Review Dosa Hut - Johannesburg

Keith Reddy
I’ve lost count the number of times that I have visited Dosa Hut and this is owning to the fact the food is just impeccable. Dosa Hut is situated in the heart of Fordsburg’s busiest streets which can be intimidating. Parking can be an issue. The restaurant is rather small and can become crowded and noisy which leads to having to wait for space but it’s every bit worth it. They specialise in all Indian cuisine with South Indian cuisine the main focus. The Dosas are a hit and a must eat along with the Thali. The food is always fresh, tasty, flavourful, spicy but not over the top (you can ask for hotter variants) and all round simply scrumptious. A must visit when you are in Johannesburg.

The area is a bit sketchy to some but the food really makes it worth the trip. Really authentic South Indian flavors. Crispy masala dosa, flakey Kerala style paratha, chettinad spices. The list will go on and on. Spice level just medium so that you can still taste all the complexities of real South Indian cuisine. This restaurant will stay on my list to visit again and again. And I did visit again and again, mostly for the veg items. The masala dosa is so consistently good. The Kerala style paratha I had on my last visit was excellent as well.

Great food at a great price and also good service. Recommend the masala dosa, tattu dosa, onion uttapam, masala fried fish with Kerala paratha, Butter chicken with the chilli and garlic naan, Chicken Kondattom, Onion Pakodas, South Indian special tea and also the Bombay crush. Generally, everything on the menu is of a high standard for a reasonable price. I have to note that upon my last visit, there was a new menu with some price changes. Of particular note, the mutton bunny price changed from R85 to R115. I love their bunny BUT i cannot in all honesty recommend same at that price. As a Durbanite, who has been eating bunnies all my life, I have never paid (nor should you pay) more than R100 for a quarter bunny chow.

Love love love this place. The prices are also not bad at all. Love this place. The fresh juices is something u won't get anywhere else. It's original and unic in its own way. There is too much variety on the menu. Chicken 65 was awesome. Lamb karai was good. Chicken tikka was amazing. Best butter chicken I ever ate. 😋

I love their food , honestly one of the best indian and more specifically southern indian food resturants out there. The masala dosa is a must try

Good food and servings are generous. If you have kids ask for something mild because all that we ordered where hot. It's a very unique blend of spices that one does not commonly taste. Appart from our wobbly table the service was friendly and accommodating.

Absolutely delicious South Indian food, the flavors are amazing. I don't normally enjoy cauliflower but the Gobi Manchoorian was so good. Just the taste of it with the naan was divine. Loved the pani puri, paneer dosa and Uthappam. We also tired the bombay crush, which was very nice. The masala wasn't strong like I normally like it but that's my own preference. Prices are reasonable and staff are friendly. Would definitely recommend trying Dosa Hut out for an authentic food experience.

Best Indian food in jhb! The food was so delicious 😋 definitely visiting them again.

Wonderful good. The place is really busy and we had to wait awhile but the food was worth it. Parking is horrible.

Excellent service, accompanied by good food, lovely place for a family get together.

Ordered takeaways last night. 4 pieces of bite sized lamb in the Palak and the chicken ordered was just 3 pieces in an almost inedible sauce with minimal flavour. Chicken seems to have been precooked and then added to the sauce. A small tub of unrecognisable liquid and violently food-coloured green substance to go with a mediocre dosa. By far the absolute worst Indian food I've had for years. There was just not one saving grave about the meal, so much so that I won't even give them a second chance to redeem themselves

Simply the best curry in Johannesburg. A friend's mother is an Indian food chef in Paris and she told us that the best curry in Johannesburg is at the Dosa Hut - she was right. When I want to eat good curry this is where I go without thinking twice. No alcohol is served here but drink a Bombay Crush - it's better than any alcoholic beverage. :-)

Fourways Branch Dosa Hut - Tasty and quality indian food, in a rustic but warm setting. Dosa, milkshakes, paneer dishes recommended, with much more offered by menu. Friendly and enthusiastic waiters and management.

I’ve only been to this restaurant once, my boyfriend and I shared a Masala Dosa, which was very cheap but absolutely delicious. We ordered 2 curries a butter chicken and a lamb korma. I wasn’t very impressed with the curries, the butter chicken had an odd taste that I wasn’t used to and I didn’t like the quality of the lamb meat. Despite the disappointing curry, I must add that the Naan bread looked fantastic and tasted even better, one of the best I’ve ever had! In addition, the service was excellent, we had a fantastic, conscientious waiter, that was very friendly and made us feel at home. I will be going back in future to try the other options on the menu!

Best place to have food in fordsburg. Authentic South indian cuisine. Be ready for a long queue on Saturday and Sunday lunch time, but worth a wait.

What an amazing experience!<br/><br/>The fam ventured out to Fordsburg to try the scrumptious chows at Dosa Hut and it's by far the best Indian food I have tasted (beside home cooked off course).<br/><br/>Starters: We created a little mini buffet with eggplant fries, pani puri, lamb samoosas<br/><br/>Mains: fish thali, lamb thali, chicken tikka, chicken and prawn curry and 2 other curries<br/><br/>The Bombay crush was so so so divine and perfect in this heat.<br/><br/>Dosa hut....we cannot wait to visit again.

Dosa Hut does amazing masala dosas. This time I tried their chicken lollipop with Kerala paratha and it was very tasty with the mint sauce. Their prices are also very reasonable

Even though this is in a part of town that I would not visit at night, it is still the most amazing Indian food around. Authentic southern Indian food and wow the tastes are mind blowing! Gem of joburg

What a great place, good variety of food. Service was great. Food is amazing drinks is very cool. A must in fordsburg. Their house special fish curry is a must.<br/>
Food 🍔💛love🍟🧡
We planned to go for weekend dinner. As I am an South Indian I love eating parotta. Whenever I go I order only this kerala parotta with some curry. I order karaikudi lamb. I really enjoy eating his combo. Lamb is so tender. And it's exactly like our origin taste. And side we order tandoori chicken. It's like kinda hard some pieces. But the masala is fresh. So not wow factor. But it's OK. Ll<br/><br/>I like the service waiters are so humble.
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
Had their masala dosa and paneer and cheese dosa. <br/>The dosa is very impressive. <br/>The constant busy vibe gives it a similar feeling to be being in India.

Excellent dosas, great South Indian Thalis as well as very tasty chilli paneer dry and gobi manchurian. Consistent taste makes you come back for more

Pakistan, India... Fordsburg<br/><br/>Fordsburg is like the hub of "Africa" and as we all know it's definitely the hub of the "Sub Continent".<br/><br/>Walking around you can see the different nationalities mixing and with no issues....hear the different languages, see different cultures and experience the different foods... it's just amazing.<br/><br/>Hygiene standards are very visible, when deciding where to eat or what to eat....be careful.<br/>Look for running water...I'm serious it's an issue in this area.<br/><br/>Then there is parking, have you ever wondered or been exposed to driving in India...Well try driving or parking in Fordsburg and you will get a taste of what it's like to drive in India.... rules? What's that!<br/><br/>A country with 29 States, can you just imagine the variation of foods...that's just India.<br/>Now add Pakistan to that, so its plus 4 States.<br/>19 + 4 = Fordsburg! (That's just the Sub Continent)<br/>In S.A. we have Durban curry and Gauteng curry, just the two and we all know the variations around.<br/><br/>So park your car at the Oriental Plaza and walk a block up to... The Sub Continent! (Peace of mind)<br/><br/>Dosa Hut<br/><br/>In the middle of all the chaos is this little shop. A friend got me into trying this out and well...guess you only live once ;-)<br/><br/>Where is it...Shop 6, 48 Central Road, Fordsburg, Inner City, Johannesburg<br/><br/>What is it?<br/><br/>DOSA (noun)<br/>(in southern Indian cooking) a pancake made from rice flour and ground pulses, typically served with a spiced vegetable filling.<br/>Dosa is a type of pancake from the Indian subcontinent, made from a fermented batter. It is somewhat similar to a crepe in appearance. Its main ingredients are rice and black gram. Wikipedia<br/>Place of origin: India<br/>Main ingredients: Rice, Black lentils<br/>Region or state: India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Singapore, Malaysia<br/><br/>...can you see what I mean! Defining this dish to a region is crazy... btw bunny chow is proudly S.A.<br/>Why not.... in the 1800's Indian wives had no way of packing their husbands foods for them to commute on the trains to work. So a trend started and yes in Kzn, wives would take out the centre from a loaf of bread and presto...serving curry made easy.<br/>Proudly S.A.<br/><br/>Back to Dosa Hut<br/><br/>Now that we know what a Dosa is... My friend and I ordered two totally different Dosa's as we had never seen one or heard of it before.<br/>The restaurant is pretty much like a cafeteria set up.<br/>The Dosa concept is food in a rush... whilst sitting there we noticed some amazing dishes come out the kitchen and they looked incredible.<br/><br/>So our choices:<br/><br/>Firstly something to drink... BOMBAY CRUSH!!! If you not had this, best you re-think your life drinking decisions... This is pure magic in a glass.<br/>Dosa Hut have mastered this...and not only is it super cool, your Bombay Crush changes colour as it's volume decreases... that brought out the kid in me.<br/>My friend told me I had that look on my face that she remembered seeing on television when that child fills up his toy Ferrari with Sasol petrol and the car starts, wheels spinning and takes off....that was the look I had on my face...."Super cool!"<br/>That description takes all the praise away from the strawberry milkshake that was one of the best I ever had...<br/><br/>Food???<br/><br/>We were over hearing all the patrons and to my surprise the accents were British. That made me wonder...wonder why foreigners are here but South African me has never been here!!!<br/><br/>The "Brits" ordered this amazing platter it seemed to be bits of almost all the dishes and looked phenomenal....that I need go back and try.<br/><br/>Well my meal as the Paneer Dosa and Lamb Dosa... common your at Dosa Hut!!! It's Dosa or bust...<br/>Really is an experience you will never forget, the Dosa is very unusual...yes like a pancake but the texture is very different. The filling makes it even more mind blowing.<br/>I must say the trays they serve the food in is classic...<br/>It's a silver tray that so reminded me of the Elvis classic "Jail House Rock" and my entire sitting I had the feeling that a Bangra song was going to play and Bollywood dancers were going to appear... alas I am strange.<br/><br/>Highly recommend this place for the experience, Dosa Hut... it's what you make of it.<br/>I loved it...<br/><br/>Tel: 061 300 8946<br/>Mobile: 071 147 4811<br/>Email :dosahutfood@gmail.com<br/><br/>That not be mine<br/>EatLovePray with me....<br/><br/>

Probably more a 3.5. We’ve been here a few times and the food is consistently tasty with generous portions. Our go-to’s are the veg thali, the rasam, mushroom curry and masala dosas. I also like their sambar vada and parathas as starters. I’ve had the bombay crush on more than one occasion and enjoyed it. The masala tea is also a winner. <br/><br/>Service is slow and it’s probably because of how busy the restaurant is. As far as I know they don’t take reservations however take aways are possible. <br/><br/>The toilets really need an upgrade and I for one dislike its proximity to the dining area. <br/><br/>Parking can also be a nightmare as it’s on the street and in busy Fordsburg, you have to be very patient to find a spot. <br/>

Whenever I have asked about authentic Indian food, I am always recommended to try out Fordsburg, so today that is what we did and at the top of our list was Dosa Hut! <br/><br/>I am going to start this review with the fact that this is not a fine dining Northern Suburb establishment, but rather one that serves authentic South Indian 'street food' at incredibly affordable prices. What you see is what you get and I actually like their unpretentious take on all things Indian. For example, my lamb bunny chow today set me back an astonishingly low R58 and the portions were huge! <br/><br/>Location:<br/>We already knew from our research that parking is tricky in this area, and instead opted to park in the safety of Oriental Plaza and then take a leisurely walk through the streets to the restaurant for our meal today. The walk really gave us a feel for Fordsburg and the culture of the area which I loved, however, would not recommend opting for this walk at night. <br/><br/>Service:<br/>We were served by Alice, who was friendly and helpful. The service is definitely not quick and the restaurant busy, so this is not the place if you are in a rush or looking for a quick meal. We were however in no rush so happy to settle in and enjoy the afternoon. <br/><br/>Food:<br/>Hot hot hot! My bunny arrived with a fiery, red sauce that really had a kick.<br/><br/>Dosa Hut is of course famous for one thing.. their dosa's. Dosas are a type of crisp savory pancake that became very popular with the rise of udupi restaurants and Dosa Hut has over twenty one (21) dosa's to choose from! <br/><br/>*Recommendation: If its authentic South Indian cuisine that you are after, Dosa Hut is a no-frills experience for the taste buds..<br/><br/>For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

Long queues. We had the masala roasted dosa, paneer dosa, masala dosa. Which were all amazing. Although I enjoy the ghee is the masala roasted dosa filled with potatoe. The homemade pineapple juice was refreshing and their special South Indian tea was divine for R10. <br/>We also tried the butter chicken with garlic naan. Delicious. The area though is a bit dodgy. Parking is stressful.

Good range of South Indian and North Indian dishes....I do find the chefs a little heavy handed with the oil..but I guess that’s what makes it so tasty. Overall worth a visit.

A few weeks ago my parents tried Dosa Hut in Fordsburg for dinner with some friends. Tonight my boyfriend and I decided we needed to give it a go. It was phenomenal, everything from the service to the food exceeded expectations. It is also extremely well priced and the portions are substantial. We both had the chicken tikka masala. <br/><br/>It really is a gem of place.

Dosa Huts Popular Tawa Lamb was ordered medium spicy, though it was served Hot. No regrets though it was lip smacking delicious as well as the Rogni naan.<br/>The only downside was the miserly meat ration <br/>Chicken bunny - Ordered medium spicy as well.<br/>Very unique flavour, gravy soaked in well as a good bunny should, However No Wow Factor.<br/>Reservations crucial for popular supper times <br/>Be prepared to wait for your meal, though the friendly staff constantly keep you updated.<br/>

The food was delicious, it had lots of flavor and spice. The service was fast and staff super friendly. Tough to find parking at the location. A must try if you looking for authentic Indian cuisine. We had the prawn & chicken curry, paneer makhni curry, and naan bread. For dessert, had a Bombay crush drink and it was absolutely tasty, plus side it was made with ice-cream.

This was so delicious. Our first time at this well known legendary establishment and we were blown away. The dosa was of epic proportion. We'll definitely be back. Best bunny chow in Jhb.

01.10.2017 I've been wanting to try this place for a very long time having heard from friends how great it is. Unfortunately I was not as impressed. I expected a smallish eating spot, but it was a Sunday evening and relatively busy. Service was really slow and no enthusiasm from the staff. The food was ok. Not mind blowing. I ordered the Chicken Dosa and my Chicken was clearly cooked separately to the sauce as the Chicken was cold yet my sauce was hot and filled with way too many leaves for such a small portion. The flavour itself wasn't too bad and was a bit spicy which I liked. I Didn't enjoy 2 of the other 3 items on the dish. My friends also ordered various Dosas / Curries / Noodles and we entertained ourselves with the happenings in the restaurant since the staff were on their own mission.<br/><br/>They have a big variety of food, so it does make it difficult if you like various Indian food. So maybe if I ever do try them again will opt for something different.

Dosa speciality restaurant veg and non veg. Decor is basic. Atmosphere- could be better. Location - fordsburg just off the busy street. <br/>Quite a large menu. Food is freshly prepared, and tasty , portion sizes are adequate for their pricing. Service is good .

WOW! I can not believe how much this restaurant has improved since I've last been there in 2015. The food was everything from spicy , crunchy , delicious and a melt in your mouth type of moment. The service was up to standard and staff friendly. A must try for a lovely night out and Indian cuisine.

This was my first time trying Dosa Hut. We were a party of 10. The food was excellent. Ordered the cheese and paneer dosa, the butter Masala dosa, butter chicken, chicken tikka, garlic naan and butter naan. The butter chicken was exceptional. Staff were very friendly and quite efficient. Will definitely be back.

Food is amazing! Everything we ordered was full of flavour and spicy but the good spicy. Genuine south indian cuisine. Took my mum in law here and she was amazed by how good south indian food can be. Will keep coming back here.

We had recently been to Jo'burg. We stayed in the downtown area at the Reef Hotel. This was a hotel nearby to hence we wanted to have Ghar ka food.<br/><br/>The place is situated in an Indian locality called Fordsburg. We went there 3 times in our trip & tried different Indian cuisines. We loved the place & enjoyed South Indian , North Indian & Mughlai food.<br/><br/>My recommendations for the place are : Veg Biryani & Gobi Manchurian.<br/><br/>

Very good food. Chutney could be spicy for children. <br/>Dosa was incredibly tasty. <br/>Decor is simple. What rules is the taste.<br/>Quick service and many options to choose from.

Service was pretty standard, waitress could not explain the food properly and chef was not available too. However food was fantastic, more than met expectations and this would be a guaranteed repeat. The paneer thali was divine, Gobi 65 was excellent and we tried a lamb Madras masala. Table was not very clean but place was busy and had an average vibe.Jerusha

Dosa Hut in Fordsburg is a go to restaurant for evening snacks to afternoon lunch. Everytime I go to Fordsburg for Indian groceries shopping I visit the place to eat Paneer 65 and Gobi Manchurian dry. These are the best snacks to start with along with Mint Lemonade. Paneer gravies are nice for mains and if you like South Indian food then order Uttapam. I loved masala Uttapam as it gave the feeling of Aaloo parantha. Dosa is nice and so is idli and vada. Try this place for sure. Cheers

There dosa is a must try. It takes you back to India and brings back memories if you a dosa fan. A must try if you in Johannesburg or coming to Johannesburg.

Perfectly light, crispy dosas, with a really good coconut chutney and sambar. I was also really excited to have the pani puri, and they very nearly lived up to expectations. Not bad, though I missed the usual tamarind sauce.
Mikhaela
The food was absolutely amazing! I along with my family ordered the prawn biryani, lamb biryani, masala dosa, Kerala parathas and a Bombay crush( rose flavored pink drink with falooda seeds)
FatCake101
First time round at Dosa Hut, was suggested by a friend. Out of all the foods we ordered the Dosa's were the best, it was crispy on the outside with that warm taste of mashed potatoes on the inside. It was also quite filling! The name of the restaurant says it all.. the surrounding area may seem a bit dodge but the restaurant itself is quite fancy and the service is also good.
Gemma Northing
I was on the hunt for a good tasting Dosa. Recently visiting Dubai I was exposed to the delicious fermented mouth watering pancake. I was craving that taste.. I thought I'd give this place a try and it exceeded the expectations. The potato dosa and refreshing mint and lemon drink really hits the spot. This place seriously is a hidden gem.
Leverne Mountany
Even though it is in a dodgy area of town the best Masala dosa's in Joburg. This unassuming place is a hidden little gem and the fragrant curries delightful !

Food is always good. The dried fried mutton , dried fried crabs and the Gobi 65 (cauliflower) are a must have. They are all starters but are extremely satisfying.

After reading a few conflicting reviews on this place i decided to give it a go.<br/><br/>Like who is going to pass up on an opportunity to try a new indian restaurant? well definitely not me. <br/><br/>Now it was a spur of the moment type of venture, i was really feeling for some hot indian cuisine and i didn't want to go to the guys in my area as they are firstly waaaaay to expensive and their food isn't the greatest. so i thought why not give this place a try. And that was that off we went all the way from fourways to fordsburg at 5pm on a wednesday afternoon. <br/><br/>First thing to take into consideration is the parking. there is not much space anywhere in fordsburg and even at 6:30 on a wednesday evening we had to park around the corner. <br/><br/>The place itself is not half shabby, its actually quite nice, the decor is very traditional and i really like the tiled area where they make the naan. Very friendly staff and the guy standing at the entrance was very welcoming and had a nice smile on his face which already made the drive worth it. <br/><br/>I asked for the hottest item on the menu which they said wa the karaikudi chicken curry, and then one order of the obvious choice THE ONE, THE ONLY , BUTTTTERRRRRR CHICKEN..... i judge places on their butter chicken,  and then some naan bread. <br/><br/>The wait can be tormenting and like any indian restaurant you the food takes a while to prepare, but i have to say its worth it. <br/><br/>We got home to warn curry and naan, and the first thing i must say is DAMN THAT KARAIKUDI CHICKEN IS HOOOOTTTTTTTT!!!!!<br/><br/>Absolutely delicious, the karaikudi was amazing, all those spices and the chicken was cooked to perfection although this might be too hot for some i really enjoyed it. The butter chicken was phenomenal. wonderful flavours all round. <br/><br/>The naan bread was fresh and soft. the only complaint i have is that the dishes didn't come with rice or any carrot sambal but again i was stuffed after the meal and the prices are very competitive compared to other indian restaurants. <br/><br/> if i were to recommend an indian place this would be it.
Hein
Love it, been in India a few times and Dosa hut surely took me back. If you have been in India you will appreciate Dosa hut. Would love it if they play Indian music. Dosa hut will definitely see me again

Despite reading quite a few bad reviews about the level of service at Dosa Hut, we ventured out to Fordsburg on Saturday lunchtime to check the place out. It was a abuzz with locals and the owner/manager welcomed us warmly. We ordered the mixed veg korma and the mushroom curry with naan and rice and the food was DELICIOUS! Not only that but it arrived promptly and nothing about the service we experienced (or saw around us) was as bad as people made out. Perhaps things have changed for the better but nonetheless I would highly recommend the place. Friendly, helpful staff and someone in charge who took control of his restaurant and made you feel at home. We would definitely go back as we want to try their famous dosas next time!

I heard so many people raving about the Dosa hut in Fordsburg, so on our way to JHB we decided to make a stop at this south Indian restaurant on. Saturday afternoon. They place was buzzing loads of people. I found the lighting in the place to be very dim and dark. We ordered our dosa and this huge roll arrived. It was great and I enjoyed it alot, I'm not a big dosa fan but this was decent. The service is not very efficient as we waited quiet a while for our food. The only thing that put me off was the toilets. They were totally disgusting and my table was right next to the door.

We found our way to Dosa Hut, Fordsburg on a Saturday afternoon. <br/><br/>We were really looking forward to a South Indian dining experience. The restaurant was busy and the ambience was pleasant. <br/><br/>Our waitress was polite. However, the service could have been more efficient.<br/><br/>We had the masala dosa, veg thali and signature chicken biryani. The dishes were tasty. However, the chicken biryani was a bit dry. <br/><br/>Their fresh lemon mint juice was delicious and refreshing....perfect for our warm weather.

Dosa Hut is an institution of authentic South Indian street type quick meals in the heart of Fordsburg. The much raved about food is absolutely delicious and meals are reasonably priced for an establishment such as this. The interior has been kept up to date and prides itself from its flagship meal the Dosa with its delicious variations. <br/><br/>It's only major downfall is it's extremely poor service which is the reason for its dismal rating of 1. If you ever wondered why you tip a waiter at any restaurant or questioned the relative ease of a waiting job, Dosa Hut waiters demonstrate perfectly what 100% failure looks like, making you appreciate any type of service you have received in the past in the restaurant industry. <br/>Waiting for a table is understandable given its popularity as I'm quite a fan of a highly talked about restaurant for its authentic flavors, which adds to the hype of the experience. <br/>Once seated a waiter is non existent and in fact you would have to force the manager to serve you after 20-30min of waiting. After orders are placed the timing of drinks, starters and mains comes through in reverse but I guess there hasn't been adequate training or processes put in place that allows for smoother flow to customers. There's also no rush in settling the bill with the manager adding it up manually in cash invoice book and hoping he gives it to your waiter. It's just a royal mess of service but alas you leave the establishment very fulfilled from a meal perspective. <br/>Note: ensure you have about 2 hours to spare and a lot of patience before you attempt to patron this restaurant. Not sure I would frequent the place but I would want to try other meals on the menu however I would have to had this service experience erased from my memory before trying it again.

I'd heard good things about Dosa Hut and decided to give it a try for the first time today...well, location isn't the best as it's in between many other little shops making it easy to miss and parking is a mission on a Saturday afternoon but goodness - the food is well worth it. Firstly, there was a line outside to get in - always a good sign. After waiting for a little bit, we were seated - I must say at the outset that this restaurant is not one to go to for atmosphere or the best service as such (service is not bad though) - seats are quite close together and the bathroom area is tiny (I do personally think that is all part of the experience though, lol). Anyway, the food was amazing!! Mostly delicious South Indian food on the menu. Everything was so good. The prices are good for the quality of food. Of course, the Dosa is amazing - quite big, light and delicious! My entire family enjoyed their meals. Would definitely be back. What I'd call a hidden gem! :)

Been here twice - the first time i had a lamb thali and it was amazing and the second time i had three curries(cettinadu lamb, karakudi chicken curry and prawn masala) with garlic naan and plain dosas.. It was amazing - best south indian joint for sure

Came here for my first dosa experience. I was quite happy with the meal. Portions are generous (the meals are served in trays, never mind plates) and even though most of the offerings are vegetarian I felt that they were enough. There are a few chicken dishes on the menu but the vegetables are king in this little restaurant. There isn't much seating though, I'd recommend a takeaway.

If you're looking for authentic indian cuisine, this is the perfect place. Cosy setting with an open kitchen. Friendly staff and is always consistently busy. I'm always one to play it safe i.e, always pick food I am familiar with so I can only speak for their dosa and mutton dishes, one word - delectable.

After office had come for grocery shopping to fordsburg and came across this restaurant.<br/>There was Indian food and that's what my friends wanted.<br/>So we went in and ordered for a 1 gobi manchurian, chicken biriyani. 1 veg thali and yes 1 cheese dosa and mango lassi. Being in dosa hut we could not afford to miss out on dosas. Though we comfortably started gossiping after some time we realised it has been 30 minutes and we still did not receive a single item on our order. After about 40 mints we received all the food except the thali. The hobi manchurian was properly made but not very noteworthy. The cheese dosa and chutney was very good . The chicken biriyani was very spicy and had 3 big pieces of chicken and the quantity was enough for 2 persons. Though you cannot compare it with the biriyani we have in India it was quite tasty.<br/>The thali was also quite good . The mango lassi was a bit sour which I myself did not prefer.<br/>Overall a decent experience. If you happen to come by you can try the dosas and rice items here. They are really good.

So in the spirit of Eid, I thought a review of a Halaal restaurant would be in order this week. South Indian food is not very available in Joburg, so it was really nice to get out to Fordsburg with a group of friends to try something different. <br/><br/>Overall a very affordable evening accompanied by trying new dishes (Dosas & Parathas). The mild curry was really hot though so be warned. The service was below average and really needs attention. Not a bad evening but there is much competition in Fordsburg!

Great food, but don't be fooled going to Dosa Hut and think you will receive good (if any) service. <br/><br/>Set in the heart of Fordsburg Dosa Hut is actually one of those places you have to go and visit - the food is really good! It is just such a pity that you feel like you are doing them a disservice by walking into the place. The staff/owners are uninviting and borderline rude. When you look past the cold demeanour of the staff you will have a delicious meal.<br/><br/>A definite if you want to try something different and authentic.

Holy cow I have found curry and dosa heaven .... Really nice restaurant with a relax and casual ambiance , service is fast and always with the smile , the food is what really makes this restaurant worth the drive , this is the real stuff , with my eyes closed I was back in Goa .... Highly recommended !!! 🌶🌶🌶
Hot Or Not
Yummy crispy dosas, fast service . We tried masala dosa, cheese dosa and cheese and onion dosa. All made to perfection. Sambar curry could be improved though. Will visit again.

A friend of mine brought me here for an authentic Indian food experience - and that was exactly what I got! We ordered a variety of dosas to share and even though I have had a lot of Indian food I have never tried a dosa! It was delicious! The flavours and fillings were amazing. I will definitely be back.

Rather a disappointing experience at Dosa Hut Fordsburg for Saturday lunch. The Dosa was much too crispy and the chutney's were weak and watered down. The Masala tea was really good though.

Friends said I should try Dosa Hut for good dosa as I keep complaining that I have yet to find a place in Joburg that makes dosa like the ones I've had in India. We were there with friends for lunch during the week. We ordered pani puri and the chicken 65 for starters. The pani puri was awesome and had a nice kick to it. Did not enjoy the chicken 65 as the pieces used were not of good quality, it did however have nice flavour. Onto the dosa, I ordered the masala dosa. I was disappointed, the filling lacked flavour and was definitely not what I expected. Guess the hunt for tasty dosa in Joburg is still on.

A cheap and nice restaurant serving great authentic Indian food. Recommended for Indians traveling to SA and locals who want a taste of Indian cuisine.

Fantastic place to have South Indian food.<br/>Ambiance: Average<br/>Food Quantity: Average<br/>Food Quality: Good<br/>Service: Good<br/>Location: Dangerous<br/>I would recommend this restaurant to Indians in SA

Although one is spoilt for choice when it comes to Indian cuisine in Joburg, South Indian restaurants are a rarity. South Indian food tends to be spicier and more akin to Durban cuisine, as opposed to North Indian food which is usually cream or yoghurt based. As an ex Durbanite myself, I much prefer the former.<br/><br/>Dosa Hut is one of my favourite South Indian restaurants, it's simple and unpretentious compared to its Northern suburbs counterparts but you'll be hard pressed to find better food. Dining at DH is as authentic an Indian experience you'll find in Joburg, with the dosas being prepared on a sizzling flat-top right at the entrance.<br/><br/>Other than their signature dosas, I highly recommend trying a thali. DH is one of the few restaurants that serves thalis, which is a delicious assortment of curries, accompaniments and even dessert, all served on a single tray. Do pay them a visit, you'll soon be a fan too.

We were actually meant to eat somewhere else, but my wife wanted to grab a dosa before we went to the other place. As fate would have it the place we were going to have lunch was next to Dosa Hut, and was actually closed down and there was another restaurant in its place. For starters we had Pani Puri which isn't quite like India but it was close enough to be enjoyable; some Chicken 65 which had loads of flavour just a little dry; and some chilli chicken dry which was a little peppery for my liking. For mains I ordered the garlic naan and some lamb chops masala. The chops where tender but over powered by all the sauce in the dish. Overall a decent place to get a meal in Fordsburg.

A real gem in Fordsburg. Unique food, welcoming atmosphere and one is able to get a good meal for a good price. Recently it has been revamped and it looks a lot neater but the prices are just as good.
Shinaaz Roberts
I loved the food, fresh, wholesome, unpretentious and tasty. What you see, is what you get. We tried the vegetable, chicken and lamb dosa. I couldn't get enough. I had to stop myself from shoveling mouthfuls of food into my face, it was just so delicious and great value for money. The decor is eclectic but don't let that put you off.

Found myself here with a few friends a few weeks ago as my brother was craving dosa's. We all ordered different meals and then tasted the variety, we had the vegetarian thali, butter chicken, Gobi mamchurian and egg dosa. The thali was disappointing and the egg dosa had absolutely no taste, the other two dishes were lovely and the milkshakes we had were also some of the best I had tasted. Service is slow but not that bad. Will be back for the milkshakes

We've recently been going to Dosa Hut in fordsburg and really enjoy their meals. The new restaurant is a lot better than the old Dosa hut. Their dosas, curries, lassi and masala tea are all very tasty. I would definitely recommend Dosa Hut if you're in fordsburg.
Fayaazb
Treated work friends to a rather embarrassing and awful lunch time out. Foods was stale, and the dishes was nothing my but meat cooked in tomato gravy.

Dosa Hut has great food at such reasonable prices. Their vegetarian dishes are delicious and such friendly staff. Their newly decorated place looks relaxing. I will definitely take my family back there.

On the suggestion of my sister - we decided to go to Dosa Hut for the first dinner of the year. We chose a wide selection of items to get an idea of the food here. To drink: mango lassi, Bombay crush, badam shake, chocolate milkshake and supper: masala dosa, paneer dosa, chicken tikka masala, kerela chicken, rasam, butter naan etc) . The food was good but not the best Indian cuisine I ever had. The masala dosas were good and the chicken tikka masala was flavourful. The butter naan was fantastic. The menu was very extensive and I don't often find places with russo on menu. The drinks were great (really enjoyed the mango lassi) and the pricing was awesome for the portion sizes. Will definitely go here again to try the rest of the dishes.

When the northern suburbs of Jo'Burg close its shutters during the festive season, those of us that remain here through till new year are forced to venture into territory not on the usual hit list.<br/>Fordsburg seems ignorant of their northern neighbors as the same hustle and bustle exist even in this period! If you're looking for the 'safe' option Dosa Hut is the obvious choice as it is one of the Eat Out top 500 restaurants. Great food and service which leaves the lingering tingle for more. But maybe on the next trip venture away from the 'safe' option and explore the bounty of Fordsburg.

Had the <br/>#vegThali contains #Dhall #BananaCurry #SourDhall #Raso #roti #sago all really really really tasty. Reminds me of Durban. <br/><br/>#FishCurry seriously Divine. They dont use tamarind like a typical durban fish curry. But I think its better.<br/><br/> AND #ChilliBites comes with a nice chilli sauce.<br/>The staff are very well acquainted with the menu and readily assist with interpreting the menu.
Wendy Verwey Bekker
We had excellent curies and butter naan. Friendly service and very reasonably priced. Great selection of food and I can highly recommend the masala dosa.

Not sure how to write this since I got sick the next day ! Well I have been wanting to come by for a while ... So I tried the place and was pretty shocked by how lovely the decor was for a fordsburg restaurant needless to say I was here for there famous Dosas and well they where just needless. But the best thing was there Marsala tea.

This is my local curry spot which I absolutely love!<br/><br/>Food = excellent<br/>Their dosa's, naan bread and currys are delicious! I usually struggle with a sore stomach in the mornings after a night of rich curry but since finding Dosa Hut I'm left with a very happy stomach in the morning. <br/><br/>The staff and manager are awesome and always recommend the perfect meals for me.<br/><br/>Definitely my no.1 curry spot in Jozi!<br/>

To whom it may concern.<br/>I would like to place an order for a function I will be holding on the 5th of December 2015. My clients want strictly halaal food. The order is for 300 people. The dosa hut in fordsburg is a real taste of India. From dosa to biryani they have it all. We enjoyed the masala dosa a lot. The portion size is great and is really affordable and tasty. In this heat the lemon mint juice was refreshing and complemented a lovely Indian fine dining treat. A real must for Indian food lovers which is easy on the pockets

Amazing discovery in the Johannesburg downtown! Authentic dosas and South Indian food. Ended the lunch with nice South Indian tea and filter coffee. Deserves appreciation! Our search for good South Indian food seems to be on the right track! Service could have been better though.

South indian food at its finest in Johannesburg. Love everything on the menu. Ghee roast dosa , mint lemonade.<br/>A must is the Kerela paratha with chicken curry. This place never disappoints. Always friendly service with great prices. Love the the latest facelift.

Dosa Hut has yet to disappoint. I have spent many Sunday evenings there trying out different dishes. Got to a point where I have the manager's number, so he can prepare the food if I am coming in late or need a takeaway. Their service is amazing, and so is the chicken briyani, or lamb korma. I know their speciality is dosa, but the other dishes are definitely worth a try. The price is right, so you have the option of experimenting at ease. That lemon mint drink is a staple of mine, even with the take away. Absolutely amazing.

As someone who enjoys South Indian food, I get my regular fix from Dosa Hut. The restaurant has just been revamped and looks much better than before . The food is good. My favourite dishes are the masala dosas, the idlis and the vadai. Prices are reasonable too. And as far as drinks go, you have to have the mint lemonade and the badam (almond) milkshake.
Robertsen.orrock
Amazing service, even more amazing food, this was my find of the year in Fordsburg. You don't have to know a lot about curries manager is happy to suggest exciting dishes, I say go with whatever he suggests. Such a happy place

Another fabulous meal at Dosa Hut and their derive puts some top class restaurants to shame with the entire group getting precisely what they ordered without the entire restaurant hearing what we ordered. <br/><br/>This time around I had the Paneer dosa which was fantastic and the lime/ mint fresh juice was tasty and refreshing. <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>This was my first visit based on recommendations from fellow zomatoans and friends. <br/>Dosa Hut exceeded all my expectations. We had excellent attentive service from a waitron who new her menu as well as very tasty yet affordable Indian cuisine. The same dishes would cost us more than double their...

This is a great place for a delicious meal! Paper thin crisp dosas that melt in your mouth! I've been going to dosa hut for a few years now and have never been disappointed! Must try the foot long dosa special on the weekends... It's awesome!<br/>Also great indo-chinese... Must try!

A friend who has the same avid interest in food let alone Indian food introduced me to Dosa Hut. As adventurous as I am with food, South Indian cuisine is not my cup of tea. It was worth a try. The jury is out on whether I'll go back.
Picky Glutton
Being a true South Indian, i just drool over dosa's and they have to be nearly perfect to suit my taste buds. While at joburg i really craved for home made dosa's (kind of you get in India) and my search ended at Dosa Hut, while we were doing our weekend grocery shopping at Fords burg ( you get Indian spices only at fordsburg :D)<br/>Apt to its name, dosas are authentic Indian, crispy and yummy served with coconut and tomato chutney (Indian substitute for sauces). I also relish their chicken chettinadu and madras chicken.<br/><br/>Ambiance is just simple with no decor, however who cares when you get amazing  and authentic food. This is the kind of place which you visit just for food.

The great thing about eating out in any big city like Joburg is the huge variety. Dosa Hut is the very epitome of the breadth and depth of the Johannesburg culinary scene. <br/><br/>Situated in the heart of bustling Fordsburg, Dosa Hut is as authentic as it gets: right down to the metal serving trays. It's completely without pretense, or considering its gully halaal, alcohol, but don't let that stop you. When it comes to the most phenomenal, light, fluffy dosas topped with delicious curry, it's simply has no equal. <br/><br/>A must visit.

We visited Dosa Hut again after a few months. It was nice to see that the decor has been improved and it's looking very good. The food was excellent but service was a little slow and inconsistent. It's still a great place to have a great meal.

Dosa hut was a nice experience, staff n food both ws luvly. The restaurant ws nearly full on Friday yet service ws excellent. We orders Cheeze Dosa Gobi 65 as starter. Which ws vry nice. Sambar taste ws as good as a typical South Indian sambar.<br/>I even tried Chinese fried rice n Gobi Manchurian. It ws luvly as well.<br/>If any1 wish to taste south Indian sambar in South Africa. U need to go to dosa hut n try it there.

As the name suggests, dosas are the specialty at Dosa Hut, but you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. There's a huge selection of vegetarian dishes, great masala tea and lassis and generous portions. Don't expect any frills, but that also means you're unlikely to spend more than R100/head.

I went to Dosa Hut this afternoon with my son for a late lunch, based on the good reviews. My son and I really enjoy Indian food and have often enjoyed restaurants in Fordsburg, so we don't mind the +- 60 km round trip. Upon our arrival, we enjoyed the fresh, clean ambiance of the place.<br/><br/>To drink I ordered a Badam crush and my son a Bombay crush. My son was happy with his, and my Badam crush was also very good -- only problem is that my tiny straw could not handle the size of some of the crushed nuts -- they were too big, resulting in me having to suck blow suck blow every so often. I thought that a bigger straw would have helped until I saw the size of some of the asteroids in the shake. I have not experienced a straw that size so the problem must lie with the nut crusher.<br/><br/>The waitress was friendly and the manager also swung by on a few occasions. There was a bit of a language problem -- it appeared that english was not her home language, but the manager came to her assistance on a few occasions.<br/> <br/>My son ordered the Butter Chicken (his favourite) and, as we had never eaten there before, I asked the waitress for a recommendation as to the most popular dish. She indicated that without a doubt it was the house specialty: "Fish Fry Masala". Between her and the manager it was explained to me that the fish was Red Snapper and that they only had large ones -- it was priced per weight and would cost R150-00. I asked about the other specialty, "Kappa Fish Curry" but she indicated that it was not available, so I opted to try the fish fry. We also ordered Butter Nan and Rogni Nan as well as ghee rice.<br/><br/>When our food came, my son tucked it and largely enjoyed his meal, which he indicated was not too spicy -- the way that he enjoys it. The fish was served on a platter adorned with sambals, as well as a side of chutney. Texture was interesting: crispy / crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Some parts were really dry, others were good. Flavour was lacking somewhat -- I really expected it to be spicier. It was not bad, but I was really expecting more.<br/>I noticed that the inside of the fish (close to the bone) was still raw (pink and bloody). I pointed it out to the waitress, but I am not sure that she understood. All I wanted to do was to get her to tell the chef so that next time he could cook it correctly (slower and less heat), but I do not think that she understood. Soon the manager swung by and I explained it again to him. He offered to put it on the fryer again, but by that time I had already eaten some and did not want to send it back to the kitchen -- I told him that I would eat around the pink bits.<br/><br/>The Nan breads were adequate, as was the Ghee rice. Nothing bad but nothing really special either. I have been to other places like Bayleaf (and some in Laudium -- even in Hatfield Pta) where the Naan is ultra fresh -- I guess that I have been spoiled.<br/><br/>So altogether, my son was reasonably happy, but I felt that my own meal was lacking in wow factor -- for a specialty, I would expect it to be perfectly cooked and perfectly spiced -- what are specialties for otherwise?<br/><br/>I guess that I would have been better off with a Dosa.

Dosa hut is probably one of the authentic South Indian restaurants in central Johannesburg. It is located in Fordsburg an area overwhelmingly dominated by Indian restaurants. But Dosa Hut will variably impresses you. The South Indian dosa's, idli, uttapam - plain crepe like food but with a mixture of rice and pulses along with spicy and bit of sweet sambhar, and coconut chutney is a must to start with. If you would like to get something to drink you could share it with mango lassi - sweetened yogurt. By now you must be full, if not try to go with indo-chinese blend of Gobi (cauliflower) fry or manchurian. You will be pleased with the crunch of these foods. <br/><br/>But if you think you are going to get finger chips type food with Brinjal chips on the menu you will be utterly disappointed. It is pieces of brinjals experimented with deep fry. Difficult to slow the seeds while eating.<br/><br/>If you plan to eat for dinner then must try thali - atypical south Indian plate full of curries and rice. Or else biryani is good! South Indian cuisine is known for its ground spices. They are spicy yet delicious with mouthful of variant flavours. Tasting a south Indian food is a treat to self. Dosa hut is Dosa hot and Dosa hit.

Most interestingly tasty coffe and the butter chicken and Naan bread was outstanding. We also enjoyed the lamb curry ....the seating was little uncomfortable but the restaurant was clean and the service was quite efficient and relatively quick. A pleasant e pertinence all round

Amazing, delicious, finger licking south indian food.<br/>If you are a south indian food fan, then this is the place for you.<br/>Malabari chicken, ghee dosa with madras chicken is my personal favourite.<br/>Actually everything here is just too good.<br/>Have also heard the sea food here is amazing though havent tried it as i dont eat sea food, but whatever i saw looked delicious.<br/>deserts too are very good be it gulab jammun or pysum....its just awesome.<br/>YUMMMMMMMY is what I would call this place

The restaurant is split into two. North India and South India. The southern side seemed to be the most popular, because it was super busy and fully booked. We went next door to the northern side, which was definitely different. The decor was fancier, and it was very calm and quiet. Family vibes, where next door was loud and quite vibey. Anyways, I really enjoyed my prawn curry!! The service isn't amazing, but the staff was super friendly. They were just a bit slow. The palak paneer was ok, but not as good as it could have been, which really bummed me out. It was kinda oily :/ anyways, overall I had a good experience. I definitely wanna go down south (next door) next time I go.

Soooo bad! Man, the food was such a flop! Really bad for fordsburg, I must say. Stay away. We ordered a navrattan veg curry and a channa masala. Both were really bland and terrible. Service and ambience were on the same level, sadly. Not quite sure how it got such good reviews. But finally I would just say that it really needs to improve all round
