. Regularly delivery drivers are tipped. I gave mine cash tonight as a tip, so I have paid twice for the service, just as a note.<br/><br/>I hope Thai Group responds, if this is the practice across the group.

Mar 11 dinner: Nice place in Greenside. The interiors is a mix of white walls, red sofas and green plants - quite comfy as compared to the cold weather outside. The tables seemed to be a bit small in size. We started with veg and chicken spring rolls. The rolls were good and the fillings were tasty. Further, the rolls were not too oily. For mains, we had thai c urry with steamed rice and egg fried rice. The food is really good. The service was good as well. Nice place for Thai food.

Never disappoints. Chefs special prawn is delicious. Caution however, hot is extremely hot. Recommend medium for the right balance of spice and flavor. Pad thai is tasty with a god amount of prawn. Great casual dining.
Jayde
A casual spot with friendly staff and delicious Thai curries. My only critique would be more veggies in the curries but you could easily look past that when you're gobbling down those lovely flavours.
Tetpsy
Really good food, the Ba me prik, crispy duck and masamum curry are out of this world.. a little bit pricey for drinks, but very good food and waiters are polite

My cousin and I were looking for a cute relaxed spot to have an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon and we bumped into Thai Cafe. My cousins had never had Thai food before so we decided to try Thai Cafe. It's such a cute little spot, not overcrowded which we liked. The food was so tasty, and the flavours for the meals we had were so complimentary. I really enjoyed this experience, and the waiters were so friendly too. Will surely come back ❤

Usually when a restaurant is completely empty, I second think visiting it. Nonetheless, we came here because we reeeally wanted Thai food. The service was great, our food came on time and it was amazing!!! Thank you for an awesome experience.<br/><br/>________________________________________________<br/><br/>2 months later ....<br/>Ordered takeaways through UberEats. I am disappointed. Ordered the sweet and sour chicken. The rice was stale, the meat and sauce was way too sweet.

We were recommended Thai Cafe by a friend and it was the best Thai we've had in a very long time! My husbands comments were "this really makes me think of being in Thailand again" well done for the authentic flavours! A really awesome thai meal! I can certainly recommend to anyone. And bonus that they delivered to us with no problems in melville! Well done guys! Super meal!

Ordered the thai green curry with tofu (medium spicy-ness) which is my favourite so far! I love the amount of chilli, the combination of flavours and the taste of each ingredient, especially with the rice. We also had the Thai black bean noodles, which was great too, but I found the flavour not as spectacular. The service was great and the restaurant itself is beautiful.

Greenside is always a great vibe and chilled out place to be, any day of the week. I really loved the food here, the sit down area is small yet comfortable. Downside there's no bathroom in the place.<br/><br/>Service is good and food is made fresh and you can see into the kitchen for more peace of mind.<br/><br/>I had the noodle prawn pad thai. Will definitely go back. <br/>
Sofia Kouridis
The sweetest place! Warm service, a complementary bowl of prawn crackers, and really nice food! The only thing I can complain about is how dodgy the upstairs looks on the way to the bathroom. Yikes.
Susannah Fox
Delicious food. Peaceful setting. Good service. My daughter visiting from Klerksdorp requested authentic Thai food & that's what we got. No surprises or disappointments. Portions just right. I feel like I should say more about the vibe / decor / ambiance/ etc - but all was 100% good for an early Sunday lunch.

For any Capetonians in the city trying to have a taste from home. DON'T GO TO THAI CAFE! The one here is really nothing like the one in Cape Town. Nothing.<br/>And the staff is quite rude. <br/>
Jenny Louw
The first time I ate here I absolutely hated it. Since then I have discovered that green curry is simply just not my thing. I do wish the staff were a little more knowledgable about the cuisine. <br/><br/>I've since returned a couple times and though I'm not obsessed with this Thai Cafe I enjoyed it much more than the first time. Favourites would be their veg Spring rolls and the Khao Pad. The sticky rice with lychees just isn't for me. <br/><br/><br/>
Paul Scott
Cheap and cheerful Thai franchise. Not much atmosphere but the food is pretty decent. They have a full bar and wall plugs at the tables in case you need to whip out a laptop.
Hasina Gori
Best Thai Food. The food has me dreaming of humid Thailand evenings. <br/><br/>The Phad Thai and the Chef special is usually my go-to. Be careful the HOT is spicy - so if thats not your thing rather bring it down a notch, <br/><br/>The Sticky Rice Pudding is decadent. <br/><br/>Sit down has a nice feel to it but usually order takeouts. (Have been known to eat this with my hands on hotel balconies.) <br/><br/>The portions are generous so you get to savour the dishes with a little to take home with
Jolene
I don't eat Thai food often, but sometimes I do get the craving. I've only been here once and probably won't rush back anytime soon.<br/><br/>I played it safe and ordered a stir fry because I did not know the restaurant or anyone who has been here before. My stir fry arrived quite cold and wasn't tasty at all. It kinda tasted like one of those stir fry packs you'll expect a student to make.<br/><br/>Was a little disappointed that this little Thai place didn't become my go-to Thai spot, but at least the decor inside is really cool!
Lidija Damjanović
Restaurant is quaint and a pleasure to sit in. Cute decor. The food is fairly well-priced and very delicious. However, the service was subpar and slow. <br/>Other than that, definitely recommend.
Francesca Favero
I am a huge fan of the Thai Cafe in  Claremont, (in Cape Town), but sadly there does not seem to be much consistency between branches, both with spice range (a medium at this branch is more like a hot at the branch  in CPT) as well as with general flavour. Was really expecting more consistency. That said, our takeway order was made promptly and the food was not bad, per se, just not up to the standard I had come to expect
Ashley
Reasonably priced Thai food that packs a punch on the vibey Greenside strip.<br/><br/>Highly recommend the Crispy Duck, it's exceptional! <br/> <br/>Visit if: Well you are in the mood for Thai food obviously, and want a generous weeknight meal that won't break the bank or a pre-night out on the town meal.
Nishant Maingi
Good food. Good place. Can sit outside. Service is good as well. <br/><br/>Most imp - kitchen is open throughout the day, unlike some places which close in the afternoon. Means, yiu can go at any time of day
FoodiewhippedSA
the food was amazing , it was authentic Thai Food.  The food portions were amazing very generous. I enjoyed the noodles with chicken, whereas my wife enjoyed the prawn noodles, the dinning areas was very cosy and just perfect for Sunday getaway for an awesome meal. The service was quick and efficient. An amazing place if you a lover of Thai food.
Mandy-Lou Parnall
A quiet Monday at the Thai Cafe. Tough chicken satay and watery massaman curry served with incorrect accompaniment. Average service and tasteless tea. But super company.
Stacey C
Cannot fault a single thing. This meal was perfection! The food came quickly and it was delicious! <br/><br/>We had the crispy sweet and sour duck and the ba mi prik phao. Both were fantastic and recommended. We also finished the meal with chocolate spring rolls and ice cream. Unbelievable meal!
De Villiers Fouche
Hey! You should learn to answer your phone. It's pathetic to consider a restaurant isn't answering. I know it is the correct contact number, as I have ordered many times before. Simply Asia answers their phones, so I'll give them a ring.
Jaynisha Patel
I am such a fan of Thai Cafè in Cape Town so I was really excited to try it here in Greenside. We opted for take outs although the dining area is quite nice. The service was friendly and helpful. I love this franchise because they have so many options for vegetarians which is sometimes a rare find. <br/><br/>My favourite dish is the stir fried noodles with cashew and chilli paste. You can you have it with rice instead of noodles, and pick your protein (tofu for vegetarians). My sister loves their black bean noodle dish, which I must agree is delicious. The portion sizes are generous. <br/><br/>Overall, great flavoursome Thai food made with a protein of your choice. I would recommend giving them a try if you're looking for a quick Thai bite or some take outs
Grant & Sam
A cold night led to a Thai food craving, and we decided to check out Thai Cafe due to the good reviews. <br/><br/>We started with the fried wonton, which were over-fried leading to bitterness around the edges, with a filling that was surprisingly tasteless. <br/><br/>The red curry with seafood was overall a good dish; however rubbery calamari rings detracted from the dish. The Ba Me Prik Bao was decent, if too wet for a stir-fry; the beef was a bad choice, as many of the pieces were fatty and chewy. <br/><br/>Service was largely absent. The headache-inducing bass noise from what one assumes is a bar in the neighbourhood ensures that you won't linger. We can see why the place is so popular for deliveries and takeaways.
Alice Richter
Deeeeeelicious coconut soup & veggie spring rolls. <br/><br/>Fast service and fooood with just enough kick to it! definitely not my last meal at Thai Cafe 😍👍🏻<br/>
John Taylor
My girlfriend and I shared a wonderful meal at Thai Cafe on a Sunday afternoon recently. Excellent spring rolls and a stunning seafood pad thai. Great service too!
Lana Lovasic
So I gave this place another try after a mixed experience. I will say the food tastes fresh and is affordable but some dishes are def better than others, and some are faaaar from authentic. <br/><br/>I have to disclose here, Pad Thai is my fav thai dish. Authentic pad thai is sweet and salty (fish saucey) but also always has peanuts, bean sprouts and egg in it. This one had none of these things nor any other classic pad thai flavour). I thought maybe they mixed up my order before but now I have confirmed that this is what they consider pad thai. This is very disappointing as this place is on my way home and convenient for takeaways.  Still good for students who want a fresh hot meal for cheap though.
ROBERT ELLIS
The 4 of us wanted some takeaway and so we ordered Thai and it was delivered to our door within 35mins. Not only that, but the food was great, we had 3 pad thai's and you can never go wrong with that, fresh noodles! And I had the Ba Me Prik Phao which I highly recommend to everyone, a bit noodles and cashews in a chili paste that was so good and tasty. Was very happy all round with the healthy meal
Lucia Mgqamqo
The most amazing Red Curry I have ever tasted in my life. An explosion of fresh flavours. I would definitely go back again and again. #somuchhappiness
Samrandy
Fantastic food. Decent size portions and nice and healthy too. They didn't have duck which was disappointing but apparently they were very busy earlier in the day. Next time I would be keen to try the duck.
Tamlyn Arnold
Absolutely delicious Tom Yum soup! And very crispy crispy duck! The restaurant is quaint and nicely decorated. Service was friendly and quick! I'd go back in a heartbeat!
Leon Von Moltke
The service is absolutely appalling. An hour and a half later waiting for deliveries, we have given up. Six calls to the store, numerous calls to the driver, no joy. I will never order there again.
Sharna Berelowitz
Love this restaurant! Food is delicious. If you like spivey food the this is the place to go! Service is very quick and efficient. Waiters are able to explain dishes in detail.
Ashton Mountfort
So disappointed. After a long day I craved what I used to love, some Thai cafe. I called in for a delivery and was told 40 minutes. After 50 minutes I called in and asked where my order was. I was informed it was around the corner. After 60 minutes I called to cancel as by now I was starving and angry and he was definitely not around the corner as I was as waiting outside for the last 15 minutes so as not to miss him. The driver called me 70 minutes after my order was placed to say he is here and before I could answer him he hung up in my ear. I tried to explain and he hung up again.
Carien Jakovljevic
I ordered some take away Chicken pad thai (mild) on Friday eve, and it was really really yummy. The wait was extremely quick also. The pad thai had the exact right amount of spice and flavour, and good ratio of ingredients. They don't get a 5 because I got half a lemon in my food instead of a lime, and I would have liked some more peanuts, but all in all better pad thai than any of the expensive Thai restaurants I have ever been in Jhb.
Tshidi Khunou
Today was one of those days when I actually wanted some Thai food so badly. We drove all the way from Morningside to Greenside. The service was great. Ishmael was our waiter. The food was also just as amazing. Atleast I didn't feel guilty after eating all that ordered. Great place, great location. I will go back again.
Andrew Chen
I had heard about this place from friends so I was keen to try their food. But when I went for lunch the food was average at best and over priced. The flavour was good but the cashew chicken was made using ingredients that didn't look fresh and it only came with 2 cashews! The service was not good and left me in an unpleasant mood by the end of my meal.
Jolene-Ann Roberts
I have been a loyal customer for about 8 months now. I go to this restaurant twice a week and my friend and I used to absolutely love this place. Unfortunately last few times I have been there have been very disappointing but last night was absolutely the last straw. The waitress had to be reminded twice to bring my tea, our starters came before my tea and then I had asked for my meal to be medium as always and it came so hot that I could not eat it when I told the waitress she first argued then reluctantly agreed to make me a new one. The new meal came with no spice. When I asked her she said the previous one was medium and now had to add my own spice.<br/><br/>Very disappointing and frustrating. I would understand if this was the first time I am experiencing this but unfortunately the bad service and attitude in general out weighs the great food.
Nadine Franks
Really authentic yummy Thai food! It really never disappoints.. Great service as well.. I would definitely recommend the Khao soi Chang mai it is out of this world just be sure to order extra mild if u have a low heat tolerance..
Kylie Rossouw
Favourite place to eat a quick meal. In love with the curry's. The crispy duck is out of this world. Keep it up! Really is a hidden gem.....
Ilan Ben-David
One of the only chains of Thai food restaurants that is authentically thai, made virtually exactly the same as you would find on the streets of Thailand. the Massaman curry is an absolute winner! Although the service, at times, has room for improvement.
Pictor
Surprisingly good. Nice layout with comfortable seating. More suited for an afternoon meal than dinner. Service was slow but it was a public holiday with reduced staff. Tried the veg and chicken spring rolls and both were almost identical with minimal amounts of meat in the chicken spring rolls. A bit on the bland side. The stir fries for mains were excellent. Lots of flavour with nice crunchy vegetables. I went for the hot option and it wasn't too spicy. I would recommend having rice rather than noodles to get the maximum flavour from the sauce in the stir fries.
Lauras World
This restaurant really is a little hidden gem for fresh Thai food! Both the downstairs and upstairs sections of the interiors are colourful and beautifully bright. Thai Cafe have branches in Thailand itself and many in South Africa: Hout bay, Steenberg, Claremont, Stellenbosch, Seaport, Crawford, Rondebosch, Cradlestone and last but not least Greenside!<br/><br/>The food on offer is healthy, fresh and really delicious! Its not often that I look forward to a healthy meal but their food really is just that good!<br/><br/>*Recommendation: Tom Yum hot & sour soup filled with vegetables, coriander and lime leaves (with your choice of tofu, prawns, seafood or chicken) - delicious!
Nicolene Potgieter
We went for dinner yesterday evening. <br/>We ordered Vegetable spring rolls,Tom Kha, Suki Nu, Green Curry and for dessert we had the mini chocolate spring-rolls.<br/>The food was good (dessert was boring, to echo previous reviewers, I don't think dessert is a big Thai thing) but the service was great! Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing.
Lucy Lightfoot
Having eaten here many times last night I was decidedly disappointed with my meal. As a suggestion it might be worth considering improving the selection of wines. There are so many good SA wines at all price ranges. Box wine doesn't have to be the cheapest option or the only wine served by the glass.
Theresa Offwood-le Roux
Had dinner here a couple of nights ago and I must say it was so yummy! Some of the best Thai food I've had in joburg! We shared the Phad Thai and the stir fry ginger with chicken. That Phad Thai was my favourite - I'll definitely go back to have that again. We ordered both mild but the stir fry was much spicier than the Phad Thai, which is a little strange. Then we shared the sticky rice with lychee dessert - that was not too great but I don't think Thai is known for their desserts. Should have gone the starter and main route :). It's a small restaurant that does takeaway as well - so it doesn't have much of a vibe. And it was very empty when we were there, which is a pity. But prices are good and good was delicious. I'd definitely recommend it!

We were two couples meeting at the Thai Cafe in Greenside for lunch. It was a dry winter day and were sitting on the deck outside looking out over Greenway. The sun was bright and hot, but there was an umbrella for shade. We had to wear our shades though because of the glare. We enjoyed the meal. Which was authentic Thai, and were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable tab. There was a good selection of dishes to choose from and we each found something to our liking. Everyone at the table were satisfied with their choice in the end. I would recommend to go later in the day, perhaps at dusk or after dark, than to go midday like we did.
Neel 'Nino' Roshania
Not bad. Relaxed vibe. Need to bring your own shesha. Not sure if R25 a black label is fairly priced. The manager just picked up my wallet and gave it back to me, so yay for good service.

Really love this place for thai food. Better quality, more veggies and tastes fresher than their counter part simply asia. I have been pleased with all the meals. Great for take always and chilled dining.

The food is so damn delicious! We went and ordered a couple of meals for the table and I can honestly say every dish was so full of flavour and yummy. It is also very well priced. Just be warned The medium is hot so I can only imagine how hot Thai Style would be.

Ordered for delivery the other night. Took a bit time to make an account for me and to order to the food BUT they were very quick in delivering, the food was good (not great but really reasonable for the price as well). Veggie spring rolls were not too much my taste and the tofu in the vegetarian dishes was a bit gummy. But overall great value for money and definitely a recommendation. Thumbs up!

By far, my favourite Thai restaurant in Jozi. The food is always delicious and the service great. I've been there on a few occasions and am always looking for an excuse to go back! The jam jars (cocktails) from the bar upstairs are also worth a mention.

I ordered take out from this place and went to collect it. The restaurant is absolutely stunning. The food arrived quickly even though it was lunch time. Warning: Thai style hot may be way to hot to handle for the average person.

Never disappoints!!!! Food is always fresh and delicious. Mouth watering and eye catchy. Highly recommend the Thai curries. Great, friendly service when you sit down and you get quick great service through delivery. Truly one of my favorites.

We are regulars of the Thai cafe in Greenside. Take away, not eat there. I love Thai food, but the Thai cafe green curry chicken hits the spot every time. I sometimes think the hot is too hot, but the mild just does not do it. My hubby prefers the prawn red curry. So we take turns. The egg fried rice is just everything. So when the Thai craving strikes, this is the place.

Finding a Thai restaurant is difficult in South Africa, and finding one that taste good is basically mission impossible!! <br/><br/>I've had food here several times and decided to bring my family through to try it out. As per usual the food was fabulous, but my god the service was beyond horrendous and it was a quiet day too!! <br/><br/>We waved at the waiter several times to order our food, but he just ignored us and went to serve the 2 other table that came after us. Eventually after 15 minutes I went up to the counter and ordered from another waiter who was just sitting there. We requested for a sharing bowl, by the time it got to us, we were basically done with our meal. <br/><br/>At the end of our meal, when we asked for the bill, again nothing happened for 10 minutes and My mom went up to the counter to find him and the other waiter having a fat chat!! I tipped him less because I refuse to pay for such shitty service and he argued he was there the whole time and he did serve us.<br/><br/>I hope that Thai cafe will better educate their staff and teach them the difference between bringing our food and bringing good service to the table

This is a little gem in Greenside, which serves tasty and good value Thai food. Was very busy when we were there and patrons a bit close for comfort so does lack the dining experience that some would like , it is a cafe and take away so can't complain , like the way the menu is laid out made easy for the Thai food beginner. Should do well as a roll out franchise , taste holdings or famous brands should take a look.

A lovely viby little place with a great atmosphere and delicious food! We had a wonderful time, the only announce was due to the tables being so on top of each other you land up feeling like you sitting on the tables next to yours lap and hearing their every word! But food is fantastic!!

Thai Café is one of my best restaurants in Joburg both for sit down and take-away. The staff are so friendly and cheerful, service is always quick and efficient, and the food - delicious, fresh and authentic! I enjoyed another dinner there on Friday. My recommendations are the Penang chicken (I always take mild as my spicy limit is quite low), the spring rolls, the crispy duck and the chicken salad with glass noodles! All fresh, aromatic and so reasonably priced. The restaurant itself is quite small and fills up fast, so I recommend making a booking especially if you are a large group of people.

Thai Cafe is a small, affordable, simple restaurant tucked in Greenside's restaurant row. We had a large group and they were very accomodating, quick to push together tables and serve us. Our food was great and came in four levels of spice (mild, medium, hot, and thai style). I got the red curry as hot and it absolutely destroyed me--luckily, the service was good enough that water was readily available. Best of all, free delivery!

When Thai Cafe first opened it was great: authentic flavours and generous portions. Then the portions shrank and the dishes lacked lustre. Now the food appears to be back to the standards that first saw me visiting it at least once a month.<br/><br/>The service, however, remains pretty rubbish. It seems all the waiting staff serve every table rather than being assigned individual ones, which can mean having to ask for the same thing repeatedly or being asked repeatedly if you need something. It's the food alone that keeps me coming back. As long as you don't expect stellar service you won't be disappointed.

Terrible delivery service. Once made a mistake with our order and tonight took 2 hours to deliver even though we live 5 minutes down the road. Said they could provide a card machine but then later said they couldn't. Lady we spoke to was barely apologetic.

I love the fact that Thai Cafe delivers! Really reasonable delivery charges as well. I ordered the chicken spring rolls and the green curry with prawns.. Both were really tasty and it's safe to say that I'm super impressed with this place 👌 I will definitely order from here again & maybe even pop in for a meal

I've never had a disappointing meal at this vibey little restaurant. The decor is fresh and fun with a lovely wall garden. The service is fast and effecient but the staff are not particularly cheerful or friendly. <br/>I've tried many of the noodle dishes and while all were lovely, I highly recommend the fat free glass noodles with beef or chicken, very tasty but not heavy! BIG portions. <br/>The duck dishes are a serious bargain. Very affordable for duck and absolutely delicious- especially the sweet and sour crispy duck breast!

This Thai place is actually great. I have been lucky enough to visit Thailand, so when it comes to authenticity, this place does not disappoint. Their food is very well prepared and the service is good. If you are going in a big group I suggest you all order something different to try a bit of everything. Definitely try the chocolate springrolls.

I love kitchens that close late! Who knows when one will want spontaneous late dinner.<br/><br/>Thai Cafe is a great thai restuarant. Many raved about it so I had to see what my fellow foodies were going on about. And yeah, pretty good thai place.<br/><br/>We ordered the platter for 2 to share. I often judge places by their chicken satays, they're often dry and chewy. This was beautifully soft and the peanut sauce was incredible, very nutty and you could see it was made from real nuts :) it really is a special sauce (as said on the menu).<br/><br/>Their beef Massaman curry is delicious. Beef was quite chewy, so I gave that a miss and had the sauce, rice and veggies. Ain't nobody got time to chew all day! <br/><br/>Their sticky rice pudding with lychee is said to be even better than ones found in Thailand. It was good. At first it seems ordinary and soon sneaks up on you with its unassuming wonderful flavours. The sesame seeds make it for me. I could have done with a few more sprinkles of that!

My favourite restaurant in Greenside. The decor is amazing and definitely gives a Thai feeling and an actual look into the Thai way if life. The food on the other hand is even greater than the decor! It is simply amazing! My favourite meals would be spring rolls to start with (obviously) then either the green curry, the phad thai or the stir fried cashews. This is a must go to place!

After visiting Thailand, it becomes difficult to find a local restaurant that can take you back to that amazing holiday in Thailand. Thai Cafe, to date, has been the closest restaurant in Jozi to do deliver on the experience. <br/><br/>Somewhat slow service aside, the food is full of flavour. Ordered their starters platter for two (which we easily shared amongst the four of us) which was good. I had their crispy duck which I fell in love with. Others had their curries and noodle dishes...which I tried and was equally yum. <br/><br/>Would definitely go back and try out their other dishes.

Amazing food served here! From what I could gather it is authentic thai. I really enjoyed ech dish I've had there and the variety that they offer.

Thai Cafe is a great find! The curries are delicious, but my word can we talk about their sticky rice? It may be better than sticky rice in Thailand! Definitely a favourite on the Greenside strip!

Our favorite once a week eat out treat. The Choo Chee Gai is a firm favourite and the coconut tart is divine and the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Be warned once you taste the food you'll be sure to come back. Awesome food, awesome service, awesome people!
