Review Wang Thai - Johannesburg

Raquel M
Very good location.. in the Nelson Mandela plaza. Great atmosphere and staff. Food is reasonable and tasty. Service was an A+. Food different.. seafood soup reminded me of a Greek lemon broth. Chicken pad Thai 🍜 has a heavy sauce with 🥜 peanuts on the size. Great place to visit for sure. If you like my review or find helpful, please click like... thanks 🙏

Great food! Open and welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately as soon as kithchen was closed we felt rushed to leave... waiters switched music off, packing chairs and tables to leave. They didn't even offer coffee, after dinner drinks or desert. The stars are for the great food and atmosphere.

We returned after a few years away and really enjoyed the food. We had the Tom yum goong and the wrap starters. The soup wraps starters did not look very presentable but tasted great. The fillet on the hot grill and the duck were very good as well. Maybe a little cilantro to pretty up the soup as we have had in Thailand and other restaurants around the world. Prices are high but food was enjoyable.

Staff is great. They know the menu well & make great recommendations on what's good (best seller). Their virgin cocktails are thee best!! Best in town!! Great atmosphere too.

Cosy and relaxed. Food is good, tasty and well prepared. Staff is helpful and attentive.

Fantastic food. Drinks did take some time for a Wednesday evening and service could have been a bit quicker. Overall a great experience
Marcela Bonomo
Very nice place at Mandela square. Great food and atmosphere. I recommend the pork buns & the gin cocktails... really a must!

Always have a great time here plus can save cause on entertainer. Dim sum main meals all delicious never had a fail. Lovely inside dining area. Fantastic dinner spot classy crowd. Great location overlooking sandton square
Babatunde Anifowoshe
Nice atmosphere, better to go on weekdays 8f you don't want to wait. Weekends starting from Friday are fully booked. Everything on the menu is wonder ful. I tried the beef and it was sensational
John Guy Taylor
Very classy and beautiful restaurant with delicious food and in the heart of Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. Friendly staff and excellent service and a really nice place to go with family and friends
Ndumza Vaccu
We had a great time and I will go again provided they increase the portions
Art Viljoen
Lovely atmosphere, delicious food and very well priced for the location. Staff is friendly as well

Really enjoyed our experienced at WANG Thai. Service was very good and the food was great. Delicious ostrich!

We were a group of 10 and visited this place for dinner. While the restaurant was full, they managed to give us a table reasonably quickly. We ordered food in family style and the food came reasonably quickly. We tried to order wine and many of the wines that we wanted were not available. The point is not just non-availability, but they ask me for a choice of wine, come back 10 minutes later and then tell me that it is not available. By the time we got the wine the food was pretty much over. The food quality was okay, one person had a bit of stomachache, but the remaining were okay. Overall, the place is a good place to visit, and the prices were reasonable.
Rollo
I tried their veg springrolls and coconut fish curry. The fish curry was loaded with flavor and is my new favorite dish.
Carmen Maduray
Really good and tasty food. Portion sizes are generous. Been here around 3 times and never been disappointed with the food ever. Highly recommended

We've passed by Wang Thai many times and on this occasion, we decided to go in.. the decor and ambience of the restaurant is great. The service is prompt but the food wasn't anything special. A bit sweet for my liking. My husband had the prawn stir fry which was less sweet but quite overcooked.
Yajna
We ordered the honey duck and beef stir fry- both were really good! Wasn't the biggest fan of the duck as it was quite sweet - but it was HONEY so I can't really fault them. The noodle on its own was delicious, as was the stir fry. The restaurant has a really nice look/feel and service was good. Would go back!

Haven't had the chance to try this restaurant up till now. We were a table of 9 people. Order some starters: Chicken Satai, thai green salad, duck spring rolls. Starters portions were a decent size. Chicken was cooked just perfectly. The wasabi chicken salad was also something new to me. My waiter was very attentive and always on the ball. But if you had to ask me if this was an authentic thai restaurant, I would have to disagree
Brittany Smith
Absolutely loved dining here! The ambience is great! Service was a little slow on this particular evening but the staff were really friendly and the food was to die for! I'll definitely be returning.
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
An absolute classic, they have a really good vegetarian selection. The Meang Khum is my favorite. The flavors are insanely amazing. They are vegan friendly too! Must try
Maphuthi Martha Maluleke
A friend recommended this restaurant and the food was worth every penny. Thank you for a lovely Thai experience. I will definitely be back soon for more of your amazing food.
Vuyokazi Qabaka
This is one of my favorite Thai food restaurants. The starters are always a highlight. We had the spinach and cream dim sum and the prawn parcels which you can never go wrong with. The prawn meat in the prawn parcels is so soft and tasty. For mains, we had noodles and the seafood platter, which were both quite bland. The decor is lovely and I had no issues with the service.
Elle Mbadaliga
This restaurant offers one of the best dunk meat I've ever had. The decor is abit dull but they still offer a fine dine experience. The waiters are very friendly and pay attention to detail. You should definitely try the duck meat.
Jad Nasr
Best thai place i ve tried in joburg. Excellent taste and quality. I took pears dumplings and chicken massaman curry , top notch every single bite
Robyn Louw
What a wonderful experience. The food was phenomenal (literally everything we ordered was bursting with flavor and color). Starters were delicious, each with a unique dipping sauce. Mains created quite the spotlight as they flambéd the seafood dish. Dessert didn’t disappoint either, my favorite was the deep friend bananas! Friendly staff and a beautiful setting. It was a night to remember and I can’t wait to return!
Nicole Rossouw
Terrible service. Food took over an hour to arrive. Waiter was non-existent, pity because the food was good. However for the pricing think there are better places out there.
Tarryn
been to this place a few times and everytime the food is outstanding....service is very quick so if you order food expect within 10 min...I had thai green curry, also ordered their angry duck and noodles....both dishes are flawless...medium is not that hot...they give you extra chilli on the side if you would like it to be hotter. really good thai food
Abhaybagde
Ambience is very good, but the Thai green curry was not as per expected. Broccoli in Thai curry no way. Plz do not experiment Thai curry taste
Sindi Nkosi
This is a place that my family and I always go back to. There is so much to discover on the menu and there is so much flavour in all the dishes. The service is always great.
Chereen Williams
Very disappointing. Stunning restaurant. Food was average lacked the intensity of flavours that is associated with Thai cuisine. Service was slow and poor. Overpriced for the quality of food.
Morgan
Overall, I was underwhelmed with my dinner here.
We took an international guest for what we thought was JHB's best thai food.
The food was decent, but nowhere near the level we expected given the pricing and previous reviews. Having just come back from Thailand, maybe our expectations were too high...
Service was a slight problem too - pushy to get our orders in, but then had to go look for our waitress to ask for the bill. Also waited an overly long time to get our plates cleared.
Maybe it was just a bad night, but when you're paying so much, I would expect a little more.
Zain And Faye
The decor is amazing and the service was really fast!
Some of the best asian food I've tasted around Johannesburg.

Although a bit on the pricey side, the food is worth the splurge once in a while!
Cynthia
Went for dinner with a work colleague. Service was great as soon as we walked in, first time going, I ordered the lamb Shank which was a bit on the sweet side, my boss had the steamed fish which also had a very sweet taste to it and unfortunately he could not finish, the head and shoulder massage he got think made up for it 😉. The branch in Cape Town is much better.
Sangeetha Thomas
Hmmmm..... Ambience was great, classy restaurant with really good service.I went there over the weekend, with a friend. The starters, SO YUM, we had hong kong pears and the dim sums. Definitely worth a try.
The mains on the other hand, not so great, we had the Thai red curry prawn and the angry duck, seemed a tad tasteless.
Shubh Saha 🇮🇱
Awesome Thai place at Nelson Mandela square. Classy place. We ordered some non veg starters, along with, green salad. The Thai red curry n stir fried veggies were very tasty. Coming back, surely
Emma Kayleigh
Pork gyoza for starter, very delicious. Prawn Phad Thai and chicken Cashew Nut for mains, a bit on the bland side unfortunately. Otherwise a beautiful restaurant overlooking Nelson Mandela Square, friendly staff but a bit slow.
Sashin Naidoo
A decent dining experience, the food wasn’t too bad. The ambience is great. I personally wouldn’t suggest a very late night dinner as staff seem to be tired and service can lack a little (personal opinion).
Lily
Always a regular, food is amazing even when i try out new dishes. I especially love their steamed dishes. Ambience is also quite great! Fave!!!
Nadhiya
Been here multiple times including for Restaurant Week. My favourite dish is the kingklip coconut curry which I noticed isn’t on the menu anymore. That’s a real pity. The lamb shank was on the menu for restaurant week and it was equally delicious. The portion sizes are HUGE so go hungry. I love the vibe of this place and the lighting is perfect for date night. There’s also a good range of veg dishes and non-alcoholic drinks. The prices are a bit steep though especially when we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to Asian food.

We're often at Wangthai and it's become our favourite Thai restaurant in Sandton. The decor and ambiance is perfect. It's always very busy and has an awesome vibe. Our meals have always been tasty and fresh ingredients are used. We love sitting on the outside area overlooking the piazza.
I would definitely recommend Wangthai if you're in Sandton!
Llynneth V Petersen
We ate duck spring rolls and curried prawn balls to start. Both were good. But the main meals, prawn green curry and prawn pad thai, were nothing short of delicious!
Service was on the ball.
Reginald B.
Went one night during stay and was a perfect way to begin the weekend. Really loved their drink selection and food.

The spring rolls were good and the pad thai, and chicken basil had the table buzzing.
Ilyaas A. Mayet
Service is quick and friendly. The food is well cooked and seasoned. The chicken with basil and chili is amazing! I also enjoy the start portion of chicken strips deep fried with sesame seeds. The portion of plain noodles is big even though they try and get you to order one portion for two-I would advise against this
Leish.duplessis
Always a pleasure going to Wangthai. We regularly have dinner with the family here or just the 2 of us! The green curry is definitely one of my favorites
Leanne
Awesome restaurant. I had the Wok Beef and I would definitely recommend it. The service was great. Be careful of the hot dishes - they are VERY HOT! I will be back
Luther
Really good food. Really bad service combined with an arrogant and indifferent manager make for a bad experience. It could have been a seriously good experience. You got the difficult part right.
Mealyn Joyce
We really did not enjoy our experience. Sushi starter took way to long, also Kitchen closes before 10pm.

I always understood kitchens to close at 10pm waiters are rushing around clearing up making us feel very uncomfortable. The service was just not what I would expect.

Food overall was delicious 😊

Saul Ben Smith
You know what i don't like? I don't like service staff getting snippy when i don't order a drink. I don't drink with meals at home, i never have. Sometimes a glass of wine to enhance the meal, but never a glass of coke or a jug of water
. If I'm drinking and then i eat, I'm having a meal with my drink, not a drink with a meal. So when i say "no, I'm fine thanks" to the standard "can i get you drinks to start?" I don't like getting a filthy look in response.
Rant over.
Apart from that... we order a cashew thing, ot has these big cubes of seaweed something or other that I've never eaten before, so that was pretty awesome. A nice enough dish.
Also had tom yum goong (served luke warm😟) , a bit bland but its such a vibrant dish that i love it anyway.
Partner has phad thai... because Noodles. It was good as expected.

Wangthai is fine. Wouldn't repeat because the square hasbette options. Our meal was 200 a head but you're actually easily looking at 350 a head.
Jane Sikwe
Quite delightful to come across a restaurant that has food with a great flavour profile and depth. Complex delicious food.
Service was quite slow and reckon the waiter could have been more attentive.
This is a place you should definitely try - the ambiance, deco, food and cocktails are a real treat.
GlennM
Very nice Thai food with authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, decent wine list, with great service and reasonable prices. Can't really ask for much more than that. Not quite as good as Thailand but we are a long way from South East Asia here and to be honest, it's a pretty great restaurant that helped me get a Thai fix when living a long way from my home in Melbourne. So thanks!
Sesh
I've always found this spot to be quite pretty, something about the dim lighting and oriental quirks. Some of my favourite go to dishes are the stir fry beef chilli basil and chicken cashew. Tonight we decided to tried the lamb shank in peanut sauce and it was interestingly delicious. The wine selection and cocktails are good and service makes this spot a place you keep returning to.
Kimson Chan
I went around here for lunch and I must say, the food is pretty decent. The fried noodles appear to have the bigger portion than the noodles on soup. My beef noodles was good but the down side was that I would have loved to have more. Other than that, it was pretty decent place.
Cdawg Dubya
A really good looking restaurant with an impressive and imposing menu that will yield an option for every palate and appetite.
Wine selection also good with fair pricing.
I found the staff to be friendly and the food comes reasonably quickly.
Good presentation of the food and thoroughly enjoyed.
Chalapathi Rao Immidi
A must visit Thai restaurant on the Square. Most of the stuff we tried was tasty and seemed very authentic. Satay is good and also the fish.
Shàmai-Sassy Khan
What they don't state is that if you're a table of 10+ people you don't get to order from the menu, there is a selected set menu's at the set price you must choose from. This I didn't like at all!
The food is good and the location of course but the customer service needs some tending too.
Neville Hewett
Seafood over cooked, when we finally got the manager to come to our table she argued and refused to listen to critism. Will never come back here... Such a pity, we used to love coming here, will never be back.
Sim.sischy
Major disappointment and let down..main course duck was over cooked and cold, noodles were cold, even rice was just luke warm ...
The other four guests had same problem .
Where is the quality control, and the kitchen runway management ?
I see this eatery is now aligned with So Yum in Hyde Park..similar issues there.
Sushi may be your best bet ..best served cold !
Hungry Ronin
Elegantly and tastefully decorated, Wangthai had a warm ambiance and service fitting of a high end restaurant. Matched with confident service and surprisingly authentic thai food, we were quite pleased with our dinner experience. My duck red curry was rich yet balanced, and the stir fry of mushrooms and cashews was fresh and packed with umami flavor and texture. Wang thai is a much welcomed, well executing Asian restaurant in Sandton.
Diantha Govender
Cocktails were great. Had prawn springrolls and pastry for starters which were amazing. Chicken Phad thai was very sweet (I expected it to be spicy). Overall 👍
Suzanne Strydom
Not normally the type of place we would stop for a quick mid-shopping bite (seems a bit more formal/dinner time dining), but with the Entertainer app in hand, we strolled up the steps to the restaurant. Lovely outdoor seating space on a balmy summer's afternoon. Our waiter was excellent. The food was BEYOND delicious (we had a Duck Red Curry and a Massaman Curry). Usually, I feel a bit self-conscious (and maybe even guilty?) whipping out the app, but it was handled graciously by the restaurant. I can't wait to go back!
Rishaan26
Awesome Place! Been here twice and everytime it's a home run! The drinks and food are on point! Staff is great and the service is impeccable! Love it! This is at the top of my list for favourites in Sandton!
Lorenzo Evello
Great decor good service below average food. Great place for sandtons finest finance yuppies who like to be seen in a glamorous setting but dont really know the difference between real food and cardboard.. as long as the price is high and the lights very very shiny it must be good right...
Fatima Laher
Bad service can really ruin a meal.

This restaurant is a tried and tested favourite. The food was great and flavorsome as always. The rating is for the shocking service. The waitress serving us was just plain rude, rolling her eyes at us and asking us if we are going to leave. Strange being hurried through our meal considering the place was nearly empty from Friday lunch service. She also got one order wrong and sighed and rolled her eyes when she was politely asked to correct it.
AN
Love the food, the atmosphere, the service. The menu has a great variety and the cocktails are wonderful. It's a really relaxing, chilled vibe. Great for good conversation and interesting food
GMan
I havent even started with the food we had to call the waiters to get attention after sitting for 20min without even been served drinks. Not impressed already
Dietmar Breuer
Was there Sunday evening and made the experience that even though the restaurant was 50% full at 19.00 we had to wait 35 min until the starters came and another 40 min until the main arrived at our table. Meanwhile some excuses, food will come soon, but soon meant still 15 min later. No attention to our drinks, even not able to bring proper glasses. Food arrived finally and was 1. not what we selected, then it was cold and the Waiter claimed wrongly that she had informed about a change in the menu.
Again 10 min to have to wait for the manager to take some time for us, the manager had no solution but only to start now to cook new food for us.
All in all a complete disappointment. Can not recommend at all. Will never go there again, nor recommend to any friend.
Rgds, Dietmar

Went to this lovely restaurant last night, the lovely aromas, sizzling sounds that filled the restaurant and lovely welcoming staff.
The food was an explosion of exquisite flavors. We chose the set menus, so we could have a variety of options, and it’s a definite must if you want to try their signature dishes.
Wendy
2017-11-13
It's a nice Thai restaurant if you prefer a good view. Not many options for vegans. But you will still enjoy the ambiance. Quite a classy place for meeting or dinner. Apparently food is nice for carnivore.
Ashveer Deepnarrain
Wang Thai has to be one of the best Thai Places I have been to in Johannesburg. Great menu selection with authentic flavours dancing on your tastebuds. I had the red prawn curry and egg fried rice - incredible! I also had the chicken and cashew nut stir fry (my favourite Thai dish) - also really really good! Prices are abit expensive but it's definitely a taste that will be remembered.
Orielia Pria Egambaram
Hands down my favourite Thai restaurant !
Wangthai is nestled behind the giant Mandela statue at Nelson Mandela Square.
The food here is really divine. I had the vegetarian pad thai , and to be honest, I didn't even feel like I was missing out on meat. The flavours are great.
The staff are friendly and service is efficient.
I quite enjoyed my dining experience and I loved the decor.
Robyn Amy Fincham
The food was incredible and the service was great! However the wine was very over priced! The food is also very pricey, not sure if it’s worth it. There are better Thai restaurants in JHB.
Let Them Eat Cake
Love Love Love Wangthai! The duck is a winner!! and so is the prawns starter. Staff always friendly, and ready with suggestions. Have never gotten round to trying other dishes, because I know how tasty the duck is. Maybe next time:-;
Gugulethu Gwamanda
Start your service off with their lovely Tom Kai Gai soup then proceed to indulfing in either the Crispy Duck in Honey and Soy sauce, served with rice or Thai Green Prawn Curry with plain rice and your night is made.

Thank Me Later!!!
Marentia Van Kasterop
Wangthai at NMS is a really classy restaurant with carefully selected decor.

The menu boasts very interesting dishes including vegan options.

The food was extremely tasty and well presented. Portion sizes are more than adequate. The service did not dissapoint.

Certainly a well balanced experience.
Miguel Dos Santos
Always a great place to come for Thai food. The food is always fresh and the portion sizes are nice. The food is tasty and not overbearing. Service was friendly but a little slow at times. Definitely a place to come back to

Wangthai is nothing if not consistent - I've been eating here for years.

The things I like
- Both food AND cocktails are delicious - rare to find both
- great service - wait staff is attentive, no matter what corner you're tucked away in and *friendly* (a rare thing in Joburg!)
- great ambience - good for dates with all the low lighting and velvet curtaining ;)
- wide variety of menu options
- food comes quickly
- they do cute things for birthdays, e.g. free desert with sparklers :)

The things I don't like...
- nothing springs to mind

Favourite dishes
- Pla Chu Chee - deep fried fish in on coconut curry sauce (I die each time)
- Prawn Pad Thai- perfect mix of sweet and sour drizzled with ground peanuts
- Pear and Ginger GnT - just try it, you'll thank me.

29/7/17

the last time i felt this elsewhere during a dinner was five or so years ago in an Italian restaurant, my heart linguine-knotted as it was asked the worst question again and again. tonight, over Thai food that never disappoints, my mind was caught between two bus routes, wandering what it would be like if i just told the truth.

what would happen if honesty, arriving in first person through my front door, told the boy entering and exiting my kitchen gum wrapper secrets? or if honesty wrote letters screaming "let me in", if honesty sought the bespectacled again to tell them that there is still frosted glass separating me from the rest of the world.

every bone in my body is a wishbone hoping for more courage, the undressing of fear we itched for last year in our friendly reminders of radical vulnerability. mostly i am flesh-raw with my necessity for you. you, and chocolate croissants and a day like those in which we transferred light to lizards in the afternoon pollen of the bunked lessons.

would you still like to know? because the dead man came to me again and told me to touch everything but i didn’t have hands. and something in my cupboard swims still. i nearly died this month and it was peaceful. and thus terrifying. only you would understand. i thought death would be a violent reckoning but it was all pulse and blue streaming through and then quiet.

no traffic; one of your fire escapes, one of your 3ams.

Wang Thai, an authentic Thai cuisine establishment situated on Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. What a fine dining experience with such high authenticity here at Wang, holding tightly to their Asian influences with appearances such as coconut, aromatic curry pastes and fresh herbs.
The Food Musketeer
06.07.2017 Looking for Dinner places that are halaal in the nearby Sandown facility is a mission. Wangthai says there Chicken is Halaal even though the kitchen isn't halaal. So I decided to book this spot for a work dinner with colleagues.

Gorgeous venue, love the setup and decor and definitely impressive on entry. Also a romantic vibe if you need something nearby. Friendly and helpful staff are on hand to assist.

As we were a big group we opted for starter platters to share. Yum, everything delicious crunchy and tasty and accompanied by various sauces for the Springrolls, Tempura Prawns and Prawn Parcels. We did experience finding something in one of the spring rolls which we brought to their attention hence they could have scored higher.

We all shared their Fishcakes too, it has a bite to it and went down well also some might find it spicy.

For mains we each ordered our own choices. I tried the Angry Duck witb Rice. I somehow didn't enjoy the taste of the noodles. Be warned the Duck is extremely hot but oh so tasty. The duck meat was cooked perfectly. The others had the Thai style Lamb Shank with Peanut Masala Curry, another had the Crispy Duck with a Red Wine curry sauce. All tasted fantastic.

We didn't have time or space in our tummies for dessert. Hopefully next time I will give that a try. They also have a good wine selection but they are rather pricy.
Hot Or Not
Great location, good food and efficient service. We had a nice evening here. We enjoyed everything that was ordered. Will be back soon for more.

Food - 3.5/5.0
Service - 2.8/5.0
Atmosphere - 3.0/5.0

If you go during summer, fortunately the restaurant has a mist cooling system in the outdoor area, so you can enjoy the views of Mandela Square. Nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Great starters and tasty Thai curries. Good upmarket Thai restaurant.
Neil Smith
Reallynice setting, very clean and great service. The food was fresh and the quality very good. The seafood hot plate and the ostrich the the angry Thai sauce was an excellent choice for what we felt Like. They have a decent wine list at reasonable prices.I will definitely go back there
Sachin Ram-Asary
My first time here and I was very impressed. Extremely attentive and friendly staff. The food was excellent (we had the chicken satay, fish cakes, green curry and prawns). Will definitely be back.
Anikesh Sama
Nice ambiance, great food.
However, Wifi terrible and excessively long waiting time. Was on the verge of leaving the restaurant without eating.
Waiter asked for tips, which is a first in my visit to SA
Rahul Brambha
Went to dinner for a friend's birthday last night at Wang Thai - first thing you notice when you arrive is the delicious smell of the restaurant & the beautiful layout. We were seated in the private booth and had great service all evening. The food was Great- Prawn parcels for starters are a must!!!! And I had the beef Satay which was an absolutely winner - beautiful cooked beef on a sizzling pan served with veggies 👍 will be back to taste to the rest of the menu!
Athena Pavlakis
Had an amazing spread for Mother's Day. Everything was perfect - the angry duck, the prawns were all divine.
Isaac, our waitron, went the extra mile to ensure we had an excellent day.
Reema Vather
Excellent service. Fish cakes and chicken satay starters were average but the chicken cooked perfectly (most restaurants get this wrong) My husband had a prawn dish and I had the chicken green curry - both mains were spiced to perfection and the green curry was the perfect creamy consistency with patty pans melting in my mouth, even tasting like butter - possibly the best green curry I've had. Will definitely be back.
Monochrome
Good food and service. Food well presented. Great set up of restaurant inside & on the balcony as well. Would come by again. It is worth a visit
Lindy Dall
Today I went to wangthai for lunch, for Restaurant Week. Service was a bit slow in the beginning. But the food was great. Chicken satay was a bit dry but I loved the sauces it came with. Prawn parcels were delicious. Packed well, and quite a few in the portion. Steak fillet for mains was really nice with a great pepper sauce. The chicken curry was super spicy, which I loved. Great lunch Gabriel Levy
Lauren Hargreaves
The fragrant aroma hits you as you walk into the door, and the food that comes thereafter does not disappoint! The service is friendly and food comes in good time. We shared the chicken cashew nut and steamed fish and got a portion of fried rice...absolutely delightful! If you have the Entertainer app you can also use it here which is great! Will definitely be back!
Lionel Shawe
Wangthai never disappoints. Delicious Thai food is pleasant and tranquil surroundings. We just stopped in for a quick lunch. Chicken satays were excellent with tasty sauces. Duck in honey was done just right and the Thai chicken curry was fantastic.
Marcel Malherbe
First time visiting this establishment. Often eateries in the Square are stigmatized.. you think its too expensive to dine there and its not for locals.

We were fortunately wrong about this eatery. Lovely setting with great lighting and great decor, it feels like u in a fine dining establishment rather than a Thai restaurant.

As far as Thai food goes, id say this is one of the better experiences ive had eating at a Thai place in JHB. Food was great and very well prices!

Duck breast was cooked perfectly and the seafood was lovely

Highly recommend this place for Thai
Grant & Sam
The food was nice, but we're not quite sure it's with the price.

We started with the spinach cones; the spinach and palm sugar sauce were good, but the accompaniments could have been better. The prawn red curry was flavourful, with the prawns being well cooked, and the hot level was very spicy. The chicken stir-fry with basil and chilli lacked the chilli (despite ordering it hot, it was very mild), but was tasty despite not really being a stir-fry. At this price point, we expected better vegetables in both dishes than some peppers.

The service was professional, as expected. We did not receive the typical condiments one expects in a Thai restaurant to tailor the food to taste, which was surprising.

We probably wouldn't return. While the food was decent, it was quite expensive for what was actually received, and wasn't worth the price tag in our opinion.
Leverne Mountany
When a restaurant survives in this fickle market for so long you know they are doing something right. Extensive menu options with good quality classics and always a winner with seafood. Elegant ambiance.
Hein Lubbe
A true taste explosion!!! Wow!!! The salty, sweet, sour and spicy elements are very well balanced. Fresh ingredients and top quality meats. The duck with sweet sauce was divine! Relatively small portions...or did it just taste like more?! A bit pricey, but hey you pay for location too. Ambiance is pleasant and service is good. Will definitely visit them again, and again.
Wade Nathan Manning
Wangthai is a well known restaurant often filled up for their superb Thai cuisine. I've been here a couple of times before but my last experience of appalling service will not see me returning for a while. Though the food was good as always, the service dulled the dining experience.
Chante Daries
Ahhh this was a fun restaurant. Great setting and good service always makes me happy. To top it all off the food was delicious and actually not ridiculously expensive concerning it's a Nelson mandela square restaurant. Enjoyable experience and will go back.
Neeta Raga-D
Great service! Love the food! So many options to choose from. Bonus is you can vary your level of spicyness.

The spring rolls and noodle dishes are amazing!

The service is friendly and efficient.
Eve
Lovely experience via uber eats. I tried the pad thai and the green curry.
Was not blown away by the p/thai . I liked the consideration whilst packaging- the sprouts were kept separate.

The Green curry was authentic! Thoroughly enjoyed it, one of my top 3 green curries in JHB for sure.

The Curry does not come with a side so make sure to order 1.

I would like to go back and try their duck dishes.
Suchismita Simhadri
I usually don't like Thai food and this restaurant made me fall in love with Thai . Such a stunning ambience !! Quite good for date night. And the food is really delicious. The starters, main course and the desserts.. everything was good. Try the battered prawns.. good portion for the price. Also the stir fried pineapple rice with prawns and cashew nuts was really yum. Would love to go again.
Eshwar Andhavarapu
I wish I has come here sooner. Really good food. Try the prawns. Anywhere on the menu really. And then the Thai version of samosa and spring rolls - both excellent. I will be going here again. I wish there was one in Pretoria :)

Fantastic ambience! This stunning Thai restaurant is definitely to be recommended for a date night or special evening. Good simple thai food.

Ordered multiple starters to share , the chicken Satay was sent back as very dry , the rest was tasty , then ordered the fillet and the crispy beef and cashew chicken , all very tasty , however they are not shy with garlic in their dishes. Portions very small and at R400 a head pretty pricey

From when we first walked in to when we left this was just a great dining experience.
Our waiter was friendly, funny and efficient. The wine list has some great options, the menu has a lot of variety and the tables are far enough from other diners to have a proper conversation with whoever you are dining with.
We had the green Thai curry and I'm not sure which duck dish but it had a delicious sauce with it.
Will be back many times to work my way through this menu!

Another one of our Restaurant Week Spring 2016 outings! You simply can't fault the absolutely beautiful setting and decor. Our reserved table was waiting with our set menus ready for us. I ordered the deep fried corn, pea and butternut pastry triangles served with a sweet malay tamarind chilli sauce (kari pan je) as my starter. I was surprised to find that this was actually quite a spicy samoosa! Nowhere on the menu was there any warning of this! We then waited quite some time for our main course to arrive. The beef cashew nut was excellent. The menu said that it came served with steamed rice but I was asked if I wanted this, or noodles or egg fried rice. I opted for the steamed rice. My companion ordered thai-style stir fried minced chicken with basil and chilli, served with a fried egg (phad gra phao gai) and was asked what she'd like it served with. She asked for noodles. Her chicken arrived served on a plate accompanied with steamed rice and my beef cashew nut was served with a separate bowl of noodles!! Not quite how we'd ordered it, or how we'd been told it would be served. Dessert was Chinese lichis and 3 sorbets which were refreshing. We explained that we were in a hurry and asked for the bill which arrived but after asking about 3 times for a card machine, we got up to go and pay at the exit and suddenly the waitress and card machine materialised! I'm tempted to return as the food is good but the service was way below par. I expect better from a restaurant of this calibre and both management and staff need to realize this has a bearing on their ratings.

Somebody must have cheated on that duck because he was way to angry. (Corniest cheese of the day, however I am very tired and my humor levels are running low. I've been to the previously decorated and now newly decorated facility and I am so glad they decided to refurb... always great food and yes the angry duck is hot. (Just had a laugh because my phone auto corrected duck to ummmm, never mind.) In my mind, over priced slightly but hey, who's complaining, it's only Sandton right?

Lovely ambience and friendly service..been twice have had the fish and prawns..the food is good bordering on average as at times can be bland for Thai food..i have had better Thai food..creme brulee dessert is good and i enjoyed the banana spring rolls too..it's conveniently located hence I go..
