Review Momo Baohaus - Johannesburg

Caitlin Joy Muhle-Hees
A beautiful little hole in the wall in Greenside. The food was served quickly and was really nice. But there were soo many options on the menu that weren't available. So I had to change each item I wanted to order to something else and they weren't serving dessert? The service in the beginning was a little slow and he left while we were still ordering our items. The drinks were spectacular. The atmosphere was pleasant, quiet and peaceful. I'm really disappointed that the food items were advertised on the menu but not available to order. Overall nice spot for lunch as long as you are open minded to the options.

Had a great time. We went for a quiet dinner on a Wednesday evening and were not disappointed. Flavour of the food was so good especially the Korean fried chicken wings and the Chairman Bao. Only order the Turkish delight lemonade if you're into really sweet drinks. Lucky Bao was a bit dry, but had a nice sweet and smokey flavour. Overall a good experience. I felt the prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. One could order only from the tapas menu and not be disappointed which is what plan on doing next time I go there.
Kent Salmon
One of our favourite local places. The food is always great and their prices are reasonable in comparison with other restaurants. The Turkish delight lemonade, ribs, green beans, edamame beans, firecracker chicken and chocolate tart are our absolute favourites.
Rani Govender
Wide variety of Asian dishes, our food was tasty, decent portions and well presented.Dessert buns served with salty caramel was delicious. No alcohal is served however you can take your own and no additional surcharges. Restaurant is clean and has an intimate atmosphere.Prices are reasonable. Parking at the back is convenient.

Really nice place. The food was amazing. They have unique drink choices and a variety of teas. Can definitely recommend. Parking is a bit challenging though.
Ashtride Ramdas
One of my favourite places to eat! The food was incredible, especially the baos! This place can get busy so come early before it fills up. Great service and atmosphere, an absolute gem.
Lisa Ebbeling
The food is lovely, and so unique. Very, very tasty sushi and edemame beans. It's a little dark inside, and I wish our waiter had been a little more attentive, otherwise it's a great place!

Having tried Momo Roku the other day, our insatiable craving for Momo was still there so we decided to try Momo Baohaus. I haven’t been here since they opened. Although some of the OG items have been removed, the food was still of the highest standard.
Claudia Meek
Delicious food, great atmosphere and fantastic staff. The venue is vastly improved by the recent addition of soundproofing on the walls and roof. Some of my favourite dishes are the salmon tacos, the fried tofu and the baos. Don’t forget to bring your own alcohol- there is no corkage fee!
Luke Jasper
Such an amazing restaurant, food was delicious with all sorts of traditional dishes. Drinks such as homemade ice tea were really good. Portions and prices for the meals were excellent. The sushi is out of this world! Overall an excellent experience for food.
Mandi van der Walt
Great food.. So many flavours packed into one bite, can recommend this for anyone who likes food. Cafe style interior with a nice vibe and you can take your own wine at no charge. Vegan and vegetarian friendly.

super cute restaurant. food was great even though the spicy isn’t as spicy as one would hope lol. it’s halaal and there’s parking nearby :) 4/5 stars, would eat here again.
Nabeel Cassim
Warm friendly staff, the Sushi was terrific! Really on another level, it made simply asia and J&S seem as if they don't know what sushi is. Secondly, the BAO. wow just, wow!! Magical stuff, they make awesome beef and lamb too! I will definitely visit again.
Aisha Moolla
Like all momos, the food is generally on point. Love the boa for sure. The flavours are always really complex but well balanced. Service was wonderful and the food arrived relatively fast
Brandon
Terrible service on 2 separate occasions now. Waited over an hour for a simple Boa. Can’t under stand what the problem is. Letting the whole brand down
Bongani Mculu
The sushi is ridiculously good
Tahlia Sheik
Food is absolutely amazing. Couldnt fault a single dish.

•Colonel Bao at @momobaohaus ‼️Dancing tastebuds were definitely the order of the day🥟
Razia Bey Stoffberg
Great food! Awesome choices.
Michaela Kupsamy
Momo is a great date night restaurant with authentic, tasty Asian food.
Sabeeha Dawood
Nice setting, service however could be better. Some waiters seemed to just want to get done with the sevice and may come across a bit rude but I don't think that was the intention. The quality of food was definitely great- especially the dim sum and sushi. I hate the Cantonese bau(forgot the name) with brisket. It was good. The ambience was okay, it wasn't full as expected at lunch time.
Michael Burger
Saturday lunch for two, we were told the credit card facility is broken so cash or snap scan only. We waited an hour (53min) for our Bao, eventually paid for starter and drinks and left not having Bao.
Ghost
Simple flavorful food. Love the Fire Cracker Chicken. Great Service.
Khosi Hlongwane
Definitely worth the hype. Amazing sushi. Nicely lit place with a very chilled ambience. What’s also great is that they allow people to bring their own alcohol. Pretty darn rad.
Afzal Khan
It was just okay. We spend around a grand ordering almost everything to taste. It was not good. Not value for money, no dish that would make any of us go back
Atoz Photos
Poor service. Asked 3 times for additional lemon wedges and was then brought a single wedge. Plates taken away before food completed. The worst Momo experience to date. Will not return. Care-less staff. Food ok.

Great food
Good atmosphere, took our own wine as there was no liquor licence at the time (not sure if its changed since). I was so looking forward to trying my first Ramen Bowl but was disappointed as it was not what i had expected - maybe an acquired taste??? Was envious of my cousins who'd order Bao buns which looked amazing!

Dreadful place, but then most of the establishments in Greenside are

A lovely spot with beautiful interior decor and design. The veggie spring rolls were crispy and delicious. We also shared the lamb bao buns which were good except that we found quite a bit of fat which was not pleasant. The bowls are always yummy so no complaints. For dessert we shared the chocolate tart with pistachio ice-cream and also the deep fried buns with caramel sauce. The ice-cream was phenomenal but the tart crust was thick and dry. The buns were yummy but not spectacular. The biggest letdown was the service which was incredibly slow and our plates weren’t cleared for ages. We will go back, it was good but not out of this world
Chloe Johannes
The food was a disappointing and not what I expected considering all the rave reviews. I regularly travel in Asia and I must admit that I was expecting the food to be tastier. Nonetheless the place has a nice vibe to it.

Hmm - I looked forward to coming because I saw the high rating in Zomato but the food was pretty bland and the service wasn’t inviting. I won’t be returning.

What went well
- staff is efficient
- food comes quick
- decor is modern and minimalistic

What didn’t go well
- waiter wasn’t friendly - not a single smile.
- I had the duck bao. It was overwhelmingly sweet - lots of sauce, mayo (this was disappointing) and the duck meat itself wasn’t very much flavored. The bun was light and fluffy, though.
- no alcohol - looks like it’s BYOB with no corkage, though.

Had a great Dinner tonight. Delicious food especially the Baos.Great service from the waiters and expectional and outstanding service from Genius who came several times to check on us
I Eats The Foods
The food was amazing. The bao is absolutely delicious and the bowls are superb. The service however is not the best. We were served by three different waitresses and when we asked for the bill, it never came. Frustrated we got up to pay at the till and still stood waiting for someone to help us. Service such as this might have been understandable had it been a busy day but there were only 5 other tables and 4 waitresses.

Short , sad story ... went there for dinner , after a long waiting they took us to the table , the table was still dirty from the previous customer , after many many tentatives to call a waiter and more than 30 mins with our table still dirty and full of rubbish we decided to leave . No one came , no one cleaned , no one gave us a menu , no one ask at least for the drink . Nothing else to say :(
Foodies.and.Coe
Fantastic all round evening. Excellent service on a busy friday night so we sat at the bar with no problems. The food is fabolous and with so much to chose from, it's hard to make a selection. I highly recommend the baohouse bao and the mai thai sushi.
Smelly Celly
I adore this place! All their branches are wonderful. You can bring your own wine without corkage. The baos are delicious (actually everything is) and the service is great!
Danielle Pike
Food was absolutely amazing, just took awhile for it to get to the table. The bao nuns were the definite must have of the night. The chicken Tokyo bowl and ribs from the tapas menu were also great.
Chantel Bellora
I was really disappointed in the meal and service
The salmon was water locked and tasteless
The wonton prawns were over cooked and the potstickers were tasteless
On the positive side the sushi and boas were great.
The service was very slow and we had three different people serving us.
Sarah Herrington
Lovely, quirky ambience and delicious food that is good value for money. We started off with some delicious sushi, which was fresh, and I was glad to try some more unique flavours in their sushi rolls, one of which was even accompanied by a curry sauce. Most of us at the table tried their baos - my one was the deep sea bao with tempura prawn. It was delicious and full of flavour, and my prawn was crispy and cooked to perfection. Service was great, and no corkage is quite a bonus in terms of cost saving. Will definitely return for more tasty Asian food at such reasonable prices.

Everything you order is superb must try the bowls as well as the crispy calamari starter service impeccable and fast and friendly staff . Highly recommended for a great meal .
Marius De Lange
Absolutely excellent, great food, swift service and great vibe! Dreamed about those fiery green beans the night after and the firecracker prawns are a must-try, you won't regret it...

Stunning lunch at Momo. The calamari was one of the yummiest I’ve ever had and the Bao the best in Johannesburg. The menu is varied and exciting and there was something for everyone. My only gripe is that none of the dessert tarts on the menu were available for lunch, otherwise flawless meal.

Heard of Momos for a while and finally made a visit.
Usually so busy, a reservation is required. We made a visit in the off-peak times (2-3PM on Saturday).
There is nothing spectacular regarding service, which was prompt, although not exactly attentive, especially with the layout, its rather difficult to get your waiters attention if she was chilling by the bar.
The decor was typical: metal coloured chairs paired with wooden tables and modern hipster lights.
The food though... extremely tasty.
From the Wok Hey! Beef Noodles to the Tokyo Bowl to the Salmon Ceviche Taco to the dessert (Chocolate Pistachio tart and Lemon strawberry tart) - gives ur tastebud one heck of a whirl. Flavourful and refreshing - the Tokyo Bowl had a sweet tang to its savoury. The beef noods were deliciously mildly spicy and the texture of the noods created a snap-in-your-mouth elasticity. The bao was extremely fluffy and paired well with the filling. The salmon ceviche was like a vacation... and then the ice cream... oh the ice cream... so goood. Creamy but light and yet packed with flavour that agrees so well with your tongue. Wish they had ice cream on its own as a dessert. Another must try for the sweet tooth: Turkish Delight Lemonade: absolute yummm.
The price for the portions wasn't exactly justifiable but the taste of the food makes up for it. Definitely a must try novelty.

Leave that so called franchised Asian food place and give Momo Baohaus. Best halal Asian food around. This is my review from last week which I forgot to post. Going there again just now
Deysellydia
Made a booking and on arrival my name was not on the list. We were seated in the most uncomfortable place at the restaurant. Two sat on chairs and my hubby and I sat on a cemented bench with no cushions. Was the worse seating at any restaurant I have been to.

No alcohol served here however there is a variety of soft drinks.

Tried a few starters which were good. Edamame beans was not as flavorful compared to other places.

Had Various Bao - which I’m not going to rave about as I was expecting much more flavour with a bit more sauce in this soft bun.

We enjoyed the pistachio ice cream served with the dark chocolate rare.

Momo Baohaus literally transported me back to Hong Kong!

Such a simple and beautiful space, which filled up quickly for Sunday lunch! We were slightly confused by some of the ingredients on the menu, but the lovely waitress explained any unknown ingredients and had super knowledge of the menu and what were the customer favourites, such wonderful and friendly service. The restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol, but don’t fret as they have some yummy in-house speciality drinks, like the Lemongrass gingerbeer which was sooo refreshing.

I had the Bangkok bowl and was totally blown away by the amazing flavours and how they all complimented each other. Definitely highly recommended! The bao buns were also delicious, although I’d recommend that you order a side with them, as it seems they were less filling than the bowls.

Overall an amazing and new experience. Love that the menu is unique and totally non western!
Zee
The food was absolutely amazing we ordered a combo of different bowls and they all were mouth watering with unique flavors . It’s a little gem with amazing food and worth a try
Engela Adriana Schwab
Excellent service! Amazing food! I will definitely call again. We had 7 of your dishes to share and each and every Baos and Tapas were to die for. Cannot wait for our next visit.
Christie Stoltz
Food and service exceeded my expectations (thank you Ingrid for you recommendations and your fantastic personality)
We only ordered off the tapas section of the menu and course after course left us craving more. The fact that we could take our own wine meant that the evening was quite affordable. We left full, satisfied and in good spirits. Today, I am again craving those delicious Asian flavours 🍜🥟🍣🍲
I will be back as soon as possible.

Momo Baohaus takes the ordinary Bao's you see during "yam cha" to a whole new level. Well, that is what you see as a first impression. Apart from Bao's, they also have the Momo and Specialty bowls and other funky dishes. The Korean fried chicken which wasn't too spicy. The Seoul bowl was very balanced and I enjoyed the beef and the Yabi Saki ( one of the specialty bowls) contained a variety of things. The Bao was okay but the down point was that the Bao's were a bit sticky as it was stuck onto the papers. Other than that, the fusion experience was pretty good.

Caraspies7
Mixed emotions after my latest experience. The expansion has changed the vibe significantly. The food was average; sushi was delicious, gyoza was yummy, calamari was over fried and oily, bao needed flavour and the bun broke quite easily.
This is a favourite though so I will give it one more try.
Duncan Mark Sloan
Hit and miss. One or two great dishes but some flops. Some dishes were served cold (like revenge) including the gyoza. Service friendly but inefficient. Zero corkage is cool (but how long will they last without booze profits?). Atmosphere probably good on weekends but midweek was like a draughty church. Security close to none (multiple uncontrolled entrances/ exits). Bowls are prepared on the “kitchen sink” principle: chuck in everything you can find. Flavours unsubtle/ heavy handed. Definitely not five star today (perhaps in the past?).
Ramani
You would love this place if you enjoy Asian food. All their food is fresh and delicious. The staff however need customer service training. The staff are generally having their own conversations at the bar area and have no interest in the customers.
Gracie Kay
I enjoyed a lovely lunch with a group of friends here.

I did not know what to expect but I was excited to try the tapas. They were absolutely amazing. I also had the Turkish Delight lemonade, which is really good.

I will definitely be visiting Momo again. This time to try the sushi or Bao. The food was good and the service was delightful. Thank you :)
Kendall Baker
It was a *meh* experience. We had made a reservation, but the store was so packed that staff ran around looking for tables and chairs for us... outside... in the cold... with no heater. The waitress was friendly but frazzled and forgetful. My boyfriend and I ordered a meal to share and requested an extra bowl when we placed the order. I ordered a glass of water. When the food was delivered non of what we requested arrived besides the food... we needed proper cutlery (knife and fork) to eat the food effectively because the long chopsticks are not designed to get all the smaller noodles and ingredients...
waiting for her to even come back and check on us was useless; so after letting the food get cold (it didn't take long in the Freezing parking lot we were placed in) we powered through the meal. It was okay not great and not bad. Portion sizes are large but quality and taste is still up for debate. I'm definitely willing to try the restuarant again but my Hope's aren't high.
Candygonesailing
Food was absolutely delicious! But service was very slow. Waitresses paid us hardly any attention. Food was brought to the table with no chopsticks/cutlery and only arrived some time after the meal and after we had asked three different waitresses.
Such a pity as great service could have made this a fantastic evening. 😔😔
Kerwyn Fourie
Delicious food, fantastic service and an awesome atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.
P.S. Do yourself a favour and make sure you book. It gets busy

Amazing! I cleaned my bowl( which is rare for me!). Been meaning to try Momo since last year but never got the chance so when Women’s Day rolled over, I dragged my girl to try some Asian cuisine. I loved that there was parking. I had read reviews so I prepared for how small the space is. We called ahead of time cause it does get full. We got a seat outside but because we arrived early the lady gave us a seat indoors till 7pm! We couldn’t complain, the heater was amazing. It made the space nice and cosy. I loved the decor and feel of the space as well. The lights are stunning! The service was also really good, our waiter was really lovely and recommended really amazing options.

When the food came, I loved the colours! The taste was out of this world. It was so good, I finished it all. I will definitely be back because am eager to try their sushi 🙂
Christinejorid
I am such a groupie for Momo Baohus! The vibe is amazing the food is not only tasty, it is also has fair prices. Love that I can bring my own wine without paying corkage. Love it! Wish there were more tables.
Asma Ismail Bhamjee
An absolute hidden gem!

If you like Asian food this place is an absolute must try.

The service was on point and the ambiance lovely, has a real hidden gem feel to it. Love the heater which keeps the place warm in the winter.

Ordered the green beans, fire cracker prawns, crispy calamari and prawn bao.

The food was excellent and I definitely will be back!!!
GlennM
Fresh Asian inspired food at reasonable prices. Menu is varied and interesting and the dishes should satisfy anyone craving good fresh Asian flavors. Chilli, coriander, oyster sauce, garlic, shallots, prawns etc. Free pan crackers was a nice touch too. Service staff could be more attentive but were friendly, professional and courteous when I finally got their attention. Thanks guys. I really enjoyed the meal.
Maureen Donnelly
The venue came highly recommended and I was very impressed with the food. The portions were decent and the flavour was amazing - I really enjoyed the firecracker chicken. For first timers I would suggest ordering a variety of dishes to share. You will not be disappointed.
Leigh Smit
The food is always so delicious at all the Momo branches and staff is always so polite and give great recommendations for if you are not 100% sure what you are going to order! Highly recommended this restaurant for anyone wanting delicious food and a great vibe!
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
All the Momo’s are great. Food always consistent. I have been wanting to eat at this branch for a while and finally ate here. Food is as good as the others. I enjoy their tapas. Not a huge fan of their bowls. Good food.
Elle Mbadaliga
Very cosy hidden gem. I went here for quick dinner. The staff was friendly and paid attention to detail. Best Thai I've had in a long time. I'll come back soon to try out other dishes.
Taariq Benn
Authentic Thai/Asian food. I really enjoyed the food from here. The sushi is unbelievable. They have a really unique and mouthwatering menu.

Seating is not great as there is limited space so try to make a reservation in advance.
Michelle Mutch
I have found my new favourite restaurant! The Szechuan Prawn Wontons were our absolute best! The Tofu Potstickers, the Duck Bao’s and Tofu Bao’s were also incredibly tasty. Biting into a bao is like biting into a fluffy dough cloud here. Service was great with polite and professional staff. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience and can’t wait to go back to try more flavoursome dishes. Thank you Momo Baohaus!
Miss Moony
Absolutely love the food at Momo Baohaus!

Portions are quite large and delicious- two people could share the bowl honestly. We tried out the korean fried chicken (absolutely delicious, be prepared to get your fingers messy), the volcano sushi rolls (has an amazing kick to it if you looking for something spicy and fresh), the kung pow bao (two baos per serving- do not underestimate them- they are really fill you up- the dough is this amazing soft, fluffy piece of heaven and wow that filling was insanely delicious) and the Szenchuan bowl(a bit spicy and an extremely huge dish I must say) . I tried out the popcorn tea- which is amazing especially on a winters day- I left feeling all nice and warmed up by the tea I swear.

The service was good- our waitress was attentive and the food did not take a ridiculously long amount of time.

The prices are also decent, especially when you consider the portion size.

The restaurant is strictly halaal- so no alcohol is served on the premises- however patrons are allowed to bring their own drinks if they wish to do so.

We didn’t try out dessert as we had eaten so much - but that’s an excuse to visit again- definitely will be back for more!
Jen & Row
I love this place. The people are lovely and the food is absolutely delicious. I love that it’s BYOB. The only reason why I didn’t give Momo Baohaus a 5 star is that both times that I’ve been there, we booked a table in advance for more than 5 people and each time we sat outside in the cold. However, as soon as there was space inside, we got to move in. The atmosphere is lovely but a bit squashed.

Overall I’ve had a great experience both times I’ve been there.
Lee-Anne Detert
Have been dying to try the Bao craze and Momo seemed like best place to try from the reviews .... spot on!
Food absolutely delicious with authentic cuisine packed with flavour.
Crispy Calamari was my highlight and the Coachman Bao was awesome.
Highly recommend!

Lynne
Delicious bowls and tapas - yum! Try the potstickers and the Turkish delight lemonade ❤️ Service really slow and inattentive though - long wait for everything 🙁
Shahatit86
Nice place.. Very nice food. Though one thing i would like to advice is that egg is not Vegetarian! Bao was amazing!! And the staff is very good.
Sasha Govender
Maybe the best #Asian food I have had in a long time . We tried a bowl and the boa. Amazing !! Especially for the price! Will be back soon. The bowls are large enough for 2 people. Such a gem .
Edem Alexander Ayivi-Akpagana
The food was amazing, great value for money. I'd recommend the Lucky Bao and the Tokyo Bowl with noodles. Unfortunately didn't have very good service from Blessing who brought us our mains and then dropped off the face of the earth. She wouldn't even attend to the table when it was time to pay and got another waitron to assist us. Would've been 4.5 stars otherwise.
Ria Fraser @CityFlavours
Absolutely everything we ordered here was delicious and they are very reasonably priced! We shared a few plates, the sushi was different to the usual but tasty, the salmon ceviche tacos and the pulled lamb steamed buns were my absolute favourites. They don't have a liquor license, so it's worth knowing that you can bring your own :)
Safee-Naaz Siddiqi
Pretty quiet on a Sunday afternoon but the food is tasty and the service is good. The food is more filling than it looks and R300 for two is a decent estimation.
Gautam Ranjit
We managed to get a reservation after multiple failed walk-in attempts.

However, the wait was absolutely worth it! Fabulous setting in Greenside with an even more cosy feeling establishment once you walk in.

The waitrons were endlessly courteous and always at hand for the next order.

The food was simply sublime. The hot and sour soup was a thing to behold.

We went through almost half the menu, absolutely stuffed and still craving more of the sublime options available.

A definitive gem to come back to over again.

Georgia Yannoulis
Amazing place, food is spectacular! BYOB and enjoy! Service is outstanding INGRID you rock and Millicent is possibly the best hostess. Decor is fab, vibe is lovely! Hubby and I love it 👍🏼
Reece Boosi
Really good food, can get a bit busy on a Thursday-Saturday evening. Very impressed with service, ordered takeaways and a meal was missed. Called back and it was sorted, and delivered without hesitation.
Natalia Bonegio
A fantastic little restaurant with great service and DELICIOUS food! This Asian fusion vibe is very trendy at the moment, and Momo Baohaus pulls it off superbly.

I had a pulled lamb bao, which was to die for. The edamame was wonderfully seasoned. The rainbow rolls were also great. And my drink, Turkish delight lemonade, was so interesting, different, and delish!
Lovegoodfood
Love the food here! We have never been disappointed - all the dishes are full of flavour and delicious.

Favourites are the Korean Fried Chicken wings and the Chairman Bao.

Service can be a bit slow but overall great food experience.
The Schoeman Brothers
What spectacular baos and food! It was so busy, we had to sit in a parking lot! I got a steamed lamb bao with veggies when I originally wanted sushi but it was finished! I am actually glad I got the bao because it was one of the most magnificent things I have ever had at a restaurant. Definitely recommend it!
Debbie Nunes
If you have not been here it is a definite must. Casual dining with great tasting food. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. An evening well spent.
Rudi Swanepoel
Wow I heard this place had great Baos and man do they live up to that name, great flavor and combinations.

I had steam buns in Thailand and I thought by myself nothing can beat that, but man ooooo man was I wrong.

Highly recommend for anybody wanting something different with a great vibe.

They are a bit limited on seating space so make sure you are early.
Shaakira Wadia
hi. what does it mean by 'serves halaal'. this is the first time that i came across this phrase. curious to know😊
i haven't been yet so can't yet rate from a personal expereience but from all that I've heard everything is good
Lisa Lumley
I love the three Momos in Johannesburg. They offer the best Asian fushion cuisine with decent portions and affordable prices.

I visited Momo Baohaus on Tuesday night and it was extremely busy with a very cool vibe.

We ordered the rainbow rolls reloaded, the Colonel Bao and the lucky duck Bao. The food was very delicious, although the sushi was cut very thin.

My petty complaint is that at Momo & O and Momo Soko you are given complimentary Chinese crackers to snack on before your meal, however, we weren’t given this at Momo Bauhaus and the service was a bit slow.

Nevertheless, the amazing food and good prices definitely guarantee loyal customers.
Jehanfakir
Lovely little place. Really great atmosphere on a Saturday night be sure to make a booking as it was really full when we arrived for dinner. Quite love the BYOB concept so you know you’ll always have what you’re drinking. I had the Kung Pow Bao it was delicious and the buns were so soft. Docking a point because our server was quite abrupt and not hospitable but overall would recommend.
Food Man
Good, cost effective and casual. Always extremely busy during peak hours and can become a bit rowdy. Mostly youngsters in attendance. Food is of a high quality

A few weeks ago my benedict and I suddenly had a craving for some good Asian cuisine. After having heard many great things about Momo Baohaus in Greenside, we decided to give it a try. The best way to enjoy such a great menu, is to go for multiple options and share. This is exactly what we did. We ordered the

We went out for a meal with some friends last night and had the most amazing meal here! The waitstaff were friendly, and very accommodating, the food arrived promptly. I must say the food here is of a quality I haven’t seen in Joburg very often. Inventive, tasty and incredibly filling this place is definitely one to visit. The menu has a large variety and they cater for just about everyone. I was very happy to find that they have a wide variety of vegetarian options too. Asian inspired dishes with a bit of a hip twist. Loved every plate we ordered! My only criticism is that the restaurant is a bit small and can get cramped late at night so I would suggest booking a table close to the window. Even so I know this is going to become one of our favorite spots! Be aware that they don’t yet have a liquor license but do allow you to BOB.
Ivone Da Silva
Visited them on a Saturday for lunch. What an awesome experience. The food was great and healthy with an friendly and attentive staff definitely a must try and worthy of many future visits. Keep it up. 🤫
Jake
This was an amazing experience!!! Great food and at a reasonable price, they also really give you good portions , all round it was an incredible restaurant.
Justine Fish
Mmmmm I think I've died and gone to heaven! I had sushi for starters, absolutely divine! Hubby had prawn spring rolls, very good but I think I won on the starters side. Onto mains... I had the Bangkok bowl, the beef was so soft and tender. I couldn't get enough of it, I enjoyed it very much! Hubby had the lamb bao - I was very jealous because it was super yum! Unfortunately we were too full for dessert - maybe next time. The service was great, not too pushy. I will be back to try the bao!
Reneilwe Letlonkane
They iced our beautiful wine that we got from a corner store due to their liquor restrictions. I loved that this Halaal place still makes us alcohol comfortable. So the food was really good guys , my friend mentioned that everything, sans the sushi , that we sampled was overly sweet, but I don’t believe her. Every dish was great !! The fiery wings , the ribs (we can’t go anywhere without having ribs) sushi, the bao , the rice dishes , so we basically had everything except pork . They don’t serve pork . This restaurant is right up there on flavour , can’t wait to go back.
Suzanne Strydom
Not very far from perfect. Delicious, affordable, great atmosphere...did I say delicious? Such good value for money on very authentic dishes...I need an excuse not to go back for every meal. (Only teeny tiny downfall was that due to it being so crowded, the initial service was a bit slow. However, once we had ordered, the food came through very quickly!)
Ilyaas A. Mayet
For its size, this momo is still inviting and homely. I found that the food didn’t live up to the quality of momo soko but in saying that it was still tremendous. Please see my review of momo soko for more info. The difference here is that Baohouse also serve sushi
Mpho Mokhoane
I love this place! I love this place!! I love this place!!! I came to the restaurant last night for dinner with a friend. It was our first being here. What catches your attention immediately is the amazing ambience of the restaurant. It's small and does get cramped during peak time. The atmosphere and friendly, prompt service is on point.

We ordered their sushi which was gorgeously presented and flavourful. I wanted to order more!! We even shared the szheshuan bowl (excuse the spelling)...the hottest thing I've ever eaten!! My word!!

Yeah...we were warned that's its the spiciest dish on the menu but I definitely wanted to try something new! It was worth it and filling! Two people can share a bowl. What makes this establishment even more fantastic is the price value of the food. Definitely affordable but you're given a 5 star food experience. I recommend this restaurant and I'm coming back soon!!

When a place is packed, you know you’re in for a good evening. It was incredibly busy so service was a little slow- We had to call someone just about every time we wanted something- even to clear the table. Staff seemed to put things down and run off instead of asking if we wanted anything else.

The ambience was great- fun industrial type style.

The food was lovely, we were with friends so played it safe. We ordered:

- Rainbiw reloaded (so yum however the wasabi used is sickeningly sweet. Had to use a large dollop to get a tiny hit)
- Deep Sea bao (sadly stuffed with jarred pickled ginger which overpowered everything- too much even for a ginger fiend like me. Bun perfectly cooked),
- Beef and pickled mushroom gyoza (my absolute best. I’d eat 10 portions),
- Veg spring rolls (not the best I’ve had but exceptionally fresh),
- Twice cooked rib (a hit with the table- they ordered a second plate but not really my thing)
- For dessert: We had the deep fried balls (not sure if that’s the correct name) some kind of dry donut made tasty only by the condensed milk and caramel dipping sauce. We were late to order so was the only thing available from the closing kitchen.

I saw so many noodle bowls fly passed our table. It was clearly a popular choice but being our first time we wanted to try a bit of everything (bowls are a substantial meal & because you create your own, sharing isn’t ideal with more than two). Ask your waiter how many portions come in one- some plates are more substantial than others. BYO alcohol but there is a bottlo just around the corner.

Despite my picking- I’d definitely go back again and again

Momo Baohaus is probably my favorite restaurant in Johannesburg. Food is impeccable. All so tasty. Service is great! And the prices are also great! Each time I’ve been we’ve ordered a few dishes for the table and that allows you opportunity to try everything!

Definitely a restaurant you will have to visit more than once. Would recommend the sushi, crispy calamari and any of the baos.

Enjoyed my visit here, the waiters and hostess were great. They knew the menu well and gave really good suggestions on what to try and explained as best as they could what each tapa will taste like.

I had the beef and pickle shiitake dumplings (3,5) not my favourite but they were good. Tasty and not overpowering.

I also had the deep sea bao (tempura prawn, ginger, mayo and other delicious stuff). This was my favourite - loved that the bun itself was tasty, the filling was yummy with just enough sauce. (5)

The beef ribs were really yummy and maybe just a bit too overpowering for me but I still enjoyed their (4).

The crispy calamari was good, couldn’t have finished the tapa on my own. The portions are all very generous. (3.5)

Overall great experience - definitely will be back.

Went back to momo this weekend. The place just keeps getting better since it opened 2 years ago. Quality ingredients, keeping Asian food simple and delicious. Try a bau or a bowl and you won’t be disappointed. The service has really improved since it’s earlier days and food comes out the kitchen really quickly. The “bring your own wine” policy suits the convivial atmosphere of the place.

Tried my first bao bun here and I'm absolutely obsessed! Everything we had was lovely actually. I absolutely love this place and would come back in a flash.

Great menu. Portions are super generous too big for small appetite
Moderate value.
Remember to take a bottle of wine as they are not licensed
Highly recommended

Momo’s is cute and quaint. We went on a Tuesday and it was packed but in a lovely way. The place busses but with a calm to it. The food was really tasty and portion sizes were good. The service was great and led to us having a fantastic evening. While the baos are delicious, the crispy tofu was just mouthwatering. Don’t forget to take your own drinks at no corkage fee 👍🏼

Absolutely love this small simplistic restaurant. The service is friendly and all the staff work as a team which is refreshing. The food is diverse and the flavours of each dish are to die for. It’s BYO and with a woolies and bottle store within walking distance there is no inconvenience for those who are unaware. Firecracker prawns are a big must

Nice spot for lunch. All the starters we tried were really good - the chicken wings and ceviche tacos were my favourite. I didn’t rate the mains as much - I had a bowl and I thought they put in too much sauce so that you couldn’t really taste the ingredients.

I would go back to try the buns.

INTERESTING UNIQUE AND DELICIOUS FOOD.
The atmosphere is buzzy and vibrant. It is definitely a hidden gem in Greenside.
The whole vibe is contemporary and easy going.
