Review Bgr - Johannesburg

Shannon de Jongh
Staff were wonderful šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼. Burgers were good. Fries were what they were. Milkshakes mediocre, more on the runny side, expected a bit more for R60. Overall I'd give the food a 6.7/10.

BGR is a contender. Don't get me wrong, it's not the kind of place you'd go for a photoshoot. It's plain, not much to look at, and you probably won't find it popping up on your Instagram feed anytime soon. But, if you're after a seriously good burger, then this joint has got you covered. They've narrowed their focus down to basically just burgers - and that's their strength. They do burgers, and they do them really well. It's like they've taken all the frills and fluff you'd find at fancier spots like Big Mouth, Salvation Caffe, or Pablo House, stripped it all away and put everything into making a top-notch burger. But the best part? Your wallet's going to love this place. Prices at BGR are a lot easier on the pocket than those other places, but the quality? Still up there with the best. So if you're after a great burger without all the bells and whistles, BGR is worth a visit. It might not be the prettiest, but it sure does deliver when it comes to taste.

Amazing burgers šŸ”, very good quality food. Great service. The restaurant is clean and well run. Highly recommended. I tried to give the cashier a tip but she said they are not allowed to accept tips which is weird and disappointing as the staff deserve tips for their great service.
Khumo Markham
The most amazing service. Staff letā€™s you taste drink options if youā€™re indecisive. The burgers had me salivating, and they taste even better than they look.
Kylie Fisher
Your staff is incredible! Customer service is superb. The burgers are good however I wished you used a cheese that melts properly onto the patty itā€™s always half melted. The lager on tap great! Otherwise it was lovely.
Michaela Faith Davids
My favourite burger in Johannesburg! No fuss no frills just burger - I love it. The place is not super fancy but enough to enjoy your food. The service is great. I find lunch time to be a better time to ā€œdine inā€ as opposed to dinner.
Li-Chi Pan
Found a slice of 'In n' Out' at BGR, South Africa. Best burgers in Jo'Brug hands down. Beef patties are super fresh (not frozen) and they have a free of charge lemonade refill system which I love! Highly recommend

Best burgers šŸ” I have ever tasted in SA šŸ‡æšŸ‡¦. The most friendly and kind staff and a funky place to dine. 5 star šŸŒŸ šŸŒŸ šŸŒŸ šŸŒŸ šŸŒŸ for the double cheese burger
Spi Triple-Seven
See why I say this is probably the best burger joint in town. Check out my review on Zomato @pilot_foodie94 or you can search BGR rosebank on the app or website

After wandering in to a fairly industrial looking space with cold lighting and concrete floors, the friendly staff make it feel warm. This is by no means fast food, but if you have a little while to wait, do. The burger was a little oily, but incredibly tasty - the fries were fairly standard fare. Chocolate milkshake is fantastic and the inclusion of home-made lemonade and iced tea, and a craft beer on tap was very welcome. The menu structure is simple and easy: R65 for a cheese burger, R85 for a double (I think without cheese it was R5 cheaper) - burger price remains fixed whether you have all the toppings or none at all - with the exception of bacon, which is R25 extra. In summary, strange space with great staff, slow but wonderful and simple food and drink. Iā€™ll definitely be back.

Super friendly and helpful staff, I enjoyed the burgers. A great variety for bottomless alcohol free beverages. You can also get a scoop of ice cream & freshly squeezed lemonade. The fries are sold separately. Nice joint.

They have a very simple menu and a simple restaurant layout, but it works! Their claim to fame is using the freshest beef and just adding salt for their patties. Their burgers are simple, but tastes great, juicy, and just awesome!
David Taylor
One of the coolest burger spots around. Keeping it simple and uncomplicated means there's no room to hide a substandard offering. A little on the pricier side, but so good!
Meglin Maistry
We ordered the cheese burgers with bacon and friesā€¦packaging and quality was really good Next time we will order dipping sauces then it will be 5/5
Michael Djvoodoosa Darcio
The waffle style chips is a unique and nice touch. The burger itself is decent but could honestly be a touch tastier. More spice/salt. The atmosphere could be more viber, perhaps some cool music? The layout is a tad hidden hidden, the view from the front benches makes it tough for me to see the elevated front of the store unless I walk right up the stairs.

So I think it's great you have a vegan burger, but I can't understand why you would even have a vegan burger with a bun that's made with egg and dairy. It's like wearing socks over your shoes.

I was told that the burgers were out of this world at eatBGR. Now I am a burger and pizza snob (I confess), and thought I had to try this burger. What a disappointment! Very different from your typical gourmet burgers. This is like a home made burger - plain simple which is not a bad thing but the overall burger itself (cheese burger with the works) was very average. The best part was the waffle fries. My ultimate burger search continues - this was not it.
Lauren Reddy-Gebers
BGR is one of our favorite burger joints in JHB. We always rant about the quality and taste of the burgers. But we are super disappointed today as the cheese burger patty we ordered was so small we hardly tasted any meat. There was more lettuce on our burgers. We basically paid R65 for lettuce and a bun with a hint of patty. Also what happened to the waffle fries?
Garth James
Very poor in service and quality of food. Small and had pink inside the patty which means it is all frozen and then de-frosted on the griddle. I can see why it is BGR and not Burger . . because it is NOT a burger.
Venetia Connors
Best Burgers in JHB! Don't like the new waffle chips :( the previous chips were amazing. However, still the best burgers and lemonade that's taste exactly like good ol USA lemonade! Its the best!
Kgomotso Nelly Molosiwa
Went and tried the cheeseburger with my hubby yesterday. We have found the best burger in SA! It was amazing. We could not stop ohh and aaaaah while we were eating it. This is a slightly better version of shake shack. Will definitely be back with friends too. Well done Josh you were right. It's a really great burger !

I would give them 5 stars cause they burgers are awesome, I had the double cheese with bacon and it was divine, they chips small portion was generous, I even double checked my slip to see if I didn't make a mistake and ordered a large, lol...but I must say when I looked further down on my slip and saw I had bought a milkshake for R50 I was shocked and further more disappointed when it was in a small cup and didn't taste as great as the price tag would suggest. To not end on a bad note of one of the best burgers iv ever had, they did give me a small cup of vanilla ice cream which suggested that I should try the vanilla milkshake next time because maybe the chocolate one wasn't aligned with my taste buds. So next time I go I will do just that. Thanx BGR but what does BGR stand for ? Burgers Grilled Right ? BurGeR ? Lol
Bianca Buys
AMAZING burgers.. best I've had in ages. My fav is the double cheese "cardio" burger with "the works".. and to top it off... the best service you'll get anywhere
Rebecca Lydia Kemp
Best burgers in JHB for sure! I'm a burger snob and I was so homesick for a good American style burger. I can't wait to be back. Frozen custard is amazing as well!

Thank you BGR for the great food and service last night! You guys have never disappointed and each meal is amazing. But most importantly please thank your staff. I love coming to you guys, because of them. They are always friendly, smiling and happy smile emoticon Which is a great way to end one's day. So keep up the great service and the amazing food! #eatBGR #BGRFoodie

Took forever to find, please put up some signs! Otherwise it looks like just a caltex garage. Great experience though - great food and awesome concept. Staff were so friendly! Will be back fo' sho.

Love the Burgers and the Chips ...... best of all is the Lemonade ... Service with a Smile. Second time there and will definitely return <3 <3
Ayesha Matwadia
The chocolate milkshake is kickass. It was silky smooth and had a delicious chocolatey flavor. However I've had the herb loaded burger twice now and on both occasions I found it really dry.
The Schoeman Brothers
BGR is an awesome place to eat at and their burgers are so tasty! Theyā€™re quite far from us but Iā€™ve eaten there many times. Their skinny fries are addictive, and even when you know you shouldnā€™t, you just wanna keep eating the fries. Their takeaways is great too, and weā€™ve sat at the place too, which has a happy and excited atmosphere and ambiance to it! Hope weā€™ll be back sometime soon!
HungryDiner2.0
Nice atmosphere and the burger was awesome. I ordered waffle fries but received normal fries without an explanation why. <br/><br/>The place took me a little back to ā€œFive Guysā€ minus the rustic fries. <br/><br/>Will be going back for those beef patties lovely spiced and portioned.
Don
Yummy burger and fries, and the lemonade makes a great beverage combo šŸ˜

Pretty decent burger. BGR sauce could be more original but otherwise it was good. <br/>Facilities are nice, yā€™all just need your own loo. Having to go outside, up the stairs & down the passage is a nuisance. <br/>Good food though!
Carl Fischer
Overrated and overpriced. First time order and i was disappointed. Ordered a seriously expensive burger expecting more than a mouth full and got a rave burger sized bite. Soz. Be better please.

Best burger spot in Joburg and probably the country! Not only is the quality of the food top notch but the people serving are the best - friendly, kind and generous. Would highly recommend.

So after not visiting the establishment in some time tonight I convinced my wife that we should grab a burger from here. Grabbed a takeaway having driven 22km just for a burger, in fact a total of 44km (there and back home), we got home to be overwhelmed by the amount of salt that was on the burger. We hardly tasted any of the sauces or anything else because thatā€™s how salty the burger was. Really disappointed, especially after all the effort I put in driving so far only to be offered the saltiest burger Iā€™ve ever tasted, WOW!!
Khulekani Zungu
I opted for the double cheeseburger with fries option. The vibe of the restaurant is great, and the ingredients were incredibly fresh and full of flavour. Unfortunately there were no mushrooms when I went there, but that did not deter the meal. The staff is friendly, the place is immaculate and the food is wonderful. Most definitely one of the best burgers Iā€™ve ever had.
Shikinah Alexander
Order was incorrect , re-did my order and was incorrect again , found a hair in my food. My food was cold. When they re-did my order they didnā€™t give me a fresh burger with a new bun , I was given the burger I bit in. Fries were hot and fresh and staff were friendly.
Chiara Louis
Rated my many I know as the best burger in Joburg, but my chips were soggy and cold and my bun didnā€™t taste fresh. Shame. Maybe next time, guys!
Sibusiso Radebe
Insanely overpriced. Very average burgers. The fries are okay. The whole experience is overrated and there are far better burger joints around joburg. Unimpressed

A Jozi take on a classic American diner, and oh it works. Best burger in town with quick service, warm buns and a very relaxed chilled atmosphere to enjoy it in!
Eat Like A King
A great burger spot, as far as burger spots go. Prices have increased significantly recently but itā€™s still somewhat reasonable. What I love most is the variety of toppings you can add at no additional cost ( x3 grilled onions x2 pepperdew and x1 mayo - favourite combo) They used to do these waffle fries like you can see in my image but now itā€™s just frozen fries - really nothing special about that. If Iā€™m honest, we often buy our burgers here and go to a different franchise to get hand cut chips on our way home. Another thing I love though, their heavenly frozen custard - such a treat!
Ornella Scarpellini
Been craving a good ol American style burger for ages. Decided to try BGR out and I was not disappointed! They don't do chicken which is a bummer as I don't eat beef burgers, but I gave it it a try. This is the only place that I'll ever eat a beef burger at. It was so good, decently priced and they are very generous with their portions. I really enjoyed the meal and will definitely be back!
Khwezi Ngcobo
This burger does what a burger should. Thereā€™s not too much going but itā€™s still a party in your mouth after each bite. It is a bit pricey for a burger but I donā€™t mind, itā€™s worth it.

I had been meaning to try this burger joint as i heard many reviews about it. its a lovely spot if you looking to chill out and have a conversation with someone over a good takeaway meal. <br/><br/>the burger is great - for R65 you get a cheese burger with the works which is what i ordered. i didnt feel heavy or bloat after the burger which tells me alot about the meat meaning that its good quality. the fries are amazing. 10/10 they are the only ones ive found to rival Mcdonalds. The portion of lemonade is very generous <br/><br/>The only thing is price - how everything has to be ordered seperately (ie burger doesnt come with fries) . Its more than a regular take away joint but it would make sense if i paid R80 for the combination of the two<br/><br/>Would definitely go back though ! great great burger

The Lost City of BGR<br/><br/>Although Iā€™m no gastronomic connoisseur or a culinary zealot, I would like to consider myself some kind of vexed enthusiast with a literal taste for the simple, well-constructed, but brilliantly delicious fare across all boards. Especially so with the street-sold or ā€œfast foodā€ variety. Those much needed edible doses of unhealthy purchased goodness we desperately need to get us through this complex and convoluted foxhole we call daily life. In recent times, I specifically obsess over the classic favourite we know as the ā€œburgerā€. Provided it has been prepared or produced with some care and quality. I am happy to report that I have found the motherload within this arena on the Northern side of Egoli. It is colloquially known as BGR.<br/><br/>In the words of the prophet, Anthony Bourdain: ā€œThere are many forces at play with a properly made burger.ā€ Iā€™ve had the privilege of sampling this form of food in many different shapes and sizes, in many different places all over. I have had the holy grail of burgers at In-N-Out in Los Angeles, and reasonably good burgers in Jerusalem, Lusaka, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Atlanta airport. Though, the closest I have come to the El dorado or Shangri-La, is hidden somewhere between Jan Smuts Avenue and Oxford Road in Rosebank. I would love to tell you exactly where it is, but I would probably have to kill you.<br/><br/>Nestled next to a quiet one-way with very little parking available, BGR is a single store operation that packs the punch that ten franchises couldnā€™t muster. The clean, industrial, and immensely minimal aesthetic immediately divulges the true purpose of your visit. For, cartoonish or sleek furniture, colourful mascots and iconography, would be the most futile and cheapening endeavour in this house that ground beef built. By the way, ā€œNever frozen, [100% rump steak] patties are hand-formed daily with only a dash of salt added while its cooking.ā€<br/><br/>The menu is simple. Burgers, fries, lemonade. Maybe a cup of frozen custard afterwards. The absolute best part of all this is, the burger is a ballistic missile of pure delectable greatness. It sounds ridiculous, but itā€™s truly ingenious. The burgers are available as a single and double hamburger or cheeseburger. Then, thereā€™s the bacon burger, and a vegetarian option. Toppings are straightforward, the usual stuff to build your own tasty creation with. But, all garnish are intensely fresh. Simply ordering your burger with ā€œthe worksā€ would move enough mountains in a single visit. The patty is flawlessly cooked with an immensely high quality ground meat. The cheese is melted over the patty while on the griddle. The finely constructed burger is finally handed over, and can be accompanied by a portion of high-grade fries. Iā€™m utterly starving now.<br/><br/>This subjective rant has made it clear that I will be visiting this fine establishment for many moons to come. It consistently provides the contentment seeked, and it effortlessly checks all the boxes. Like I said: simple, well-constructed, but brilliantly delicious fare. Go and have yours, before the mirage dissipates.

Best burger in Johannesburg!!!! Consistently great food thatā€™s always cooked to perfection. Portion sizes are spot on. Also, the bacon is insanely good. Iā€™d recommend finishing your meal off with some frozen custard.<br/><br/>Pity that most of their menu is ā€œcoming soonā€

This is an awesome little gem hidden in the side streets of Rosebank. Have to say I had the freshest burger ever there. Awesome place to be. Will definitely go back
Kos
Amazing burger other burger places wish to come close to this !!! Keep it up !!!!!!! 1000% I been in this game (burgers) for long no time in my life but nothing like this !!!!! They can go very far <br/>

I love burgers and this place serves good burgers. And the fries were CRISPYā¤ I love how you can choose your own toppings. Still deciding if it was worth all that waiting I did or maybe I just went on a bad day (First Thursdays)
GlennM
What a great place. Friendly staff, classy diner anesthetic, with a spacious yet inviting dining area. Classic hits and underground b sides from the likes of Tom Waits, Dylan, and Billy Joel play while you tuck into a seriously tasty burger. Meat patties are divine and if you get one accompanied by "the works" you'll truly be satisfied. Don't skip the fries or freshly squeezed lemon juice either. Great stuff.
Lizelle Brink
BGR makes a good old fashion burger, which is tasty too. You choose your burger, and then for R20 you can select up to 14 toppings/sauces. The bun is buttered on the inside (which now days is a rare find) and toasted.Ā  The burger is also wrapped up smartly so that itā€™s easy to hold an eat with minimum mess.
Lisa Lumley
Stopped here for a sneaky late night cheeseburger and was not disappointed!!! The burgers resemble the American Shake Shack cheeseburger! The concept is simple yet delicious!!! Unfortunately I was too excited for my burger that I didnā€™t snap a pic before indulging! This burger will definitely satisfy your burger craving and is a quick no fuss little spot in Rosebank.
Chad Miller
The burgers are good and the decor makes it feel like the perfect unpretentious burger bar...but the prices are a little too crazy, kinda takes away from the cool factor.
Greg N
It has a simple menu which is really great as you experience everything made fresh. It really is a great burger. Price wise, itā€™s worth the money.
Rohini Sawu
Donā€™t let the simple menu throw you off. Their burgers are awesome and the frozen custard is a treat to try. Quick and friendly service too!

The BGR was suggested by my partner and we decided to go yesterday (November 28th). It's in rosebank, which i absolutely love! i was a bit disappointed when we got there because i was expecting more of a restaurant-type setting, but it is a takeout kind of place, which is okay, too. <br/><br/>we were greeted by 2 lovely ladies, who were such a delight. and i noticed throughout my time there that the staff generally just looks happy to be there, which i found great. <br/><br/>the ordering process is pretty simple: you choose between a meat and vegetarian burger option and add extras/toppings (cheese, tomatoes, sauces etc) to your liking. i had a single cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeƱos (yum!) and the bgr sauce. i had fries on the side and a lemonade, which were each a separate cost. the box packaging as opposed to trays was a win for me, i found it pretty cool. i enjoyed my burger through and through, although i felt like i was robbed of some jalapeƱos. the lemonade tasted good, but not freshly squeezed as they claim (i'd still have it again). the fries were a downer for me. they were a bit dry and i had to dip them in tomato sauce with each bite. in addition to that, they cost R25, which i thought to be ridiculous overpricing. other than that, though, it was a great experience. i'd definitely go back for another burger.
Nicole Kruger
BGR the concept is simple and neat with two options beef or vegaterian patties. You have a choice of toppings and saucers to chooce from. They offer crispy American bacon and fries at an additional charge. They are made fresh to order which is awesome. <br/>We tried the Double Cheese Burger and Bunless Burger. The Burgers weren't that big and slightly dry and lacked flavour and the bacon was very hard. Chocolate milkshakes were good. <br/>The atmosphere and decor is really awesome, clean and minimal. They have a range of seating areas to choose from. The Burgers are very expensive for what you getting. šŸ”šŸ”šŸ”šŸ”
Sebastian.steib
An hour waiting time to receive a completely mixed up order. All burgers ordered had somehow the toppings but in an own creation not matching the order. For 60-80 rand for a burger should have more quality.
Kimson Chan
So, i discovered this place during my first thursday visits and i decided to give this place a try. I ordered the simple burger and fries. I liked the buzzer system as the wait would not frustrate me. Whereas for the burger itself, its pretty decent with its elements. The shoe string fries were similar to the Rocco Mammas.
Jarred Michael Bell
BGR is a great artisan burger outlet in the heart of Keyes Art Mile. The burgers are freshly prepared with quality ingredients and tasty chips. What's great is that you can choose from a succinct range of toppings. Definetly worth a visit for lunch or a quick dinner
Michelle Usher McCullagh
Absolutely amazing burger. Fluffy bun, meaty patty, fresh lettuce, omg the pickles!!! Fries were great, crispy and not oily. Love the fact that there's a bunless option too. The store was clean, I love that you can see the food being prepared. I live in Northriding and this was well worth the trip. More stores please!!!

I love burgers and I go around JHB trying to find my favorite one. BGR came highly recommended but was a little disappointing. <br/><br/>The vibe on a Sunday afternoon is non-existent, I could hear crickets chirping. <br/><br/>The menu is simple but that's the point. A good patty, a good bun and some basic toppings can go a long way when it's all excellent quality. <br/><br/>Unfortunately, the quality was average. Whilst better than McDonald's or some other chain's offers, I don't think the burger itself was that great. Similarly, the milkshakes, which prices are not justified, were average too. I'd definitely eat the burger again, but I wouldn't go there unless someone else wanted to. <br/><br/>The system is effectively self-service so it's up to you how things go... still, they got my order wrong so I wasn't thrilled.
PrinishaM šŸ’‹
We ordered a few burgers without being too creative with the toppings. Good portion size and tasty burgers. Nothing too spectacular. Downside was that they did not have any hot drinks but were allowed to order drinks from nearby restaurants.
Phindikelly
best burgers in Joburg and now that they have bacon i'm over the moon!!! the fries are drlicious and the homemade lemonade makes it the perfect paring šŸ™ŒšŸ½šŸ˜‹

BGR is a very simple American-styled burger joint in Rosebank. <br/><br/>Nestled between a snazzy sneaker shop and an artsy shop, the minimalistic interior makes it a very unassuming restaurant especially from the outside. <br/><br/>The service is good, efficient, and relatively quick. Although being a fast food place, the order process is very simple: you order at the counter (like you normally would at a fast food place), collect your food, and either grab a table there or take it home to eat. <br/><br/>We ordered a cheeseburger and a double cheeseburger, and how it works is: you choose your burger type and then the toppings are free (except for bacon, bacon is an added cost) and you can choose which toppings you would like to add. The buns they use seem to be a fresh brioche-like buns that are wonderfully soft and buttery with a slight sweetness to them. The burger patties are smash burger patties but with a minimally seasoned meatiness to them. The cheese is, well, the cheese is cheese that's melted on your burger patty. We also ordered fries and a lemonade. The fries only come in one size and are a combination of Mcdonald's fries and KFC fries on a good day. The lemonade was surprisingly refreshing with a tang to it which was rather enjoyable.<br/><br/>The minimally marked/unmarked packaging further adds to the simplicity of BGR. <br/><br/>Overall, BGR is a simple burger joint that's worth a visit if you're wanting fresh, simple burgers, and to be in and out of there relatively quickly.<br/>
Sharima Bramannan
Finally made it here and I was really impressed. If you look at how they made the burger patty, it's all fresh....meat made into a patty on the grill...no frozen stuff. And it results in the flavour being really goodšŸ‘ŒšŸ½
Ashley
After reading the hype around BGR and it's "best burger in Jozi" we had to make a mission to try it out. It most definitely did not disappoint. The restaurant it's self is unassuming, like any take away place it's about the food and the speed of delivery. <br/><br/>The burgers are what really set it apart though. The patties are juicy and soft (non of that rubbery crap) and the buns are light and fresh. You have the option of adding as many free toppings as you would like on top of your burger/cheese burger/double cheese burger). The chips are thin and salty. A burger with drinks and chips will set you back around R100, so it's not the cheapest "fast food" option out there but it is so worth it. Definitely my new favorite burger and if you haven't tried it yet be sure to head there as soon as possible.
Jan Van Zyl
For me, the BGR concept works amazing as the burgers they serve is basic, yet delightfully tasty and well made.<br/>Went for the double cheese without toppings to test how good these burgers really are, and I was not disappointed!<br/>With a range of basic (yet sufficient) toppings to choose from, a burger that suits every need can be built to satisfy your tastebuds<br/>Fries are also on point.<br/><br/>Safe to say this is one of the best burger joints that I've visited in Gauteng when it comes to taste and quality.Ā <br/><br/>Will definitely make a trip to BGR again!!
Kev0&#039;s Food Adventures!
BGR reminds me of the overseas "five guys" burger franchise, it's seems they've modeled bgr on the concept of choose your burger, then add free toppings, etc just like five guys, the decor is also very similar. The burger was very good, the meat was juicy and tasty, loaded up with all the toppings I could barely get it in my mouth! Fries were nice and crispy. The soft drinks was a bit flat though. The venue needed some work imo still felt a bit empty, almost as though they just opened ( which I think is the case) all in all I would def go back. Try the frozen custard!
Ravi Govender
Friends in the know reckon this is a "Shake Shack" clone...if so, good on em. Simple, tasty burgers that hit the spot. Definitely a go to place
Ryan Whittaker
This has to be one of the best burgers in Joburg! The burgers are always juicy and the toppings always fresh. Their frozen custard is also to die for!
Lara Kerbelker
Best burger in JHB. I don't like massive, over the top burgers with too many toppings so this is perfect. The chips are really good too.<br/><br/>Re the reviews that say it is pricey- it should not be compared to typical fast food burger joints. You are paying for quality of ingredients.<br/>
Kholiswa Mqina
I went to BGR with a group of friends after First Thursdays. This was my 2nd time coming since it moved from its previous store & I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. The burger was very bland & all the extra toppings I picked couldn't cover the taste up. I used to go very often before the store moved, but the move seems to be at its misfortune. However, they do have one of the best lemonades I've ever tasted & would definitely go back for one of those.
Tsepiso Mbali
Went to BGR after this months first Thursday's. It was very full so I expected good food. The burgers were tasteless. For that price I expected more. Had to rely on the fries to save my meal. The burger patty itself is dry and flavorless. Not sure if it was just my group and I that felt this way, maybe the burger patties have an acquired taste that none of us possessed. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon.
Khaya Van Der Mbebe
Tried this place for the first time and It was grand. The service is top notch and the food was just as good. I had a hamburger and cheeseburger with different toppings on each, washing it all down with some freshly squeezed lemonade. The burgers were fantastic, good portions and fresh toppings. I loved the lemonade. I'll defo be visiting again
NicBLAZE
WOWĀ <br/><br/>Okay so i decided to give BGR a try, I had to, after all this talk about them having the best burger in JHB i really just had to understand the hype .Ā <br/><br/>The first thing i noticed is that the waffle fries are gone which is sad, i would have loved to compare them to the crisscut fries at carls jnr but whatever. That's my first complaint alot of coming soon ot gone items on the menu.Ā <br/><br/>Another complaint is the milkshake, now i understand its being made by fresh yoghurt and its more than amazing but R50 for a small milkshake just doesn't make sense to me at all.Ā <br/><br/>Anyway on to the food. i decided to go for it all, the double cheese with everything. and fries .Ā <br/><br/>R300 later for 2 people i'm worried because that's the equivalent to 2 x share boxes at mcdonalds. i mean that's a lot of burgers and fries.<br/><br/>So is it worth it?Ā <br/><br/>Well.....Yes and No,Ā <br/><br/>If you are putting this into the gourmet burger league then yes the price isn't bad at all for all the extras you can put on, Ā and what you actually get at the end, Which is a delicious fresh burger. HOWEVER it wasn't mind blowing, the hot sauce and mayo and whatever all seem a bit bland, the burger itself might be the best prepared burger ever but it again seemed a bit boring. maybe a little herbs and spices? or some sauces with a bite?Ā <br/><br/>Now the problem with this is that even without a tangy , spicy sauce, or a spiced up patty this burger sits in my top 5 without a chance of ever dropping because it is thee most soft and fresh burger i've ever had. the bun was fresher than andre 3000 after a shower. and the ingredients used seemed to have been harvested just for my burger. When you bite into this burger its like biting into a cloud of happiness. everything perfect.Ā <br/><br/>The fries, OH MY GAWSH!!! its some of the best fries i've ever had. crispy outside, soft inside. salted to perfection and just awesome in all ways.Ā <br/><br/>Now yes its one of the best burgers in JHB but if you are like me that enjoys a habanero teriyaki sauce, or avo and feta with spicy salsa or something crazy that's going to make my tastebuds explode then Ā you might not find what you looking for at this place.Ā <br/><br/>But if you are looking for the reincarnation of the original burger then this is it, it is simple it is everything a cheeseburger is supposed to be. its is tasty and fresh.Ā <br/><br/>And it feels as if i'm a kid watching spongebob all those people going crazy for the Krabby patty and always wanting to try the best burger. well BGR is as close to that as i have gotten.Ā <br/><br/>all i want now is more options and then there will be no questions about its.

Amazing waffle chips and the cheese burger with the worx was awesome. Chocolate shake is pricey but worth it. Definitely worth a visit......

Wow!!!<br/>We went there after work. Ordered the double cheese burgers. The food is great as well the fries.<br/>My husband enjoyed the lemonade and me I fell in love with the chocolate custard. Oh my my...<br/>I can return there over and over again.<br/>Service was super, keep up the good work guys. Well donešŸ™‚

We stopped at BGR after our movie date & I must say the food looks great, but is underwhelming. The pickles were mushy & tasteless along with bland burger patty. We were also quite disappointed by the amount of "out of stock/ coming soon items" at R270 for 2 burgers, fries & milkshakes, your money could be better spent elsewhere.

Hands down the BEST burger I have ever had. Whatever you've had, times that by 110. Juicy and flavorsome patty, the meat is fresh and very tasty. Beats every burger I've had around the area, in fact, beats any burger I've ever had. Milkshakes double thick and delicious but a bit over priced at R50. And very disappointed that they've now taken their once out of this world waffle fries off their menu. The fries now taste like standard McDonalds. Otherwise if you're going for the burgers 10/10! I've never been able to finish a single burger and fries, so the portions are decent. <br/>Service is fast and friendly, can expect a burger in under 15 mins during peak time. <br/><br/>BRING BACK THE WAFFLE FRIES!!!!
Gabriella Maxine Abrahams
The food is always great, well priced and awesome out of the box sides. The waffle chips are unique and yummy and the frozen custard sinfully delicious. Parking is a mission but well worth it.

The burgers are by far the best in Joburg. You can actually taste the beef, and the pleasure of having the juicy goodness run down your chin is deeply satisfying. The waffle fries are a pleasant surprise and washing it all down with a cool lemonade is a nice contrast to the regular watered-down sodas you would expect to find at other places. Although worth it, I find them to be a bit pricey (Double Cheese Burger R80 + Waffle Fries R25 + Lemonade R20 =R125). I also didn't like the fact that some products were offered on the menu, but not yet available for order.<br/><br/>Pros: Great food, different to the norm and friendly staff.<br/>Cons: Pricey. Not all the products displayed are available.<br/><br/>Follow me on Instagram @TheUnofficialFoodieOfJoburg

Yum yum yum. Simple menu, without bells and whistles, but packs a mean flavour punch. You can choose any toppings for free. The best part is the bottled chilli sauce of theirs. OMW, I asked to buy a bottle, unfortunately, you can't. Sigh. A must-try for any burger lover.

Wow what a delicious burger! I tried the Ubereats delivery method ( really one of my favorite things ), and the food came quickly.<br/>I am always searching for great burgers so i thought Id try a lettuce leaf burger( No bun) on this Friday to try and be good.<br/>The meal came in a cardboard tray which serves as a plate and then the food itself was wrapped tightly in a paper fold, so you could actually hold up your burger and eat it.Ā <br/>It was really yummy and all their toppings are free! How awesome is that? So you can go to town ,or select a few favorites. The lettuce burger was R55 which i thought was really well prices considering I could barely finish mine.Ā <br/>Toward the end I opted to eat the last bits with a fork and knife because the lettuce starts falling apart. ButĀ <br/>that wasn't a big deal.<br/>Id recommend these guys, they certainly have tasty burgers!<br/>Ā <br/> <br/>( my pics may not do justice to the size and look of the burger, I also dropped it so it fell apart because of my own error !)
Meagan Hutchons
Really delicious and juicy burgers. I like that they keep it very simplistic and don't over complicate the burgers. The fries are also delicious

How is it possible that this is the only burger in Gauteng worth driving out for (or eating at all)? This is simply the best burger money can buy (and at any price this burger will be a bargain). I have been to BGR a number of times, and they manage to consistently make a fantastic burger. To make such a "basic" burger so tasty is really hard to find.<br/>I always go for a Cheese burger, with "the works" and some mustard sauce - perfection!!<br/><br/>I know that this is not my typical review, but in line with not reviewing everything that I stuff my face with - this place surely needs a special mention.<br/>I know that Rocomammas used to be very good, but unfortunately since Rocomammas was sold to Spur, their burgers became mass produced, flavorless, stale bread, tasteless and sauce drenched. So in short guys - if you crave a terrific burger, haste to BGR.<br/>My rating of 4.5 is in line with my usual rating approach (where a 5 for me is only for perfect fine-dine experience...)<br/><br/>How I Rate and review an establishment :<br/>1: Terrible, will never return will never recommend.<br/>2: Ok, not worth special effort, I can make the food better at home...<br/>3: Satisfied, restaurant offer good service and satisfactory food, the money paid is in line with quality of food received.<br/>4: A gem, worth visiting for a treat or special occations and referring friends.<br/>5: The very rare and best - fine dining, incredible food, presentation, and service. Honestly no more than 6 such places in South Africa !<br/><br/>Establishment: Fast food<br/>Related restaurants in this class: Shake Shack burgers (USA and now also UK), and though I'm not fond of Dukes, they are probably the closest in South Africa.<br/><br/>Food - 10/10<br/>Service 10/10<br/>Romantic factor 2/10<br/>Decor 2/10<br/>Value 9/10<br/>Satisfaction 10/10<br/><br/>Lastly take note- I do not have time to review every chicken coop that sell food or to rate typical places, we all know what you get at these establishments and the average person does not need advice on eating at your local Debonairs or Spur!

All I can say to this is WOW! Found out about this spot on Instagram and had to try it out. They are still on the come up and haven't fully set out their menu.<br/>Their burgers and fries look amazing, all you want to do is look at your food and take pictures. The burgers are made to perfection with fresh toppings and a fresh bun. The fries could maybe be thee best fries I've had in Joburg and you can never go wrong with them. All in all, if you're in Joburg and haven't yet been to BGR, it's about time you give them a visit.

Quite simply the very best most delicious burger I have ever tasted .... the lettuce wrapped burger takes the guilt out of eating a burger too! The staff are friendly and very eager to please , and patient in describing all the options.... my new favourite place!
Rebeca Clark
I love how much this place reminds me of In n Out in California. <br/>Small menu, simple yet TASTY burgers... love the waffle fries šŸŸ and the shakes are a treat! <br/>The service was really helpful and quick... wish they would be closer to Pretoria :)

Shared a burger from BGR with my wife. (We had just shared a pie from Milk Bar, in case you were thinking I'm sort of person who can't handle a burger on his own.) It was the first and last time I'll share one with her. They are delicious! Meaty and juicy with great crispy caramelized bits. Proper fast food greatness! The milkshakes also kick ass with some sort of custard base (so I was told) which makes them ultra smooth and creamy. DO IT!! <br/>
Tshego Makoe
The best burger and fries I've had in Joburg. The service is great, the team is super efficient and the owners really pay attention to detail ensuring that they are producing nothing but the best fast food and the highest standards. The culture of the restaurant is also something to be commended. I really love this startup and their background story!

Finally got to try a burger, it was actually my cheat meal! <br/>I had a single cheeseburger which was soo good and juicy! I didn't have the waffle fries I'll try them next time
Bene Katabua
They've changed location! This was such a good move for them. They have a bigger space, and are more accessible. I ordered the cheeseburger, waffle fries and lemonade. The burger kind of just melted in my mouth. I had it with peppadew and the BGR sauce. I mean - heavenly. So yum. The waffle fries were also delicious, crispy and soft on the inside. The lemonade was refreshing in this heat, but too tall for me to finish. I really enjoyed the meal, and the presentation. Definitely going back with friends soon.

I really enjoyed my meal at GBR. The whole experience was wonderful; from the friendly service from the minute we entered, to the actual food. <br/>I had a double cheeseburger with the works and mushrooms, waffle fries, lemonade, and black + white frozen custard. EVERYTHING was so tasty. Though the portion size of the fries was a bit small. The frozen custard was a delight to eat, so so smooth, and melts almost immediately in your mouth. <br/>For the burger, the bun was soft, the veggies in the were fresh, the patty's were cooked to perfection. The best part? They were seasoned perfectly, not too salty. <br/>
Philip Goosen
Nice burger joint and definitely a step up from your typical burger take away joint. The patties are real meat and the burger to bun ratio is perfect. I went for the double cheese burger with "the works" option. The cheese was really good and melted into the burger, however i do believe they were a bit light on the gerkhins and sauce. Which was really disappointing for me though was the fries, it was soggy, dry and generally just unappealing.

I'd heard BGR has the best burgers in town so we decided to try it out one Sunday evening. The parking in the new Trumpet precinct is a bit of a nightmare, which made getting a take away a lengthy process. The menu is simple and I liked that you could chose as few or as many fillings as you liked. Was really disappointed when I ordered fries to be told they had run out. I mean, you only offer a handful of items on your menu, and what is a burger without fries! The burger itself was tasty, a little on the oilier side, and more processed tasting than a "gourmet"burger you'd get at Hudson's or the like, and it was quite small. My boyfriend landed up rummaging around in the fridge for left overs as he was still hungry afterward. Best to order a double! Hopefully next time we'll get to sample the fries.
Caroline O'Flaherty
Ask anyone one of my family and friends what I most probably will order off a menu and it is the burger! I totally rate a place on how good their burgers are, so much so that some have threatened not to go out with me unless I order something different. The good thing is at BGR they can say nothing!<br/><br/>All I can say is that they have done a fantastic job with their new premises and that their burgers in terms of flavor and quality never fail to delight!
MichF
I was very impressed with their cheeseburger which consisted of a brioche bun with chargrilled beef patty fresh tomato, lettuce, onion and mayo. Understated, but the perfection of each element contributed to one of the best burgers I've had.
Nathan Vermaak
BGR burgers are the best take out burgers i have eatten in Johannesburg. They allow you to fully customise your burger, their burger patties are loaded with flavour and its a nice plus that the soda is bottomless.
Garth Balabanoff
The best fast food burger in town, hands down. BGR is great contender to the infamous Shake Shack burger. What to order: a double burger, with the works, and fries. Dessert frozen custard. Yum!!
Shannon Van Wyk
I ordered from BGR through UberEATS (which was amazing). The burgers are some of the best that I've had since moving to Joburg from Cape Town. At first R60 for a cheeseburger seemed a bit pricey but the menu allows you to add as many of the available toppings as you'd like, for free. BGR is definitely going to be my new go to takeout spot. That being said, it wouldn't hurt to throw some cheese fries on the menu.

BGR has newly opened in what's become hot trendy spot in Rosebank. The location is really vibey, it's in the middle of the local art hub surrounded by all the main art galleries in Rosebank. It's a cool spot to grab a quick casual bite with friends. <br/><br/>Their menu is straight forward, you order a burger plain or with cheese and can choose as many toppings as you want for free. It's an easy take away burger, a notch up from the usual fast food joints. I feel as though they have a great thing going on. They could do with some improvement though, seeing as though the burger industry is booming.<br/><br/>Their flavour could be more unique, The 'BGR' signature sauce tastes like 1000 island nothing new . You can add your own condiments like tomato sauce & mayo- there sauces weren't very exciting or different. There's no healthy alternative to chips- they do already offer a healthier burger without the bun so it would just be nice to complement it. <br/>The decor looks a bit unfinished especially after walking past the Milk Bar whose restaurant decor is on point and full of colour. <br/><br/>If you want a quick simple burger then it's worth a try, it's definitely a fun spot. It's still new so hopefully they will improve and find their feet.
Junior
This place could potentially become a solid 4 but I think I got to their spot as they just moved in and their menu is still short of line items. <br/><br/>It's an American themed burger place. And their patties taste really nice. Their magnum opus for me at this point, is their freshly crushed lemonade. I even took a serving home to drink with some gin. Great experience, great aesthetics.

After having a friend tell me that she had the best burger of her life here, I had to try it out. The restaurant is in a nice location and I liked the layout. It was a quiet evening so the service was fairly quick. <br/><br/>However, our burgers were very disappointing. At R60 a burger (excluding chips) I expected something decent. The burgers were very small and pretty much tasted like a below-average Steers burger. It was also pretty oily and actually not filling at all. <br/><br/>There are far better burger joints in Joburg.
KGrace
As someone who has attempted to eat every burger Johannesburg has on offer, I can confidently state that BGR is the best burger in town, no competition. If you are into gourmet burgers with goat's cheese/ kimchi/ sriracha/ something deep fried- then this isn't the place for you. But if you're one of us simple folk who craves the burgers of yesteryear- simple, juicy, filled with flavour- then welcome old friend, this is your new home. These are burgers as they should be: with simple flavoursome toppings; juicy delicious patties made on the spot; fresh buns; and great crispy-on-the-outside-creamy-on-the-inside fries. I have tried every topping, but would now just recommended going with a double cheese burger with 'the works.' The staff are warm, young, and super helpful. The vibe is hip and fun but not a 'scene.' With humble beginnings in the back of a Caltex garage, the new location on the recently developed Keyes avenue art-strip has maintained its unpretentiousness with its bared-back and not overtly-hipster decor. Just be prepared for BGR to become a constant craving, I might have to start going there in different disguises.

After everything I heard about BGR, I was really excited to go eat here. At first I was impressed, the restaurant looks really great on the inside, and I appreciate the bold menu with only two main meal options, a burger or a cheese burger. I also liked that toppings don't cost anything extra.<br/><br/>I ordered a cheese burger with "the works" which doesn't come with a side. Chips are an extra R20. So after paying R60 for a burger, and a rather sh ort wait my food arrived. At first it looked delicious, but it was on the small side.<br/><br/>I did enjoy the burger, it wasn't bad at all, but I was really d@isappointed because of what to you'd expect from a burger place like this is something a bit more amazing.<br/><br/>If I ever go back it would be for the frozen custard.

I've heard great things about BGR the last few months and being a Burger and Milkshake fanatic, it was inevitable that I'd head their way. <br/>A simple refined menu is great and BGR is Burger place and its great to see them not delve from their chosen route with unnecessary extras, on a humble menu. Sadly, on our visit masking tape covered about 30% of their offerings, which is a lot to not have on hand with a menu so small. <br/><br/>Nevertheless, I was there for a Burger with Chips and a Milkshake, and that they had. Well only vanilla Milkshake as they were out of chocolate as well... <br/>I decided to get the full monty and ordered a Double Cheeseburger with the Works - basically all the dressing a Burger needs including their famous BGR sauce - and a Vanilla Milkshake for the lack of a selection. <br/><br/>The presentation was on spot, reminiscent to me at least, of great Burger drive-ins, the picture talks for itself! For the rest, that's why I'm here. <br/>As is customary, I dove into the chips first to appease my drooling mouth as I orientated my meal for this feast. The chips were incredibly fresh and tasty, by far some of the best chips I've had at Burger joints and a token side that all should consider when visiting BGR. The Burger on the other hand was nothing exceptional at all. Veering away from the sum of the parts, my first bite was exclusively of an exposed portion of the Burger patty, which to my disappointment tasted of nothing... This was indeed a sad discovery as a Burger is defined by the sum of its entire make up, but the heart of it lies in the meat.<br/><br/>Not to be discouraged just yet I took a large crunching bite of the entire Burger and it tasted rather similar to what I've come to expect from better Fast Food Burger outlets like Burger King - Sadly completely lacking any BGR Sauce (probably out of that too) it tasted no better...<br/><br/>Thus far I wasn't too impressed, the only remaining candidate of the meal possibly able to redeem what BGR had to offer was the Milkshake, vanilla, specifically. Made from frozen custard I was pleasantly surprised at how great it tasted. Lacking all which I hate like clumps and overpowering, often poorly mixed flavouring syrup and rather flaunting a smooth, sensational taste I was very happy to end my meal with such a great Shake!<br/><br/>All in all, an alright experience. Even with great chips and a good shake, a Burger joint is judged on its burgers and from my single experience I can safely say that they're average at best.

Stopped at BGR for a quick bite in what I believe is their new location. At first glance the space has a trendy zen look to it but feels a bit unfinished. There's not much in way of ambiance giving it more of a takeaway vibe however the staff are warm and friendly. Ordering was easy with just two burger options to choose from along with a range of toppings which can be customized to your liking. I had the hamburger with the works, fries and hot sauce on the side. The burger itself was tasty and I enjoyed the slightly charred flavour. Think Rocomamas or Steers burgers in a slightly more hipster setting, give them a try the next time you're in the area.
Blair Burmeister
BGR for the first time was amaze! the burger was so perfect and delicious. Really simple ingredients but so tasty! Brioche-like bun and juicy patty with the right amount of cheese. Second time round was a little disappointing. Lacked sauce and didn't have much cheese. Really good choc milkshakes

When it comes to hamburgers, BGRs burgers are truly some of the best. Do not expect a gourmet style burger, but more of an American diner like experience. Almost like shake shack. <br/>Quality of the meat is unreal. Great fresh ingredients. And the service is friendly and fast. Add this to an around the clock good vibe, there is no chance you will not enjoy your meal. Em Hassall

this place is now routine, Sunday burgers at BGR. By far incredible quality meat, tasty and generous patties with their secret BGR sauce. Happy friendly and efficient staff, such a great vibe in their new location. Best burgers in Jozi

We finally got a chance to try BGR this weekend and it pretty much lived up to all the hype. The burgers are basic but damn tasty. I like the fact that you can choose whatever topping you want for free, but the burgers themselves are quite pricey to not come with any sides or drinks. The fries we ordered separately were a lot like mcd's fries. The frozen custard was good but nothing out of the ordinary. <br/><br/>I also really like the venue, it's in a trendy little spot in rosebank and has nice seating areas. The waiters were also vibey and cheerful.
Emily Smith
The new location for BGR is much more fitting than the previously tucked away little spot on Jan Smuts. The restaurant is based on the classic American burger joint. I love the fact that there are only two options with basic toppings proving that all you need is to get the basics right and use fresh ingredients to make out of this world food. A tad pricier than a normal take out joint but definitely worth it. Also tasted the frozen custard which was super rich and creamy.
Qhawe Luthuli
Not the biggest fan of burgers but I think I fell in love when I had BGR. <br/>They're not cheap but I think it's worth it for the quality. Love the fact that they give you a healthy alternative where you can swap a regular bun for a lettuce bun and it will still taste just as good. <br/>Simple yet scrumptious.
Clayman
Very decent burger. It really all comes together. The co-founder Jed is very open to feedback and is a pleasure to talk to. <br/>Happy to have found this place. Try out the lemonade and frozen custard too. All great.

Take the best parts of macdonalds, steers and every other fast food joint - and you get BGR. It's simple and delicious and has a unique vibe. Recommended<br/>

Absolutely loved this burger , the meat was juicy and full of flavour. The roll was dense and the right size to Patty ratio. One of my all time favourites. Only thing stopping full score is the size of the burger. I had a double burger and could easily have eaten another. I would seriously suggest a larger Patty for the price

Got take aways a while ago. I think the fact that you can pick and choose what you do and do not want is a huge bonus. Family members had had a really good experience a few weeks prior to my visit, however my meal definitely did not live up to BGR's reputation. The burger was very dry and very overcooked. I do think that they may have just been having a bad night as they were really busy. I would definitely give BGR a second chance and I think it's important to comment on the service as well. The service was really really good. The staff were super lively and friendly - they are a big reason the rating of this review is as high as it is.

This is simply the best Burger money can buy. I had it twice in one day just to make sure it was as good as I thought it was. With so many places saying they have the best Burger it has always been like they are good bit not the best. We know have the best.
Francesca Conradie
Fantastic burgers, (best in town?....not sure yet) fresh hot chips, great lemonade and absolutely superb staff. A bit hard to find, all in all a great find. Will definitely be back

The best Hamburger iv ever ever ever had in my entire life. OMG IM IN LOVE. NOTHING LIKE IT IN JHB. Toasted bun best patty homemade and soo tasty. Just unbelievable. Iv been back twice. Will go back forever.
Nicole Zetler Shapiro
Been twice to BGR, and an overall good addition to the burger scene in JHB. What sets this burger joint apart from the others, is its fresh, quality ingredients and the lots of free toppings. The burgers are tasty with no heavy sauces and gimmicks-like some<br/>of the others. The fries are also very tasty. Great and friendly service, but the location could be better (hidden away in a petrol station with a lot of construction around it)
James McLaren
I LOVE this place. It's the best kept secret in Joburg. <br/>Authentic American burgers with the best milkshakes ever made by man. Clever service system makes for a quick takeaway or sit down munch. <br/>Really top quality meat, especially. Kitchen is open so you can see such how fresh everything is! <br/>Rad place.
