Review The Red Chamber - Johannesburg

Quality ingredients, great food, service and atmosphere. We love dinning here!

Authentic Chinese restaurant. I had the Chicken noodle soup. The portion size was massive. Can share between 2 or 3 people at least. Vibe was great. The service needs a spruce up (need soy sauce when Food arrives, need spoons for soups, things waiters should look out for) the resturant was not packed.... but.... I will be back! Absolutely great food and value for money

24.05.2018 After test tasting some good wines at the Kaya FM wine festival that was happening in the mall we needed something to eat. We did a quick stop here, but definitely want to go back again as we only ordered starters which filled us up. We ordered the Sesame toast and the Thin Spring Onion Pastry. Both were absolutely delicious and full of flavour. The staff were all pleasant and helpful with recommendations and a trip down memory lane when we got the bill and received a " White Rabbit" sweet.

This is a Chinese restaurant that stands out with its authentic, traditional dishes. The duck is the star attraction here - served up with a delightful sauce that will have you relishing every bite. But, beware, it's the priciest item on the menu. Still, their noodles and rice options don't disappoint and deliver on quality. For those with a plant-based palate, their tofu dishes are equally impressive. Now, the wine list might be rather ordinary, but the saving grace is the bottled Tsingtao beer they offer, adding a touch of Chinese authenticity to the mix. Now, I must confess, I'm not the biggest fan of restaurants located in shopping centres. Yet, this place manages to break the mould and its location doesn't take away from the fact that the food here is seriously worth trying. Don't let the mall setting deter you!

The food was lovely and the waitress was very helpful in explaining all the different foods and what they contained . The sweet and sour pork was amazing . The chicken noodle soup and chicken noodle stir fry was so tasty and was presented beautifully .

Authentic Chinese food. Those green beans in a garlic black bean sauce out of this world. Can't wait for our next visit. Outstanding!!!!

The food and the service was outstanding in all respects and the ambience is spectacular.I had the great pleasure to be with my very good friend Robin Xu .He and I have been visiting the Red Chamber since its inception and it is a big asset to Joburg!

Went on Father’s Day and even though it was full the service was still very good. The food here is always really good and comes in good portion sizes.

Been visiting The Red Chamber for years! The food is amazing & always consistent. Best Chinese restaurant I’ve been to.

Been going for years, food is consistent and so delicious! They are always willing to make a plan for allergies. Friendly staff, very lovely family that runs it. The prawn dishes are so good, I crave them!

I went for the crab Buffet in July 2019.<br/><br/>Menu:<br/>Spicy Crab Cakes<br/>“Crabstick” Salad<br/>--<br/>Singapore Style Crab<br/>Salt and Sichuan Pepper Crab<br/>Three Flavour Crab<br/>Egg-fried Rice<br/>--<br/>Ginger and Ice Cream<br/>Cost: R 398.00 per person<br/><br/>Even though the price seems high per person it's totally well worth it.<br/>The crabs are quite small but they make up for it with the flavor. The owner is very involved and pops around taking orders and seating people.<br/>If you don't book beforehand you won't be able to attend the event. (it takes place once a year)<br/>The salt and pepper #crab was my favorite.<br/>Not to say that the others weren't good. All the crab meals that they served tasted fantastic.<br/>I had only wanted larger crabs with more meat.<br/>They provide everyone with aprons to eat the crab with.

The Red Chamber is a spectacular restaurant, serving delicious Chinese and other Asian cuisines. I am particularly a huge fan of the prawn sesame toast, which is crispy and has that amazing pop of flavor. I love the dim sum, spring rolls and potstickers. The restaurant makes you feel as if you really are in an ancient temple in some faraway land. I highly recommend this great place to eat.

We have been meaning to try this place for years and today an impromptu visit to Red Chamber. Tucked away in a corner at Hyde Park Shopping center. This restaurant has a lovely ambience and the decor is amazing. Because we weren’t so hungry we ordered a few starters and boy oh boy were we in for a treat. The cucumber salad is quite interesting. The spicy fried green beans were delicious. Next I ordered the ginger fish soup. Unfortunately it wasn’t what I expected and I could only have a few spoons. The owner saw that I was it enjoying the soup and came to ask what was wrong. She offered to make a spicy version for me and when it came back it was so delicious that we polished the bowl in minutes. I was quite impressed by that gesture. Definitely returning to try more!!

Rather lack luster day dinner

The dumplings here are amazing! I ordered the assorted - pork, beef and veggie.<br/><br/>I also ordered the crispy tofu which was quite tasty (like fluffy marshmallow squares) and the crispy chicken, ginger and garlic main with a side of egg fried rice. The food is good but a little bit on the pricey side. Expect to pay at least between R150 and R300.00 for your meal.<br/><br/>Beautiful decor and friendly service. I gave them a 3 star because we requested crispy chicken and unfortunately it wasn't crisp at all :(

We went there with lofty expectations due to the rating. Unfortunately the whole experience was quite underwhelming - service not great - food not great. Don’t think we’ll be back!

Slow Service and cold food! We waited about 15 minutes before our drinks order was taken and thereafter only saw our waiter once more when he took the food order as the food was served by the kitchen staff. The peking duck was delicious but cold, same for the Mushroom with Bamboo Shoots. It was always a favourite but sadly, we won't be going back!

Red Chamber is, in my opinion, one of the best restaurants in Johannesburg. The food is consistently outstanding and the service is always at its best. As a vegan, often it's difficult to find great places to eat with meat-eating family and friends - Red Chamber is certainly the place in this instance. Whether it's a Monday night and there are only 5 or 6 seated tables, or if it's a Friday evening and the restaurant is full, the service remains consistent and the quality of the dishes never waver.
Megan
Great dining experience - premium Chinese cuisine perfect for group family-style sharing, only just a bit pricey (eg. crispy beef @ R105,00 is served on its own, no sides). Owners do their rounds and take special care with their patrons. Good spot all round.
Emma Kayleigh
Starters; Spring onion pastry, crispy tofu and pork potstickers.<br/>Main; Salt & black pepper calamari and firecracker beef.<br/>Amazing, tasty, authentic Chinese food. Great restaurant and ambiance. The crispy tofu was a bit bland, otherwise the rest of the dishes were spot on, the calamari is a must!
Heidi Bantam
Craving dim sum, we decided on this spot. It was fairly quiet so we had our pick of the tables. Service was good and the drinks arrived quickly. We were asked if the beers were cold enough - a first. The soups were flavorful, nice and light. The dim sum and dipping sauce hit the spot. Prices are reasonable too, compared to other establishments.

This rating is purely for the food and NOTHING else.  The crispy beef in plum sauce was very nice, the sweet and sour pork was very nice although the portion was slightly on the small side.  Our orders were taken very quickly by the lady that takes all orders. As for the actual waitress, she was plainly rude, I have never experienced such a rude waiter in my entire life.  She did not make eye contact once, it was like we were inconveniencing her as the restaurant was very quiet and if not busy with us she was sitting at a table herself chatting on her phone.  “We are so sorry that we were there very rude lady it won’t happen again”.  She literally threw every single dish on our table very loudly.  Even my small son was astonished by her rudeness.  When she saw that we did not tip her and could literally see the smoke coming out of her ears. Im sorry I will not tip if I get such bad service from a waiter.<br/>Will not be back ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An institution.<br/><br/>I can't remember a time when there wasn't a red chamber in Hyde park. The fact that they are still there and still pull a crowd should tell you something.<br/><br/>We always get the same thing, peking duck. Its real good and fun to eat.<br/><br/>This time i had a pretty excellent tom yum to start too.<br/><br/>Its reliable, its also quite safe, its where you can take your out of town auntie for dinner cos you know she'll be ok with some sizzling beef and enjoy the drama of it coming to the table.<br/><br/>Ya, its good.<br/>Can't fault it.<br/>Give em a go<br/>Its not cheap.

Tried this place yesterday with my friends after seeing good reviews . When we reached the place was quite busy for a weekday and ambience was quite good . We placed our order and service was fast . The problem was with the food . Sweet corn soup and sesame prawn toast was good but quantity was really less . Spring roll is one of the specialities but it had no flavors .For main course we ordered Prawn stir fry noodles , Chicken stir fry noodles and a lamb dish . Noodles were very salty and didn’t like the taste and the lamb was chewy . We were disappointed as we paid a lot and didn’t get to eat good food .

The food and ambience at Red Chamber are excellent, definitely deserve a 4.0 star review. Unfortunately, we had really slow service and the timings between starters and mains was almost unbearably long.<br/>I would return for the food, but perhaps come at a quieter time

Used to be a treat to come here; went on Tuesday (for 2) - had the crispy beef - what a rip - off ; main meal served on a tiny plate (saucer) - my partner had another beef dish (also a disgrace) - will never go back

I’m not going to waste time : three flavour chicken, home made noodles and some veg. <br/>World rocked !!!!<br/>And can’t wait to be back because my world needs rocking on the regular

If there’s 1 place that serves delicious Chinese food is here. This is a place where you need to come with at least 5 ppl to get maximum benefit of ordering all the favourites! I always over-order but no one seems to complain and just overeats! Peking duck, pork mince brinjal pot, special fried rice, garlic prawns, Golden spare ribs, sizzling beef and noodles. A feast for everyone!

Fantastic meal last night. The waitress was so helpful and informative and helped us choose some really delicious and complimentary meals for sharing. Food was delicious and reasonably priced too. Will definitely be taking hubby back.

Having always held Red Chamber in high esteem, I was saddened to have been served such bland food. Simply did not enjoy one dish brought. And it ain’t cheap.

What can I say...this is top quality Schezuan nosh....we’ve got so many favourites... you can’t go wrong for great quality Schezuan cuisine...

My favourite chinese restaurant in Jozi! Great service, from the waitresses, waiters as well as the two Asian ladies who come around and make conversation. Food is sooooo goooood.. I must recommend the 3 spice chicken. It is on the home, but it really is worth the effort. The Ginger Tangerine Prawns didn't really inspire much in me, however the lamp soup, chicken fried rice and accompanying noodles where amazing!
Teng
We were there at this restaurant a few years ago with our family friends from overseas. At the time I didn't give the review out of sympathy for the lady who was really hospitable. Now I feel I have to do this because I don't believe a rating of 4 is justified especially comparing with other better restaurants out there. For the sake of keeping it brief, I will just say the food is very far from being authentic chinese; the food is not prepared to the standard and delicately enough in which is expected from a restaurant like this; and the taste is very off flavour. Do not be swayed by the nice decor, which in think is really nice, because the food certainly does not stand up to the same standard.

Good place to go for authentic Mandarin food! The spring rolls are amazing and I would definitely recommend any of the chicken dishes. The service is slightly slow but nothing that will ruin your meal
Tammy Sacks
I have been going to Red Chamber since I was a child and the food had never been a disappointment. The dumplings were top-notch, some of the best I have ever had. Followed by mains where we shared sizzling kingklip with fruit sauce, sizzling lamb with spring onion and my childhood favourite , sweet and sour chicken. Stop by Paul’s Homemade ice cream on your way out to make it a night worth out!
Dani California
Heard so many good things about Red Chamber, was incredibly disappointed. The vegetarian dim sum was greasy and heavy. Perhaps we chose the wrong meal from the menu, but won’t be coming back.
Janine Howard
Good food and friendly service. Would recommend for a dinner with friends. The prices are also reasonable and there is a decent wine selection available.
Sumeshnee Govender
Simply love this place. Food is superb, I recommend the Peking Duck. It's ideal for date night because they have some intimate seating as well as groups who want to come together around a round table and share large meals. Portions are big and service is prompt.
Nixie
Wow this place is the best for Asian food. The best is the crab evening they host once a year. I hope to go again.. the service is very good and friendly
Sachin Ram-Asary
We went here specifically for the Peking duck and it didn't disappoint. Good food, albeit a little on the pricey side. Cosy feel to the place. Overall, a good experience.
Smelly Celly
We both found the food really bland and hugely lacking flavour. Although they pride themselves on being MSG free, I've been to other MSG places which still taste great. Was surprised due to the other promising reviews. Maybe it was a bad night?
Shelley Galliver
Had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant for the first time. The service was very good. The food was tasty and good portions. The crispy duck was good, but could do with a sauce - although the menu does stipulate no sauce. Will definitely be back!

The Red Chamber has almost legendary status as one of the finest Chinese restaurants in Johannesburg. From its early days, when it first opened in Rosebank in 1989, until it moved to Hyde Park Shopping Centre in 1997, and then moved to its current premises (remaining within the centre), Head Chef, Emma Chan has maintained her exceptional standard of quality, which keeps her patrons returning time and time again.

I don't think I've ever had dim sum quiet as good anywhere in SA than the dim sum at Red Chamber.<br/>The restaurant is quiet tucked away in Hyde Park, but if you're looking for just an amazing Asian meal this is a must-try. <br/>We were four friends and tried a different meal each so we could taste everything, the sweet plum beef is absolutely mouth watering, the prawns too and they had this vegetarian bringal dish that was rich in flavor <br/>The service is extremely great and very attentive. The managers and waiters are familiar with the menu and give great recommendations.<br/>This probably goes down as my favorite Asian restaurant in Joburg.

Came here for a group meet up. I Was invited by a friend. I inspected the whole menu while i was at work, wondering what I should eat when I get there. The menu is quite extensive. There's a lot going on. I settled on a recommendation from a colleague who's been here previously. <br/><br/>When I got to the restaurant, atmosphere was a bit dull but the waitresses are a friendly accommodating bunch. When everyone had arrived the place came alive. There were a lot of us and we had many orders. For some reason the owner/supervisor decided to take over our table herself and she got quite flustered remembering who ordered what. I am not sure why she didn't use the help at hand. There was a mix up of orders here and there, but eventually we all got our food. <br/><br/>I did not enjoy the beef with plum sauce I selected. It was too crisp and the slices too thin. I felt like I was eating potato chips and not meat. The flavour was good though, just texturally...the meal wasn't for me. I ended up eating some prawn dish which no one had claimed at the table. This was great and went well with my rice. <br/><br/>Generally have mixed emotions about this place.

Love the food especially the Sweet and Sour chicken and great people who work there. Me and my family always enjoy the meals and hope to come again

The Red Chamber is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants around. Although slightly on the pricey side the food is delicious and the ingredients used are always fresh.<br/>On my last trip I had the crispy tofu starter which was delicious and light and for mains I had the 3 flavour chicken which was packed with flavour.<br/>Definitely worth the price for this delicious food.
Leverne Mountany
A stalwart on the restaurant scene. Preferred the old location . Seems a bit out of place in it's new spot . Food still good with a great variety of options. Well worth the visit.

This for me is still the best Chinese Restaurant in Johannesburg. We came for lunch on Friday Afternoon and found the food consistently excellent and very good service. We had Peking Duck, if you love crispy duck skin, this is the one to beat! Authentic hot and sour soup, cucumber salad, jasmine tea. Ive eaten here often and everything on the menu is very good. This restaurant relocated downstairs to the banking Mall in Hyde Park Corner.

7pm on Valentine's Day and I decide I don't feel like cooking. I'm laughed at on the 1st two tries. Third time lucky - I phone Red Chamber. I know proprietor Emma. We go to the same writing group. Did you know she's a published writer (Emperor can Wait)? She tells us to get there after 8.15. Hunger pangs abound. What happens if food is bad? Can I write an honest review? <br/><br/>Did you know they've moved downstairs? In the refurbishment and despite the name, there's not a hint of red anywhere (well - almost none). The decor is absolutely beautiful. <br/>The place is packed. Service is a little slow and the waitresses wear funny bunny ear Alice bands and there're silk rose petals strewn on the tables. <br/>We're obviously in the mood for cucumbers tonight and order both versions for starters - the tiger salad and cucumber salad. Delicious! <br/>Then plum chili beef and ginger tangerine prawns. Sam found the prawns bland but I loved both dishes<br/><br/>To end - jasmine tea, ginger dessert and a Thelema Riesling because it's hard to resist. <br/>R78 corkage for our fantastic 2006 Haskel Pillars. <br/>Honestly - a delicious meal! Go with a crowd and share. The menu is big. Ask Emma for suggestions and she'll keep the food flowing.

Red Chamber puts the "Ch'ī" in my stomach & my soul! <br/><br/>From the first page of their menu, and I quote: <br/>"We are proud to invite you to join us and enjoy the great art of Chinese Culinary Creations. A good meal must attain the harmony of taste, texture, colours and aroma..." this restaurant has won my heart. Especially when they go on to assure you that they don't use any MSG, butter or cheese to achieve this goal AND have a HUGE "mostly vegetarian" section on their menu. A far cry from the sickly sweet & sourness most Chinese restaurants seem to have become!<br/><br/>I ordered the stir-fried Tofu which was soft & silky and caressed by an array of all sorts of crunchy Chinese vegetables and exotic mushrooms 🍄 that I have been dreaming about ever since...<br/><br/>My only point deduction is for the fact that it so difficult to access this restaurant via the shopping center, but it is certainly worth it!!
SamuelandJacinta Pather
Don't understand the fuss about this place. Service was terrible. Food lacked flavour. Ambience dull and uninviting. Two attempts. Never again.

I stopped by at Red Chambers for a meal before my movies this afternoon. <br/>Very relaxed restaurant , less noisy Samiya in the corner , the menu looks so good however I settle to the Sizzling Kingklip with Chili and garlic recommended by one of the waiters and fried rice 🙈<br/>The service was superior as I didn't even have a lot of time before my movie but my meal was prepared fast enough and I had ample of time to enjoy it ... <br/>The food was served fresh and steaming hot<br/>I am obviously not a Chinese food regular water but I did enjoy the meal it had good flavor. The fried rice was absolutely delicious I could eat it alone . <br/>I would try some meaty dishes next time with less onion . <br/>The onion on the Kingklip was a bit overpowering for me ..
Nishela Ramgoolam
Red Chamber has been around for years and it's still good. Favourites include the sizzling duck with spring onions and the sizzling kingklip with chilli and garlic. Service is generally good.
Neeta Raga-D
Bad service, hubby and I waited a long time to be served and I asked for lemon which I never received till the third time I asked, we ordered dum sum they where very average, the chopsticks on our table where dirty. We didn't even make it to the main meal.
Natasha Pinto
Dinner 25/09/16 <br/>I was so thrilled to come across this gem. Absolutely love Asian cuisine and this place is fantastic. <br/>It was a Sunday so the restaurant wasn't busy. Service was good. There was no feeling of being rushed and constantly irritated. <br/>Food however was super fantastic. Our table shared an assortment of starters and we all ended up picking from each others mains. If you are a dumpling fan this is the place to eat them.<br/>Just to name my top picks would be the fried green beans, tofu, cucumber salad, sweet and sour pork and infused prawns.<br/>Brilliant food and if you have space order the fried banana for dessert!<br/>Will definitely be back soon.
Russel Roth
The service was OK, not too organised as no one knows what is going on , including bringing us the wrong order then waiting almost 10 mins for our waitress to address it. The food however was very good , fresh and tasty , the beef stir-fry and the crispy beef excellent
Bulbul Shrivastava
Was attending a work dinner so was not able to look at the menu. Plus someone ordered for the table. Amazing service to the extent where the restaurant may have accommodated for a pure vegetarian (i.e. no fish, chicken or eggs). The spicy veg soup is a must try! The servings are filling and prices speak for the quality of the food. Please just ask the waiters to smile a bit more.
Kineshea Pillay
A truly wonderful experience! The service was great, we were always seen to but not in that invasive way that makes you uncomfortable and shy to even finish your meal.<br/>The wine was great! The food was so delicious. It was a retraining of my palate that helped me to truly appreciate food in simple yet complex forms. Every bite was a new experience. One of the best meals I've had this year. Jonathan Theo Naidoo and I would definitely put this on our list of places to come back to and enjoy again.
Kyla Meyerson
If your taste buds are craving the tangy tunes of tasty tofu (or any other Chinese dish for that matter) then this is the place. The crispy seaweed crunches and crackles in your mouth until it dissolves. I also recommend the sizzling kingklip, cucumber salad, duck pancakes and monks dish. They even give out birthday gifts so be sure to say it's your birthday!
Jonathan Theo Naidoo
Red Chamber is a fantastic place to experience chinese cuisine. From the starter's to the main the food was cooked to perfection and the taste was outstanding. Each dish had its own distinctive taste and didnt have that "chinese-take-out" way of making almost everything tast the same. I really recommend the dim sum. Kineshea Pillay can vouch for me on this one.
Anthea Chittenden
This could be the best Chinese food outside of China! Savoring pots of Jasmine and Oolong tea. Starters were Dim Sum which literally means "to touch your heart" and they did just that. I could've eaten them all night long. The Spicy Veg soup is also recommended. What amazes me is how their vegetables are superiorly tender, crunchy and sweet. Nothing is too greasy and just the right portion size if ordering a variety and sharing. Our fab waitress "Fortune" took good care of us with runners tending to any empty plate. The table for two can be cramped but lovely if on a romantic date, booking is essential for weekends, toilet facilities are a trek as shared with Hyde Park movie house.
GinaB
Amazing food, good wine selection, take friends and have fun. Private booths make the experience more enjoyable. Didn't feel rushed during the 3 hours there. Will go again.
Amanda Dovey
We have been going to Red Chamber for many years and it's somewhat of an institution in Jozi. Dinner last night was as far from low carb (rice and noodles will do that to a meal) but it was a worthy treat! Highlights were the fried pork dumplings, Peking duck and butter fried prawns. I didn't try the fried banana with ice cream but apparently it was a hit. Well worth a visit if you haven't already!
Ian
Authentic Chinese food. Some slight localization with individual portions and peppery hot and sour soup. But overall, very commendable food by the Taiwanese owners. Decent wine list too with many served by carafe
The Pretoria Explorer
I was actually at a meeting in Hyde park and caught a quick bite. Understaffed but pleasant experience. Good was good. Had a chicken noodles which was quite fresh, however if you'd love to have a Chinese experience please go for the double crispy fried chicken... 👌
Tilana Piranha
Delicious!!! The crispy beef with plum sauce is insanely yum!!! My favourite starter is the crispy seaweed OMG its so good!!!! Service was great!! Loved it!
Prawphet
Wow. Such a great place. I don't know why I haven't been here earlier. But it's never too late. Tucked in a corner in the Hyde Park mall, this place welcomes you with friendly and attentive service. The owner is always there overseeing the proceedings and interacting with guests, offering suggestions and being hands on. That makes a huge difference.<br/><br/>The food is great. We had the crispy seaweed with cashews (awesome) and sizzling kingfish with fire-cracker beef. Wow.<br/>Ended with a dessert which for the life of me I can't remember, but it was something chocolate and divine.<br/><br/>Great service, great food and great aura about this place. This is what most restaurants lack. They go for the clinical approach of technical food and service but sometimes you also need a little heart to run a restaurant. Emma has that in loads and that's what makes it special.<br/><br/>Will definitely visit again.
Catriona Campbell Pereira
Really disappointing. We were huge fans of this establishment but the food completely lacked flavour on our most recent visit last weekend. A real pity!
Lynn Pretorius
What a lovely evening. Another one of Emma's famous Crab eat as much as you want evenings. We started with crab cakes and crab salad. For mains we has 3 types of crab and had to get down and dirty. Was lovely. The berry tart at the end rounded off a wonderful evening and countered the richness of the crab.
Daniel Wiggill
Emma s Johannesburgs institution has been around for decades... Even though the locations has changed over the years and let's be honest. Hyde Park screwed her with the new location. The food and service has and Im going to assume will always stay the same. Service attention but not amazing. Food truely out of this world. <br/>I sit back remembering being a young primary school kid ordering sweet and sour pork and pork dumplings... And Emma changing my order to expose me to differnt dishes. <br/><br/>Dishes you should always order is the fried seaweed with cashews and off menus orderig tofu in black bean sauce <br/><br/>Ignore the crap location and go enjoy a great meal<br/>
ML
Always enjoy the Red Chamber restaurant!! Quite pricey but good quality food!! <br/>Sometimes it lacks a bit of atmosphere but good food if you love Chinese food!!! Highly recommendable
Saltnsas
The Red Chamber is a hidden gem on the bottom level of Hyde Park Corner. Their food is authentic and full of flavour. My favourite thing on the menu has to be the crispy seaweed, crunchy and sweet, it is a fantastic add to any meal. I also love their sizzling kingklip. I think my favourite thing about this place is being able to share and taste many different dishes with fellow diners. Those round tables with their lazy susans make it so easy to interact, discuss and engage with the food and family.
Lynn
Delicious food. We over ordered and left feeling very full indeed. Peking duck 'pancakes' were very special. We were giving instructions on how to roll them and what to add. Also enjoyed the sizzling kingklip and the friend banana for desert. It was a real treat of an evening
Cdawg Dubya
Good reliable place. It's always good value and nobody leaves unsatisfied.<br/>Thus restaurant had a number of particular specialties but have them as table choices.<br/>Some seriously fulling meals but a great meal all round.
Likecaramel
Simply amazing! Management was very accommodating and set up a table of 15 for us, and timed meal prep so that we were all served at the same time without too long of a wait, very impressive. While the restaurant decor and setup are both lovely the restaurant was quite hot and could do with some air conditioning. In terms of meals the shredded duck and coriander soup was a fast favorite, as were the beef slices tossed in ginger, garlic and chili. Their teas are also definitely worth a try, and they sell them in store too which is an added bonus. At the end of a fantastic evening the manager, who realized we were celebrating a birthday, surprised the birthday girl with a small silk bag, a birthday present from the restaurant, which I thought was a great touch.
Annemarie Meintjes
Dolci Cafe, Craighall Park<br/>Yeah! A Brand new Breakfast Place in our suburb with a great lunch menu too!<br/><br/>Boiled egg and Soldiers, Anchovy Toast and Salmon Carpaccio. Memories of a perfect childhood and a Taste of Italy.

The standards seem to have dropped since they changed premises in Hyde Park. I think So Yum is a far better Asian option in the centre. They have been around for a long time but something seems to be missing. The food is not bad, but there is no atmosphere.
Travis
My favourite restaurant in Johannesburg. The sizzling beef and sizzling kingclip are delicious. I also recommend the spring rolls and bowtie for dessert.
Nadine
Not my favorite - it has little to no atmosphere and food very average - their move in the centre seems to have compromised atmosphere and quality - I also don't like the strong "fish" smell.
Kevin Simon
The Red Chamber is my favorite Chinese restaurant! The food is exceptional and the service is fantastic! I give it 4.5/5 because the vibe of the restaurant is not as good as it used it be before they moved. Other then that, The Red Chamber is the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa! I would recommend it to everyone!
Kristia Van Heerden
It can be hard to find good Chinese cuisine in Johannesburg. Red Chamber in Hyde Park is not your average MSG-laden, deep fried, sweet-and-sour Chinese joint. The decor is tasteful and toned down and the atmosphere is surprisingly intimate for a restaurant in a mall. The menu is extensive and kind to vegetarians. The cucumber salad with chilli and sesame oil is quite tricky to handle with chopsticks, but worth the embarrassment. The crispy tofu is light and fluffy, with a comforting crunchy breadcrumb coating. I highly recommend the vegetable and tofu dish for a vegetarian main. The vegetables are perfectly prepared to retain their colour and flavour, and the tofu soaks up the wonderful aromas. The service is attentive and friendly, the wine list considered and very reasonably priced. This has to be on your to-do list.
Bronwills
Yum, yum, yum! Red Chamber is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Joburg. They offer all the classics that you have come to expect and they serve the best Peking duck in Joburg! The restaurant is let down by their service which is lackluster- service clearly isn't a large priority. But the food is good enough to forgive the lack of service. It is not going to be a cheap job get out, so I wouldn't recommend it for your weekly Chinese take-away if that's your thing but definitely worth it.
Paulo Carmo
A little bit to noisy and confusing but still a very decent peking duck. Service is a little bit slow in the beggining but then the pace is good. Avoid peak hours.

Think I went there 8 years ago and was nice to go back. I was a bit surprised by their new venue, very modern but still a relaxed vibe. <br/><br/>Service was efficient and very friendly. <br/><br/>I had the sizzling prawns with garlic which were delicious. I could have had more. On the down side the rice was dry and cold not so great for a Chinese place. <br/>My wife had the salt and pepper calamari which was also very tasty. Think serving it on raw torn up cabbage is a bit 1980's. <br/><br/>Nice place, that needs you to order a lot more and share with friends.

A really nice authentic Chinese meal - try the spicy brinjal it is cooked to perfection, the pork pot stickers are an absolute win as well! Unfortunately the new location (still in Hyde Park shopping centre) has left the restaurant with less charm than its previous spot! However looking forward to trying out their new venture at PRON soon!

Been to Red Chamber many time and the food is fantastic. Never oily, always tasty. Excellent service. Brilliant duck and the sizzling kingklip is a winner. Might just be the best Chinese outside Chinatown.

#nowords !!! Still revelling in the afterglow of the BEST Peking Duck I have eaten since I was in Sydney in 2007 ! <br/>Service 10/10<br/>Starter - the owner made us Prawn Wontons as this is not on the menu - #newfact you can purchase Gluten Free Wheat Flour in China Town - on the list !!<br/>Mains: we shared the Peking Duck ! Perfect ! <br/>Bottle of wine and a cappuccino !<br/>Bill was R600 - so reasonable considering the location .....<br/>So going back ! <br/>❤️❤️❤️

The restaurant was busy, good atmosphere. To my surprise they only had a set menu. They adjusted the size portion smaller for one person. The food was average. The best was the lemon tart dessert. I wont rush back.

A second visit in as many months confirms that Red Chamber is consistently great. The environment could use warming up a little (harsh Lighting and hard surfaces), but the food is excellent. Cucumber salad is simply delicious (lightly bathed in garlic, sesame oil, chili and soya sauce). Salt and pepper squid was bouncy and crispy and even the stir fried vegetables with crispy tofu carried the wok "hey" or breath of the wok that's the mark of superior Chinese cooking. Service is friendly and efficient. Red Chamber is pricier than your local takeaway place but so much better!

Authentic mouth watering Chinese food. The Red Chamber has been around for ages, the proof of why is in the food itself which is delicious. There is nothing healthy about this place, and there shouldn't be! It is far more than your normal Chinese food experience, every dish is so flavorful and the staff take good care of you as they know the menu well. It is very hard to find any authentic, upper class Chinese food in Johannesburg, but this restaurant does offer authentic food that is set in a nicer atmosphere than other Chinese restaurants (I certainly wouldn't call it fancy). Go for the food and ultimate Chinese cheat meal - so worth it.

This is a very trendy restaurant in Hyde Park, and they specialize in Chinese cuisine.  The decor and ambiance is not of your typical Chinese restaurant, the food is, but also not the price.  You can try this restaurant if you like Chinese food, you will hardly be disappointed in the food or service.

Great service and great food. Maybe the service is too good. Had waiters and the managers continuously interrupting us to see if everything was OK. Very polite great atmosphere

Maybe we were not lucky. We ordered egg fried rice were all sticky together and Pekjng duck was so dry and hard ( it should be tender and juice, sweet bean sauce and pancakes were good.  And sweet and sour pork doesn't taste good at all.

A trendy and upmarket Chinese restaurant.  Chinese food is Chinese food, and this restaurant offers nothing more, nothing less.  They have a few advantages over other Chinese restaurants:  they are well-situated in Hyde Park shopping center, they have a very classic and warm ambiance, the food is good but pricey.

Peking or angry duck ... a must! The wine selection is limited. Service is very good. Upmarket authentic Chinese cuisine. Great after movie dining.

The new Red Chamber offers the same authentic Chinese food at the highest quality and most delicious flavours, but with a more relaxed and casual feel to the old venue. Chinese food at its most delicious and freshness - a wide range of wines and friendly, attentive staff make for an all round fab night out! A true legend of a gem in the Hyde Park Shopping Centre. KevFabFood can highly recommend the unusual, yet delicious Duck and Coriander Soup and the classic Sizzling Beef! Enjoy...

I luv the Red Chamber. Especially luv their special events evenings. The prawn one is really good with very different ways of serving prawns. However my absolute favourites is their crab evening...one of the highlights of my eating calendar;-)

The Red Chamber is one of our local hang outs when the boys gather for an evening together. The food is always impeccable and the restaurant looks very inviting for any Asian cuisine fan. A personal favourite is their Sizzling Beef with Spring Onion as well as the Beef Chow Mein.

It's nice. They have a pretty green wallpaper. A nice fish tank. Friendly staff. Fast service. Funny manager/owner. It's good. Food is nice. I would come back.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in town. They have been around for ages and the food is always fresh and tasty. Beef in plum and chili sauce is always my favorite. Service is also good with friendly and helpful waitrons. Will be back!

Extremely average food, not great service, won't be back in a hurry ( or at all ) quite dark and dingy inside and actually over priced for the quality of food.

What an exceptional meal! Although pricey, it is definitely worth it. Well prepared food, great service and amazing ambience. A definite must!

BEST Chinese food I'm sure in SA - every dish I have tried is exceptionally tasty - find it a bit difficult to communicate the  waitrons as many of them don't speak English very well..

The food is amazing especially the sweet and sour kingklip and the chicken and corn soup. I have yet to finish a whole meal, as the serving sizes are ample. It's pricey but we'll worth it. Book in advance as they are always busy.
