The hidden gem of jhb. A quaint, cozy, simply marvelous restaurant with unique and delicious home-made recipes. Inside and outside seating in a beautiful garden. I wish I could eat there every day.

Wow, found a little gem. Could not believe all the yummiest eats. Everywhere, all around you, and reasonable prices. I had the bobotie pie with gravy and ordered another to take home.

A real gem, quaint, no frills bakery, and sit down. An amazing display of delectable treats. Not for the diet conscious! A wide variety of homemade pies with generous and tasty fillings. A definite must.

Popped in this morning quickly as I've driven past there multiple times. Not disappointed at all. Nice variety of baked goods. We tried the Pepper steak pies as well as the chorizo quiche. Really fresh and has a distinctive homemade taste to it. Highly recommend, will be back again.

So aptly named Not Bread Alone but rather on cakes and lovely pastries. I was just in pastry heaven guys. The manager/owner ( not sure which) gifted my friend and I with a chocolate Danish. Oh so delish....on the house! And just because it was our first visit! We both got ourselves the baked cheese cake tartlets and pies for lunch. Can I tell you even more Heavenly. They have a coffee shop as well if you're in the mood for a sit down. Prices are reasonable.

We went to Not Bread Alone for coffee and ended up having breakfast. The inside was warm with a fire going and was filled with people. The coffee was served so quickly - and hot. The breakfast came equally fast despite their being busy. They still blessed my husband with a cupcake for his birthday. Such a pleasant, affordable experience, thank you!

A phoenix rises from the ashes. So much nicer than it used to be at the old location (which was gutted by fire, for those not in the know). The coffee shop has a lovely atmosphere (wood burning fireplace!), tasty food, very reasonable prices! It was extremely busy when I was there, so the service was a little slow, but it didn't detract from my experience at all. You can also take-away sweet and savoury treats, and there is a take-away meal of the day for those who don't have time to sit down.

Nice little Bakery, big on pastry. Their croissants are incredibly good. Picked up a loaf ciabatta and it was really good. Great for takeaways , sitting in not so much, although the delicious all day breakfast menu.. it’s homey and cozy, but lacks the vibrant atmosphere. Will be going back for bread.

Die bakery het die lekkerste eetgoed en ontbyt en sommer alles. Ek moet dit deel met almal. Vanoggend het ons n heerlike ontbyt geeet as gesin. Was heerlik gewees. Toe ons oppad was om te ry kom n vrou Jane v Not bread alone na my toe by kar en vra wat het gebeur met my voet. Ek vertel haar toe sy vra gee ek om as sy vir my bid. Net daar in parkering buk sy en bid v my voet. Ek was so dankbaar dat sy v my gebid het. Dit gebeur nie baie dat mense dit doen. Ek wil net v Jane van Not bread alone se baie dankie dat jy v my gebid het, dit het so baie v my beteken. Groete Anna

Humble beginnings. But not so humble quality. Man these guys do it right! Deceptively excellent.

Best pies in jhb. Honestly we drive from the North to collect churros stuffed with salted chocolate and other treats. You might be shocked that it's half the price of other bakeries and the quality is far above what you get at a Fournos.

This place is just off Malibongwe and had always passed it on way to somewhere else but my friend referred me here .I was greeted by friendly staff and there was freshly baked bread, pies and desserts too! I had difficulty choosing but eventually chose chocolate churros, brownies and chocolate croissant .I really enjoyed chocolate churros and brownies with nuts , croissant was really big.Overall pleased with my short visit here
Lovely pastries and pies. Cute set up too. Easily accessible location, sufficient parking and the service was good. The rib pie is the one!!

What a little GEM of a bakery. Family run with very friendly service. Popped in to get the Cremora tartlets and ended up getting so much more!!! Decided to stay for a bite to eat as tea time was just too far away. I love everything about this place. Food delicious, smells heavenly and service very friendly and welcoming and so affordable,Highly recommended

Fantastic little family-run bakery with dine-in facility. Always chockers over weekends. Best vetkoeke and sausage rolls in town! Pecan nut pies not bad either.

I ordered platters from them and wow, everyone loved them and it was not expensive at all. The quiches and pastries were delicious! I'm not sure about having a sit down meal but the platters and bakery is definitely worth your while!

I live around the corner from you. I have walked to this establishment for years to get their usually incredibly yummy chicken and mushroom pie. I did that walk earlier this morning but was left with a bitterly dissatisfied taste in my mouth. The pie filling tasted awful, it was sweet and just very horrible. I'm very disappointed today.
TheHungryKat
Oh but this place is just beautiful!! Everything is cooked/baked/prepared to perfection! The pies are amazing and made with real meaty goodness! The cakes are divine! But I must say, the blondies, are my absolute favorite! I love the bakery and coffee shop concept and the staff are always so friendly!

I popped in to this coffee shop/ bakery recently for a morning coffee. They have a fairly full breakfast and lunch menu with goods prepared in the kitchen, but I convinced myself I didn't need anything... Then I took a walk around the baked goods which have their own separate room. I swiftly convinced myself I couldn't do without a savoury muffin and it was one of the best I've had. Cheesy herby crusty goodness. There is a full selection of sweet and savoury baked everything from scones and tarts to pie and quiche. They probably do banting friendly too but that seems like a silly option when faced with all their wheaty goodness. Great prices too. Definitely recommended for any baked goods you need.
Chris De Beer
Their home made pie's are great , filled with lots of meat .the pepper steak is always a favourite . Try the spare rib pie , also a must . I always just grab a take away but their sit down menu looks good , will have to do a proper breakfast one day .

What a little hidden gem. Great little bakery - nothing fancy but well priced and great freshly baked goods to take home. Had a cake made for a bday so decided to have breakfast there while collecting. The breakfast croissant was only R35 and the big breakfast R55. Great value. The carrot cake we ordered was delicious too.

Service not the greatest but the pastries are the best! Have been coming to Not Bread Alone for years for their delicious pies and sweet treats. Great for take-away if you're in a rush.

Hidden behind the BP on Malibongwe this place and its pies and various pastries is my soon to be addiction. I havent tried the sit down menu but the quick takeaways from their bakery are hard to beat.
Rozelle Gaie
One of my all time favourites! I'll take any detour that takes me past this shop. 😊 Their pies and pastries are out of this world, and the service makes you feel like you're visiting old friends. I recommend the spinach and feta phyllo cigars and any quiche. You absolutely cannot leave without a custard slice! With so many yummy options it really is very difficult to choose, luckily they are very reasonably priced. A must!

Pulled in here for a very late lunch with a friend and had to endure the most atrocious service ever.

We sat for 10 minutes and no waiter was to be seen and the place was not that busy. Eventually my friend had to get up walk into the restaurant to look for one. The waiter arrived another 5 minutes later holding the menus and seem to be for whatever reason, undecided whether to set the menus down on the table or not! All these was fine with no greeting from the waiter.

We asked for a cappuccino with cream and was rebuffed by the waiter that they don't do such a beverage. My friend who lives close by and a somewhat frequent customer, adamantly insisted that the waiter do it. Eventually the waiter offered a compromise in providing a small ramekin of whipped cream together with our coffees.

We placed our food order and arrived 15 minutes or so later. I had the savoury pancakes with mushrooms and cheese (one pancake, which I had to repeat twice to the waiter as he seemed to not have heard or maybe not interested in hearing my order)

My food was sub-par, with nothing startling about it. So I shan't even waste two breathes about it in this review.

As our experience was severely tarnished my friend asked for the bill as soon as the food arrived, which to no surprise it never arrived. My friend had also finished his coffee when the food arrived and the waiter didn't remove the coffee cup and after some prompting the cup was removed.

My friend popped into the bakery to get some rolls and I got up to look for the waiter to get the bill.

No pen was presented, and the bill had no where to put on a gratuity, not that I was wanting to put anything on because of the horrendous service. At this point, my friend didn't finish his meal and asked for a doggy bag which the waiter brought a round plastic tub as takeaway because there was no styrofoam boxes. And I had to do the "honors" of putting the food into tub at the table no less.

But the cherry on top of icing came when we got home and I was just checking my phone for messages and looked at the message from my bank for the transaction done at the restaurant. I remembered the figure on the bill very well as it was a very round figure. But to my horror, I realized that the waiter had input and charged me a much higher amount!

I do not know if the waiter was incompetent or just out of spite doing that. That will be the first and last of my visit to this establishment.

It's very early on a windy, blustery, winters' morning. I'm on the way to the office but stopped to pick up a pie for lunch. The moment I opened the car door, I can smell freshly baked bread. Probably one of the most inviting smells in the world, that. So I got the pie, and a croissant for breakfast... and a couple of sweets for teatime.

They have a couple of tables and baskets out front with trays of the good stuff packed out. You grab a carton, and help yourself to whatever you want. The place has got such a comfortable feeling, its like you expect Ouma to come bustling out of the kitchen.

If you are looking for good quality confectionery with a home baked feel to it, look no further. The goods looks like they came off the set of the Great British Bakeoff, or Koekedoor. Their ciabatta loaves are particularly good. Not at all like the supermarket stuff, which is really just normal bread with more oil in a funny shape. This is the real thing.

As a bakery, four stars. As a restaurant, I couldn't tell you.

Don't be fooled by their bizarre location.

Quaint little spot recommended for their brownies (so far) and while most people rave about their pies, it should be properly covered for hygiene reasons. Just saying...

After reading great reviews about this bakery, I decided to give it a visit. There's a wide range of pastries and pies available and I settled on some pastries and cupcakes. Prices are reasonable but I wasn't completely impressed with the items I had purchased. Cupcakes were a little dense and not as sweet as I expected but I think that's a matter of personal preference.

Quaint little cafe with a wonderful bakery! We popped in to go buy pastries, but ended up being so enticed by the aromas from the kitchen, that we stayed for breakfast. Brenda Caplen and I both had cappuccinos.. Not a bad coffee at all, but not the best I've ever had. The food, on the other hand, was wonderful! Our waiter was also lovely - so friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back to this little gem 👌🏼

Wowieeee! What delicious-ness as ypu walk through the doors! Situated in such a strange place but after going there with my mom who has been many times I was so surprised!

Best pies, the filling is divine! And then take your pick for a sweet ending!

The products out of this small place are fantastic!

A small little shop not to be missed! Although it looks out over the Malibongwe street, the baked pies and cakes and cookies are to die for!!!

Wednesday morning I stopped in and wanted something different ... I ordered the Breakfast Pie. Individual puff pastry pies filled with mince on the bottom, bacon and cheese on top of that. It was still warm from the oven and deeelish!

My eyes kept on roving over the platters of brownies and cake slices and tarts and breads .....

The owners / managers were all friendly and walked around, greeting everyone. Service was good.

When i used to live in the Randburg area i would stop here in the mornings and buy n huge freshly baked muffin. Delicious!! Brownies are sooo yummy! Their pies are fresh and very tasty. The lemon meringues are a definite must!!! 🎂🍰🍪🍩

Just liked home cooked food - but nicer with no cleaning up to do haha. The meals of the day are amazing value at R35, particularly the beef stroganoff. Very thankful this little bakery is around the corner.

My family has regularly gotten baked treats and pies from this little bakery/cafe.

Their chicken pies are to die for! Absolutely packed with tender chicken in a rich sauce.

I stopped by this afternoon with my mom to pick up so treats for home. I had the chocolate brownie. As usual it was absolutely lovely! We also tried the chocolate and pear tart for the first time. It was so rich and amazingly smooth. The mixed berry pastry was good but not really too much to my liking.

Not Bread Alone is tucked away next to a petrol station in a little centre that I never noticed until I actually tried to look for it. And it was worth the find. Every time I've gone in there is always people either sitting at the quaint little tables or helping themselves to the delicacies on display, which has varied with every visit. The sandwich rolls have probably been the best I've found in a while. The cherry tomatoes on the BLT are so sweet and bursting with flavour, they just make it so much more delicious. There is a wide selection of sweet and savory goodies from nutty brittle to chocolate brownies and everything in between. The pies all have very unique and clear markings that help you distinguish the differences between the flavours. I'm very glad that this little spot is on the way to and from varsity cause it's worth stopping at..

As a Hindu, I often observe religious days whereby I do eat meat and am a total vegetarian. Monday's being one of them. I was rather dismayed when i got to Not Bread Alone to find that their only vegetarian pie was sold out before 12 pm and that there was no other vegetarian fare on offer.
On enquiry I was offered a selection of their quiches ...which I declined. Since when are EGGS vegetables. A quiche is not a vegetable dish.
They do however cater for those on a Banting diet so why not those who do not eat meat ( eggs incl).

Great bakery with a wide variety of breads, pies and other baked goodies. The shop has a small restaurant adjacent to it, the decor of which is a bit scruffy. Service is painfully slow, so don't expect a quick breakfast or meal. Staff are friendly although they need a few more waiters (this might also improve their service). I recommend the bakery but not the restaurant.

I like their pies with their clever little identity shapes - they are truly homemade and worthwhile making a trip from far to the store just for a few pies. I was sad when the Sandton branch closed down - they had great pastries and breads as well
Adele
I saw some good reviews on their baked goods so decided on my way home from work to stop for some pies. This is a must try. Their pies are nice and solid, good quality meat and not drowned in gravy but the flavour was so good. I had the mushroom and steak and my husband had the malay curry (he did mention that it was a bit too sweet for his liking but that it was also just as tasty as mine). Their pastry is so nice. I cannot find fault with this pie. I will definitely be back to try their other stuff, like their baked breads and biscuits and everything that is on offer. I was also greeted by a very friendly guy who assisted me. Oh and at R22.00 per pie, I think it is a bargain having to compare to what you get these days at the retail supermarkets. You cannot even begin to compare. This is made with love and is good quality. Go have some. Besides, who wants to live without carbs forever.

This is a very friendly little neighborhood bakery. I have been here a few times and always choose it when I am in the area.

The decor is basic and the atmosphere is dominated by the bakery vibe and displayed goods with people milling about trying to choose some baked goodies - exactly what you want in this type of place.

I have had pies, croissants, cookies etc here again and again. The pies are especially nice, I like the pastry and fillings a lot.

Will def be back again and again.

Great little bakery!

Friendly owners and staff. Service with a smile. They have an awesome array of pastries, baked goods and breads.

Go early to grab a bread while its still hot. They sell out very quickly over weekends :)

I have never actually sat down for a meal at Not Bread Alone in Linden, but I can really say that they make some of the very best pies I have ever had. The bread and in fact all of their baked goods is excellent. Best baklava I have had outside Greece!
Thembelihle Seruto
Great selection of cakes, quiches and pies to choose from. Weirdly situated next to a gas station but certainly gives it a little chatisma :)
Stuart Hendricks
A lovely, homely feel with the baked goods to match. It may not have the most chic decor but the owners and waiters really make you feel welcome and know what to recommend. They make a hearty bacon and egg croissant, and their cappuccino hits the spot too - great if you want an early breakfast in the Linden/Cresta area.
Kat :)
I love this hidden gem! From the outside, this bakery looks very shady, but never judge a book by its cover :) the baked goods are delectable and fresh and made with love and care.

This place used to serve a feast of a breakfast ( vegetarian and carnivorous options) at a very affordable price , but unfortunately times changed , with a hike in prices ( that is completely understandable ) but the portion shrank to almost half and it seemed like they went cheap on the ingredients too.
The only slightly redeeming factor here is the service , but that's only if you can stand the food.
